The pure Ca9Co12O28 thermoelectric (TE) material powder is synthesized by solid state sintering method. The powder is pressed into compact tablets under pressure of 200 MPa, 2.0 GPa, 2.5 GPa, 3.0 GPa, 3.5 GPa and 4.0 GPa, respectively. The electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity and hardness are tested. The properties of specimens under different high pressures are compared and analyzed. It is found that the relative density of the specimens under different high pressures can reach 95% approximately. The highest power factor of the specimens is 2.171μW/(cm·K2) at 3.5 GPa, which is 2.4 times that at 200 MPa. At the same time, the maximum Vickers hardness of the specimens under 3.5 GPa is 127.7 MPa, while that under 200 MPa is only 16.8 MPa, indicating that the hardness under 3.5Gpa is increased by about 6.6 times. More importantly, it is found that the thermal conductivity of the specimens decreases with pressure in the range of 2.5Gpa–4.0Gpa, which proves that high pressure can refine the heat transfer performance effectively. This study lays the foundation for the synthesis of new-type Ca9Co12O28 TE materials with high machinability, high power factor, low thermal conductivity and high TE figure of merit with high-pressure technology.

The paper composite sandwich structure with corrugation and honeycomb cores has been widely used in civil and national defense industries, and the cushioning energy absorption characteristic is a key indicator to evaluate the performance of this composite structure. Therefore, this paper is focused on the influences of honeycomb thickness on the shock acceleration response and deformation characteristics to analyze cushioning energy absorption performance of the composite structure by various experimental tests. The experimental result shows that the paper corrugation layer firstly comes into crushed, and then the paper honeycomb layer is crushed. Additionally, the large honeycomb thickness may cause the secondary collapse of paper honeycomb layer. Under the same impact energy or impact mass, the cushioning energy absorption of the single-sided composite sandwich structure is better than that of the double-sided structure with the same honeycomb thickness. However, the impact resistance of the double-sided composite structure is better than that of the single-sided structure. For the paper composite sandwich structures with the honeycomb thicknesses 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm, the increase of honeycomb thickness would decrease the cushioning energy absorption of the whole structure under the drop impact with low energy. However, under the drop impact with high energy, the influence of honeycomb thickness on cushioning energy absorption is contrary. For the paper composite sandwich structure, the specific energy absorption, unit volume energy absorption, and stroke efficiency for the honeycomb thicknesses 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm are higher than those for the honeycomb thickness 70 mm. Therefore, the low honeycomb thickness is more advantageous for the cushioning energy absorption of paper composite sandwich structure.

This study introduces the opinion of the corrugation hierarchy to develop the second-order corrugation paperboard, and explore the deformation characteristics, yield strength, and energy absorbing capacity under out-of-plane static evenly compression loading by experimental and analytical approaches. On the basis of the inclined-straight strut elements of corrugation unit and plastic hinge lines, the yield and crushing strengths of corrugation unit were analyzed. This study shows that as the compressive stress increases, the second-order corrugation core layer is firstly crushed, and the first-order corrugation structures gradually compacted until the failure of entire structure. The corrugation type has an obvious influence on the yield strength of the corrugation sandwich panel, and the yield strength of B-flute corrugation sandwich panel is wholly higher than that of the C-flute structure. At the same compression rate, the flute type has a significant impact on energy absorption, and the C-flute second-order corrugation sandwich panel has better bearing capacity than the B-flute structure. The second-order corrugation sandwich panel has a better bearing capacity than the first-order structure. The static compression rate has little effect on the yield strength and deformation mode. However, with the increase of the static compression rate, the corrugation sandwich panel has a better cushioning energy absorption and material utilization rate.

The ternary van der Waals material Nb2Six-1Te4 demonstrates many interesting properties as the content of Si is changed, ranging from metallic Nb3SiTe6 (x = 5/3) to narrow-gap semiconductor Nb2SiTe4 (x = 2) and with the emergence of one-dimensional Dirac fermion excitations in between. An in-depth understanding of their properties with different stoichiometry is important. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to reveal that Nb2Six-1Te4 is a system with spontaneously developed and self-aligned one-dimensional metallic chains embedded in a two-dimensional semiconductor. Electron quasiparticles form one- and two-dimensional standing waves side by side. This special microscopic structure results in strong transport anisotropy. Along the chain direction the material behaves like a metal, while perpendicular to the chain direction, it behaves like a semiconductor. These findings provide an important basis for further investigation of this intriguing system.

The paper corrugation tube is an innovative kind of energy absorbing structure and shock absorber which can play an important role on the cushioning energy absorption for airdrop equipments and transportation packaging. The deformation characteristics and failure modes of the regular triangle, quadrangle, pentagon and hexagon paper corrugation tubes were comparatively studied by a series of axial static compression experiments, the cushioning energy absorption was evaluated by the seven characteristic parameters (e.g. initial peak force, mean crush force, total energy absorption, specific energy absorption, crush force efficiency, unit area energy absorption and stroke efficiency), and the influences of tube direction, cross-sectional shape, tube length and compression rate on failure modes and cushioning energy absorption were analyzed and compared. These researches showed that the tubes along X direction only have the accordion deformation mode, yet the tubes along Y direction have four deformation modes including steady state progressive buckling, Euler buckling, angular tear and transverse shear. For the paper corrugation tubes along Y direction, the cross-sectional shape has obvious influence on the cushioning energy absorption of structures, and the specific energy absorption and unit area energy absorption of regular triangle and pentagon tubes are better than those of the tubes with regular quadrilateral and hexagonal cross-section at compression rates of 12 and 48mm/min. The tube length of 150 mm or compression rate of 72 mm/min would cause the increase of contribution proportion of non-ideal deformation mode and the decrease of cushioning properties. The paper corrugation tubes along X direction have more stable and controllable deformation mode, yet the paper corrugation tubes along Y direction have better cushioning energy absorption.

