Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered important organisms, utilized as tools to transform waste including manure into valuable products. The growth and cultivation of BSFL are influenced by various factors, such as the presence of toxic substances in the feed and parasites. These factors play a crucial role in hormesis, and contributing to regulate these contaminants hermetic doses to get sustainable byproducts. This review aims to understand the effects on BSFL growth and activities in the presence of compounds like organic and inorganic pollutants. It also assesses the impact of microbes on BSFL growth and explores the bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical compounds, specifically focusing on heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, indigenous bacteria, insects, and nematodes. This study pursued to regulate bacterial community succession pattern and expedited biodegradation of microplastics (MP) during pig manure (PM) composting employing walnut shell biochar (WSB) and montmorillonite (M). The WSB with concentration of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 12% along with 10% M participated into PM for 42 days compost to search the optimal solution. The results confirmed the most prosperous bacterial phylum consisted of Firmicutes (3.02%-91.80%), Proteobacteria (2.08%-48.54%), Chloroflexi (0-44.62%) and Bacteroidetes (0.85%-40.93%). The addition of biochar has dramatically arranged bacterial community at different stages of composting. Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) revealed that carbon element in MPs decreased since the chemical bond fracture, under the intervention of high-temperature composting and WSB, the carbon content of MPs was maximum reduced by 20.25%. Fourier transform infrared spectrum indicated that CC, C-O, C-H and -COOH abundance of MPs in 10% and 12% dose biochar addition sharply reduced, interestingly, explicating WSB and composting made MP biodegradable. The effect of peach shell biochar (PSB) amendment on sheep manure (SM) composting was investigated. Five different ratios of PSB were applied (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% PSB), and named T1 to T5, and run 50 days of composting experiment. It was found that PSB (especially 7.5% and 10%) could improve the compost environment, regulate the activity of microorganisms and related enzymes, and promote the decomposition of compost. 7.5% and 10% PSB advanced the heap into the thermophilic stage and increased the maximum temperature, while also increasing the germination index by 1.40 and 1.39 times compared to control. Importantly, 10% PSB effectively retained more than 60% of carbon and 55% of nitrogen by inhibiting the excess release of NH 3 and greenhouse gases. High proportion PSB amendment increased the activity of dehydrogenase and cellulase, but inhibited protease and urease. The correlation results indicated that PSB changed the key bacterial genus, and there was a stronger association with environmental factors at 7.5% and 10%. Synthesized allophane was employed in anaerobic digestion of chicken manure to improve the stability and methane production under ammonia inhibition. Adding 0.5 %, 1.0 % and 1.5 % (w/w) allophane increased the methane production by 261 ∼ 350 % compared with the group without allophane addition. Further investigation indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of allophane for NH 4 + -N achieved at 261.9 mg/g; it suggested that allophane adsorption potentially alleviated the ammonia inhibition, which also was reflected by the increase in the activity of the related enzyme, such as coenzyme F 420 . Moreover, allophane addition also intensified the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in anaerobic digestion; it can be well supported by the increased relative abundance of Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina involved in the DIET. Free ammonia (FAN) inhibition is commonly encountered during high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) of pig manure. The performance of HSAD is highly related to its operational water regime; however, little information is available regarding the dynamics of free ammonia with varied water regimes. In this work, four treatments were set with equal amount of water supply but varied addition frequencies, i.e. add once but at different times in treatments T1 and T2, add twice in T3 while it was three times in treatment T4. Results showed that the whole methanogenic process ran smoothly with the average methane gas production rate maintaining at 191.1 LCH 4 /kgVS added . Although a higher methane gas production rate of 217.4 LCH 4 /kgVS added was achieved in T1, one time water addition triggered a higher ammonia inhibition potential. Cumulative FAN release was 6.03 mgFAN/kgVS added in T1 while the balance between FAN and ammonia tended to the fraction of FAN. In T4, cumulative FAN of 5.07 mgFAN/kgVS added was evolved, which was lower than that in T1 but similar to the situation in T2. This study aimed to enhance methane production from mixed anaerobic digestion of cow manure and corn straw by adding hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux. The hydrochar characterization revealed that it can provide attachment for microbial growth, and abundant surface functional groups (such as C-O, CO, C-OH, and C-N) for adsorption. