The effects of disorder on the magnetic phases as well as on the conduction process are extensively studied in LaFeO3 nanoparticles in a wide field and temperature ranges. The disorder induced by Na in LaFeO3 alters its robust magnetic phase to the coexistence of distinctly different magnetic orders. The phase purity of the samples, which plays an important role, is detected by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Detailed magnetic measurements are carried out to investigate the evolution of phases due to substitutions. The samples show the coexistence of a superparamagnetic phase along with a weak ferromagnetic phase, and the ratio of the two distinct phases varies with substitutions. The Mössbauer measurement supported the said magnetic phases in the samples. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis clarifies the simultaneous presence of Fe3+ and Fe4+ due to Na+ incorporation. Furthermore, the electrical conduction is found to be greatly influenced by such substitutional disorder. From the dielectric measurement, a p-type polaronic conduction mechanism is found in 25% Na incorporation, which is mainly due to the hole hopping between Fe4+ and Fe3+ states. The semicircles in the whole temperature range in the Cole–Cole plots of impedance and modulus spectra are the co-contribution of the grain and the grain boundary effect in the conduction process. The acrylamide polymer gel template method has been adopted to synthesize single phase Dy1–xGdxMnO3 (DGMO, x= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) ceramics. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction patterns recorded at room temperature suggests that DGMO ceramics are stabilized in an orthorhombic crystal structure with a Pnma space group. Gd3+ cations play an important role in stabilizing the orthorhombic phase and the unit cell volume increases with x. We report the phonon spectra of pure and Gd-substituted DyMnO3 (DMO) and their mode assignments. Raman modes are softened with x due to the relaxation in the stiffness constants upon the increase in the volume of the unit cell. The magnetic transition temperatures corresponding to TN(Dy) and Tlock decrease with the increase in Gd concentration as inferred from the temperature dependent magnetization data (M–T curve). The magnetization value increases below TN(Dy) with the increase in the Gd concentration as observed from the M–T plot. The magnetic hysteresis loop is fitted to extract ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic contributions for each composition x. Fittings of M–H loops indicate the increase in the magnetic contribution below TN(Dy) upon increasing the Gd dopant concentrations, while that decreases above TN(Dy). The temperature dependent specific heat data identifies these magnetic transition temperatures TN(Dy), Tlock and TN(Mn). Furthermore, magnetic field dependencies on TN(Dy), Tlock and TN(Mn) are studied in an elaborate manner. Modifying Fe and Mn contents in GaFeO3 (GFO) enhances the magnetic properties, increases the magnetic transition temperature (TC) and reduces the leakage current. Here, we report structural, magnetic, and leakage current characteristics of manganese-doped gallium ferrite with different Fe-content, i.e. Ga2−xFexO3 (1 ≤ x ≤ 1.4) system. Structural characterization reveals that all the samples retain the orthorhombic phase with space group Pc21n for above amounts of doping. Magnetization of the samples with respect to temperature shows the lower magnetic transition temperature (TC) for pure GFO, i.e. 220 K, which increases to 345 K above room temperature (RT) for 2% Mn-doped Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 (GFMO3). Higher remanent magnetization (∼16 emu g−1) with a lower coercive field (∼4 kOe) is obtained for Mn-doped Ga0.6Fe1.4O3. We found the decrease of leakage current with doping of Mn. The observation of multiferroicity in these single-phase materials (i.e. GFO3 and GFMO3) at RT make them potential candidates for memory, multifunctional, and spintronics device applications. Abstract Single phase polycrystalline DyMnO 3 (DMO) was synthesized using acrylamide polymer gel template method. We report the structural, magnetic, specific heat and dielectric properties of DMO over wide experimental conditions. Room temperature XRD pattern shows the formation of singe phase material without any impurity. The magnetic properties such as magnetization versus temperature (M vs. T) and magnetization versus magnetic field (M vs. H) were studied around the transition temperatures region. The temperature dependent magnetization data suggest two phase transitions corresponding to the lock-in temperature below which ferroelectric ordering exist (around 19 K; T lock) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Dy spin (around 8 K; T N (Dy)). The magnetic hysteresis obtained were fitted to extract weak ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic (AFM/PM) contribution to the magnetic data. The order of magnetic transitions were analyzed from Arrott plot. The temperature dependent specific heat measurement shows all three phase transitions corresponding to (i) AFM ordering of Mn spin (around 38 K; T N (Mn)), (ii) T lock transition and (iii) T N (Dy) transition. The effect of magnetic field to the transitions were studied using specific heat capacity measurement. The peak intensity of T N (Dy) decreases on the application of magnetic field whereas peak intensity of T lock increases with increase in magnetic field in specific heat measurement. Further the third anomaly, T N (Mn) remains more or less unaffected by the application of magnetic field. The intrinsic dielectric behaviour of the material was observed up to 160 K, above this temperature there is large increase in dielectric value due to the contribution from Maxwell- Wagner polarization. • Temperature dependent dielectric studies on SrTiO 3 /SrRuO 3 /GaFeO 3 (STO/SRO/GFO) suggest the ferroelectric-relaxor behavior. • Magnetization vs Temperature measured both at field-cooled (FC) and (zero-field-cooled) ZFC shows large bifurcation with transition temperature at 240 K. • The clear and reversible out-of-phase contrast is seen in the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) phase and amplitude images. • Polarization vs electric field (P-E) hysteresis loop study on STO/SRO/GFO/Pt reveals the remanent polarization of polarization of ∼30 µC/cm2 and coercive field (E C) of 0.09 MV/cm. We report a detailed investigation on magnetic and electrical properties of the multiferroic GaFeO 3 (GFO) thin films grown on SrRuO 3 (SRO) buffered SrTiO 3 (1 1 1) substrates. The magnetic transition temperature (T c) of GFO thin films is observed ∼240 K, which is higher by 20 K than in GFO ceramic. The clear and reversible out-of-plane phase-contrast seen in the Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) phase and amplitude images measured within positive and negative poling confirms the polarization reorientation and hence piezoelectric nature of the compound. The temperature and frequency dependence of permittivity studies demonstrates the relaxor behavior of these thin films. The observed near room temperature (RT) magnetic phase transition with RT piezoelectric nature of these thin films elucidates the possible potential candidates for a multiferroic world with spintronics device applications.
