Childhood adversity is predictive of poorer health and behavioral health outcomes in adulthood. Males and females are known to experience different types of childhood adversity, with females experiencing more sexual and emotional harm in childhood. Latent class analysis (LCA) has been used to identify patterns among types of childhood adversity. These studies have constructed class structures using single gender or blended gender samples. Class structures based on blended gender samples, however, may misrepresent the nuances of gender-specific adversity histories through averaging, potentially distorting the relative need for gender-specific types of intervention. This study investigated whether latent class structures of childhood abuse are equivalent for incarcerated males and females. Our sample included 4,204 residents (3,986 males, 218 females) drawn from a single prison system. Residents completed an hour-long audio computer-assisted self-interview that included questions on 10 types of childhood abuse, depression, and anxiety symptoms, the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and Criminal Sentiments Scale-Modified (CSS-M). Overall, female residents were both more likely to experience childhood abuse and have more extensive victimization experiences. Small subgroups of males, however, had even more extensive victimization experiences. Abuse patterns for males and females, while optimally clustering in four classes, are rather unique, especially for higher abuse classes, in terms of distribution of membership and types of abuse. These differences may matter in terms of identifying the relative need for therapeutic intervention among incarcerated males and females and targeting those interventions in ways that reflect the gradient and density of therapeutic need. The next step is to test whether using blended or gendered latent class structures matters in terms of predicting outcomes, such as prison-based behavioral health problems, suicidality, and victimization.

Our aim was to investigate the psychosocial outcomes of the donors whose recipients died after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Forty-one donors whose recipients died and 87 donors whose recipients were alive after LDLT at Inonu University Liver Transplantation Institute between 2012 and 2017 were included into the study. Demographic data form, Beck anxiety scale, Beck depression scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Decision Regret Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and general evaluation questionnaire (24 questions) were used in all donors by face to face questioning. In addition to the descriptive statistical analysis, chi-square and student’s t tests were used to evaluate the differences between the groups. Recipient death after living donor liver transplantation is a factor that negatively increases the level of anxiety, depression, hopelessness levels, and repentance of donors, and adversely affects the psychological growth of the donors after donation experience. Regular follow-up of the donors should be done psychosocially in the postoperative period, especially the donors whose recipients have died should be followed up more frequently, and their support and treatment should be provided when needed. The donors should also be informed about the psychosocial implications of operative management and postoperative period. More studies are needed regarding the psychosocial problems of the donors.

The current descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the correlation between perceived social support and hopelessness of 609 Syrian refugees age ≥16 residing in Gaziantep City, Turkey. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation analyses were used to analyze the data. Syrian refugees had high levels of hopelessness, particularly motivation loss, and moderate levels of perceived social support. As perceived social support increased, hopelessness, feelings, expectations about the future, and motivation loss decreased. In accordance with these results, hopes of Syrian refugees for the future can be increased by improving their social support system. BACKGROUND Both demoralization and depression are common forms of psychological distress in cancer patients. This study aimed to investigate the severity of demoralization in Chinese cancer patients and to explore the factors influencing depression and demoralization and their effects on quality of life to better understand the differences and the relationship between demoralization and depression. METHODS Cross-sectional study design, in-patients sequentially recruited from a tertiary-level cancer hospital in Beijing between January 2016 and April 2016 completed Mandarin version of Demoralization Scale (DS-MV), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Revised Life Orientation Test (CLOT-R), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and the 12-items Short Form Health Survey, version 2 (SF-12 V2) and provided socio-demographic and clinical information. RESULTS 296/424 (70.0%) of patients completed questionnaires. The mean score of DS is 30.4 (SD = 13.0). There are 28% (83/296) patients who experienced a low level of depression but a high level of demoralization. Resignation medical coping method (b = 0.279, P < .001), hopelessness (b = 0.492, P < .001), positive life orientation (b = -0.170, P < .001), and education level (b = -0.132, P < .001) were found to be predictors of demoralization, while only resignation medical coping method (b = 0.373, P < .001) and hopelessness (b = 0.350, P < .001) were found to be predictors of depression. Depression is a mediator between demoralization and physical aspects of quality of life (γ = -0.1604, LLCI = -0.244, ULCI = -0.080). CONCLUSION Demoralization is a prevalent psychiatric problem in Chinese cancer patients, and a large proportion of patients had low depression but high demoralization. Therefore, screening for demoralization in Chinese oncology practice is essential. A positive life orientation was found to be protective against demoralization.

Preliminary evidence suggests the efficacy of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to reduce clinical symptoms in Partial Hospital (PH) programs. However, less is known about DBT in Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs, or in PH to IOP step-down models. The current study examined changes in depression, anxiety, stress, hopelessness, and mindfulness skills acquisition, from intake and discharge data of clients at a southeastern behavioral health clinic in the United States. The sample included 146 clients, 65.75% female (ages M = 33.88, SD = 12.34), who attended either a DBT-PH, -IOP, or -PH to IOP step-down program. Participants completed the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and Five Facets of Mindfulness Questionnaire Short Form (FFMQ-SF). Depression, anxiety, and hopelessness decreased from intake to discharge in the PH program, while all symptoms decreased in the IOP and step-down programs. Mindfulness total scores, and most subscales, increased in each program. Mindfulness skills acquisition predicted decreases in depression and stress in the IOP group, and decreases in depression and hopelessness in the step-down group. Overall, clinical symptoms and mindfulness skills acquisition improved over the course of the DBT-PH and-IOP programs.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently comorbid with borderline personal- ity disorder (BPD). However, few studies have examined how comorbid BPD-ADHD patients, treated or not with methylphenidate (MPH), respond to psychotherapy com- pared to non-comorbid BPD patients. In this perspective, we used a naturalistic study to compare, during a month- long intensive dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), the clinical course of BPD patients and comorbid BPD-ADHD patients who were treated or untreated with MPH. Out of the 158 BPD patients recruited, 59 had adult ADHD as a comorbidity; among these, 29 underwent a treatment with MPH or des-methylphenidate, while the 30 others did not. MPH treatment was given non-randomly and only when ADHD was considered to be hampering the capacity of the subjects to follow the therapy. Patients completed the fol- lowing forms upon admission and after 1 month of treat- ment: the adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v.1.1), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-10), the State-Trait Anger Expression (STAXI), the Beck Depression Inven- tory II (BDI-II), and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. At baseline, comorbid BPD-ADHD patients showed signifi- cantly higher impulsiveness than BPD patients. In the entire sample, there was a significant decrease in all dimensions ranging from small to large effect sizes during the 4-week intensive DBT. BPD-ADHD patients who were undergoing MPH treatment showed a significantly improved response to DBT treatment for Trait-State Anger scores, motor impulsiveness, depression severity, and ADHD severity, when compared to those without stimulant medication. This study outlines the importance of sys- tematically screening BPD patients for ADHD, since a MPH-based treatment will improve the symptoms of patients who are comorbid for BPD and ADHD. Due to the non-random allocation of subjects, more severely affected patients were more readily placed on MPH; this suggests that the more severe the ADHD symptoms, the greater the chance for the patient of being treated.

