The development of actuators for power sources is essential for the efficient manipulation of fluids in microfluidics systems. In this work, a capacitor-type three-layer paper actuator was fabricated by sandwiching a polyelectrolyte layer between two films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS). The paper actuator exhibited stable large electromechanical deformations in bilateral symmetry under alternating square-wave electric field. The actuation properties were examined in a function of voltage (±0.5, ±1, ±1.5, ±2, and ±2.5 V) and frequency (1, 0.5, 0.2, and 0.05 Hz). In addition, the PEDOT/PSS electrode films with different thicknesses were prepared, and the effects of actuator thickness on actuation properties were examined. As a result, it was found that the actuator displacement increased considerably with reducing actuator thickness. In addition, the actuator with a thickness of 48 μm demonstrated a maximum displacement of 5.8 mm at a voltage of 1.5 V and a frequency of 0.05 Hz. The proposed actuator can be potentially used in the development of power sources for micropumps and check valves of microfluidic devices.

The first discrete bimetallic europium(iii)/copper(ii) complex for the fast, sensitive and selective luminescent detection of both aqueous and gaseous hydrogen sulfide has been developed. The chemosensor displayed an impressive response time of 30 seconds and a low theoretical limit of detection (100 ppb) for gaseous hydrogen sulfide.

In the present article we report a new hybrid microfluidic device (hyFlow) comprising a disposable paper electrode and a three-dimensional (3D) printed plastic chip for the electrochemical detection of a magnetic bead-silver nanoparticle (MB-AgNP) bioconjugate. This hybrid device evolved due to the difficulty of incorporating micron-scale MBs into paper-only fluidic devices. Specifically, paper fluidic devices can entrap MB-containing conjugates within their cellulose or nitrocellulose fiber matrix. The hyFlow system was designed to minimize such issues and transport MB conjugates more efficiently to the electrochemical detection zone of the device. The hyFlow system retains the benefit of fluid transport by pressure-driven flow, however, no pump is required for its operation. The hyFlow device is capable of detecting either pre-formed MB-AgNP conjugates or conjugates formed in-situ formation. The detection limit of AgNPs using this device is 12 pM, which represents just 22 AgNPs per MB.

This paper reports the performance enhancement benefits in diamond turning of the silicon wafer by incorporation of the surface defect machining (SDM) method. The hybrid micromachining methods usually require additional hardware to leverage the added advantage of hybrid technologies such as laser heating, cryogenic cooling, electric pulse or ultrasonic elliptical vibration. The SDM method tested in this paper does not require any such additional baggage and is easy to implement in a sequential micro-machining mode. This paper made use of Raman spectroscopy data, average surface roughness data and imaging data of the cutting chips of silicon for drawing a comparison between conventional single-point diamond turning (SPDT) and SDM while incorporating surface defects in the (i) circumferential and (ii) radial directions. Complementary 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to analyse the cutting forces and the evolution of residual stress on the machined wafer. It was found that the surface defects generated in the circumferential direction with an interspacing of 1 mm revealed the lowest average surface roughness (Ra) of 3.2 nm as opposed to 8 nm Ra obtained through conventional SPDT using the same cutting parameters. The observation of the Raman spectroscopy performed on the cutting chips showed remnants of phase transformation during the micromachining process in all cases. FEA was used to extract quantifiable information about the residual stress as well as the sub-surface integrity and it was discovered that the grooves made in the circumferential direction gave the best machining performance. The information being reported here is expected to provide an avalanche of opportunities in the SPDT area for low-cost machining solution for a range of other nominal hard, brittle materials such as SiC, ZnSe and GaAs as well as hard steels.

Funder: CSC Cambridge Scholarship, In this study, we evaluate the suitability of using DC-biased aluminium resonators as low-frequency kinetic inductance detectors capable of operating in the frequency range of 50–120 GHz. Our analysis routine for supercurrent-biased resonators is based on the Usadel equations and gives outputs including density of states, complex conductivities, transmission line properties, and quasiparticle lifetimes. Results from our analysis confirm previous experimental observations on resonant frequency tuneability and retention of high quality factor. Crucially, our analysis suggests that DC-biased resonators demonstrate significantly suppressed superconducting density of states gap. Consequently these resonators have lower frequency detection threshold and are suitable materials for low-frequency kinetic inductance detectors.

The microstructure of green-emitting InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) samples grown at different temperatures was studied using cross-section scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and plan-view cathodoluminescence (CL). The sample with the lowest InGaN growth temperature exhibits microscale variations in the CL intensity across the sample surface. Using STEM analysis of such areas, the observed darker patches do not correspond to any observable extended defect. Instead, they are related to changes in the extent of gross-well width fluctuations in the QWs, with more brightly emitting regions exhibiting a high density of such fluctuations, whilst dimmer regions were seen to have InGaN QWs with a more uniform thickness.

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification or LAMP has been identified to be an efficient technology for point-of-care diagnostics. Paper-based LAMP technique has tremendous potential in replacing the existing tube-based technology as the manufacturing cost of a paper-based device is comparatively lower and easy-to-use. LAMP-based paper diagnostic device for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) detection is of extreme importance as it will help in early and rapid diagnosis of the affected patients. The fabrication of these devices requires assessment of design parameters on the extent of LAMP amplification reaction. Hence, CFD studies would be extremely beneficial from the design perspective. The current work presents an insight into the CFD simulations for LAMP amplification reaction on a porous paper membrane (nitrocellulose membrane). The convection-diffusion-reaction model is solved on a COMSOL Multiphysics 5.0 platform. Studies on effect of pore size, aspect ratio and initial DNA concentration on the extent of DNA amplification reaction have been carried out. The current paper-based technique is effective in detecting a minimum of 5 copies of DNA contrasting the previous semi-quantitative technique which demonstrated the detection of minimum 98 copies. Overall, the simulation results displayed almost 96% enhancement in the DNA amplification rate on paper membrane. The first part of paper deals with the base information about diagnostics of power transformers. In this part are presented differently insulating methods, for example method of recovery voltage method, method of polarization and depolarization currents and chromatographic analysis.The second part of paper deals use of method of frequency domain spectroscopy for oil power transformers. This method is used in analysis insulating condition of power transformer with system of oil-paper. It was found, that the results of these tests are highly impacted by the operating temperature during the experimental measurement. Moisture and conductivity between insulating paper and oil in an insulating system are highly dependent from temperature.In the other part, the paper presents experimental results of the frequency diagnostic measurement for a real single-phase traction transformer 110/27 kV at different operating temperatures and states (with oil and without).Finally in the last part, the paper presents comparing frequency insulating measurements among several the same single-phase transformers 110/27 kV.

Trapped-flux magnets comprising stacked superconducting tape constitute a promising development to increase the power density of electrical machines, whilst at the same time keeping the complexity required in their construction in manageable levels that allow their use in applications such as aircraft propulsion. However, the conditions in which superconducting stacks operate inside an electrical motor differ quite significantly from the materials characterization experiments commonly developed to model their behaviour. This work presents the results of studying the applicability of these devices as magnetic flux source in the rotor of synchronous machines considering the influence of whole magnetic circuit. Several aspects are assessed, such as flux harmonics, magnetization, losses and demagnetization. Analytical expressions, which provide limited accuracy but allow fast calculations, are used for this purpose. The results illustrate the different trade-offs that arise during the design of a synchronous electric motor using trapped-flux magnets.

