Abstract

This article examines the historical roots of the role of successive Turkish governments' fear of media and Turkish media's fear of government authority with respect to the development of press freedom over the long run and closely analyzes the historical pressures imposed on journalists through legal and informal means. We focus particularly on the economic and political pressure on the media in Turkey and offer three arguments regarding the fear in Turkish media: (1) Media fear is historical rather than a rupture that happened during the Justice and Development Party era; (2) out of fear of losing power, the governments use structural, legislative and extra-legal factors to the advantage of the ruling party to support a friendly media-ecology; and (3) the repressed media attempt to come out of this ecology of fear by utilizing new tactics of reporting, such as alternative media and citizen journalism. Abstract

During the last century Turkish media strived to establish the four basic foundation stones of the libertarian model of media:constitutional protections,existence of a capitalist industrial production system,a bourgeois class and a readership-viewership.Turkish model of media aimed at such a libertarian model with occasional setbacks due to the control of governments of the press.Between 1980 and 2000 Turkish media grew more and more liberal and was able to express discontent publicly exercising its checks and balances function.This paper argues that the trend of government vs.the media is now being challenged by big business and media conglomerates on one side.On the other,the conservative majority of AKP, the governing party in Turkey,brought back pressures on the Turkish media since the 2000s.The repression of information through court orders and other means are a few of the tactics of the government.It will be suggested that the future of the media in Turkey is at the crossroads on the one side media conglomerates who strives to be economically and politically liberal against the government who wants to suppress such media.The recent case of the owner of big media conglomerate vs. the Prime Minister of Turkey will be studied. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
