Background/aim: The variations and anomalies of the kidneys besides the variations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and left renal vein (LRV) are mostly asymptomatic, but they carry potential risks particularly during retroperitoneal surgery and radiological interventions. Our aim was to find the frequencies, types, and sex distribution of renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: Between November 2010 and April 2011, a retrospective study was conducted including lumbar spinal MRI of 3000 consecutive patients (1869 females and 1131 males) with a median age of 54 years (range: 9-78 years). Results: The percentages of renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV were 0.9%, 0.07%, and 2.6%, respectively. Sex did not affect the distribution of renal anomalies (P = 0.2), IVC variations (P = 0.72), or LRV variations (P = 0.26).Conclusion: Lumbar spinal MRI is useful in detecting renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV.

Objective and Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the acromio-humeral, coraco-humeral, and coraco-clavicular distances with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of shoulder impingement syndrome., Subjects and Methods: All the acromio-humeral, coraco-humeral, and coraco-clavicular intervals of all patients were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 132 shoulders (76 right and 56 left shoulders) with impingement syndrome (40 males and 92 females, with 79 cases surgically confirmed and the remaining 53 cases clinically and radiologically suspected) and 40 control group patients were included. Statistical correlation of this research was assessed by Fisher's Exact t test and Pearson chi-square test-correlation coefficients., Results: In the correlation of average acromio-humeral, coraco-humeral, and coraco-clavicular intervals (AHI, CHI, and CCI, respectively), there were significant statistical differences between patient and control groups; all the intervals were found to be higher in the control group. A moderate positive relation between average AHI and CHI, between AHI and CCI, and between CCI and CHI has been found. All intervals in the patient group increase or decrease dependently on each other. No proper cut-off values were determined using a receiver operating characteristic curve for all intervals between patient and control groups., Conclusion: Acromio-humeral, coraco-humeral, and coraco-clavicular intervals were extremely lower in the shoulder impingement syndrome and had significant importance in the diagnosis of subacromial and subcoracoid impingements., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: The aim of this study was to optimize and predict the most efficient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences; T1-weighted (T1W), T2-weighted (T2W), dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) T1W, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping sequences and proton MR spectroscopy (H-MRS) for the detection of prostate cancer., Materials and Methods: After institutional review board approval and informed consent taken from all the patients, 40 patients with prostate cancer were included in this research. Two readers independently evaluated the results of T1W, T2W, DCE T1W, and DWI-ADC mapping sequences and proton H-MRS for the depiction of prostate cancer. Reference standard was the transrectal ultrasonography-guided biopsy and the surgical histopathological results. Statistical analysis was assessed by the Fisher exact t test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, variance analysis test with kappa (κ) values and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve for ADC values, choline (Cho)/citrate (Cit) and Cho+creatine (Cre)/Cit ratios for each observer., Results: Based on both readers' results, sensitivity declined to 31% and specificity to 75% for the T1W sequence, sensitivity declined to 43% and specificity to 67% for the DCE T1W sequence, sensitivity declined to 46% and specificity to 68% for the T2W sequence, sensitivity declined to 29% and specificity to 82% for the DWI-ADC mapping; and specificity was 49% for the Cho/Cit and Cho+Cre/Cit ratios, sensitivity was 69% for the Cho/Cit ratio, and sensitivity was 70% for the Cho+Cre/Cit ratio for H-MRS. The T2W sequence and H-MRS presented significant statistical differences for the depiction of prostatic cancer (P < 0.05), the most efficient sequence to detect prostatic cancer was H-MRS: Cho+Cre/Cit and Cho/Cit ratios., Conclusion: Instead of using either sequences alone owing to low sensitivity and specificity rates, combined use of MRI techniques could easily improve the detection and staging of prostate cancer.

Purpose: To assess the most effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence for the visualization of the 9th, 10th, and 11th cranial nerves (glossopharyngeal, vagus, and accessory nerves, respectively) in their intraforaminal/canalicular courses., Materials and Methods: Balanced fast-field echo (b-FFE), 3D-T2W DRIVE, T2W 2D TSE and post-contrast T1W MRI sequences were all applied and we tried to get the best sequence for the exact assessment of the 9th, 10th, and 11th cranial nerves. Six hundred nerves of 100 patients without symptoms of neurovascular compression were examined using the above sequences. Imaging analysis was graded as: a) nerves analyzed by certainty (score of 2), b) nerves analyzed partially (score of 1), and c) nerves not identified (score of 0)., Results: In all three nerves, the best sequence for the visualization of the cisternal and intraforaminal course was b-FFE, with 58%, 73%, 62%, and all together 64.3% success in showing the fascicles of the 9th-11th nerves. This sequence with a very short time of repetition, symmetrical and balanced gradient around the echo time allowed very fast imaging and a high signal to noise ratio. T2W TSE sequence was superior to the DRIVE T2W sequence in assessing the cisternal and intraforaminal part of all three nerves. Post-contrast T1W sequence was probably the worst sequence in showing all three nerves., Conclusion: b-FFE gradient echo MRI sequence with high spatial resolution is the optimal sequence for determining the courses of 9th-11th cranial nerves.