Significance: For optical methods to accurately assess hemoglobin oxygen saturation in vivo, an independently verifiable tissue-like standard is required for validation. For this purpose, we propose three hemoglobin preparations and evaluate methods to characterize them. Aim: To spectrally characterize three different hemoglobin preparations using multiple spectroscopic methods and to compare their absorption spectra to commonly used reference spectra. Approach: Absorption spectra of three hemoglobin preparations in solution were characterized using spectroscopic collimated transmission: whole blood, lysed blood, and ferrous-stabilized hemoglobin. Tissue-mimicking phantoms composed of Intralipid, and the hemoglobin solutions were characterized using spatial frequency-domain spectroscopy (SFDS) and enhanced perfusion and oxygen saturation (EPOS) techniques while using yeast to deplete oxygen. Results: All hemoglobin preparations exhibited similar absorption spectra when accounting for methemoglobin and scattering in their oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin forms, respectively. However, systematic differences were observed in the fitting depending on the reference spectra used. For the tissue-mimicking phantoms, SFDS measurements at the surface of the phantom were affected by oxygen diffusion at the interface with air, associated with higher values than for the EPOS system. Conclusions: We show the validity of different blood phantoms and what considerations need to be addressed in each case to utilize them equivalently. This paper discusses the spectral sensitivity of the discoloration of historical rag paper simultaneously affected by Relative Humidity (RH) and Oxygen concentration [O2] in the ambient environment. Sacrificial samples were degraded using narrowband radiation sources centred at 450 nm, 525 nm, and 625 nm in combinations of RH and [O2] at two levels: 0% [O2] and 70% RH, 21% [O2] and 70% RH, 0% [O2] and 20% RH, and 21% [O2] and 20% RH. Diffuse reflectance was measured before and during the degradation experimental runs. Consistent qualitative results were obtained for the change in reflectance and the change in tristimulus total color change in CIELAB color space. In both cases, the increase of discoloration was modelled logarithmically over time. Among the three factors investigated in this research, wavelength of the radiation (Λ) was found to have the strongest effect. The radiation at 450 nm induced the most and fastest discoloration whereas the radiation at 625 nm induced the least and slowest discoloration. This spectral dependence was likely to be related to the photo energies at different wavelengths, but other factors were found to have played a role. Further analyses revealed that the main effects and the effects of the interactions between [O2] and Λ and between RH and Λ on the discoloration of historical rag paper were statistically significant. It suggests that managing the spectral power distribution of the radiation source can be crucial in the collection management.

Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper. This study provides a new framework for the preparation of high quality, multifunctional, environmentally friendly water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper substrates.

Paper is a material exhibiting a complex microstructure that is composed of a network of fibres at the micro-level. When subjected to external loading or variations in moisture conditions over different time scales, changes in strain that are non-linear with respect to time are observed at the sheet level (macro-scale). In order to investigate this time-dependent behavior of paper, a creep power law model is implemented within a finite element approach at the level of single fibres. This rate-dependent model is found to capture experimental results available in literature for single fibres with a good agreement (both quantitatively and qualitatively). Based on the identified model at the level of single fibres, the time-dependent hygro-mechanical response is upscaled towards the network scale. To this end, random model networks of ribbon shaped fibres are generated and their response is simulated. The network-scale response, emerging from the rate-dependent fibre model, demonstrates the ability to predict the response of networks subjected to relaxation at a constant moisture level. The developed numerical model predicts lower values of overall stress response in single fibres as compared to networks. Also, stress relaxation predicted by the rate-dependent model in the cross-direction of the networks is in agreement with the experimental observations. Therefore, one of the remarkable findings of the present work is that the developed rate-dependent model is robust enough to capture the sheet scale response also qualitatively. Significance: Numerous optical imaging and spectroscopy techniques are used to study the tissue-optical properties; the majority of them are limited in information regarding the penetration depth. A simple, safe, easily applicable diagnostic technique is required to get deeper tissue information in a multilayer structure. Aim: A fiber-based diffuse reflectance (DR) technique is used to extract and quantify the bottom layer absorption coefficients in two-layer (2L) tissue-mimicking solid phantoms. We determine the Indian black ink concentrations in a deep-hidden layer that is sandwiched between agar and silicone-based phantom layers. Approach: A fiber-based DR experiment was performed to study the optical properties of the tissue at higher penetration depth, with different fiber core diameters and a constant numerical aperture (0.5 NA). The optimal core diameter of the fiber was chosen by measuring solid phantoms. In 2L phantoms, the thickness of the top layer was kept 5.5 mm with a constant absorption and reduced scattering coefficients (μa = 0.045 mm − 1 and μs ′ = 2.622 mm − 1), whereas the absorption coefficients of the bottom layers were varied from 0.014 to 0.037 mm − 1 keeping the μs ′ the same as the top layer. A unique crossover point (Cp) was found in the DR intensity profile against distance. We examined the slope before and after the Cp. These two slopes indicate the difference between the optical properties of the top and bottom layers. Our technique got further verification, as we successfully determined the Cp with different Indian black ink concentrations, placed at the junction between the agar and silicone-based phantom layers. Results: The DR measurements were applied to 2L phantoms. Two different slopes were found in 2L phantoms compared to the one-layer (optical properties equal to the top layer of 2L). We extracted the slopes before and after the Cp in the 2L phantoms. The calculated absorption coefficients before the Cp were 0.014 ± 0.0004, 0.022 ± 0.0003, 0.028 ± 0.0003, and 0.036 ± 0.0014 mm − 1, and the absorption coefficients after the Cp were 0.019 ± 0.0013, 0.013 ± 0.0004, 0.014 ± 0.0006, and 0.031 ± 0.0001 mm − 1, respectively. The calculated absorption coefficients before the Cp were in good agreement with the optical properties of the bottom layer. The calculated absorption coefficients after the Cp were not the same as the top layer. Our DR system successfully determines the crossover points 12.14 ± 0.11 and 11.73 ± 0.15 mm for 70% and 100% ink concentrations placed at the junction of the agar and silicone layers. Conclusions: In a 2L tissue structure, the Cp depends on the absorption coefficients of top and bottom layers and the thickness of the top layer. With the help of the Cp and the absorption coefficients, one can determine the thickness of the top layer or vice versa. The slope value before the Cp in the DR profile allowed us to determine the absorption properties of the bottom layer instead of having the average behavior of the 2L phantom in the far detection range (11.0 to 17.0 mm).

Microfluidic paper-based sensors as a new type of microsample detection technology are widely used in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food safety testing. Inkjet printing has the advantages of simplicity, speed, flexibility, high resolution, low cost, and efficient mass production and has become one of the most cutting-edge technologies in the manufacture of paper-based sensors. In this work, a fully inkjet printing preparation method was proposed for paper-based sensors, which can achieve high-precision, multichannel, and visual fluorescence detection. Three kinds of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs; r-CDs, b-CDs, and y-CDs) were fabricated into inkjet ink by adding a suitable ratio of solvent, PEG, and surfactant FS3100 to control its viscosity, surface tension, and other influencing factors, obtaining the best-visualized fluorescence response on paper. To optimize the full inkjet printing process of the paper-based sensor, we studied the influence of factors such as the hydrophobic material AKD formula, postprocessing conditions, and the structure of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic channels on the paper-based detection accuracy, and it was found that proper AKD concentration, curing time, and temperature can make AKD fully react with paper-based surface groups and produce more hydrophobic groups on the surface and inside of the filter paper, which can form paper-based microfluidic sensors with clear boundaries and fast transmission speed at low cost and high efficiency. The fabricated sensor is used for the fluorometric determination of vitamin C (AA), NO2-, and sunset yellow (SY) at the same time, and the limits of visual detection by eyes are 6 mmol/L (NO2-), 60 μmol/L (SY), and 40 mmol/L (AA). The mechanism of inkjet printing is investigated in detail, which is simple, reliable, and easy to realize mass production and can realize highly sensitive, on-site, and visual detection for food additives.

