EGU General Assembly 2014, 27 April - 2 May, 2014 in Vienna, Austria, The African continent shows striking topographic features and has recently been target of numerous geophysical and seismic studies to determine its crustal structure, locally and regionally. Observation of surface tectonics coupled with knowledge of variations in crustal thickness provide a top to bottom frame to investigate sub-crustal processes, which affect the uppermost lithosphere and control today’s African topography. As the significance of previous models of crustal thickness in Africa is debatable and favors premature conclusions here our motivation is to address the detailed structure of the African lithosphere revealing Moho and LAB geometry using 1D modeling of elevation, geoid and thermal data including the thermotectonic age of the crust as well as age and thickness of sediments to better account for lateral variations in crustal density. The four-layered model is composed of crust and lithospheric mantle plus sea water and asthenosphere, assuming Airy isostasy and is benchmarked against a detailed compilation of seismic Moho data from active and passive seismic experiments across the continent and its margins. Relating better surface topography with the depth of the Moho and the LAB contributes to improve knowledge on the lithospheric structure in Africa that mainly comes from global models, such as CRUST1.0, regional tomography models and gravity modeling, which unfortunately miss a proper relation between elevation, mean crustal density and crustal thickness. Our approach therefore is seen to support the discussion around the strongly debated processes responsible for the anomalous high elevation especially in the south eastern part of Africa and the observed undulations in Moho depth from about 20 km below the extended regions of the East African Rift System to 50 kilometers underneath the thickest Proterozoic belts. By linking differences in age, density and thermal state of the lithosphere with topography and geoid we want to provide new information especially for the data remote areas in Northern and Central Africa.

The Central Mediterranean, the area encompassing Italy, Sardinia, Tunisia and Libya, is characterised by multiple tectonic processes (plate convergence, subduction, and backarc extension). The evolution and interaction of the plate margins within this relatively small area are still being unravelled particularly at the adjacent region known as the Sicily Channel located between Sicily, Tunisia, Libya and Malta. This Channel is characterised by a seismically and volcanically active rift zone. Much of the observations we have today for the southern parts of the Calabrian arc are either limited to the surface and the upper crust, or are broader and deeper from regional seismic tomography, missing important details about the lithospheric structure and dynamics. The project GEOMED (https://geomed-msca.eu) addresses this issue by processing all the seismic data available in the region in order to understand better the geodynamics of the Central Mediterranean.We measure Rayleigh- and Love-wave phase velocities from ambient seismic noise recordings to infer the structures of the Central Mediterranean, from the Central Apennines to the African foreland, with a special focus on the Sicily Channel Rift Zone (SCRZ). The phase-velocity dispersion curves have periods ranging from 5 to 100 seconds and sample through the entire lithosphere. We invert the dispersion data for isotropic and polarised shear velocities with depth and infer crustal thickness and patterns of radial anisotropy. We find that continental blocks have thick crust (30-50 km), whereas beneath the SCRZ the crust is thin (SH>VSV) indicative of horizontal flow or extension, whereas the uppermost mantle is characterised by slow shear velocities indicative of warmer temperatures and strong negative radial anisotropy (VSH>VSV) indicative of vertical flow. We discuss the relevance of these findings together with other geophysical studies such as the regional seismicity and GPS velocity vectors to identify the rifting process type of the SCRZ.This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 843696.

A common feature of tectonic reconstructions is the migration of subduction zones and their interactions, resulting in complex tectonic patterns. Reduced migration rates, uplift, strong rotations, and slab break-off are all tectonics features commonly associated with convergent margin interactions, showing that while subduction zones' motions fundamentally shape tectonics settings, their interactions hold the key to their complexities. Fundamental properties such as slab buoyancy, dip direction, and coupled mantle flow determine the motions of single hinge zones. When these zones approach, stress transfers between the slabs through the lithosphere and the mantle, thereby altering the subduction force balance, favoring, opposing, or diverting further motions. We illustrate the range of configurations reported in tectonic reconstructions and address their dynamics through the results of analog and numerical models of subduction dynamics in the upper mantle. The Cenozoic evolution of the Mediterranean provides relevant examples of such interactions, where the coeval activity of several subduction zones during the Africa-Europe convergence has strongly overprinted the current tectonics. A comparison of new analog models with the deep dynamics of the Mediterranean shows how the interactions among slabs and mantle may have shaped the distribution of basins and mountain belts, their uplift, and volcanism in this tectonic province.

