Background: The relationship between subregion atrophy in the entire temporal lobe and subcortical nuclei and cognitive decline at various stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is unclear., Methods: We selected 711 participants from the AD Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, which included 195 cases of cognitively normal (CN), 271 cases of early Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (EMCI), 132 cases of late MCI (LMCI), and 113 cases of AD. we looked at how subregion atrophy in the temporal lobe and subcortical nuclei correlated with cognition at different stages of AD. The volume of the subregions was measured from the human Brainnetome atlas (BNA-246) using voxel-based morphometry and discriminant and correlation analyses were performed., Results: Only the left premotor thalamus demonstrated significant shrinkage in individuals with EMCI ( p = 0.012). Discriminant analysis revealed that the left rostral Brodmann area 20 has the highest discriminatory ability among all temporal subregions to distinguish patients with AD from CN. While the left caudal hippocampus can efficiently distinguish patients with LMCI from EMCI. While the right rostral Brodmann area 20 was the most effective in distinguishing AD from LMCI. Correlation analysis revealed that the left nucleus accumbens, left caudal area 35/36, and left sensory thalamus had a mild correlation with cognitive scores measured using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive (ADAS-cog) 13 and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores., Conclusions: Our findings show that the right rostral area 20 in the inferior temporal gyrus plays a significant role in cognitive impairment in AD., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objective: To investigate gray matter volume (GMV) changes in patients with comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) of differing severity and relationships between GMV alterations and clinical measures., Methods: Thirty-four COMISA patients and 24 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. All patients underwent structural MRI and completed measures related to respiration, sleep, mood, and cognition. COMISA patients were further divided into a mild and moderate COMISA (MC) and a severe COMISA (SC) group. Changes in GMV of COMISA patients were investigated via VBM. The voxel-wise differences in GMV were compared between HC group and COMISA group. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed on individual GMV maps in MC, SC, and HC groups to further investigate effects of different stages of COMISA severity on GMV. Partial correlation analysis was then performed to analyze relationships between altered GMV and clinical measures., Results: GMV atrophy was mainly located in the temporal lobes and fusiform gyrus in COMISA group. The post-hoc analysis of the ANCOVA revealed temporal lobes and fusiform gyrus atrophy in MC and SC groups compared to HC and the temporal lobe atrophy was expanded in SC group based on cluster size. Moreover, the SC group showed GMV atrophy of the right amygdala compared to both MC and HC groups. Partial correlation analysis revealed positive relationships between the GMV and mood-and cognitive-related measures and negative correlation between GMV and respiration measure., Conclusions: Our findings showed GMV atrophy expansion from temporal lobe to limbic system (right amygdala) as severity stages increase in COMISA patients. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers an alternative to the traditional Wada test for presurgical language and memory lateralization that carries almost no risk. However, fMRI lateralization of episodic memory remains challenging because the hippocampus, which is fundamental to episodic memory, is smaller, more prone to susceptibility artifact, and harder to functionally modulate than language regions. We previously showed that a complex scene memory task can lateralize memory function in the mesial temporal lobe. Using data acquired from N = 45 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy acquired with an improved stimulus paradigm and high-resolution fMRI, we now demonstrate that memory activation can be successfully lateralized within hippocampus proper. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Epilepsy surgery can improve seizure control in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) that cannot be controlled with medications also, but ablation or removal of temporal lobe brain tissue can also cause cognitive deficits. Functional MRI (fMRI) can noninvasively map brain activation and perform well in lateralizing and localizing language function, but localizing and lateralizing memory function is more challenging. Building upon prior work using complex scene encoding to map memory function, we demonstrate that the use of high-resolution fMRI along with an optimized task paradigm allows memory activation to be detected within the hippocampus. This study aims to reveal the association between sleep quality and crystallized intelligence (Gc), fluid intelligence (Gf), and the underlying brain structural basis. Using the data from the Human Connectome Project (N = 1087), we performed mediation analysis to explore whether regional brain structure related to sleep quality mediate the association between sleep quality and intellectual abilities, and further examined whether socioeconomic status (i.e., income and education level) moderate the mediation effect. Results showed that poorer sleep quality was associated with lower Gc rather than Gf, and worse sleep quality was associated with smaller volume and surface area in temporal lobe, including inferior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus. Notably, temporal lobe structures mediated the association between sleep quality and Gc rather than Gf. Furthermore, socioeconomic status (i.e., income and education level) moderated the mediating effect, showing low socioeconomic status has a more significant mediating effect with stronger association between sleep quality and Gc as well as stronger association between temporal lobe structure and Gc in low socioeconomic status group. Background: In the dynamic realm of modern medicine, the advent of virtual reality technology heralds a transformative era, reshaping the contours of diagnosis and surgical planning with its immersive prowess. This study delves into the groundbreaking application of virtual reality in the intricate dance of neurosurgery, particularly spotlighting its role in the management of astrocytoma grade III-a cerebral challenge of significant complexity., Case Presentation: A 30-year-old Middle Eastern man from Syria grappled with the invisible tendrils of pain, manifesting as persistent headaches and a numbing sensation that crept into his neck and extremities. For two relentless months, the morning sun brought not hope but an intensification of his agony, rendering him unable to partake in the daily dance of life. The usual sentinels of relief, analgesic drugs, stood defeated, offering no respite. The neurological examination was normal, there were no pathological findings on sensory and motor examination, and he exhibited normal reflexes and neither meningeal nor cerebellar signs. He showed a family history of breast cancer. The initial foray into the enigmatic depths of his brain via computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging imaging unveiled a finding in the right temporal lobe, a lesion that suggested something more sinister. Previous medical interventions included analgesic medications prescribed for persistent headaches, but they offered no relief. No other therapeutic interventions were administered prior to the current diagnosis. It was here that virtual reality technology emerged not as a mere tool but as a beacon of precision, casting a three-dimensional light on the shadowy intruder. This technological marvel allowed for meticulous measurement 21.8 × 14.5 mm and localization within the temporal theater, setting the stage for what was to come. With the path laid clear, the patient embarked on a surgical odyssey, a quest to excise the unwelcome guest. The operation was a triumph, a testament to human ingenuity and the symbiotic relationship between flesh and machine. The postoperative verdict was delivered through the lens of histopathology, confirming the presence of an astrocytoma grade III, a cerebral interloper known for its rapid proliferation. The battle, however, was far from over. Complementary radiotherapy and chemotherapy were enlisted as allies in this ongoing war, their potent forces working in concert to stave off the cellular insurgence. Background: Previous research on the changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in anorexia nervosa (AN) has been limited by an insufficient sample size, which reduced the reliability of the results and made it difficult to set the whole brain as regions of interest (ROIs)., Methods: We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 114 female AN patients and 135 healthy controls (HC) and obtained self-reported psychological scales, including eating disorder examination questionnaire 6.0. One hundred sixty-four cortical, subcortical, cerebellar, and network parcellation regions were considered as ROIs. We calculated the ROI-to-ROI rsFCs and performed group comparisons., Results: Compared to HC, AN patients showed 12 stronger rsFCs mainly in regions containing dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and 33 weaker rsFCs primarily in regions containing cerebellum, within temporal lobe, between posterior fusiform cortex and lateral part of visual network, and between anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and thalamus ( p < 0.01, false discovery rate [FDR] correction). Comparisons between AN subtypes showed that there were stronger rsFCs between right lingual gyrus and right supracalcarine cortex and between left temporal occipital fusiform cortex and medial part of visual network in the restricting type compared to the binge/purging type ( p < 0.01, FDR correction)., Conclusion: Stronger rsFCs in regions containing mainly DLPFC, and weaker rsFCs in regions containing primarily cerebellum, within temporal lobe, between posterior fusiform cortex and lateral part of visual network, and between ACC and thalamus, may represent categorical diagnostic markers discriminating AN patients from HC.

