We study the effect of molecular conformation on the electronic coupling between the donor amines and acceptor 1,8-naphthalimide (NPI) in a series of D-A systems 1-4 (A = NPI; D = phenothiazine, phenoxazine, carbazole, diphenylamine, respectively, for 1, 2, 3, and 4). Weakly coupled systems show dual emission in the solution state, while strongly coupled systems show single emission bands. The energy of transitions and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield are sensitive to the molecular conformation and donor strength. These compounds show delayed emission in the solutions and aggregated state and phosphorescence in the solid state. Compounds 3 and 4 with weak donors exhibit intermolecular slipped π···π interactions in the solid state and consequently exhibit dual (intra- and inter-) phosphorescence at low temperature. Steady state and time-resolved PL studies at variable temperature together with computational and crystal structure analysis were used to rationalize the optical properties of these compounds. The delayed emission of these compounds is sensitive to molecular oxygen; accordingly, these molecules are utilized for differential imaging of normoxia and hypoxia cancer cells.

Design and development of stable blue emitters are challenging owing to their potential applications in displays and lighting technologies. Triarylborane (TAB) with suitable donors has been extensively exploited in several fields. We report herein the synthesis and structural characterization of a simple 2-(dimesitylboryl)-1H-pyrrole (2) and its precursor N-Boc-(dimesitylboryl)-pyrrole (1). In the crystal lattice of 2, supramolecular dimer was formed by strong N�H�I� (2.59 A ) hydrogen bonding interactions between the monomers and this dimer is further connected by weak van der Waals interactions (C�H�I�) with neighbouring dimers to form a supramolecular network. There is no solvatochromism noted in the absorption spectra, however significant positive solvatochromism was observed in the fluorescence spectra; points to the polar nature of excited state of 1 and 2. Compound 2 showed intense and efficient blue color luminescence in the solid state than that of 1. Thus, N�H�I� interactions and I�-excessive nature of pyrrole are responsible for the above features. Impressively, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit the phosphorescence emission with a long-lived lifetime of �0.55 s at 77 K and delayed fluorescence at room temperature. Solid-state luminescence of organic dyes is an elusive frontier, and understanding and designing solid-state stimuli-responsive materials is not trivial. "Mechanoluminescence" (ML) or "triboluminescence" (TL), which is associated with fracture or force-initiated luminescence from a material, is currently attracting new interest. Fracturing the surfaces of organic crystals ordered in noncentrosymmetric space groups can electronically excite the surface and neighboring molecules through piezo- or pyroelectric effects, and this can result in luminescence when the molecules relax back to their ground states. The combined duration of these two consecutive phenomena leads to force-generated luminescence or TL. Although TL has been known for a very long time, examples of TL-active materials are scarce, but are increasing as synthetic and characterization procedures develop. The question is now whether the relatively rare phenomenon of TL needs to be reevaluated to obtain a broader understanding of the subject.

The advances in boron incorporated organics have captured overwhelming interest on account of their outstanding properties and promising applications in various fields. Mostly, triarylborane compounds (TAB) are exploited as sensors of F– and CN– anions at the expense of the intrinsic Lewis acidic nature of boron. New molecular probes 1 and 2 for detection of toxic thiophenol were designed by conjugating highly fluorescent borylanilines with the luminescent quencher 2,4-dinitrobenzene based sulfonamides (DNBS), wherein the electrophilicity of the DNBS moiety has been modulated by fine-tuning the intrinsic Lewis acidity of boron. Understanding the structure–property and structure–morphology correlations of organic luminescent materials is essential in order to employ such materials for desired applications. In this regard, we prepared a library of novel triarylboron-tethered N-boryl-1,8-naphthalimides (TAB-NPIs) 1–6 with variations in their steric and electronic factors. Compounds 1–6 are weakly luminescent in molecularly dispersed state; however, they are strongly luminescent in the aggregated state (THF–H2O mixture). The presence of sterically hindered triarylboryl units in 1–6 endowed these molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics by preventing cofacial arrangements of NPI moieties, as shown by the supramolecular interactions in the crystal lattice. These structural features preclude excimer formation which can be detrimental to the radiative process in these molecules. Typically, molecules with a twisted donor-acceptor (D-A) architecture have been exploited for constructing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Herein, we report the first example of a thiophene-based thermally activated delayed fluorescent molecule without a D-A architecture. Compound 1 (2,5-bis(2,2-di(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)thiophene) is conformationally flexible and shows weak fluorescence in the solution state but displays bright TADFin both condensed and solid states. Compound 1 crystallized in two different polymorphs (1 a and 1 b). Interestingly, both polymorphs show distinctly different TADF features. The broad spectral features and the TADF characteristics of 1 have been explored for the time-dependent multicolor (green, yellow and red) imaging of living cells.

