Background: Is well known that oral health and dental aesthetic have significant effects on the sociality of human beings. The aim of the present study was to assess some aspects of oral health with possible repercussions in adolescent and youth, with particular reference to gender differences., Methods: A total of 190 subjects with female prevalence (F = 62.6%, M = 37%) and ages between 14 and 29 years old (Mean = 23.8; SD = 3.27) participated. Evaluation was carried using standardized instruments to assess quality of oral life (PIDAQ), negative impact of oral conditions (OHIP-14), and self-esteem (Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale). Correlational and difference analyses and linear regressions were performed., Results: Significant gender differences were found in terms of gender, in reference to variables such as self-confidence and convictions. Positive correlations emerged between psychological impact and social impact, aesthetic concern and social impact, convictions and self-confidence, oral health with psycho-social impact, and aesthetic concern, self-esteem with oral health. Inverse correlations emerged between psycho-social impact and self-confidence, aesthetic concern and self-confidence, oral health, and self-confidence. Multivariate linear regression indicated relations between age and psychological impact, sex and self-confidence, crooked teeth and conviction., Conclusions: The impact of oral health on the psychological well-being of young people is relevant. These factors, if considered within clinical practice, can improve the quality of life of the subject.

Background: Maxillary transverse discrepancy is often diagnosed in childhood. The evaluation of morphological characteristics of the maxilla is crucial for appropriate treatment of this condition, however conventional diagnostic method is based on visual inspection and transversal linear parameters. In this paper, we described a user-friendly diagnostic digital workflow based on the surface-to-surface analysis. We also described a case report., Case Report: A 6-year-old female patient presenting mild transversal maxillary deficiency associated with functional posterior crossbite was treated by using maxillary removable appliance. In this respect, the appliance was designed in accordance to the morphological characteristics of the maxilla obtained by using the diagnostic digital work-flow and the maxillary surface-to-surface analysis., Conclusion: The present user-friendly diagnostic digital workflow based on surface-to-surface analysis helps clinicians to detect specific morphological characteristics of the maxilla, such as shape and area of asymmetry, in order to reach a comprehensive diagnosis and choose the correct biomechanics for treating the condition.

Objective: To assess if photobiomodulation (PBM) improves the efficiency of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance during the alignment stage. Methods: Eighty-nine subjects were included in this trial and randomly assigned for treatment with fixed appliance and PBM group or with fixed appliance only (control group). Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) age between 13 and 30 years, (2) permanent dentition, (3) class I malocclusion, (4) lower 6-6 mild crowding measured on dental cast, (5) no spaces or diastema in the lower arch, (6) no ectopic teeth, (7) nonextractive treatment plan, and (8) no previous orthodontic treatment. PBM was administered in the PBM group every 14 days using the ATP38 ® (Biotech Dental, Allée de Craponne, Salon de Provence, France) (72 J/cm 2 of fluency for each session). Dental alignment was assessed by visual inspection, and treatment time was defined in days as T2 (date of assessment of complete dental alignment)-T1 (date of brackets bonding). The number of monthly scheduled appointments was also recorded. All the data underwent statistical analysis for comparison between groups. Results: Treatment time was significantly shorter ( p  < 0.001) in the PBM group (203 days) compared with the control (260 days). Consequently, control visits ( p  < 0.001) were lower in the PBM group (7) compared with the control group (9). Conclusions: The present findings would confirm that PBM can be used to enhance the efficiency of orthodontic treatment during dental decrowding.

Aim: To evaluate the methodological feasibility of a RCT comparing skeletal changes of nasal cavity size obtained with RME and SME, assessed via CBCT., Materials and Methods: Twenty Caucasian children with a mean age of 10.4 years were recruited and allocated to receive RME (10 subjects, mean age 10.4 years) or SME (10 subjects, mean age 10.5 years)., Inclusion Criteria: constricted maxillary arch, upper and lower first molars erupted, unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite., Exclusion Criteria: age above 15 years, history of previous orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, systemic disease affecting craniofacial growth, or craniofacial congenital syndrome. CBCT examinations were performed before treatment (T0) and 7 months after expander removal (T1). Changes of nasal width (NW), palatal width (PW) and total nasal volume (TNV) were assessed; palatal and nasal expansion was also calculated as a percentage of the increase of intermolar width IMW (PW% and NW%)., Results: The correlation between the first and the second readings ranged from 0.991 to 0.995 for linear measurements and was of 0.915 for volumetric measurements. The method error, as described by the value of ?, was in general less than 0.3 mm for linear measurements and 0.372 cm&#179; for volumetric measurements. All linear transverse skeletal and dental measurements and the nasal volume increased with both RME and SME protocols., Conclusion: The reported methodology can be reasonably used to investigate the transverse dimension of nasal cavity. The PW% and NW% parameters more accurately described the efficacy of the two expansion protocols as compared to their corresponding absolute measurement (PW and NW).

Objective: To evaluate changes in airway volumes and respiratory performance in patients undergoing rapid maxillary expansion and determine whether any correlations exist between the morphological and respiratory functional modifications induced by rapid maxillary expansion and pretreatment airway stenosis., Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients (11 females and 4 males; mean age, 7.5 ± 0.3 years) were enrolled in the study. Each patient underwent cone beam computed tomography and polysomnography examination before rapid maxillary expansion and after the removal of the maxillary expander 12 months later. The airway regions were segmented and the volumes were computed., Results: The upper, middle, and lower airway volumes were significantly increased 2305 mm(3), 1144 mm(3), and 1915 mm(3), respectively. Similarly, oxygen saturation was increased (+5.3%) and the apnea/hypopnea index was improved (-4.2 events). All the observed modifications were statistically significant (P < .05). Baseline middle and lower airway volume showed a significant negative correlation with the oxygen saturation modification., Conclusions: The results of this study showed that when rapid maxillary expansion is performed in subjects having posterior crossbite, oxygen saturation is improved. The improvement is greater in subjects having more reduced middle and lower airway volumes.

The objective of this systematic review was to estimate the efficacy of protraction facemask on the correction of Class III malocclusion in the short term. A systematic review of articles was performed using different electronic databases (PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, LILACS, and Google Scholar). Search terms comprised 'orthopedic treatment' and 'Class III malocclusion'. The selection criteria were set in order to include in this review only randomized clinical trials ( RCTs) performed treating with facemask Class III growing patients. Studies' selection, data extraction, and risk of bias's assessment were executed independently by two authors using pre-defined data forms. All pooled analyses of data were based on random effects models. A pre-specified subgroup analysis was planned to evaluate the effect of preliminary rapid palatal expansion on facemask efficacy. Three RCTs met our inclusion criteria. In total, data from 155 patients (92 treated and 63 controls) were collected. The treated group showed the following significant changes: ANB° +3.66° [95% CI (2.58, 4.74)]; SNA° +2.10 [95% CI (1.14, 3.06)]; SNB° −1.54 [95% CI (−2.13, −0.95)]; SN-palatal plane −0.82° [95% CI (−1.62, −0.02)]; and SN-mandibular plane +1.51 [95% CI (0.61, 2.41)]. Heterogeneity varied from low to moderate (mean I2 value: 41.4 ± 20.8). Facemask is effective correcting Class III malocclusion in the short term. The skeletal modifications induced by facemask are forward displacement of maxilla, backward displacement of mandible, clockwise rotation of the mandibular plane, and counterclockwise rotation of the maxillary plane.