Background: The dynamic and hierarchical nature of the functional brain network. The neural dynamical systems tend to converge to multiple attractors (stable fixed points or dynamical states) in long run. Little is known about how the changes in this brain dynamic "long-term" behavior of the connectivity flow of brain network in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)., Methods: This study recruited 92 patients with GAD and 77 healthy controls (HC). We applied a reachable probability approach combining a Non-homogeneous Markov model with transition probability to quantify all possible connectivity flows and the hierarchical structure of brain functional systems at the dynamic level and the stationary probability vector (10-step transition probabilities) to describe the steady state of the system in the long run. A random forest algorithm was conducted to predict the severity of anxiety., Results: The dynamic functional patterns in distributed brain networks had larger possibility to converge in bilateral thalamus, posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right superior occipital gyrus (SOG) and smaller possibility to converge in bilateral superior temporal gyrus (STG) and right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) in patients with GAD compared to HC. The abnormal transition probability pattern could predict anxiety severity in patients with GAD., Limitations: Small samples and subjects taking medications may have influenced our results. Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) refers to the lifelong inability to orient by means of cognitive maps in familiar surroundings despite otherwise well-preserved general cognitive functions, and the absence of any acquired brain injury or neurological condition. While reduced functional connectivity between the hippocampus and other brain regions has been reported in DTD individuals, no structural differences in gray matter tissue for the whole brain neither for the hippocampus were detected. Considering that the human hippocampus is the main structure associated with cognitive map-based navigation, here, we investigated differences in morphological and morphometric hippocampal features between individuals affected by DTD (N = 20) and healthy controls (N = 238). Specifically, we focused on a developmental anomaly of the hippocampus that is characterized by the incomplete infolding of hippocampal subfields during fetal development, giving the hippocampus a more round or pyramidal shape, called incomplete hippocampal inversion (IHI). We rated IHI according to standard criteria and extracted hippocampal subfield volumes after FreeSurfer's automatic segmentation. We observed similar IHI prevalence in the group of individuals with DTD with respect to the control population. Neither differences in whole hippocampal nor major hippocampal subfield volumes have been observed between groups. However, when assessing the IHI independent criteria, we observed that the hippocampus in the DTD group is more medially positioned comparing to the control group. In addition, we observed bigger hippocampal fissure volume for the DTD comparing to the control group. Both of these findings were stronger for the right hippocampus comparing to the left. This study explored how the human brain perceives stickiness through tactile and auditory channels, especially when presented with congruent or incongruent intensity cues. In our behavioral and functional MRI (fMRI) experiments, we presented participants with adhesive tape stimuli at two different intensities. The congruent condition involved providing stickiness stimuli with matching intensity cues in both auditory and tactile channels, whereas the incongruent condition involved cues of different intensities. Behavioral results showed that participants were able to distinguish between the congruent and incongruent conditions with high accuracy. Through fMRI searchlight analysis, we tested which brain regions could distinguish between congruent and incongruent conditions, and as a result, we identified the superior temporal gyrus, known primarily for auditory processing. Interestingly, we did not observe any significant activation in regions associated with somatosensory or motor functions. This indicates that the brain dedicates more attention to auditory cues than to tactile cues, possibly due to the unfamiliarity of conveying the sensation of stickiness through sound. Our results could provide new perspectives on the complexities of multisensory integration, highlighting the subtle yet significant role of auditory processing in understanding tactile properties such as stickiness., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Visual imaging experts play an important role in multiple fields, and studies have shown that the combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging and machine learning techniques can predict cognitive abilities, which provides a possible method for selecting individuals with excellent image interpretation skills. We recorded behavioral data and neural activity of 64 participants during image interpretation tasks under different workloads. Based on the comprehensive image interpretation ability, participants were divided into two groups. general linear model analysis showed that during image interpretation tasks, the high-ability group exhibited higher activation in middle frontal gyrus (MFG), fusiform gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, superior parietal gyrus, inferior parietal gyrus, and insula compared to the low-ability group. The radial basis function Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm shows the most excellent performance in predicting participants' image interpretation abilities (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.54, R2 = 0.31, MSE = 0.039, RMSE = 0.002). Variable importance analysis indicated that the activation features of the fusiform gyrus and MFG played an important role in predicting this ability. Our study revealed the neural basis related to image interpretation ability when exposed to different mental workloads. Social comparison is an important way for individuals to define their social characteristics. Online games with a large amount of social information provide a convenient platform for social comparison between players. However, few studies have examined the neural basis of different social comparisons in game players. This study aims to explore the activation of brain regions triggered by social comparison in different contexts and the possible moderating effect of group identity. A total of 26 subjects participated in our experiment. We referred to the minimum group paradigm to evoke group identity and used the dot estimation paradigm to generate in-group or out-group social comparisons. The activation of brain regions was measured and analyzed. Compared to upward comparison, the fusiform gyrus, putamen, lentiform nucleus, precuneus, and precentral gyrus were significantly activated in downward comparison when the group identity of the comparison object was the same as that of the player. When the two had different identities, downward comparison significantly activated the angular gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and superior frontal gyrus. However, the moderating effect of group identity was not significant. Further functional connectivity analysis based on the brain region activation results was performed. The processing of numerals as visual objects is supported by an "Inferior Temporal Numeral Area" (ITNA) in the bilateral inferior temporal gyri (ITG). Extant findings suggest some degree of hemispheric asymmetry in how the bilateral ITNAs process numerals. Pollack and Price (2019) reported such a hemispheric asymmetry by which a region in the left ITG was sensitive to digits during a visual search for a digit among letters, and a homologous region in the right ITG that showed greater digit sensitivity in individuals with higher calculation skills. However, the ITG regions were localized with separate analyses without directly contrasting their digit sensitivities and relation to calculation skills. So, the extent of and reasons for these functional asymmetries remain unclear. Here we probe whether the functional and representational properties of