Thermoelectric materials (TMs) can uniquely convert waste heat into electricity, which provides a potential solution for the global energy crisis that is increasingly severe. Bulk Cu2Se, with ionic conductivity of Cu ions, exhibits a significant enhancement of its thermoelectric figure of merit zT by a factor of ~3 near its structural transition around 400 K. Here, we show a systematic study of the electronic structure of Cu2Se and its temperature evolution using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon heating across the structural transition, the electronic states near the corner of the Brillouin zone gradually disappear, while the bands near the centre of Brillouin zone shift abruptly towards high binding energies and develop an energy gap. Interestingly, the observed band reconstruction well reproduces the temperature evolution of the Seebeck coefficient of Cu2Se, providing an electronic origin for the drastic enhancement of the thermoelectric performance near 400 K. The current results not only bridge among structural phase transition, electronic structures, and thermoelectric properties in a condensed matter system, but also provide valuable insights into the search and design of new generation of thermoelectric materials., Comment: To appear in Science Bulletin

Quantum well states (QWSs) can form at the surface or interfaces of materials with confinement potential. They have broad applications in electronic and optical devices such as high mobility electron transistor, photodetector and quantum well laser. The properties of the QWSs are usually the key factors for the performance of the devices. However, direct visualization and manipulation of such states are in general challenging. In this work, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we directly probe the QWSs generated on the vacuum interface of a narrow band gap semiconductor Nb2SiTe4. Interestingly, the position and splitting of QWSs could be easily manipulated via potassium (K) dosage onto the sample surface. Our results suggest Nb2SiTe4 to be an intriguing semiconductor system to study and engineer the QWSs, which has great potential in device applications., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

The paper corrugation tube is an attractive and innovative mode of cushioning protection and energy absorption for the general protection and packaging technology of military and civil products. The aims of this paper focus on the dynamic compression characteristics of four kinds of regular polygonal paper corrugation tubes under the conditions of axial drop impacts, and the influence rules of structural parameters and load parameters on the dynamic cushioning energy absorption. The results show that, the tube direction has a crucial effect on the deformation mode of the paper corrugation tubes, the deformation of X-direction paper corrugation tubes has a stable accordion mode, but that of Y-direction paper corrugation tubes is a mixture of steady progressive buckling and other non-ideal modes. The X-direction paper corrugation tubes have lower peak stress, stable and controllable deformation mode with multiple folds, and higher total energy absorption, unit area energy absorption, specific energy absorption and stroke efficiency than the Y-direction paper corrugation tubes. Moreover, the change of cross-section shape of X-direction paper corrugation tubes has no obvious influence on the total energy absorption, while the total energy absorption of Y-direction paper corrugation tube obviously rises with the increase of the number of cross-section edges of the tubes, but the unit area energy absorption, specific energy absorption and stroke efficiency decrease with the increase of the number of cross-section edges of the tubes. Moreover, the increase of the number of cross-section edges of the tubes made the total energy absorption of Y-direction tubes rise, while the total energy absorption of X-direction tubes has no obvious change. But the unit area energy absorption, specific energy absorption and stroke efficiency decrease with the increase of the number of cross-section edges of the tubes. Furthermore, the tube length, impact block mass and impact energy have also important influence on the cushioning energy absorption of the paper corrugation tubes under axial drop impact.

The electronic structure of the natural topological semimetal Co3Sn2S2crystals was studied by using near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (ResPES). Although, the significant increase of the Co 3d valence band emission is observed at the Co 2p absorption edge in the ResPES experiments, the spectral weight at these photon energies is dominated by the normal Auger contribution. This observation indicates the delocalized character of photoexcited Co 3d electrons and is supported by the first-principle calculations. Our results on the investigations of the element- and orbital-specific electronic states near the Fermi level of Co3Sn2S2are of importance for the comprehensive description of the electronic structure of this material, which is significant for its future applications in different areas of science and technology, including catalysis and water splitting.

