Oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) play an important role in the formation of atmospheric aerosols. Due to various analytical challenges in measuring organic vapors, uncertainties remain in the formation and fate of OOMs. The chemical ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometer (CI-Orbitrap) has recently been shown to be a powerful technique able to accurately identify gaseous organic compounds due to its great mass resolving power. Here we present the ammonium ion (NH4+) based CI-Orbitrap as a technique capable of measuring a wide range of gaseous OOMs. The performance of the CI-(NH4+)-Orbitrap was compared with that of state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, including a nitrate ion (NO3-) based CI coupled to an atmospheric pressure interfaced to long time-of-flight mass spectrometer (APi-LTOF), a new generation of proton transfer reaction-TOF mass spectrometer (PTR3-TOF), and an iodide (I-) based CI-TOF mass spectrometer equipped with a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The instruments were deployed simultaneously in the Cosmic Leaving OUtdoors Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) during the CLOUD14 campaign in 2019. Products generated from α-pinene ozonolysis across multiple experimental conditions were simultaneously measured by the mass spectrometers. NH4+-Orbitrap was able to identify the widest range of OOMs (i.e., O = 2), from low oxidized species to highly oxygenated volatile organic compounds (HOM). Excellent agreements were found between the NH4+-Orbitrap and the NO3--LTOF for characterizing HOMs and with the PTR3- TOF for the less oxidized monomeric species. A semi-quantitative information was retrieved for OOMs measured by NH4+-Orbitrap using calibration factors derived from this side-by-side comparison. As other mass spectrometry techniques used during this campaign, the detection sensitivity of NH4+-Orbitrap to OOMs is greatly affected by relative humidity, which may be related to changes in ionization efficiency and/or multiphase chemistry. Overall, this study shows that NH4+ ion46 based chemistry associated with the high mass resolving power of the Orbitrap mass analyzer can measure almost all-inclusive compounds. We present first eddy covariance flux measurements with the PTR3-TOF-MS, a novel proton transfer time of flight reaction mass spectrometer. During 3 weeks in spring 2016, the instrument recorded 10 Hz data of biogenic volatile organic compounds above a boreal forest, on top of a measurement tower at the SMEAR (Station for Measuring Ecosystem –Atmosphere Relations) II station in Hyytiälä, Finland. Flux and concentration data of isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes were compared to the literature. Due to the improved instrument sensitivity and a customized wall-less inlet design, we could detect fluxes of semi-volatile and low-volatility organic compounds with less than single-digit picomol per square meter per second (pmolm-2s-1) values for the first time. These compounds include sesquiterpene oxidation products and diterpenes. Daytime diterpene fluxes were in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 pmolm-2s-1 , which amounts to about 0.25 % to 0.5 % of the daytime sesquiterpene flux above canopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In most organisms, the concentration of free Zn2+ is controlled by metallothioneins (MTs). In contrast, no significant proportions of Zn2+ are bound to MTs in the slug, Arion vulgaris. Instead, this species possesses cytoplasmic low-molecular-weight Zn2+ (LMW Zn) binding compound that divert these metal ions into pathways uncoupled from MT metabolism. Zn2+ is accumulated in the midgut gland calcium cells of Arion vulgaris, where they associate with a low-molecular-weight ligand with an apparent molecular mass of ~ 2,000 Da. Mass spectrometry of the semi-purified LMW Zn binding compound combining an electrospray ion source with a differential mobility analyser coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer revealed the presence of four Zn2+-containing ion signals, which arise from disintegration of one higher MW complex resulting in an ion-mobility diameter of 1.62 nm and a molecular mass of 837 Da. We expect that the novel Zn2+ ion storage pathway may be shared by many other gastropods, and particularly species that possess Cd-selective MT isoforms or variants with only very low affinity to Zn2+. Here we present an alternative approach of an Atmospheric-Pressure interface (APi) Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometer for the study of atmospheric ions and cluster ions, the so-called ioniAPi-TOF. The novelty is the use of two hexapoles as ion guides within the APi. As we will show, hexapoles can accept and transmit a broad mass range enabling the study of small precursor ions and heavy cluster ions at the same time. Weakly bound cluster ions can easily de-cluster during ion transfer depending on the voltages applied to the ion transfer optics. With the example system of H3O+(H2O)n=0-3, we estimate that cluster ions with higher binding energies than 17kcal/mol can be transferred through the APi without significant fragmentation, which is considerably lower than about 25kcal/mol estimated from the literature for APi-TOFs with quadrupole ion guides. In contrast to the low fragmenting ion transfer, the hexapoles can be set to a high fragmenting declustering mode for collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments as well. The ion transmission efficiency over a broad mass range was determined to be in the order of 1%, which is comparable to existing instrumentation. From measurements under well-controlled conditions during the