Recognizing the deviation in an animal's behavior from a population mean is not only necessary to understand the evolution and stability of the whole system but also to predict the future of a population in a changing environment. Arctic seabirds are expected to exhibit high synchronization in timing of breeding at the population level, due to highly seasonal and harsh environmental conditions. Nevertheless, even in such a highly synchronized system, there are always some earlier and later breeders, and the drivers of inter-pair variation remain largely unknown. Using an 8-year dataset on Alle alle (Dovekie), a small Arctic seabird, we examined potential drivers of breeding phenology. We found that A. alle pairs were quite repeatable in their phenology, and preserved their phenological status, with their chicks hatching consistently before, during, or after the population median date for hatching, despite that the calendar position of the median shifted between years. This would suggest that timing of breeding is associated with some pair characteristics, either via properties of the nest and/or some partner's traits. However, breeding phenology of the pair was not dependent on nest location, pair bond duration or morphological similarity of the partners. Importantly, timing of breeding was negatively associated with chick growth rate, indicating fitness consequences of phenology. A simulation in our study further suggests that the chance of fledgling survival in the context of predation may be the highest for the chicks that hatched during the peak of the hatching period. While our results suggest that the timing of the breeding is important for the reproductive outcome, further research is required to determine the drivers of the consistent breeding phenology within A. alle pairs. Changes in corticosterone (CORT) and prolactin (PRL) levels are thought to provide complementary information on parental decisions in birds in the context of stressful situations. However, these endocrine mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated, appearing to vary among avian species without any clear pattern. Here, we examined CORT and PRL stress responses in a small Arctic seabird, the little auk ( Alle alle ). We analysed the levels of these hormones (baseline, and stress response, i.e. the change in the baseline in response to stress) with respect to the breeding phase (mid incubation and mid chick rearing) and the sex of the birds. Baseline CORT concentrations were similar during both breeding phases but baseline PRL levels were higher during incubation than chick rearing. The CORT and PRL stress responses were stronger during incubation than chick rearing (although with respect to CORT the effect was only marginally significant). There were also some sex-specific baseline levels and stress responses for both hormones (during the incubation period males compared to females exhibited higher CORT stress response and lower baseline PRL; during the chick rearing period males exhibited higher PRL stress response). Our results suggest that in the case of the little auk, both the incubation and the chick rearing periods may represent similar levels of physiological stress. However, the birds may be more sensitive to stress during incubation than during chick rearing, possibly because of inter-phase differences in predation pressure. Identifying natural populations that might be considered separate units using morphology, genotype or both is important in understanding the process of speciation and for conservation. We examined the relationships between the only two subspecies of the most numerous Arctic seabird, the Little Auk Alle alle, using both morphological (wing and head-bill lengths) and genetic data (482 base pairs of the mitochondrial control region and seven nuclear microsatellite loci). We found significant morphological differences between the subspecies, A. a. polaris being significantly larger than the nominate A. a. alle. However, we did not find the subspecies to be differentiated at either mitochondrial DNA or at microsatellite loci. Consequently, one evolutionary significant unit is proposed. The similarity of the two subspecies at neutral genetic markers may be due to contemporary gene flow between populations, as well as large population sizes both in the present and in the past, combined with recent post-glacial colonization of the Artic. Abstract: We examined behavioural and hormonal stress responses in a small seabird (little auk, Alle alle), which exhibits a transition from biparental to male-only care towards the end of the nesting period, in order to understand the mechanisms underlying this parental strategy. We hypothesized that the male staying with the chick should be less sensitive to stressors. As such the male might offer the offspring more efficient protection during the fledging period than the female. We tested this hypothesis by observing male and female behaviour in a neophobia test. We also measured the birds' baseline and stress-induced levels of corticosterone and prolactin using the standardized capture-and-restraint protocol. Both sexes respond rapidly to foreign objects, delaying the entry time to the nest with food, consuming the food load, and/or temporarily abandoning feeding. However, we did not find any differences between the sexes in the frequency of each behaviour or in the time of the first reaction to the experimental treatment. Level of both corticosterone and prolactin increased after the experimental treatment. However, we did not find sex differences in baseline and stress-induced hormone levels. The results indicate that the males are as much sensitive to the stress situation as the females. Thus, the pattern of male and female behavioural and hormonal responses to stress does not predict their behaviour at the final breeding stage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A dual foraging strategy (long versus short trips) has been described for some species of seabirds, such as petrels, albatrosses (Procellariiformes) and penguins (Sphenisciphormes). Such a strategy has recently been reported for little auks ( Alle alle) from the central coast of west Spitsbergen, Svalbard. This has been explained as a response to poor trophic conditions close to the breeding colony, and better conditions further away (150 km). In the present study, we investigated the foraging strategy of little auks in Hornsund, southern Spitsbergen, during two seasons with contrasting oceanographic conditions. During 2004, foraging conditions for little auks were good: cold Arctic waters rich in profitable high-energy food were dominant in their feeding grounds. Conversely, during 2006 there was a great influx of warm Atlantic water in the feeding area, inducing poor foraging conditions. In both seasons we examined the pattern of foraging trip lengths automatically with a video camera (both adults from four nests in each year), and by direct non-stop observation of 20–54 individually marked birds. Our results showed that the dual strategy and the ratio of short and long trips were consistent, regardless of the conditions in the feeding grounds. Sperm competition theory predicts that colonially breeding birds, such as many seabirds, should be exposed to high risks of sperm competition because there are many potential mating partners and severe socioecological constraints on mate-guarding behaviour. However, parentage studies have usually revealed a low frequency of extrapair paternity in colonial seabirds. Detailed studies of copulation behaviour could provide valuable insights into the causality of genetic monogamy in these species. We investigated the timing, frequency and success of extrapair and within-pair copulation attempts in the little auk, a socially monogamous and highly colonial seabird that raises only a single chick per year. We found that the majority of monitored individuals (above 60% in both sexes) engaged in extrapair copulation activities. Extrapair copulation attempts made up usually more than 10% of all copulation attempts of a particular individual but were generally unsuccessful because of female rejection behaviour. Only 2% (8/330) of all copulations with cloacal contact were extrapair copulations. Molecular parentage analysis of 64 chicks revealed only two cases of extrapair paternity, which is comparable to the proportion of successful copulations that were extrapair. We conclude that genetic monogamy seems to be maintained at a proximate level through female resistance to male extrapair copulation attempts and frequent within-pair copulations. Nevertheless, not all extrapair copulations were rejected by females, which suggests that engaging in one or a few extrapair copulations could be adaptive to females, for example as an insurance against mate infertility.