OBJECTIVES There are currently 1,308,327 immigrants in removal proceedings, over 80% of whom are Latinx (TRAC, 2021b). This study examined the relation among putative protective markers (i.e. social support, religious support, and legal support) and the emotional and physical well-being of Latinx individuals facing removal proceedings. HYPOTHESES We hypothesized that increased social support, religious support, and legal support would buffer the negative relations between hopelessness, poor self-efficacy, and well-being measures (depression, anxiety, stress, mental well-being, somatic symptoms, and physical well-being). METHOD Participants (N = 157; 31.2% men, M age = 33.4 years) had an active immigration court case in Texas and completed a demographic questionnaire, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Multi-Faith Religious Support Scale, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, and Short Form Health Survey-12. RESULTS Higher levels of hopelessness and poor self-efficacy were associated with more negative well-being outcomes, while social support was associated with more positive well-being outcomes. Contrary to hypotheses, religious support and legal support served as risk markers independently, while legal support interacted with hopelessness, such that decreased legal support was associated with higher mental well-being at lower levels of hopelessness and interacted with poor self-efficacy, such that increased legal support was associated with poorer mental well-being at lower levels of self-efficacy. All effect sizes were small (rsp2 = .04 to .16). CONCLUSIONS Targeting hopelessness and poor self-efficacy while promoting social support may help mental health professionals improve the well-being of immigrants in removal proceedings. Heart failure is a chronic disease that impairs the quality of life and leads to several psychiatric disorders, especially depression and anxiety. The present study intended to investigate suicide risk and its association with depression, hopelessness and self-esteem in patients with chronic heart failure. 32 patients with chronic heart failure and 32 healthy control subjects with similar sociodemographic attributes were included in the present case control study. Sociodemographic data form, Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE) and Suicide Probability Scale (SPS) were applied to all subjects. It was determined that the BHS (11.4 ± 3.74 vs. 4.8 ± 4.02, p 0.001), BDI (22.2 ± 11.9 vs 9.2 ± 7.6, p 0.001) and SPS (67.6 ± 15.9 vs 59.2 ± 10.9, p = 0.018) scores were statistically higher in the patient group when compared to the control group. It was also established that the self-esteem of subjects in the patient group was lower when compared to the control (p 0.001). A positive correlation was determined between the SPS and BHS, and BDI and RSE scores (p 0.001). Suicide risk was higher among the patients with heart failure when compared to the control group. This increase in suicide risk significantly correlated with high levels of hopelessness, depression, and low self-esteem in the patient group. Heart failure is one of the chronic diseases that increases suicidal ideation. The identification of suicidal ideation in the present patient group facilitated both the prevention of suicidal behavior and positive contribution to treatment.

Background:Older adults represent the segment of population most exposed to the risk of suicide nearly everywhere in the world. Previous studies showed that hopelessness was an important risk factor for suicide.Aims:This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the four-item Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS-4) in psychological autopsy study among Chinese rural elderly.Method:Two-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used to select research sites. Using case-control psychological autopsy study, face-to-face interviews were conducted to collected information.Results:A total of 242 elderly suicide deaths and 242 matched living comparisons were investigated, including 135 males and 107 females for each group. Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) of the controls were 0.682-0.713. The median score of BHS-4 among suicides was significantly higher than that among controls. The corrected correlation coefficient between items and total score were 0.184-0.723. Cronbach’s Alphas coefficient was 0.834. Only one common factor was precipitated by exploratory factor analysis and the cumulative variance contribution rates were 59.558% for suicides and 52.722% for living controls. The correlation coefficient between hopelessness and depression were 0.481 among suicide death and 0.617 among living controls.Conclusion:The information provided by the informants through psychological autopsy method had high reliability to reflect the actual situation of suicides and controls. BHS-4 has good reliability and validity among Chinese rural elderly suicides. It is suitable for psychological autopsy study among Chinese rural elderly.

Self-harm is a major public health issue in Pakistan, yet the characteristics of those who self-harm are under-explored. This is a secondary analysis from a large randomized control trial on the prevention of self-harm, exploring demographic, clinical and psychological characteristics of people who self-harm in Pakistan. A total of 221 participants with a history of self-harm were recruited from medical wards of three major hospitals in Karachi. The Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and Suicide Attempt Self Injury Interview (SASII) assessment scales were completed. The sample consisted predominantly of females (68.8%) in their 20′s. Interpersonal difficulties were most commonly reported as the main antecedent to the self-harm, followed by financial difficulties. Participants had high severity scores on BSI, BDI and BHS. Pesticide and insecticide use were (n = 167, 75.6%) the most common methods of self-harm. The findings indicate that some characteristics of those who self-harm in Pakistan are comparable to other populations. This may raise the possibility of common causal mechanisms and processes. Future research needs to examine the efficacy of interventions targeting these risk factors in reducing rates of self-harm and thus suicide.

Previous findings have shown that depression in advanced stages of cancer is associated with hopelessness and frequently with wishes for hastened death. The current study tries to investigate the relationship between hopelessness and desire for hastened death and if depression may be a moderator and/or mediator role in patients with advanced cancer. The participants were 102 patients with advanced cancer which they completed the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Greek Schedule of Attitudes towards Hastened Death (G-SAHD), and the Greek Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Depression was highly correlated with hopelessness and desire for hastened death. Mediation analyses revealed that hopelessness influenced desire for hastened death as well as indirectly by its effect on depression. Similarly, depression was found as moderator in the relationship between hopelessness with desire for hastened death. Hopelessness and desire for hastened death in patients with advanced cancer should be diagnosed and treated by taking into consideration the optimum care of depression as a priority in palliative care.