CLOUD experiment, we demonstrate the instrument's performance and present results from an inter-comparison with a quadrupole based APi-TOF. During nucleation studies from pure isoprene oxidation in the CLOUD chamber at CERN we observed unexpected ion signals at m/z = 137.133 (C10H17+) and m/z = 81.070 (C6H9+) with the recently developed proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR3-TOF) instrument. The mass-to-charge ratios of these ion signals typically correspond to protonated monoterpenes and their main fragment. We identified two origins of these signals: First secondary association reactions of protonated isoprene with isoprene within the PTR3 reaction chamber and secondly [4+2] cycloaddition (Diels-Alder) of isoprene inside the gas bottle which presumably forms the favoured monoterpenes limonene and sylvestrene, as known from literature. Under our PTR3 conditions used in 2016 an amount (relative to isoprene) of 2 % is formed within the PTR3 reaction chamber and 1 % is already present in the gas bottle. The presence of unwanted cycloaddition products in the CLOUD chamber impacts the nucleation studies by creating ozonolysis products as corresponding monoterpenes, and is responsible for the majority of the observed highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs). In order to study NPF from pure isoprene oxidation under atmospheric relevant conditions, it is important to improve and assure the quality and purity of the precursor isoprene. Real time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a Proton-Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer was performed at the Mauna Loa Baseline Station (19.54N, 155.58W) in March/April 2001 (March 23, 2001–April 17, 2001). Mixing ratios for methanol, acetone, acetonitrile, isoprene and methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) plus methacrolein (MACR) ranged between 0.2 and 1.8, 0.2 and 1, 0.07 and 0.2, <0.02 and 0.3, and <0.02 and 0.5 ppbv, respectively. Biomass burning plumes transported from South-East Asia and the Indian Subcontinent across the Pacific influenced part of the measurement campaign. ΔAcetonitrile/ΔCO and Δacetone/Δacetonitrile ratios in these cases were 1.5×10−3 to 2.5×10−3 and 2–5 ppbv/ppbv, respectively. Overall Asian outflow events were not as frequent during Spring 2001 as in previous years. Methanol did not show significant correlation with CO, acetonitrile, and acetone. The abundance of acetone and CO seemed to be influenced but not dominated by biomass burning and domestic biofuel emissions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have developed and characterized the novel PTR3, a proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF) using a new gas inlet and an innovative reaction chamber design. The reaction chamber consists of a tripole operated with rf voltages generating an electric field only in the radial direction. An elevated electrical field is necessary to reduce clustering of primary hydronium (H3O+) and product ions with water molecules present in the sample gas. The axial movement of the ions is achieved by the sample gas flow only. Therefore, the new design allows a 30-fold longer reaction time and a 40-fold increase in pressure compared to standard PTR-TOF-MS. First calibration tests show sensitivities of up to 18000 counts per second/parts per billion and volume (cps/ppbv) at a mass resolution of >8000 m/Δm (fwhm). The new inlet using center-sampling through a critical orifice reduces wall losses of low volatility compounds. Therefore, the new PTR3 instrument is sensitive to VOC typically present in the ppbv range as well as to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) and even highly oxidized organic molecules (HOMs) present in the parts per quadrillion per volume (ppqv) range in the atmosphere. Biogenic emissions of hydrocarbons, primarily isoprene, dominate the VOC emission inventory in eastern Texas. Air quality model predictions of isoprene in southeast Texas were evaluated using ground and aircraft measurements collected during the Texas Air Quality Study 2000. The effects of two different vertical mixing schemes on model predictions of isoprene concentrations were also evaluated. The photochemical and biogenic emission estimation models used were the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions and the Global Biosphere Emissions and Interactions System. Ground level isoprene concentrations predicted by the models showed markedly good agreement with measured diurnal isoprene patterns. The vertical mixing schemes were most influential on surface concentrations, resulting in differences of as much as 270% in modeled isoprene concentrations. The model over predicted observations from airborne canister samples by as much as a factor of two over rural areas, but under predicted observations over urban areas. Modeled isoprene concentrations were also compared with measurements from an airborne Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer, and the results indicated under prediction of isoprene by the model over urban areas, but better agreement in rural areas. The impacts of the vertical mixing schemes on isoprene concentrations were less direct aloft than at the surface. The resulting vertical redistribution of isoprene affected transport rates, chemistry, and the accumulation of mass. As a result, differences in concentrations aloft ranged from none to as much as 30%. This study reinforces the challenges of air quality model validation for highly reactive species such as isoprene, and the need for carefully controlled studies of biogenic emissions and chemical processing during different meteorological conditions in regions with spatially heterogeneous land use.
