Background: Gadolinium-based contrast agents are commonly used in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), however, they cannot be used by patients with allergic reactions or poor renal function. For long-term follow-up patients, gadolinium deposition in the body can cause nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and other potential risks., Purpose: Developing a new method of enhanced image synthesis based on the advantages of multisequence MRI has important clinical value for these patients. In this paper, an end-to-end synthesis model structure similarity index measure (SSIM)-based Dual Constrastive Learning with Attention (SDACL) based on contrastive learning is proposed to synthesize contrast-enhanced T1 (T1ce) using three unenhanced MRI images of T1, T2, and Flair in patients with glioma., Methods: The model uses the attention-dilation generator to enlarge the receptive field by expanding the residual blocks and to strengthen the feature representation and context learning of multisequence MRI. To enhance the detail and texture performance of the imaged tumor area, a comprehensive loss function combining patch-level contrast loss and structural similarity loss is created, which can effectively suppress noise and ensure the consistency of synthesized images and real images., Results: The normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and SSIM of the model on the independent test set are 0.307  ± $\pm$  0.12, 23.337  ± $\pm$  3.21, and 0.881  ± $\pm$  0.05, respectively., Conclusions: Results show this method can be used for the multisequence synthesis of T1ce images, which can provide valuable information for clinical diagnosis., (© 2024 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.)

Background and Objective: Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving treatment for critically-ill patients. During treatment, patient-ventilator asynchrony (PVA) can occur, which can lead to pulmonary damage, complications, and higher mortality. While traditional detection methods for PVAs rely on visual inspection by clinicians, in recent years, machine learning models are being developed to detect PVAs automatically. However, training these models requires large labeled datasets, which are difficult to obtain, as labeling is a labour-intensive and time-consuming task, requiring clinical expertise. Simulating the lung-ventilator interactions has been proposed to obtain large labeled datasets to train machine learning classifiers. However, the obtained data lacks the influence of different hardware, of servo-controlled algorithms, and different sources of noise. Here, we propose VentGAN, an adversarial learning approach to improve simulated data by learning the ventilator fingerprints from unlabeled clinical data., Methods: In VentGAN, the loss functions are designed to add characteristics of clinical waveforms to the generated results, while preserving the labels of the simulated waveforms. To validate VentGAN, we compare the performance for detection and classification of PVAs when training a previously developed machine learning algorithm with the original simulated data and with the data generated by VentGAN. Testing is performed on independent clinical data labeled by experts. Understanding natural selection and other forms of non-neutrality is a major focus for the use of machine learning in population genetics. Existing methods rely on computationally intensive simulated training data. Unlike efficient neutral coalescent simulations for demographic inference, realistic simulations of selection typically require slow forward simulations. Because there are many possible modes of selection, a high dimensional parameter space must be explored, with no guarantee that the simulated models are close to the real processes. Finally, it is difficult to interpret trained neural networks, leading to a lack of understanding about what features contribute to classification. Here we develop a new approach to detect selection and other local evolutionary processes that requires relatively few selection simulations during training. We build upon a generative adversarial network trained to simulate realistic neutral data. This consists of a generator (fitted demographic model), and a discriminator (convolutional neural network) that predicts whether a genomic region is real or fake. As the generator can only generate data under neutral demographic processes, regions of real data that the discriminator recognizes as having a high probability of being "real" do not fit the neutral demographic model and are therefore candidates for targets of selection. To incentivize identification of a specific mode of selection, we fine-tune the discriminator with a small number of custom non-neutral simulations. We show that this approach has high power to detect various forms of selection in simulations, and that it finds regions under positive selection identified by state-of-the-art population genetic methods in three human populations. Generative models, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), have recently shown remarkable capabilities in various generation tasks. However, the success of these models heavily depends on the availability of a large-scale training dataset. When the size of the training dataset is limited, the quality and diversity of the generated results suffer from severe degradation. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, Reverse Contrastive Learning (RCL), to address the problem of high-quality and diverse image generation under few-shot settings. The success of RCL benefits from a two-sided, powerful regularization. Our proposed regularization is designed based on the correlation between generated samples, which can effectively utilize the latent feature information between different levels of samples. It does not require any auxiliary information or augmentation techniques. A series of qualitative and quantitative results show that our proposed method is superior to the existing State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) methods under the few-shot setting and is still competitive under the low-shot setting, showcasing the effectiveness of RCL. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) typically comes at the cost of small spatial coverage, high expenses and long scan times. Accelerating MRI acquisition by taking less measurements yields the potential to relax these inherent forfeits. Recent breakthroughs in the field of Machine Learning have shown high-resolution (HR) images could be recovered from low-resolution (LR) signals via super-resolution (SR). In particular, a novel class of neural networks named Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) has manifested an alternative way of conceiving models capable of generating data. GANs can learn to infer details based on some prior information, subsequently recovering missing data. Accordingly, they manifest huge potential in MRI reconstruction and acceleration tasks. This paper conducts a review on GAN-based SR methods, exhibiting the immersive ability of GANs on upscaling MRIs by a scale factor of ×4 while at the same time maintaining trustworthy and high-frequency details. In this review, we describe the current status and challenges in applying machine-learning techniques to the analysis and prediction of pharmacokinetic data. The theory of pharmacokinetics has been developed over decades on the basis of physiology and reaction kinetics. Mathematical models allow the reduction of pharmacokinetic data to parameter values, giving insight and understanding into ADME processes and predicting the outcome of different dosing scenarios. However, much information hidden in the data is lost through conceptual simplification with models. It is difficult to use mechanistic models alone to predict diverse pharmacokinetic time profiles, including inter-drug and inter-individual differences, in a cross-sectional manner. Machine learning is a prediction platform that can handle complex phenomena through data-driven analysis. As a resule, machine learning has been successfully adopted in various fields, including image recognition and language processing, and has been used for over two decades in pharmacokinetic research, primarily in the area of quantitative structure-activity relationships for pharmacokinetic parameters. Machine-learning models are generally known to provide better predictive performance than conventional linear models. Owing to the recent success in deep learning, models with new structures are being consistently proposed. These models include transfer learning and generative adversarial networks, which contribute to the effective use of a limited amount of data by diverting existing similar models or generating pseudo-data. Digital health applications can improve quality and effectiveness of healthcare, by offering a number of new tools to users, which are often considered a medical device. Assuring their safe operation requires, amongst others, clinical validation, needing large datasets to test them in realistic clinical scenarios. Access to datasets is challenging, due to patient privacy concerns. Development of synthetic datasets is seen as a potential alternative. The objective of the paper is the development of a method for the generation of realistic synthetic datasets, statistically equivalent to real clinical datasets, and demonstrate that the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based approach is fit for purpose. A generative adversarial network was implemented and trained, in a series of six experiments, using numerical and categorical variables, including ICD-9 and laboratory codes, from three clinically relevant datasets. A number of contextual steps provided the success criteria for the synthetic dataset. A synthetic dataset that exhibits very similar statistical characteristics with the real dataset was generated. Pairwise association of variables is very similar. A high degree of Jaccard similarity and a successful K-S test further support this. The proof of concept of generating realistic synthetic datasets was successful, with the approach showing promise for further work.