Objective To examine the role of chronobiological dysrhythmicity in suicidal ideation and behaviors and its relation with hopelessness. Methods One hundred twenty-seven patients (77 females, mean age of 47.4 ± 12.5 years) with a major depressive episode and bipolar disorder (BD) type I or II (according to Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 assessment) were recruited in 2019 and assessed for depressive and manic symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Young Mania Rating Scale) and with the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Scale for Suicide Ideation. Univariate regression and mediation analyses were performed. Results Forty-one patients (32.3%) showed clinically significant suicidal ideation and were more frequently affected by BD type I (P = .029) with mixed features (P = .022). Compared to nonsuicidal individuals, they had significantly more depressive symptoms (P = .019), higher emotional component of hopelessness (P = .037), and higher dysrhythmicity of sleep (P = .009), activities (P = .048), and social life (P = .019). Passive and active suicidal ideation and suicidal plans were best predicted by dysrhythmicity of sleep and social life. Dysrhythmicity of sleep and social life mediated the direct effect of depressive symptoms on passive and active suicidal ideation and also of active ideation on suicidal plans. The emotional component of hopelessness was related to dysrhythmicity of social life and mediated its effect on suicidal plans (P = .010). Conclusions Chronobiological alterations directly contributed to passive and active suicidal ideation and to suicidal preparation, with a key role of dysrhythmicity of sleep, activities, and social life. Chronobiological alterations also impacted the emotional component of hopelessness, hence indirectly contributing to suicidal ideations and plans. These findings call for the systematic screening of these dysrhythmicity dimensions when considering suicidal risk in individuals with BD.

Hope is essential in rehabilitating persons with schizophrenia, though scales to measure hope are not appropriate for this population. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the psychometric properties of the Schizophrenia Hope Scale-9 (SHS-9) using data from 83 people with schizophrenia in four mental health centers and 762 healthy persons from two universities in South Korea. The total SHS-9 score is calculated by adding all items&rsquo, scores and ranges from 0 to 18. The mean (standard deviation) SHS-9 score of the participants with schizophrenia and healthy participants was 11.53 (SD = 4.78) and 14.78 (SD = 3.19), respectively. Lower scores indicate a lower level of hope. The Cronbach&rsquo, s alpha coefficient was 0.92 with a four-week test-retest reliability of 0.89. Criterion-related construct validity was established by examining the correlation between the SHS-9 and the State-Trait Hope Inventory scores. Divergent validity was identified through a negative relationship of SHS-9 with the Beck Hopelessness Scale. In persons with schizophrenia and healthy college students, Bartlett&rsquo, s test of sphericity yielded &chi, 2 = 465.03 (p &lt, 0.001) and &chi, 2 = 2679.24 (p &lt, 0.001) respectively. The values of the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy were 0.89 and 0.90, respectively. The construct validity of the SHS-9 was confirmed through principal component analysis with extraction methods, which resulted in a one-factor solution, accounting for 61.83% of the total item variance. This study provides evidence for the validity and reliability of the SHS-9, therefore, it could be used to study the relationships between hope and other variables (e.g., depression and recovery) in persons with schizophrenia and measure the effect of psychosocial interventions on their hope.

The effects of caregiver burden during the inpatient rehabilitation period have not yet been investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the burden on stroke survivors' caregivers during the inpatient rehabilitation period, and to compare the associations of robot-assisted gait training and conventional therapy with caregiver burden. Our randomized, crossover, prospective study included 63 stroke survivors and their caregivers, who were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The patients in group I received robot-assisted gait training for 2 weeks, followed by conventional therapy for a further 2 weeks. The patients in group II received conventional therapy for 2 weeks followed by robot-assisted gait training for a further 2 weeks. The caregiver burden inventory, beck depression index, and beck hopelessness scale were administered to the caregivers at day 0, on the “switch day” (day 15), and day 30. Before inpatient rehabilitation, 18 (35%) of the caregivers had somewhat elevated scores on the caregiver burden inventory; however, at the end of rehabilitation, 42 (66.6%) of the caregivers were in a high-burden state. Background Little research has been conducted that compares suicide cases with and without schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to identify demographic, personal, social, relational, and psychological characteristics among suicides identified posthumously with schizophrenia compared to those without. Methods The DSM-IV was used to independently assess the presence of schizophrenia among suicide cases by two psychiatrists. Data on risk factors was collected through a psychological autopsy method, which included structured interviews of two informants for each suicide case (a family member and a close friend). Interview questions included demographic characteristics, suicide risk factors, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, Dickman's Impulsivity Inventory, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Hamilton Depression Scale and the Duke Social Support Inventory. Results The prevalence of schizophrenia was 9.69% among suicide cases in this sample. The schizophrenia suicide group was more likely to be female, older, in poorer physical health, suffer from chronic disease, suffer other psychological disorders, and have a family history of psychological disorders compared to those not diagnosed schizophrenia. Other important risk factors included more frequent past suicide attempts, increased levels of depression and anxiety, lower levels of impulsivity, lower help seeking from friends, and lower social interaction social support. Conclusions There is a notable link between schizophrenia and suicide in China. Identification of social, personal, relational, and psychological risk factors could beneficially guide attempts to improve future preventive measures against suicide among those with schizophrenia in China.

Objective The cognitive theory of suicide postulates that hopelessness is an essential precondition for suicidal ideation in patients with depressive disorder . However, the explanatory power and predictive value of hopelessness for suicidal ideation remain uncertain. Methods From 1997 to 2007, patients with depressive disorder who were cohorts from the Vantaa Depression Studies (n = 406) completed the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Perceived Social Support Scale-Revised (PSSS-R), and Eysenck Personality Inventory-Q (EPI-Q) at baseline, 6 and 18 months, and 5 years. We conducted a mixed-effects generalized linear regression and clustered receiver-operating characteristics analysis to test how well BDI and BHS predict severe suicidal ideation within and between patients. Results BHS predicted clinically significant suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR] = 2.8), explaining 13.1% of between-patient and and 3.5% of within-patient variance of SSI. Adjusting for the fixed effect of BDI removed a substantial part of the effect of BHS on SSI (adjusted OR = 1.38, P = .018). BAI moderated the effect of BHS on SSI, whereas EPI-Q and PSSS-R did not. BDI detected suicidal ideation more accurately (area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve [AUC] = 0.846) than BHS (AUC = 0.754). Conclusions In patients with depressive disorder, hopelessness explains suicidal ideation, but largely because it covaries with depressive symptoms. The role of hopelessness as a central determinant of suicidal ideation in depression may have been overestimated. Symptoms of anxiety moderate the association between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Severity of depressive symptoms may predict suicidal ideation more accurately than hopelessness.

