So far, a consolidation of the design strategy of such step-graded buffers has been impaired by the incomplete understanding of the effect of individual buffer design parameters on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the epilayers. Herein, we have analyzed a series of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition grown GaN/graded-AlGaN/AlN/Si heterostructures through in situ curvature measurements and post-growth x-ray diffraction (XRD). Our results reveal that in such epi structures, the GaN layer itself induces more compressive stress than the AlGaN buffer, but the underlying AlGaN layers dictate the magnitude of this stress. Furthermore, for a fixed AlGaN buffer thickness, the mean-stress accumulated during the GaN growth is found to be correlated with its structural properties. Specifically, one µm thick GaN layers that acquire 1.50 GPa or higher compressive mean-stress are seen to possess 20 2 ˉ 1 XRD ω-FWHM values less than 650 arc-sec. Also, the evolution of instantaneous stresses during the growth of the AlGaN layers is found to be a valuable indicator for buffer optimization, and composition difference between successive layers is established as a crucial criterion. The results also show that increasing the total buffer thickness (for a fixed number of steps) or increasing the number of steps (for a fixed total buffer thickness) may not always be beneficial. Irrespective of the buffer thickness, optimized high electron mobility transistor structures show similarly low sheet-resistance (∼350 Ω □)−1 and high mobility (∼2000 cm2 V−1 s −1) at room temperature.

Four major toners are used in the printing industry, cyan, magenta, yellow and black (Key) for making color images on paper. Paper brands suitable for printing have thin mineral/latex coatings, and toners are applied on top of the coating in the printing process. Chemical compositions from toner to toner, as well as from coating to coating, vary according to the needs of the end user. Interactions between the toner and the coating define the final color formation of the images in printing. Hence, it is important to study characteristics and dynamics of toners on coated papers. In this paper, we have used laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) to provide information on elemental distributions of the toner and the coating layers on three coated papers and the base paper at a sub-micrometer resolution. Ablation crater depth profiles in the three different material layers were converted into metric scale by combining elemental information from the LIBS measurements and optical profilometry. Ablation efficiencies for a toner of 150 nm/pulse, for a coating of approximately 350 nm/pulse and for a base paper of approximately 1 μm at a fluence of 0.6 J/cm2 of an ArF excimer laser were determined. Using these results, the average layer thicknesses of the toner and the coating layers were evaluated. The detailed analysis of the elemental profiles of the two cyan toners studied revealed strong accumulation of silicon and titanium compounds of the toner on the toner–air interface but also on the toner–coating interface, but to a much smaller extent. The observation reveals the significance of toner component diffusion due to substrate–machine interaction in the printing process. Such diffusion processes must have an important role in final color formation of the images in printing. The method developed provides a unique and accurate means to study toner diffusion processes in coated papers under printing conditions.

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a foam-like porous material consisting of few-layer graphene obtained by laser irradiation of a wide range of carbon-containing substrates. Among these, the ability to synthesize LIG from paper and other cellulose-related materials is particularly exciting, as it opens the door to a wide assortment of potential applications in the form of low-cost, flexible, and biodegradable devices. Here, the synthesis of this material, dubbed paper-LIG, on different types of filter papers and xylan biopolymer is discussed. In particular, we report the formation of paper-LIG by single-step irradiation, providing an improvement over the conventional multiple lasing approach and giving an explanation of the conditions that allow this simplified synthesis. All the relevant process parameters are covered, assessing their effect on the resulting electrical properties, structure, and morphology. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of LIG obtained from xylan, an abundant and often underutilized biopolymer, for temperature sensing. These results provide a better understanding of the conditions required for the synthesis of highly conductive LIG from paper and related materials, paving the way for its application, with reduced cost and low environmental impact, in fields ranging from biomonitoring to consumer electronics. published

Phys. 22 023020) suggest that elemental sulfur does not adopt the simple-cubic (SC) P m 3 ̄ m phase at high pressures, in disagreement with previous works (Rudin and Liu 1999 Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 3049--52; Gavryushkin et al 2017 Phys. Status Solidi B 254 1600857). We carry out an extensive set of calculations using a variety of different exchange–correlation functionals (both local and non-local), and show that even though under LDA and PW91 a high-pressure SC phase does indeed become favourable at the static lattice level, when zero-point energies (ZPEs) are included, the transition to the SC phase is suppressed in every case, owing to the larger ZPE of the SC phase; thus confirming the transition sequence as R 3 ̄ m → BCC, with no intervening SC phase. We reproduce these findings with pseudopotentials that explicitly include core electronic states, and show that even at these high pressures, only the n = 3 valence shell contributes to bonding in sulfur. We then compare our findings against the all-electron code ELK, which is in excellent agreement with our pseudopotential results, and examine the roles of the exchange and correlation contributions to the total energy. We further calculate anharmonic vibrational corrections to the ZPEs of the two phases, and find that such corrections are several orders of magnitude smaller than the ZPEs and are thus negligible. The effect of finite temperatures is also considered, and we show that the P m 3 ̄ m phase becomes even more unfavourable with an increase in temperature. Finally, the experimental consequences of our results on the equation of state of sulfur and its superconducting critical temperature are explicitly calculated.