the ITNAs are asymmetric by applying both univariate and multivariate region-of-interest analyses to Pollack and Price's (2019) data. Contrary to the implications of the original findings, digit sensitivity did not differ between ITNAs, and digit sensitivity in both left and right ITNAs was associated with calculation skills. Representational similarity analyses revealed that the overall representational geometries of digits in the ITNAs were also correlated, albeit weakly, but the representational contents of the ITNAs were largely inconclusive. Nonetheless, we found a right lateralization in engagement in alphanumeric categorization, and that the right ITNA showed greater discriminability between digits and letters. Greater right lateralization of digit sensitivity and digit discriminability in the left ITNA were also related to higher calculation skills. Our findings thus suggest that the ITNAs may not be functionally identical and should be directly contrasted in future work. Recent studies have suggested that emotional reactivity changes with age, but the neural basis is still unclear. The insula may be critical for the emotional reactivity. The current study examined how ageing affects emotional reactivity using the emotional reactivity task data from a human sample (Cambridge Center for Age and Neuroscience, N = 243, age 18-88 years). The resting-state magnetic resonance measurements from the same sample were used to investigate the potential mechanisms of the insula. In the initial analysis, we conducted partial correlation assessments to examine the associations between emotional reactivity and age, as well as between the gray matter volume (GMV) of the insula and age. Our results revealed that emotional reactivity, especially positive emotional reactivity, decreased with age and that the GMV of the insula was negatively correlated with age. Subsequently, the bilateral insula was divided into six subregions to calculate the whole brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC). The mediating effect of the rsFC on age and emotional reactivity was then calculated. The results showed that the rsFC of the left anterior insula (AI) with the right hippocampus, and the rsFCs of the right AI with the striatum and the thalamus were mediated the relationship between positive emotional reactivity and age. Our findings suggest that attenuating emotional reactivity with age may be a strategic adaptation fostering emotional stability and diminishing emotional vulnerability. Much of human culture's advanced technology owes its existence to the ability to mentally manipulate quantities. Neuroscience has described the brain regions overall recruited by numerical tasks and the neuronal codes representing individual quantities during perceptual tasks. Nevertheless, it remains unknown how quantity representations are combined or transformed during mental computations and how specific quantities are coded in the brain when generated as the result of internal computations rather than evoked by a stimulus. Here, we imaged the brains of adult human subjects at 7 Tesla during an approximate calculation task designed to disentangle in- and outputs of the computation from the operation itself. While physically presented sample numerosities were distinguished in activity patterns along the dorsal visual pathway and within frontal and occipito-temporal regions, a representation of the internally generated result was most prominently detected in higher order regions such as angular gyrus and lateral prefrontal cortex. Behavioral precision in the task was related to cross-decoding performance between sample and result representations in medial IPS regions. This suggests the transformation of sample into result may be carried out within dorsal stream sensory-motor integration regions, and resulting outputs maintained for task purposes in higher-level regions in a format possibly detached from sensory-evoked inputs., (© 2024. Dual-process theories propose that recognition memory involves recollection and familiarity; however, the impact of motor expertise on memory recognition, especially the interplay between familiarity and recollection, is relatively unexplored. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study used videos of a dancer performing International Latin Dance Styles as stimuli to investigate memory recognition in professional dancers and matched controls. Participants observed and then reported whether they recognized dance actions, recording the level of confidence in their recollections, whereas blood-oxygen-level-dependent signals measured encoding and recognition processes. Professional dancers showed higher accuracy and hit rates for high-confidence judgments, whereas matched controls exhibited the opposite trend for low-confidence judgments. The right putamen and precentral gyrus showed group-based moderation effects, especially for high-confidence (vs. low-confidence) action recognition in professional dancers. During action recognition, the right superior temporal gyrus and insula showed increased activation for accurate recognition and high-confidence retrieval, particularly in matched controls. These findings highlighting enhanced action memory of professional dancers-evident in their heightened recognition confidence-not only supports the dual-processing model but also underscores the crucial role of expertise-driven familiarity in bolstering successful recollection. How does the brain represent information about motion events in relation to agentive and physical forces? In this study, we investigated the neural activity patterns associated with observing animated actions of agents (e.g., an agent hitting a chair) in comparison to similar movements of inanimate objects that were either shaped solely by the physics of the scene (e.g., gravity causing an object to fall down a hill and hit a chair) or initiated by agents (e.g., a visible agent causing an object to hit a chair). Using an fMRI-based multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), this design allowed testing where in the brain the neural activity patterns associated with motion events change as a function of, or are invariant to, agentive versus physical forces behind them. A total of 29 human participants (nine male) participated in the study. Cross-decoding revealed a shared neural representation of animate and inanimate motion events that is invariant to agentive or physical forces in regions spanning frontoparietal and posterior temporal cortices. Objective: Studies have shown changes in the human brain associated with physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The effects of CRF on cortical thickness have been well-described in older adults, where a positive association between CRF and cortical thickness has been reported, but the impact of sustained aerobic activity in young adults remains poorly described. Here, exploratory analysis was performed on cortical thickness data that was collected in groups of fit and sedentary young adults., Methods: Twenty healthy sedentary individuals (<2 h/week physical activity) were compared to 20 active individuals (>6 h/week physical activity) and cortical thickness was measured in 34 cortical areas. Cortical thickness values were compared between groups, and correlations between cortical thickness and VO2 max were tested., Results: Cardiorespiratory fitness was significantly higher in active individuals compared to sedentary individuals. Cortical thickness was lower in regions of the left (lateral and medial orbitofrontal cortex, pars orbitalis, pars triangularis, rostral anterior cingulate cortex, superior temporal cortex and frontal pole) and right (lateral and medial orbitofrontal cortex and pars opercularis) hemispheres. Only the left frontal pole and right lateral orbitofrontal cortical thickness remained significant after false discovery rate correction. Negative correlations were observed between VO2 max and cortical thickness in the left (frontal pole) and right (caudal anterior cingulate and medial orbitofrontal cortex) hemispheres., Conclusion: The present exploratory analysis supports previous findings suggesting that neuroplastic effects of cardiorespiratory fitness may be attenuated in young compared with older individuals, underscoring a moderating effect of