To better understand the molecular basis of respiratory diseases of viral origin, high-throughput gene-expression data are frequently taken by means of DNA microarray or RNA-seq technology. Such data can also be useful to classify infected individuals by molecular signatures in the form of machine-learning models with genes as predictor variables. Early diagnosis of patients by molecular signatures could also contribute to better treatments. An approach that has rarely been considered for machine-learning models in the context of transcriptomics is data augmentation. For other data types it has been shown that augmentation can improve classification accuracy and prevent overfitting. Here, we compare three strategies for data augmentation of DNA microarray and RNA-seq data from two selected studies on respiratory diseases of viral origin. The first study involves samples of patients with either viral or bacterial origin of the respiratory disease, the second study involves patients with either SARS-CoV-2 or another respiratory virus as disease origin. Specifically, we reanalyze these public datasets to study whether patient classification by transcriptomic signatures can be improved when adding artificial data for training of the machine-learning models. Our comparison reveals that augmentation of transcriptomic data can improve the classification accuracy and that fewer genes are necessary as explanatory variables in the final models. We also report genes from our signatures that overlap with signatures presented in the original publications of our example data. Due to strict selection criteria, the molecular role of these genes in the context of respiratory infectious diseases is underlined.

How can deep neural networks encode information that corresponds to words in human speech into raw acoustic data? This paper proposes two neural network architectures for modeling unsupervised lexical learning from raw acoustic inputs: ciwGAN (Categorical InfoWaveGAN) and fiwGAN (Featural InfoWaveGAN). These combine Deep Convolutional GAN architecture for audio data (WaveGAN; Donahue et al., 2019) with the information theoretic extension of GAN - InfoGAN (Chen et al., 2016) - and propose a new latent space structure that can model featural learning simultaneously with a higher level classification and allows for a very low-dimension vector representation of lexical items. In addition to the Generator and Discriminator networks, the architectures introduce a network that learns to retrieve latent codes from generated audio outputs. Lexical learning is thus modeled as emergent from an architecture that forces a deep neural network to output data such that unique information is retrievable from its acoustic outputs. The networks trained on lexical items from the TIMIT corpus learn to encode unique information corresponding to lexical items in the form of categorical variables in their latent space. By manipulating these variables, the network outputs specific lexical items. The network occasionally outputs innovative lexical items that violate training data, but are linguistically interpretable and highly informative for cognitive modeling and neural network interpretability. Innovative outputs suggest that phonetic and phonological representations learned by the network can be productively recombined and directly paralleled to productivity in human speech: a fiwGAN network trained on suit and dark outputs innovative start, even though it never saw start or even a [st] sequence in the training data. We also argue that setting latent featural codes to values well beyond training range results in almost categorical generation of prototypical lexical items and reveals underlying values of each latent code. . De novo drug design is a computational approach that generates novel molecular structures from atomic building blocks with no a priori relationships. Conventional methods include structure-based and ligand-based design, which depend on the properties of the active site of a biological target or its known active binders, respectively. Artificial intelligence, including machine learning, is an emerging field that has positively impacted the drug discovery process. Deep reinforcement learning is a subdivision of machine learning that combines artificial neural networks with reinforcement-learning architectures. This method has successfully been employed to develop novel de novo drug design approaches using a variety of artificial networks including recurrent neural networks, convolutional neural networks, generative adversarial networks, and autoencoders. Periapical Radiographs are commonly used to detect several anomalies, like caries, periodontal, and periapical diseases. Even considering that digital imaging systems used nowadays tend to provide high-quality images, external factors, or even system limitations can result in a vast amount of radiographic images with low quality and resolution. Commercial solutions offer tools based on interpolation methods to increase image resolution. However, previous literature shows that these methods may create undesirable effects in the images affecting the diagnosis accuracy. One alternative is using deep learning-based super-resolution methods to achieve better high-resolution images. Nevertheless, the amount of data for training such models is limited, demanding transfer learning approaches. In this work, we propose the use of super-resolution generative adversarial network (SRGAN) models and transfer learning to achieve periapical images with higher quality and resolution. Moreover, we evaluate the influence of using the transfer learning approach and the datasets selected for it in the final generated images. For that, we performed an experiment comparing the performance of the SRGAN models (with and without transfer learning) with other super-resolution methods. Considering Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and Mean Opinion Score (MOS), the results of SRGAN models using transfer learning were better on average. This superiority was also verified statistically using the Wilcoxon paired test. Image synthesis is currently one of the most addressed image processing topic in computer vision and deep learning fields of study. Researchers have tackled this problem focusing their efforts