Hydrogels of TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose were stabilized for dry-jet wet spinning using a shell of cellulose dissolved in 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-enium propionate ([DBNH][CO2Et]), a protic ionic liquid (PIL). Coagulation in an acidic water bath resulted in continuous core-shell filaments (CSFs) that were tough and flexible with an average dry (and wet) toughness of similar to 11 (2) MJ.m(-3) and elongation of similar to 9 (14) %. The CSF morphology, chemical composition, thermal stability, crystallinity, and bacterial activity were assessed using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and bacterial cell culturing, respectively. The coaxial wet spinning yields PIL-free systems carrying on the surface the cellulose II polymorph, which not only enhances the toughness of the filaments but facilities their functionalization.

A bio-inspired cellulose paper–poly(amidoxime) composite hydrogel is explored via UV-polymerization. This hydrogel has a highly efficient uranium capture capacity of up to 6.21 mg g−1 for WU/Wdry gel and 12.9 mg g−1 for WU/Wpoly(amidoxime) in seawater for 6 weeks, due to its enhanced hydrophilicity, good hydraulic/ionic conductivity and broad-spectrum antibacterial performance.

The first discrete bimetallic europium(iii)/copper(ii) complex for the fast, sensitive and selective luminescent detection of both aqueous and gaseous hydrogen sulfide has been developed. The chemosensor displayed an impressive response time of 30 seconds and a low theoretical limit of detection (100 ppb) for gaseous hydrogen sulfide.

To date, flexible pressure sensors built on silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted tremendous attention, owing to their versatile applications in wearable, human-interactive, health-monitoring devices. Cellulose and its derivatives, which show great promise in serving flexible pressure sensors as the desired substrate due to their natural abundance, biocompatibility, easy processibility, and low costs. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to design a silver nanowires-dual-cellulose conductive paper. Its morphology, chemical and crystal structures, thermal stability, mechanical performances, and electrical properties were carefully studied. Transition-edge sensors (TESs) are capable of highly accurate single particle energy measurement. TESs have been used for a wide range of photon detection applications, particularly in astronomy, but very little consideration has been given to their capabilities as electron calorimeters. Existing electron spectrometers require electron filtering optics to achieve energy discrimination, but this step discards the vast majority of electrons entering the instrument. TESs require no such energy filtering, meaning they could provide orders of magnitude improvement in measurement rate. To investigate the capabilities of TESs in electron spectroscopy, a simulation pipeline has been devised. The pipeline allows the results of a simulated experiment to be compared with the actual spectrum of the incident beam, thereby allowing measurement accuracy and efficiency to be studied. Using Fisher information, the energy resolution of the simulated detectors was also calculated, allowing the intrinsic limitations of the detector to be separated from the specific data analysis method used. The simulation platform has been used to compare the performance of TESs with existing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysers. TESs cannot match the energy resolution of XPS analysers for high-precision measurements but have comparable or better resolutions for high count rate applications. The measurement rate of a typical XPS analyser can be matched by an array of 10 TESs with 120 microsecond response times and there is significant scope for improvement, without compromising energy resolution, by increasing array size., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Detection and characterization of DNA damage plays a critical role in genotoxicity testing, drug screening, and environmental health. We developed a fully integrated origami paper-based analytical device (oPAD) for measuring DNA damage. This simple device allows on-paper cell lysis, DNA extraction, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) reaction and signal readout with simple operation steps, enabling rapid (within 30 min) and high throughput assessment of multiple DNA damages induced by exogenous chemical agents.

Based on many years of experience, packaging is considered as an inactive barrier that protects materials and goods from environmental factors. The applicability of native chemical additive such as essential oils in wrapping papers can be used in the forms of films, treatments, coatings or others. Essential oils or extracts from different aromatic plants are used as bioactive substances for antimicrobial activity. In this research, lavender essential oil treatment of packaging papers is examined for its inhibition activity under nine microorganisms—two Gram-positive bacteria, three Gram-negative bacteria, two yeast and two fungal strains. The effectiveness of the treatment on the structural and strength indicators of the obtained paper samples is monitored. In detail, a five-day examination is conducted on the antibacterial effectiveness of lavender essential oil treatment. Results indicate that the lavender treatment of the obtained packaging paper is successful and the antifungal effect is more pronounced. The antimicrobial efficiency of paper treated with lavender essential oil is between 60 and 90% in the first two hours after treatment and gradually decreases to 40%–50% at the end of the 120 h period. The lavender essential oil treatment of wrapping paper has a promising perspective for preserving products from microbial spoilage and extending their shelf life.

Gaseous acetic acid is formed under conditions of storage of historic paper objects. Its presence not only promotes hydrolytic cleavage of cellulose, but also causes acetylation of the cellulosic material to very small degree. The acetylation reaction proceeds under ambient conditions and without catalyst. Different analytical methods were used to prove the presence of organic acetates on cellulosic paper matrices. DESI-MS in combination with 2H-isotopic labeling showed the presence of sugar fragments with different acetylation patterns. A method based on Zemplen saponification was applied and worked also in the presence of a large excess of acetic acid and/or inorganic acetates. The acetylation effect was quantified for model papers and original, naturally aged paper samples. While cellulose acetylation was clearly proven to be another general pathway of paper aging, further studies of this acetylation phenomenon are needed with regard to conservational aspects and suitable paper storage conditions.

Negative ion mode paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) suffers from intense background noise and unstable MS signal. For the first time, we reported fluorinated boron nitride nanosheet (h-FBN) assisted negative ion PS-MS for the detection of a series of molecules. We demonstrated that the introduction of h-FBN can greatly improve the detection sensitivity and signal stability in the negative ion mode.

