A test particle code is employed to explore the dynamics of charged particles and perpendicular diffusion in turbulent magnetic field, where a three-dimensional (3D) isotropic turbulence model is used in this paper. The obtained perpendicular diffusion at different particle energies is compared with that of the nonlinear guiding center (NLGC) theory. It is found that the NLGC theory is consistent with test particle simulations when the particle energies are small. However, the difference between the NLGC theory and test particle simulations tends to increase when the particle energy is sufficiently large, and the threshold is related to the turbulence bend-over length. In the NLGC theory, the gyrocenter of a charged particle is assumed to follow the magnetic field line. Therefore, when the particle has sufficiently large energy, its gyroradius will be larger than the turbulence bend-over length. Then the particle can cross the magnetic field lines, and the difference between the test particle simulations and NLGC theory occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, by performing a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we investigate magnetic reconnection in the downstream of a quasi-perpendicular shock. The shock is nonstationary, and experiences cyclic reformation. At the beginning of the reformation process, the shock front is relatively flat, and part of the upstream ions are reflected by the shock front. The reflected ions move upward in the action of the Lorentz force, which leads to the upward bending of the magnetic field lines at the foot of the shock front, and then a current sheet is formed due to the squeezing of the bending magnetic field lines. The formed current sheet is brought toward the shock front by the solar wind, and the shock front becomes irregular after interacting with the current sheet. Both the current sheet carried by the solar wind and the current sheet associated with the shock front are then fragmented into many small filamentary current sheets. Electron-scale magnetic reconnection may occur in several of these filamentary current sheets when they are convected into the downstream, and magnetic islands are generated. A strong reconnection electric field and energy dissipation are also generated around the X line, and a high-speed electron outflow is also formed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During magnetic reconnection, such as in the magnetopause of magnetized planets, the upstream plasma conditions between the two inflow regions are usually different. In this paper, we demonstrate that such a kind of asymmetric reconnection can be studied in the laboratory using the recently proposed experimental scheme where reconnection is driven by laser-powered capacitor coils. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations on the plane in a cylindrical coordinate are conducted to study magnetic reconnection with the inflow along the direction. Magnetic reconnection is found to be asymmetric with a stronger magnetic field in the inner (small) inflow region and a weaker magnetic field in the outer (large) inflow region due to the cylindrical symmetric geometry. Electron crescent velocity distributions are observed near the flow stagnation point while ion crescent velocity distributions are observed in the region with Larmor electric field. The out-of-plane Hall magnetic field is asymmetric between the two inflow regions with a larger spatial scale in the outer inflow region. This asymmetric Hall magnetic field configuration is different from that in previous studies. The typical reconnection rate increases with a stronger driver and the highest rate is around 0.2 , where is the typical value of the magnetic field and is the Alfven speed. This study provides a new method to experimentally study asymmetric reconnection in the laboratory and has potential applications regarding magnetic reconnection in the magnetopause of magnetized planets. By comparing an electron‐only reconnection event with a traditional reconnection event observed in the magnetotail, we illustrate the differences between and similarities of the two events. The electron behaviors are very similar in both events, but intensities of the electron flows and temperature in the traditional reconnection are much stronger than those in the electron‐only reconnection. The Hall electric field in the traditional reconnection occurs on the ion‐scale and is deflected from the normal direction by the significant magnetic field reconnected, while this field varies on the electron‐scale and points to the middle plane in the electron‐only reconnection. The comparison indicates that the electrons are undergoing the same process in both events, and the electron‐only reconnection was prior to the traditional reconnection. The Hall electric field could control the form of reconnection: producing either electron‐only reconnection or traditional reconnection. Reconnection electric field is a key element of magnetic reconnection. It quantifies the change of magnetic topology and the dissipation of magnetic energy. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed to study the growth of the reconnection electric field in the electron diffusion region (EDR) during magnetic reconnection with a guide field. At first, a seed electric field is produced due to the excitation of the tearing-mode instability. Then, the reconnection electric field in the EDR, which is dominated by the electron pressure tensor term, suffers a spontaneous growth stage and grows exponentially until it saturates. A theoretical model is also proposed to explain such a kind of growth. The reconnection electric field in the EDR is found to be directly proportional to the electron outflow speed. The time derivative of electron outflow speed is proportional to the reconnection electric field in the EDR because the outflow is formed after the inflow electrons are accelerated by the reconnection electric field in the EDR and then directed