OBJECTIVE Suicidal ideation is common in cancer patients and may be associated with hopelessness, demoralization, and depression. This study aims to investigate the serial multiple mediation of demoralization and depression in the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation in cancer patients. METHODS A total of 244 cancer patients were investigated by using the following standardized self-reported questionnaires: self-rating idea of suicide scale, Beck hopelessness scale, demoralization scale-Mandarin version, and patient health questionnaire depression scale-9. The mediation hypothesis was tested with a serial multiple mediation model (PROCESS model 6). An exploratory graph analysis was performed to detect the correlations among the dimensions of the mental conditions measured by these instruments. The objective of this study was to assess the quality of life and psychological wellbeing of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) in Chile, and to identify other associated factors. The study enrolled 68 patients aged between 18 and 72 (median 29), 35 being females. They completed a questionnaire, which included a quality of life assessment tool (the Medical Outcome Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey), a number of psychological scales (the General Health Questionnaire, the Basic Psychological Needs Scales and the Beck Hopelessness Scale), a socioeconomic survey, and some clinical data. CHD patients reported worse scores in those scales assessing physical dimensions of quality of life (physical function (70.5), physical role functioning (64), vitality (65.3)), and general quality of life (58.6), than in emotional or social dimensions. Chronotype preference and lower sleep quality in university students can influence mental health. Individuals with evening chronotypes have a high risk of mental health problems, including depressive symptoms. However, the underlying mechanisms are still under investigation. Hopelessness is composed of negative feelings and thoughts about the future and is closely related to depressive symptomatology. The aim of the study was to determine whether reduced sleep quality and hopelessness mediate the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms in a student sample, which was evaluated cross-sectionally. A total of 339 Turkish students (53.7% female, mean age 22.18 ± 1.79 y) completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Mediation analysis showed no significant direct relationship between eveningness and depressive symptoms. The relationship between eveningness and depressive symptoms was mediated by hopelessness, but not by subjective sleep quality (effect = − 0.03, SE: 0.01, CI: −0.04, −0.02). Better knowledge of the relationship between hopelessness and eveningness might form the basis of a more specific approach to the prevention of depression in evening types. © 2020, © 2020 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Several studies have consistently related psychological pain to suicide risk. Psychache, according to Shneidman's perspective and measured by the Psychache Scale has been confirmed as an important variable in risk prediction. In the present study, we evaluated psychache as a construct related to suicide risk using data obtained with the Portuguese version of the Psychache Scale translated from the original English version. A community sample of 628 individuals responded to the Portuguese version of the Psychache Scale, the Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire-Revised, the CES-D Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Suicide Ideation Questionnaire. Results supported the unidimensional scoring of the Psychache scale, its ability to differentiate between individuals at-risk for suicide from individuals not at-risk, its relationship with different, but related, constructs and its ability to predict suicide ideation.

To promptly identify mental suffering in low-risk prostate cancer (LRPC) patients, vulnerable to over- and undertreatment, we evaluated the correlation of rapid emotional thermometers (ET) with multidimensional validated structured questionnaires. At diagnosis, consecutive LRPC patients underwent five ET domains: emotional suffering, anxiety, depression (DT), revolt and need for help and multidimensional questionnaires: beck anxiety inventory (BAI), beck depression inventory (BDI), beck hopelessness scale, SF36 (physical functioning PF, role limitations due to physical health RP, bodily pain BP, general health perceptions GH, vitality VT, social functioning SF, role limitations due to emotional problems RE and general mental health MH), international index of erectile function and international prostate symptom score (IPSS). Among 30 included patients, mean age 67.4 y (52–74), 20 days after the diagnosis (15–30), mean time to obtain ET 27 s (15–57) and all questionnaires 36.7 min (31–49), ETs showed moderate/strong Spearman correlation among themselves. DT domain displayed the best correlation to most of the multidimensional validated structured questionnaires: moderate to BDI, SF-36 (PF, GH, VT, SF, RE, MH) and IPSS and strong to BAI. DT revealed the best correlation to validated structured questionnaires of diverse dimensions with clear potential for quick screening of patients with psychological suffering and in need of further evaluation and support.

Assessing the recovery ability of individuals who have attempted suicide is crucial for psychiatric health nurses. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a psychometric Suicidal Recovery Ability Scale (SRAS). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that three subscales with 15 items best fit the data. The global SRAS score showed significant negative correlation with the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) score. The Cronbach's α and test-retest reliability scores for the global SRAS and the subscales all exceeded 0.70. Nurses can use the SRAS to assess the recovery ability of individuals who have attempted suicide and provide proper care to help them.

Background The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) has been the most frequently used instrument for the measurement of hopelessness in the past 40 years. Only recently has it officially been translated into German. The psychometric properties and factor structure of the BHS have been cause for intensive debate in the past. Methods Based on a representative sample of the German population (N = 2450) item analysis including item sensitivity, item-total correlation and item difficulty was performed. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) for several factor solutions from the literature were performed. Multiple group factor analysis was performed to assess measurement invariance. Construct validity was assessed via the replication of well-established correlations with concurrently assessed measures. Results Most items exhibited adequate properties. Items #4, #8 and #13 exhibited poor item characteristics– each of these items had previously received negative evaluations in international studies. A one-dimensional factor solution, favorable for the calculation and interpretation of a sum score, was regarded as adequate. A bi-factor model with one content factor and two method factors (defined by positive/negative item coding) resulted in an excellent model fit. Cronbach’s alpha in the current sample was .87. Hopelessness, as measured by the BHS, significantly correlated in the expected direction with suicidal ideation (r = .36), depression (r = .53) and life satisfaction (r = −.53). Strict measurement invariance could be established regarding gender and depression status. Due to limited research regarding the interpretation of fit indices with dichotomous data, interpretation of CFA results needs to remain tentative. Conclusion The BHS is a valid measure of hopelessness in various subgroups of the general population. Future research could aim at replicating these findings using item response theory and cross-cultural samples. A one-dimensional bi-factor model seems appropriate even in a non-clinical population. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the musculoskeletal pain distribution, quality of life, and the hopelessness level in mothers with disabled children in different ambulation levels. Methods: This study included a total of 177 mothers (mean age: 36.1 ± 6.5 years) of children with disabilities. The mothers were divided into 3 different groups according to the ambulation level of their disabled children: Ambulatory children (Group 1), partially ambulatory children (Group 2) and non-ambulatory children (Group 3). Musculoskeletal pain distribution (body diagram) and pain intensity (The Visual Analogue Scale), four quality of life parameters (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Health-Related Quality of Life -4 Questionnaire) and hopelessness level (Beck Hopelessness Scale) were evaluated in all mothers. Results: The results of our study showed that musculoskeletal pain was most common (79.1%) in the mothers of disabled children. The frequency and severity of back, shoulder and elbow pain in the mothers, number of activity limitation days and hopelessness level were found to increase significantly as the ambulation level in the child decreased (p< 0.05). Conclusions: The risk of musculoskeletal pain, participation in daily life and hopelessness level in the mothers increased as the ambulation level of the disabled children decreased. © 2018 - IOS Press and the authors. BACKGROUND: Globally, suicide is the most important cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults. The factor that correlates most significantly with suicide is hopelessness. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to explore the psychometric adaptation of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) as a suicide risk evaluation tool among Nigerian university students. DESIGN: A total of 554 Nigerian students completed the BHS and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Suicide risk level among them was determined by interviewing them with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Suicidality module. RESULTS: Cronbach’s alpha for the 16-item BHS was 0.87. It exhibited satisfactory concurrent validity with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) Suicidality module and the subscales of the DASS among the students. The 2-factor model of the BHS-16 exhibited satisfactory indices of fitness (goodness of fit index = 0.930; parsimonious goodness of fit index = 0.601; comparative fit index = 0.934; incremental fit index = 0.936; Tucker–Lewis index = 0.910; root mean square error of approximation = 0.059; χ2/ df = 1.9). Receiver operating characteristics curve indicated that the best cutoff score for those categorized as high suicide risk was 7 (sensitivity 0.700, specificity 0.908, AUC = 0.897). CONCLUSIONS: The BHS has satisfactory psychometric properties as a suicide risk screening tool among Nigerian university students.