Seismic evidence and thermal and topographic transients have led to the interpretation of lithospheric removal beneath the Southeast Carpathians region. A series of numerical geodynamic experiments in the context of the tectonic evolution of the region are conducted to test the surface-crustal response to lithosphere delamination and slab break-off. The results show that a delamination-type removal (“plate-like” migrating instability) causes a characteristic pattern of surface uplift/subsidence and crustal extension/shortening to occur due to the lithospheric deformation and dynamic/thermal forcing of the sublithospheric mantle. These features migrate with the progressive removal of the underlying lithosphere. Model results for delamination are comparable with observables related to the geodynamic evolution of the Southeast Carpathians since 10 Ma: the mantle structure inferred by seismic tomography, migrating patterns of uplift (>1.5 km) and subsidence (>2 km) in the region, crustal thinning in the Carpathian hinterland and thickening at the Focsani depression, and regional extension in the Carpathian corner (e.g., opening of Brasov basin) correlating with volcanism (e.g., Harghita and Persani volcanics) in the last 3 Myr.

Recent measurements of surface vertical displacements of the European Alps show a correlation between vertical velocities and topographic features, with widespread uplift at rates of up to ~2–2.5 mm/a in the North-Western and Central Alps, and ~1 mm/a across a continuous region from the Eastern to the South-Western Alps. Such a rock uplift rate pattern is at odds with the horizontal velocity field, characterized by shortening and crustal thickening in the Eastern Alps and very limited deformation in the Central and Western Alps. Proposed mechanisms of rock uplift rate include isostatic response to the last deglaciation, long-term erosion, detachment of the Western Alpine slab, as well as lithospheric and surface deflection due to mantle convection. Here, we assess previous work and present new estimates of the contributions from these mechanisms. Given the large range of model estimates, the isostatic adjustment to deglaciation and erosion are sufficient to explain the full observed rate of uplift in the Eastern Alps, which, if correct, would preclude a contribution from horizontal shortening and crustal thickening. Alternatively, uplift is a partitioned response to a range of mechanisms. In the Central and Western Alps, the lithospheric adjustment to deglaciation and erosion likely accounts for roughly half of the rock uplift rate, which points to a noticeable contribution by mantle-related processes such as detachment of the European slab and/or asthenospheric upwelling. While it is difficult to independently constrain the patterns and magnitude of mantle contributions to ongoing Alpine vertical displacements at present, future data should provide additional insights. Regardless, interacting tectonic and surface mass redistribution processes, rather than an individual forcing, best explain ongoing Alpine elevation changes.

Since several decades, the processes allowing for the subduction of the continental lithosphere less dense than the mantle in a collision context have been widely explored, but models that are based upon the premise that slab pull is the prominent driver of plate tectonics fail. The India–Asia collision, where several episodes of continental subduction have been documented, constitute a case study for alternative views. One of these episodes occurred in the early collision time within the Asian plate where continental lithosphere not attached to any oceanic lithosphere subducted southward in front of the Indian lithosphere during its northward subduction that followed the oceanic subduction of the Tethys ocean. This process, known as collisional subduction, has a counter-intuitive behavior since the subduction is not driven by slab pull. It has been speculated that the mantle circulation can play an important role in triggering collisional subduction but a detailed, qualitative analysis of it is not available, yet. In this work we explore the southward subduction dynamics of the Asian lithosphere below Tibet by means of analogue experiments with the aim to highlight how the mantle circulation induces or responds to collisional subduction. We found that during the northward oceanic subduction (analogue of Tethys subduction) attached to the indenter (Indian analogue), the main component of slab motion is driven vertically by its negative buoyancy, while the trench rolls back. In the mantle the convective pattern consists in a pair of wide convective cells on both sides of the slab. But when the indenter starts to bend and plunge in the mantle, trench motion reverses. Its advance transmits the far field forces to two upper plates (Asian analogues). The more viscous frontal plate thickens, and the less viscous hinterland plate, which is attached to the back wall of the box, subducts. During this transition, a pair of sub-lithospheric convective cells is observed on both sides of the Asian analogue slab, driven by the shortening of the frontal plate. It favors the initiation of the backwall plate subduction. Such subduction is maintained during the entire collision by a wide cell with a mostly horizontal mantle flow below Tibet, passively advecting the Asian analogue slab. Experimental results suggest that once the tectonic far-field force related to the forward horizontal motion becomes dominant upon the buoyancy forces, trench advancing and the transmission of the tectonic force to the upper and backwall plates are promoted. This peculiar condition triggers the subduction of the backwall plate, despite it is light and buoyant.