Study Design: Patients with Lenke type 1 single thoracic idiopathic scoliosis were included in this prospective study. All patients had preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Objective: To examine the frequency of neural axis abnormalities and the need for preoperative MRI in this group of patients., Summary of Background Data: Because of the increasing use of MRI, neural axis abnormalities have been reported in association with certain clinical and radiologic findings in idiopathic scoliosis cases., Methods: A total of 104 patients (49 juvenile onset and 55 adolescent onset), older than 10 years, were included in the study. The association of neural axis abnormalities with pes cavus, abnormal deep tendon reflexes, age of onset, presence of pain, severity of the frontal plane deformity, and sagittal contours were investigated., Results: All 7 patients with a neural axis abnormality on MRI had an early onset disease, and 6 of them had back pain. Thus, age of onset and back pain seem to be predictive of these abnormalities. Frequency of MRI abnormalities was as high as 45% for patients with back pain in addition to a type IC curve., Conclusion: In patients with juvenile idiopathic scoliosis and back pain, preoperative MRI should be performed to eliminate the risk of postoperative neurologic deficits, even if the scoliosis is Lenke type 1. However, in patients with Lenke type 1 idiopathic scoliosis, preoperative MRI studies seem unnecessary if intraoperative neural monitoring is to be performed.

Objectives: We compared the preoperative findings of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with those observed during surgery to determine their value for cochlear implant patients., Patients and Methods: A retrospective assessment was made on preoperative HRCT and MRI scans of 124 cochlear implant patients (71 males, 53 females; mean age 15 years; range 2 to 63 years). Congenital cochlear anomalies, cochlear ossification, new bone formation in the middle ear, and structures in the internal auditory canal were evaluated and compared with intraoperative findings., Results: Cochlear anomalies detected in five patients by HRCT and MRI were confirmed intraoperatively. Cochlear ossification encountered in six patients during surgery was only demonstrated in four patients; HRCT and MRI scans only showed a narrow basal turn in the remaining two patients. During surgery, eight patients were found to have cochlear fibrosis: this finding was documented in five patients (62.5%) by MRI, and in none by HRCT scans., Conclusion: Although HRCT provides valuable information for surgical planning, its limitations may justify the additional use of MRI before cochlear implantation.

Lead is toxic to many organ systems, among them bone marrow, muscles, kidneys, endocrine glands, joints, and nervous system. Encephalopathy is a rare but severe complication of lead poisoning. Lead toxicity is much less common in adults. Adult lead poisoning results primarily from exposure by inhalation in the workplace. In this report, two cases of adult toxic encephalopathy due to lead poisoning are presented with CT and MR findings.

Gall bladder (GB) may be found in a variety of abnormal positions. Most of them are due to arrested development of embryonic growth at different stages.A 63-year-old female patientwas admitted to our radiology unit for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver for the lesions identified in abdominal ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). MRI showed that there was a lobulated heterogenous mass in the left lobe of the liver and a smaller one in the right lobe of the liver with the same appearance. The inferior pole of the liver was located in the pelvic space, and the GB, which contained sludges and stones, was lying down to the upper pelvic space. Hepatic masses were considered to be hemangiomas, and GB was diagnosed as ptotic GB with luminal sludge and stones. In this case, especially, MR imaging helped the surgeon to plan a proper approach to the GB in abnormal localization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this report, we describe fast contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance venography (CE-MRV) findings in orbital varix. Although 2D-TOF MR angiography may allow the demonstration of low flow in venous vascular structures, orbital varices may not be detected as they contain stagnant blood and appear as soft tissue masses. The CE-MRV is faster, which allow to the Valsalva maneuver and can demonstrate stagnant blood with contrast enhancement. To the best of our knowledge, findings of CE-MRV in orbital varix has not been previously reported. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Purpose: Performance of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in the diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules. Method: In a retrospective study with malignant nodules of 14 patients, H-MRS and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) were performed. Choline (Cho) peak, Cho/creatine (Cr) ratio, and ADC values of malignant nodules were correlated with the five benign nodules and four normal-appearing thyroid lobe parenchymata. The gold standard reference was fine needle aspiration biopsy and histopathology. Results: At echo time 40–144-ms acquisitions, average Cho/Cr ratio for the malignant nodules was 2.95±1.54–5.30±2.38, cutoff values were >0.805 and >1.225, and ADC values were 0.06±0.02. Conclusion: H-MRS acquisitions, DWI, and ADC mapping give diagnostic data about the nature of the nodules. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