The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Purpose-In-Life Test (PIL), as well as the age-related differences in meaning in life in women diagnosed with eating disorders. Participants were 250 Spanish women diagnosed with eating disorders who ranged from 12 to 60 years old. Confirmatory Factor Analysis, descriptive analyses, estimation of the internal consistency of the PIL, correlations between the PIL and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Overweight Preoccupation Scale (OPS), and Body Investment Scale (BIS), and age differences were calculated. A 19-item model that showed a good fit and internal consistency, a negative correlation between the PIL and both the BHS and OPS, and a positive correlation with the BIS, as well as significant differences between the adolescents and the mature adults, were found. It would be advisable to increase the inclusion of meaning in life in psychotherapeutic interventions with women diagnosed with eating disorders.

Abstract. Background: A significant number of Korean adolescents have suicidal ideations and it is more prevalent among adolescents than any other age group in Korea. Aims: This study was conducted to attain a better understanding of the contributing factors to suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents. Method: We recruited 569 high school students in Grades 10 and 11 in Pyeongtaek, Korea. The Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation was used to measure suicidal ideation as the outcome variable. The Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, the School Related Stress Scale, the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire, and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance questions were used to measure thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, hopelessness, school-related stress, bullying, and previous suicidal behaviors, respectively. Data analyses included descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Results: The findings suggest that perceived burdensomeness, hopelessness, school-related stress, and previous suicidal behaviors have significant direct effects on suicidal ideation. Hopelessness fully mediated the relation between thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation, and partially mediated between perceived burdensomeness, school-related stress, and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These findings provide more specific directions for a multidimensional suicide prevention program in order to be successful in reducing suicide rates among Korean adolescents.

Background Whereas most studies have focused on how the religious beliefs positively interfere with the presence or execution of suicidal behaviors, few have identified differences among religious beliefs and how these can not only be consider as a protective factor for suicide, but also as a variable that influences the expression of the suicidal related behaviors. Objective To provide evidence about the effect of religious practices and beliefs on suicidal behavior in cancer patients in Colombia. Methods This is a hospital-based cross-sectional study with a sample of 132 patients with cancer. Socio-demographic data were measured, in which the religious affiliation was included. The instruments used include the Scale of Suicidal Ideation (SSI), the item 9 of Beck Depression Scale (BDI-IA) and the Beck Hopelessness Inventory (BHS). Results In our study, 93% of the patients had advanced stages of cancer, where 51.52% of them were in stage IV. Cancer patients who reported non-Catholic Christians were 3 and 4 times more likely to have some manifestation of suicidal behavior. Conclusions It is recognized in non-Catholic Christians patients a greater chance to express suicidal ideation, which could be related to their level of suicide acceptability. It is considered that religion and their perception of death affects the expression and acceptance of suicidal ideation, reason why it is necessary more research on the effect of different religions on suicidal behavior, in order to include these aspects in the patient intervention.

Background Chinese rural elderly are at higher risk of committing suicide. However, little is known about the suicidal ideation (SI) of institutional elderly residents in rural China. Methods 250 participants aged 60 or above living in Chinese rural nursing homes were recruited. Data were collected on subjects' SI, social-demographic characters, physical illness and psychological factors. Univariate comparisons and path analysis were conducted then. Results 19.5% (40/205) of the participants reported a current SI. Hopelessness and depression had significant direct impacts on SI, and self-esteem and loneliness can impact SI through the mediating of depression and hopelessness. Visiting frequency of children, number of physical illnesses and social activities can also affect SI through the mediating of loneliness or self-esteem. Conclusion As the first study on path analysis of SI of rural institutional elderly, the findings are significant. All these factors in our model should be considered when interventions are being conducted.

We examined the adaptation of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) as a subjective suicide risk assessment tool in detecting Nigerian patients with schizophrenia who are at a high risk of suicide.Schizophrenia patients (211) completed the BHS in addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire. They were objectively interviewed with the suicidality module of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) as the 'gold standard', against which the criterion validity of the BHS was examined.The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve of the 20-item BHS scale at a total cut-off score of 9 (sensitivity 0.889, specificity 0.916) against the patients' MINI Suicidality Module risk categorisation had an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.928-0.987), while, the four-item BHS scale demonstrated a ROC curve with an AUC of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.868-0.966) at a cut-off score of 1 (sensitivity 1.000, specificity 0.832).The BHS has proven to be valid in terms of its sensitivity and specificity in the identification of the high suicidal risk Nigerian schizophrenia outpatients.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the factors predicting suicide recovery and to provide guidance for healthcare professionals when caring for individuals who have attempted suicide. BACKGROUND The high rate of suicide is a global health problem. Suicide prevention has become an important issue in contemporary mental health. Most suicide research has focused on suicidal prevention and care. There is a lack of research on the factors predicting suicidal recovery. DESIGN A cross-sectional design was adopted. METHODS A correlational study with a purposive sample of 160 individuals from a suicide prevention centre in southern Taiwan was conducted. The questionnaires included the Brief Symptom Rating Scale-5, Suicidal Recovery Assessment Scale and Beck Hopelessness Scale. Descriptive statistics and linear regressions were used for the analysis. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 40.2 years. Many participants were striving to make changes to create a more stable and fulfilling life, had an improved recovery from suicide and had a good ability to adapt or solve problems. Objective Evidence of feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of home-based telebehavioral health (HBTBH) needs to be established before adoption of HBTBH in the military health system can occur. The purpose of this randomized controlled noninferiority trial was to compare the safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of HBTBH to care provided in the traditional in-office setting among military personnel and veterans. Method One hundred and twenty-one U.S. military service members and veterans were recruited at a military treatment facility and a Veterans Health Administration hospital. Participants were randomized to receive 8 sessions of behavioral activation treatment for depression (BATD) either in the home via videoconferencing (VC) or in a traditional in-office (same room) setting. Participants were assessed at baseline, midtreatment (4 weeks), posttreatment (8 weeks), and 3 months posttreatment. Results Mixed-effects modeling results with Beck Hopelessness Scale and Beck Depression Inventory II scores suggested relatively strong and similar reductions in hopelessness and depressive symptoms for both groups; however, noninferiority analyses failed to reject the null hypothesis that in-home care was no worse than in-office treatment based on these measures. There were not any differences found between treatment groups in regards to treatment satisfaction. Safety procedures were successfully implemented, supporting the feasibility of home-based care. Conclusion BATD can be feasibly delivered to the homes of active duty service members and veterans via VC. Although both multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are demyelinating diseases, their psychiatric disturbances may differ given differences in the neurological manifestations. We used subjective and objective measurements to compare the psychiatric disturbances in patients with MS and NMO. Psychiatric disturbances were assessed in 24 MS and 35 NMO patients using the Beck Hopelessness Scale, Symptom Checklist-95 and the brief version of World Health Organization Quality of Life. Personality was assessed using the Big Five Inventory-10. Disease-related function was assessed using the Fatigue Severity Scale, Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, and the Global Assessment of Function. Positivity offset (PO) and negativity bias (NB) and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured using a modified implicit affect test and photoplethysmograph, respectively. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance with age and sex as covariates. MS patients had higher levels of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive–compulsiveness, aggression, paranoia, interpersonal sensitivity, self-regulation problems, stress vulnerability, and lower psychological quality of life (QOL) compared with NMO patients. The PO and NB and HRV values were not significantly different between groups. However, NMO patients had lower QOL, and higher levels of hopelessness, suicidality, and fatigue than the normal range. Disease duration was associated with hopelessness in NMO patients and with several psychiatric disturbances, but not hopelessness, in MS patients. Subjective psychiatric disturbances were more severe in patients with MS than in those with NMO, whereas PO and NB and HRV in patients with NMO were comparable with those of MS patients. Our findings highlight the need for different clinical approaches to assess and treat psychiatric disturbances in patients with MS and NMO.