Significance: Two-photon microscopy has become the standard platform for deep-tissue fluorescence imaging. However, the use of point scanning in conventional two-photon microscopy limits the speed of volumetric image acquisition. Aim: To obtain fast and deep volumetric images, we combine two-photon light sheet fluorescence microscopy (2p-LSFM) and axicon imaging that yields an extended depth of field (DOF) in 2p-LSFM. Approach: Axicon imaging is achieved by imposing an axicon lens in the detection part of LSFM. Results: The DOF with axicon imaging is extended more than 20-fold over that of a conventional imaging lens, liberating the synchronized scanning in LSFM. We captured images of dynamic beating hearts and red blood cells in zebrafish larvae at volume acquisition rates up to 30 Hz. Conclusions: We demonstrate the fast three-dimensional imaging capability of 2p-LSFM with axicon imaging by recording the rapid dynamics of physiological processes.

Numerous experimental studies in the field of mechanical processing of composite materials for individual materials and tools made it possible to formulate particular models for describing tool wear, changing its microgeometry during operation and predicting durability. There are significant difficulties in measuring current wear and recalculation in mathematical models, since they include a large number of parameters. This does not allow for simple technical control of cutting edge wear and predicting tool life. The formulation of the wear-contact problem of the tool tip and the material interaction during turning of reinforced composite plastics is presented. Based on known studies, it is assumed that wear occurs along the flank of the tool, and is accompanied by an asymmetric change in the geometry of its tip. A model of abrasive wear during sliding of a tool tip rear surface with a polymer composite reinforcement material and fracture products is considered. It is assumed that the wear law is hereditary and there is a linear dependence of the wear rate on the rate of contact interaction and pressure. Shear stresses through the contact pressure and the coefficient of friction nonlinearly depend on the operating time of the tool due to the change due to wear in the geometric shape of the tool and the processing parameters of the product over time. The volumetric wear factor is a tool run time function. It reflects the fact that the interaction of the “tool-workpiece” pair with time should, as it were, forget about the running-in stage, which has a high wear rate, and the fact that the dependence of wear on the load (contact pressure) is characterized by the presence of aftereffect. A simplified relationship is obtained for the wear law under the assumption that there is no change in the coefficient of friction, temperature and contact pressure over time. Ґрунтуючись на відомих дослідженнях, прийнято, що зношування має місце по задній поверхні інструменту, і супроводжується несиметричним зносом його вершини. Розглядається модель абразивного зношування при ковзанні задньої поверхні вершини інструменту з матеріалом армування полімерного композиту і продуктами руйнування. Передбачається, що закон зношування носить спадковий характер і має місце лінійна залежність швидкості зношування від швидкості контактної взаємодії та контактного тиску. Напруги зрізу через контактний тиск і коефіцієнт тертя нелінійно залежать від часу роботи інструменту через зміну внаслідок зносу геометричної форми інструменту і технологічних параметрів обробки виробу з часом. Одержано спрощене співвідношення закону зносу в припущенні відсутності зміни коефіцієнта тертя, температури і контактного тиску в часі. В кінцевому підсумку для опису закону зношування і передбачення стійкості інструменту необхідне знання ряду емпіричних постійних, значення яких визначаються зміною мікрогеометрії вершини інструменту в процесі взаємодії при обробці різанням.

The methodology of creating multifunctional acoustic automated devices has been further developed, it is based on the construction of simple algorithms for transforming and processing signals of measuring instruments. A differential acoustic method for controlling the physical and mechanical parameters of multilayer plates made of slag glass-ceramics has been investigated. A structural diagram of an automated device for measuring acoustic control of the ultimate compressive strength Rр of a controlled slag glass-ceramics plate is proposed. The option of automation of the measurement process considered in the article makes it possible to carry out measuring control of the strength characteristics for a relatively short period of time and by averaging the results of measurements of the physical and mechanical parameters of slag glass-ceramic plates, leads to a decrease in the values of random measurement errors and thereby contributes to an increase in the accuracy of measurements of physical and mechanical parameters of slag glass-ceramics products. The values of the relative increments of the attenuation coefficient ∆ƞ23/ƞ4were obtained, while the ranges of the values of the attenuation coefficient of a transmission of various waveforms of the piezoelectric transducer correspond to the ranges of the compressive strength Rр of the test sample. At the same time, the control of the strength of the material Rр at multiple frequencies is due to the fact that even a slight change in the geometric parameters of the slag glass-ceramics slab leads to a change in the generalized parameters of the universal transformation functions of the measuring differential acoustic devices, which are associated with the physical and mechanical characteristics of the controlled material of the sample The proposed two-parameter differential acoustic control method allows to keep in mind the linkage between temperature and mechanical parameters: the unequal distribution of the temperature along the length of the sample and the uneven distribution deformation of temperature with the localization of this plastic component in the middle part of the slag glass-ceramics plate, which is most significantly affected by temperature and, as a consequence, is subject to gradual destruction., Знайшла подальший розвиток методологія створення багатофункціональних акустичних автоматизованих пристроїв, яка заснована на побудові простих алгоритмів перетворення та обробки сигналів засобів вимірювань. Запропоновано структурну схему автоматизованого пристрою для вимірювального акустичного контролю межи міцності на стиск Rр шлакоситалової плити, яка контролюється. Розглянутий у статті варіант автоматизації процеса вимірювального контролю, надає змогу щодо визначення міцнісних характеристик за відносно короткий проміжок часу та завдяки усередненню результатів вимірювань фізико-механічних параметрів шлакоситалових плит, призводить до зменшення випадкових похибок вимірювань та тим самим сприяє підвищенню точності вимірювань фізико-механічних параметрів шлакоситалових виробів. Отримано значення відносних прирощень коефіцієнта згасання ∆ƞ23/ƞ4, при цьому діапазони змінення значень коефіцієнта згасання пакетів хвиль акустичного пристрою, відповідають діапазонам змінення межи міцності на стиск Rр досліджуваного зразка шлакоситалової плити. При цьому, контроль міцності матеріалу Rр на кратних частотах, пов'язаний з тим, що навіть незначна зміна геометричних параметрів шлакоситалової плити, призводить до змінення узагальнених параметрів універсальних функцій перетворення вимірювального диференціального акустичного пристрою, які пов'язані з фізико-механічними характеристиками матеріалу зразка, що контролюється. Запропонований двопараметровий диференціальний акустичний метод контролю надає змогу враховувати зв'язок поміж важливими експлуатаційними температурними та механічними параметрами: нерівномірністю розподілу температури за довжиною зразка та неоднорідністю розподілу температурної деформації з локалізацією ії пластичної складової у середній частині шлакоситалової плити, яка найбільш суттєво піддається температурному впливу та як наслідок піддається повільному руйнуванню.

We investigated the use of dielectric layers produced by atomic layer deposition (ALD) as an approach to strain mitigation in composite silicon/superconductor devices operating at cryogenic temperatures. We show that the addition of an ALD layer acts to reduce the strain of spins closest to silicon/superconductor interface where strain is highest. We show that appropriately biasing our devices at the hyperfine clock transition of bismuth donors in silicon, we can remove strain broadening and that the addition of ALD layers left T 2 (or temporal inhomogeneities) unchanged in these natural silicon devices.