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) mediated by surface oxygen-containing functional groups on hydrochar increased the methane yield. The experimental group added with hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux had the highest methane and biogas production (34.40% and 36.98% higher than the control group, respectively). Results demonstrate hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux can improve microorganism species richness in anaerobic digestion systems, in which hydrochar can also improve microorganism species uniformity. Distance-based redundancy analysis showed that the VFAs, and pH had the greatest effects on the composition of the microbial community. The dominant microorganism at the phylum level in AD system were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. The addition of hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux can significantly increase the species abundance of Methanobacterium. This study systematically evaluated the effects of bentonite as a possible additive to alleviate the "inhibited steady-state" induced by ammonia and acid accumulation during anaerobic digestion. Continuous stirred tank reactors fed with poultry manure were operated at 35 ± 1 °C either with bentonite or not. The results demonstrate that bentonite amendment increased average specific methane production by 35% as suffered from steady-state at an organic loading rate of 6.25 g VS/L·d. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that the relative abundance of electron-donating Sedimentibacter and Syntrophomonas, and electrophilic Methanosarcina was increased by 110%, 91%, and 49%, respectively. The genera were identified as crucial for alleviating "inhibited steady-state", through establishment of a more robust syntrophic pathway of methanogenic acetate degradation. The effects of chicken manure biochar (CMB) and chicken manure integrated microbial consortium (CMMC) as co-amendments were assessed on compost maturity and reduction of greenhouse gases and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions during chicken manure composting. Composting was conducted using six combinations of CMB and CMCC (0 % CMB + 0 % CMMC, 0 % CMB + 10 % CMMC, 2 % CMB + 10 % CMMC, 4 % CMB + 10 % CMMC, 6 % CMB + 10 % CMMC, 10 % CMB + 10 % CMMC added on a dry weight basis) in six polyvinyl chloride composting reactors for 42 days under an aerobic environment. Co-amendment of CMB and CMMC extended the thermophilic stage and promoted compost maturity. The release of greenhouse gases [nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and methane (CH 4 )] and NH 3 from treatments co-amended by CMB and CMMC were reduced by 19.0-27.4 %, 9.3-55.9 % and 24.2-56.9 %, respectively, compared with the control. This study evaluated the effect of integrated bacterial culture and biochar on heavy metal (HM) stabilization and microbial activity during pig manure composting. High-throughput sequencing was carried out on six treatments, namely T1-T6, where T2 was single application of bacteria culture (C), T3 and T5 were supplemented with 12 % wood (WB) and wheat-straw biochar (WSB), respectively, and T4 and T6 had a combination of bacterial consortium mixed with biochar (12 % WB and 12 % WSB, respectively). T1 was used as control for the comparison. The results show that the populations of bacterial phyla were significantly greater in T6 and T4. The predominate phylum were Proteobacteria (56.22 %), Bacteroidetes (35.40 %), and Firmicutes (8.38 %), and the dominant genera were Marinimicrobium (53.14 %), Moheibacter (35.22 %), and Erysipelothrix (5.02 %). Additionally, the correlation analysis revealed the significance of T6, as the interaction of biochar and bacterial culture influenced the HM adsorption efficiency and microbial dynamics during composting. Present study was focused on to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing bamboo biochar (BB) (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%) amendment on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) degradation and humification, as well as correlation with interrelated physicochemical parameters during chicken manure (CM) composting. The results showed that the extended thermophilic period and higher humic acid/fulvic acid ratio as well as richness bacteria community during CM composting. In addition, lower quantities of VFAs and odor generation with elevated biochar concentration. Redundancy analysis also supported that 10% BB has strong correlation with physicochemical parameters than other treatments. Overall, the 10% BB amendment could stimulate microbial activities to accelerate the organic waste degradation, reduced VFAs and odor emission so that improve hygiene and end product quality. This study focused on evaluate the effectiveness of biochar alone compare integrated with bacterial consortium amendment on the gaseous emissions mitigation as well as carbon and nitrogen sequestration during pig manure composting. Six additive treatments were performed based on uniform mixing pig manure with wheat straw [bacterial consortium (T2), 12%wood biochar (T3), 12%wood biochar + bacterial consortium (T4), 12%wheat straw biochar (T5), 12%wheat straw biochar + bacterial consortium (T6), while T1 without any additive]. The results obviously indicated that integrated use of biochar and bacterial consortium could remarkably relieved gaseous emissions, improved carbon and nitrogen conservation as well as accelerated maturity