International audience; We review the geodynamic evolution of the Aegean-Anatolia region and discuss strain localisation there over geological times. From Late Eocene to Present, crustal deformation in the Aegean backarc has localised progressively during slab retreat. Extension started with the formation of the Rhodope Metamorphic Core Complex (Eocene) and migrated to the Cyclades and the northern Menderes Massif (Oligocene and Miocene), accommodated by crustal-scale detachments and a first series of core complexes (MCCs). Extension then localised in Western Turkey, the Corinth Rift and the external Hellenic arc after Messinian times, while the North Anatolian Fault penetrated the Aegean Sea. Through time the direction and style of extension have not changed significantly except in terms of localisation. The contributions of progressive slab retreat and tearing, basal drag, extrusion tectonics and tectonic inheritance are discussed and we favour a model (1) where slab retreat is the main driving engine, (2) successive slab tearing episodes are the main causes of this stepwise strain localisation and (3) the inherited heterogeneity of the crust is a major factor for localising detachments. The continental crust has an inherited strong heterogeneity and crustal-scale contacts such as major thrust planes act as weak zones or as zones of contrast of resistance and viscosity that can localise later deformation. The dynamics of slabs at depth and the asthenospheric flow due to slab retreat also have influence strain localisation in the upper plate. Successive slab ruptures from the Middle Miocene to the Late Miocene have isolated a narrow strip of lithosphere, still attached to the African lithosphere below Crete. The formation of the North Anatolian Fault is partly a consequence of this evolution. The extrusion of Anatolia and the Aegean extension are partly driven from below (asthenospheric flow) and from above (extrusion of a lid of rigid crust).

Density anomalies beneath the lithosphere are expected to generate dynamic topography at the Earth's surface due to the induced mantle flow stresses which scale linearly with density anomalies, while the viscosity of the upper mantle is expected to control uplift rates. However, limited attention has been given to the role of the lithosphere. Here we present results from analogue modeling of the interactions between a density anomaly rising in the mantle and the lithosphere in a Newtonian system. We find that, for instabilities with wavelengths of the same order of magnitude as lithosphere thickness, the uplift rate and the geometry of the surface bulge are inversely correlated to the lithosphere thickness. We also show that a layered lithosphere may modulate the topographic signal. With respect to previous approaches our models represent a novel attempt to unravel the way normal stresses generated by mantle flow are transmitted through a rheologically stratified lithosphere and the resulting topographic signal. © 2017. Subduction-induced mantle circulation plays an important role in the dynamics of convergent margins. Different components of the flow, i.e. toroidal and poloidal, provide relevant driving forces for back-arc basin formation, overriding plate deformation, curvature of subduction zones and volcanic activity. Here, we investigate on the emergence and controls on the toroidal component of the subduction–induced mantle flow by means of numerical modeling. To characterize the toroidal cell's three-dimensional flow, size and length-scales and its disposing factors, we test separately a series of lithospheric and mantle parameters, such as the density difference and viscosity ratio between the slab and the mantle, the width of the slab, as opposed to the size, the stratification and the rheology of the mantle. Out of the tested parameters, the numerical results show that the strength of the flow depends on the mantle viscosity and the magnitude of the slab pull force, that is slab-mantle density difference and the mantle thickness, however the characteristic length, axis and the shape of the toroidal cell are almost independent of the slab's properties and mainly depend on the thickness of the convecting mantle.

International audience; The tectonic and topographic evolution of southeast Asia is attributed to the indentation of India into Eurasia, gravitational collapse of the uplifted terrains and the dynamics of the Sunda and other western Pacific subduction zones, but their relative contributions remain elusive. Here, we analyse 3D numerical geodynamic modeling results involving a collision-subduction system and show that vigorous asthenospheric flow due to differential along-strike slab kinematics may contribute to the surface strain and elevations at collision-subduction transition zones. We argue that protracted northward migration of the collisional front and Indian slab during south to south-westward rollback subduction along the Sunda margin might have produced a similar asthenospheric flow. This flow could have contributed to the southeast Asia extrusion tectonics and uplift of the terrains around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis and protruding from southeast Tibet. Therefore, we suggest that the tectonics and topographic growth east and southeast of Tibet are controlled not only by crustal and lithospheric deformation but also by asthenospheric dynamics.

Etna formation Abstract The Calabrian Arc is a narrow subduction-rollback system resulting from Africa/Eurasia plate convergence. While crustal shortening is taken up in the accretionary wedge, transtensive deformation accounts for margin segmentation along transverse lithospheric faults. One of these structures is the NNW-SSE transtensive fault system connecting the Alfeo seamount and the Etna volcano (Alfeo-Etna Fault, AEF). A second, NW-SE crustal discontinuity, the Ionian Fault (IF), separates two lobes of the CA subduction complex (Western and Eastern Lobes) and impinges on the Sicilian coasts south of the Messina Straits. Analysis of multichannel seismic reflection profiles shows that: 1) the IF and the AEF are transfer crustal tectonic features bounding a complex deformation zone, which produces the downthrown of the Western lobe along a set of transtensive fault strands; 2) during Pleistocene times, transtensive faulting reactivated structural boundaries inherited from the Mesozoic Tethyan domain which acted as thrust faults during the Messinian and Pliocene; 3) the IF and the AEF, and locally the Malta escarpment, accommodate a recent tectonic event coeval and possibly linked to the Mt. Etna formation. Regional geodynamic models show that, whereas AEF and IF are neighboring fault systems, their individual roles are different. Faulting primarily resulting from the ESE retreat of the Ionian slab is expressed in the northwestern part of the IF. The AEF, on the other hand, is part of the overall dextral shear deformation, resulting from differences in Africa-Eurasia motion between the western and eastern sectors of the Tyrrhenian margin of northern Sicily, and accommodating diverging motions in the adjacent compartments, which results in rifting processes within the Western Lobe of the Calabrian Arc accretionary wedge. As such, it is primarily associated with Africa-Eurasia relative motion.