away along the outflow direction. Whistler mode chorus waves are coherent electromagnetic emissions in planetary magnetospheres, characterized by rising‐tone or falling‐tone chirping elements. Understanding the cause of different chirping directions and their properties is an important step in resolving the long‐standing problem of nonlinear chorus generation. We report here, for the first time, particle‐in‐cell simulations of bidirectional chirping of whistler waves in a uniform magnetic field and falling‐tone‐only chirping in an inhomogeneous field. Combined with previous simulations of rising‐tone‐only emissions, we demonstrate that the background magnetic field inhomogeneity is not required for chirping of chorus, but it plays a key role in determining the chirping direction. The findings of the present work also unveil the critical role of the dipole geometry of Earth's magnetic field in causing the statistical predominance of rising‐tone chorus and the oblique propagation of falling‐tone chorus. This important wave is known to produce relativistic electrons in the hazardous radiation belts and to precipitate energetic electrons from space into the upper atmosphere to form diffuse aurora. Chorus consists of discrete spectral elements with fast frequency chirping in either upward (rising‐tone) or downward (falling‐tone) directions. A long‐standing problem is to understand the origin of different chirping directions and their distinctive observational properties. Here, we show, by first‐principle particle simulations, that the background magnetic field inhomogeneity plays a key role in determining the chirping direction and that the dipole geometry of Earth's magnetic field essentially controls the properties of chorus. Our results naturally account for the dominance of rising‐tone chorus and the oblique propagation of falling‐tone chorus and provide important insights into the fundamental mechanism of the nonlinear chirping process. The propagation properties of chorus are also expected to be similar in all planetary magnetospheres with a dipole‐type magnetic field. Near equatorial (fast) magnetosonic waves, characterized by high magnetic compressibility, are whistler‐mode emissions destabilized by proton shell/ring distributions. In the past, substorm proton injections are widely known to intensify magnetosonic waves in the inner magnetosphere. Here we report the unexpected observations by the Van Allen Probes of the magnetosonic wave quenching associated with the substorm proton injections under both high‐ and low‐density conditions. The enhanced proton thermal pressure distorted the background magnetic field configuration and the cold plasma density distribution. The reduced phase velocities locally allowed the weak growth or even damping of magnetosonic waves. Meanwhile, the spatially irregularly varying refractive indices might suppress the cumulative growth of magnetosonic waves. For intense injections, this wave quenching region could extend over 2 hr in magnetic local time and 0.5 Earth radii in radial distance. These results provide a new understanding of the generation and distribution of magnetosonic waves. The primary power gap of chorus waves is statistically investigated using 7‐year waveform data from THEMIS probes for the first time. Overall, ~2/3 of chorus events have a power gap between the lower and upper bands. Both the gap frequency and the frequency bandwidth of the gap have a broad distribution, which peaks at frequencies of ~0.49fce and ~0.07fce, respectively. The gap frequency tends to increase with increasing |MLAT| (magnetic latitude), while the frequency width gradually increases with L‐shell. In most of banded events, the peak frequency of upper band is roughly twice that of lower band. Two types of events are studied. For Type I events, one population is located around Pup/Plow = 10−1, and the other is around Pup/Plow = 10−3. However, Type II events are roughly concentrated around Pup/Plow = 10−3. The gap frequency positively correlates with the frequency of upper band. Our study provides detailed observational constraints on potential mechanisms of the power gap formation. Abstract: The excitation of magnetosonic waves in the meridian plane of a rescaled dipole magnetic field is investigated, for the first time, using a general curvilinear particle‐in‐cell simulation. Our simulation demonstrates that the magnetosonic waves are excited near the equatorial plane by tenuous ring distribution protons. The waves propagate nearly perpendicularly to the background magnetic field along both radially inward and outward directions. Different speeds of inward and outward propagation result in the asymmetrical distribution about the source region. The waves are accompanied by energization of both cool protons and electrons near the wave source region. The cool protons are heated perpendicularly, while the cool electrons can be heated in the parallel direction and also experience enhanced perpendicular drift at the presence of intense wave power. The implications of simulation results to the observations of magnetosonic waves and related particle heating in the inner magnetosphere are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, with a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation model, we study the formation of power-law spectra of energetic electrons in multiple X line magnetic reconnection with a strong guide field. The processes of both magnetic reconnection and electron acceleration can be separated into two stages. In the first stage, two X lines appear at the border and center of the simulation domain, and then, two magnetic islands are formed. In this stage, electrons are accelerated mainly by parallel electric fields, and a power-law spectrum of energetic electrons is generated with the appearance of the second X line. In the second stage, the two magnetic islands are merged into one big island. Besides parallel electric fields, the Fermi mechanism also plays an important