on its several challenging problems, e.g. image quality and size, domain and pose changing, architecture of the networks, and so on. Above all, producing images belonging to different domains by using a single architecture is a very relevant goal for image generation. In fact, a single multi-domain network would allow greater flexibility and robustness in the image synthesis task than other approaches. This paper proposes a novel architecture and a training algorithm, which are able to produce multi-domain outputs using a single network. A small portion of a dataset is intentionally used, and there are no hard-coded labels (or classes). This is achieved by combining a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) for image generation and a Meta-Learning algorithm for domain switch, and we called our approach MetalGAN. As a major step forward in machine learning, generative adversarial networks (GANs) employ the Wasserstein distance as a metric between the generative distribution and target data distribution, and thus can be viewed as optimal transport (OT) problems to reflect the underlying geometry of the probability distribution. However, the unequal dimensions between the source random distribution and the target data, result in often instability in the training processes, and lack of diversity in the generative images. To resolve the challenges, we propose here a multiple-projection approach, to project the source and target probability measures into multiple different low-dimensional subspaces. Moreover, we show that the original problem can be transformed into a variant multi-marginal OT problem, and we provide the explicit properties of the solutions. Purpose: As affordable equipment, electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) are wildly used in radiation therapy departments to verify patients' positions for accurate radiotherapy. However, these devices tend to produce visually ambiguous and low-contrast planar digital radiographs under megavoltage x ray (MV-DRs), which poses a tremendous challenge for clinicians to perform multimodal registration between the MV-DRs and the kilovoltage digital reconstructed radiographs (KV-DRRs) developed from the planning computed tomography. Furthermore, the existent of strong appearance variations also makes accurate registration beyond the reach of current automatic algorithms., Methods: We propose a novel modality conversion approach to this task that first synthesizes KV images from MV-DRs, and then registers the synthesized and real KV-DRRs. We focus on the synthesis technique and develop a conditional generative adversarial network with information bottleneck extension (IB-cGAN) that takes MV-DRs and nonaligned KV-DRRs as inputs and outputs synthesized KV images. IB-cGAN is designed to address two main challenges in deep-learning-based synthesis: (a) training with a roughly aligned dataset suffering from noisy correspondences; (b) making synthesized images have real clinical meanings that faithfully reflects MV-DRs rather than nonaligned KV-DRRs. Accordingly, IB-cGAN employs (a) an adversarial loss to provide training supervision at semantic level rather than the imprecise pixel level; (b) an IB to constrain the information from the nonaligned KV-DRRs., Results: We collected 2698 patient scans to train the model and 208 scans to test its performance. The qualitative results demonstrate realistic KV images can be synthesized allowing clinicians to perform the visual registration. The quantitative results show it significantly outperforms current nonmodality conversion methods by 22.37% (P = 0.0401) in terms of registration accuracy., Conclusions: The modality conversion approach facilitates the downstream MV-KV registration for both clinicians and off-the-shelf registration algorithms. Laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) has become the de facto choice for metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Even after considerable research investments, components manufactured using L-PBF lack consistency in their quality. Realizing the crucial role of the melt pool in controlling the final build quality, we predict the morphology of the melt pool directly from the build commands in an L-PBF process. We leverage machine learning techniques to predict quantitative attributes like the size as well as qualitative attributes like the shape of the melt pool. The area of the melt pool is predicted using an LSTM network. The outlined LSTM-based approach estimates the area with $ 90.7\% $ 90.7 % accuracy. The shape is inferred by synthesising the images of the melt pool by using a Melt Pool Generative Adversarial Network (MP-GAN). The synthetic images attain a structural similarity score of 0.91. The precision and accuracy of the results showcase the efficacy of the outlined approach and pave the way for real-time monitoring and control of the melt pool to build products with consistently better quality. The demand for specialized hardware to train AI models has increased in tandem with the increase in the model complexity over the recent years. Graphics processing unit (GPU) is one such hardware that is capable of parallelizing operations performed on a large chunk of data. Companies like Nvidia, AMD, and Google have been constantly scaling-up the hardware performance as fast as they can. Nevertheless, there is still a gap between the required processing power and processing capacity of the hardware. To increase the hardware utilization, the software has to be optimized too. In this paper, we present some general GPU optimization techniques we used to efficiently train the optiGAN model, a Generative Adversarial Network that is capable of generating multidimensional probability distributions of optical photons at the photodetector face in radiation detectors, on an 8GB Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 GPU. We analyze and compare the performances of all the optimizations based on the execution time and the memory consumed using the Nvidia Nsight Systems profiler tool. The optimizations gave approximately a 4.5x increase in the runtime performance when compared to a naive training on the GPU, without compromising the model performance. Finally we discuss optiGANs future work and how we are planning to scale the model on GPUs.