Transition-edge sensors (TESs) are capable of highly accurate single particle energy measurement. TESs have been used for a wide range of photon detection applications, particularly in astronomy, but very little consideration has been given to their capabilities as electron calorimeters. Existing electron spectrometers require electron filtering optics to achieve energy discrimination, but this step discards the vast majority of electrons entering the instrument. TESs require no such energy filtering, meaning they could provide orders of magnitude improvement in measurement rate. To investigate the capabilities of TESs in electron spectroscopy, a simulation pipeline has been devised. The pipeline allows the results of a simulated experiment to be compared with the actual spectrum of the incident beam, thereby allowing measurement accuracy and efficiency to be studied. Using Fisher information, the energy resolution of the simulated detectors was also calculated, allowing the intrinsic limitations of the detector to be separated from the specific data analysis method used. The simulation platform has been used to compare the performance of TESs with existing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysers. TESs cannot match the energy resolution of XPS analysers for high-precision measurements but have comparable or better resolutions for high count rate applications. The measurement rate of a typical XPS analyser can be matched by an array of 10 TESs with 120 microsecond response times and there is significant scope for improvement, without compromising energy resolution, by increasing array size., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

In this study, we describe a monolithic and fully integrated paper-based device for the simultaneous detection of three prognostic biomarkers in saliva. The pattern of the proposed multiplexed device is designed with a central sample deposition zone and three identical arms, each containing a pre-treatment and test zone. Its one-step fabrication is realized by CO2 laser cutting, providing remarkable parallelization and rapidity (ca. 5 s/device). The colorimetric detection is based on the sensitive and selective target-induced reshaping of plasmonic multibranched gold nanoparticles, which exhibit a clear spectral shift (and blue-to-pink color change) in case of non-physiological concentrations of the three salivary biomarkers. A rapid and multiplexed naked-eye or smartphone-based readout of the colorimetric response is achieved within 10 min. A prototype kit for POCT testing is also reported, providing robustness and easy handling of the device.

Pulping trials were carried out using MEA and the soda process comparing their pulping potentials. The operating conditions such as the concentration of the cooking liquor (50%, 75%, 100%) for MEA and (10%, 15%, 20%) for NaOH, the maximum cooking temperature (150oC, 160oC, 170oC) and cooking time (60, 90, 120minutes) for both processes were investigated systematically to establish optimal pulping conditions. The agro-biomass used in this investigation is Sugarcane Bagasse viewed as alternative raw material for pulp and paper production. The lignin content of Bagasse (19.5%) was low; indicating that Bagasse should be easier to pulp. The optimum cooking conditions (independent variables) for MEA pulping were 75% MEA concentration, 150oC cooking temperature and 90 minutes cooking time. Excel 2013 was used to analyze the effect of independent variables on yield of bagasse pulp and properties of furnished paper from MEA process in comparison with the Soda process which include tear index, tensile index, burst index and folding endurance with errors less than 15% in all cases. The Kappa number range (12.7-16.9), viscosity (270-870 ml/g) and brightness (62.1-93.2%) of bagasse pulp are appropriate for high-brightness printing and writing papers. The physical properties of furnished paper, tear index (13.4 mN.m2/g), tensile index (71Nm/g), Burst index (4.8 KN/g) and folding endurance (82) recommend the cellulosic pulp from Sugarcane Bagasse obtained from the MEA process for strengthening the virgin fiber in recycled papers and also for developing certain types of printing and packaging papers. Due to the awareness towards the negative impact of kraft mill’s effluent to the environment recently, soda pulping started to regain its popularity among the pulp mills especially non-wood based pulp mills. MEA process is more economically attractive given its high pulp yield, despite the significant increase in chemical demand for bleaching. MEA pulping is a good alternative to soda pulping furnishing high pulp yield with less cooking temperature, i.e. 150oC, thereby saving a considerable amount of energy with less odoriferous pollutants and pollution load associated with the soda process.

Significance: The recently reported solvent-based optical clearing method FDISCO can preserve various fluorescent signals very well. However, the strict low-temperature storage condition of FDISCO is not conducive to long-time or repetitive imaging usually conducted at room temperature. Therefore, it is important to solve the contradiction between fluorescence preservation and imaging condition. Aim: We develop a modified FDISCO clearing method, termed FDISCO+, to change the preservation condition from low temperature to room temperature. Approach: Two alternative antioxidants were screened out to effectively inhibit the peroxide generation in the clearing agent at room temperature, enabling robust fluorescence preservation of cleared samples. Results: FDISCO+ achieves comparable fluorescence preservation with the original FDISCO protocol and allows long-time storage at room temperature, making it easier for researchers to image and preserve the samples. Conclusions: FDISCO+ is expected to be widely used due to its loose operation requirements.

Significance: A non-destructive technique for accurately characterizing the spatial distribution of optical properties of soft tissue membranes may give improved outcomes in many tissue engineering applications. Aim: This study aimed to develop a non-destructive macroscopic imaging technique that is sensitive to optical anisotropy, typical of fibrous components in soft tissue membranes, and can address some of the difficulties caused by the complex turbid nature of these tissues. Approach: A near-infrared Mueller matrix imaging polarimeter employing logarithm decomposition was developed and used to conduct transmission measurements of all the polarization properties across the full thickness of bovine pericardium tissue. Results: The full Mueller matrix was measured across a 70 mm×70 mm sample of calf bovine pericardium and revealed significant retardance (linear and circular) and depolarization in this tissue. Regions with a uniform axis of optical anisotropy were identified. Mueller matrix imaging demonstrated that the exhibited circular retardance was sufficient to lead to possible misinterpretation of apparent fiber orientation when using conventional polarization imaging techniques for such tissues. Conclusions: Mueller matrix imaging can identify regional distributions of optical anisotropy in calf bovine pericardium. This new capability is a promising development in non-destructive imaging for tissue selection.

Significance: Complementary absorption and fluorescence contrast could prove useful for a wide range of biomedical applications. However, current absorption-based photoacoustic microscopy systems require the ultrasound transducers to physically touch the samples, thereby increasing contamination and limiting strong optical focusing in reflection mode. Aim: We sought to develop an all-optical system for imaging cells and tissues using the three combined imaging modalities: photoacoustic remote sensing (PARS), epifluorescence, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Approach: A PARS subsystem with ultraviolet excitation was used to obtain label-free absorption-contrast images of nucleic acids in ex vivo tissue samples. Co-integrated epifluorescence and CLSM subsystems were used to verify the 2D and 3D nuclei distribution. Results: Complementary absorption and fluorescence contrast were demonstrated in phantom imaging experiments and subsequent cell and tissue imaging experiments. Lateral and axial resolution of ultraviolet-PARS (UV-PARS) is shown to be 0.39 and 1.6 μm, respectively, with 266-nm light. CLSM lateral and axial resolution was measured as 0.97 and 2.0 μm, respectively. This resolution is sufficient to image individual cell layers with fine optical sectioning. UV-PARS images of cell nuclei are validated in thick tissue using CLSM. Conclusions: Multimodal absorption and fluorescence contrast are obtained with a non-contact all-optical microscopy system for the first time and utilized to obtain images of cells and tissues with subcellular resolution.

The remanent domain structures of composite element magnetic barcodes have been imaged using photo-emission electron microscopy with contrast from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD-PEEM) and analysed with reference to the results of micromagnetic simulations. The magnetisation configuration at the end of wide strips is found to be perpendicular to the majority magnetisation direction. This transitions to an incomplete rotation for nominal strip widths below 300 nm and is found to affect the mechanics of magnetisation reversal for nominal strip widths below 200 nm, owing to a difference in magnetisation orientation when an external magnetic field is applied that is just smaller than the magnetic coercivity of the structures and a corresponding change in reversal dynamics. This change in domain structure as strip width decreases is consistent with both the influence of shape anisotropy and with measurements of magnetic hysteresis. The magnetisation reversal characteristics of composite element structures are found to be dependent on the relative magnetisation configurations of neighbouring strips, which in turn are found to vary stochastically upon the application and removal of a magnetic field along the easy axis of the structure. It is found that the application of a canted field is necessary to ensure sharp, consistent magnetisation reversal of bits when writing a binary code. These results confirm that either improved lithography of narrower strips or non-rectangular elements would be necessary to further increase the number of individually programmable bits in a barcode.