Plane wave density functional theory codes generally assume periodicity in all three dimensions. This causes difficulties when studying charged systems, for instance energies per unit cell become infinite, and, even after being renormalised by the introduction of a uniform neutralising background, are very slow to converge with cell size. The periodicity introduces spurious electric fields which decay slowly with cell size and which also slow the convergence of other properties relating to the ground state charge density. Developing green and simple methods for the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) is of great significance. Herein, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) system based on choline chloride (ChCl) and citric acid (CA) is employed to pretreat cellulose fibers for the preparation of CNFs. The effect of the pretreatment temperature on the chemo-physical properties of the CNFs is comprehensively investigated. A high CNFs yield of up to 84.19% can be achieved under optimized conditions. The optimal CNFs show a narrow diameter distribution and length up to several microns, high crystallinity and thermal stability, as well as excellent dispersibility in water. Furthermore, semi-transparent and flexible cellulose nanopaper (CNP) was fabricated through a facile vacuum filtration process. The optimal CNP shows high tensile strength (175.15 MPa) and toughness (7.51 MJ/m3). Therefore, this work provides a sustainable and facile approach to fabricate CNFs and CNP, which can be potentially used for various high-tech applications.

This study reports on eco-friendly graft polymerization approach for the modification of a cellulosic material via combination between enzymatic catalysis and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). Polyacrylamide (PAM) was polymerized on a cellulosic filter paper via horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-initiated RAFT polymerization. The results of grafting ratio, conversion, and pseudo-first-order kinetics were proved that the PAM graft polymerization on the filter paper followed RAFT rules. The results of Attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR), elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of PAM in PAM-grafted filter paper. The results of water contact angle and Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) evidenced the change in the wetting properties and thermal performance, respectively of the treated filter paper. This work provides a new environmentally approach to graft polymerization on cellulosic materials.

Inkjet printing is an established technology that has been revisited in recent years for the low-cost and easy production of electrical sensing and biosensing systems. With this technique, it is possible to produce flexible microsystems on eco-compatible substrates such as polymers and paper. In this sense, we investigated the printing performances of a common office inkjet printer and of a commercial conducting ink, to produce aptamer-based electrochemical biosensors for antibiotics detection. During our analysis we characterized both the morphological and electrical properties of the printed electrodes, considering also their stability over time and tuning all the parameters to obtain reproducible micrometric systems. The produced devices proved to be able to undergo aptamer functionalization and to detect Ampicillin, a common used antibiotic, in few minutes with a LOD of 10 μg/ml in milk. Therefore, in this preliminary work we demonstrated the feasibility of low-cost customized inkjet-printed biosensors, and their possible use to prevent both antibiotic contaminations and antibiotic resistance development.

A green and facile method is presented for in situ synthesis of a novel photoluminescence-quenching nanopaper with a highly-efficient quenching ability, rapid reaction time and long-term storage. The as-prepared nanopaper is further used to construct an aptasensor platform with high performance, rapidness and robustness.

COVID-19 is a highly diffuse respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Currently, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) technology is commonly used in clinical diagnosis of COVID-19. However, this method is time-consuming and labor-intensive, which is limited in clinical application. Here, we propose a new method for the ultrasensitive and visual detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral nucleic acid. The assay integrates with a paper device and highly efficient isothermal amplification technology - Netlike rolling circle amplification (NRCA), which can reach a limit of detection of 4.12 aM. The paper-based NRCA owns advantages of specificity, portability, visualization and low-cost. Filtration is a promising water treatment method to purify drinking water. To develop highly efficient drinking water filter paper, water-resistant cellulose foam paper with a high wet strength property was fabricated using diverse metal oxide (e.g., copper oxide (CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and silver oxide (Ag2O)) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were synthesized using the hydrothermal reaction method. Their morphological structures were studied using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The presence of coated nanoparticles on the cellulose foam filter was verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) methods. The antibacterial performance of different types of modified cellulose foam filters was studied against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and B. cereus strains using the zone of inhibition test. The antibacterial profile of the cellulose foam filter impregnated with Ag2O nanoparticles, when tested against different types of bacteria, exhibited higher antibacterial activity than the cellulose foam filter impregnated with ZnO and CuO nanoparticles.

Flexoelectricity is the polar response of an insulator to strain gradients such as bending. While the size dependence of this effect makes it weak in bulk systems in comparison to piezoelectricity, it suggests that it plays a bigger role in nanoscale systems such as thin films and nanotubes (NTs). In this paper we demonstrate using first-principles calculations that the walls of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and transition metal dichalcogenide nanotubes (TMD NTs) are polarized in the radial direction, the strength of the polarization increasing as the size of the NT decreases. For CNTs and TMD NTs with chiral indices $(n,m)$, the radial polarization of the walls $P_R$ starts to diverge below $ C(n,m)/a = \sqrt{n^2 +nm + m^2} \sim 10$, where $C(n,m)$ is the circumference of the NT and $a$ is the lattice constant of the 2D monolayer. For CNTs, $P_R$ drops to zero above this value but for TMD NTs there is a non-zero polarization above this value, which is an ionic rather than electronic effect. The size dependence of $P_R$ in the TMD NTs is interesting: it increases gradually and reaches a maximum of $P_R \sim 100 \ \text{C/cm}^2$ at $C(n,m)/a \sim 15$, then decreases until $C(n,m)/a \sim 10$ where it starts to diverge. Measurements of the radial strain on the chalcogen atoms with respect to the 2D monolayers shows that this polarization is the result of a significantly larger strain on the outer bonds than the inner bonds, but did not offer an explanation for the peculiar size dependence. These results suggest that while the walls of smaller CNTs and TMD NTs are polarized, the walls of larger TMD NTs are also polarized due to a difference in strain on the inner and outer atoms in the walls. The progress of bio-based fluorescent smart materials and their multifunctional applications have attained increasing interest in the recent decades. Cellulose is among the cheapest and widespread raw material on earth which can be modified into diverse useful materials. This review summarizes the chemical modification of cellulose into smart fluorescent materials. This further highlights on the fabrication of the prepared fluorescent materials into films, fibers, paper strips, carbon dots, hydrogels and solutions which are applied for the sensing of toxic metals and anions, pH, bioimaging, common organic solvents, aliphatic and aromatic amines, nitroaromatics, fluorescent printing, coating, and anti-counterfeiting applications. Finally, the discussion about the upcoming investigations, challenges, and options open for the cellulose-based luminescence sensors are communicated. We believe that this review will appeal more and more attention and curiosity for the chemists, biochemists, and chemical engineers working with the synthesis of cellulose-based fluorescent materials for widespread applications.