age on the relationship between fitness and cortical thickness., (Copyright © 2023 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. The hippocampus is an archicortical structure, consisting of subfields with unique circuits. Understanding its microstructure, as proxied by these subfields, can improve our mechanistic understanding of learning and memory and has clinical potential for several neurological disorders. One prominent issue is how to parcellate, register, or retrieve homologous points between two hippocampi with grossly different morphologies. Here, we present a surface-based registration method that solves this issue in a contrast-agnostic, topology-preserving manner. Dyslexia, a frequent learning disorder, is characterized by severe impairments in reading and writing and hypoactivation in reading regions in the left hemisphere. Despite decades of research, it remains unclear to date if observed behavioural deficits are caused by aberrant network interactions during reading and whether differences in functional activation and connectivity are directly related to reading performance. Here we provide a comprehensive characterization of reading-related brain connectivity in adults with and without dyslexia. We find disrupted functional coupling between hypoactive reading regions, especially between the left temporo-parietal and occipito-temporal cortices, and an extensive functional disruption of the right cerebellum in adults with dyslexia. Network analyses suggest that individuals with dyslexia process written stimuli via a dorsal decoding route and show stronger reading-related interaction with the right cerebellum. Moreover, increased connectivity within networks is linked to worse reading performance in dyslexia. Collectively, our results provide strong evidence for aberrant task-related connectivity as a neural marker for dyslexia that directly impacts behavioural performance. Background: OCD is featured as the destruction of information storage and processing. The cognition of neurobiological and clinical heterogeneity is in suspense and poorly studied., Methods: Ninety-nine patients and matched HCs(n = 104) were recruited and underwent resting-state functional MRI scans. We applied INT to evaluate altered local neural dynamics representing the ability of information integration. Moreover, considering OCD was a highly heterogeneous disorder, we investigated putative OCD subtypes from INT using a novel semi-supervised machine learning, named HYDRA., Results: Compared with HCs, patients with OCD showed decreased INTs in extensive brain regions, including bilateral cerebellum and precuneus, STG/MTG and PCC, hippocampus in DMN; right IFG/MFG/SFG, SPL and bilateral angular gyrus in CEN and insula, SMA in SN. Moreover, many other regions involved in visual processing also had disrupted dynamics of local neural organization, consisting of bilateral CUN, LING and fusiform gyrus and occipital lobe. HYDRA divided patients into two distinct neuroanatomical subtypes from INT. Subtype 1 showed decreased INTs in distributed networks, while subtype 2 presented increased in several common regions which were also found to be decreased in subtype 1, such as STG, IPL, postcentral gyrus and left insula, supramarginal gyrus., Conclusion: This study showed distinct abnormalities from the perspective of dynamics of local neural organization in OCD. Using fMRI, we investigated the effects of age and divided attention on the neural correlates of familiarity and their relationship with memory performance. At study, word pairs were visually presented to young and older participants under the requirement to make a relational judgment on each pair. Participants were then scanned while undertaking an associative recognition test under single and dual (auditory tone detection) task conditions. The test items comprised studied, rearranged (words from different studied pairs) and new word pairs. fMRI familiarity effects were operationalized as greater activity elicited by studied pairs incorrectly identified as 'rearranged' than by correctly rejected new pairs. The reverse contrast was employed to identify 'novelty' effects. Behavioral familiarity estimates were equivalent across age groups and task conditions. Robust fMRI familiarity effects were identified in several regions, including medial and superior lateral parietal cortex, dorsal medial and left lateral prefrontal cortex, and bilateral caudate. fMRI novelty effects were identified in the anterior medial temporal lobe. Both familiarity and novelty effects were largely age-invariant and did not vary, or varied minimally, according to task condition. In addition, the familiarity effects correlated positively with a behavioral estimate of familiarity strength irrespective of age. We investigated how repeated exposure to a stimulus affects intersubject synchrony in the brains of young and older adults. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain responses to familiar and novel stimuli. Young adults participated in a familiarization paradigm designed to mimic 'natural' exposure while older adults were presented with stimuli they had known for more than 50 years. Intersubject synchrony was calculated to detect common stimulus-driven brain activity across young and older adults as they listened to the novel and familiar stimuli. Contrary to our hypotheses, synchrony was not related to the amount of stimulus exposure; both young and older adults showed more synchrony to novel than to familiar stimuli regardless of whether the stimuli had been heard once, known for a few weeks, or known for more than 50 years. In young adults these synchrony differences were found across the brain in the bilateral temporal lobes, and in the frontal orbital cortex. In older adults the synchrony differences were found only in the bilateral temporal lobes. This reduction may be related to an increase in idiosyncratic responses after exposure to a stimulus but does not seem to be related to how well the stimuli are learned or to differences in attention. Until the effects of repeated exposure on synchrony are fully understood, future studies using intersubject synchrony, where the novelty of the stimuli cannot be guaranteed, may consider exposing all of their participants to the stimuli once before data are collected to mitigate the effects of any systematic differences in stimulus exposure., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: Time orientation is a fundamental cognitive process in which one's personal sense of time is matched with a universal reference. Time orientation is commonly assessed through mental status examination, yet its neural correlates remain unclear. Large lesions have been associated with deficits in time orientation, but the regional anatomy implicated in time disorientation is not well established. The current study investigates the anatomy of time disorientation and its network correlates in patients with focal brain lesions., Methods: Time orientation was assessed 3 months or more after lesion onset using the Benton Temporal Orientation Test (BTOT) in 550 patients with acquired, focal brain lesions, 39 of whom were impaired. Multivariate lesion-symptom mapping and lesion network mapping were used to evaluate the anatomy and networks associated with time disorientation. Performance on a variety of neuropsychological tests was compared between the time oriented and time disoriented group., Results: Lesion-symptom mapping showed that lesions of the precuneus, medial temporal lobes (MTL), and occipito-temporal cortex were associated with time disorientation (r = 0.264, p < 0.001). Lesion network mapping using normative connectome data demonstrated that these regional findings occurred along a network that includes white and gray matter connecting the precuneus and MTL. There was a strong behavioral and anatomical association of time disorientation with memory impairment, such that the 2 processes could not be fully disentangled., Interpretation: We interpret these findings as novel evidence for a network involving the precuneus and the medial temporal lobe in supporting time orientation. The left hemisphere tool-use network consists of the dorso-dorsal, ventro-dorsal, and ventral streams, each with distinct computational abilities. In the dual-loop model, the