Significance: The highest absorption peaks of the main components of bone are in the mid-infrared region, making Er:YAG and CO2 lasers the most efficient lasers for cutting bone. Yet, studies of deep bone ablation in minimally invasive settings are very limited, as finding suitable materials for coupling high-power laser light with low attenuation beyond 2 μm is not trivial. Aim: The first aim of this study was to compare the performance of different optical fibers in terms of transmitting Er:YAG laser light with a 2.94-μm wavelength at high pulse energy close to 1 J. The second aim was to achieve deep bone ablation using the best-performing fiber, as determined by our experiments. Approach: In our study, various optical fibers with low attenuation (λ=2.94 μm) were used to couple the Er:YAG laser. The fibers were made of germanium oxide, sapphire, zirconium fluoride, and hollow-core silica, respectively. We compared the fibers in terms of transmission efficiency, resistance to high Er:YAG laser energy, and bending flexibility. The best-performing fiber was used to achieve deep bone ablation in a minimally invasive setting. To do this, we adapted the optimal settings for free-space deep bone ablation with an Er:YAG laser found in a previous study. Results: Three of the fibers endured energy per pulse as high as 820 mJ at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The best-performing fiber, made of germanium oxide, provided higher transmission efficiency and greater bending flexibility than the other fibers. With an output energy of 370 mJ per pulse at 10 Hz repetition rate, we reached a cutting depth of 6.82±0.99 mm in sheep bone. Histology image analysis was performed on the bone tissue adjacent to the laser ablation crater; the images did not show any structural damage. Conclusions: The findings suggest that our prototype could be used in future generations of endoscopic devices for minimally invasive laserosteotomy.

A series of single InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) with a Si-doped InGaN underlayer were studied to investigate the impact of the underlayer on photoluminescence efficiency and recombination dynamics. The thickness of the GaN capping layer was varied between samples, which changed the electric field across the QW due to band bending near the surface. When directly exciting the wells, thermionic emission of carriers results in a rapid drop in the photoluminesence efficiency with increasing temperature such that no emission is observed above 100 K. However, exciting above the energy of the barriers caused the intensity of the QW emission to drop more slowly, with up to 12% of the 10 K emission intensity remaining at 300 K. This difference is attributed to hole transfer from the underlayer into the QW, which increases in efficiency at higher temperatures, and is enhanced by stronger electric fields present in the GaN barriers of samples with thinner GaN capping layers. Further, the sample with the narrowest cap layer of 2 nm has a different shape and characteristic time for its photoluminescence decay transient and a different emission energy temperature dependence than the other samples. This behaviour was ascribed to a change in carrier localisation for this sample due to a reversal of the net field across the well compared to the other samples.

Significance: Artificial skin (AS) is widely used in dermatology, pharmacology, and toxicology, and has great potential in transplant medicine, burn wound care, and chronic wound treatment. There is a great demand for high-quality AS product and a non-invasive detection method is highly desirable. Aim: To quantify the constructure parameters (i.e., thickness and surface roughness) of AS samples in the culture cycle and explore the growth regularities using optical coherent tomography (OCT). Approach: An adaptive interface detection algorithm is developed to recognize surface points in each A-scan, offering a rapid method to calculate parameters without constructing OCT B-scan pictures and further achieving realizing real-time quantification of AS thickness and surface roughness. Experiments on standard roughness plates and H&E-staining microscopy were performed as a verification. Results: As applied on the whole cycle of AS culture, our method’s results show that during the air–liquid culture, the surface roughness of the skin first decreases and then exhibits an increase, which implies coincidence with the degree of keratinization under a microscope. And normal and typical abnormal samples can be differentiated by thickness and roughness parameters during the culture cycle. Conclusions: The adaptive interface detection algorithm is suitable for high-sensitivity, fast detection, and quantification of the interface with layered characteristic tissues, and can be used for non-destructive detection of the growth regularity of AS sample thickness and roughness during the culture cycle.

Significance: Imaging biofluid flow under physiologic conditions aids in understanding disease processes and health complications. We present a method employing a microparallel plate strain induction chamber (MPPSIC) amenable to optical coherence tomography to track depth-resolved lateral displacement in fluids in real time while under constant and sinusoidal shear. Aim: Our objective is to track biofluid motion under shearing conditions found in the respiratory epithelium, first validating methods in Newtonian fluids and subsequently assessing the capability of motion-tracking in bronchial mucus. Approach: The motion of polystyrene microspheres in aqueous glycerol is tracked under constant and sinusoidal applied shear rates in the MPPSIC and is compared with theory. Then 1.5 wt. % bronchial mucus samples considered to be in a normal hydrated state are studied under sinusoidal shear rates of amplitudes 0.7 to 3.2 s−1. Results: Newtonian fluids under low Reynolds conditions (Re∼10−4) exhibit velocity decreases directly proportional to the distance from the plate driven at both constant and oscillating velocities, consistent with Navier–Stokes’s first and second problems at finite depths. A 1.5 wt. % mucus sample also exhibits a uniform shear strain profile. Conclusions: The MPPSIC provides a new capability for studying biofluids, such as mucus, to assess potentially non-linear or strain-rate-dependent properties in a regime that is relevant to the mucus layer in the lung epithelium.

Significance: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising optical technique. Besides optical properties of a sample, other sample physical properties also affect the recorded images. They are significantly affected by the sample curvature and sample surface to camera distance. A correction method to reduce the artifacts is necessary to reliably extract sample properties. Aim: Our aim is to correct hyperspectral images using the three-dimensional (3D) surface data and assess how the correction affects the extracted sample properties. Approach: We propose the combination of HSI and 3D profilometry to correct the images using the Lambert cosine law. The feasibility of the correction method is presented first on hemispherical tissue phantoms and next on human hands before, during, and after the vascular occlusion test (VOT). Results: Seven different phantoms with known optical properties were created and imaged with a hyperspectral system. The correction method worked up to 60 deg inclination angle, whereas for uncorrected images the maximum angles were 20 deg. Imaging hands before, during, and after VOT shows good agreement between the expected and extracted skin physiological parameters. Conclusions: The correction method was successfully applied on the images of tissue phantoms of known optical properties and geometry and VOT. The proposed method could be applied to any reflectance optical imaging technique and should be used whenever the sample parameters need to be extracted from a curved surface sample.

SignificanceSpeckle variations induced by intracellular motion (IM) in the urothelium was observed in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. It is feasible to use the IM as a dynamic contrast to segment the urothelium with only two sequential OCT images. This new method opens the possibility of tracking the distribution of the urothelial cells to identify the microinvasion of bladder tumors.ApproachWith fresh porcine bladder tissue, IM was analyzed by tracking speckle variations using autocorrelation function, then quantified with CONTINE algorism to identify the decorrelation time (DT) of the speckle variations. Variance analysis is conducted to show IM amplitude and distribution in the urothelium. The segmentation of the urothelium is demonstrated using tissue samples with and without significantly stretching.ResultsSignificant speckle variations induced by IM exists in the urothelium. However, the distribution of the IM is heterogeneous. The DTs are majorly distributed between 1ms to 30ms. Using the IM as a dynamic contrast, the urothelium can be accurately and exclusively segmented, even the layer structure of the bladder is invisible.ConclusionsWith fresh porcine bladders, we show that IM can be used as a dynamic contrast to exclusively segment the urothelium. This contrast may provide a new mechanism for OCT to diagnosis the invasion of urothelial cancerous cells for the better staging of bladder cancer.