In this work, we propose a new concept of a high gradient trapped field magnet (HG-TFM). The HG-TFM is made from (RE)BaCuO bulk superconductors, in which slit ring bulks (slit-TFMs) are tightly stacked with TFM cylinders (full-TFMs), and state-of-the-art numerical simulations were used to investigate the magnetic and mechanical properties in detail during and after magnetization. A maximum value of the magnetic field gradient product of B z ��� d B z / d z = 6040 T2 m���1 was obtained after conventional field cooled magnetization (FCM) with an applied field, B app, of 10 T of the HG-TFM with 60 mm in outer diameter and 10 mm in inner diameter. This value may be the highest value ever reported compared to any other magnetic sources. The B z ��� d B z / d z value increased with decreasing inner diameter of the HG-TFM and with increasing B app during FCM. The electromagnetic stress in the HG-TFM during the FCM process mainly results from the hoop stress along the circumferential direction. The simulations suggested that there is no fracture risk of the bulk components during FCM from 10 T in a proposed realistic configuration of the HG-TFM where both TFM parts are mounted in Al-alloy rings and the whole HG-TFM is encapsulated in a steel capsule. A quasi-zero gravity space can be realized in the HG-TFM with a high B z ��� d B z / d z value in an open space outside the vacuum chamber. We present a simple liquid-assisted processing (LAP) method, to be used in situ during pulsed laser deposition growth to give both rapid growth rates (50 Hz deposition leading to >250 nm min���1 with a single plume) and strong pinning (improved ��5���10 at 30 K and below, over plain standard YBCO films grown at similar rates). Achieving these two important features simultaneously has been a serious bottleneck to date and yet for applications, it is critical to overcome it. The new LAP method uses a non-stoichiometric target composition, giving rise to a small volume fraction of liquid phase during film growth. LAP enhances the kinetics of the film growth so that good crystalline perfection can be achieved at up to 60�� faster growth rates than normal, while also enabling artificial pinning centres to be self-assembled into fine nanocolumns. In addition, LAP allows for RE mixing (80% of Y with 20% of Yb, Sm, or Yb + Sm), creating effective point-like disorder pinning centres within the rare earth barium cuprate lattice. Overall, LAP is a simple method for use in pulsed laser deposition, and it can also be adopted by other in situ physical or vapour deposition methods (i.e. MOCVD, evaporation, etc) to significantly enhance both growth rate and performance., Grant from SuNAM Co. The production of large (RE)Ba–Cu–O single grains ((RE)BCO), where RE = Y, Gd or Sm, of complex geometries is presently limited by the intrinsic slowness of the grain growth process. Additionally, the shapes achievable using established melt processing are constrained by the small number of post-processing techniques available. These materials are brittle and hard, which makes machining a difficult task and largely eliminates the possibility of producing highly intricate shapes. An alternative to this slow and inflexible growth process would be to join many small single grains to form one large composite grain, connected by high-performance superconducting joints. A reliable joining technique would also overcome the need for the careful and time-consuming post-growth machining processes. In this work we report on the use of single grain YBCO–Ag as an interface medium to achieve superconducting joints between (RE)BCO bulks. This joining technique is relatively quick and does not require tight process parameter control as there is no need to re-grow the interface joining material. We report on six joints produced from samples cut and joined in a variety of orientations. In addition, a joint was produced using bulk YBCO from two independent single grains. The trapped field properties of the resulting joined sample were measured and the microstructure at the joint was examined. We show that this simple but effective joining technique makes it possible to produce multiple composite grains with comparable superconducting properties to those of a single grain of the same size.

The main structural component of wood fibers is cellulose, which, being highly hydrophilic, interacts with water. Cellulose-based paper has, therefore, the same affinity with water. However, for most products such as decorative paper, this is more of a disadvantage, where water uptake both as liquid and from humid air not only weakens the paper by breaking hydrogen bonds but also alters its dimension and stability over time. The dimensional stability (ability of the paper to retain the size as its moisture content changes) is a critical parameter when the paper is submitted to printing, copying, and converting operations. Humidity can cause sheet wrinkling or warping, thus compromising the processability and the results achievable. The modification of fibers with chemical additives can be a way to improve the performance of paper against water and water vapor uptake. For this reason, several tests of horizontal diffusion of solvents were carried out to evaluate the change in uptake of as-is paper and of papers modified by several different chemical treatments. Solvent uptake tests were performed to assess the interaction of chemically treated and untreated papers with water, dichloromethane, and ethanol. Diffusion mechanisms of the solvents flow within the fiber networks and their movement through the porous solids were analyzed. The chemical treatments of the fiber with silane, siloxane, and polyelectrolyte multilayer were found to considerably influence both solvent contact angles and absorption times of the papers, thus affecting the rate of solvent (more interestingly, of the water) diffusion into the fiber wall. By comparing all the treated and untreated samples, the contact angles with the solvents decreased by performing siloxane, oligo-siloxane, and silane treatments. More specifically, the diffusivity rates of water decreased because of the disappearance of a fraction of the hydrophilic sites and the onset of higher crystallinity regions on the paper sheets.