The magnetic van der Waals crystals MnBi_{2}Te_{4}/(Bi_{2}Te_{3})_{n} have drawn significant attention due to their rich topological properties and the tunability by external magnetic field. Although the MnBi_{2}Te_{4}/(Bi_{2}Te_{3})_{n} family have been intensively studied in the past few years, their close relatives, the MnSb_{2}Te_{4}/(Sb_{2}Te_{3})_{n} family, remain much less explored. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first principles calculations, we find that MnSb_{4}Te_{7}, the n=1 member of the MnSb_{2}Te_{4}/(Sb_{2}Te_{3})_{n} family, is a magnetic topological system with versatile topological phases that can be manipulated by both carrier doping and magnetic field. Our calculations unveil that its A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state stays in a Z_{2} AFM topological insulator phase, which can be converted to an inversion-symmetry-protected axion insulator phase when in the ferromagnetic (FM) state. Moreover, when this system in the FM phase is slightly carrier doped on either the electron or hole side, it becomes a Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes in the highest valence bands and lowest conduction bands, which are manifested by the measured notable anomalous Hall effect. Our work thus introduces a new magnetic topological material with different topological phases that are highly tunable by carrier doping or magnetic field.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with narrow band gaps (∼0.3 eV) are of great importance for realizing ambipolar transistors and mid-infrared (MIR) detections. However, most of the 2D materials studied to date have band gaps that are too large. A few of the materials with suitable band gaps are not stable under ambient conditions. In this study, the layered Nb2SiTe4 is shown to be a stable 2D material with a band gap of 0.39 eV. Field-effect transistors based on few-layer Nb2SiTe4 show ambipolar transport with a similar magnitude of electron and hole current and a high charge-carrier mobility of ∼100 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperature. Optoelectronic measurements of the devices show clear response to an MIR wavelength of 3.1 μm with a high responsivity of ∼0.66 AW-1. These results establish Nb2SiTe4 as a good candidate for ambipolar devices and MIR detection.

The vibration transmissibility of paper honeycomb sandwich plate was tested and the vibration transmissibility curve was simplified and characterized. Based on the basic principle of vibration mechanics, the equation for calculating the energy dissipated by damping of paper honeycomb sandwich plate-block system during vibration was deduced. Furthermore, the effects of honeycomb structural parameters (cell length, sandwich plate thickness) and block mass on the damping energy dissipation were analyzed. The results showed that the curves of vibration transmissibility for paper honeycomb sandwich plate can be divided into three regions: plateau region, amplification region, and attenuation region. The vibration transmissibility ratio in different regions can be expressed as functions of frequency. The energy dissipated by damping of paper honeycomb sandwich plate-block system depends on its vibration transmissibility. If the vibration transmissibility ratio–frequency curve is obtained, the damping energy dissipation of the system can be calculated. The total energy dissipation of paper honeycomb sandwich plate-block system during vibration is about equal to that of plateau region, and the energy dissipated in amplification and attenuation region can be neglected. Different honeycomb structural parameters have the same effect on the damping energy dissipation of the system. Block mass has little effect on the damping energy dissipation in plateau region and the total energy dissipation during vibration but has a greater impact on the energy dissipation in the amplification and attenuation regions. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic method for calculation of energy dissipated by damping and evaluation of anti-vibration property for packaging material.

In view of cushioning energy absorption of paper composite sandwich structures with sinusoidal corrugation and hexagonal honeycomb cores, the static yield strength and compression deformation were firstly analyzed by experiments, then the unit volume energy absorption, unit area energy absorption, and specific energy absorption were evaluated. Further, the influences of static compression rate, corrugation types, and honeycomb thickness on the cushioning energy absorption were respectively studied. The experimental observations show that the paper composite sandwich structures are crushed layer by layer due to the difference in the yield strength of sandwiches, and the honeycomb core is crushed after the collapsing of corrugation core. The three evaluation indices of cushioning energy absorption have similar change rule with the compression rate, corrugation types, and honeycomb thickness. The influence of static compression rate on the yield strength and cushioning energy absorption of the paper composite sandwich structure is not obvious. The composite sandwich structures consisting of paper corrugation sandwich with large inertia moment and honeycomb sandwich with large thickness have more excellent cushioning energy absorption, the B-corrugation can increase the unit volume energy absorption of paper composite sandwich structures by up to 18% than C-corrugation, and the 3-honeycomb can increase the unit volume energy absorption of paper composite sandwich structures by up to 32% than 2-honeycomb.

The composite layered structures including paper corrugation, paper honeycomb and expandable polyethylene are innovative structures of cushioning energy absorption, and the compression and impact resistances of the expandable polyethylene can be enhanced by laminating the corrugated paperboard or honeycomb paperboard. This article evaluated the compression performance and cushioning energy absorption of the composite layered structures by the static compression and drop impact compression tests. On one hand, the static compression properties showed that the total energy absorption, energy absorption per unit volume and stroke efficiency of the composite layered structures were all higher than those of expandable polyethylene. The specific energy absorption was enhanced with the increase in compression strain but almost not affected by the compression rate. The specific energy absorption of the composite layered structures including the expandable polyethylene and honeycomb paperboard was greater than those of the expandable polyethylene and corrugated paperboard. The energy absorption efficiency of the composite layered structures including the expandable polyethylene and corrugated paperboard was large for the low compression stress level, yet that of the composite layered structures including the expandable polyethylene and honeycomb paperboard was large for the high compression stress level. On the other hand, the dynamic compression characteristics showed that the peak stress, energy absorption per unit area, energy absorption per unit volume and specific energy absorption of the composite layered structures embodying paper sandwich cores and expandable polyethylene had linear increasing trends with the increase of drop shock energy. At the same drop impact condition, the composite layered structures including the honeycomb paperboard and expandable polyethylene had better cushioning energy absorption, the peak stress decreased by 23.6% on average, the energy absorption efficiency raised by 8.85% on average and the specific energy absorption increased by 18.1% on average than those including the corrugated paperboard and expandable polyethylene. Therefore, the corrugated paperboard and honeycomb paperboard can helpfully improve the cushioning energy absorption of the expandable polyethylene, and the composite layered structures embodying the expandable polyethylene, corrugated paperboard and honeycomb paperboard may hold excellent packaging protection.

