Background: Results from phase II studies in patients with stage IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer with ipsilateral mediastinal nodal metastases (N2) have shown the feasibility of resection after concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy with promising rates of survival. We therefore did this phase III trial to compare concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed by resection with standard concurrent chemotherapy and definitive radiotherapy without resection., Methods: Patients with stage T1-3pN2M0 non-small-cell lung cancer were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to concurrent induction chemotherapy (two cycles of cisplatin [50 mg/m(2) on days 1, 8, 29, and 36] and etoposide [50 mg/m(2) on days 1-5 and 29-33]) plus radiotherapy (45 Gy) in multiple academic and community hospitals. If no progression, patients in group 1 underwent resection and those in group 2 continued radiotherapy uninterrupted up to 61 Gy. Two additional cycles of cisplatin and etoposide were given in both groups. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Analysis was by intention to treat. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00002550., Findings: 202 patients (median age 59 years, range 31-77) were assigned to group 1 and 194 (61 years, 32-78) to group 2. Median OS was 23.6 months (IQR 9.0-not reached) in group 1 versus 22.2 months (9.4-52.7) in group 2 (hazard ratio [HR] 0.87 [0.70-1.10]; p=0.24). Number of patients alive at 5 years was 37 (point estimate 27%) in group 1 and 24 (point estimate 20%) in group 2 (odds ratio 0.63 [0.36-1.10]; p=0.10). With N0 status at thoracotomy, the median OS was 34.4 months (IQR 15.7-not reached; 19 [point estimate 41%] patients alive at 5 years). Progression-free survival (PFS) was better in group 1 than in group 2, median 12.8 months (5.3-42.2) vs 10.5 months (4.8-20.6), HR 0.77 [0.62-0.96]; p=0.017); the number of patients without disease progression at 5 years was 32 (point estimate 22%) versus 13 (point estimate 11%), respectively. Neutropenia and oesophagitis were the main grade 3 or 4 toxicities associated with chemotherapy plus radiotherapy in group 1 (77 [38%] and 20 [10%], respectively) and group 2 (80 [41%] and 44 [23%], respectively). In group 1, 16 (8%) deaths were treatment related versus four (2%) in group 2. In an exploratory analysis, OS was improved for patients who underwent lobectomy, but not pneumonectomy, versus chemotherapy plus radiotherapy., Interpretation: Chemotherapy plus radiotherapy with or without resection (preferably lobectomy) are options for patients with stage IIIA(N2) non-small-cell lung cancer., Funding: National Cancer Institute, Canadian Cancer Society, and National Cancer Institute of Canada.

Purpose: Adjuvant chemotherapy for early stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is now the standard of care, but there is little information regarding its impact on quality of life (QOL). We report the QOL results of JBR.10, a North American, intergroup, randomized trial of adjuvant cisplatin and vinorelbine compared with observation in patients who have completely resected, stages IB to II NSCLC., Patients and Methods: QOL was assessed with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 and a trial-specific checklist at baseline and at weeks 5 and 9 for those who received chemotherapy and at follow-up months 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36. A 10-point change in QOL scores from baseline was considered clinically significant., Results: Four hundred eighty-two patients were randomly assigned on JBR.10. A total of 173 patients (82% of the expected) in the observation arm and 186 (85% of expected) in the chemotherapy arm completed baseline QOL assessments. The two groups were comparable, with low global QOL scores and significant symptom burden, especially pain and fatigue, after thoracotomy. Changes in QOL during chemotherapy were relatively modest; fatigue, nausea, and vomiting worsened, but there was a reduction in pain and no change in global QOL. Patients in the observation arm showed considerable improvements in QOL by 3 months. QOL, except for symptoms of sensory neuropathy and hearing loss, in those treated with chemotherapy returned to baseline by 9 months., Conclusion: The findings of this trial indicate that the negative effects of adjuvant chemotherapy on QOL appear to be temporary, and that improvements (with a return to baseline function) are likely in most patients.