A novel miniaturized and sustainable platform exploiting two merged paper-based substrates has been applied for the programmable pre-concentration of analytes of interest and electrochemical detection of mercury traces in drinking water using printable sensor strips. This strategy represents a novel versatile possibility in merging humble materials maximizing their impacts on analytical and remediation challenges.

Cellulosic nanomaterials are in the focus of academia and industry to realize light-weight biobased materials with remarkable strength. While the effect is well known, the distribution of these nanomaterials are less explored, particularly for paper sheets. Here, we explore the 3D distribution of micro and nanosized cellulosic particles in paper sheets and correlate their extent of fibrillation to the distribution inside the sheets and subsequently to paper properties. To overcome challenges with contrast between the particles and the matrix, we attached probes on the cellulose nano/microparticles, either by covalent attachment of fluorescent dyes or by physical deposition of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The increased contrast enabled visualization of the micro and nanosized particles inside the paper matrix using multiphoton microscopy, X-ray microtomography and SEM-EDX. The results indicate that fibrillary fines enrich at pores and fiber-fiber junctions, thereby increasing the relative bonded area between fibers to enhance paper strength while CNF seems to additionally form an inner 3D network.

Flexible electronics products have attracted wide attention because of their excellent flexibility, conductivity and stability. In this study, the liquid phase reduction method was used to in situ reduce fractal-structured silver particles (FSSPs) on cellulose surface to prepare conductive paper with excellent conductivity, and good stability and flexibility. The experimental results show that when the mass ratio of silver to cellulose was 1.5:1, the sheet resistance of conductive paper is as low as 0.02 Ω·sq−1, and the conductivity reaches 1041.33 S cm−1, which shows excellent conductivity. In order to expand the application of conductive paper in the field of flexible wearable electronic products, the mechanical stability and oxidation resistance of conductive paper were tested. The results show that the conductive paper has good stability and is expected to replace the flexible electronics products made of plastic.

The top-seeded infiltration growth (TSIG) processing technique can provide a more homogeneous microstructure and therefore more uniform superconducting properties than samples grown using conventional melt growth processes. In the present investigation, the properties of bulk, single grain superconductors processed by TSIG and magnetised by the pulsed-field magnetisation technique using a copper-wound solenoid have been studied. A trapped field of ∼3 T has been achieved in a 2-step buffer-assisted TSIG-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) sample at 40 K by magnetising the bulk superconductor completely via a single-pulse magnetisation process. Samples were also subjected to pulsed-field magnetisation at 65 K and by conventional field-cooled magnetisation at 77 K for comparison. Good correlation was observed between the microstructures, critical current densities and trapped field performance of bulk samples fabricated by TSIG and magnetised by pulsed-field and field-cooled magnetisation. The homogeneous distribution of Y2BaCuO5 inclusions within the microstructure of bulk YBCO samples fabricated by the 2-step buffer-assisted TSIG process reduces inhomogeneous flux penetration into the interior of the sample. This, in turn, results in a lower temperature rise of the bulk superconductor during the pulsed-field magnetisation process and a more effective and reliable magnetisation process.

The high-Tc superconducting (HTS) dynamo is a promising device that can inject large DC supercurrents into a closed superconducting circuit. This is particularly attractive to energise HTS coils in NMR/MRI magnets and superconducting rotating machines without the need for connection to a power supply via current leads. It is only very recently that quantitatively accurate, predictive models have been developed which are capable of analysing HTS dynamos and explain their underlying physical mechanism. In this work, we propose to use the HTS dynamo as a new benchmark problem for the HTS modelling community. The benchmark geometry consists of a permanent magnet rotating past a stationary HTS coated-conductor wire in the open-circuit configuration, assuming for simplicity the 2D (infinitely long) case. Despite this geometric simplicity the solution is complex, comprising time-varying spatially-inhomogeneous currents and fields throughout the superconducting volume. In this work, this benchmark problem has been implemented using several different methods, including H-formulation-based methods, coupled H-A and T-A formulations, the Minimum Electromagnetic Entropy Production method, and integral equation and volume integral equation-based equivalent circuit methods. Each of these approaches show excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement for the open-circuit equivalent instantaneous voltage and the cumulative time-averaged equivalent voltage, as well as the current density and electric field distributions within the HTS wire at key positions during the magnet transit. A critical analysis and comparison of each of the modelling frameworks is presented, based on the following key metrics: number of mesh elements in the HTS wire, total number of mesh elements in the model, number of degrees of freedom (DOFs), tolerance settings and the approximate time taken per cycle for each model., 22 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