The finite element model for paper honeycomb was constructed, and the finite element method of out-of-plane compression for the paper honeycomb was studied. Then four kinds of paper honeycomb with different structural parameters were simulated and analyzed using finite element software ABAQUS. Moreover, the results obtained from finite element method were verified based on the existing theoretical research results and experimental results, respectively. The results show that stress–strain curves obtained from finite element method clearly show the four deformation stages of the paper honeycomb under out-of-plane compression, which is basically consistent with the trend of the typical curve. The values of initial peak stress, plateau stress and densification strain are close to the theoretical results. The stress–strain curves and deformation contours coincide with experiments well. The differences of initial peak stress σpk, plateau stress σpl and densification strain εD between theoretical, finite element method and experimental results are less than 15%. Therefore, the finite element method can be used to analyze the stress–strain curves and deformation characteristics of paper honeycomb. In addition, the results also show that the thickness of specimen has little effect on the stress and strain. However, people often prefer to use the thicker paper honeycomb to get better cushioning effect in practical applications, which was explained.

We present extensive investigations of the crystallographic phase diagram and electronic properties of the Fe-based superconductor FeSe under extreme conditions (high pressure (HP) and low temperature (LT)) by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). An isostructural phase transition (Tetragonal (T) →high-pressure Tetragonal (Tʹ)) is discovered in FeSe at ∼2.8 GPa based on the axial ratio c/a with finer pressure step as observed in Fe-As-based superconductor such as EuFe2As2. We also find a pressure-induced Tʹ → MnP-type phase transition at 7.6 GPa in FeSe, which is consistent with the documented pressure-induced high-spin → low-spin transition (∼6–7 GPa). These results reveal the pressure-induced structural phase transition sequence in FeSe at room temperature to be T → Tʹ → Tʹ+MnP-type at pressures of 0–10.6 GPa, enriching the crystallographic phase diagram. The HPLT XRD data also indicate that a sluggish structural phase transition (Cmma → Pnma) begins at 7.5 GPa, and these two phases coexist up to 26.5 GPa. The HP X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurement shows that Eo of Se experiences a pressure-induced shift to high energy, evidencing strongly charge transfer between Fe and Se under high pressure. Our results shed lights on the correlation between crystallographic/electronic structure and superconductivity in this material.

Recently, layered copper chalcogenides ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}X$ family $(X=\mathrm{S}, \mathrm{Se}, \mathrm{Te})$ has attracted tremendous research interests due to their high thermoelectric performance, which is partly due to the superionic behavior of mobile Cu ions, making these compounds ``phonon liquids.'' Here, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and its temperature evolution of the less studied single crystal ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{Te}$ by the combination of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments. While the band structure of the ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{Te}$ shows agreement with the calculations, we clearly observe a $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ surface reconstruction from both our low temperature ARPES and STM/STS experiments which survives up to room temperature. Interestingly, our low temperature STM experiments further reveal multiple types of reconstruction patterns, which suggests the origin of the surface reconstruction being the distributed deficiency of liquidlike Cu ions. Our findings reveal the electronic structure and impurity level of ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}\mathrm{Te}$, which provides knowledge about its thermoelectric properties from the electronic degree of freedom.

Exotic phenomenon can be achieved in quantum materials by confining electronic states into two dimensions. For example, relativistic fermions are realised in a single layer of carbon atoms, the quantized Hall effect can result from two-dimensional (2D) systems, and the superconducting transition temperature can be enhanced significantly in a one-atomic-layer material. Ordinarily, 2D electronic system can be obtained by exfoliating the layered materials, growing monolayer materials on substrates, or establishing interfaces between different materials. Herein, we use femtosecond infrared laser pulses to invert the periodic lattice distortion sectionally in a three-dimensional (3D) charge density wave material, creating macroscopic domain walls of transient 2D ordered electronic states with exotic properties. The corresponding ultrafast electronic and lattice dynamics are captured by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and MeV ultrafast electron diffraction. Surprisingly, a novel energy gap state, which might be a signature of light-induced superconductivity, is identified in the photoinduced 2D domain wall near the surface. Such optical modulation of atomic motion is a new path to realise 2D electronic states and will be a new platform for creating novel phases in quantum materials., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

The newfound two-dimensional antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{Gd}{\mathrm{Te}}_{3}$ has great potential in novel magnetic twistronic and spintronic devices because it has the highest carrier mobility among all known layered magnetic materials. Here, we used high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate its Fermi-surface topology and low-lying electronic band structure. The Fermi surface is partially gapped by charge-density waves below the transition temperature. Very steep and nearly linear band dispersion near the Fermi energy contributes to the high carrier mobility in $\mathrm{Gd}{\mathrm{Te}}_{3}$. We find that the scattering rate of the quasiparticle increases linearly as a function of binding energy within a wide energy range, indicating that $\mathrm{Gd}{\mathrm{Te}}_{3}$ is a non-Fermi-liquid metal. Our results in this paper provide a fundamental understanding of this layered antiferromagnetic material to guide future studies on it.