Purpose: p53 and RAS are multifunctional proteins that are critical to cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, cell survival, gene transcription, response to stress, and DNA repair. We have evaluated the prognostic and predictive value of p53 gene/protein aberrations using tumor samples from JBR.10, a North American phase III intergroup trial that randomly assigned 482 patients with completely resected stage IB and II non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to receive four cycles of adjuvant cisplatin plus vinorelbine or observation alone., Methods: p53 protein expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Mutations in exons 5 to 9 of the p53 gene were determined by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography and confirmed by sequencing. RAS mutations were identified by allelic specific oligonucleotide hybridization., Results: Of 253 patients, 132 (52%) were positive for p53 protein overexpression. Untreated p53-positive patients had significantly shorter overall survival than did patients with p53-negative tumors (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.89; 95% CI, 1.07 to 3.34; P = .03). However, these p53-positive patients also had a significantly greater survival benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy (HR = 0.54; P = .02) compared with patients with p53-negative tumors (HR = 1.40; P = .26; interaction P = .02). Mutations of p53 and RAS genes were found in 124 (31%) of 397 and 117 (26%) of 450 patients, respectively. Mutations in these genes were neither prognostic for survival nor predictive of a differential benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy., Conclusion: p53 protein overexpression is a significant prognostic marker of shortened survival, and also a significant predictive marker for a differentially greater benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy in completely resected NSCLC patients.

Purpose: Recent trials have shown significant survival benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Whether elderly patients tolerate platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy and derive the same survival advantage is unknown. This retrospective study evaluated the influence of age on survival, adjuvant chemotherapy delivery, and toxicity in National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group study JBR.10., Patients and Methods: Pretreatment characteristics and survival were compared for 327 young (< or = 65 years) and 155 elderly (> 65 years) patients. Chemotherapy delivery and toxicity were compared for 213 treated patients (63 elderly, 150 young)., Results: Baseline demographics by age were similar with the exception of histology (adenocarcinoma: 58% young, 43% elderly; squamous: 32% young, 49% elderly; P = .001) and performance status (PS; PS 0: 53% young, 41% elderly; P = .01). Chemotherapy significantly prolonged overall survival for elderly patients (hazard ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.38 to 0.98; P = .04). This benefit is similar to the effect for all patients in JBR.10. Mean dose-intensities of vinorelbine and cisplatin were 13.2 and 18.0 mg/m2/wk in young, respectively, and 9.9 and 14.1 mg/m2/wk in elderly patients (vinorelbine, P = .0004; cisplatin, P = .001), respectively. The elderly received significantly fewer doses of vinorelbine (P = .014) and cisplatin (P = .006). Fewer elderly patients completed treatment and more refused treatment (P = .03). There were no significant differences in toxicities, hospitalization, or treatment-related death by age group. Fifteen (11.9%) of 126 deaths in the young resulted from nonmalignant causes, and 15 (21.1%) of 71 in the elderly (P = .13)., Conclusion: Despite elderly patients' receiving less chemotherapy, adjuvant vinorelbine and cisplatin improves survival in patients older than 65 years with acceptable toxicity. Adjuvant chemotherapy should not be withheld from elderly patients.

Purpose: Traditional treatment for superior sulcus non-small-cell lung cancers (SS NSCLC), radiation plus surgery, yields a 50% rate of complete resection and a 30% 5-year survival. On the basis of improved outcomes in other subsets of stage III NSCLC, this trial tested the feasibility of induction chemoradiotherapy for SS NSCLC., Patients and Methods: Patients with T3-4, N0-1 SS NSCLC received two cycles of cisplatin and etoposide concurrently with radiation (45 Gy). Patients with stable or responding disease underwent thoracotomy. All patients received two more cycles of chemotherapy. Survival was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and prognostic factors were assessed by Cox regression analysis., Results: From April 1995 to November 1999, 110 eligible patients (76 men, 34 women) were entered onto the study (78 T3, 32 T4 tumors). Induction therapy was completed by 104 (95%) patients. Of 95 patients eligible for surgery, 88 (80%) underwent thoracotomy, two (1.8%) died postoperatively, and 83 (76%) had complete resection. Pathologic complete response (CR) or minimal microscopic disease was seen in 61 (56%) resection specimens. Five-year survival was 44% for all patients and 54% after complete resection, with no difference between T3 and T4 tumors. Pathologic CR led to better survival than when any residual disease was present (P = .02). Disease progression occurred mainly in distant sites., Conclusion: This combined-modality approach is feasible and is associated with high rates of complete resection and pathologic CR in both T3 and T4 tumors. Local control and overall survival seem markedly improved relative to previous studies of radiation plus resection.