Background A substantial increase in rates of suicide worldwide, especially among late adolescents and young adults, has been observed. It is important to identify specific risk and protective factors for suicide-related behaviors among late adolescents and young adults. Identifying specific factors across the masses, not only in the Western, but also in the Asian context, helps researchers develop empirically informed intervention methods for the management of protective and risk factors of suicide. Methods In the current study, 2074 students (706 males), filled out the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, with subscales of Search for Meaning (MLQ-S) and Presence of Meaning (MLQ-P); the Future Disposition Inventory-24 (FDI-24), with subscales of Positive Focus (PF), Suicide Orientation (SO), and Negative Focus (NF); and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS). These scales measure protective and risk factors that are linked to suicidal behaviors; while suicidal behaviors were measured by the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R). Mediation analyses were performed to test the models with both the MLQ-S and MLQ-P as the mediators between a) hopelessness, as measured by BHS and suicidal behaviors; and b) PF, SO, and NF, as measured by FDI-24, and suicidal behaviors. Results We found that only MLQ-P mediated the relation between hopelessness and suicidal behaviors; while both MLQ-P and MLQ-S mediated PF, SO, and NF (as measured by FDI-24), and suicidal behaviors, respectively. Conclusion Meaning in life, including both the presence of meaning in life and search for meaning, can be good protective factors against suicidal behaviors.

OBJECTIVE This study tested the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for major depressive disorder (MDD) among prisoners. It is the first fully powered randomized trial of any treatment (pharmacological or psychosocial) targeting MDD among incarcerated individuals. METHOD One hundred eighty-one male (n = 117) and female (n = 64) prisoners from prison facilities in 2 states were randomized to group IPT (delivered by master's-level and nonspecialist prison counselors) for MDD plus prison treatment as usual (TAU) or to TAU alone. Participants' average age was 39 (range = 20-61); 20% were African American and 19% were Hispanic. Outcomes assessed at posttreatment and 3-month follow-up included depressive symptoms (primary; assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression), suicidality (assessed with the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation and Beck Hopelessness Scale), in-prison functioning (i.e., enrollment in correctional programs; discipline reports; aggression/victimization; and social support), remission from MDD, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. RESULTS IPT reduced depressive symptoms, hopelessness, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and increased rates of MDD remission relative to prison TAU alone. Effects on hopelessness were particularly strong. Cost per patient was $2,054 including costs for IPT training and supervision or $575 without these costs. For providers running their second or subsequent IPT group, cost per additional week in remission from MDD (relative to TAU alone) was $524 ($148 excluding training and supervision costs, which would not be needed for established programs). CONCLUSIONS IPT is effective and cost-effective and we recommend its use for MDD among prisoners. It is currently the only treatment for MDD evaluated among incarcerated individuals. Objective: The purpose of the present study was threefold: first, to analyse the psychometric properties of a 10‐item Spanish version of the Purpose in Life Test, which assesses meaning in life (MiL), in a sample of community adolescents; second, to analyse the differences between the age and gender groups; and third, to analyse whether MiL buffers the relationship between emotional dysregulation and hopelessness. Method: Participants were 1,599 adolescents from 12 to 19 years old, M = 15.69, SD = 2.14. The Purpose in Life Test‐10 Items, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale were used. Results: A nine‐item version showed good fit, psychometric properties (internal consistency, construct, and concurrent validity), and factorial invariance across gender and age (12-15 years/16-19 years). Difference in MiL between boys and girls was not significant, whereas between age groups was significant. MiL had a strong buffering effect on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and hopelessness. Discussion: It is desirable to promote the sense of MiL in adolescents. MiL plays a significant and strong mediator role in the relationship between emotional dysregulation and hopelessness, reinforcing the positive role of MiL in mental health and as a resource for facing adversity.

