In this paper, we develop formulation of a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) to optimally size a battery unit (BU) ultracapacitor (UC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for plug-in electric vehicle (EV). In this application, the objectives were to minimize cost, weight, volume of the HESS simultaneously maximizing the remaining cycle life of the BU at the end of the driving cycle. The MOOP is solved by the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm type 2 algorithm. Detailed mathematical models for the BU and UC are given. The thermal effect on performance and sizing are also included in the formulation. The power demand by the EV powertrain is shared amongst the BU and HESS by two methods: First is by using wavelet transformation, while the second is by using power split ratio. The ratio of the power (i.e., power split) handled by each storage unit was determined by the optimizer. A sensitivity analysis was conducted for the power splitting ratio verification. The problem was solved for using the urban dynamometer driving schedule and the highway fuel economy test driving profiles. This has resulted in sizing of an HESS with lower cost, volume, and weight than those existing in literature. Finally, the effect of changing the motor type on the MOOP result was investigated. This paper addresses the analysis of three-phase squirrel-cage induction machine (IM) with interturn short-circuit (ITSC) fault and its influence on direct torque control (DTC). The particularities of the DTC such as its behavior, its standard heuristic derivation, and its nature of been a nonlinear hysteresis-based predictive controller are exploited, thus allowing the improvement and development of alternative explanations to the phenomena. The understanding of DTC and the development of the current state–space model of the asymmetric IM, presented here for first time in the literature, enables the analytical treatment of the research topic and the discovery of several DTC reactions to the fault. The ITSC impact on DTC and its reaction leads to the following twofold characterizations: first, unobservable and visible effects, and second, compensation and tolerant reactions. For purposes of simulation, a plug-and-play configurable circuit-block for the asymmetric IM was developed based on Norton's equivalent circuit. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the assertiveness of the developed analyses and theoretical findings, which allows future research in online fault diagnostics and condition monitoring of inverter-fed IM with this type of fault. Inductive power transfer (IPT) technology has been approved to be convenient and reliable interface for charging and discharging the electric vehicles (EVs). Precise model for such system can help designers and researchers to anticipate, optimize, and evaluate its behavior amid the development. Thus, this paper presents a physics-based co-simulation platform for the bidirectional IPT system (BIPTS) in EVs’ applications. The platform is established through the coupling between finite element and circuit analysis. The power electronic converters and controllers are developed in Simulink; and the power pads are modeled in Magnet environment. The two parts are lined together through the compatible Simulink plug-in tool. In addition, a state-space dynamic mathematical model for the same BIPTS is derived and implemented in MATLAB environment. A 1.2 kW BIPTS is analyzed under different dynamics by both models and the results are compared. The effect of the nonlinearities and the magnetic material characteristics on the BIPTS's performance is assessed, in terms of errors and harmonics analysis. The analysis considered both the full and light loading operating conditions in the system. Finally, a small-scale prototype for a BIPTS is built, tested, and compared with the co-simulation results for verification purposes. The proposed co-simulation could provide accurate prediction for the system's dynamics, during both charging and discharging operation. Electric vehicle (EV) can act as an energy consuming device or a distributed energy resource in the concepts known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and grid-to-vehicle (G2V). The bidirectional wireless power interface is a successful choice for this application, since it provides automatic, reliable, and safe operation. Therefore, this paper presents modeling and assessment analysis for the steady-state performance of bidirectional inductive wireless power transfer system (BIWPTS) in EV implementations. The analysis is presented for the three main compensation configurations: LC-series, LC-parallel, and LCL-topology. Moreover, the steady-state equivalent circuit-based mathematical models for all topologies are developed. These models were used to precisely determine the system response during V2G and G2V operations based on Fourier series. The study presents evident criteria to pick among the different BIWPTS structures in the diverse applications. The proposed analyses were verified both in simulation and experiment. The results demonstrate the ability of the proposed models to provide accurate estimation for BIWPTS performance under various operating and control conditions. Also, the evaluation analysis shows that LCL-topology is more appropriate for the bidirectional operation due to the simple design and control requirements, and being less sensitive to the misalignment. A flexible, automatic, reliable, and safe charging and discharging system for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid EVs is crucial in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation. The bidirectional inductive wireless power transfer system (BIWPTS) is an ideal solution in this situation. With authentic power-flow models for the BIWPTS in hand, designers and operators can predict, optimize, and analyze the interaction performance between the EV and the grid. Thus, this paper presents a harmonics-based theoretical power-flow model for BIWPTS for charging and discharging EVs in V2G applications. The proposed model provides accurate estimation for the active and reactive power flow during V2G and grid-to-vehicle modes. Moreover, the impact of the circuit losses and harmonics, due to the high-frequency power inverters, on the power-flow performance is investigated. This effect is stated mathematically by four novel power-flow criteria formulas. New conditions for achieving maximum active and reactive power, and unity and zero power-factor system operation, are also developed. The sensitivity of the circuit performance to the variation of its parameters has been studied. For validation purposes, a computer-based model and experimental platform of BIWPTS for EV applications are developed and tested. A good magnetic design of a wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging system requires accurate characterization of the equivalent circuit parameters. This is while considering the effect of the magnetic core and the conductive shielding layers. In the literature, such an analysis is done using 3-D finite element analysis, which makes the design and optimization process time-consuming and computationally expensive. In this paper, an integrated analytical model for the characterization of a circular wireless power transfer EV pads is utilized. This analytical model provides