In this study we demonstrate a simple and compact implementation of the fractional-order differentiator. At the heart of the proposed approach lies the “universal power law” of the capacitance dispersion of the interface between nanoporous TiN micro-electrode and NaCl 0.9% solution. Using of this phenomenon we take experimentally 0.68- and 0.77-order derivatives of various functions.

AbstractHere we demonstrate a simple label-free bio-electronic radiation (ultra-violet) hazard detector based on non-destructive electrical impedance spectroscopy technique with a single living cell as a sensing element. Radiation results in wrong cell’s functioning and, as corollary, cell’s membrane distortion. The latter results in impedance shift for the electrode covered by the cell. The additional sensitivity of impedance shift is achieved by the simultaneous usage of the TiN porous electrodes and adaptive filtering for impedance data processing. The main advantage of the proposed sensor with respect to purely physical and/or chemical sensors is high selectivity: it a priory reacts only on the dangerous for living beings radiation.

We have built an automated system to analyze x‐ray radiographs of laser fusion targets which greatly facilitates the detection of coating thickness variations. Many laser fusion targets require opaque coatings 1 to 20 μm thick which have been deposited on small glass balloons 100 to 500 μm in diameter. These coatings must be uniformly thick to 1% for the targets to perform optimally. Our system is designed to detect variations as small as 100 A in 1‐μm‐thick coatings by converting the optical density variations of contact x‐ray radiographs into coating thickness variations. Radiographic images are recorded in HRP emulsions and magnified by an optical microscope, imaged onto television camera, digitized and processed on a Data General S/230 computer with a code by Whitman. After an initial set‐up by the operator, as many as 200 targets will be automatically characterized.