ventral pathway through the extreme capsule is associated with conceptual understanding. We performed a learning experiment with fMRI to investigate how these streams interact when confronted with novel tools. In session one, subjects observed pictures and video sequences in real world action of known and unknown tools and were asked whether they knew the tools and whether they understood their function. In session two, video sequences of unknown tools were presented again, followed again by the question of understanding their function. Different conditions were compared to each other and effective connectivity (EC) in the tool-use network was examined. During concept acquisition of an unknown tool, EC between dorsal and ventral streams was found posterior in fusiform gyrus and anterior in inferior frontal gyrus, with a functional interaction between BA44d and BA45. When previously unknown tools were presented for a second time, EC was prominent only between dorsal stream areas. Understanding the concept of a novel tool requires an interaction of the ventral stream with the dorsal streams. Little information is available on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) determination of the hippocampal formation (HF) during the perinatal period. However, this exploration is increasingly used, which requires defining visible HF landmarks on MRI images, validated through histological analysis. This study aims to provide a protocol to identify HF landmarks on MRI images, followed by histological validation through serial sections of the temporal lobe of the samples examined, to assess the longitudinal extent of the hippocampus during the perinatal period. We examined ex vivo MRI images from nine infant control brain samples. Histological validation of the hippocampal formation MRI images was obtained through serial sectioning and examination of Nissl-stained sections at 250 μm intervals along the entire length of the hippocampal formation. Up to six landmarks were identified both in MRI images and the serial histological sections. Proceeding in an anterior to posterior (rostrocaudal) direction, these were as follows: 1) the limen insulae (fronto-temporal junction); 2) the beginning of the amygdaloid complex; 3) the beginning of the lateral ventricle; 4) the caudal limit of the uncus, indicated by the start of the lateral geniculate nucleus (at the level of the gyrus intralimbicus); 5) the end of the lateral geniculate nucleus (beginning of the pulvinar); and 6) the beginning of the fornix. After histological validation of each of these landmarks, the full longitudinal length of the hippocampal formation and distances between landmarks were calculated. No statistically significant differences were found in total length or between landmarks. While the HF is anatomically organized at birth, its annotation is particularly challenging to perform. The histological validation of HF landmarks allows a better understanding of MRI images. Contralateral bias is a well-known feature of early visual cortex, but how it varies across higher-level, category-selective visual cortex and how much that bias differs between preferred and nonpreferred is unclear. Here, we examined 12 category-selective regions across 4 experiments using peripherally presented faces, bodies, houses, and scenes, to measure the difference in contralateral bias between preferred and nonpreferred stimuli. These contralateral biases were stronger in the left hemisphere regions than right, an asymmetry that was unchanged even when participants performed an attentionally demanding task. Thus, corresponding pairs of category-selective regions (e.g., left fusiform face area [lFFA] and right FFA [rFFA]) do not appear to be mirror images of each other; instead, the right hemisphere regions engage in greater integration of information from the two hemifields. The rFFA and right fusiform body area-both located on the right lateral fusiform gyrus-consistently had the weakest contralateral biases. That this asymmetry was most pronounced in the fusiform gyrus may account for why a unilateral lesion to the rFFA but not the lFFA can produce prosopagnosia. Observing others' actions recruits frontoparietal and posterior temporal brain regions - also called the action observation network. It is typically assumed that these regions support recognizing actions of animate entities (e.g., person jumping over a box). However, objects can also participate in events with rich meaning and structure (e.g., ball bouncing over a box). So far, it has not been clarified which brain regions encode information specific to goal-directed actions or more general information that also defines object events. Here, we show a shared neural code for visually presented actions and object events throughout the action observation network. We argue that this neural representation captures the structure and physics of events regardless of animacy. We find that lateral occipitotemporal cortex encodes information about events that is also invariant to stimulus modality. Background and Objectives: Photophobia, a frequent and disabling symptom observed in various neurological conditions and eye diseases, is thought to involve maladaptive brain functioning. We assessed this hypothesis, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in photophobic patients with minimal-to-severe dry eye disease (DED), as compared to healthy controls., Methods: This prospective, monocentric, comparative, cohort study included eleven photophobic DED patients compared to eight controls. Photophobic patients had a complete evaluation of DED to exclude any other cause of photophobia. All participants were scanned with fMRI under intermittent light stimulation with a LED lamp (27s. ON, 27 s. OFF), and cerebral activations were studied with univariate contrasts between the ON and OFF conditions, and with functional connectivity methods., Results: Firstly, stimulation activated the occipital cortex more strongly in patients than in controls. Moreover, stimulation deactivated the superior temporal cortex in patients less than in controls. Secondly, functional connectivity analysis showed that light stimulation induced lesser decoupling between the occipital cortex and the salience and visual networks in patients than in controls., Discussion: The current data shows that DED patients with photophobia have maladaptive brain anomalies. There is hyperactivity in the cortical visual system, associated with abnormal functional interactions, both within the visual cortex, and between visual areas and salience control mechanisms. Such anomalies show similarities with other conditions such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, and neuropathic pain. Within the first years of life, children learn major aspects of their native language. However, the ability to process complex sentence structures, a core faculty in human language called syntax, emerges only slowly. A milestone in syntax acquisition is reached around the age of 4 years, when children learn a variety of syntactic concepts. Here, we ask which maturational changes in the child's brain underlie the emergence of syntactically complex sentence processing around this critical age. We relate markers of cortical brain maturation to 3- and 4-year-olds' sentence processing in contrast to other language abilities. Our results show that distinct cortical brain areas support sentence processing in the two age groups. Sentence production abilities at 3 years were associated with increased surface area in the most posterior part of the left superior temporal sulcus, whereas 4-year-olds showed an association with cortical thickness in the left posterior part of Broca's area, i.e. BA44. The present findings suggest that sentence processing abilities rely on the maturation of distinct cortical regions in 3- compared to 4-year-olds. Background: A bidirectional functional link between vestibular and fear-related disorders has been previously suggested., Objective: To test a potential overlap of vestibular and fear systems with regard to their brain imaging representation maps., Methods: By use of voxel-based mapping permutation of subject images, we conducted a meta-analysis of earlier functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies applying vestibular stimulation