Graphene has been found to be an excellent heat-conductor due to the high speed of acoustic phonons in its lattice. In this work, we examine in depth a commercial graphene-based waist protector which uses graphene as a heating element. By employing thermal imaging in tandem with Raman microscopy, the thermal characteristics and performance of this device is fully assessed. It will be shown that no pronounced variation in its function is observed up to 3 hours of continuous operation and that the device seems to work effectively as an IR emitter at low power consumption. Temperature fluctuations, associated with a decrease of its electrical resistance are observed after 12 hours uptime and a temperature difference of 15 °C was recorded after 5 days of uninterrupted operation. These effects are thought to be due to the loss of graphene/polymer adhesion resulting from thermal fatigue. Overall, it is demonstrated that graphene can indeed be incorporated as an effective and operational thermal heating system in similar biomedical devices.

In this work glucose (G), α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) are used as dispersing agents for graphene oxide (GO), exploring the influence of both saccharide units and geometric/steric hindrance on the rheological, thermal, wettability and electrochemical properties of a GO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) nanocomposite. By acting on the saccharide-based additives, we can modulate the rheological, thermal, and wettability properties of the GO/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite. Firstly, the influence of all the additives on the rheological behaviour of GO and PEDOT:PSS was investigated separately in order to understand the effect of the dispersing agent on both the components of the ternary nanocomposite, individually. Subsequently, steady shear and dynamic frequency tests were conducted on all the nanocomposite solutions, characterized by thermal, wettability and morphological analysis. Finally, the electrochemical properties of the GO/ PEDOT composites with different dispersing agents for supercapacitors were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV results revealed that GO/PEDOT with glucose exhibited the highest specific capacitance among the systems investigated.

A simple, fast and general protocol for quantitative analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data provides accurate estimations of chemical species in graphene and related materials (GRMs). XPS data are commonly used to estimate the quality of and defects in graphene and graphene oxide (GO), by comparing carbon and oxygen 1s XPS peaks, obtaining an O/C ratio. This approach, however, cannot be used in the presence of extraneous oxygen contamination. The protocol, based on quantitative line-shape analysis of C 1s signals, uses asymmetric pseudo-Voigt line-shapes (APV), in contrast to Gaussian-based approaches conventionally used in fitting XPS spectra, thus allowing better accuracy in quantifying C 1s contributions from graphitic carbon (sp2), defects (sp3 carbon), carbons bonded to hydroxyl and epoxy groups, and from carbonyl and carboxyl groups. The APV protocol was evaluated on GRMs with O/C ratios ranging from 0.02 to 0.30 with film thicknesses from monolayers to bulk-like (>30 nm) layers and also applied to previously published data, showing better results compared to those from conventional XPS fitting protocols. Based uniquely on C 1s data, the APV protocol can quantify O/C ratio and the presence of specific functional groups in GRMs even on SiOx, substrates, or in samples containing water.

Polymeric nanocomposites based on UV in situ reduced graphene oxide were developed in order to enhance the electrical conductivity of polymeric matrices for the realization of highly efficient solid-state hybrid solar cells based on organometal trihalide perovskite absorbers. Graphene is a 2-D single layer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms characterized by high specific surface area, Young's modulus, thermal stability, mobility of charge carriers and plus fascinating transport phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect. Among several developed methods to prepare graphene, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and mechanical exfoliation, the chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is regarded as the most promising for future implementation in large-scale production. In this work, a GO prepared by a modified Hummers method was used and reduced by a green method based on UV treatment in inert atmosphere. Graphene oxide reduction was monitored evaluating the change of absorption peak by UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), monitoring the decrease of the oxygen groups linked to carbon. Dilute nanocomposites suspensions were then prepared by optimizing the dispersion procedure of GO in the polymeric matrix as function of process parameters, i.e. time, temperature and composition. Nanocomposite films were also realized by spin coating on different substrates and characterized by several techniques. At last the film showing the better properties was implemented in a hybrid solar cell to evaluate the increase of electrical conductivity and power conversion efficiency.

Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged at the forefront of solution-processable photovoltaic devices. Being the perovskite precursor mixture a complex equilibrium of species, it is very difficult to predict/control their interactions with different substrates, thus the final film properties and device performances. Here the wettability of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) onto poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transporting layer is improved by exploiting the cooperative effect of graphene oxide (GO) and glucose inclusion. The glucose, in addition, triggers the reduction of GO, enhancing the conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS+GO+glucose based nanocomposite. The relevance of this approach toward photovoltaic applications is demonstrated by fabricating a hysteresis-free MAPbI(3) solar cells displaying a approximate to 37% improvement in power conversion efficiency if compared to a device grown onto pristine PEDOT:PSS. Most importantly, V-OC reaches values over 1.05 V that are among the highest ever reported for PEDOT:PSS p-i-n device architecture, suggesting minimal recombination losses, high hole-selectivity, and reduced trap density at the PEDOT:PSS along with optimized MAPbI(3) coverage.

Inthis paper, we have investigated the possibility to realize a nanocomposite buffer layer for perovskite solar cells, based on polyelectrolyte poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) PEDOT:PSS and graphene oxide (GO). To this aim, GO, prepared by a modified Hummers method, was mixed with PEDOT: PSS by solvent swelling method and reduced in situ into the polymer matrix through a green and simple method, by using UV radiation. Thin nanocomposite layers were spin coated on different substrates and characterized by several techniques. GO reduction was first analyzed by XPS analyses, monitoring the decrease of the intensity of the peak of the oxygen groups linked to carbon. The grade of the dispersion of GO into PEDOT: PSS was also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Sheet resistance measurements of the films with and without GO before and after UV treatment was performed. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites was then evaluated by thermogravimetric analyses. The nanocomposite layer was finally employed in a perovskite solar cell to evaluate the effect of GO reduction on power conversion efficiency. The interface interaction between the nanocomposite and the perovskite precursors was analyzed by contact angle measurements.

This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries.
