Abstract

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection is frequently used for oil and gas pipeline inspection, especially for evaluation of the integrity of pipelines. The success of the MFL technique depends on many parameters. However, a sensitive magnetic sensor is an important requirement. Therefore, magnetic field sensors based on different mechanisms have been developed and applied to the MFL technique. In this paper, we evidence for the first time the capability of an innovative device based on a planar Hall magnetoresistance sensor devoted to MFL detection. This promising prototype combines all the required qualifications such as high sensitivity, low thermal drift, and bipolar and linear responses to the magnetic field. New achievements are carried out on embedded sensors in a testing platform reflecting pipeline environments. The ultrasensitive magnetic mapping concludes to a convincing technical approach with a high potential application toward MFL inspection, especially for the detection of shallow defects appearing at near side, far side, and sub-surface of a pipe wall.

Abstract

International audience; A promising and original method to study the spin‐transition in bistable spin‐crossover (SCO) materials using a magnetoresistive multiring sensor and its self‐generated magnetic field is reported. Qualitative and quantitative studies are carried out combining theoretical and experimental approaches. The results show that only a small part of matter dropped on the sensor surface is probed by the device. At a low bias‐current range, the number of detected nanoparticles depends on the amplitude of the current. However, in agreement with the theoretical model, the stray voltage from the particles is proportional to the current squared. By changing both the bias current and the concentration of particle droplet, the thermal hysteresis of an ultrasmall volume, 1 × 10−4 mm3, of SCO particles is measured. The local probe of the experimental setup allows a highest resolution of 4 × 10−14 emu to be reached, which is never achieved by experimental methods at room temperature.

Abstract

International audience; The ability to stabilize the sensitivity of a magnetoresistance sensor in unstable thermal environments is a key parameter in many high precision measurements. Here, we propose a method to stabilize the sensitivity of a highly sensitive and low noise magnetic sensor based on a planar Hall Effect crossed junction. The stability is achieved by controlling the interplay between Zeeman energy, exchange bias energy, and anisotropy energy as a function of the temperature of the sensor stack comprising a trilayer structure NiFe/Cu/IrMn (10/0.12/10 nm). The high thermal stability of the sensor sensitivity of 4.5 ± 0.15 × 10−3 V/A/T/K is achieved when the external magnetic field is set around ±2 ± 0.04 mT and the applied current is fixed at 20 mA in the temperature range of 110 K–360 K. This method improves the magnetic sensor detection by about an order of magnitude, enabling its deployment in various research fields, particularly to study magnetic properties of small quantities of magnetic materials toward the detection of single magnetic objects, which was impossible before.

Abstract

We have investigated the sensitivity of a planar Hall resistance sensor as a function of the ring radius in the trilayer structure Ta(3)/IrMn(10)/Cu(0.2)/NiFe(10)/Ta(3) (nm). The diagonal components of magnetoresistivity tensor in rectangular prism corresponding to anisotropic magnetoresistance are few ten times larger than that of off-diagonal component corresponding to planar Hall resistance. However, it is noteworthy that the resultant contribution is governed by the off-diagonal components due to the cancellation of diagonal components in the self-balanced bridge configuration. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the sensitivity varies linearly with the ring radius. In multi-ring architecture, the circumference can be increased to a limit, which consequently enhances sensitivity. We found the sensitivity of the investigated 7-rings planar Hall to be more than 600 μV/Oe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The underlying principle for magnetic biosensing has been elaborately described at first with the examples of different magnetoresistive sensing techniques. Then, the planar Hall resistance sensor has been shown as one of the best sensors for conducting magnetic bead detection experiments. While making an in depth study on the capabilities of a PHR sensor in different configurations and geometries, the sequence of narration ultimately has lead towards describing the evolution of hybrid AMR and PHR ring sensor in spin valve configuration with optimized performance for precise detection of even single magnetic bead. Biofunctionalization experiments were also conducted to ensure that our PHR sensor is capable of biomolecule recognition. Therefore, our present sensor can be used to promote for the biomolecular recognition and other molecular interaction detection. This novel planar Hall effect based sensor has been further demonstrated that it can be easily integrated into a lab-on-a-chip and is feasible for bead detection in the sensing current generated magnetic field (without the external applied magnetic field) so as to ensure it an efficient tool for high sensitive biomolecules recognition.