Background: We undertook to determine whether adjuvant vinorelbine plus cisplatin prolongs overall survival among patients with completely resected early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer., Methods: We randomly assigned patients with completely resected stage IB or stage II non-small-cell lung cancer to vinorelbine plus cisplatin or to observation. The primary end point was overall survival; principal secondary end points were recurrence-free survival and the toxicity and safety of the regimen., Results: A total of 482 patients underwent randomization to vinorelbine plus cisplatin (242 patients) or observation (240); 45 percent of the patients had pathological stage IB disease and 55 percent had stage II, and all had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score of 0 or 1. In both groups, the median age was 61 years, 65 percent were men, and 53 percent had adenocarcinomas. Chemotherapy caused neutropenia in 88 percent of patients (including grade 3 febrile neutropenia in 7 percent) and death from toxic effects in two patients (0.8 percent). Nonhematologic toxic effects of chemotherapy were fatigue (81 percent of patients), nausea (80 percent), anorexia (55 percent), vomiting (48 percent), neuropathy (48 percent), and constipation (47 percent), but severe (grade 3 or greater) toxic effects were uncommon (<10 percent). Overall survival was significantly prolonged in the chemotherapy group as compared with the observation group (94 vs. 73 months; hazard ratio for death, 0.69; P=0.04), as was relapse-free survival (not reached vs. 46.7 months; hazard ratio for recurrence, 0.60; P<0.001). Five-year survival rates were 69 percent and 54 percent, respectively (P=0.03)., Conclusions: Adjuvant vinorelbine plus cisplatin has an acceptable level of toxicity and prolongs disease-free and overall survival among patients with completely resected early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer., (Copyright 2005 Massachusetts Medical Society.)

To determine the influence of adjuvant therapy on the risk of DID following resection of NSCLC, we compared the actuarial rate of non-cancer related deaths of patients who had been entered in Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group E3590 (a phase III trial of adjuvant therapy in patients with completely resected stages II and IIIA NSCLC) to the actuarial death rate of age and gender matched controls. Following surgery, patients were randomized to receive either PORT (5040 cGy in 28 daily fractions) or CPORT (PORT plus four cycles of cisplatin (60 mg/m2, day 1) and etoposide (120 mg/m2, days 1-3) administered concurrently). The study accrued 488 patients, 242 to the PORT only arm and 246 to the CPORT arm. The overall 4 years actuarial rate of DID for the two arms combined, with a median follow-up of 82 months, was 12.9%, not significantly different from the 10.1% expected rate of DID, based on mortality rates for age and gender matched controls derived from US vital statistics and corrected for smoking status (p=0.16). Survival distributions with regard to DID did not differ between the two treatment arms (p=0.96). DID increased with age (treated as a continuous variable, p<0.01), but was not affected by histology, side of chest irradiated, type of surgery, FEV1 or weight loss in the previous 6 months. The risk of DID following resection of stages II and IIIA NSCLC is not increased in patients who received PORT or CPORT.