role in the production of energetic electrons, and its contribution is comparable to that of parallel electric fields when the electron energy is sufficiently large. In this stage, the generated power-law spectrum of energetic electrons becomes hard. In general, the acceleration efficiencies by both the parallel electric fields and Fermi mechanism become higher with the increase in electron energy, and the tendency is more obvious for the Fermi mechanism. Therefore, both the parallel electric fields and Fermi mechanism are important in the formation of power-law spectra of energetic electrons during multiple X line reconnection. In this paper, by taking advantage of a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation model, we study the structure of the out-of-plane magnetic field (Hall magnetic field) during asymmetric magnetic reconnection without a guide field, and the associated in-plane current system is also analyzed. The evolution of asymmetric reconnection has two stages. At the first stage, the electrons move toward the X line along the separatrix in the magnetosheath side, and depart from the X line along the separatrix in the magnetosphere side. Another electron flow toward the X line exists above the separatrix in the magnetosphere side. The resulted in-plane current system, which is mainly determined by electron dynamics, generates the quadrupolar structure of the Hall magnetic field, where the two quadrants in the magnetosheath side are much stronger than those in the magnetosphere side. At the second stage, besides these electron flows, an additional electron flow away from the X line is formed along the magnetic field below the separatrix in the magnetosheath side. We establish a catalog of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) during the period from 1995 to 2015 using the in-situ observations from the Wind and ACE spacecraft. Based on this catalog, we extend the statistical properties of ICMEs to the maximum phase of Solar Cycle 24. We confirm previous results that the yearly occurrence frequencies of ICMEs and shocks, the ratios of ICMEs driving shocks are correlated with the sunspot numbers. For the magnetic cloud (MC), we confirm that the yearly occurrence frequencies of MCs do not show any correlation with sunspot numbers. The highest MC ratio of ICME occurred near the solar minimum. In addition, we analyzed the yearly variation of the ICME parameters. We found that the ICME velocities, the magnetic-field strength, and their related parameters are varied in pace with solar-cycle variation. At the solar maximum, ICMEs move faster and carry a stronger magnetic field. By comparing the parameters between MCs and non-MC ejecta, we confirm the result that the magnetic-field intensities of MC are higher than those in non-MC ejecta. Furthermore, we also discuss the forward shocks driven by ICMEs. We find that one half of the ICMEs have upstream shocks and ICMEs with shocks have faster speed and higher magnetic-field strength than the ICMEs without shocks. The magnetic-field parameters and solar-wind plasma parameters in the shock sheath regions are higher than those in the ejecta regions of ICMEs from a statistical point of view. With the measurements of magnetic field of Venus Express (VEX), magnetic coplanarity and minimum variance analysis (MVA) methods are analyzed and their validity is tested to determine the normal of Venusian bow shocks. It is found that MVA method is the better than magnetic coplanarity, and 95% shock crossings can be accurately determined by the method. However, the occurrence of the shock normal which is not determined accurately by magnetic coplanarity increases with the decrease of the solar zenith angle (SZA). At the same time, compared with quasi-parallel shocks, there is more occurrence of the shock normal which cannot be determined accurately by magnetic coplanarity for quasi-perpendicular shocks. It is well known that the parallel cuts of the parallel and perpendicular electric field in electron phase-space holes (electron holes) have bipolar and unipolar structures, respectively. Recently, electron holes in the Earth's plasma sheet have been observed by THEMIS satellites to have detectable fluctuating magnetic field with regular structures. Du et al. () investigated the evolution of a one-dimensional (1D) electron hole with two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations in weakly magnetized plasma (Ω< ω, where Ω and ω are the electron gyrofrequency and electron plasma frequency, respectively), which initially exists in the simulation domain. The electron hole is unstable to the transverse instability and broken into several 2D electron holes. They successfully explained the observations by THEMIS satellites based on the generated magnetic structures associated with these 2D electron holes. In this paper, 2D electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed in the x- y plane to investigate the nonlinear evolution of the electron two-stream instability in weakly magnetized plasma, where the background magnetic field $(\mathbf{B}_{0} =B_{0}\vec{\mathbf{e}} _{x})$ is along the x direction. Several 2D electron holes are formed during the nonlinear evolution, where the parallel cuts of E and E have bipolar and unipolar structures, respectively. Consistent with the results of Du et al. (), we found that the current along the z direction is generated by the electric field drift motion of the trapped electrons in the electron holes due to the existence of E, which produces the fluctuating magnetic field δB and δB in the electron holes. In this paper, ten CME events viewed by the STEREO twin spacecraft are analyzed to study the deflections of CMEs during their propagation in the corona. Based on the three-dimensional information of the CMEs derived by the graduated cylindrical shell (GCS) model (Thernisien, Howard, and Vourlidas in Astrophys. J. 652, 1305, ), it is found that the propagation directions of eight CMEs had changed. By