The directional light emission from a single subwavelength slit surrounded by periodic grooves in layered films consisting of Ag and transparent dielectric is analysed numerically by the finite difference time domain method. The results show that the transmission through this structure is strongly confined by the modulation of the dielectric film with grooves on the output side. The role of evanescent waves in this phenomenon is discussed. It is the re-diffraction of the evanescent waves (that are generated by the diffraction of the subwavelength slit) caused by the grooves on the dielectric film that leads to the directional transmission. Some suggestions are given to obtain beaming light with high transmittance.

The contribution of multiphoton absorption to open-aperture Z-scan measurements is analysed by coordinate transformation. The approximate closed-form solution is obtained, which is suitable for application in higher-optical power regime. As an example, the coupling between linear absorption and two-photon absorption is discussed in detail.

Optical nonlinearities of new organophosphorus fullerene derivative were determined by the Z-scan method with a pulsed Q-switch Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. The experimental results demonstrated that the derivative has much larger excited-states nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction than C60. A five-level model was utilized to fit the experimental data, and a good agreement is reached. Some parameters such as excited-state absorption cross and refraction cross were obtained. To our knowledge, the excited-state cross section of new organophosphorus fullerene derivative and its effective ratio to the ground-state cross section are the largest values among the fullerene derivatives reported to date.

The origin of Rayleigh scattering in fiber waveguides is numerically demonstrated, which indicates that the inhomogeneous doping and diameter variations during drawing are the two dominant reasons. And the scattering fiber with a loss as high as 0.54 dB/km is successfully fabricated based on such principles. The overall Rayleigh backscattering intensity of 5 km scattering fiber is 5 dB higher than that of SMF-28 with the same length in telecommunication window. The principle of single-mode random fiber laser is also studied. The emission spectrum is the superposition of a large number of random modes with arbitrary amplitudes and phases, among which only the highest gain modes can lasing through gain competition. In experiment, a single-mode erbium-doped fiber linear laser with a narrow linewidth of 3.5 kHz and a high contrast of 50 dB is achieved by combining with 500 m scattering fiber as the random feedback. The threshold pump current is reduced by 80 mA and the max output power is increased by 3 dBm for the proposed laser compared with those of the laser with 500 m SMF-28 as the feedback. The tunabiltiy of the proposed laser is determined mainly by the fiber Bragg grating.

Using Gaussian decomposition (GD) method, we studied the theory of Z-scan with large nonlinear phase shift induced by a pulsed laser. It has been verified that the GD method is still valid to deal with analysis of Z-scan measurements with large nonlinear phase shift. By comparing the peak-valley configuration of the Z-scan curves for large nonlinear phase shift induced by pulsed and CW laser, we found that some new peak-valley features of the Z-scan curves appear as the aperture size or light intensity increases in the case of large nonlinear phase shift. Meanwhile, we carried out the Z-scan experiments of pure CS2 to confirm the results of numerical simulation in the case of large nonlinear phase shift induced by a picosecond pulsed laser. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical. Our results have some significance to the measurement of Z-scan with large nonlinear phase shift induced by a pulsed laser.

We report out experimental results on Z-scan characteristics of co-existence of Kerr effects and transient thermo-optical effects in Kerr media in the nanosecond regime.The transition of peak-valley pattern under a certain condition was observed.There is a basic agreement between experimental data and numerical modeling.Meanwhile, a new single peak pattern or platform pattern of Z-scan curves was observed while the transient thermally induced optical nonlinearity counterbalances with Kerr effects.The research is significant to analyze correctly Z-scan measurements using a nanosecond pulse laser.