We reveal an ultrafast purely electronic phase transition in ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{2}{\mathrm{NiSe}}_{5}$, which is a plausible excitonic insulator, after excited by an ultrafast infrared laser pulse. Specifically, the order parameter of the strong electron-hole binding shrinks with enhancing the pump pulse, and above a critical pump fluence, a photoexcited semimetallic state is experimentally identified with the absence of ultrafast structural transition. In addition, the bare valence and conduction bands and also the effective masses in ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{2}{\mathrm{NiSe}}_{5}$ are determined. These findings and detailed analysis suggest a bare nonequilibrium semimetallic phase in ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{2}{\mathrm{NiSe}}_{5}$ and the strong electron-hole binding cannot be exclusively driven by Coulomb interaction.

Two-dimensional materials provide extraordinary opportunities for exploring phenomena arising in atomically thin crystals. Beginning with the first isolation of graphene, mechanical exfoliation has been a key to provide high-quality two-dimensional materials, but despite improvements it is still limited in yield, lateral size and contamination. Here we introduce a contamination-free, one-step and universal Au-assisted mechanical exfoliation method and demonstrate its effectiveness by isolating 40 types of single-crystalline monolayers, including elemental two-dimensional crystals, metal-dichalcogenides, magnets and superconductors. Most of them are of millimeter-size and high-quality, as shown by transfer-free measurements of electron microscopy, photo spectroscopies and electrical transport. Large suspended two-dimensional crystals and heterojunctions were also prepared with high-yield. Enhanced adhesion between the crystals and the substrates enables such efficient exfoliation, for which we identify a gold-assisted exfoliation method that underpins a universal route for producing large-area monolayers and thus supports studies of fundamental properties and potential application of two-dimensional materials.

The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 has a Curie temperature TC of about 270 K, which can be raised above room temperature by tuning the Fe deficiency content. To achieve insights into its ferromagnetic exchange, we have studied the critical behavior by measuring the magnetization in bulk Fe5GeTe2 crystal around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition. The analysis of the magnetization by employing various techniques including the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm analysis achieved a set of reliable critical exponents with TC = 273.7 K, beta = 0.3457, gamma = 1.40617, and delta = 5.021, suggesting a three-dimensional magnetic exchange with the distance decaying as J(r) ~ (r)$^-4.916, which is close to that of a three-dimensional Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic coupling., 22 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures

Triangular lattice of rare-earth ions with interacting effective spin-$1/2$ local moments is an ideal platform to explore the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, crystal electric fields, and geometrical frustration. The Yb delafossites, NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch=O, S, Se) with Yb ions forming a perfect triangular lattice, have been suggested to be candidates for QSLs. Previous thermodynamics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin rotation measurements on NaYbCh$_2$ have supported the suggestion of the QSL ground states. The key signature of a QSL, the spin excitation continuum, arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, has not been observed. Here we perform both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as detailed thermodynamic measurements on high-quality single-crystalline NaYbSe$_2$ samples to confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 40 mK, and further reveal a clear signature of magnetic excitation continuum extending from 0.1 to 2.5 meV. The comparison between the structure of the magnetic excitation spectra and the theoretical expectation from the spinon continuum suggests that the ground state of NaYbSe$_2$ is a QSL with a spinon Fermi surface., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

We report on the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of two new double-perovskites synthesized under high pressure; Pb2CaOsO6 and Pb2ZnOsO6. Upon cooling below 80 K, Pb2CaOsO6 simultaneously undergoes a metal--insulator transition and develops antiferromagnetic order. Pb2ZnOsO6, on the other hand, remains a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K. The key difference between the two compounds lies in their crystal structure. The Os atoms in Pb2ZnOsO6 are arranged on an approximately face-centred cubic lattice with strong antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange couplings. The geometrical frustration inherent to this lattice prevents magnetic order from forming down to the lowest temperatures. In contrast, the unit cell of Pb2CaOsO6 is heavily distorted up to at least 500 K, including antiferroelectric-like displacements of the Pb and O atoms despite metallic conductivity above 80 K. This distortion relieves the magnetic frustration, facilitating magnetic order which in turn drives the metal--insulator transition. Our results suggest that the phase transition in Pb2CaOsO6 is spin-driven, and could be a rare example of a Slater transition., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Accepted as a regular article in Phys. We report the synthesis of Na1-xCaxIrO3 (x = 0–1) at 3 GPa and 900 °C by using the high-pressure technique. Structure analysis indicates that all samples characterize in the post-perovskite (Ppv) structure. Physical properties characterizations reveal that Na1-xCaxIrO3 shows an insulator-metal transition (IMT) at x ≤ 0.1, and then exhibits a metal-insulator transition (MIT) with further increasing the Ca concentration to a level between x = 0.6 and 0.7. The transitions are associated with a gradual alternation of the paramagnetic ground state to an antiferromagnetic one due to the increase of Ir4+ ions (S = 1/2, t2g5) in the nonmagnetic Ir5+ (S = 0, t2g4) host. The IMIT are discussed by involving the delicate interactions in 5d oxides such as the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electronic correlation, width of the 5d t2g band, and the crystal-field splitting energy within the t2g shell. The observation not only would be instructive for inducing novel electronic states via tuning the delicate interactions in 5d oxides but also might pave a way for studying the continuous crossover of a band insulator to a Mott insulator.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals material is a focus of research for its widespread application in optoelectronics, memories, and spintronics. The ternary compound Nb2SiTe4 is a van der Waals semiconductor with excellent air stability and small cleavage energy, which is suitable for preparing a few layers counterpart to explore novel properties. Here, properties of bulk Nb2SiTe4 with large in-plane electrical anisotropy are demonstrated. It is found that hole carriers dominate at a temperature above 45 K with a carrier active energy of 31.3 meV. The carrier mobility measured at 100 K is about 213 cm2⋅V−1⋅s−1 in bulk Nb2SiTe4, higher than the reported results. In a thin flake Nb2SiTe4, the resistivity ratio between the crystalline axes of a and b is reaching about 47.3 at 2.5 K, indicating that there exists a large anisotropic transport behavior in their basal plane. These novel transport properties provide accurate information for modulating or utilizing Nb2SiTe4 for electronic device applications.