A backward computation method has been developed to accelerate modelling of the critical state magnetization current in a staggered-array bulk high-temperature superconducting (HTS) undulator. The key concept is as follows: i) a large magnetization current is first generated on the surface of the HTS bulks after rapid field-cooling (FC) magnetization; ii) the magnetization current then relaxes inwards step-by-step obeying the critical state model; iii) after tens of backward iterations the magnetization current reaches a steady state. The simulation results show excellent agreement with the H-formulation method for both the electromagnetic and electromagnetic-mechanical coupled analyses, but with significantly faster computation speed. Solving the FEA model with 1.8 million degrees of freedom (DOFs), the backward computation method takes less than 1.4 hours, an order of magnitude or higher faster than other state-of-the-art numerical methods. Finally, the models are used to investigate the influence of the mechanical stress on the distribution of the critical state magnetization current and the undulator field along the central axis., 12 pages, 7 figures

Separator is a vital component of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its important roles in the safety and electrochemical performance of the batteries. Herein, we reported a cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) reinforced pure cellulose paper (CCP) as a LIBs separator fabricated by a facile filtration process. The nanosized CNFs played crucial roles as a tuner to optimize the pore size of the as-prepared CCP, and also as a reinforcer to improve the mechanical strength of the resultant CCP. Results showed that the tensile strength of the CCP with 20 wt.% CNFs was 227 % higher compared to the commercial cellulose separator. In addition, the lithium cobalt oxide/lithium metal battery assembled with CCP separator displayed better cycle performance and working stability (capacity retention ratio of 91 % after 100 cycles) compared to the batteries with cellulose separator (52 %) and polypropylene separator (84 %) owing to the multiple synergies between CCP separator and electrolytes.

Stacks of superconducting tapes can trap much higher magnetic fields than conventional magnets. This makes them very promising for motors and generators. However, ripple magnetic fields in these machines present a cross-field component that demagnetizes the stacks. At present, there is no quantitative agreement between measurements and modeling of cross-field demagnetization, mainly due to the need of a 3D model that takes the end effects and real micron-thick superconducting layer into account. This article presents 3D modeling and measurements of cross-field demagnetization in stacks of up to 5 tapes and initial magnetization modeling of stacks of up to 15 tapes. 3D modeling of the cross-field demagnetization explicitly shows that the critical current density, $J_c$, in the direction perpendicular to the tape surface does not play a role in cross-field demagnetization. When taking the measured anisotropic magnetic field dependence of $J_c$ into account, 3D calculations agree with measurements with less than 4 % deviation, while the error of 2D modeling is much higher. Then, our 3D numerical methods can realistically predict cross-field demagnetization. Due to the force-free configuration of part of the current density, J, in the stack, better agreement with experiments will probably require measuring the Jc anisotropy for the whole solid angle range, including $J$ parallel to the magnetic field., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures

The magnitude of the maximum trapped magnetic field in a bulk, single-grain superconductor is a key performance figure of merit. This is determined, generally, by the magnitude of the critical current density, J c , and the length scale over which it flows. As with all type-II superconductors, J c is related closely to the microstructure of the superconducting material and, in the case of RE–Ba–Cu–O [(RE)BCO, where RE is a rare-earth element or yttrium] single grains, RE2BaCuO5 (RE-211) inclusions in the superconducting REBa2Cu3O7−δ (RE-123) phase matrix are key microstructural features that act effectively as flux pinning centres. Although the distribution of RE-211 in single-grain bulk superconductors has been studied extensively, the variation of J c within a given sample has been much investigated much less thoroughly. A detailed experimental understanding of the variation of J c in these technologically important materials, therefore, is required given the growing popularity and significance of numerical techniques for modelling the behaviour of type-II bulk superconductors. Here we report a systematic investigation of the correlation between Gd-211 particle density and sample porosity, which are microstructural features, and T c and J c in a Gd–Ba–Cu–O bulk, single grain fabricated using a buffer layer and a supply of additional liquid phase. This was performed by cutting the sample into numerous sub-specimens of approximate dimensions 1.8 × 2.8 × 1.5 mm3. We observe that J c decreases with distance from the seed, although more strongly with distance along the c-axis than along the a–b plane. In contrast to what might be expected given the assumed contribution of RE-211 inclusions to flux pinning, we find no evidence of a clear correlation between the local RE-211 precipitate density and local critical current on a length scale of mm. We observe that the porosity of the sample is a more dominant factor in determining the distribution of J c within a single grain.

Dynamic resistance can be observed in a superconducting tape carrying a DC current which is exposed to an oscillating magnetic field. This effect is attributed to the interaction between the transport current and moving fluxons, and can occur in various superconducting components including high temperature superconducting (HTS) flux pumps, fast-ramping magnets and HTS rotating machines. Although conventionally expressed in terms of a DC ‘resistance,’ the phenomenon is inherently transient in nature, and the voltage drop across the superconductor follows a time-dependent periodic waveform. Here we present experimental measurements of the dynamic resistance of different REBCO tapes carrying a DC current and exposed to an oscillating perpendicular field. Measurements of both the transient voltage waveforms and the time-averaged DC resistances are compared with numerical finite element simulations obtained using the H-formulation. We observe clear variations between the voltage response from different tapes, which can be understood in terms of their differing J c(B, θ) dependence. In particular, a key feature of the experimentally measured waveforms is the emergence of a split ‘double peak’ at higher applied fields. Graphical visualisations of the finite element data show that this coincides with a periodic increase in J c(B, θ) throughout the tape. This occurs during each cycle at those times when the applied field falls below the shielding threshold of the tape (as the penetrating field within the tape then approaches zero). Our findings show that models which assume a constant J c irrespective of local field strength cannot capture the full range of behaviour observed by experiment. This emphasises the importance of employing experimentally measured J c(B, θ) data when simulating transient effects in HTS materials.

