A series of full-Heusler alloys, $\rm Fe_2V_{1-x}W_xAl$, $0 \leq x \leq 0.2$, was prepared, characterized and relevant physical properties to account for the thermoelectric performance were studied in a wide temperature range. Additionally, off-stoichiometric samples with similar compositions have been included, and a 10~\% improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit was obtained. The V/W substitution causes i) a change of the main carrier type, from holes to electrons as evidenced from Seebeck and Hall measurements and ii) a substantial reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity due to a creation of lattice disorder by means of a distinct different mass and metallic radius upon the V/W substitution. Moreover $ZT$ values above 0.2 have been obtained. We present a novel cluster-expansion (CE) approach for the first-principles modeling of temperature and concentration dependent alloy properties. While the standard CE method includes temperature effects only via the configurational entropy in Monte Carlo simulations, our strategy also covers the first-principles free energies of lattice vibrations. To this end, the effective cluster interactions of the CE have been rendered genuinely temperature dependent, so that they can include the vibrational free energies of the input structures. As a model system we use the phase-separating alloy Fe-Cu with our focus on the Fe-rich side. There, the solubility is derived from Monte Carlo simulations, whose precision had to be increased by averaging multiple CEs. We show that including the vibrational free energy is absolutely vital for the correct first-principles prediction of Cu solubility in the bcc Fe matrix: The solubility tremendously increases and is now in quantitative agreement with experimental findings.

Based on density functional theory the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo_3Al_2C in its well established ��-Mn type ($P4_{1}32$) crystal structure is investigated. In particular, its thermodynamical and dynamical stabilities are studied by calculating lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. It is found that the fully stoichiometric compound is dynamically unstable. However, compounds with carbon vacancies, i.e., Mo_3Al_2C_{1-x}, can be dynamically stabilized for vacancy concentrations x > 0.09. By means of a simple thermodynamical model we estimate x ~ 0.13-0.14 for Mo_3Al_2C_{1-x} at the experimental preparation temperatures. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations thermoelectric properties are derived for Sb-doped skutterudites MPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ with M=Ba,La,Th. It is predicted that the originally very small absolute values of Seebeck coefficients $|S|$ of the undoped compounds is increased by factors of 10 or more for suitable dopings. The optimal dopings correspond to a "magic" valence electron number for which all electronic states up to a (pseudo)gap are filled. The theoretical findings are corroborated by measurements of $S$ for LaPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ skutterudites. DFT derived vibrational rattling-like modes for LaPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ indicate a small value for the lattice thermal conductivity which in combination with a large value of $S^2$ makes the La-based skutterudites appear as promising thermoelectric materials., Comment: 5 pages, 10 figures

Using different experimental techniques combined with density functional based theoretical methods we have explored the formation of interface-stabilized manganese oxide structures grown on Pd(100) at (sub)monolayer coverage. Amongst the multitude of phases experimentally observed we focus our attention on four structures which can be classified into two distinct regimes, characterized by different building blocks. Two oxygen-rich phases are described in terms of MnO(111)-like O-Mn-O trilayers, whereas the other two have a lower oxygen content and are based on a MnO(100)-like monolayer structure. The excellent agreement between calculated and experimental scanning tunneling microscopy images and vibrational electron energy loss spectra allows for a detailed atomic description of the explored models., 14 pages, 11 figures

Combining experiments and ab initio models we report on $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ as members of a novel class of superconducting skutterudites, where Sr or Ba atoms stabilize a framework entirely formed by Ge-atoms. Below $T_c=5.35$ K, and 5.10 K for $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$, respectively, electron-phonon coupled superconductivity emerges, ascribed to intrinsic features of the Pt-Ge framework, where Ge-$p$ states dominate the electronic structure at the Fermi energy., 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

The present {\em ab initio} study shows that in BaBiO$_3$, Bi$^{3+}$ sites can trap two holes from the valence band to form Bi$^{5+}$ cations. The trapping is accompanied by large local lattice distortions, therefore the composite particle consisting of the electronic-hole and the local lattice phonon field forms a polaron. Our study clearly shows that even $sp$ elements can trap carriers at lattice sites, if local lattice relaxations are sufficiently large to screen the localised hole. The derived model describes all relevant experimental results, and settles the issue of why hole doped BaBiO$_3$ remains semiconducting upon moderate hole doping., Physical Review Letters, accepted (2009)

The surface stabilized MnO(100)-like monolayer, characterised by a regular c(4x2) distribution of Mn vacancies, is studied by hybrid functionals and discussed in the light of available scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy data. We show that the use of hybrid functionals is crucial to account for the intermingled nature of magnetic ineractions, electron localization, structural distortions and surface phonons. The proposed Pd(100) supported Mn3O4 structure is excellently compatible with the experiments previously reported in literature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Two-dimensional manganese oxide layers have been grown on Pd(100) and have been characterized by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The complex surface phase diagram of MnOx on Pd(100) is reported, where nine different novel Mn oxide phases have been detected as a function of the chemical potential of oxygen mO. Three regions of the chemical potential of oxygen can be identified, in which structurally related oxide phases are formed, often in coexistence at the surface. The different regions of mO are reflected in the oxidation states of the respective Mn oxide nanolayers as revealed by the Mn 2p and O 1s XPS binding energies. The MnOx nanolayers form two-dimensional wetting layers and it is speculated that they mediate the epitaxial growth of MnO on Pd(100) by providing structurally graded interfaces., 24 pages, 12 figures