and fear conditioning in healthy volunteers., Results: Common clusters of concordance of vestibular stimulation and fear conditioning were found in the bilateral anterior insula cortex, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and the right temporal pole, bilaterally in the adjacent ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, secondary somatosensory cortex, superior temporal and intraparietal lobe, supplementary motor area and premotor cortex, as well as subcortical areas, such as the bilateral thalamus, mesencephalic brainstem including the collicular complex, pons, cerebellar vermis and bilateral cerebellar hemispheres. Peak areas of high concordance for activations during vestibular stimulation but deactivations during fear conditioning were centered on the posterior insula and S2., Conclusions: The structural overlap of both networks allows the following functional interpretations: first, the amygdala, superior colliculi, and antero-medial thalamus might represent a release of preprogramed sensorimotor patterns of approach or avoidance. Second, the activation (vestibular system) and deactivation (fear system) of the bilateral posterior insula is compatible with the view that downregulation of the fear network by acute vestibular disorders or unfamiliar vestibular stimulation makes unpleasant perceived body accelerations less distressing. Background: Anxiety and depressive symptoms usually co-occur. Neuroimaging abnormalities in patients with depression and anxiety disorders are therefore related to a combination of symptoms. Here, we used a large population study to select individuals with anxiety, depressive, or both anxiety and depressive symptoms to identify whether neuroimaging differences are unique or shared between anxiety and depressive symptoms., Methods: We selected four groups of 200 individuals (anxiety, depression, anxiety and depression, controls) from the UK Biobank, matched for age, sex, intelligence, and educational attainment (total N = 800). We extracted the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, which indexes spontaneous neuronal activity. Group differences were assessed using permutation testing to correct for multiple comparisons, with age, sex, IQ, and head motion as covariates., Results: Compared to controls, anxious individuals had higher ALFF values in many subcortical brain regions including the striatum, thalamus, medial temporal lobe, midbrain, pons, as well as the cerebellum. Anxious individuals also showed higher ALFF in the hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, cerebellum, and pons compared to individuals with depressive symptoms. No significant differences were found for the depression and combined anxiety/depression groups. Post-hoc tests with largest possible samples showed comparable results in the anxiety group and in the combined group, but still no significant differences for the depression group., Conclusions: Anxiety but not depressive symptoms were associated with increased subcortical activity during rest. Background and Purpose: Superagers are defined as older adults with episodic memory performance similar or superior to that in middle-aged adults. This study aimed to investigate the key differences in discriminative networks and their main nodes between superagers and cognitively average elderly controls. In addition, we sought to explore differences in sensitivity in detecting these functional activities across the networks at 3T and 7T MR imaging fields., Materials and Methods: Fifty-five subjects 80 years of age or older were screened using a detailed neuropsychological protocol, and 31 participants, comprising 14 superagers and 17 cognitively average elderly controls, were included for analysis. Participants underwent resting-state-fMRI at 3T and 7T MR imaging. A prediction classification algorithm using a penalized regression model on the measurements of the network was used to calculate the probabilities of a healthy older adult being a superager. Additionally, ORs quantified the influence of each node across preselected networks., Results: The key networks that differentiated superagers and elderly controls were the default mode, salience, and language networks. The most discriminative nodes (ORs > 1) in superagers encompassed areas in the precuneus posterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction, temporal pole, extrastriate superior cortex, and insula. The prediction classification model for being a superager showed better performance using the 7T compared with 3T resting-state-fMRI data set., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the functional connectivity in the default mode, salience, and language networks can provide potential imaging biomarkers for predicting superagers. Objective: We aimed to determine whether alterations in spontaneous regional brain activity in those with generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) and focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS) and explore whether the alterations could be used as biomarkers to classify disease subtypes through support vector machine analysis (SVM)., Methods: The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were extracted from 57 patients with GTCS, 35 patients with FBTCS, and 50 age-matched and sex-matched normal controls (NCs) using the DPARSF 5.0 toolbox. Between-group comparisons were adjusted for covariates (age, sex, and equipment). Correlation analyses between imaging biomarkers and the frequency or duration of seizure activity were calculated using partial correlations. The differential imaging indicators, age, and sex were considered as the discriminative features in the SVM to evaluate classification performance., Results: The patients with GTCS showed lower fALFF values (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, Gaussian random field corrected, GRF corrected) in the right postcentral gyrus and precentral gyrus and lower ReHo values (GRF corrected) in the middle temporal gyrus than the NCs. The patients with FBTCS showed higher fALFF (GRF corrected) values in the right postcentral and precentral gyrus and higher ReHo (GRF corrected) values in the right postcentral gyrus. Both fALFF (GRF corrected) and ReHo (GRF corrected) values were lower in the right postcentral gyrus and precentral gyrus in the GTCS group than in the FBTCS group. In patients with FBTCS, fALFF values in the right postcentral and precentral gyrus were positively correlated with duration (r = 0.655, p = 0.008, Bonferroni corrected) in the low-duration group, and ReHo values in the right postcentral gyrus were positively correlated with frequency (r = 0.486, p = 0.022, uncorrected) in the low-frequency group. Faces in motion reveal a plethora of information through visual dynamics. Faces can move in complex patterns while transforming facial shape, e.g., during the generation of different emotional expressions. While motion and shape processing have been studied extensively in separate research enterprises, much less is known about their conjunction during biological motion. Here, we took advantage of the discovery in brain-imaging studies of an area in the dorsal portion of the macaque monkey superior temporal sulcus (STS), the middle dorsal face area (MD), with selectivity for naturalistic face motion. To gain mechanistic insights into the coding of facial motion, we recorded single-unit activity from MD, testing whether and how MD cells encode face motion. The MD population was highly sensitive to naturalistic facial motion and facial shape. Some MD cells responded only to the conjunction of facial shape and motion, others were selective for facial shape even without movement, and yet others were suppressed by facial motion. We found that this heterogeneous MD population transforms face motion into a higher dimensional activity space, a representation that would allow for high sensitivity to relevant small-scale movements. Indeed, we show that many MD cells carry such sensitivity for eye movements. We further found that MD cells encode motion of head, mouth, and eyes in a separable manner, requiring the use of multiple reference frames. Thus, MD is a bona fide face-motion area that uses highly heterogeneous cell populations to create codes capturing even complex facial motion trajectories.