We report a systematic NMR study on [Sr4Sc2O6]Fe-2(As1-xPx)(2), for which the local lattice parameters of the iron-pnictogen (FePn) layer are similar to those of the series LaFe(As1-x'Px')O, which exhibits two segregated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order phases, AFM1 at x' = 0 - 0.2 and AFM2 at x' = 0.4 - 0.7. Our results reveal that the parent AFM1 phase at x = 0 disappears at x = 0.3 - 0.4, corresponding to a pnictogen height (h(pn)) from the Fe plane of 1.3-1.32 angstrom, which is similar to that of LaFe(As1-x'Px')O and various parent Fe pnictides. By contrast, the AFM2 order reported for LaFe(As0.4P0.6)O does not appear at x similar to 0.8, although the local lattice parameters of the FePn layer and the microscopic electronic states are quite similar. Despite the absence of the static AFM2 order, reemergent dynamical AFM spin fluctuations were observed at approximately x similar to 0.8, which can be attributed to the instability of the AFM2 phase. We suggest this re-enhancement of AFM spin fluctuations plays a significant role in enhancing the T-c to 17 K for x = 0.8 - 1. Finally, we discuss the universality and diversity of the complicated magnetic ground states from a microscopic point of view, including the difference in the origins of the AFM1 and AFM2 phases, and their relations with the high superconducting transitions in Fe pnictides.

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) bearing long-time pursuing are still very rare. We herein identified magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in EuCd2Sb2, a semimetal in type IV magnetic space group, via performing high magnetic field (B) magneto-transport measurements and ab initio calculations. For the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure of EuCd2Sb2, external B larger than 3.2 T can align Eu spins to be fully polarized along the c-axis and consequently drive the system into a ferromagnetic (FM) state. Measurements up to B ~ 55 T revealed a striking Shubnikov-de Hass oscillation imposed by a nontrivial Berry phase. We unveiled a phase transition from a small-gap AFM topological insulator into a FM WSM in which Weyl points emerged along the {\Gamma}-Z path. Fermi arcs on (100) and (010) surfaces are also revealed. The results pave a way towards realization of various topological states in a single material through magnetic exchange manipulation., Comment: 31 papges,10 figures, 2 tables

The extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) in nonmagnetic semimetals has inspired growing interest owing to both intriguing physics and potential applications. We report results of synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and electrical transport measurements on TaAs2 under pressure up to ~ 37 GPa, which revealed an anisotropic compression of the unit cell, formation of unusual As-As bonds above 9.5 GPa, and enhancement of metallicity. Interestingly, the MR of TaAs2 under pressure changed gently, which at 1.7 GPa is 96.6% and at 36.6 GPa is still 36.7%. The almost robust MR under pressure could be related to the nearly stable electronic structure unveiled by the ab initio calculations. We reveal the electronic structure in YbCd2Sb2, a thermoelectric material, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and time-resolved ARPES (trARPES). Specifically, three bulk bands at the vicinity of the Fermi level are evidenced near the Brillouin zone center, consistent with the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. It is interesting that the spin-unpolarized bulk bands respond unexpectedly to right- and left-handed circularly polarized probe. In addition, a hole band of surface states, which is not sensitive to the polarization of the probe beam and is not expected from the DFT calculation, is identified. We find that the non-equilibrium quasiparticle recovery rate is much smaller in the surface states than that of the bulk states. Our results demonstrate that the surface states can be distinguished from the bulk ones from a view of time scale in the nonequilibrium physics.