This study was conducted to determine the dietary supplement (DS) use in gastrointestinal symptom management, and its effect on hopelessness levels in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The universe of this cross-sectional study consisted of 132 patients presenting at the polyclinic, while the sample consisted of 127 patients who meet the inclusion criteria to study. Data were collected using a patient identification form including sociodemographic characteristics and DS use, the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a hearing loss of >30 dB in at least three consecutive frequencies that occurs in 3 days. The aim of this study was to investigate anxiety and depression caused by sudden, idiopathic, one-sided hearing loss. The levels of anxiety and depression in patients with this type of hearing loss were determined using the Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) at the time of the patient's first visit. In total, 56 patients (32 men and 24 women) with a mean age of 32.8 ± 9.9 years (range: 20 to 58 years) were selected as the patient group and 45 individuals without symptoms of anxiety and depression were selected as the control group. The mean pretreatment air-conduction threshold and bone-conduction threshold were 61.1 ± 26.1 and 49.4 ± 13.8, respectively. In the patient group, the pretreatment mean anxiety, depression, and hopelessness scores were 19.5 ± 10.7, 11.6 ± 8.4, and 6.2 ± 4.7, respectively. The control group's mean anxiety, depression, and hopelessness scores were 4.1 ± 3.0, 3.8 ± 2.1, and 1.8 ± 1.0, respectively. For all the tests, the difference between the patient group and the control group was statistically significant (p < 0.001 for all). Hearing levels were not correlated with scores on the BAS, BDI, and Beck Hopelessness Scale (p = 0.1, p = 0.6, and p = 0.4, respectively). In conclusion, the results of this study show that sudden hearing loss can cause anxiety and depression. Questioning patients with sudden hearing loss about symptoms associated with anxiety and depression might be useful, and a psychiatric consultation should be requested if necessary.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to determine the hopelessness and family burden levels of parents who have children with intellectual disabilities. DESIGN This was a descriptive correlational study. METHODS The study was conducted at a specialized education and rehabilitation center in Fethiye, Turkey, using the Sociodemographic Data Form, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Burden Assessment Scale for Families of Children With Intellectual Disabilities, and the study sample included a total of 95 parents of children with intellectual disabilities. FINDINGS A positive relationship was found between the total scores for hopelessness and the family burden including economic burden, perception of inadequacy, social burden, physical burden, emotional burden, and the required time (p < .05). The study found that the higher the level of family burden on parents, the more hopeless families felt. CONCLUSION This study's findings may help rehabilitation nurses to understand the hopelessness of parents and help them find appropriate resources to cope with their burden. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Nurses should be specialized in the field of rehabilitation and, as rehabilitation nurses, be included in providing integrated care, family education, and counseling services for disabled people in Turkey.

Furthermore, fibromyalgia patients are considered a high-risk suicide group. The ideation-to-action framework proposes a set of transdiagnostic psychological factors involved in the development of suicidal ideation. The present study aims to explore the existence of different subgroups according to their vulnerability to suicidal ideation through these transdiagnostic psychological variables and a set of variables typically associated with fibromyalgia. In this cross-sectional study, 151 fibromyalgia patients were assessed through the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale, Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, Defeat Scale, Entrapment Scale, Psychache Scale, and Beck Hopelessness Scale. A K-means cluster analysis identified two clusters, one (45.70%) according to a low vulnerability, and a second (54.30%) with a high vulnerability to suicidal ideation. These clusters showed statistically significant differences in suicidal ideation and suicide risk. However, no differences were observed in most socio-demographic variables. In conclusion, fibromyalgia patients who present a clinical condition characterized by a moderate-high degree of physical dysfunction, overall disease impact and intensity of fibromyalgia-associated symptoms, along with a high degree of perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, defeat, entrapment, psychological pain and hopelessness, form a homogeneous group at high risk for suicidal ideation.

Objective Improving quality of life (QoL) is an important objective in the treatment of schizophrenia. The aim of the current study was to examine to what extent resilience, self-esteem, hopelessness, and psychopathology are correlated with QoL. Method We recruited 52 out-patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV criteria and 77 healthy control subjects from the general community. In patients, psychopathology was quantified by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. The following scales were used in both patients and control subjects: the Berliner Lebensqualitatsprofil, the Resilience Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale to assess QoL, resilience, self-esteem, and hopelessness respectively. Results Patients with schizophrenia presented with significantly less QoL, resilience, self-esteem, and hope compared to healthy control subjects. In patients, QoL correlated moderately with resilience, self-esteem, and hopelessness and weakly with symptoms. With respect to the latter, particularly depression and positive symptoms were negatively correlated with QoL. Conclusion Our results highlight the complex nature of QoL in patients suffering from schizophrenia. They underscore that significant efforts are necessary to enhance resilience and self-esteem and to diminish hopelessness as well as affective and positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

This study focused on resilience in patients who recently received a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD). Psychopathological symptoms, depressive symptoms, and hopelessness were considered as sources of stress in the context of psychosis. Forty-eight SSD patients (mean period between diagnosis and recruitment, 20.79 months) were enrolled. Psychopathological symptoms were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, depression by the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, hopelessness by the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and functioning by the Social and Occupational Functioning Scale. Resilience was evaluated by the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, which was additionally completed by 81 healthy controls. Patients demonstrated less resilience than did healthy participants. Female patients showed higher resilience levels and functioning than did males. High resilience levels were associated with less severe positive symptoms, general psychopathological symptoms, depression, and hopelessness. Apart from negative symptoms, results indicated that resilience may be a potential moderator of functioning. Thus, resilience-oriented interventions might constitute an additional therapeutic approach for SSD patients.

The relationship between hopelessness and depression in predicting suicide-related outcomes varies based on the anticipation of positive versus negative events. In this prospective study of adolescents at elevated risk for suicide, we used two Beck Hopelessness Scale subscales to assess the impact of positive and negative expectations in predicting depression, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behavior over a 2- to 4-year period. In multivariate regressions controlling for depression, suicidal ideation, and negative-expectation hopelessness, positive-expectation hopelessness was the only significant predictor of depressive symptoms and suicidal behavior. Clinical interventions may benefit from bolstering positive expectations and building optimism.

