K‐rich adakite‐like rocks (KARs) in post‐collisional settings, such as in Tibet, have been widely linked with the melting of pre‐existing thickened crust. Here, we investigate geochemical data of the Late Eocene (38–34 Ma) volcanic rocks including KARs from the southern Qiangtang terrane (SQT) of central Tibet. The data reveal that: (a) the volcanic rocks define a fractionation trend from high‐K alkaline basalt to high‐K calc‐alkaline rhyolite, with a continuous compositional range and (b) they are characterized by a narrow range of depleted Sr–Nd isotopic compositions relative to the pre‐Eocene SQT crust. We contend that the KARs in the SQT resulted from fractional crystallization of hydrous, alkaline melts derived from the lithospheric mantle where fractionation was dominated by amphibole and plagioclase. Partial melting of the lithospheric mantle beneath the SQT was possibly triggered by thermal perturbations owing to the north‐directed subduction of the Indian continental lithosphere beneath southern Tibet. Plain Language Summary: Adakites were originally defined as silica‐rich magmas produced by melting of basalts in subducting oceanic crust. They are Na‐rich with low K2O and K2O/Na2O, and are characterized by high Sr/Y and La/Yb and low Y and Yb. In post‐collisional settings, such as in Tibet, silica‐rich magmatic rocks with high Sr/Y and La/Yb have been identified, but they are not sodic as true adakites, and are rich in K2O, forming K‐rich adakite‐like rocks (KARs). They have been linked with the melting of pre‐existing crustal rocks at high pressures where garnet is present. We investigate geochemical data of the Late Eocene (38–34 Ma) volcanic rocks that include KARs from the southern Qiangtang terrane (SQT) of central Tibet. We conclude that these KARs were not products of crustal melting at high pressures, but resulted from extreme fractional crystallization of lithospheric mantle‐derived, hydrous, primitive alkaline melts. Given that extreme fractional crystallization commonly occurs in a compressive regime, we argue that the lithospheric mantle underneath the SQT underwent melting during a compressive regime possibly due to thermal perturbations, driven by north‐directed subduction of the Indian continental lithosphere beneath southern Tibet. The current lithospheric root of the South China Block has been partly removed, yet what mechanisms modified the lithospheric structure remain highly controversial. Here we use a new joint seismic inversion algorithm to image tabular high-velocity anomalies at depths of ~90–150 km in the asthenosphere beneath the convergent belt between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks that remain weakly connected with the stable Yangtze lithosphere. Based on obtained seismic images and available geochemical data, we interpret these detached fast anomalies as partially destabilized lower lithosphere that initially delaminated at 180–170 Ma and has relaminated to their original position after warming up in the mantle by now. We conclude that delamination is the most plausible mechanism for the lithospheric modification and the formation of a Mesozoic Basin and Range-style magmatic province in South China by triggering adiabatic upwelling of the asthenosphere and consequent lithospheric extension and extensive melting of the overlying crust. Abstract: Different hypotheses have been proposed for the origin and pre-Cenozoic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau as a result of several collision events between a series of Gondwana-derived terranes (e.g., Qiangtang, Lhasa and India) and Asian continent since the early Paleozoic. This paper reviews and reevaluates these hypotheses in light of new data from Tibet including (1) the distribution of major tectonic boundaries and suture zones, (2) basement rocks and their sedimentary covers, (3) magmatic suites, and (4) detrital zircon constraints from Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks. The Western Qiangtang, Amdo, and Tethyan Himalaya terranes have the Indian Gondwana origin, whereas the Lhasa Terrane shows an Australian Gondwana affinity. The Cambrian magmatic record in the Lhasa Terrane resulted from the subduction of the proto-Tethyan Ocean lithosphere beneath the Australian Gondwana. The newly identified late Devonian granitoids in the southern margin of the Lhasa Terrane may represent an extensional magmatic event associated with its rifting, which ultimately resulted in the opening of the Songdo Tethyan Ocean. The Lhasa−northern Australia collision at ~263Ma was likely responsible for the initiation of a southward-dipping subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Oceanic lithosphere. The Yarlung-Zangbo Tethyan Ocean opened as a back-arc basin in the late Triassic, leading to the separation of the Lhasa Terrane from northern Australia. The subsequent northward subduction of the Yarlung-Zangbo Tethyan Ocean lithosphere beneath the Lhasa Terrane may have been triggered by the Qiangtang–Lhasa collision in the earliest Cretaceous. The mafic dike swarms (ca. 284Ma) in the Western Qiangtang originated from the Panjal plume activity that resulted in continental rifting and its separation from the northern Indian continent. The subsequent collision of the Western Qiangtang with the Eastern Qiangtang in the middle Triassic was followed by slab breakoff that led to the exhumation of the Qiangtang metamorphic rocks. This collision may have caused the northward subduction initiation of the Bangong-Nujiang Ocean lithosphere beneath the Western Qiangtang. Collision-related coeval igneous rocks occurring on both sides of the suture zone and the within-plate basalt affinity of associated mafic lithologies suggest slab breakoff-induced magmatism in a continent−continent collision zone. Porphyry copper deposits (PCDs) represent the most important type of Cu reservoir on Earth, but the mechanism of Cu enrichment in PCDs is debated due to the lack of direct constraints. This issue may be resolved by the study of copper isotopes (δ65Cu), which are strongly fractionated during formation and/or precipitation of sulfides. Here we report high-precision Cu-isotope data on a large set of porphyries, mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs), and sulfide ores from PCDs in southern Tibet. For comparison, barren intrusions from southern Tibet were also analyzed. The fertile porphyries and MMEs from PCDs have high Cu contents and elevated δ65Cu values compared with the barren intrusions and global average felsic rocks. These features are inconsistent with the known supergene processes after sulfide formation (e.g., leaching and weathering). Because sulfides formed from secondary Cu-rich fluids are enriched in heavy Cu isotopes, the elevated Cu contents and Cu-isotope ratios indicate that the Cu source for PCDs was a refertilized lithosphere enriched in sulfides. This suggests that initial Cu enrichment in magma sources could be a key step in the formation of giant PCDs in continental collision zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Widespread Miocene (24-8 Ma) ultrapotassic rocks and their entrained xenoliths provide information on the composition, structure, and thermal state of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle in southern Tibet during the India-Asia continental collision. The ultrapotassic rocks along the Lhasa block delineate two distinct lithospheric domains with different histories of depletion and enrichment. The eastern ultrapotassic rocks (89°E-92°E) reveal a depleted, young, and fertile lithospheric mantle (87Sr/86Srt = 0.704-0.707 [t is eruption time]; Hf depleted-mantle model age [TDM] = 377-653 Ma). The western ultrapotassic rocks (79°E-89°E) and their peridotite xenoliths (81°E) reflect a refractory harzburgitic mantle refertilized by ancient metasomatism (lavas: 87Sr/86Srt = 0.714-0.734; peridotites: 87Sr/86Srt = 0.709-0.716). These data integrated with seismic tomography suggest that upwelling asthenosphere was diverted away from the deep continental root beneath the western Lhasa block, but rose to shallower depths beneath a thinner lithosphere in the eastern part. Heating of the lithospheric mantle by the rising asthenosphere ultimately generated the ultrapotassic rocks with regionally distinct geochemical signatures reflecting the different nature of the lithospheric mantle.