Waste paper is a major contributor to municipal and industrial waste, and its recycle and reuse are a current challenge. The aim of this research is to convert waste paper into value-added cellulose films through rapid dissolution in pre-cooled H2SO4 aqueous solution. Two types of waste paper, office paper and cardboard, could be dissolved within 210 s. The regenerated office paper films were transparent, and exhibited excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength: 77.55 ± 6.52 MPa, elongation at break: 2.67 ± 0.30 %, and Young’s modulus: 5451.67 ± 705.23 MPa), which were comparable to those of cellulose films prepared from spruce pulp in the same solvent. The mixed paper films showed a dramatically reduced UV transmittance due to the existence of lignin. Moreover, the regenerated films were a promising matrix to load antimicrobial compounds, and thus inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, this work provides a convenient way to directly convert waste paper into biodegradable antimicrobial packaging materials.

A functional biopolymer-coated paper was prepared by coating a ternary blend of the alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and carrageenan with grapefruit seed extract (GSE) for the substitute use of synthetic polymer-coated paper. The microstructure of the surface and cross-section of the coated paper analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) indicated that the biopolymer was compatible with the base paper and filled the pores of the porous fiber to make a smooth-surfaced coating paper. The properties of the biopolymer-coated paper, such as water and oil resistance, water vapor barrier, surface hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties, increased significantly compared with not only the base paper but also commercially used PE-coated paper. The blended biopolymer coating material exhibited strong antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogenic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli, which were destroyed completely within 3 and 9 h, respectively. The packaging test for a minced fish cake packed with the biopolymer-coated paper showed the complete destruction of surface inoculated bacteria in 6–9 days. The biopolymer-coated paper showed a high potential for disposable food packaging applications to increase the shelf-life of packaged food.

The Used Disposal Paper Cups (UDPCs) have become a concern to the solid waste management sector as scientists triggered the problems in recent years, to proceed forward in developing the process for this issue. Based on this concern, the present study emphasizes on the isolation of a novel bio-eco based Cellulose NanoCrystals (CNCs) from UDPCs through citric acid hydrolysis. The effect of acid concentration on microstructure and yield of CNCs are highlighted. The optimized yield (55 wt.%) has an appearance of rod-like structure with a width of 13.7 ± 0.6 nm which results due to 76 wt.% of acid hydrolyzed CNCs. The colloidal stability, crystallinity index, presence of functional groups and elemental composition in CNCs (76 wt.%) were identified by employing zeta potential, XRD, conductometric test and FTIR techniques. Finally, the thermal stability of CNCs (76 wt.%) was investigated by thermo-gravimetric analysis.

This study aimed to develop an eco-friendly flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for in-situ detection of pesticides using biodegradable bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). Plasmonic silver nanoparticle- bacterial nanocellulose paper (AgNP-BNCP) composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration. After loading AgNPs into BNC hydrogel, AgNPs were trapped firmly in the network of nanofibrous BNCP upon ambient drying process, resulting in 3D SERS hotspots within a few-micron depth on the substrate. The fabricated AgNP-BNCPs exhibited high SERS activity with good reproducibility and stability as demonstrated by the detection of 4-aminothiophenol and methomyl pesticide. Due to the optical transparency of BNCP, a direct and rapid detection of methomyl on fruit peels using AgNP-BNCPs can be achieved, demonstrating a simple and effective 'paste-and-read' SERS approach. These results demonstrate potential of AgNP-BNCP composites for user-friendly in-situ SERS analysis.

A chemosensor containing an o-hydroxyaniline unit as the reaction site was developed for colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of phosgene, which showed fast response (15 s), high specificity, and an extremely low detection limit. The chemosensor was incorporated into paper strips for visual detection of phosgene vapor.

To obtain chitosan (CTS) with narrower molecular weight distribution, CTS with weight-average molecular weight (MW) of 197.30 kDa was first metal complexed and then degraded into five CTSs with MW of 107.90, 56.48, 10.40, 5.67 (CTS-4) and 3.66 kDa. Decrease of MW did not cause a significant change in chemical structure of the residue CTS, but the crystal structure was transformed significantly. The moisture retention increased firstly and then decreased as the MW of CTS decreased. CTS-4 was superior to CTSs with other MW and propylene glycol in terms of the moisture retention. The lower water activity and increase of net isosteric heat were observed in CTS-4, which was due to the migration of immobilized water to a bound-state caused by mounting newly formed chain-end hydrophilic groups per unit weight. CTS-4 could effectively improve moisture retention, showing a potential to substitute commonly used humectant such as propylene glycol.

Self-assembled micrometer-scale vesicles composed of lamellar phase forming amphiphiles are useful as chemical microreactors, as minimal artificial cells, as protocell mimics for studies of the origins of life, and as vehicles for the targeted delivery of drugs. Given their varied uses, discovery of a universal mechanism that is simple, rapid, and that produces vesicles from a large variety of amphiphiles with different chemical and physical properties at high yield is extremely desirable. Here we show that cellulose, in the form of cellulose paper, facilitates the assembly of membranous vesicles 5-20 μm in diameter from scientifically and technologically important amphiphiles of diverse chemical structures and functionality such as fatty acids (fatty acid vesicles), amphiphilic diblock copolymers, and amphiphilic triblock copolymers (polymersomes). Assembly of vesicles occurred within 90 min of placing the amphiphile-coated cellulose paper into aqueous solutions. Varying thermal and chemical conditions, however, are required for the high-yield assembly of vesicles from the different amphiphiles. The vesicles, when attached to cellulose fibers, have membranes that remain unsealed. This topological characteristic of the vesicles grown on paper allowed the scalable separation of the process of growth from the process of loading cargo (temporally decoupled growth and loading). We demonstrate a temporally decoupled process to rapidly produce large quantities of protein-loaded polymersomes on the benchtop by using high temperatures to accelerate the growth of the polymersomes and subsequently milder temperatures during diffusive loading of the protein cargo.