of composting. Notably the optimum combination was existed in T6 owing to lowest nutrient losses (nitrogen and carbon losses were 9.91 g/kg and 189.54 g/kg) and gas emissions (30.16 g/kg) as well as supreme maturity (germination index > 100%); it's an economic-practical and environmental protection novel disposal approach for solid waste., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, the influence of clay amendment on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) fate and their relation with bacterial diversity in poultry manure (PM) composting was evaluated. The results confirmed that 4% clay amendment was significantly reduce the relative abundances (RAs) 94% of ARGs, while higher dosage of clay blended treatments (T5 and T6) composts were observed relatively very high percentage of ARGs as compared to other clay blended treatments. Clay addition play potential role on the occurrence and distribution of ARGs during the composting by altering the overall RAs of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and there host bacterial species. The heat map correlation figure also indicated that reduction of ARGs was significantly associated with the alteration of microbial dynamics and physicochemical parameters during the composting. The present work studied to evaluate the effectiveness under the interaction of bacterial consortium and biochar applied to give impetus to bacterial community activities among cow manure composting. High-throughput sequencing technique and six treatments were carried out: T2, T3 and T6 were single apply of bacteria culture (C), 12%wood biochar (12%WB) and 12%wheat straw biochar (12%WSB), respectively, while T4 and T5 were bacterial consortium combined with 12%WB and 12%WSB respectively, and T1 was used as control. The conclusion shows that the richness of bacterial community were most prosperity in T5 and T4 that in line with the statistical analysis angle of curves and cluster. The dominate phyla of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were accounted to 31.36%, 34.79% and 33.85%, the superior genera were Dysgonomonas (16.55%), Empedobater (9.39%), Atopostipes (13.42%), Tissierella (8.25%), Marinimicrobium (14.45%) and Pseudomonas (9%). The aim of the study was to reduce relative abundance of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the poultry manure (PM) compost by adding clay and to determine the mechanism of this effect. Five doses of clay additive [at 0% (T1), 2% (T2), 4% (T3), 6% (T4), 8% (T5) and 10% (T6) based on PM dry weight] were compared to explore the mechanism of reduction in ARGs in the PM compost by the addition of clay. The results confirmed that in the initial raw PM from the breeding farm, the ARG concentrations were 1.7-3.01 times higher than that in the domestic PM. High doses of the clay additive play an important role in reduction in the ARGs and are the main factor responsible for significant variations in ARG abundance between the treatment groups. Therefore, we recommend adding high doses of clay (HDC) as an effective means to reduce the maximum percentage of ARGs in PM compost. The fungal dynamics and its correlation with physicochemical and gaseous emission were investigated using metagenomics and Heat map illustrator (HEMI). Five different concentrations of wheat straw biochar (WSB) were applied to poultry manure (PM) and composted for 50 days; those without the WSB treatment were used as a control. The results revealed the dominant phyla to be Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, while Batrachochytrium, Rhizophagus, Mucor, and Puccinia were the superior genera. In particular, the diversity of Chytridiomycota and Ascomycota was more abundant among all of the treatments. Overall, the diversity of the fungal species was correspondent, but relative abundance varied significantly among all of the composts. Principle Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) and Non-Metric Multi- Dimensional Scaling (NMDS) indicated that different concentrations of WSB applied treatments have significantly distinct fungal communities. In addition, correlation analyses of fungal interactions with environmental elements via HEMI also indicate a clear difference among the treatments. The objective of this study was to investigate the fungal community succession and variations in chicken manure (CM) compost with different concentration of bamboo biochar (BB) as additive via the using of metagenomics method. The consequent obviously revealed that Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant phylum, while Batrachochytrium, Funneliformis, Mucor, Phizophagus and Pyronema were the pre-dominant genera in each treatment. Redundancy analyses indicated that higher dosage of biochar applied treatments has significant correlation between fungal communities and environmental factors. The diversity of fungal community was analogous but the relative abundance (RA) was inconsistent among the all treatments. In addition, the principal component analysis was also confirmed that T5 and T6 treatments have considerably correlation than other treatments. However, the mean value of RA remained maximum in higher dosage of biochar blended treatments. In this study, the co-composting performance of Zn-rich antibiotic manufacturing wastes (AMW) and pig manure (PM) was evaluated. Four treatments, representing 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20% of AMW (of PM