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials have attracted considerable attention in the nanomaterial community, which could provide a unique platform to study magnetism at the nanoscale. Along this direction, many interesting results have been reported, including the electric field control of magnetism and topological spin textures. In this report, we present a rapid and spatially resolved imaging method to study the dimensionality-dependent magnetic properties of Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) nanoflakes. Our method is named as polar magneto-optical Kerr imaging microscopy magnetometry (p-MIMM), which is made possible by analyzing the intensity evolution of wide-field polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) images that were collected by varying magnetic fields, thicknesses, and temperatures. In particular, spatially resolved MOKE hysteresis loops can be acquired in the FGT nanoflakes with a submicrometer resolution. By analyzing the evolution of the relative (saturated) MOKE intensity as a function of temperature, we further study the critical exponent and universality class and its dependence on the FGT nanoflake thickness. Combining the polar MOKE images with the calculated MOKE hysteresis loops, a detailed magnetic phase diagram summarizing an evolution of the stripe domain, single domain, and paramagnetic state is further validated. Our results suggest that the wide-field p-MIMM can be conveniently used for rapidly examining the magnetic properties of versatile vdW magnetic materials.

The layered Cr2Ge2Te6 (CrGT) has captured vast attentions because it is capable of retaining the long-range ferromagnetic order even in its monolayer form, thus offering potential applications in spintronic devices. We report herein the Raman spectra of CrGT under pressure up to 35.1 GPa at room temperature. We observed a structural phase transition at ∼14 GPa as was revealed by a change in pressure derivate frequencies of the E g 3 and A g 1 modes. Both of the two peaks became broad and the A g 1 mode eventually disappeared with further increasing the pressure. Raman modes above 26.4 GPa could not be experimentally observed, suggesting that the CrGT was pressed into the amorphous phase. Interestingly, a pressure-induced soft phonon mode is identified in CrGT at ∼23 GPa by dynamical property calculation. The phonon instability at the Brillouin zone boundary T point is suggested as the driving force for the experimentally observed crystalline-to-crystalline phase transition at ∼ 18 GPa. The appearance of soft phonon might indicate the possibility of superconductivity induced by much higher pressure.

Considering the slight deformation of the paper honeycomb sandwich plate in the vibration, the stiffness coefficient of the paper honeycomb sandwich plate was equivalent to the elasticity. The analytical model of natural frequency related to the structural and material parameters of the paper honeycomb sandwich plate and mass of block was derived. Subsequently, 5 different paper honeycomb sandwich plates and 3 different blocks were chosen to modify the analytical model by finite element method and verify it by experiment. The results show that the modifying factorl is 0.606 and the error between analytical and experimental results is less than 10%. In the future, the analytical model can be used to predict the natural frequency of paper honeycomb sandwich plate with different structural parameters under different blocks. Therefore, it provides the necessary theoretical reference for the optimization design of paper honeycomb sandwich plate.

Different two-dimensional materials, when combined together to form heterostructures, can exhibit exciting properties that do not exist in individual components. Therefore, intensive research efforts have been devoted to their fabrication and characterization. Previously, vertical and in-plane two-dimensional heterostructures have been formed by mechanical stacking and chemical vapor deposition. Here we report a new material system that can form in-plane p-n junctions by thermal conversion of n-type SnSe2 to p-type SnSe. Through scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory studies, we find that these two distinctively different lattices can form atomically sharp interfaces and have a type II to nearly type III band alignment. We also demonstrate that this method can be used to create micron sized in-plane p-n junctions at predefined locations. These findings pave the way for further exploration of the intriguing properties of the SnSe2-SnSe heterostructure., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures

We present our study on the mechanical and electronic properties of two-dimensional phthalocyanines (2D-Pc) under external strain using first principles and pz-orbital tight-binding model calculations. The Poisson's ratio and in-plane stiffness calculated in the harmonic elastic strain range are found to be 0.43 and 73.41 J m−2, indicating that 2D-Pc is much softer than graphene. The 2D-Pc can bear the same critical uniform strain as pristine graphene, which reduces the hopping integrals of π-electrons and narrows the width of the bands near the Fermi level. Consequently, the band gap and effective masses of carriers undergo ascending trends as the strain increases. The present study provides meaningful insight into the strain induced variation of electronic transport performance in 2D-Pc and other 2D tetrapyrrole macrocyles.

LaZnAsO has been studied mainly in the thin film form that was indicated as a wide-gap insulator with the gap size of ∼2.3 eV. We herein report the synthesis of polycrystalline bulk LaZnAsO compound for the first time under a high pressure of 6 GPa. Effect of oxygen deficiency on the electric and magnetic properties of the compound was also investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and specific heat. The bulk LaZnAsO crystallized into the ZrCuSiAs-type structure with the space group P 4/ nmm , isostructural with the layered LaFeAsO . It is semiconducting with a thermal activation energy of ∼0.8 eV, and the semiconductivity was highly robust against oxygen deficiency up to 25 at.%. The virtue will benefit the development of a diluted magnetic semiconductor.

Plasma treatment is a powerful tool to tune the properties of two-dimensional materials. Previous studies have utilized various plasma treatments on two-dimensional materials. We find a new effect of plasma treatment. After controlled oxygen-plasma treatment on field-effect transistors based on two-dimensional SnSe 2 , the capacitive coupling between the silicon back gate and the channel through the 300nm SiO 2 dielectric can be dramatically enhanced by about two orders of magnitude (from 11 nF/cm 2 to 880 nF/cm 2 ), reaching good efficiency of ion-liquid gating. At the same time, plasma treated devices show large hysteresis in the gate sweep demonstrating memory behavior. We reveal that this spontaneous ion gating and hysteresis are achieved with the assistance of a thin layer of water film automatically formed on the sample surface with water molecules from the ambient air, due to the change in hydrophilicity of the plasma treated samples. The water film acts as the ion liquid to couple the back gate and the channel. Thanks to the rich carrier dynamics in plasma-treated two-dimensional transistors, synaptic functions are realized to demonstrate short- and long-term memories in a single device. This work provides a new perspective on the effects of plasma treatment and a facile route for realizing neuromorphic devices.