Accurately predicting the 28-day compressive strength (CS) of carbon nanotube-reinforced cement composites (CNTRCCs) is crucial for accelerating their application in civil engineering. However, manual data collection for CNTRCCs is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, further exacerbated by the relatively small quantity of available data. In light of these challenges, this work proposes an augmented technique called improved conditional tabular generative adversarial network (ICTGAN). The primary objective of ICTGAN is to augment the original training set, with the ultimate aim of improving the accuracy of the machine learning (ML) model in predicting CS of CNTRCCs. Furthermore, this study employs natural language processing (NLP) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) techniques to extract precise information from non-numeric features and integrate them into the ML models. The findings demonstrate that the most significant enhancement effect is observed when the ratio of the generated datasets to the original datasets is 0.5, with R2 being 0.954. Simultaneously, employing NLP and MLP techniques to extract non-numeric feature information is found to be superior to traditional code methods. Additionally, the AutoGluon (AG) framework used in this work enables faster model deployment than traditional ML workflows and avoids the time-consuming process of tuning hyperparameters. In the digital era, e-platforms ubiquitously deploy recommendation systems, utilizing machine learning paradigms to tailor content according to user preferences and needs. Yet, the integrity of these systems is often compromised by shilling attacks, where malicious entities inject fake user profiles to skew product exposure and sales. This vulnerability has catalyzed research efforts to bolster the robustness and security of recommendation systems, primarily through controlled attacks and reinforcement training. This paper introduces an innovative approach to combat the inefficiency of traditional single-target shilling attacks. We propose a novel multi-target shilling strategy for black-box recommendation systems, capable of generating convincing and aggressive fake user profiles. Given the complexity of the recommendation system algorithms, we employ surrogate models to replicate and understand the target system's behavior. The surrogate model is then subjected to attacks using our proposed methodology. An attack is deemed successful when it achieves an 80% or higher success rate against the surrogate, preluding an attack on the actual recommendation system. Our model, RWA-GAN, stands out by integrating two components: a generative adversarial network (GAN) for crafting realistic fake user profiles, and a mechanism to enhance attack success rates. This dual approach not only expedites the attack process but also ensures the generation of more authentic and well-distributed fake profiles, making the model easier to migrate. Recent years have seen great research enthusiasm for the application of artificial intelligence techniques to support mineral exploration. Various supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms have been introduced to the field of mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM), as ML models can automatically construct the complex relationships between known mineral deposits and exploration data. However, the limited number of ore deposits in mineral exploration practice poses a great challenge when using supervised ML models. In this study, we focused on applying semi-supervised ML models, including semi-supervised random forest (SSRF) and support vector machine (S3VM), to address the scarcity problems of ore deposits in ML-based MPM, in order to develop a novel scheme based on generative adversarial networks (SemiGAN) for more accurate MPM. Notably, in order to exclude high-risk unlabeled samples in semi-supervised models, a new scheme was proposed to select representative unlabeled samples by calculating similarity based on principal component analysis and cosine distance. A case study of W–Sn mineral prospectivity modeling in the Nanling metallogenic belt in South China was used to validate the proposed semi-supervised machine learning (SSML) methods. The results show that SemiGAN achieves the highest prediction accuracy (88.3%) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC = 0.954). Moreover, the MPMs obtained by SSML predictive models including SemiGAN, SSRF, and S3VM contain more known deposits (105, 105, and 82, respectively) than supervised machine learning predictive models (e.g., RF and SVM, with 66 and 52, respectively) in the top 5% high-potential area. The SSML methods outperform the supervised learning methods in terms of the proportion of mineral deposits and predictive rate curves in the high-potential area. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical data processing is increasingly prevalent due to its diagnostic and analytical competencies. Numerous deep learning models have been applied to medical data analyses, including the Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) for its competence of temporal pattern abstraction. However, TCN may be suboptimal for modeling longer-range dependencies in EEG data, lacking metric learning and data clustering mechanisms. In other words, there is neither metric learning nor a data clustering mechanism in the conventional TCN architecture. Therefore, an enhanced TCN model is devised, namely Metric Learning-based Temporal Convolutional Network for EEG signals (MLTCN-EEG), to tackle the challenges associated with classifying seizure and non-seizure EEG signals. Specifically, in the proposed model, metric learning is integrated into the TCN architecture to learn discriminative feature spaces. This enhances the extraction of complex patterns inherent in EEG data, boosting the model's classification competency. In other words, this study formulates and integrates a specialized metric learning component within the temporal convolutional architecture, enabling the model to discern subtle variations crucial for accurate seizure identification. Despite facing the common challenge of unbalanced training data in deep neural network training, this study also explores and assesses two methods for balancing datasets: sub-sampling and Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN). The empirical results demonstrate that MLTCN-EEG with a DCGAN-balanced dataset exhibits superior performance compared to other existing techniques, showcasing its efficacy in distinguishing seizure events with superior classification performance. The proposed model achieves an accuracy of 99.15%, precision of 100%, recall rate of 98.35%, specificity of 100% and a remarkable F1 score of 99.16% using the University of California Irvine (UCI) Seizure datasets. Deep learning approaches for histopathology image processing and analysis are gaining increasing interest in the research field, and this comes with a demand to extract more information from images. Pathological datasets are relatively small mainly due to confidentiality of medical data and legal questions, data complexity and labeling costs. Typically, a large number of annotated images for different tissue subtypes are required as training samples to automate the learning algorithms. In this paper, we present a latent-to-image approach for generating synthetic images by applying a Conditional Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network for generating images of human colorectal cancer and healthy tissue. We generate high-quality images of various tissue types that preserve the general structure and features of the source classes, and we investigate an important yet overlooked aspect of data generation: ensuring privacy-preserving capabilities. The quality of these images is evaluated through perceptual experiments with pathologists and the Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) metric. Using the generated data to train classifiers improved MobileNet's accuracy by 35.36%, and also enhanced the accuracies of DenseNet, ResNet, and EfficientNet. We further validated the robustness and versatility of our model on a different dataset, yielding promising results. Additionally, we make a novel contribution by addressing security and privacy concerns in personal medical image data, ensuring that training medical images "fingerprints" are not contained in the synthetic images generated with the model we propose. In this study, we propose a novel method for generating untargeted adversarial examples using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) in an unrestricted black-box environment. The proposed approach produces adversarial examples that are classified into random classes distinct from their original labels, while maintaining high visual similarity to the original samples from a human perspective. This is achieved by leveraging the capabilities of StyleGAN to manipulate the latent space representation of images, enabling precise control over visual distortions. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, we conducted experiments using the CelebA-HQ dataset and TensorFlow as the machine learning framework, with ResNet18 serving as the target classifier. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, achieving a 100% attack success rate in a black-box environment after 3000 iterations. Moreover, the adversarial examples generated by our approach exhibit a distortion value of 0.069 based on the Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS) metric, highlighting the balance between attack success and perceptual similarity. Federated learning (FL), as a distributed learning mechanism, can have model training completed without directly uploading original data, effectively reducing the risk of privacy leakage. However, through the shared gradient information, research shows that adversaries may reconstruct the original data. To further protect the privacy of federated learning, a federated learning defense scheme is proposed based on generative adversarial networks (GAN), which is combined with adaptive differential privacy. Firstly, the real data distribution features are learned through GAN, and replaceable pseudo data are generated. Then, the pseudo data are added with adaptive noise. Finally, the pseudo gradient generated by the pseudo data in the model is used to replace the real gradient so that adversaries cannot obtain the real gradient to further protect the privacy of user data. After simulation experiments are carried out on the MNIST dataset, the algorithm is verified using the gradient attack method. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the federated learning algorithm based on differential privacy in accuracy. Generating photo-realistic images that align with the text descriptions is the goal of the text-to-image generation (T2I) model. They can assist in visualizing the descriptions thanks to advancements in machine learning algorithms. Using text as a source, generative adversarial networks (GANs) can generate a series of pictures that serve as descriptions. Recent GANs have allowed oldest T2I models to achieve remarkable gains. However, they have some limitations. The main target of this study is to address these limitations to enhance the text-to-image generation models to enhance location services. To produce high-quality photos utilizing a multi-step approach, we build an attentional generating network called AttnGAN. The fine-grained image-text matching loss needed to train the AttnGAN's generator is computed using our multimodal similarity model. With an inception score of 4.81 on the PatternNet dataset, our AttnGAN model achieves an impressive R-precision value of 70.61 percent. Because the PatternNet dataset comprises photographs, we've added verbal descriptions to each one to make it a text-based dataset instead. The surging demand for Ni and Co, driven by the acceleration of clean energy transitions, has sparked interest in the Lachlan Orogen of New South Wales for its potential lateritic Ni–Co resources. Despite recent discoveries, a substantial knowledge gap exists in understanding the full scope of these critical metals in this geological province. This study employed a machine learning-based framework, integrating multidimensional datasets to create prospectivity maps for lateritic Ni–Co deposits within a specific Lachlan Orogen segment. The framework generated a variety of data-driven models incorporating geological (rock units, metamorphic facies), structural, and geophysical (magnetics, gravity, radiometrics, and remote sensing spectroscopy) data layers. These models ranged from comprehensive models that use all available data layers to fine-tuned models restricted to high-ranking features. Additionally, two hybrid (knowledge-data-driven) models distinguished between hypogene and supergene components of the lateritic Ni–Co mineral systems. The study implemented data augmentation methods and tackled imbalances in training samples using the SMOTE–GAN method, addressing common machine learning challenges with sparse training data. The study overcame difficulties in defining negative training samples by translating geological and geophysical data into training proxy layers and employing a positive and unlabeled bagging technique. The prospectivity maps revealed a robust spatial correlation between high probabilities and known mineral occurrences, projecting extensions from these sites and identifying potential greenfield areas for future exploration in the Lachlan Orogen. Geometric variations and uncertainty are generally observed on every manufactured workpiece and have a critical influence on the functional performance of mechanical parts. In computer-aided tolerancing, the Skin Model Shapes framework is recognized as a novel paradigm to embed the expected and observed geometric variations of mechanical products based on discrete geometry representation schemes. Currently, the generation of Skin Model Shapes is still limited due to the lack of knowledge-based parameter settings in the design process, and the consideration of enriched simulation and measurement data. In this paper, a novel method based on two distinct techniques, namely Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Hessian Locally Linear Embedding (HLLE), is proposed to generate Skin Model Shapes without any explicitly defined parameters. A Wasserstein GAN structure is trained for generating patterns of geometric deviations based on simulation data. Geometric deviations on planar and cylindrical surfaces are considered in a training process since both types of surfaces are widely used in mechanical engineering. HLLE is used in the paper to extend the implementation of the proposed deviation mapping process from planar/cylindrical surfaces to other types of surfaces scattered in 3D space. The proposed Skin Model Shapes generation process enables the efficient generation of part representatives with geometric deviations without the need for extensive deviation modeling. Meanwhile, the proposed method overcomes the common limitation of simulating different types (e.g. rotational and freeform) of non-ideal surfaces on Skin Model Shapes. The implemented case studies show that our method can be used to generate hundreds of distinct Skin Model Shapes within seconds while the distributions of simulated geometric deviations on the surfaces are consistent with the measurement results. Personalized sports training plans are essential for addressing individual athlete needs, but traditional methods often need to integrate diverse data types, limiting adaptability and effectiveness. Existing machine learning (ML) and rule-based approaches cannot dynamically generate context-specific training programs, reducing their applicability in real-world scenarios. This study aims