This paper analyses magnetosphere‐ionosphere (M‐I) coupling from a perspective that is independent of inertial reference frame, and delineates how physical theories of M‐I coupling are affected by the principle of relativity. For the first time in the context of M‐I coupling, we discuss the literature from the 1970s on how the low‐velocity limit of the theory of special relativity is applied to electrodynamics. In most M‐I coupling theories, a particular low‐velocity limit applies, known as the "magnetic limit." Two important consequences of this literature are: (a) significant displacement currents in Maxwell's equations break the Galilean invariance of the equations and (b) magnetic fields are not generated by currents created by a net charge density in motion. We show how reference frame‐independent descriptions of M‐I coupling require that ion‐neutral relative velocities and ion‐neutral collisions are key drivers of the physics. Currents are independent of reference frame whereas electric fields depend on reference frame. Starting with the same momentum equations that are typically used to derive Ohm's law, it is possible to express the perpendicular ionospheric current as depending on collisions between ions and neutrals, and electrons and neutrals, without reference to electric fields. Ignoring the relative motion between ions and neutrals results in errors exceeding 100% for estimates of high latitude Joule heating during significant geomagnetic storms, when ion‐neutral velocity differences are largest near the initiation of large‐scale ion convection. Plain Language Summary: Interactions between the magnetized and ionized solar wind, the magnetospheric cavity surrounding Earth, and Earth's ionized upper atmosphere (ionosphere) can create rapid (∼1 km/s) large‐scale motions of the ionosphere during periods known as geomagnetic storms. We use the principle of relativity (PR) to gain insight into the complex physics of these interactions. Relativity states that the physics governing geospace must be independent of the velocity of an observer making measurements of the system. We write key equations governing interactions of the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system in terms of quantities that do not depend on the observer's motion. In doing so, we find that some previous theories had over‐emphasized the importance of a large‐scale electric field that grows during storms, while neglecting important physics related to collisions between the ionized portion of the atmosphere and the un‐ionized "neutral" component that contains much more mass. These collisional interactions create upper atmospheric heating and expansion, and cause large‐scale currents to flow between the ionosphere and magnetosphere, resulting in a multitude of impacts to our technological society. Using the PR, and isolating the physics that is independent of observer motion, led us to a deeper understanding of key physical processes during storms. Significant polar topside total electron content (topTEC) enhancement (PTTE) above 1,336 km altitude is reported for the first time. The results are based on GPS measurements during 2008–2019 from NASA's Jason‐2 satellite with zenith‐oriented antennas. The observations show increasing topTEC toward the southern polar cap at geomagnetic latitudes poleward of 65°S, where TEC values are normally very low. A case study for the 2013 St. Patrick's Day storm indicates that the enhancement can exceed 5.5 TEC units above the dayside ambient state, corresponding to 78% increase. Comparisons with COSMIC/FORMOSAT‐3 topTEC measurements above 800 km altitude confirm that PTTE events are observed from both Jason‐2 and COSMIC on the same day. Our statistical analysis of the Jason‐2 data in the southern polar region reveals that PTTE mostly occurs on the dayside, with a seasonal preference of southern summer, and preferentially during geomagnetically disturbed days but can also occur during quiet days. PTTE during storm days shows increased occurrence, magnitude, and deviation from the mean in the cusp region compared with quiet days. Our case analysis indicates that PTTE is observed simultaneously with the effect of tongue of ionization. This suggests that the during storms, dayside F region plasma moving poleward following the antisunward plasma convection may also be part of the PTTE source, and the plasma upflow driven by the polar wind may act to cause PTTE. Forecasting conditions in the thermosphere and ionosphere is a key outcome expected from space weather research. In this work, we perform numerical simulations using the first‐principles models Global Ionosphere‐Thermosphere Model (GITM) and Thermosphere‐Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIE‐GCM) to address the reliability of thermospheric‐ionospheric forecasts. When considering forecasts applicable to periods of geomagnetic activity, careful consideration is required of model inputs, which largely determine how the models will simulate disturbed conditions. We adopt an approach to drive the models with solar wind parameters and the 10.7 cm solar radio flux. This aligns our investigation with recent research and operational activities to forecast solar wind conditions on the Earth a few days in advance. In this work, we examine a weak geomagnetic storm, the June 2012 high‐speed‐stream event, for which we drive GITM and TIE‐GCM with observed solar wind and F10.7 values. We find general agreement between the simulations and observation‐based Global Ionospheric Maps of the total electron content (TEC) response. However, overestimated TEC response is found in the middle to low latitudinal region of the American sector and surrounding areas for both GITM and TIE‐GCM during similar time periods. By conducting numerical modeling experiments and comparing the modeling results with observational data, we find that the overestimated TEC response can be almost equally attributed to the solar wind driving and F10.7 driving during the June 2012 event. We conclude that the accuracy of the high‐latitude electric field and the solar irradiance is crucial to reproduce the TEC response in forecastable‐mode modeling. In this brief note we explore the role of the neutral atmosphere in magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling. We analyze momentum balance in the ion rest frame to form hypotheses regarding the role of neutral momentum in the lower ionosphere during geomagnetic storms. Neutral momentum that appears in the ion rest frame is likely the result of momentum imparted to ionospheric ions by solar wind flow and the resultant magnetospheric dynamics. The resulting ionneutral collisions lead to the existence of an electric field. Horizontal electron flow balances the momentum supplied by this electric field. We suggest a possible role played by the neutral atmosphere in generating field-aligned currents due to local auroral heating. Our physical interpretation suggests that thermospheric neutral dynamics plays a complementary role to the high-latitude field-aligned currents and electric fields resulting from magnetospheric dynamics. We have explored the use of COSMIC data to provide valuable scientific information on the ionospheric impacts of energetic particle precipitation during geomagnetic storms. Ionospheric electron density in the E region, and hence ionospheric conductivity, is significantly altered by precipitating particles from the magnetosphere. This has global impacts on the thermosphere-ionosphere because of the important role of conductivity on high-latitude Joule heating. Two high-speed stream (HSS) and two coronal mass ejection (CME) storms are examined with the COSMIC data. We find clear correlation between geomagnetic activity and electron density retrievals from COSMIC. At nighttime local times, the number of profiles with maximum electron densities in the E layer (below 200 km altitude) is well correlated with geomagnetic activity. We interpret this to mean that electron density increases due to precipitation are captured by the COSMIC profiles. These "E-layer-dominant ionosphere" (ELDI) profiles have geomagnetic latitudes that are consistent with climatological models of the auroral location. For the two HSS storms that occurred in May of 2011 and 2012, a strong hemispheric asymmetry is observed, with nearly all the ELDI profiles found in the Southern, less sunlit, Hemisphere. Stronger aurora and precipitation have been observed before in winter hemispheres, but the degree of asymmetry deserves further study. For the two CME storms, occurring in July and November of 2012, large increases in the number of ELDI profiles are found starting in the storm's main phase but continuing for several days into the recovery phase. Analysis of the COSMIC profiles was extended to all local times for the July 2012 CME storm by relaxing the ELDI criterion and instead visually inspecting all profiles above 50- magnetic latitude for signatures of precipitation in the E region. For 9 days during the July 2012 period, we find a signature of precipitation occurs nearly uniformly in local time, although the magnitude of electron density increase may vary with local time. The latitudinal extent of the precipitation layers is generally consistent with auroral climatology. However, after the storm main phase on 14 July 2012 the precipitation tended to be somewhat more equatorward than the climatology (by about 5-10° latitude) and equatorward of the auroral boundary data acquired from the SSUSI sensor onboard the F18 DMSP satellite. We conclude that, if analyzed appropriately, high-latitude COSMIC profiles have the potential to contribute to our understanding of MI coupling processes and extend and improve existing models of the auroral region. This overview paper presents/discusses the major solar, interplanetary, magnetospheric, and ionospheric features of the CAWSES II interval of study: 7-17 March 2012. Magnetic storms occurred on 7, 9, 12, and 15 March with peak SYM-H intensities of -98 nT, -148 nT, -75 nT (pressure corrected), and -79 nT, respectively. These are called the S1, S2, S3, and S4 events. Although three of the storm main phases (S1, S3, and S4) were caused by IMF Bsouth sheath fields and the S2 event was associated with a magnetic cloud (MC), the detailed scenario for all four storms were different. Two interplanetary features with unusually high temperatures and intense and quiet magnetic fields were identified located antisunward of the MCs (S2 and S3). These features are signatures of either coronal loops or coronal sheaths. A high speed stream (HSS) followed the S4 event where the presumably southward IMF Bz components of the Alfvén waves extended the storm ''recovery phase'' by several days. The ICME-associated shocks were particularly intense. The fast forward shock for the S2 event had a magnetosonic Mach number of ~9.4, the largest in recorded history. All of the shocks associated with the ICMEs created sudden impulses (SI+s) at Earth. The shocks preceding the S2 and S3 magnetic storms caused unusually high SI+ intensities of ~60 and 68 nT, respectively.