Versatile sensing matrixes are essential for the development of enzyme-immobilized optical biosensors. A novel three-dimensional titanium dioxide nanotubes/alginate hydrogel scaffold is proposed for the detection of sweat biomarkers, lactate, and glucose in artificial sweat. Hydrothermally synthesized titanium dioxide nanotubes were introduced to the alginate polymeric matrix, followed by cross-linking nanocomposite with dicationic calcium ions to fabricate the scaffold platform. Rapid colorimetric detection (blue color optical signal) was carried out for both lactate and glucose biomarkers in artificial sweat at 4 and 6 min, respectively. The superhydrophilicity and the capillarity of the synthesized titanium dioxide nanotubes, when incorporated into the alginate matrix, facilitate the rapid transfer of the artificial sweat components throughout the sensor scaffold, decreasing the detection times. Moreover, the scaffold was integrated on a cellulose paper to demonstrate the adaptability of the material to other matrixes, obtaining fast and homogeneous colorimetric detection of lactate and glucose in the paper substrate when image analysis was performed. The properties of this new composite provide new avenues in the development of paper-based sensor devices. The biocompatibility, the efficient immobilization of biological enzymes/colorimetric assays, and the quick optical signal readout behavior of the titanium dioxide nanotubes/alginate hydrogel scaffolds provide a prospective opportunity for integration into wearable devices. A lignin-based PU coating was prepared for paper-based green packaging. Two representative diisocyanate were used to prepare the coatings. Due to the rigid aromatic, the physical properties of the TDI system reached the maximum below the lignin content of 40%. The HDI that contains flexible aliphatic chains alleviated the brittleness of coating, and it showed physical advantages when the lignin content was more than 50%. Owing to the high lignin content, the coating presented enhanced thermal stability. After coated with the lignin-based PU coatings, the dry tensile strength of coated paper was improved by 126%. Amazingly, the wet strength was increased from 0.31 to 12.6 MPa with an improvement nearly 40 times. Based on the coordination of lignin, Ag+ was introduced into the PU matrix, which imparted the coating with excellent antibacterial ability. The colony forming units of E. coli and S. aureus were both less than 1. However, no inhibition halo was observed, which indicated that the Ag was firmly anchored on the coating and the antibacterial ability is only available when the bacterial contact the coating surface. The lignin-based PU coating with favorable sustainability and properties shows great potential in paper-based green packaging fields.

In this work, Schottky diodes based on amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) were fabricated on cellulose microfiber paper substrate. Silver lines used as the Schottky barrier were printed, in parallel to thermally evaporated Cr/Au ohmic contact, using a dispense printer. The morphological and electrical characteristics of the devices are presented. The fabricated diodes exhibited rectification ratios ranging from 3.4 to 34.9 at ±1V with ON voltages that range from 1.1V to 1.4 V, for device lengths (Ag to Au distance) from 145 µm to 894 µm. The diodes were characterized in a temperature range between 25°C and 80°C. They showed a decrease of the ON current when increasing temperature, which is mainly attributed to the change of the cellulose microstructure. Indeed, an opposite of the ON current behavior was registered when the diode was realized on a polyimide substrate. The realized flexible paper-based diodes offer a potential promising choice for printed environmental-friendly electronics.

Significance: Spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) is a wide-field imaging technique that provides quantitative maps of tissue optical properties. We describe a compact SFDI imager that employs a multispectral compound-eye camera. This design enables simultaneous image acquisition at multiple wavelengths. Such a device has potential for application for quantitative evaluation of superficial tissues by nonspecialists in low-resource settings. Aim: The aim of this work was to develop a compact SFDI imager for widefield imaging of in-vivo tissue optical properties and verify its ability to measure optical properties of tissue-simulating phantoms and in a preclinical model of burn wounds. Approach: This compound-eye imager was constructed using a CMOS sensor subdivided into multiple regions, each having a bandpass filter and objective lens. The ability of the instrument to image optical properties was compared with (1) a commercial SFDI imager and (2) a laboratory-based system. Initial validation of ability to accurately characterize optical properties was performed using a tissue-simulating optical phantom. It was then applied to an established murine model of thermal contact burn severity. In-vivo measurements of the optical properties of rat skin were performed before and after the application of burns. Histology was used to verify burn severity. Results: Measurements of the tissue-simulating phantom optical properties made using the compound-eye imager agree with measurements made using the two comparison SFDI devices. For the murine burn model, the burns showed a decrease in the reduced scattering coefficient at all measurement wavelengths compared with preburn measurements at the same locations. This is consistent with previously reported changes in scattering that occur in full-thickness burns. Conclusion: We demonstrate the potential for SFDI to be translated into compact form factor using a compound-eye camera that is capable of obtaining multiple wavelengths channels simultaneously.

Significance: Diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging (DOSI) is a versatile technology sensitive to changes in tissue composition and hemodynamics and has been used for a wide variety of clinical applications. Specific applications have prompted the development of versions of the DOSI technology to fit specific clinical needs. This work describes the development and characterization of a multi-modal DOSI (MM-DOSI) system that can acquire metabolic, compositional, and pulsatile information at multiple penetration depths in a single hardware platform. Additionally, a 3D tracking system is integrated with MM-DOSI, which enables registration of the acquired data to the physical imaging area. Aim: We demonstrate imaging, layered compositional analysis, and metabolism tracking capabilities using a single MM-DOSI system on optical phantoms as well as in vivo human tissue. Approach: We characterize system performance with a silicone phantom containing an embedded object. To demonstrate multi-layer sensitivity, we imaged human calf tissue with a 4.8-mm skin-adipose thickness. Human thenar tissue was also measured using a combined broadband DOSI and continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy method (∼15 Hz acquisition rate). Results: High-resolution optical property maps of absorption (μa) and reduced scattering (μs ′ ) were recovered on the phantom by capturing over 1000 measurement points in under 5 minutes. Significance: The ability of diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans is hindered by the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the method. This limits the high acquisition rates needed to resolve dynamic flow changes and to optimally filter out large pulsatile oscillations and prevents the use of large source-detector separations (≥3 cm), which are needed to achieve adequate brain sensitivity in most adult subjects. Aim: To substantially improve SNR, we have built a DCS device that operates at 1064 nm and uses superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPD). Approach: We compared the performances of the SNSPD-DCS in humans with respect to a typical DCS system operating at 850 nm and using silicon single-photon avalanche diode detectors. Results: At a 25-mm separation, we detected 13 ± 6 times more photons and achieved an SNR gain of 16 ± 8 on the forehead of 11 subjects using the SNSPD-DCS as compared to typical DCS. At this separation, the SNSPD-DCS is able to detect a clean pulsatile flow signal at 20 Hz in all subjects. With the SNSPD-DCS, we also performed measurements at 35 mm, showing a lower scalp sensitivity of 31 ± 6 % with respect to the 48 ± 8 % scalp sensitivity at 25 mm for both the 850 and 1064 nm systems. Furthermore, we demonstrated blood flow responses to breath holding and hyperventilation tasks. Conclusions: While current commercial SNSPDs are expensive, bulky, and loud, they may allow for more robust measures of non-invasive cerebral perfusion in an intensive care setting.