Development of a foam-formed cellulose filter paper with high wet strength was carried out for application as a drinking water filter. The wet strength and antimicrobial activity of cellulose foam paper against several bacteria species (Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441 (Gram +ve), B. cereus NCDC 240 (Gram +ve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCDC 105 (Gram -ve), Klebsiella pneumonia NCDC 138 (Gram -ve), and Escherichia coli MTCC 40 (Gram -ve)) were investigated. The morphology and structure of the cellulose foam paper were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of our study confirmed that glutaraldehyde solution or 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) added to cellulose foam paper pretreated with cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) provided very high and stable wet strength performance together with excellent antimicrobial properties.

Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) paper has various applications due to its unique advantages. Herein, we present the intrinsic mechanical properties of CNF papers, along with the preparation and properties of nanoparticle-reinforced CNF composite papers. The literature on CNF papers reveals a strong correlation between the intrafibrillar network structure and the resulting mechanical properties. This correlation is found to hold for all primary factors affecting mechanical properties, indicating that the performance of CNF materials depends directly on and can be tailored by controlling the intrafibrillar network of the system. The parameters that influence the mechanical properties of CNF papers were critically reviewed. Moreover, the effect on the mechanical properties by adding nanofillers to CNF papers to produce multifunctional composite products was discussed. We concluded this article with future perspectives and possible developments in CNFs and their bionanocomposite papers.

Paper-based packaging generally has poor performances in the gas/oil barriers. This work reports a paper-based packaging material prepared via the modification of conventional papers with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN)/cationic guar gum (CGG) hydrogel film. Specifically, the hydrogel film modification was realized through a layer-by-layer deposition on paper. The hydrogel film modification significantly improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the paper. Specifically, the 4-layer hydrogel film modified paper showed a tensile strength of 34.03 MPa and a burst strength of 510 kPa, respectively. In contrast, the unmodified paper exhibited a tensile strength of 26.78 MPa and a bursting strength of 388 kPa. The packaging performance of this TOCN/CGG hydrogel film modified paper was demonstrated via the fresh mooncake packaging test. Such hydrogel film not only provided the oil resistance, but also maintained the mooncake's freshness. This material can serve as a green and sustainable food packaging.

The aim of this study was to prepare cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) from wastepaper powder (WPP), as an environmentally friendly approach for obtaining the source material, which is a highly available and low-cost precursor for cellulose nanomaterial processing. Acid hydrolysis and calcification treatments were employed for extraction of CNWs and preparation of novel phospho-calcified cellulose nanowhiskers (PCCNWs). CNWs and PCCNWs were analyzed through optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transformed infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Cell behaviors in the presence of CNWs and PCCNWs were studied by MTT assay and live-dead staining. Finally, the effect of these particles on osteogenic differentiation of stem cells was evaluated based on alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), calcium mineralization as well as von Kossa and alizarin red staining. Based on the results, PCCNWs had a positive effect on osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and can be used for developing new approaches for bone tissue engineering.

In bone tissue engineering (BTE), most of the currently developed scaffolds still lack the ability to demonstrate high porosity and high mechanical strength simultaneously or the ability to maintain bioactivity and sustained release of loaded biofactors. In this work, we constructed an anisotropic triple-pass tubular framework within a lyophilized porous GEL scaffold using FP, which was prepared by coating DEX-covered Whatman paper (WP) using the silk fibroin (SF) membrane with β-sheet conformation. This novel structural design endowed the functionalized paper frame (FPF)/scaffold implant high porosity, high mechanical strength, and sustained DEX delivery capability. Specifically, its porosity was as high as 88.2%, approximating that of human cancellous bone. The pore diameters of the implant ranged from 50 to 350 μm with an average pore diameter of 127.7 μm, indicating proper pore sizes for successful diffusion of essential nutrients/oxygen and bone tissue-ingrowth. Owing to the construction of double-network-like structure, the FPF/scaffold implant demonstrated excellent mechanical properties both in dry (174.7 MPa in elastic modulus and 14.9 MPa in compressive modulus) and wet states (59.0 MPa in elastic modulus and 3.3 MPa in compressive modulus), indicating its feasibility for in vivo implantation. Besides, the FPF/scaffold implant exhibited long-term DEX releasing behavior (over 50 days) with constant release rate in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Murine osteoblasts MC3T3-E1 cultured in the porous FPF/scaffold implant had excellent viability. Furthermore, the cells cocultured with the FPF/scaffold implant showed positive proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and calcium deposition. Twenty-eight days after implantation, extensive osteogenesis was observed in the rats treated with the FPF/scaffold implants. The anisotropic triple-pass tubular framework of the FPF/scaffold implant demonstrates structural similarities to the long bone. Therefore, this novel FPF/scaffold implant could be a better alternative for long bone defect repair.