Results from mantle flow models reveal a relationship between seismicity away from the plate boundary in the western United States and the rate change of the vertical normal stress from mantle flow, showing that mantle flow plays an important part in shaping topography, tectonics and seismic hazard within such intraplate settings. Thorsten Becker et al. present results from mantle flow models that reveal a relationship between seismicity away from the plate boundary in the western United States and the rate change of 'dynamic topography' (that is, the vertical normal stress from mantle flow). They conclude that mantle flow plays a significant and quantifiable role in shaping topography, tectonics and seismic hazard within such intraplate settings. Understanding the causes of intraplate earthquakes is challenging, as it requires extending plate tectonic theory to the dynamics of continental deformation. Seismicity in the western United States away from the plate boundary is clustered along a meandering, north–south trending ‘intermountain’ belt1. This zone coincides with a transition from thin, actively deforming to thicker, less tectonically active crust and lithosphere. Although such structural gradients have been invoked to explain seismicity localization2,3, the underlying cause of seismicity remains unclear. Here we show results from improved mantle flow models that reveal a relationship between seismicity and the rate change of ‘dynamic topography’ (that is, vertical normal stress from mantle flow). The associated predictive skill is greater than that of any of the other forcings we examined. We suggest that active mantle flow is a major contributor to seismogenic intraplate deformation, while gravitational potential energy variations have a minor role. Seismicity localization should occur where convective changes in vertical normal stress are modulated by lithospheric strength heterogeneities. Our results on deformation processes appear consistent with findings from other mobile belts4, and imply that mantle flow plays a significant and quantifiable part in shaping topography, tectonics, and seismic hazard within intraplate settings.

Recent modeling shows that surface processes, such as erosion and deposition, may drive the deformation of the Earth's surface, interfering with deeper crustal and mantle signals. To investigate the coupling between the surface and deep process, we designed a three-dimensional laboratory apparatus, to analyze the role of erosion and sedimentation, triggered by deep mantle instability. The setup is constituted and scaled down to natural gravity field using a thin viscous sheet model, with mantle and lithosphere simulated by Newtonian viscous glucose syrup and silicon putty, respectively. The surface process is simulated assuming a simple erosion law producing the downhill flow of a thin viscous material away from high topography. The deep mantle upwelling is triggered by the rise of a buoyant sphere. The results of these models along with the parametric analysis show how surface processes influence uplift velocity and topography signals.

In the Central Mediterranean, during the last 80 Myr Africa has been slowly converging toward Eurasia, with an average relative velocity of less than 1 cm yr−1. For 50 Myr this slow convergence led to the build-up of the Alpine orogenic belt and to the initiation of consumption of the former Tethys ocean; in the last 30 Myr, however, the whole Central-Western Mediterranean has been swept by rapid episodes of trench migration (up to 6 cm yr−1) and back-arc opening, which consumed the whole former Tethys ocean. We combine plate tectonic history, geological timing, and laboratory modelling to reconstruct the subduction history and the evolution of the Central Mediterranean over the last 80 Myr. We find that the dynamic evolution of the subducting oceanic lithosphere can reconcile the rapid, episodic back-arc migration with the slow African convergence, but only if the subduction process is restricted to the upper mantle.