to develop a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)- based framework to create context-specific training plans by integrating numeric attributes (e.g., age, heart rate) and motion features from video data. The research focuses on improving context-specific efficiency and real-time adaptability while addressing the limitations of traditional methods. The proposed GAN framework combines numeric and motion features using a generator-discriminator architecture to produce tailored training plans. The model is evaluated quantitatively through metrics like mean square error (MSE) and generation time and qualitatively through subjective ratings from athletes and coaches using a five-point Likert scale for context-specific, scientificity, applicability, and feasibility. Statistical significance is analyzed using ANOVA testing. The proposed GAN model outperforms traditional ML and rule-based methods, achieving a 22% reduction in MSE and a 45% improvement in generation time. Subjective evaluations reveal significant improvements in context-specific and applicability, with ratings averaging 4.8/5 compared to 3.9/5 for baseline models. Training a machine learning system to evaluate any type of facial deformity is impeded by the scarcity of large datasets of high-quality, ethics board-approved patient images. We have built a deep learning-based cleft lip generator called CleftGAN designed to produce an almost unlimited number of high-fidelity facsimiles of cleft lip facial images with wide variation. A transfer learning protocol testing different versions of StyleGAN as the base model was undertaken. Data augmentation maneuvers permitted input of merely 514 frontal photographs of cleft-affected faces adapted to a base model of 70,000 normal faces. The Frechet Inception Distance was used to measure the similarity of the newly generated facial images to the cleft training dataset. Perceptual Path Length and the novel Divergence Index of Normality measures also assessed the performance of the novel image generator. CleftGAN generates vast numbers of unique faces depicting a wide range of cleft lip deformity with variation of ethnic background. Performance metrics demonstrated a high similarity of the generated images to our training dataset and a smooth, semantically valid interpolation of images through the transfer learning process. The distribution of normality for the training and generated images were highly comparable. CleftGAN is a novel instrument that generates an almost boundless number of realistic facial images depicting cleft lip. Simulations of the dark matter distribution throughout the Universe are essential in order to analyse data from cosmological surveys. N -body simulations are computationally expensive, and many cheaper alternatives (such as lognormal random fields) fail to reproduce accurate statistics of the smaller, non-linear scales. In this work, we present Psi-GAN (power-spectrum-informed generative adversarial network), a machine learning model that takes a two-dimensional lognormal dark matter density field and transforms it into a more realistic field. We construct Psi-GAN so that it is continuously conditional, and can therefore generate realistic realizations of the dark matter density field across a range of cosmologies and redshifts in |$z \in [0, 3]$|⁠. We train Psi-GAN as a generative adversarial network on |$2\, 000$| simulation boxes from the Quijote simulation suite. We use a novel critic architecture that utilizes the power spectrum as the basis for discrimination between real and generated samples. Psi-GAN shows agreement with N -body simulations over a range of redshifts and cosmologies, consistently outperforming the lognormal approximation on all tests of non-linear structure, such as being able to reproduce both the power spectrum up to wavenumbers of |$1~h~\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠ , and the bispectra of target N -body simulations to within |${\sim }5$|  per cent. The grain size of metal materials has a significant impact on their macroscopic properties. However, original metallographic images often suffer from issues such as substantial noise, missing grain boundaries, low contrast, and blurred edges. These challenges hinder the accurate extraction of complete grain boundaries, limiting the precision of grain size measurement and material performance prediction. Therefore, effectively reconstructing incomplete grain boundaries is particularly crucial. This paper proposes a grain boundary reconstruction and grain size measurement method based on an improved channel attention mechanism. A generative adversarial network (GAN) serves as the backbone, with a custom-designed channel attention module embedded in the generator. Combined with a global context attention mechanism, the method captures the global contextual information of the image, enhancing the network's semantic understanding and reconstruction accuracy for regions with missing grain boundaries. During the image reconstruction process, the method effectively leverages long-range feature correlations within the image, significantly improving network performance. To address the Mode Collapse observed during experiments, the loss function is optimized using Focal Loss, balancing the ratio of positive and negative samples and improving network robustness. Compared with other attention modules, the improved channel attention module significantly enhances the performance of the generative network. Experimental results demonstrate that the generative network based on this module outperforms comparable modules in terms of MIoU (86.25%), Accuracy (95.06%), and Precision (86.54%). The grain boundary reconstruction method based on the improved channel attention mechanism not only effectively improves the accuracy of grain boundary reconstruction but also significantly enhances the generalization ability of the network. In online services, password-based authentication, a prevalent method for user verification, is inherently vulnerable to keyboard input data attacks. To mitigate these vulnerabilities, image-based authentication methods have been introduced. However, these approaches also face significant security challenges due to the potential exposure of mouse input data. To address these threats, a protective technique that leverages the SetCursorPos() function to generate artificial mouse input data has been developed, thereby concealing genuine user inputs. Nevertheless, adversaries employing advanced machine learning techniques can distinguish between authentic and synthetic mouse data, leaving the security of mouse input data insufficiently robust. This study proposes an enhanced countermeasure utilizing Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to produce synthetic mouse data that closely emulate real user input. This approach effectively reduces the efficacy of machine learning-based adversarial attacks. Furthermore, to counteract real-time threats, the proposed method dynamically generates synthetic data based on historical user mouse sequences and integrates it with real-time inputs. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method reduces the classification accuracy of mouse input data by adversaries to approximately 62%, thereby validating its efficacy in strengthening the security of mouse data. The high prevalence of fraud in contemporary financial transactions necessitates advanced anomaly detection systems to address the significant imbalance between legitimate and anomalous transactions in real-time datasets. To address this issue, our study introduces a novel approach, the regularized generative adversarial network (R-GAN). Diverging from conventional resampling techniques and typical generative adversarial network (GAN) architectures, R-GAN incorporates spectral normalization for the STGAN (short for spectral normalization for GAN) generator framework, which enhances it with a similarity measure loss to improve the authenticity of the generated data. The discriminator is meticulously designed, leveraging the CELU (short for continuously differentiable exponential linear unit) activation for optimal feature extraction, ensuring diverse and representative sample generation. To ensure fairness and validate the effectiveness of our data generation process, we used PyCaret's automated machine learning framework to rigorously test different machine learning models, ultimately identifying the light gradient boosting machine as the most effective. To add transparency to our system, we applied Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), providing clear insights into the decisions made by our explainable artificial intelligence-driven model. Over the past two decades, machine learning (ML) has transformed manufacturing, particularly in optimizing production and quality control. A significant challenge in ML applications is obtaining sufficient training data, which data augmentation aims to address. While widely applied to image, text, and sound data, data augmentation for numerical data in manufacturing has seen limited investigation. This paper empirically compares three data augmentation techniques—generative adversarial networks, variational auto-encoders mixed with long-short-term memory, and warping—on four manufacturing datasets. It also provides a literature review, highlighting that generative models are the most common technique for numerical manufacturing data. As a promising model in Quantum Machine Learning (QML), Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks (QGANs) are rapidly advancing, offering applications in image processing and generation. However, another emerging paradigm represents an image as a Quantum Implicit Neural Representation (QINR). In this work, we propose a novel architectural technique for building QINR-based QGAN to enhance the quality of images generated by QGANs. Additionally, we integrate classical techniques, such as Gradient Penalty and Wasserstein distance, to train QINR-QGAN. In image generation tasks, we demonstrated that QINR-QGAN can achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art (SOTA) models while significantly reducing the number of trainable quantum parameters. Specifically, QINR-QGAN reduced the trainable quantum parameters by nearly 10 times compared to PQWGAN (Tsang et al. in IEEE Trans. Quantum Eng. 4:1–19, 2023) and Quantum AnoGAN (Herr et al. Quantum Sci. Technol. 6(4): 045004, 2021), demonstrating its superior efficiency in parameter optimization without sacrificing performance. Furthermore, we conducted experiments on the CelebA dataset to tackle a more complex task and generate larger images (78 × 64 ). Improved hardware and processing techniques such as synthetic aperture sonar have led to imaging sonar with centimeter resolution. However, practical limitations and old systems limit the resolution in modern and legacy datasets. This study proposes using single image super resolution based on a conditioned diffusion model to map between images at different resolutions. This approach focuses on upscaling legacy, low-resolution sonar datasets to enable backward compatibility with newer, high-resolution datasets, thus creating a unified dataset for machine learning applications. The study demonstrates improved performance for classifying upscaled images without increasing the probability of false detection. The increased probability of detection was 7% compared to bicubic interpolation, 6% compared to convolutional neural networks, and 2% compared to generative adversarial networks. Generative adversarial neural networks with a variational autoencoder (VAE-GANs) are actively used in the field of materials design. The synthesis of random structures with nonrepeated geometry and predetermined mechanical properties is important for solving various practical problems. Geometric parameters of such artificially generated random structures can vary within certain limits compared to the training dataset, causing unpredicted fluctuations in their resulting mechanical response. This study investigates the statistical variability of mechanical and morphological characteristics of random 3D models reconstructed from 2D images using a VAE-GAN neural network. A combined multitool method employing different mathematical and statistical instruments for comparison of the reconstructed models with their corresponding originals is proposed. It includes the analysis of statistical distributions of elastic properties, morphometric parameters, and stress values. The neural network was trained on two datasets, containing models created based on Gaussian random fields. Statistical fluctuations of the mechanical and morphological parameters of the reconstructed models are analyzed. The deviation of the effective elastic modulus of the reconstructed models from that of the original ones was less than 5.7% on average. The difference between the median values of ligament thickness and distance between ligaments ranged from 3.6 to 6.5% and 2.6 to 5.2%, respectively. The median value of the surface area of the reconstructed geometries was 4.6–8.1% higher compared to the original models. It is thus shown that mechanical properties of the NN-generated structures retain the statistical variability of the corresponding originals, while the variability of the morphology is highly affected by the training set and does not depend on the configuration of the input 2D image. The identification of mineral deposit footprints by processing geochemical survey data constitutes a crucial stage in mineral exploration because it provides valuable and substantial information for future prospecting endeavors. However, the selection of appropriate pathfinder elements and the recognition of their anomalous patterns for determining metallogenic favorability based on geochemical survey data remain challenging tasks because of the complex interactions among different geochemical elements and the highly nonlinear and heterogeneous characteristics of their spatial distribution patterns. This study investigated the application of a causal discovery algorithm and deep learning models to identify geochemical anomaly patterns associated with mineralization. Using gold-polymetallic deposits in the Edongnan region of China as a case study, stream sediment samples containing concentrations of 39 elements were collected and preprocessed using a centered log-ratio transformation, addressing the closure effect of compositional data. The combination of the synthetic minority oversampling technique, Tomek link algorithm, and causal discovery algorithm to explore the potential associations and influences among geochemical elements provides new insights into the selection of pathfinder elements. Regarding the problem of identifying anomalous spatial distribution patterns in pathfinder elements and considering that the formation of mineral deposits is the result of various geological processes interacting under specific spatiotemporal conditions, we proposed a hybrid deep learning model called VAE-CAPSNET-GAN, which combines a variational autoencoder (VAE), capsule network (CAPSNET), and generative adversarial network (GAN). The model was designed to capture the spatial distribution characteristics of pathfinder elements and the spatial coupling relationships between mineral deposits and geochemical anomalies, enabling the recognition of geochemical anomaly patterns related to mineralization. The results showed that, compared to the VAE model, which also uses reconstruction error as the anomaly detection principle, VAE-CAPSNET-GAN exhibited superior performance in identifying known mineral deposits and delineating anomalous areas aligned more closely with the established metallogenic model. Furthermore, this weakens the impact of overlapping information. Multiple outcomes indicated that an integrated analytical