In this study we have sought to present features of regulations and administration concerning popular food trade in market squares across Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 20th century. We have also striven to prove the diversity of social groups and practices pertaining to this trade, as well as tensions and conflicts between administrators, retailers and workers in the city's two largest markets.