Design, synthesis and structural characterization of borylated aryl amines, Mes2BAr {Ar = C6(CH3)4NR2 (1, 4); C6H4NR2 (2, 5); C6H3(NR2)2 (3, 6); R = H or CH3}, were reported. The intriguing optical signatures undoubtedly revealed their donor–acceptor characteristics and a bright tunable solid state emission is readily realized. The solid state luminescence characteristics of 1 and 3 were sensitive to mechanical stress with distinguishable emission color changes. Multiple strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds (N–H⋯N and N–H⋯π) accompanied by subtle conformational changes play a significant role in the piezochromic response. PXRD and FT-IR spectroscopic studies and insensitivity of substituted derivatives to mechanical stress support the above inference. Interestingly, compound 3 crystallized in two different polymorphic forms 3BP and 3GP, which showed distinct luminescence, i.e., green and blue color under UV light. Such changes are due to their distinct hydrogen-bond network assembly in the solid state. Quantum mechanical calculations were performed in order to corroborate the optical properties.

A photoredox-catalyst- and template-free sunlight-induced molecular dimerization of a vinylpyridine-functionalized tetraarylaminoborane (TAAB) has been accomplished for the first time. The reaction is quantitative, highly regioselective, and thermally irreversible. The presence of the propeller-shaped TAAB framework allows selective photodimerization of one of the two vinyl pyridine units. Monomer 1 and photodimer 2 exhibit distinct photophysical properties with delayed fluorescence (DF) both in solution and the solid state, which was confirmed by steady-state and time-resolved luminescence studies. Quantum mechanical calculations were performed to support the experimental observations. Our new approach using [2+2] cycloaddition chemistry paves the way for the development of highly sought-after deep-blue DF materials.

Design and synthesis of a novel tetraphenylethene-2-pyrone (TPEP) conjugate exhibiting donor-acceptor characteristics is reported. The localized frontier molecular orbitals (DFT studies) and the solvent polarity dependent photoluminescence characteristics directly corroborate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer character in TPEP. TPEP is poorly emissive in the solution state. In contrast, upon aggregation (THF/water mixtures), TPEP exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement. Upon aggregation, dyad TPEP forms a fluorescent nanoaggregate which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy imaging studies. The luminescence nanoaggregates were elegantly exploited for selective detection of nitro aromatic compounds (NACs). It was found that nanoaggregates of TPEP were selectively sensing the picric acid over the other NACs. Efficiency of the quenching process was further evaluated by the Stern-Volmer equation. TPEP-based low-cost fluorescent test strips were developed for the selective detection of picric acid.

Replacing homodiatomic CC in polyaryl systems with an isoelectronic heterodiatomic B–N unit is a powerful strategy for the rational design and construction of novel materials with versatile properties. Herein, we uncover for the first time the intriguing aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of four tetra-arylaminoboranes (TAAB) 1–4 in which the CC fragment of the tetra-arylethene molecule is replaced by the isoelectronic B–N unit. The dipole of these compounds was fine-tuned by judiciously employing amine donor(s) on the aryl groups attached to nitrogen. The optical properties are intriguing and are greatly influenced by the number of amine donor(s) on the B–N fragment. Compounds 1–4 are weakly emissive in dilute solutions, but are strongly emissive in the aggregated/condensed state. Compounds with strong amine donor(s) on the B–N fragment exhibit reversible mechanofluorochromism. The luminescent nano-aggregates of 1–4 were explored for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds. The experimental observations are supported by detailed computational studies.

Recent advancements of material science and its applications have been immensely influenced by the modern development of organic luminescent materials. Among all organic luminogens, boron containing compounds have already established their stature as one of the indispensable classes of luminescent dyes. Boron, in its various forms e.g. triarylboranes, borate dyes and boron clusters, has attracted considerable attention owing to its several unique and excellent photophysical features. In very recent times, beyond the realms of solution-state studies, luminescent boron-containing compounds have emerged as a large and versatile class of stimuli responsive materials. Based on several fundamental concepts of chemistry, researchers have come up with an admirable variety of boron-containing materials with AIE (aggregation-induced emission), mechano-responsive luminescence, thermoresponsive-luminescence as well as a number of purely organic phosphorescent materials and other standalone examples. The unique chemical as well as physical properties of boron-containing compounds are largely responsible for the development of such materials. In this review these new findings are brought together.

