Corneal infection is a major public health concern worldwide and the most common cause of unilateral corneal blindness. Toxic effects of different microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, worsen keratitis leading to corneal perforation even with optimal drug treatment. The cornea forms the main refractive surface of the eye. Diseases affecting the cornea can cause severe visual impairment. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the risk of corneal perforation and visual impairment in corneal ulcer patients for making early treatment strategies. The modeling of a fully automated prognostic model system was performed in two parts. In the first part, the dataset contained 4973 slit lamp images of corneal ulcer patients in three centers. A deep learning model was developed and tested for segmenting and classifying five lesions (corneal ulcer, corneal scar, hypopyon, corneal descementocele, and corneal neovascularization) in the eyes of corneal ulcer patients. Further, hierarchical quantification was carried out based on policy rules. In the second part, the dataset included clinical data (name, gender, age, best corrected visual acuity, and type of corneal ulcer) of 240 patients with corneal ulcers and respective 1010 slit lamp images under two light sources (natural light and cobalt blue light). The slit lamp images were then quantified hierarchically according to the policy rules developed in the first part of the modeling. Combining the above clinical data, the features were used to build the final prognostic model system for corneal ulcer perforation outcome and visual impairment using machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost, LightGBM. The ROC curve area (AUC value) evaluated the model's performance. For segmentation of the five lesions, the accuracy rates of hypopyon, descemetocele, corneal ulcer under blue light, and corneal neovascularization were 96.86, 91.64, 90.51, and 93.97, respectively. For the corneal scar lesion classification, the accuracy rate of the final model was 69.76. The XGBoost model performed the best in predicting the 1-month prognosis of patients, with an AUC of 0.81 (95% CI 0.63-1.00) for ulcer perforation and an AUC of 0.77 (95% CI 0.63-0.91) for visual impairment. In predicting the 3-month prognosis of patients, the XGBoost model received the best AUC of 0.97 (95% CI 0.92-1.00) for ulcer perforation, while the LightGBM model achieved the best performance with an AUC of 0.98 (95% CI 0.94-1.00) for visual impairment., (© 2024. The outbreak of pneumonia caused by novel coronavirus (COVID-19) at the end of 2019 was a major public health emergency in human history. In a short period of time, Chinese medical workers have experienced the gradual understanding, evidence accumulation and clinical practice of the unknown virus. So far, National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China has issued seven trial versions of the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of COVID-19". However, it is difficult for clinicians and laymen to quickly and accurately distinguish the similarities and differences among the different versions and locate the key points of the new version. This paper reports a computer-aided intelligent analysis method based on machine learning, which can automatically analyze the similarities and differences of different treatment plans, present the focus of the new version to doctors, reduce the difficulty in interpreting the "diagnosis and treatment plan" for the professional, and help the general public better understand the professional knowledge of medicine. Experimental results show that this method can achieve the topic prediction and matching of the new version of the program text through unsupervised learning of the previous versions of the program topic with an accuracy of 100%. It enables the computer interpretation of "diagnosis and treatment plan" automatically and intelligently.

With the wide adoption of building automation system, and the advancement of data, sensing, and machine learning techniques, data-driven fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) for building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems has gained increasing attention. In this paper, data-driven FDD is defined as those that are built or trained from data via machine learning or multivariate statistical analysis methods. Following this definition, this paper reviews and summarizes the literature on data-driven FDD from three aspects: process, systems studied (including the systems being investigated, the faults being identified, and the associated data sources), and evaluation metrics. A data-driven FDD process is further divided into the following steps: data collection, data cleansing, data preprocessing, baseline establishment, fault detection, fault diagnostics, and potential fault prognostics. Literature reported data-driven methods used in each step of an FDD process are firstly discussed. Applications of data-driven FDD in various HVAC systems/components and commonly used data source for FDD development are reviewed secondly, followed by a summary of typical metrics for evaluating FDD methods. Finally, this literature review concludes that despite the promising performance reported in the literature, data-driven FDD methods still face many challenges, such as real-building deployment, performance evaluation and benchmarking, scalability and transferability, interpretability, cyber security and data privacy, user experience, etc. Addressing these challenges is critical for a broad real-building adoption of data-driven FDD.