The maximum vibration transmissibility of paper honeycomb sandwich structures with different sizes of honeycomb core under various static stresses was investigated using the sine frequency sweep test. The effects of the cell length of the honeycomb, the thickness of the sandwich structure, and the static stress on the maximum vibration transmissibility were evaluated and a linear polynomial equation for evaluating the maximum vibration transmissibility was obtained. The results show that the maximum vibration transmissibility increases steadily with the increase in the cell length of the honeycomb, the thickness of the sandwich structure, and the static stress. The proposed equation for the maximum vibration transmissibility is suitable for predicting the maximum vibration transmissibility of paper honeycomb sandwich structures. In addition, the fitted three-dimensional diagrams of the effects of the factors on the maximum vibration transmissibility derived from the evaluation equation were shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

For electronic and photoelectronic devices based on GeSe, an emergent two dimensional monochalcogenide with many exciting properties predicted, good electrical contacts are of great importance for achieving high device performances and exploring the intrinsic physics of GeSe. In this article, we use temperature-dependent transport measurements and thermionic emission theory to systematic investigate the contact-barrier heights between GeSe and six common electrode metals, Al, Ag, Ti, Au, Pt and Pd. These metals cover a wide range of work functions (from ~ 3.6 eV to ~ 5.7 eV). Our study indicates that Au forms the best contact to the valence band of GeSe, even though Au does not possess the highest work function among the metals studied. This behavior clearly deviates from the expectation of Schottky-Mott theory and indicates the importance of the details at the interfaces between metals and GeSe., 10 pages, 4 figures

Polycrystals of Ba0.5K0.5Fe1.9M0.1As2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) synthesized at high pressures show quasi-periodic spikes in the magnetization loop at 2 K owing to successive flux jumps, while the single crystals are observed as absence of jumps. The Zn-doped crystal indicates higher frequency flux jumps than that of Zn-free samples, because of the reduction of grain size and enhancement of grain boundary effect. However, the Co-, Ni- and Cu-doped crystals show less jumps duo to the increased granularity. Our present results suggest that the flux jump in the textured polycrystals is controlled largely by the grain boundary as the flux pining effect rather than the intrinsic dopants.

Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R-3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3. The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li+ ions on cooling below 140K. The effects of substituting Co on the spin-chain compound Sr3Co2O6 with Zn were investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and specific heat measurements. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to describe the successful substitution of Co in Sr3Co2O6 with Zn. The substitution was carried out by a method involving high pressures and temperatures to obtain Sr3CoZnO6, which crystalized into a K4CdCl6-derived rhombohedral structure with a space group of R-3c, similar to the host compound. With the Zn substitution, the Ising-type magnetic anisotropy of the host compound remarkably reduced; the newly formed Sr3CoZnO6 became magnetically isotropic with Heisenberg-type characteristics. This could probably be ascribed to the establishment of a different interaction pathway, –Co4+(S=1/2)–O–Zn2+(S=0)–O–Co4+(S=1/2)–. Details of the magnetic properties of Zn substituted Sr3Co2O6 were reported.

This paper evaluates the compression deformation behaviour and energy absorbing properties of honeycomb paperboards with different thicknesses under homogeneous vertical static compression loading. Each piece of the static compression stress and strain curves of the honeycomb paperboards is similar and comprises three parts of compression deformation (elastic region, plateau region, and densification region), which reflects the mechanical properties such as approximately linear elastic deformation, large plastic deformation with local collapse and densification. The unit volume deformation energy and strain curves and two kinds of static compression cushioning curves show that within the elastic region and plateau region of the stress and strain curves, the honeycomb paperboards hold better energy absorbing properties and the change of the cushioning factor with an increase in the thickness of honeycomb paperboards is very small.

Na doping of post-spinel CdRh2O4 was achieved over the full composition range to NaRh2O4 using high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Na occupies the Cd site and that the host structure is retained, in sharp contrast to what was observed for spinel CdRh2O4, where Na was not accommodated at all. As the Na content was increased, the electrically insulating state changed to a conducting state at a critical composition close to x = 0.75 in Cd1−xNaxRh2O4. The specific heat data confirm that the density of electronic states at the Fermi level was enhanced around this composition, suggesting that the metal–insulator transition is likely induced by band filling. In addition, unusual antiferromagnetism was observed in several compounds with intermediate Na concentrations, and this phenomenon was seemingly independent of the metal–insulator transition.

Single crystals of the osmium-containing compound Ca3OsO6 have been successfully grown under high-pressure conditions, for the first time. The crystal structure of Ca3OsO6 were characterized as an ordered double-perovskite structure of space group P2(1)/n with the Ca and Os atoms being fully ordered at the perovskite B-site. The electromagnetic analysis shows that the crystal exhibits a semiconductor-like behavior below 300 K and undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at 50 K. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc.
