The authors review the publications on rare-earth ions. The topics of interest include spin states of rare-earth ions and the nature of magnetic coupling which involves gadolinium(III).

Research has been conducted on the binuclear metal-radical complexes. The synthesis of these complexes formed by the reaction of M(hfac) (sub)2 .2H (sub)2 O where M=Mn or Ni and hfac= hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with the 1,5-dimethyl-3-(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)-6-oxoverdazyl radical is described.

Research has been conducted on the Jahn-Teller effect. The importance of this effect in governing the magnetic properties of the transition metal complexes with the orbital triplet ground terms is discussed.

The study concerning structural and physical properties of three dimensional spin crossover compound [Fe (btr) (sub)3] (ClO (sub)4) (sub)2 is presented. Experiments demonstrate magnetic properties of the compound and the effect of temperature on it to demonstrate a two-step spin conversion.

Research concerning the study and characterization of two compounds [N (CH (sub)3) (sub)4][Cu (N (sub)3 (sub)3] and [N (CH (sub)3 (sub)4][Mn (N (sub)3 (sub)3] is analyzed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate antiferromagnetic couplings for both compounds.

Research has been conducted on the mononuclear-ligand complex [Gd(CF (sub)3 CO (sub)2) (sub)3 (phen) (sub)2 (H (sub)2 O)]. The preparation, the single-crystal structure and the magnetic behavior of this complex have been examined and the results are discussed.

Many animals can detect the Earth's magnetic field and use it as a cue for orientation. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms and circuitry that underlie this ability. Previous work on Tritonia diomedea, a marine mollusc capable of magnetic orientation, identified a pair of bilaterally symmetric neurons (LPd5 and RPd5) in the CNS that increased their electrical activity in response to changes in Earth-strength magnetic fields. We have isolated another pair of bilaterally symmetric neurons (LPd6 and RPd6) that also increase their electrical activity in response to changes of the magnetic field. These four neurons (Pd 5 and 6) respond similarly to changes in the magnetic field. In addition, they receive common synaptic inputs, have axons located in nerves that innervate the foot, and contain peptides that have been shown to stimulate ciliary beating on the foot epithelium. Because T. diomedea locomote by ciliary beating, we hypothesize that these four neurons (Pd5 and 6) play a role in the motor output of T. diomedea's magnetic orientation behavior.