In this study, the employment of the X-ray irradiation as bioremediation method to treat parchment has been deeply investigated. In particular, the effect of the irradiation doses on the structural stability of collagen, the main constituent of parchment, has been evaluated on a series of modern parchment samples by means of different opto-thermal and spectroscopic techniques in order to obtain the dose-dependent effect of irradiation on collagen. Moreover, the long-term behavior of the irradiated parchment has been considered by analyzing the same series of samples after being hygrothermally artificially aged. Characterizations by light transmission analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the ultraviolet–visible–near infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) reflectance one have been performed for the identification of the radio-induced effect on the parchment structure even in a dose range much wider than the need for sterilization. The obtained results have proved the safeness of the method in the short and long term confirming the applicability of this emerging procedure.

International audience; Ultrasonic welding is a serious candidate in the development of methods to assemble papers and paperboards without using additional substances. However, the ultrasonic welding of papers remains a technological challenge considering the low weldability of lignocellulosic materials. This study aims to investigate on the ultrasonic welding process applied to papers in order to identify the processing conditions which favor the formation of strong welded joints. To reach such purpose, an experimental strategy was developed by combining the characterization of welded materials and the monitoring of process parameters. Experimentations were performed using a reference paper displaying a good weldability to specifically highlight the contribution of process parameters. Results indicate that the process is highly sensitive to vibration amplitude, power supplied by the high frequency generator, and sample thickness. Power seems to be a reliable indicator of the severity of the process. A strong decrease in the strength of the welded joints is observed when working with low thicknesses. It seems that the layers coated on top of papers are the main part of the material contributing in the development of adhesion at the welding joint. Overall, instrumenting the device has led to a better understanding of the ultrasonic welding of papers.

Here we focus on two popular subselection schemes applied to this end: CUR decomposition, derived from a low-rank approximation of the feature matrix, and farthest point sampling (FPS), which relies on the iterative identification of the most diverse samples and discriminating features. We modify these unsupervised approaches, incorporating a supervised component following the same spirit as the principal covariates (PCov) regression method. We show how this results in selections that perform better in supervised tasks, demonstrating with models of increasing complexity, from ridge regression to kernel ridge regression and finally feed-forward neural networks. We also present adjustments to minimise the impact of any subselection when performing unsupervised tasks. We demonstrate the significant improvements associated with PCov-CUR and PCov-FPS selections for applications to chemistry and materials science, typically reducing by a factor of two the number of features and samples required to achieve a given level of regression accuracy.

Significance: Collagen is the most abundant protein in vertebrates and is found in tissues that regularly experience tension, compression, and shear forces. However, the underlying mechanism of collagen fibril formation and remodeling is poorly understood. Aim: We explore how a collagen monomer is visualized using fluorescence microscopy and how its spatial orientation is determined. Defining the orientation of collagen monomers is not a trivial problem, as the monomer has a weak contrast and is relatively small. It is possible to attach fluorescence tags for contrast, but the size is still a problem for detecting orientation using fluorescence microscopy. Approach: We present two methods for detecting a monomer and classifying its orientation. A modified Gabor filter set and an automatic classifier trained by convolutional neural network based on a synthetic dataset were used. Results: By evaluating the performance of these two approaches with synthetic and experimental data, our results show that it is possible to determine the location and orientation with an error of ∼37 deg of a single monomer with fluorescence microscopy. Conclusions: These findings can contribute to our understanding of collagen monomers interaction with collagen fibrils surface during fibril formation and remodeling.

The article proposes to determine the corrosion effect on fuel metals under dynamic conditions, when washing the prepared copper plate of a certain size, a significant amount of fuel at a certain speed and temperature of the study. This approach will significantly reduce the duration of the study (up to 100 minutes) and is closer to the real conditions of contact of the fuel with a metal surface, in comparison with the standardized method, which is widely used today. Using the proposed laboratory setup, the study was subjected to fuel (200–360 °C), which was obtained by thermal destruction of secondary polymer raw materials, in particular polypropylene. The obtained results showed that the investigated fuel, despite the temperature, the amount of circulating fuel and its water content, does not have a corrosive effect on the copper plate, which can be explained by the absence of corrosive substances in the fuel: water-soluble mineral acids and alkalis, active sulfur compounds and organic acids. However, it should be kept in mind that in polyolefin raw materials, in the form of contamination, there may be products made of other materials, such as rubber and polyvinyl chloride. This can happen when the sorting technology is violated or during the preliminary preparation of raw materials and, in turn, will contribute to the increase in sulfur-containing and chlorine-containing compounds in the fuel, which are characterized by high corrosion activity and should be necessarily removed from the fuel. Note that the fuel obtained from secondary polymer raw materials, in the absence of sulfur-containing and chlorine-containing compounds, is quite promising for the creation on its basis of modern synthetic fuels, analogues of classic petroleum products., В статті запропоновано визначати корозійний вплив на метали палива у динамічних умовах тобто, при омиванні підготовленої мідної пластинки певного розміру, значним об’ємом досліджуваного палива при певних швидкостях і температурі дослідження. Такий підхід дозволить значно скоротити тривалість проведення дослідження (до 100 хв.) та є більш наближеним до реальних умов застосування палива, у порівнянні, зі стандартизованим методом, який сьогодні широко застосовується. Використовуючи запропоновану лабораторну установку, дослідженню підвергалося паливо (200–360 °С), яке було отримане при термічній деструкції вторинної полімерної сировини, зокрема поліпропіленової. Отримані результати показали, що досліджуване паливо, незважаючи на температуру, кількість циркулюючого палива та вміст у ньому води не оказує корозійного впливу на мідну пластинку, що можна пояснити відсутністю корозійно-активних речовин у складі палива: водорозчинних мінеральних кислот та лугів, активних сірчаних сполук та органічних кислот. Але слід враховувати, що у поліолефіновій сировині, у вигляді забруднення, можуть бути присутні вироби з інших матеріалів, наприклад, гуми та полівінілхлориду. Це може статися при порушенні технології сортування або при попередній підготовки сировини і, у свою чергу, сприятиме збільшенню у паливі сірковмісних та хлорвмісних сполук, які характеризуються високою корозійною активністю і підлягають обов’язковому видаленню зі складу палива. Зауважмо, що паливо, отримане з вторинної полімерної сировини, за умов відсутності сірковмісних та хлорвмісних сполук, є досить перспективним для створення на його базі сучасних синтетичних палив, аналогів класичних нафтопродуктів.

