Nickel-based alloys are extensively used in a wide range of extreme environments because of their exceptional mechanical properties. The excellent strength of these alloys is derived from the addition of long-range ordered precipitates, introduced by thermal aging. The interactions between the dislocations and LRO precipitates dictate the deformation modes and plastic response in these alloys. While the majority of studies have focused on L12-structured precipitate-strengthened Ni-based alloys, less work has considered the Ni-based alloys containing Pt2Mo-structured, Ni2(Cr,Mo)-typed precipitates. In these alloys, Pt2Mo-structured precipitates enable room-temperature deformation twinning in addition to slip, which increases strain hardenability measured from bulk mechanical testing. Although previous geometric-based model suggested that deformation twinning is favored over slip, the factors that influence the activation between twinning versus slip have not been thoroughly explored in this class of Ni-based alloys. In this work, molecular dynamics examined the possible types of dislocation and Pt2Mo-structured precipitate interactions at low temperature. Combined with in situ micromechanical testing, the role of resolved shear stresses on dislocation partials were shown to directly influence the activation of slip versus twinning. Additionally, using an energy-based approach, molecular dynamics results demonstrated a novel twin formation process, caused by the dislocation interaction with the Pt2Mo-structured precipitates.

Compression tests at low strains were performed to theoretically analyze the effects of anisotropic elasticity, misorientation, grain boundary (GB) stiffness, interfacial dislocations, free surfaces, and critical force on dislocation pile-ups in micro-sized Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) Nickel (Ni) and &alpha, Brass bi-crystals. The spatial variations of slip heights due to localized slip bands terminating at GB were measured by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to determine the Burgers vector distributions in the dislocation pile-ups. These distributions were then simulated by discrete pile-up micromechanical calculations in anisotropic bi-crystals consistent with the experimentally measured material parameters. The computations were based on the image decomposition method considering the effects of interphase GB and free surfaces in multilayered materials. For Ni and &alpha, Brass, it was found that the best predicted step height spatial profiles were obtained considering anisotropic elasticity, free surface effects, a homogeneous external stress and a certain critical force in the material to equilibrate the dislocation pile-ups.

International audience; For the last decades, new reparation or fabrication processes have been studied to replace traditional rebar by roving of different mineral or organic fibres to avoid corrosion issues. Such materials refer to the family of cementitious composite. Their tensile strength would directly depend on the proportion of reinforcement but also strongly on the interfacial mechanical properties between fibres and cementitious matrix. From now, evaluation of interfacial properties was mostly limited to the use of force-displacement curves obtained from mechanical experiments. This work presents a new methodology using micromechanical tension stiffening tests combined with X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) observations, performed at the Anatomix beamline at Synchrotron Soleil, and specific image processing procedures. Multi XRCT acquisitions with suitable scanning strategy are used to image the whole fibre-matrix interface along centimetric samples at four to five different levels of loading magnitude. Intensive image processing is then performed on tomographic images including digital volume correlation (DVC), image subtraction and Hessian-based filtering. This experiment allows to study damage mechanisms at small scale. The proposed methodology shows great potential to provide both qualitative and quantitative elements on interfacial mechanical behaviour such as crack growth and crack orientation. The interface between mortar and sufficiently small multi-fibre yarn used in this paper is shown to behave in certain condition as traditional rebar interface producing conical cracks in the surrounding matrix rather than debonding in mode 2, permitting a much higher energy dissipation during debonding. According to this study, conical cracks repartition and geometry are mostly influenced by the cementitious matrix. The spacing between cracks goes from 50 to 100 μm and the angle between crack normal vector and yarn orientation goes from 35 to 50 degrees.

Summary A site‐specific xenon plasma focused ion beam preparation technique for microcantilever samples (1–20 µm width and 1:10 aspect ratio) is presented. The novelty of the methodology is the use of a chunk lift‐out onto a clean silicon wafer to facilitate easy access of a low‐cost probe type indenter which provides bending force measurement. The lift‐out method allows sufficient room for the indenter and a line of sight for the electron beam to enable displacement measurement. An electroplated nanotwinned copper (NTC) was cut to a 3 × 3 × 25 µm microbeam and in situ mechanically tested using the developed technique. It demonstrated measured values of Youngs modulus of 78.7 ± 11 GPa and flow stress of 0.80 ± 0.05 GPa, which is within the ranges reported in the literature. Lay Description In this paper a site specific method is present for making particularly small mechanical tests samples, of the order of 100th the size of a human hair. These small samples can then be used to determine the mechanical properties of the bulk material. Copper with a nano twinned grain structure is used as a test medium. Ion milling was used to cut the sample to shape and a micro probe was used for mechanical testing. Ion milling can cut away very small volumes of material as it accelerates ions at the surface of the sample, atomically machining the sample. Micro probes are a cost‐effective small‐scale load measurement devices, however, they require a large area for accessing the sample. The indenter requirements are a problem when making you samples with ion milling as ion millers are best at making small cuts. Our aim was to design a cutting strategy which reduces the amount of cutting required while allowing samples to be fabricated anywhere on the sample. We used a chunk lift out technique to remove a piece of material which is then welded to a wafer of silicon this gives sufficient space around the sample for ion milling and testing. The additional space allowed easy access for the probe. A 3 × 3 × 10 µm micro cantilever beam was cut out from copper, this beam was then bent. The force from bending and distance bent was measured and converted into Youngs modulus which is a measure of flexibility. The modulus value measured was comparable to the values reported in other papers.