It is generally hypothesized that functional connectivity (FC) reflects the underlying structural connectivity (SC). The precuneus is associated with highly integrated cognitive functions. However, our understanding of the structural connections that could underlie them is limited. This study aimed to characterize the cortico-cortical connections by probabilistic tractography. The precuneus corresponds to the five cortical areas (7Am, PCV, 7Pm, 7m, POS2) on the HCP MMP atlas. We first conducted the atlas-based probabilistic tractography. The anterior part (7Am) was strongly connected to the sensorimotor region. The dorsal part (7Am, 7Pm) was highly connected with the adjacent parietal and temporal cortex, while the ventral part (PCV, 7m) showed strong connections with the adjacent posterior cingulate and medial prefrontal cortex. The most posterior part (POS2) was explicitly connected to the visual cortex. In addition, there was a correlation between SC and resting-state fMRI connectivity (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient = 0.322 ± 0.019, p < 0.05 corrected at subject level). There is a limited understanding of age differences in functional connectivity during memory encoding. In the present study, a sample of cognitively healthy adult participants (n = 488, 18-81 years), a subsample of whom had longitudinal cognitive and brain structural data spanning on average 8 years back, underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing an associative memory encoding task. We investigated (1) age-related differences in whole-brain connectivity during memory encoding; (2) whether encoding connectivity patterns overlapped with the activity signatures of specific cognitive processes, and (3) whether connectivity associated with memory encoding related to longitudinal brain structural and cognitive changes. Age was associated with lower intranetwork connectivity among cortical networks and higher internetwork connectivity between networks supporting higher level cognitive functions and unimodal and attentional areas during encoding. Task-connectivity between mediotemporal and posterior parietal regions-which overlapped with areas involved in mental imagery-was related to better memory performance only in older age. The connectivity patterns supporting memory performance in older age reflected preservation of thickness of the medial temporal cortex. The hippocampus is a uniquely infolded allocortical structure in the medial temporal lobe that consists of the microstructurally and functionally distinct subregions: subiculum, cornu ammonis, and dentate gyrus. The hippocampus is a remarkably plastic region that is implicated in learning and memory. At the same time it has been shown that hippocampal subregion volumes are heritable, and that genetic expression varies along a posterior to anterior axis. Here, we studied how a heritable, stable, hippocampal organisation may support its flexible function in healthy adults. Leveraging the twin set-up of the Human Connectome Project with multimodal neuroimaging, we observed that the functional connectivity between hippocampus and cortex was heritable and that microstructure of the hippocampus genetically correlated with cortical microstructure. Moreover, both functional and microstructural organisation could be consistently captured by anterior-to-posterior and medial-to-lateral axes across individuals. However, heritability of functional, relative to microstructural, organisation was found reduced, suggesting individual variation in functional organisation may be explained by experience-driven factors. Last, we demonstrate that structure and function couple along an inherited macroscale organisation, suggesting an interplay of stability and plasticity within the hippocampus. Leading and following is about synchronizing and joining actions in accordance with the differences that the leader and follower roles provide. The neural reactivity representing these roles was measured in an explorative fMRI-study, where two persons lead and followed each other in finger tapping using simple, individual, pre-learnt rhythms. All participants acted both as leader and follower. Neural reactivity for both lead and follow related to social awareness and adaptation distributed over the lateral STG, STS and TPJ. Reactivity for follow contrasted with lead mostly reflected sensorimotor and rhythmic processing in cerebellum IV, V, somatosensory cortex and SMA. During leading, as opposed to following, neural reactivity was observed in the insula and bilaterally in the superior temporal gyrus, pointing toward empathy, sharing of feelings, temporal coding and social engagement. Areas for continuous adaptation, in the posterior cerebellum and Rolandic operculum, were activated during both leading and following. This study indicated mutual adaptation of leader and follower during tapping and that the roles gave rise to largely similar neuronal reactivity. The differences between the roles indicated that leading was more socially focused and following had more motoric- and temporally related neural reactivity.

Previous research shows that, within human occipito-temporal cortex (OTC), we can use a general linear mapping function to link visual object responses across nonidentity feature changes, including Euclidean features (e.g., position and size) and non-Euclidean features (e.g., image statistics and spatial frequency). Although the learned mapping is capable of predicting responses of objects not included in training, these predictions are better for categories included than those not included in training. These findings demonstrate a near-orthogonal representation of object identity and nonidentity features throughout human OTC. Here, we extended these findings to examine the mapping across both Euclidean and non-Euclidean feature changes in human posterior parietal cortex (PPC), including functionally defined regions in inferior and superior intraparietal sulcus. We additionally examined responses in five convolutional neural networks (CNNs) pretrained with object classification, as CNNs are considered as the current best model of the primate ventral visual system. We separately compared results from PPC and CNNs with those of OTC. We found that a linear mapping function could successfully link object responses in different states of nonidentity transformations in human PPC and CNNs for both Euclidean and non-Euclidean features. Overall, we found that object identity and nonidentity features are represented in a near-orthogonal, rather than complete-orthogonal, manner in PPC and CNNs, just like they do in OTC. Meanwhile, some differences existed among OTC, PPC, and CNNs. Memory generalisations may be underpinned by either encoding- or retrieval-based generalisation mechanisms and different training schedules may bias some learners to favour one of these mechanisms over the other. We used a transitive inference task to investigate whether generalisation is influenced by progressive vs randomly interleaved training, and overnight consolidation. On consecutive days, participants learnt pairwise discriminations from two transitive hierarchies before being tested during fMRI. Inference performance was consistently better following progressive training, and for pairs further apart in the transitive hierarchy. BOLD pattern similarity correlated with hierarchical distances in the left hippocampus (HIP) and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) following both training schedules. These results are consistent with the use of structural representations that directly encode hierarchical relationships between task features. However, such effects were only observed in the MPFC for recently learnt relationships. Furthermore, the MPFC appeared to maintain structural representations in participants who performed at chance on the inference task. We conclude that humans preferentially employ encoding-based mechanisms to store map-like relational codes that can be used for memory generalisation. Substantial progress has been made studying morphological changes in brain regions during adolescence, but less is known of network-level changes in their relationship. Here, we compare covariance networks constructed from the correlation of morphometric volumes across 135 brain regions of marmoset monkeys in early adolescence and adulthood. Substantial shifts are identified in the topology of structural covariance networks in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and temporal lobe. PFC regions become more structurally differentiated and segregated within their own local network, hypothesized to reflect increased specialization after maturation. In contrast, temporal regions show increased inter-hemispheric covariances that may underlie the establishment of distributed networks. Regionally selective coupling of structural and maturational covariance is revealed, with relatively weak coupling in transmodal association areas. The latter may be a consequence of continued maturation within adulthood, but also environmental factors, for example, family size, affecting brain morphology. Background and Purpose: Understanding the pathogenesis of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is essential for its diagnosis and treatment. The study aimed to explore regional homogeneity (ReHo) and changes in effective connectivity (EC) between brain regions in TLE patients, hoping to discover potential abnormalities in certain brain regions in TLE patients., Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance data were collected from 23 TLE patients and 32 normal controls (NC). ReHo was used as a feature of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to explore the ability of its alterations in identifying TLE. Based on the results of the MVPA, certain brain regions were selected as seed points to further explore alterations in EC between brain regions using Granger causality analysis., Results: MVPA results showed that the classification accuracy for the TLE and NC groups was 87.27%, and the right posterior cerebellum lobe, right lingual gyrus (LING&#95;R), right cuneus (CUN&#95;R), and left superior temporal gyrus (STG&#95;L) provided significant contributions. Moreover, the EC from STG&#95;L to right fusiform gyrus (FFG&#95;R) and LING&#95;R and the EC from CUN&#95;R to the right occipital superior gyrus (SOG&#95;R) and right occipital middle gyrus (MOG&#95;R) were altered compared to the NC group., Conclusion: The MVPA results indicated