a valuable tool to optimize the design process. This model is utilized when evaluating the objective function for each individual in the multiobjective Pareto Optimality optimization algorithm. This paper presents an improved complex-vector dynamic model for a three-phase induction machine (IM) with stator interturn short-circuit fault. The paper proposes an accurate and meaningful approach to the faulty stator leakage inductance and describes a nonlinear phenomenon in the faulty circuit. The asymmetric model is developed in detail and represented in state-space (SS) form with the flux-linkages as the SS variable. Based on the proposed model, steady-state complex-vector, operational, and sequence component equivalent circuits are derived for fault detection and identification purposes. For reasons of verification, the model is simulated in MatLab environment and experimentally corroborated for a 1HP three-phase squirrel-cage IM. The simulations and experiments are compared at no-load and loading condition for both transient and steady-state response. The permanent regime analysis studies the model with respect to the fault severity factor, fault resistance, and load variation. This paper presents a cost effective control algorithm for standalone batteryless photovoltaic (PV) systems. The control is driven by a fuzzy-based maximum power point tracker which has the capabilities to maintain high-energy conversion efficiency under different weather and load conditions. General design considerations are presented based on the linearization of the dynamic model of the entire system which consists of PV panel, Cuk converter, and motor load. For our particular fuzzy-MPPT controller, these design considerations are combined with an artificial intelligent technique to achieve the optimum control design. Furthermore, the developed control algorithm has voltage regulation capability to protect the load from overvoltage during light load conditions and a fast digital overload protection. The transient and steady-state performance of the entire system was modeled by a nonlinear state-space representation. This paper details the modeling and development of an improved controller design for a dc flywheel energy storage system (FESS) driving circuit. The driving system is based on a bidirectional buck–boost converter. The modeling of this converter including the parasitic resistances for all the components was carried out. In this model, the equivalent circuit of the machine was integrated in the converter state-space model for improved accuracy and controllability. The system has two operating modes; when the FESS is charging, the converter operates in the buck mode. A controller was designed to regulate the charging rate through controlling the machine’s terminal voltage. In the discharging mode, the converter operates in the boost mode. A current controller takes over to control the injected current from the machine to the dc bus. The detailed design of both control loops was identified. Simulation results show the accuracy of the derived model and the enhanced performance of the FESS. Further, it is shown that the reversal of power-flow direction was performed seamlessly. A hardware prototype of the converter was implemented and the effectiveness of the developed system was experimentally verified. This paper presents an electromagnetic-artificial intelligence design optimization approach of a wireless power transfer link (WPTL). Electromagnetic solutions from a 3-DFE model of the WPTL were utilized to minimize the field signature around each design while maintaining high efficiency. The reduced field signatures around the WPTL would enable the achievement of designs that are in accordance with international electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards such as international commission on non-ionizing radiation protection guidelines with respect to public exposure levels of EM signatures below 27 \mu \textT . As the optimization process involved utilizing a large number of fitness function evaluations, numerous 3-DFE solutions were required increasing the computational burden. Artificial neural networks were developed, trained, and used to produce the required equivalent 3-DFE solutions to evaluate the fitness function. As a result, this process significantly reduced the computational time by nearly 90%. The genetic algorithm-based optimization process yielded the desired results of electromagnetically compatible WPTL designs at the early development stage satisfying EMC standards. In this paper, the inter-turn short circuit fault detection in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) using an open-loop physics-based back electromotive force (EMF) estimator is presented. The back EMF estimator is designed based upon a current mode tracking scheme. The thermal and saturation aspects of the machine are considered in the design of the estimator. The design procedure and stability criteria of the estimator are presented in detail. The fault detection is carried out based on the difference between the estimated back EMF and a reference back EMF. A 0.8 (kW) PMSM is studied experimentally as well as numerically under different inter-turn fault and operational contingencies. The numerical modeling is accomplished by a finite-element-based model coupled with the thermal network and polluted with inter-turn fault. The acceptable agreement between the simulated and experimental result validates the modeling process. The back EMF estimator fault detection system is led to discriminative inter-turn fault signatures in a fraction of second for wide speed range even in the presence of harmonic loads and dynamic eccentricities. In this paper, a physics-based high-frequency (HF) model of switching power converters including the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) unit cells, heat sink, and connective printed circuit board (PCB) traces combined in a single electrical circuit is presented. The IGBT model includes the HF stray components superimposed on the well-known Hefner IGBT model. The HF components were calculated using a 3-D quasi-static finite element (3-D FE) analysis. The proposed complex model of the IGBT was verified both numerically and experimentally at different switching frequencies. The computed IGBT model was used in a low–high frequency model of a motor-drive system, and the common mode ground current was experimentally verified showing excellent results. This paper presents a real-time energy management algorithm for hybrid ac/dc microgrids involving sustainable energy and hybrid energy storage. This hybrid storage system consists of super capacitors (SC) for ultra-fast load matching beside lithium-ion batteries for relatively long term load buffering. The energy management algorithm aims mainly at managing the energy within the system such that the effect of pulsed (short duration) loads on the power system stability is minimized. Moreover, an average annual saving of around 7% is achieved by shifting loads to off-peak hours. The expected energy needed during a future peak, the time of its occurrence and the current state of charge of both elements of the hybrid storage system are all examples of the inputs to the algorithm. A nonlinear regression technique is used to obtain mathematical models for the uncertain quantities including load and sustainable energy curves.