Obduction is an odd geodynamic process characterized by the emplacement of dense oceanic “ophiolites” atop light continental plates in convergent settings. We herein present analog models specifically designed to explore the conditions (i.e., sharp increase of plate velocities — herein coined as ‘acceleration’, slab interaction with the 660 km discontinuity, ridge subduction) under which obduction may develop as a result of subduction initiation. The experimental setup comprises an upper mantle modeled as a low-viscosity transparent Newtonian glucose syrup filling a rigid Plexiglas tank and high-viscosity silicone plates. Convergence is simulated by pushing a piston with plate tectonics like velocities (1–10 cm/yr) onto a model comprising a continental margin, a weakness zone with variable resistance and dip ( W ), an oceanic plate (with or without a spreading ridge), a preexisting subduction zone ( S ) dipping away from the piston and an upper active continental margin, below which the oceanic plate is being subducted at the start of the model (as for the Neotethyan natural example). Several configurations were tested over thirty-five parametric models, with special emphasis on comparing different types of weakness zone and the degree of mechanical coupling across them. Measurements of displacements and internal deformation allow for a precise and reproducible tracking of deformation. Models consistently demonstrate that once conditions to initiate subduction are reached, obduction may develop further depending on the effective strength of W .Results(1)constrainthe range of physical conditions required for obduction to develop/nucleate and (2) underline the key role of such perturbations for triggering obduction, particularly plate ‘acceleration’. They provide an explanation to the short-lived Peri-Arabic obduction, which took place along thousands of km almost synchronously (within ∼ 50–10 Myr), from Turkey to Oman, while the subduction zone beneath Eurasia became temporarily jammed. They also demonstrate that the emplacement of dense, oceanic material on continental lithosphere is not a mysterious process requiring extraordinary boundary conditions but results from large-scale, normal (oceanic then continental) subduction processes.

Subduction megathrust earthquakes occur at the interface between the subducting and overriding plates. These hazardous phenomena are only partially understood because of the absence of direct observations, the restriction of the instrumental seismic record to the past century, and the limited resolution/completeness of historical to geological archives. To overcome these restrictions, modeling has become a key-tool to study megathrust earthquakes. We present a novel model to investigate the seismic cycle at subduction thrusts using complementary analog (paper 1) and numerical (paper 2) approaches. Here we introduce a simple scaled gelatin-on-sandpaper setup including realistic tectonic loading, spontaneous rupture nucleation, and viscoelastic response of the lithosphere. Particle image velocimetry allows to derive model deformation and earthquake source parameters. Analog earthquakes are characterized by "quasi-periodic" recurrence. Consistent with elastic theory, the interseismic stage shows rearward motion, subsidence in the outer wedge and uplift of the "coastal area" as a response of locked plate interface at shallow depth. The coseismic stage exhibits order of magnitude higher velocities and reversal of the interseismic deformation pattern in the seaward direction, subsidence of the coastal area, and uplift in the outer wedge. Like natural earthquakes, analog earthquakes generally nucleate in the deeper portion of the rupture area and preferentially propagate upward in a crack-like fashion. Scaled rupture width-slip proportionality and seismic moment-duration scaling verifies dynamic similarities with earthquakes. Experimental repeatability is statistically verified. Comparing analog results with natural observations, we conclude that this technique is suitable for investigating the parameter space influencing the subduction interplate seismic cycle. © 2012. We designed three-dimensional dynamically self-consistent laboratory models of subduction to analyse the relationships between overriding plate deformation and subduction dynamics in the upper mantle. We investigated the effects of the subduction of a lithosphere of laterally variable buoyancy on the temporal evolution of trench kinematics and shape, horizontal flow at the top of the asthenosphere, dynamic topography and deformation of the overriding plate. Two subducting units, which correspond to a negatively buoyant oceanic plate and positively buoyant continental one, are juxtaposed via a trench-perpendicular interface (analogue to a tear fault) that is either fully-coupled or shear-stress free. Differential rates of trench retreat, in excess of 6 cm yr−1 between the two units, trigger a more vigorous mantle flow above the oceanic slab unit than above the continental slab unit. The resulting asymmetrical sublithospheric flow shears the overriding plate in front of the tear fault, and deformation gradually switches from extension to transtension through time. The consistency between our models results and geological observations suggests that the Late Cenozoic deformation of the Aegean domain, including the formation of the North Aegean Trough and Central Hellenic Shear zone, results from the spatial variations in the buoyancy of the subducting lithosphere. In particular, the lateral changes of the subduction regime caused by the Early Pliocene subduction of the old oceanic Ionian plate redesigned mantle flow and excited an increasingly vigorous dextral shear underneath the overriding plate. The models suggest that it is the inception of the Kefalonia Fault that caused the transition between an extension dominated tectonic regime to transtension, in the North Aegean, Mainland Greece and Peloponnese. The subduction of the tear fault may also have helped the propagation of the North Anatolian Fault into the Aegean domain.