dry weight) and control without AMW, were established during composting. Results suggested that the temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, NH 4 + -N and germination index in end product met the maturity and sanitation requirement. More than 99% of residual antibiotic was removed. Compared with PM composting alone, the cumulative CH 4 and N 2 O emissions in AMW composting increased by 13.46-79.00% and 10.78-65.12%, respectively. While the higher mixing ratios of AMW (10% and 20%) presented a negative impact on composing by inhibiting organic matter (OM) degradation and higher NH 3 emissions. In this study, the main objective was to investigate the potential effect of tertiary-amine modified bentonite (TAMB) on the nitrogen transformation and the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) degradation during the chicken manure (CM) composting. Six dosages of TAMB (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%) were amended into the mixture of CM and wheat straw and then composted for 50 days. The results revealed the TAMB amendment could prolong the thermophilic phase and enhance the organic matter (OM) degradation. With the increasing dosage of TAMB, the ammonia volatilization was reduced by 15.41%-65.35%. Meanwhile, the TAMB addition had a positive effect on VFAs degradation and reducing odor unit MAX (OU MAX ) by 17.61%-59.24%. Moreover, CH 4 was reduced by 12.15%-32.78% in TAMB applied treatments compared to control. To assess the impact of clay as additive on compost maturity and reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) as well as ammonia emission during chicken manure composting. Six treatments with different dosages of clay (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% clay added by dry weight basis of chicken manure and wheat straw) were designed to conduct an aerobic composting experiment for 50 days. The results showed that the clay amendment could prolong the thermophilic phase and reduced the maturity period of composting. In addition, the GHGs (N 2 O and CH 4 ) and ammonia emission of clay added treatments were reduced by 25.3-63.4%, 26.01-50.24% and 8.5-70.5%, respectively. But CO 2 emission was significantly higher in 10% clay amended treatment. Furthermore, the redundancy analysis showed that C/N ratio and total organic matter among all physiochemical properties had significant relationship with GHGs and ammonia emission. Effect of bamboo biochar (BC) combined with two bacterial powders (B) on gaseous emission and variety of bacterial community during pig manure (PM) composting was investigated. The results showed that treatments of BC, BC + B1 and BC + B2 can reduce peak gaseous emission by 54%, 80% and 69% for CH 4 , respectively, while 37%, 45% and 45% for N 2 O, respectively, and 13%, 19% and 26% for NH 3 , respectively. The evolution of the bacterial community quantified with 16S rDNA analysis showed that in the thermophile stage, total relative abundance percentage of bacterial phyla of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria reached 97%, 97%, 93% and 96% for CK, BC, BC + B1 and BC + B2, respectively. Effects of BC on the compost bacterial community variation analysis proved bacterial activity in the thermophile stage was controlled by the content of dissolved organic carbon and temperature of the compost mixture, while electrical conductivity and total kjeldahl nitrogen also influenced compost maturity stage., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of enhancing wood vinegar (WV) with a mixture of biochar (B) and zeolite (Z) to compost pig manure (PM) in a 130 L reactor was evaluated to determine the levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia emissions. Six treatments were prepared in a 2:1 ratio of PM mixed with wheat straw (WS; dry weight basis): PM + WS (control), PM + WS + 10%B, PM + WS + 10%B + 10%Z, and PM + WS with 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%WV combined with 10%B + 10%Z. These were composted for 50 days, and the results indicated that the combined use of B, Z, and WV could shorten the thermophilic phase and improve the maturity of compost compared to the control treatment. In addition, WV mixed with B and Z could reduce ammonia loss by 64.45-74.32% and decrease CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O emissions by 33.90-46.98%, 50.39-61.15%, and 79.51-81.10%, respectively. Furthermore, compared to treatments in which B and B + Z were added, adding WV was more efficient to reduce the nitrogen and carbon loss, and the 10%B + 10%Z + 2%WV treatment presented the lowest loss of carbon (9.16%) and nitrogen (0.75%). The aim of this work was to compare the impact of biochar, zeolite and their mixture on nitrogen conservation and organic matter transformation during pig manure (PM) composting. Four treatments were set-up from PM mixed with wheat straw and then applied 10% biochar (B), 10% zeolite (Z) and 10% biochar+10% zeolite (B+Z) into composting mixtures (dry weight basis), while treatment without additives applied used as control. Results indicated that adding B, Z and B+Z could obviously (p<0.05) improve the organic matter degradation and decrease the nitrogen loss. And combined addition of B and Z further promoted the organic matter humification and reduced the heavy metals mobility. Meanwhile the highest mitigation of ammonia (63.40%) and nitrogen dioxide (78.13%) emissions was observed in B+Z added treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of different concentrations (0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0%) of medical stone (MS) on the lignocellulose degradation and organic matter humification during pig manure (PM) composting. The results indicated that the addition of MS drastically promoted the organic carbon and lignin degradation. Compared to the control, the decomposition rate of hemicellulose and cellulose was increased by 9.64-27.08% and 2.11-12.07% in MS added treatments. Meanwhile, MS amendment significantly improved the humification of composting process, and the humic acid contents in MS added treatments were 5.58-9.75% higher than control. The FTIR and synchronous fluorescence spectra indicated that the aromatization of final compost was promoted with increasing the MS amount. In addition, the application of MS blended composts could significantly improve the biomass and chlorophyll content of pachoi (Brassica chinensis L.). The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of medical stone (MS) on nitrogen conservation and improving the compost quality during the pig manure (PM) composting. Five treatments were designed with different concentrations of MS0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% (on dry weight of pig manure basis) mixed with initial feed stock and then composted for 60days. The results showed that MS amendment obviously (p<0.05) promoted the organic waste degradation and prolonged the thermophilic phase as well as enhanced the immobilization of heavy metals Cu and Zn. With increasing the amount of MS, the NH3 loss and N2O emission were significantly reduced by 27.9-48.8% and by 46.6-85.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, the MS amendment could reduce the NO2(-)-N formation and increase the NO3(-)-N content. This study aim was to investigate the influence of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) on pathogenic bacteria (PB) survival in the chicken manure (CM), pig manure (PM), cow manure (COM) and sewage sludge (SS) compost. Three kinds of manure [chicken (T2), pig (T4) and cow (T6)] and SS (T8) were inoculated with BSFL (1.2:7 ratio on fresh weight basis) and without BSFL (T1, T3, T5 and T7) was used as control and experiment lasted for 9 days. The results indicated that BSFL amendment 90–93% of PB abundances (RAs) was significantly mitigate in CM and COM (T2 and T6), and 86–88% in PM and SS compost. However, relatively greater abundance of PB was recorded in the T4 and T8 treatments. Most of the PB belong to Proteobacteria, Firmicutes , Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes phylum and their community composition varied from phylum to species levels among the all treatments. The PB composition was significantly altered by BSFL amendment and also important role play to enhance in compost quality. Interestingly, Bacillus and Clostridium were significantly very less abundant present in BSFL applied treatments, but considerably higher population of these bacterial genus and its associated species were identifies from control or without BSFL applied treatments. Overall, without BSFL blended-all three kinds of manure-composts have comparatively greater PB abundance than with BSFL applied treatments, as the PB species Listeria_monocytogenes_FSL_R2–503, Staphylococcus_aureus_M0406, Bacillus_anthracis, Listeria_ivanovii, Staphylococcus_aureus_C0673, Salmonella Bacillus_cereus_VD115, Mycobacterium_tuberculosis_FJ05194 and Pseudomonas_aeruginosa has relatively greater RAs, followed by Bartonella_bacilliformis_Ver075; Bordetella_pertussis_2356847; Brucella_melitensis_ADMAS-G1; Klebsiella_pneumoniae_LCT-KP182 and Corynebacterium_jeikeium_K411 respectively. Thus, chicken manure composting with BSFL addition is efficient technology for the organic waste recycling and conversion of sanitized matured compost with significantly less abundance of pathogenic bacteria. The increasing number of livestock farms has led to a great deal of manure generation, and its improper treatment results in threats to the environment. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have the potential to effectively convert manure into high-quality fertilizer. The aims of this investigation were to observe the organic matter transformation of different livestock manures and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and to evaluate the end product quality. Three types of manure [chicken (T1), pig (T2), and cow (T3)] were inoculated with BSFL (1.2:7 ratio on fresh weight basis), three types without BSFL were used as control (T4, T5, and T6), and both were composted for 9 days. The results showed that the BSFL composting reduced the organic matter by 20.31–22.18% and the accumulation of VFAs by 25.58–80.08% as compared to the control. BSFL composting greatly decreased the nitrogen, by 6.08–14.37%. The employment of BSFL significantly increased the total phosphorous (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and total nutrients by 42.30–64.16%, 45.41–88.17%, and 26.51–33.34%, respectively. This study showed that employing BSFL could improve the quality of the product and the maturity degree of the composting. Therefore, the BSFL could be added as a high-efficiency transformation agent for converting organic manure into stable compost, especially in developing countries, where adopting technical devices for composting is expensive and difficult to manipulate.