framework combining a causal discovery algorithm with deep learning models can provide valuable clues for further delineating prospects. Accurate synthetic image generation is crucial for addressing data scarcity challenges in medical image classification tasks, particularly in sensor-derived medical imaging. In this work, we propose a novel method using a Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network with Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP) and nearest-neighbor interpolation to generate high-quality synthetic images for diabetic retinopathy classification. Our approach enhances training datasets by generating realistic retinal images that retain critical pathological features. We evaluated the method across multiple retinal image datasets, including Retinal-Lesions, Fine-Grained Annotated Diabetic Retinopathy (FGADR), Indian Diabetic Retinopathy Image Dataset (IDRiD), and the Kaggle Diabetic Retinopathy dataset. The proposed method outperformed traditional generative models, such as conditional GANs and PathoGAN, achieving the best performance on key metrics: a Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) of 15.21, a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.002025, and a Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) of 0.89 in the Kaggle dataset. Additionally, expert evaluations revealed that only 56.66% of synthetic images could be distinguished from real ones, demonstrating the high fidelity and clinical relevance of the generated data. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized medicine over the past several years. A generative adversarial network (GAN) is a deep learning framework that has become a powerful technique in medicine, particularly in ophthalmology for image analysis. In this paper we review the current ophthalmic literature involving GANs, and highlight key contributions in the field. We briefly touch on ChatGPT, another application of generative AI, and its potential in ophthalmology. We also explore the potential uses for GANs in ocular imaging, with a specific emphasis on 3 primary domains: image enhancement, disease identification, and generating of synthetic data. PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Google Scholar were searched from inception to October 30, 2022, to identify applications of GAN in ophthalmology. A total of 40 papers were included in this review. We cover various applications of GANs in ophthalmic-related imaging including optical coherence tomography, orbital magnetic resonance imaging, fundus photography, and ultrasound; however, we also highlight several challenges that resulted in the generation of inaccurate and atypical results during certain iterations. With the development and application of machine learning, significant advances have been made in landslide susceptibility mapping. However, due to challenges in actual field landslide investigations, current landslide susceptibility mapping is usually characterized by insufficient landslide samples (positive samples) and low reliability of non-landslide samples (negative samples). Considering Lianghe County in Yunnan Province, China, as an example, this paper aims to research the effectiveness of three oversampling models in generating positive samples for landslides: Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Networks (CTGAN), Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), and the traditional Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithms. Additionally, three machine learning methods, including 1D Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network (CNN-LSTM), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) classifiers, are used for landslide susceptibility assessment. We also devise a non-landslide data (negative samples) screening method utilizing a self-trained support vector machine within a semi-supervised framework. The results show that by training on the dataset after negative sample screening, the AUC values for the 1D-CNN-LSTM, RF, and GBDT models have shown significant improvement, increasing from (0.778, 0.869, 0.849) to (0.837, 0.936, 0.877). Compared with the original training set, the prediction accuracy of the three machine learning models is improved after training on the augmented data by CTGAN, GAN, and SMOTE models. The RF model, augmented with 200 positive samples generated by CTGAN, achieves the highest prediction accuracy in the study (AUC = 0.962). The 1D CNN-LSTM model achieves its highest prediction accuracy (AUC = 0.953) when augmented with 200 positive samples from GAN. Similarly, the GBDT model reaches its highest prediction accuracy (AUC = 0.928) when augmented with 200 positive samples created by SMOTE. In addition, the spatial distribution of data indicates that the data generated by the generative adversarial model exhibits higher diversity, which can be used for landslide susceptibility assessment. The life of the human beings are considered as the most precious and the average life time has reduced from 75 to 50 age over the past two decades. This reduction of average life time is due to various health hazards namely cancer and many more. The brain tumor ranks among the top ten most common source of demise. Although brain tumors are not the leading cause of death globally, 40% of other cancers (such as breast or lung cancers) metastasize to the brain and become brain tumors. Despite being the gold norm for tumor diagnosis, a biopsy has a number of drawbacks, including inferior sensitivity/specificity, and menace when performing the biopsy, and lengthy wait times for the results. This work employs artificial intelligence integrated with the honey bee optimization (HBO) in detecting the brain tumor with high level of execution in terms of accuracy, recall, precision, F1 score and Jaccard index when compared to the deep learning algorithms of long short term memory networks (LSTM), convolutional neural networks, generative adversarial networks, recurrent neural networks, and deep belief networks. Researchers have recently created several deep learning strategies for various tasks, and facial recognition has made remarkable progress in employing these techniques. Face recognition is a noncontact, nonobligatory, acceptable, and harmonious biometric recognition method with a promising national and social security future. The purpose of this paper is to improve the existing face recognition algorithm, investigate extensive data-driven face recognition methods, and propose a unique automated face recognition methodology based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) and the center symmetric multivariable local binary pattern (CS-MLBP). To begin, this paper employs the center symmetric multivariant local binary pattern (CS-MLBP) algorithm to extract the texture features of the face, addressing the issue that C2DPCA (column-based two-dimensional principle component analysis) does an excellent job of removing the global characteristics of the face but struggles to process the local features of the face under large samples. The extracted texture features are combined with the international features retrieved using C2DPCA to generate a multifeatured face. The proposed method, GAN-CS-MLBP, syndicates the power of GAN with the robustness of CS-MLBP, resulting in an accurate and efficient face recognition system. Deep learning algorithms, mainly neural networks, automatically extract discriminative properties from facial images. The learned features capture low-level information and high-level meanings, permitting the model to distinguish among dissimilar persons more successfully. To assess the proposed technique's GAN-CS-MLBP performance, extensive experiments are performed on benchmark face recognition datasets such as LFW, YTF, and CASIA-WebFace. Giving to the findings, our method exceeds state-of-the-art facial recognition systems in terms of recognition accuracy and resilience.