This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) in Greek patients with a recent suicide attempt, the predictive ability of BHS especially in terms of age and the possible effect of the financial crisis on hopelessness as it has been identified as a significant suicide risk factor. The study included a total of 510 individuals, citizens of Athens, Greece. Three hundred and forty individuals (170 attempted suicide patients, and 170 -age and gender- matched healthy individuals used as controls) completed BHS before the financial crisis onset (from 2009 to 2010). A sample of 170 healthy individuals also completed the BHS after the financial crisis onset (from 2013 to 2014), when the impact of the austerity measures was being felt by the Greek society. Indigenous people have high rates of suicide and self-harm compared to other population groups. The aim of this trial was to see if a package of interventions delivered in a culturally appropriate way improved outcomes at one year in Maori who presented with intentional self-harm to emergency departments. Participants were Maori who presented with intentional self-harm to emergency departments in New Zealand. The study design was a double consent Zelen randomised controlled trial. The intervention included regular postcards, problem solving therapy, patient support, risk management, improved access to primary care and cultural assessment in addition to usual care. The control group received usual care. The main outcome measure was the self-rated change in scores on the Beck Hopelessness Scale at one year. 182 people were randomized to the intervention group 95 of whom consented to take part in the study. 183 people were randomized to the control group 72 of whom consented to take part in the study. For those who consented comparing the intervention group with the control group there was a statistically significant greater change in hopelessness scores at 3 months (difference −1.7 95 % CI −3.4 to −0.01, p = 0.05) but not at one year (difference −1.6 95 % CI −3.4 to 0.3, p = 0.11). Maori who consented and received the intervention were also significantly less likely to present to hospital for non-self-harm reasons in the year after the index episode (44.2 vs. 61.1 %, p = 0.03). Those participants randomised to the intervention were less likely to re-present with self-harm at 3 months (10.4 vs. 18 %, p = 0.04) but not at 12 months compared to the control group. In Maori who presented to hospital with intentional self-harm a culturally informed intervention had an effect on hopelessness and re-presentation with self-harm in the short term but not at 12 months. Context Hopelessness is a clinically important construct in patients with advanced illness. Objectives To evaluate the dimensionality, stability, and validity of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) in cancer patients receiving either curative or palliative treatment. Methods Following a longitudinal design, we assessed a sample of cancer patients receiving either curative or palliative treatment ( N = 315) at baseline and at follow-up after 12 months ( N = 158). In addition to hopelessness, we measured depression (Patient Health Questionnaire–9), anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder–7), and health-related quality of life (Short-Form Health Survey–8). We analyzed dimensionality, stability, and construct validity of the BHS using confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory factor analysis and correlational analysis. Results Independent of treatment intention, confirmatory factor analyses resulted in unsatisfactory model fits. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a two-factor solution in both groups receiving curative or palliative treatment. Factor 1 reflected pessimistic/resigned beliefs (Cronbach alpha ≥ 0.85), Factor 2 reflected positive beliefs toward the future (Cronbach alpha = 0.73). Both subscales showed significant associations with anxiety, depression, and decreased health-related quality of life. The factorial structure was partially replicated in patients being reexamined after 12 months (CMIN/DF = 2.130, Standardized Root Mean Square Residual = 0.0716, Comparative Fit Index = 0.904, Tucker-Lewis-Index = 0.883, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.085). Hopelessness scores were significantly higher in patients reporting suicidal ideation according to the Patient Health Questionnaire–9. Conclusion Our study demonstrates psychometric limitations of the BHS in patients receiving both curative and palliative treatment, suggesting reduced utility in cancer populations. Given the clinical importance of the construct, a cancer-specific approach to capture the unique meaning of hopelessness in patients with severe medical illness is recommended.

Background This study was designed to assess the factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and preliminary psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Future Disposition Inventory-24 (FDI-24) in a large sample of Chinese university students. Methods We translated the English version of the Future Disposition Inventory-24 (FDI-24) into Chinese and examined its factor structure, estimates of internal consistency reliability, and psychometric properties in a representative sample of university students. In particular, students (N = 2,074) from two universities in Shandong Province in China were identified using the multi-stage stratified sampling method. In addition to the FDI-24, we collected preliminary data using self-report instruments that included the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and a general sociodemographic information questionnaire. Results The results of the internal consistency reliability estimates were adequate regarding the scores on the three FDI-24 subscales: Cronbach’s alpha = .89–.97, Omega total = .85–.96, Revelle’s Omega total = .88–.96, the greatest lower bound (GLB) = .89–.96 and Coefficient H = .86–.94. Bivariate correlation analyses showed evidence for criterion and discriminant validity. The 3-factor oblique-Geomin-rotation solution accounted for 62.92% of the total variance in the exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) result showed that the 3-factor model provided adequate fit statistics for the sample data: the robust comparative fit index (R-CFI) was .959, robust Tucker Lewis index (R-TLI) was .946 and robust root mean square error of approximation (R-RMSEA) was .090. Conclusion The FDI-24 has a satisfactory factor structure, reliability estimates, and satisfactory evidence of concurrent validity estimates for students with different demographic and cultural backgrounds. The FDI-24 holds promise for use in future investigations with Chinese students.

Persons with epilepsy show a higher risk of suicidal ideation and behavior than the general population. Hopelessness, as a feature of demoralization, is considered an emerging risk factor for suicidal ideation. Psychopathological comorbidity, mainly depression, has to be taken into account to predict suicidal attempts but the relationship between suicidality and epilepsy has been also reported independently from depressive disorders. The aim of the study was to investigate hopelessness in a sample of persons suffering from epilepsy without comorbidity with psychiatric disorders and its association with demographic, social, and clinical variables, putatively predictive of suicidal behaviors. Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) has been used as measure of suicidal ideation in 72 consecutive outpatients afferent to a third level epilepsy center. Exclusion criterion was psychiatric comorbidity evaluated by clinical approach and quantified by Clinical Global Impression (CGI) Scale. Clinical (focus localization, age at onset, number of drugs), demographic, social variables, and intellectual level were considered. Age, age at onset, gender, intellectual level, socioeconomic status, duration of illness and therapy, number of drugs, seizure frequency, and localization of the epileptic focus and side involved were found associated with BHS score increase. In a sample of persons with epilepsy, without psychiatric comorbidity, our data show an association between factors related to the biological pathophysiology and the clinical course of the disease with the sociodemographic status, as a risk factor for suicidal ideation.

This study examines the association between suicide risk and social support in Australian resource sector employees. We included 150 participants, who completed the Beck Hopelessness Scale and MOS-Social Support Survey. Data were analyzed using smallest space analysis and multidimensional scalogram analysis. The analysis identified four distinct regions, which were conceptualized as "confiding," "affection," "companionship," and "practical help." All of these components of social support were associated with hopelessness, which has important clinical implications as hopelessness is related to suicide risk. The results of this study also demonstrated that lower levels of social support, and greater sense of perceived hopelessness tended to lead to Australian resource workers seeking assistance from mental health professionals in the previous year. Attention should turn towards providing interventions that promote social support for employees in Australian resource industry.

BACKGROUND Gynecologic cancer can create hopelessness and death anxiety and alter the lifestyle of the affected women and their caregivers. Perceived social support may facilitate coping with this illness. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether hospitalized patients with gynecologic cancer and their caregivers differ in feelings of hopelessness and death anxiety and how those conditions may be related to their social support. METHODS Two hundred patients with gynecologic cancer and their 200 caregivers from 1 university hospital were enrolled in this descriptive correlational study. Study measures included a demographic form, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Thorson-Powell's Death Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed using Student t test, Pearson correlation test, and linear regression analyses. RESULTS Patients had higher hopelessness and death anxiety compared with caregivers (P < .001). Patients' perceived social support explained 35% of the total variance in hopelessness and 28% of the variance in death anxiety; caregivers' perceived social support explained 40% of the total variance in hopelessness and 12% of the variance in death anxiety. CONCLUSION Patients felt hopelessness and death anxiety in greater rates than caregivers. Social support had a significant effect on hopelessness and death anxiety of patients and their caregivers. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Nurses, who are the healthcare professionals spending time with patients and families from diagnosis forward, need to evaluate patients and their caregivers for hopelessness and death anxiety and consider their social support systems during this evaluation.