PURPOSE A retrospective review of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) database was undertaken to review the incidence and timing of diagnosis of brain metastases in patients undergoing combined-modality therapy for stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Four hundred twenty-two eligible, assessable patients with stage IIIA/B NSCLC were treated on four SWOG protocols. Treatment varied with protocol but consisted of concurrent cisplatin-etoposide and radiation in all patients, with a surgery arm in two of the four protocols. Results Of the 422 total patients, 268 (64%) have experienced disease progression; 54 relapses (20%) were in brain only, 17 (6.5%) were in brain and other sites simultaneously, and 197 (63.5%) were in sites other than brain. Of the 268 patients with disease progression, progression in the brain only, in the brain and other sites, and not in the brain occurred in 20%, 6%, and 74% of patients, respectively. Time from treatment to diagnosis of disease progression in the brain in 71 patients was as follows: during treatment, 16 relapses (22.5%); 0 to 16 weeks after treatment, 17 relapses (24%); 16 weeks to 6 months after treatment, 10 relapses (14%); 6 to 12 months after treatment, 16 relapses (22.5%); and more than 12 months after treatment, 12 relapses (17%). Nonsquamous histology and young patient age were the only significant predictors for increased risk of early relapse with brain metastases. CONCLUSION Brain metastases often develop early in the course of treatment for stage IIIA/B NSCLC. The statistical designs of ongoing trials of prophylactic cranial irradiation in stage III NSCLC have taken this into account.

Resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has 5-years survival rates of 30-70%. The role of adjuvant chemotherapy remains unclear with poor compliance reported in most trials. The compliance with adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) for stage IB and II NSCLC was analyzed using data from a North American multi-centre phase III study (accrual 1994-2001) that compared adjuvant chemotherapy to observation. Planned chemotherapy consisted of cisplatin (CIS) 50 mg/m2 days 1, 8 and vinorelbine (VIN) 25 mg/m2 days 1, 8, 15, 22 for four cycles; the VIN dose had been reduced from 30 mg/m2 after an initial cohort of patients experienced unacceptable toxicity. Four hundred and twenty-four patients were randomized after the amendment, 215 to the chemotherapy arm. Median age was 60 years, 64% were male and 84% had stage II disease. Thirty-seven patients completed one cycle, 14 completed two, 20 completed three and 108 patients completed all four cycles. Ten patients received no therapy. Multivariate analysis demonstrated statistically significant differences in compliance with extent of surgery, gender and age. Patients randomized in Canada were more likely to fail to complete chemotherapy due to refusal of therapy than their American counterparts. Patients who had pneumonectomies were more likely to discontinue therapy due to toxicity than those who had lesser resections. Extent of surgery may play a role in both the compliance and toxicity of ACT. Differences between nations in the perception of the risks and benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, both between physicians and patients, should be investigated further.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that patients with non-small cell lung cancer and single-level N2 metastases constitute a favorable subgroup of patients with mediastinal metastases, we analyzed the results of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group 3590 (a randomized prospective trial of adjuvant therapy in patients with resected stages II and IIIa non-small cell lung cancer) by site of primary tumor and pattern of lymph node metastases., Methods: Accurate staging was ensured by mandating either systematic sampling or complete dissection of the ipsilateral mediastinal lymph nodes. The overall survival of patients with left lung non-small cell lung cancer and metastases in only 1 of lymph node levels 5, 6, or 7 and right lung non-small cell lung cancer with metastases in only 1 of levels 4 or 7 was compared with that of patients with N1 disease originating in the same lobe., Results: The median survival of the 172 patients with single-level N2 disease was 35 months (95% confidence interval: 27-40 months) versus 65 months (95% confidence interval: 45-84 months) for the 150 patients with N1 disease (median follow-up 84 months, P =.01). However, among patients with left upper lobe tumors, survival was not significantly different between patients with N1 disease and patients with single-level N2 disease (49 vs 51 months, P =.63). The median survival of the 71 patients with single-level N2 metastases without concomitant N1 disease (skip metastases) was 59 months (95% confidence interval: 36-107 months) versus 26 months (95% confidence interval: 16-36 months) for the 145 patients with both N1 and N2 metastases (P =.001)., Conclusions: Survival of patients with left upper lobe non-small cell lung cancer and metastases to single-level N2 lymph nodes is not significantly different from that of patients with N1 disease. The presence of isolate N2 skip metastases is associated with improved survival when compared with patients with both N1 and N2 disease. Survival should be reported by the lobe of primary tumor and metastatic pattern to guide future clinical trial development, treatment strategies, and revisions of the TNM staging system.