""Convergent margins often exhibit spatial and temporal correlations between trench curvature, overriding plate shortening and topography uplift that provide insights into the dynamics of subduction. The Andean system, where the Nazca plate plunges beneath continental South America, is commonly regarded as the archetype of this class of tectonics systems. There is distinctive evidence that the degree of mechanical coupling between converging plates, i.e. the amount of resistive force mutually transmitted in the direction opposite to their motions, may be at the present-day significantly higher along the central Andean margin compared to the northern and southern limbs. However quantitative estimates of such resistance are still missing and would be desirable. Here we present laboratory models of subduction performed to investigate quantitatively how strong lateral coupling variations need to be to result in trench curvature, tectonic shortening and distribution of topography comparable to estimates from the Andean margin. The analogue of a two-layers Newtonian lithosphere\\\/upper mantle system is established in a silicone putty\\\/glucose syrup tank-model where lateral coupling variations along the interface between subducting and overriding plates are pre-imposed. Despite the simplicity of our setup, we estimate that coupling in the central margin as large as 20% of the driving force is sufficient to significantly inhibit the ability of the experimental overriding plate to slide above the subducting one. As a consequence, the central margin deforms and shortens more than elsewhere while the trench remains stationary, as opposed to the advancing lateral limbs. ""The relief around subduction zones results from the interplay of dynamic processes that may locally exceed the (iso)static contributions. The viscous dissipation of the energy in and around subduction zones is capable of generating kilometer scale vertical ground movements. In order to evaluate dynamic topography in a self-consistent subduction system, we carried out a set of laboratory experiments, wherein the lithosphere and mantle are simulated by means of Newtonian viscous materials, namely silicone putty and glucose syrup. Models are kept in their most simple form and are made of negative buoyancy plates, of variable width and thickness, freely plunging into the syrup. The surface of the model and the top of the slab are scanned in three dimensions. A forebulge systematically emerges from the bending of the viscous plate, adjacent to the trench. With a large wavelength, dynamic pressure offsets the foreside and backside of the slab by similar to 500 m on average. The suction, that accompanies the vertical descent of the slab depresses the surface on both sides. At a distance equal to the half-width of the slab, the topographic depression amounts to similar to 500 m on average and becomes negligible at a distance that equals the width of the slab. In order to explore the impact of slab rollback on the topography, the trailing edge of the plates is alternatively fixed to (fixed mode) and freed from (free mode) the end wall of the tank. Both the pressure and suction components of the topography are similar to 30% lower in the free mode, indicating that slab rollback fosters the dynamic subsidence of upper plates. Our models are compatible with first order observations of the topography around the East Scotia, Tonga, Kermadec and Banda subduction zones, which exhibit anomalous depths of nearly 1 km as compared to adjacent sea floor of comparable age. [1] The fate of a convergent continental margin is investigated. We perform a set of 2D numerical models to study how and why continental collision can evolve in different scenarios. Since the rheology of continental lithosphere has a major control on the dynamics of subduction, we explore a range of different lithosphere and lower crust viscosity values to understand their sensitivity on the possible scenarios. We find that with a rheologically layered crust both delamination and break-off are feasible. We identify three modes: (1) slab detachment, in which the lithospheric mantle and the crust are strongly coupled, subduction slows down and the slab eventually breaks; (2) delamination of the lithospheric mantle that separates from the crust and continue to subduct and (3) an intermediate mode where the lithospheric mantle and the crust remain partially coupled, resulting in an initial stage of delamination followed by the slow down and cessation of subduction.

Mobile belts are long-lived deformation zones composed of an ensemble of crustal fragments, distributed over hundreds of kilometres inside continental convergent margins. The Mediterranean represents a remarkable example of this tectonic setting: the region hosts a diffuse boundary between the Nubia and Eurasia plates comprised of a mosaic of microplates that move and deform independently from the overall plate convergence. Surface expressions of Mediterranean tectonics include deep, subsiding backarc basins, intraplate plateaux and uplifting orogenic belts. Although the kinematics of the area are now fairly well defined, the dynamical origins of many of these active features are controversial and usually attributed to crustal and lithospheric interactions. However, the effects of mantle convection, well established for continental interiors, should be particularly relevant in a mobile belt, and modelling may constrain important parameters such as slab coherence and lithospheric strength. Here we compute global mantle flow on the basis of recent, high-resolution seismic tomography to investigate the role of buoyancy-driven and plate-motion-induced mantle circulation for the Mediterranean. We show that mantle flow provides an explanation for much of the observed dynamic topography and microplate motion in the region. More generally, vigorous small-scale convection in the uppermost mantle may also underpin other complex mobile belts such as the North American Cordillera or the Himalayan-Tibetan collision zone.

