Melt spinning of rare-earth cobalt alloys yields ribbons which have the hexagonal PrCo5 phase as the major phase. Consolidation of these ribbons at very high pressures and temperatures yields fully-dense hot-pressed magnets with isotropic magnetic properties. Nearly 75% saturation magnetization is exhibited by these magnets.

The magnetoresistance (MR) in Co/Ru sandwiches depends on temperature. The dependence is weak for thin Ru layer, but is stronger for thicker Ru layers. The saturation MR exhibits three oscillations as functions of Ru layers. The saturation MR decreases when the temperature is between 4.2 and 300 K and increases beyond 300 K.

The suppression of oxidation in Co/Cu multilayer films increases the magnetoresistance ratio. The antiferromagnetic coupling is increased when there is no oxidation of the interfaces between Co and Cu in the multilayers. Oxidation is prevented by the deposition of the film in a low background pressure with an Fe buffer layer.

A newly developed state tracking method which utilizes full potential linearized augmented plane wave energy band method reveals the interface magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of Pd/Co/Pd(001) and Cu/Co/Cu(001) sandwiches. The Co/Cu sandwiches exhibit a decrease in strong negative MCA energy for the Co monolayer. For Co/Pd, this energy is positive due to interfacial hybridization.

Temperature-dependent linear saturation magnetostriction of polycrystalline Co(100-x)Pdx changes from positive to negative when x is increased to high at percentage Pd values. The unquenched orbital moments at this high value add an extra one-ion mechanism to the magnetostriction parameter, resulting in the band process and ion process origins of temperature dependency.