International audience; Extrusion-based additive manufacturing of cementitious material is a promising technology for the future of construction. Nevertheless, new solutions need to be proposed to provide either ductility or even reinforcement in areas in tension. Using fibres to reinforce the structure made by extrusion seems to be promising and needs to be fully understood at different scales. Moreover, the efficiency of reinforcement depends mainly on the interfacial properties between matrix and fibres. Decohesion between matrix and fibre is studied at two different scales. A mesoscopic analytical mechanical model of a so-called tension stiffening test has been proposed to quantify resistance and friction along the interface from the force-elongation curve. Secondly, the same experimental test is performed inside the microtomography setup of the Anatomix beamline of Synchrotron Soleil permitting to identify the microscopic nature, shape and the evolution of decohesion between matrix and fibres for different loading. Different types of fibres are compared and different damaging mechanisms are observed.

This paper reveals potential micro mechanisms underlying time-dependent anelasticity observed in Al-(1 wt%)Cu thin films. The analyzed deformation mechanisms involve dislocation motion and interaction with solute diffusion, grain boundaries and precipitates. In order to investigate the role of these mechanisms, Al-(1 wt%)Cu alloy thin films are heat treated to systematically change the precipitation state, while characterizing the grain boundary distribution with electron backscatter diffraction. Micromechanical characterization is performed by microbeam bending, nano-tensile creep testing and nano-indentation. Results in microbeam bending reveal, for all precipitate and grain boundary states considered, a similar time-dependent evolution of the anelastic strain after load release. The magnitude of the recovered strain is also observed to be independent of the precipitate or grain boundary configuration. The nano-tensile creep test also indicates the same time-dependent anelastic evolution, indicating that the loading state does not affect the underlying mechanisms. Analysis of strain bursts in nano-indentation shows that pinning of dislocations by Cu solutes is unaffected by the precipitation state. Based on uniaxial creep and time-dependent anelasticity measurements in pure Al specimens, it is made plausible that the time-dependent anelasticity originates from diffusion-limited glide or climb of dislocation segments that are pinned at Cu solutes or in dislocation structures, which provide an internal driving force.

The influence of the chemical nature of the metallic binder on the plastic deformation of cemented carbides was studied. Three different cemented carbide grades - WC-Co, WC-CoNi and WC-NiMo - with similar microstructural characteristics (binder content and carbide grain size) were investigated. Mechanical response was evaluated by means of uniaxial compression of micropillars, and tests were carried out in-situ in a FESEM with a nanoindenter equipped with a flat-diamond punch. After uniaxial compression, inspection of deformation phenomena was done at both surface and bulk of micropillars through scanning and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. It is found that yielding phenomena and strain hardening increase as Co is totally substituted by a NiMo alloy, while contrary effect results from partial replacement of Co with Ni. Relative differences are directly linked to intrinsic ductility of the metallic phase and operative plastic deformation mechanisms. Moreover, for the three materials studied, stress-strain responses show pronounced yielding events related to glide at WC/WC interfaces. Although they are discerned at different stress levels, estimated values of sliding resistance of WC/WC boundaries are found to be alike for the three grades studied.

SiC-bonded diamond materials produced by pressureless reactive infiltration of diamond preforms with silicon show high hardness and wear resistance. These properties are due to the relatively high diamond volume content of approximately 50 vol% and the mechanically strong interface between diamond and SiC. To determine the bending strength of individual interfaces between diamond and SiC, micro-cantilevers were prepared by focused ion beam milling at 13 grain boundaries and in-situ bending tests were carried out in a scanning electron microscope. The determined strength of cantilevers showing interface fracture was 10.4 ± 4.0 GPa. Fracture surfaces were analyzed to verify the fracture behavior and initiation. In addition to fracture at the interface diamond/SiC, fracture occurred inside the SiC grains and at the SiC/silicon interface at comparable strength values. The results prove the high diamond/SiC-interface bonding strength.