Purpose: Limited small-cell lung cancer (LSCLC) is characterized by a high initial response rate to chemoradiotherapy, but local or systemic relapse occurs in the majority of patients. Previous Southwest Oncology Group trials in LSCLC have utilized cisplatin and etoposide (PE) delivered concurrently with thoracic radiotherapy followed by two consolidation cycles. Newer chemotherapy regimens such as paclitaxel and carboplatin are active in small-cell lung cancer and hold the promise of improving both local and systemic control. S9713 evaluated the substitution of paclitaxel and carboplatin for PE consolidation in LSCLC., Patients and Methods: Between July 1998 and August 1999, 96 patients were accrued from 43 institutions. Eighty-nine patients were eligible; 87 were assessable for survival and response. Treatment consisted of cisplatin 50 mg/m(2) on days 1, 8, 29, and 36, and etoposide 50 mg/m(2) on days 1 to 5 and days 29 to 33, with concurrent radiotherapy of 61 Gy beginning on day 1. Consolidation therapy was carboplatin (area under the curve = 6) and paclitaxel 200 mg/m(2), both drugs administered on day 1 of a 21 day cycle for three cycles., Results: The response rate was 86% (complete response, 33%; partial response, 53%). Median overall survival was 17 months (95% CI, 12.7 to 19.0). One- and 2-year overall survivals were 61% and 33%, respectively. Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 9 months, 1-year PFS was 40%, and 2-year PFS was 21%., Conclusion: Consolidation therapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin in LSCLC resulted in an outcome similar to that seen in prior Southwest Oncology Group trials. This study and others which have tested paclitaxel in small-cell lung cancer dampens enthusiasm for this agent in the primary management of LSCLC.

The occurrence of second primary tumors (SPTs) following adjuvant therapy for resected stages II and IIIa non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was investigated. Data regarding SPTs were prospectively collected in all patients accrued to Eastern Cooperative Group Oncology E3590 (a phase III trial of adjuvant therapy in patients with completely resected stages II and IIIa NSCLC). Four hundred eighty-eight patients were accrued to the study, 242 to the RT arm and 246 to the CRT arm. Median follow-up was 73 months. Thirty patients (6.1%) developed 33 SPTs, 20 in the RT arm and ten in the CRT arm. Ten SPTs occurred within the upper aerodigestive tract, six in the RT arm and four in the CRT arm. Twenty-three SPTs occurred in other organs, 17 in the RT arm and six in the CRT arm. Median time to detection of a SPT for those patients randomized to RT and CRT was 43 and 36 months, respectively. The incidence of SPTs was 1.8% per patient-year of follow-up. Excluding skin tumors, the relative risk of death following diagnosis of a SPT for patients randomized to the CRT arm as compared with those randomized to RT alone was 2.26 (95% confidence interval, 0.78-5.58, P=0.12). Patients are at risk for developing a SPT following resection of stages II and IIIa NSCLC. The majority of SPTs occur outside the aerodigestive tract. Following development of a non-skin SPT, the survival difference between patients who had received adjuvant CRT and those treated with adjuvant RT alone was not significant.

Purpose: To test the concept of taxane sequencing in combined-modality therapy, this phase II trial (S9504) evaluated consolidation docetaxel after concurrent chemoradiotherapy in patients with pathologically documented stage IIIB non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Results were compared with those of the predecessor study (S9019) with identical eligibility, staging criteria, and treatment, excepting docetaxel consolidation., Patients and Methods: Treatment consisted of cisplatin 50 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 29, and 36, etoposide 50 mg/m2 on days 1 through 5 and 29 through 33, and concurrent thoracic radiotherapy (total dose of 61 Gy). Consolidation docetaxel started 4 to 6 weeks after chemoradiotherapy at an initial dose of 75 mg/m2., Results: Stage subsets (tumor-node-metastasis system) in 83 eligible patients were as follows: T4N0/1, 31 patients (37%); T4N2, 22 patients (27%), and T1-3N3, 30 patients (36%). Concurrent chemoradiotherapy was generally well tolerated, but two patients died from probable radiation-associated pneumonitis. Neutropenia during consolidation docetaxel was common (57% with grade 4) and most frequent during escalation to 100 mg/m2. Median progression-free survival was 16 months, median survival was 26 months, and 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 76%, 54%, and 37%, respectively. Brain metastasis was the most common site of failure. In S9019, median survival was 15 months and 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 58%, 34%, and 17%, respectively., Conclusion: Consolidation docetaxel after concurrent chemoradiotherapy in stage IIIB NSCLC is feasible and generally tolerable, and results compare favorably with the predecessor trial S9019. Nevertheless, this study remains hypothesis-generating and does not provide definitive evidence of the benefit of this approach. Phase III trials evaluating the S9504 regimen have been initiated to validate these results.