applying the theoretical method proposed by Shen et al. ( Solar Phys. 269, 389, ) to all the CMEs, we found that the deflections are consistent, in strength and direction, with the gradient of the magnetic energy density. There is a positive correlation between the deflection rate and the strength of the magnetic energy density gradient and a weak anti-correlation between the deflection rate and the CME speed. Our results suggest that the deflections of CMEs are mainly controlled by the background magnetic field and can be quantitatively described by the magnetic energy density gradient (MEDG) model. Two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell simulations are performed to investigate the structures of the out-of-plane magnetic field in magnetic island, which is produced during anti-parallel collisionless magnetic reconnection. Regular structures with alternate positive and negative values of the out-of-plane magnetic field along the x direction are formed in magnetic island. Electron phase space holes (electron holes) are found to be unstable to the transverse instability. Two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations are performed to investigate the structures of the fluctuating magnetic field associated with electron holes. The combined actions between the transverse instability and the stabilization by the background magnetic field (B0=B0evector x) lead a one-dimensional electron hole into several 2D electron holes which are isolated in both the x and y directions. The electrons trapped in these 2D electron holes suffer the electric field drift vE=E×B0/B02 due to the existence of the perpendicular electric field Ey, which generates the current along the z direction. Then, the unipolar and bipolar structures are formed for the parallel cut of the fluctuating magnetic field along the x and y directions, respectively. At the same time, these 2D electron holes move along the x direction, and the unipolar structures are formed for the parallel cut of the fluctuating magnetic field along the z direction. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are performed to investigate the formation of electron density depletions in collisionless magnetic reconnection. In anti-parallel reconnection, the quadrupole structures of the out-of-plane magnetic field are formed, and four symmetric electron density depletion layers can be found along the separatrices due to the effects of magetic mirror. With the increase of the initial guide field, the symmetry of both the out-of-plane magnetic field and electron density depletion layers is distorted. When the initial guide field is sufficiently large, the electron density depletion layers along the lower left and upper right separatrices disappear. The parallel electric field in guide field reconnection is found to play an important role in forming such structures of the electron density depletion layers. The structures of the out-of-plane magnetic field By and electron depletion layers in anti-parallel and guide field reconnection are found to be related to electron flow or in-plane currents in the separatrix regions. In anti-parallel reconnection, electrons flow towards the X line along the separatrices, and are directed away from the X line along the magnetic field lines just inside the separatrices. In guide field reconnection, electrons can only flow towards the X line along the upper left and lower right separatrices due to the existence of the parallel electric field in these regions. In collisionless reconnection, the magnetic field near the separatrix is stronger than that around the X-line, so an electron-beam can be formed and flows toward the X-line, which leads to a decrease of the electron density near the separatrix. Having been accelerated around the X-line, the electrons flow out along the magnetic field lines in the inner side of the separatrix. A quadruple structure of the Hall magnetic field By is formed by such a current system. A 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code is used in this paper to study the collisionless magnetic reconnection without an initial guide field. The current system described above is proved by the simulations. As observation have shown, magnetic islands often appear before and/or after the onset of magnetic reconnections in the current sheets, and they also appear in the current sheets in the solar corona, Earth's magnetotail, and Earth's magnetopause. Thus, the existence of magnetic islands can affect the initial conditions in magnetic reconnection. In this paper, we propose a model of quasi-static magnetic island eigenmodes in the current sheet. This model analytically describes the magnetic field structures in the quasi-static case, which will provide a possible approach to reconstructing the magnetic structures in the current sheet via observation data. Two-dimensional hybrid simulations are performed to investigate the parametric decay of a monochromatic Alfven wave in low beta plasma. Both the linearly and left-hand polarized pump Alfven waves are considered in the paper. For the linearly polarized pump Alfven wave, either a parallel or obliquely propagating wave can lead to the decay along the perpendicular direction. Initially, the parametric decay takes place along the propagating direction of the pump wave, and then the decay occurs in the perpendicular direction. With the increase of the amplitude and the propagating angle of the pump wave (the angle between the propagating direction of the pump wave and the ambient magnetic field), the spectral range of the excited waves becomes broad in the perpendicular direction. But the effects of the plasma beta on the spectral range of the excited waves in perpendicular direction are negligible. However, for the left-hand polarized pump Alfven wave, when the pump wave propagates along the ambient magnetic field, the parametric decay occurs nearly along the ambient magnetic field, and there is no obvious decay in the perpendicular direction.