Appearance of high-oily sunflower seeds with oil content 52–54% in the 60’s of the last century, led to revolutionary changes in raw material base of the fat-and-oil industry, but caused difficulties in the process of its storage and processing due to the morphological structure features and biochemical composition of fruit coat. Overcoming of the main technological disadvantages for high-oily sunflower seeds during dehulling was achieved due to development of an innovative dehulling technology for seeds in frozen state to sub-zero temperatures, which was developed at the technology of fats and fermentation products department of NTU “KhPI”. This paper presents results of experimental study of sunflower variety Ukrainian F1 high-oily seeds dehulling (dehulling coefficient and kernel content coefficient) depending on the temperature change (0–-196°C) and centrifugal dehullerꞌs rotor rotation speed. It has been shown that rational dehulling conditions for dry seeds, which allow to reach maximum dehulling depth (K0=0,99) under conditions of minimum outputs of chaff and oilseed dust, are cooling temperature in the range of -30–-50°C and dehullerꞌs rotation speed 26,7s-1. Based on the literature data and research results, it has been shown that one of the main reasons of dry seeds dehulling coefficient increasing, during the transition from plus to minus temperatures, is a change in basic physicochemical properties of cellulose fibers (the basis of fruit coats biochemical composition) with a solid adsorption surface towards increasing of its strength. According to a special experiment data in relation to change in aggregate state of sunflower oil in temperature range from +20ºС to -196ºС, it was shown that cellulose fibers with adsorbed oil are practically the only component of fruit coat, which increases its plasticity with decreasing temperature. It is noted that fruit coat plasticity increases most significantly in temperature range -30–-50°C, when oil obtain a plasticine-like consistency. This is exactly what temperature range where minimum yield of chaff and oilseed dust is observed, i.e. the highest dehulling quality is achieved. Obtained scientific results of this study make a significant contribution to the theory and practice of oil seeds dehulling, which have structural and compositional features of the fruit coat., Поява у 60-ті роки минулого століття високоолійного насіння соняшнику з олійністю 52–54 % призвело до революційних змін у сировинній базі олійножирової промисловості, але спричинило труднощі під час його зберігання та переробки завдяки морфологічним особливостям будови та біохімічного складу плодової оболонки. Подолання основних технологічних недоліків високоолійного насіння соняшнику під час обрушування досягнуто завдяки запровадженню інноваційної технології обрушування насіння в охолоджуваному стані до мінусових температур, яку розроблено на кафедрі технології жирів та продуктів бродіння НТУ«ХПІ». В статті наведено результати експериментального дослідження обрушування високоолійного насіння соняшнику сорту Український F1 (коефіцієнт обрушування та коефіцієнт збереження ядра) в залежності від зміни температури (0–-196ºС) та швидкості обертання ротору відцентрової насіннєрушки. Показано, що раціональними умовами обрушування сухого насіння, які дозволяють досягнути граничну глибину обрушування (К0 =0,99) за умови мінімальних виходів січки та олійного пилу, є температура охолодження в інтервалі -30–-50 ºС та швидкість обертання насіннєрушки 26,7 с-1. На підставі літературних даних та результатів досліджень проведено детальний теоретичний аналіз щодо причин зміни фізико – механічних властивостей (міцності, пластичності) плодової оболонки насіння соняшнику в умовах дії мінусових температур та відцентрової сили.

Significance: Gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) enables noninvasive gas sensing in the body. It is developing as a tool for diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory conditions in neonates. Phantom models with relevant features to the clinical translation of GASMAS technology are necessary to understand technical challenges and potential applications of this technique. State-of-the-art phantoms designed for this purpose have focused on the optical properties and anthropomorphic geometry of the thorax, contributing to the source–detector placement, design, and optimization. Lung phantom mimicking the alveolar anatomy has not been included in the existent models due to the inherent complexity of the tissue. We present a simplified model that recreates inflated alveoli embedded in lung phantom. Aim: The goal of this study was to build a lung model with air-filled structures mimicking inflated alveoli surrounded by optical phantom with accurate optical properties (μa = 0.50 cm − 1 and μs′=5.4 cm−1) and physiological parameters [37°C and 100% relative humidity (RH)], and to control the air volume within the phantom to demonstrate the feasibility of GASMAS in sensing changes in pulmonary air volume. Approach: The lung model was built using a capillary structure with analogous size to alveolar units. Part of the capillaries were filled with liquid lung optical phantom to recreate scattering and absorption, whereas empty capillaries mimicked air filled alveoli. The capillary array was placed inside a custom-made chamber that maintained pulmonary temperature and RH. The geometry of the chamber permitted the placement of the laser head and detector of a GASMAS bench top system (MicroLab Dual O2 / H2O), to test the changes in volume of the lung model in transmittance geometry. Results: The lung tissue model with air volume range from 6.89 × 10 − 7 m3 to 1.80 × 10 − 3 m3 was built. Two measurement sets, with 10 different capillary configurations each, were arranged to increase or decrease progressively (in steps of 3.93 × 10 − 8 m3) the air volume in the lung model. The respective GASMAS data acquisition was performed for both data sets. The maximum absorption signal was obtained for configurations with the highest number of air-filled capillaries and decreased progressively when the air spaces were replaced by capillaries filled with liquid optical phantom. Further studies are necessary to define the minimum and maximum volume of air that can be measured with GASMAS-based devices for different source–detector geometries. Conclusions: The optical properties and the structure of tissue from the respiratory zone have been modeled using a simplified capillary array immersed in a controlled environment chamber at pulmonary temperature and RH. The feasibility of measuring volume changes with GASMAS technique has been proven, stating a new possible application of GASMAS technology in respiratory treatment and diagnostics.

This work reports a modification of a fibrous cellulose material (paper) by the addition of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres doped with 10,12–pentacosadiynoic acid (PDA). The fibres are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. When the paper containing PAN–PDA is irradiated with UV light it changes colour to blue as a consequence of interaction of the light with PDA. The colour intensity is related to the absorbed dose, content of PAN–PDA fibres in the paper and the wavelength of UV radiation. The features of the paper are summarised after reflectance spectrophotometry and scanning microscopy analyses. All the properties of the modified paper were tested in accordance with adequate ISO standards. Moreover, a unique method for assessing the unevenness of the paper surface and the quality of printing was proposed by using a Python script (RGBreader) for the analysis of RGB colour channels. The modification applied to the paper can serve as a paper security system. The modified paper can act also as a UV radiation indicator.

Currently, there is an increasing interest in the use of biopolymers in industrial applications to replace petroleum-based additives, since they are abundantly available, renewable and sustainable. Cottonseed protein is a biopolymer that, when used as a modifier, has shown improved performance for wood adhesives and paper products. Thus, it would be useful to explore the feasibility of using cellulose nanomaterials to further improve the performance of cottonseed protein as a paper strength agent. This research characterized the performance of cottonseed protein isolate with/without cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to increase the dry strength of filter paper. An application of 10% protein solution with CNCs (10:1) or CNFs (50:1) improved the elongation at break, tensile strength and modulus of treated paper products compared to the improved performance of cottonseed protein alone. Further analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the cottonseed protein/nanocellulose composites interacted with the filter paper fibers, imparting an increased dry strength.

SIGNIFICANCE The polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), has been increasingly used to make tissue simulating phantoms due to its excellent processability, durability, flexibility, and limited tunability of optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. We report on a robust technique to fabricate PDMS-based tissue-mimicking phantoms where the broad range of scattering and absorption properties are independently adjustable in the visible- to near-infrared wavelength range from 500 to 850 nm. We also report on an analysis method to concisely quantify the phantoms' broadband characteristics with four parameters. AIM We report on techniques to manufacture and characterize solid tissue-mimicking phantoms of PDMS polymers. Tunability of the absorption (μa ( λ ) ) and reduced scattering coefficient spectra (μs'(λ)) in the wavelength range of 500 to 850 nm is demonstrated by adjusting the concentrations of light absorbing carbon black powder (CBP) and light scattering titanium dioxide powder (TDP) added into the PDMS base material. APPROACH The μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) of the phantoms were obtained through measurements with a broadband integrating sphere system and by applying an inverse adding doubling algorithm. Analyses of μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) of the phantoms, by fitting them to linear and power law functions, respectively, demonstrate that independent control of μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) is possible by systematically varying the concentrations of CBP and TDP. RESULTS Our technique quantifies the phantoms with four simple fitting parameters enabling a concise tabulation of their broadband optical properties as well as comparisons to the optical properties of biological tissues. We demonstrate that, to a limited extent, the scattering properties of our phantoms mimic those of human tissues of various types. A possible way to overcome this limitation is demonstrated with phantoms that incorporate polystyrene microbead scatterers. CONCLUSIONS Our manufacturing and analysis techniques may further promote the application of PDMS-based tissue-mimicking phantoms and may enable robust quality control and quality checks of the phantoms.