We present dynamically self-consistent mantle-scale laboratory models that have been conducted to improve our understanding of the influence of slab window opening on subduction dynamics, mantle flow and associated dynamic topography over geological time scales. The adopted setup consists of a two-layer linearly viscous system simulating the subduction of a fixed plate of silicone (lithosphere) under negative buoyancy in a viscous layer of glucose syrup (mantle). Our experimental setting is also characterized by a constant-width rectangular window located at the center of a laterally confined slab, modeling the case of the interaction of a trench-parallel spreading ridge with a wide subduction zone. We found that the opening of a slab window does not produce consistent changes of the geometry and the kinematics of the slab. On the contrary, slab-induced mantle circulation, quantified both in the vertical and horizontal sections using the Feature Tracking image analysis technique, is strongly modified. In particular, rollback subduction and the opening of the slab window generate a complex mantle circulation pattern characterized by the presence of poloidal and toroidal components, with the importance of each evolving according to kinematic stages. Mantle coming from the oceanic domain floods through the slab window, indenting the supra-slab mantle zone and producing its deformation without any mixing between mantle portions. The opening of the slab window and the upwelling of sub-slab mantle produce a regional-scale non-isostatic topographic uplift of the overriding plate that would correspond to values ranging between ca. 1 and 5 km in nature. Assuming that our modeling results can be representative of the natural behavior of subduction zones, we compared them to the tectonics and volcanism of the Patagonian subduction zone. We found that the anomalous backarc volcanism that has been developing since the middle Miocene could result from the lateral flow of sub-slab mantle and that part of the Patagonian uplift could be dynamically supported.

International audience; The origin of forces driving the deformation of the continental crust near subduction zones and especially in backarc regions is debated. This work is based on a compilation of SKS fast splitting directions that give an image of flow lines in the mantle around the Mediterranean subduction zones and a comparison with stretching and shear directions in metamorphic core complexes that show the pattern of deformation at the scale of the middle and lower crusts. We find that : (1) the two sets of directions are parallel in the three main backarc regions, namely the Alboran Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aegean Sea showing that the lithosphere deforms with the same direction of stretching in the crust and the mantle, suggesting that (2) crustal deformation is mainly driven from below by slab retreat, and (3) the lithospheric fabric is reset within a few millions of years in backarc environments.

Oceanic lithosphere thickens and strengthens as it grows older. Worldwide databases reveal that the age of the slab to a certain extent controls the subduction style. Old and thick (and consequently strong) slabs show a trench “advance,” while younger, thin (weak) slabs are migrating in retreating style (trench “rollback”). We performed numerical models to show that this confi guration could be the result of the dynamic equilibrium between gravity and resisting forces. In particular we show that energy dissipation caused by bending and unbending of the slab, although less important than other resisting forces, could be a primary control on trench migration. Our results fi t well with global compilations of kinematic data from modern subduction zones in two reference frames with different amounts of net rotations. Based on the age at which the transition from retreating to advancing style occurs, we propose an effective lithosphere/mantle viscosity of ~200 during bending of the lithosphere into the subduction zone.

International audience; Recent global kinematic studies reveal that most of the trenches roll back but a significant number of them advance toward the upper plate. Those advancing trenches are mostly located in the Western Pacific and correspond to the subduction of very old, Mesozoic oceanic lithosphere. While retreating trenches are commonly explained by the slab pull action of the descending lithosphere, the origin of advancing trenches is still debated. Since this relationship is dependent upon the adopted reference frame, we select region where geological studies show the variability of trench migration style with time. The Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) region represents a key example. The detailed reconstruction of the trench migration of the IBM subducting system reveals that after a long episode of asymmetric rollback, the IBM trench recently started advancing. We propose that this change from retreating to advancing trench mode results from the subduction of progressively older and stiffer lithospheric material. We test this hypothesis by means of two-dimensional (2-D) numerical models, reproducing the effects of the lithospheric aging during subduction. The result of our numerical tests shows that the entrance of old and stiff lithosphere forces the trench to advance because the increasing stiffness of the slab prevents the slab to unbend once it has subducted. We adapt this physical result to the IBM evolution, showing that the switch from trench retreat to trench advance can reconcile the shape of IBM slab as previously suggested. Finally we discuss the possibility that the subduction of the Cretaceous lithosphere might have triggered the change of the motion of the Pacific plate around 5 Ma.

International audience; The deep-sea trenches that circumscribe the Pacific basin are moving westward relative to the deep mantle by a few cm/yr, together with the Pacific seafloor. While the westward drift of the Pacific basin dominates the observed net westward rotation of Earth's tectonic plates relative to the deep mantle source of the Pacific hotspots, its cause remains uncertain. We demonstrate that the source of this westward drift is tectonic in origin: the westward push of the high Andean topography along the eastern Pacific margin is large enough to shear the entire Pacific upper mantle with a surface velocity of ~30 mm/yr. In addition, because the Pacific upper mantle is confined between vertically coherent slabs of subducted lithosphere on both sides of the Pacific, slabs in the western Pacific are forced to advance toward upper plates because the eastern Pacific slabs are pushed westward. This cross-Pacific interaction provides an explanation for trench advance, which is observed in the western Pacific and is not easily explained by the local dynamics of subduction in which dense sinking slabs essentially tend to retreat from overriding plates. Thus, the basic asymmetry of the Pacific system, which has been noted for almost all tectonic features including slab dips, trench motions, and upper plate tectonics, is the result of one-sided Andean forcing on the volume of Pacific upper mantle. The net rotation of the lithosphere is then the result of surface tectonics: westward motion is an accident resulting from the current distribution of tectonic plates, and was triggered by the mid-Cenozoic closure of the Tethys Ocean, via a westward expansion of the Atlantic and Andean cordilleran building.