Systematic structural perturbation has been used to fine-tune and understand the luminescence properties of three new 1,8-naphthalimides (NPIs) in solution and aggregates. The NPIs show blue emission in the solution state and their fluorescence quantum yields are dependent upon their molecular rigidity. In concentrated solutions of the NPIs, intermolecular interactions were found to quench the fluorescence due to the formation of excimers. In contrast, upon aggregation (in THF/H2O mixtures), the NPIs show aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE). The NPIs also show moderately high solid-state emission quantum yields (ca. 10-12.7 %). The AIEE behaviour of the NPIs depends on their molecular rigidity and the nature of their intermolecular interactions. The NPIs 1-3 show different extents of intermolecular (pi-pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot O) interactions in their solid-state crystal structures depending on their substituents. Detailed photophysical, computational and structural investigations suggest that an optimal balance of structural flexibility and intermolecular communication is necessary for achieving AIEE characteristics in these NPIs.

An investigation of a series of seven angular "V" shaped NPIs (1-7) is presented. The effect of substitution of these structurally similar NPIs on their photophysical properties in the solution-state and the solid-state is presented and discussed in light of experimental and computational findings. Compounds 1-7 show negligible to intensely strong emission yields in their solid-state depending on the nature of substituents appended to the oxoaryl moiety. The solution and solid-state properties of the compounds can be directly correlated with their structural rigidity, nature of substituents and intermolecular interactions. The versatile solid-state structures of the NPI siblings are deeply affected by the pendant substituents. All of the NPIs (1-7) show antiparallel dimeric π-π stacking interactions in their solid-state which can further extend in a parallel, alternate, orthogonal or lateral fashion depending on the steric and electronic nature of the C-4' substituents. Structural investigations including Hirshfeld surface analysis methods reveal that where strongly interacting systems show weak to moderate emission in their condensed states, weakly interacting systems show strong emission yields under the same conditions. The nature of packing and extended structures also affects the emission colors of the NPIs in their solid-states. Furthermore, DFT computational studies were utilized to understand the molecular and cumulative electronic behaviors of the NPIs. The comprehensive studies provide insight into the condensed-state luminescence of aggregation-prone small molecules like NPIs and help to correlate the structure-property relationships.

A new series of luminescent cyclometalated platinum complexes with triarylborane-functionalized acetylacetonate ligands is reported. The complexes exhibit solid state luminescence and phosphorescence under ambient conditions. The luminescence color can be tuned from green to red by varying the cyclometalating ligand [2-phenylpyridine (for 1 and 2), 2-thiophenylpyridine (for 3 and 4), 2-thianapthenylpyridine (for 5 and 6)]. The luminescence originates from mixed 3MLCT/3IL [MLCT, metal to ligand charge transfer; IL, intraligand] states of square planar platinum and borane moieties. The π spacer (phenyl or duryl) which connects the boryl and platinum entities has a significant role in determining the photoluminescence efficiency. The bulky duryl spacer in 2, 4, and 6 significantly reduces π–π stacking of the square planar platinum moiety in the solid state and provides a rigid backbone, thereby increasing their quantum yield significantly. Two new dicyanovinyl (DCV) functionalized triarylboranes (Mes2B-π-spacer-DCV, for 1: π-spacer = C6H4, for 2: π-spacer = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-phenyl) are reported. The molecular structures of 1 and 2 are similar except for the spacer which connects the boryl and DCV units. This small structural perturbation induces drastic changes in the optical properties of 1 and 2. Compound 2 shows weak dual fluorescence emission in nonpolar solvents and a stronger emission in polar solvents. Compound 1 is weakly fluorescent in polar environments but shows an intense single luminescence peak in less polar environments. Compound 1 exhibits a turn-off fluorescence response for both fluoride and cyanide: in contrast, 2 shows a turn on fluorescence response for both anions with different fluorescence signatures. The NMR titration studies reveal that for compound 2, fluoride binds to the boron centre and cyanide binds to the DCV unit. For compound 1, the fluoride ion binds to the boron center, whereas the CN(-) binds to both the Ar3B and DCV units.