Background: To determine the changes in clinical trials and outcomes of patients with limited-stage small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) treated on Phase III randomized trials initiated in North America between 1972 and 1992., Methods: Phase III trials from 1972 to 1992 for patients with limited-stage SCLC were identified. Patients with limited-stage SCLC treated during a similar time interval were also evaluated in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Trends were tested in the number of trials, in the number and gender of patients entered on trial, and in survival duration over time., Results: Thirty trials involving 6564 patients were eligible for analyses. Nineteen trials (61%) involving 3626 patients were initiated within the first half of this time period (1972-1981). The median of median survival times of all patients treated on the control arms of the Phase III trials initiated between 1972 and 1981 and between 1982 and 1992 were 12.0 months (range, 10-16 months) and 17.0 months (range, 11-20 months), respectively (P < 0.001). Of 26 studies available for survival analysis, 5 (19%) showed a statistically significant survival prolongation in the experimental arm compared with the control arm with a median prolongation of 3.4 months (range, 1-5.2 months). All five evaluated some aspect of thoracic radiation therapy. Over a similar time period, there was a 6.4-month increase in the median survival of limited-stage SCLC patients listed in the SEER database (P < 0.0001) and a more than doubling of the 5-year survival from 5.2% to 12.1% (P = 0.0001)., Conclusions: Analyses of the patients with limited-stage SCLC treated on Phase III trials in North America initiated between 1972 and 1992 and those listed in the SEER database show significant improvements in median survivals. Furthermore, the 5-year survival of patients with limited-stage SCLC listed in the SEER database has more than doubled over the last 25 years. Further research will be needed to determine the relative contribution of improved therapy, supportive care, and stage migration to this prolongation in survival., (Copyright 2002 American Cancer Society.DOI 10.1002/cncr.10841)

Purpose: There are no published survival data after chemoradiotherapy (chemoRT) in pathologically documented stage IIIB non-small-cell lung cancer. Studies of radiotherapy (RT) alone or chemotherapy followed by RT yield 5-year survivals less than 10%. The Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) employed the same concurrent chemoRT induction regimen used in its predecessor trimodality trial to determine the efficacy, safety, and long-term outcome of replacing postinduction surgery with additional chemoRT., Patients and Methods: Eligible patients for SWOG-9019 had pathologic documentation of T4N0/1, T4N2, or N3 stage IIIB non-small-cell lung cancer. They had pulmonary function adequate to withstand combined-modality therapy, identical to the requirements of the previous trial with postchemoRT surgery. Induction therapy was two cycles of cisplatin plus etoposide (PE) concurrent with once-daily thoracic RT (45 Gy). In the absence of progressive disease, RT was completed to 61 Gy, with two additional cycles of cisplatin plus etoposide., Results: Fifty eligible patients were accrued with tumor-node (TN) substage confirmed on central review: 18, T4N0/1; 12, T4N2; and 20, N3. Grade 4 neutropenia was the most common toxicity (32%). Grade 3/4 esophagitis occurred in 12% and 8%. Median follow-up was 52 months, and overall median survival was 15 months (10 to 22, 95% confidence interval). Three- and 5-year survivals were 17% and 15% (5-year T4N0/1, 17%; T4N2, 13%; and N3, 15%)., Conclusion: Feasibility and long-term survival support the application of these results as a standard against which mature outcomes of chemoRT trials with new chemotherapy agents can be compared. These results also justify use of the SWOG-9019 approach as a control arm in ongoing phase III trials.