International audience; Rocks metamorphosed under high-pressure (HP) and ultra high-pressure (UHP) conditions in subduction zones come back to the surface relatively soon after their burial and at rates comparable to plate boundary velocities. In the Mediterranean realm, their occurrence in several belts related to a single subduction event shows that the burial­exhumation cycle is a recurrent transient process. Using the Calabria­Apennine and Aegean belts as examples, we show that the exhumation of HP rocks is associated in time and space with the subduction of small continental lithosphere blocks that triggers slab rollback, creating the necessary space for the exhumation of the buoyant continental crust that was deeply buried just before. The buoyancy force of the subducted crust increases until this crust detaches from the downgoing slab. It then exhumes at a rate that depends directly on the velocity of trench retreat to become part of the overriding plate. Heated from below by the asthenosphere that flows into the opening mantle wedge, the exhumed crust weakens and undergoes core-complex-type extension, responsible for a second stage of exhumation at a lower rate. The full sequence of events that characterizes this model (crust­mantle delamination, slab rollback and trench retreat, HP rock exhumation, asthenosphere heating and core-complex formation) arises entirely from the initial condition imposed by the subduction of a small continental block. No specific condition is required regarding the rheology and erosion rate of HP rocks. The burial­exhumation cycle is transient and can recur every time a small continental block is subducted.

The motion of oceanic plates is commonly related to the subduction of cold and dense oceanic material into the mantle. These models predict plate velocities from subduction velocities but the trench motion is not directly included in the computation. Here, using a recent compilation of a global data set, we found that the motion of trenches (either advancing or retreating with respect to upper plates) scales with their corresponding subducting plates motion. Based on simple experimental tests, we found that subduction of strong slabs inside the upper mantle correctly predicts these kinematic relationships. We deduce that the motion of the trenches represent the surface manifestation of the resistance encountered by the subducting lithosphere to bend and penetrate within the upper mantle.

International audience; We investigate, using 3D laboratory experiments, how the dynamics of indentation process are affected by the evolution at depth of the oceanic and continental subductions. Lithospheric plates are modelled by sand silicone plates floating on glucose syrup, and the density contrast between oceanic and continental lithospheric plates and asthenosphere is reproduced. Analogue experiments model the convergence between two lithospheric plates, a small continent indenting a large continental plate. We show that the surface deformation in front of the indenter and above the oceanic subduction zone depends on the behaviour of the slab below the collision zone. Slab break-off following the subduction of the small continent favours the indentation process, because it results in an increasing compression in front of the indenter, and extension above the neighbouring oceanic subduction, both of them being responsible for the appearance of the indenter-like geometry of the plate boundary. When the slab does not deform significantly at depth, in contrast, the closure of the oceanic domain in front of the indenter is followed by a longer period of continental subduction, during which the tectonic regime within the wide continent remains quite homogeneous. Comparing the presented analogue experiments with the subductions both part of the Arabian indenter within Eurasia, our results suggest that the different tectonic regime on both sides of the Arabia indenter may partly result from the probable occurrence of a detachment at depth under eastern Anatolia.

SUMMARY Geological and geophysical constraints to reconstruct the evolution of the Central Mediterranean subduction zone are presented. Geological observations such as upper plate stratigraphy, HP–LT metamorphic assemblages, foredeep/trench stratigraphy, arc volcanism and the back-arc extension process are used to define the infant stage of the subduction zone and its latest, back-arc phase. Based on this data set, the time dependence of the amount of subducted material in comparison with the tomographic images of the upper mantle along two cross-sections from the northern Apennines and from Calabria to the Gulf of Lyon can be derived. Further, the reconstruction is used to unravel the main evolutionary trends of the subduction process. Results of this analysis indicate that (1) subduction in the Central Mediterranean is as old as 80 Myr, (2) the slab descended slowly into the mantle during the first 20–30 Myr (subduction speeds were probably less than 1 cm year x1 ), (3) subduction accelerated afterwards, producing arc volcanism and back-arc extension and (4) the slab reached the 660 km transition zone after 60–70 Myr. This time-dependent scenario, where a slow initiation is followed by a roughly exponential increase in the subduction speed, can be modelled by equating the viscous dissipation per unit length due to the bending of oceanic lithosphere to the rate of change of potential energy by slab pull. Finally, the third stage is controlled by the interaction between the slab and the 660 km transition zone. In the southern region, this results in an important re-shaping of the slab and intermittent pulses of back-arc extension. In the northern region, the decrease in the trench retreat can be explained by the entrance of light continental material at the trench.