COVID-19 is spreading widely, and the pandemic is seriously threatening public health throughout the world. A comprehensive study on the optimal sampling types and timing for an efficient SARS-CoV-2 test has not been reported. We collected clinical information and the values of 55 biochemical indices for 237 COVID-19 patients, with 37 matched non-COVID-19 pneumonia patients and 131 healthy people in Inner Mongolia as control. In addition, the results of dynamic detection of SARS-CoV-2 using oropharynx swab, pharynx swab, and feces were collected from 197 COVID-19 patients. SARS-CoV-2 RNA positive in feces specimen was present in approximately one-third of COVID-19 patients. The positive detection rate of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in feces was significantly higher than both in the oropharynx and nasopharynx swab (P < 0.05) in the late period of the disease, which is not the case in the early period of the disease. There were statistically significant differences in the levels of blood LDH, CRP, platelet count, neutrophilic granulocyte count, white blood cell number, and lymphocyte count between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 pneumonia patients. Finally, we developed and compared five machine-learning models to predict the prognosis of COVID-19 patients based on biochemical indices at disease onset and demographic characteristics. The best model achieved an area under the curve of 0.853 in the 10-fold cross-validation.

This study was to develop a computer vision evaluation method to automatically measure the degree of scoliosis based on the machine learning algorithm. For the X-ray images of 204 patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent full-spine radiography, histogram equalization of original image was performed before a flipping method was used to magnify asymmetric elements, search for the global maximum pixel value in each line, and scan local maximal pixel value, with the intersection set of two point sets being regarded as candidate anchor points. All fine anchors were fitted with cubic spline algorithm to obtain the approximate curve of the spine, and the degree of scoliosis was measured by the standardized integral area. All measured data were analyzed. In manual measurement, the Cobb angle was 11.70–25.00 (20.15 ± 3.60), 25.20–44.70 (33.89 ± 5.41), and 45.10–49.40 (46.98 ± 1.25) in the mild, moderate and severe scoliosis group, respectively, whereas the value for the standardized integral area algorithm was 0.072–0.298 (0.185 ± 0.040), 0.100–0.399 (0.245 ± 0.050), and 0.246–0.901 (0.349 ± 0.181) in the mild, moderate and severe scoliosis group, respectively. Correlation analysis between the manual measurement of the Cobb angle and the evaluation of the standardized integral area algorithm demonstrated the Spearman correlation coefficient r = 0.643 (P < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between the manual measurement of the Cobb angle and the measurement of the standardized integral area value. Two methods had good consistency in evaluating the degree of scoliosis. ROC curve analysis of the standardized integral area algorithm to measure the degree of scoliosis showed he cutoff value of the standardized integral area algorithm was 0.20 for the moderate scoliosis with an AUC of 0.865, sensitivity 0.907, specificity 0.635, accuracy 0.779, positive prediction value 0.737 and negative prediction value 0.859, and the cutoff value of the standardized integral area algorithm was 0.40 for the severe scoliosis with an AUC of 0.873, sensitivity 0.188, specificity 1.00, accuracy 0.936, positive prediction value 1 and a negative prediction value 0.935. Using the standardized integral area as an independent variable and the Cobb angle as a dependent variable, a linear regression equation was established as Cobb angle = 13.36 + 70.54 × Standardized area, the model has statistical significance. In conclusion, the integrated area algorithm method of machine learning can quickly and efficiently assess the degree of scoliosis and is suitable for screening the degree of scoliosis in a large dataset as a useful supplement to the fine measurement of scoliosis Cobb angle. Auscultation is crucial for the diagnosis of respiratory system diseases. However, traditional stethoscopes have inherent limitations, such as inter-listener variability and subjectivity, and they cannot record respiratory sounds for offline/retrospective diagnosis or remote prescriptions in telemedicine. The emergence of digital stethoscopes has overcome these limitations by allowing physicians to store and share respiratory sounds for consultation and education. On this basis, machine learning, particularly deep learning, enables the fully-automatic analysis of lung sounds that may pave the way for intelligent stethoscopes. This review thus aims to provide a comprehensive overview of deep learning algorithms used for lung sound analysis to emphasize the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in this field. We focus on each component of deep learning-based lung sound analysis systems, including the task categories, public datasets, denoising methods, and, most importantly, existing deep learning methods, i.e., the state-of-the-art approaches to convert lung sounds into two-dimensional (2D) spectrograms and use convolutional neural networks for the end-to-end recognition of respiratory diseases or abnormal lung sounds. Additionally, this review highlights current challenges in this field, including the variety of devices, noise sensitivity, and poor interpretability of deep models. • A discrete Bayesian Network (DisBN) method is developed to diagnose cross-level faults in HVAC systems. • Weather and schedule-based pattern matching (WPM) method is used to generate the baseline and part of DisBN parameters. • System operation interval data is collected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed WPM-DisBN method. • The root causes of cross-level faults can be diagnosed and isolated to address the shortcomings of component-level fault diagnostic solutions. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) technologies are critical to ensure satisfactory building performance, such as reducing energy wastes and negative impacts on occupant comfort and productivity. Existing FDD technologies mainly focus on component-level FDD solutions, which could lead to mis-diagnosis of cross-level faults in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Cross-level faults are those faults that occur in one component or subsystem, but cause operational abnormalities in other components or subsystems, and result in a building level performance degradation. How to effectively diagnose the root cause of a cross-level fault is the focus of this study. This paper presents a novel discrete Bayesian Network (DisBN)-based method for diagnosing cross-level faults in an HVAC system commonly used in commercial buildings. A two-level DisBN structure model is developed in this study. The parameters used in the DisBN model are obtained either from expert knowledge or through machine-learning strategies from normal system operation data. Meanwhile, the probability parameters are discretized to incorporate the uncertainties associated with typical expert knowledge. Thus, the developed DisBN method addresses the challenges many other BN based FDD methods face, i.e., the lack of fault data for BN parameter training. The developed DisBN represents causal relationships between a fault and its cross-level system impacts (i.e., fault symptoms or fault indicators) by considering how fault impacts propagate across different levels in an HVAC system. A weather and schedule information-based Pattern Matching (WPM) method is employed to automatically create WPM baseline data sets for each incoming real time snapshot data from the building systems. Consequently, BN inference and real-time diagnostics are achieved by comparing incoming snapshot data and the WPM baseline data set. The proposed method is evaluated using experimental fault data collected in a campus building. Literature on building Automatic Fault Detection and Diagnosis (AFDD) mainly focuses on simulated system data due to high expenses and difficulties of obtaining and analyzing real building data. There is a lack of validation on performances and scalabilities of data-driven AFDD approaches using simulated data and how it compares to that from real building data. In this study, we conduct two sets of experiments to seek answers to this question. We first evaluate data-driven fault detection strategies on real and simulated building data separately. We observe that the fault detection performances are not affected by fault detection strategies, sizes of training data, and the number of cross-validation folds when training and blind test data come from the same data source, namely, simulated or real building data. Next, we conduct a cross-dataset study, that is, develop the model using simulated data and tested on real building data. The results indicate the model trained on simulated data is not generalized to be applied for real building data for fault detection. Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test is conducted to confirm that there exist statistical differences between the simulated and real building data and identify a subset of features with similarities between the two datasets. Using the subset of the feature, cross-dataset experiments show fault detection improvements on most fault cases. We conclude that even if the system produces simulated data with the same fault symptoms from physical analysis perspectives, not all features from simulated datasets may not be beneficial for AFDD but only a subset of features contains valuable information from a machine learning perspective. We present a practical machine learning (ML) method for serving accessible nonlinear functions, which tackles a regression problem with tremendous parameters. By solving the modified Lugiato–Lefever equation, datasets for emulating the silicon-on-insulator platform and generating the on-chip optical frequency comb (OFC) are gathered. Furthermore, a feed-forward network-based ML model is used to train the datasets, and the prediction of the related parameters is implemented synchronously. Numerical results show that the model combining the finite element method with the ML technique is capable of predicting the properties of on-chip frequency combs for the first time, as far as we know, paving the way for analyzing OFCs based on integrated silicon photonics. The surge of machine learning and increasing data accessibility in buildings provide great opportunities for applying machine learning to building energy system modeling and analysis. Building load prediction is one of the most critical components for many building control and analytics activities, as well as grid-interactive and energy efficiency building operation. While a large number of research papers exist on the topic of machine-learning-based building load prediction, a comprehensive review from the perspective of machine learning is missing. In this paper, we review the application of machine learning techniques in building load prediction under the organization and logic of the machine learning, which is to perform tasks T using Performance measure P and based on learning from Experience E. Firstly, we review the applications of building load prediction model (task T). Then, we review the modeling algorithms that improve machine learning performance and accuracy (performance P). Throughout the papers, we also review the literature from the data perspective for modeling (experience E), including data engineering from the sensor level to data level, pre-processing, feature extraction and selection. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of well-studied and relatively unexplored fields for future research reference.