that ReHo abnormalities in brain regions may be an important feature in the identification of TLE. Medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy is a core feature of age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD). While regional volumes and thickness are often used as a proxy for neurodegeneration, they lack the sensitivity to serve as an accurate diagnostic test and indicate advanced neurodegeneration. Here, we used a submillimeter resolution diffusion weighted MRI sequence (ZOOMit) to quantify microstructural properties of hippocampal subfields in older adults (63-98 years old) using tensor derived measures: fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). We demonstrate that the high-resolution sequence, and not a standard resolution sequence, identifies dissociable profiles for CA1, dentate gyrus (DG), and the collateral sulcus. Using ZOOMit, we show that advanced age is associated with increased MD of the CA1 and DG as well as decreased FA of the DG. Increased MD of the DG, reflecting decreased cellular density, mediated the relationship between age and word list recall. Further, increased MD in the DG, but not DG volume, was linked to worse spatial pattern separation. Our results demonstrate that ultrahigh-resolution diffusion imaging enables the detection of microstructural differences in hippocampal subfield integrity and will lead to novel insights into the mechanisms of age-related memory loss., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Previous studies have reported evidence supporting structural and functional alterations in the brains of methamphetamine (MA) users. The aim of the present study was to extend current knowledge regarding brain function(s) in MA users by examining regional homogeneity (ReHo). Chronic MA users (51 male, 46 female), who were undergoing supervised abstinence for 12 to 621 days, and 79 healthy controls (43 male, 36 female) underwent resting-state functional brain magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-wise whole-brain scale group differences in ReHo were examined. The mean ReHo values of significant clusters were extracted, and linear regression was used to identify factors that contributed to these mean ReHo values. MA users exhibited lower ReHo values in the left orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus extending to the left insula and left temporal pole, left amygdala, and left fusiform gyrus. MA users also exhibited greater ReHo values in the bilateral pre- and postcentral gyri and right cerebellum. Characteristics of MA use, including duration, duration of abstinence from MA, and age at onset of MA use, demonstrated no reliable contribution to ReHo of the significant clusters. Findings of the present study demonstrated that chronic MA use was associated with regional specific disruption of ReHo, which is relatively independent of structural and functional alterations and, apparently, does not recover after relatively long-term abstinence. Neural representation has long been thought to follow the modularity hypothesis, which states that each type of information corresponds to a specific brain area. Though supported by many studies, this hypothesis surfers the pitfall of inefficiency for information encoding. To overcome difficulties the modularity representation hypothesis faced, researchers have proposed that information may be distributed represented in a specific brain area. The distributed representation hypothesis along with the multi-variate pattern approaches have made great success in detecting representation patterns in the previous decade. However, this hypothesis implicitly requires that the pattern should be transformed in a consistent way with respect to all of the represented information in the specific brain area. And the accuracy and validity of this prediction have never been thoroughly tested. Here in the present study, we tested this prediction in two open datasets compiling the object recognition. We validated the distributed representation patterns in the lateral occipital complex/ventral temporal gyrus where all six classifiers were capable of predicting the correct category represented. Furthermore, we correlated the classifiers' decision function values to the bold signals and found that the decision function value of the logistic regression classifier was exclusively correlated with activities of the same brain area in both datasets. These results support the distributed representation hypothesis and suggest that our neural system may be embedded within the algorithm of a specific classifier., (Copyright © 2022. In this commentary, we highlight the role of the hippocampus as a binding device that may explain its recruitment during associative working-memory paradigms. Furthermore, we argue that both functional neuroimaging research, as presented in Slotnick (this issue), and carefully designed lesion studies in patients with selective bilateral hippocampal damage are crucial for advancing our understanding of the neural structures and processing involved in human memory in general and disentangling the role of the hippocampus proper and other medial temporal lobe structures in working-memory function and long-term encoding specifically.

Deficient visual organization ability not only indicates possible brain dysfunctions but further affects an individual's daily activities. This study aimed to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural network contributing to visual organization abilities in children and adolescents. A two-choice version of the Hooper Visual Organization Test (T-HVOT) was adapted as the fMRI task for the present study. The effects of age and gender on overall visual perceptual functions and related neural foundations were also analyzed. Seventy children and adolescents were administered with the Test of Visual Perceptual Skill-Third Edition and 41 completed the fMRI scans. The whole-brain fMRI mapping results showed the cortical activation of multiple brain areas relating to visual organization. The greatest cortical activities were seen in the middle occipital gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus, and two age groups showed significant differences in cortical activation patterns as well. Gender had no significant effects on visual perceptual functions nor related cortical activation patterns. The overall visual perception functions improve with age, and the different cortical activation patterns indicated that the two groups adopt different strategies while performing visual organization tasks. The sensitivity and spatial resolution of fMRI allowed us to make specific conclusions about cortical regions involved in visual organization function and to provide a reference for objectively judging rehabilitative outcomes.

Functional imaging experimental designs measuring fatigue, defined as a subjective lack of physical and/or mental energy characterizing a wide range of neurologic conditions, are still under development. Nineteen right-handed healthy subjects (9 M and 10 F, mean age 43.15 ± 8.34 years) were evaluated by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), asking them to perform explicit, first-person, mental imagery of fatigue-related multisensory sensations. Short sentences designed to assess the principal manifestations of fatigue from the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory were presented. Participants were asked to imagine the corresponding sensations (Sensory Imagery, SI). As a control, they had to imagine the visual scenes (Visual Imagery, VI) described in short phrases. The SI task (vs. VI task) differentially activated three areas: (i) the precuneus, which is involved in first-person perspective taking; (ii) the left superior temporal sulcus, which is a multisensory integration area; and (iii) the left inferior frontal gyrus, known to be involved in mental imagery network. Neural substrates of evidence accumulation have been a central issue in decision-making studies because of the prominent success of the accumulation model in explaining a wide range of perceptual decision making. Since accumulation-shaped activities have been found in multiple brain regions, which are called accumulators, questions regarding functional relations among these accumulators are emerging. This study employed the deconvolution method of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals from human male and female participants during object-category decision tasks, taking advantage of the whole-brain coverage of fMRI with improved availability of temporal information of the deconvolved activity. We detected the accumulation activity in many non-category-selective regions (NCSRs) over the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes as well as category-selective regions (CSRs) of the categorization task. Importantly, the frontal regions mostly showed activity peaks matching the decision timing (classified as "type-A accumulator"), while activity peaks of the parietal and temporal regions were behind the decision (classified as "type-B accumulator"). The CSRs showed activity peaks whose timing depended on both region and stimulus preference, plausibly reflecting the competition among the alternative choices (classified as "type-C accumulator"). The results suggest that these functionally heterogeneous accumulators form a system for evidence accumulation in which the type-A accumulator regions make decisions in a general manner while the type-B and type-C accumulator regions are employed depending on the modality and content of decision tasks. The concept of the accumulation system may provide a key to understanding the universality of the accumulation model over various kinds of decision tasks. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Perceptual decision making, such as deciding to walk or stop on seeing the signal colors, has been explained theoretically by the accumulation model, in which sensory information is accumulated to reach a certain threshold for making decisions. Neural substrates of this model, however, are still under elucidation among candidate regions found over the brain. We show here that, taking advantage of the whole-brain coverage of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with improving availability of temporal information by deconvolution method, the accumulation is conducted by a system comprising many regions in different abstraction levels and only a part of these regions in the frontal cortex make decisions.
