In view of the uncertainty and intermittency of wind power, this paper proposes an optimal economical dispatch (ED) model and develops a method to estimate risk and manage hybrid power systems (traditional + wind~power~systems) for the short-term (24 h) operations. The model and the method have taken into account the large wind power penetration and the wind variability. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) refid="ref1"/ algorithm with constraints is applied to solve the ED problem. Value at risk (VaR) refid="ref2"/ and integrated risk management (IRM) refid="ref3"/ are used separately to assess the risk, so that an optimal tradeoff between the profit and risk is made for the system operations. Disasters such as earthquake or tsunami can easily take the lives of thousands of people and millions worth of property in a fleeting moment. A successful emergency evacuation plan is critical in response to disasters. In this paper, we seek to investigate the multi-source, multi-destination evacuation problem. First, we construct a mixed integer linear programming model. Second, based on K shortest paths and user equilibrium, we propose a novel algorithm (hereafter KPUE), whose complexity is polynomial in the numbers of nodes and evacuees. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of algorithm KPUE by a real evacuation network in Shanghai, China. The numerical examples show that the average computation time of the proposed algorithm is 95% less than that of IBM ILOG CPLEX solver and the optimality gap is no more than 5%. Research and design of a C-band (5712 MHz) high-gradient traveling-wave accelerating structure is being carried out at Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The structure consists of 53 regular disk-loaded cells and two waveguide couplers, and its length is about 1 m. Abstract: An extended Gebhart–Block model for large space buildings is proposed in this paper, which is used to predict the vertical temperature distribution of hybrid ventilation. Natural ventilation coupled with air-conditioning is described with a mathematical model. The indoor thermal environment formed by the air-conditioning and the natural ventilation can also be conducted for the potential analysis and optimal use of the natural ventilation. Experiments were carried out in an atrium building in Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences. The opening of a gated community to expand the micro-road network in an urban traffic system is an importance research topic related to urban congestion. To satisfy the demands of opening an early choosing case, this paper proposes a comprehensive selection framework on qualified communities and their appropriate opening times by describing the traffic state at the boundary road network accurately. The traffic entropy model and fuzzy c-means (FCM) method are used in this paper. In the framework, a new opening evaluation entropy model is built using basic theory of the thermodynamic traffic entropy method. The traffic state entropy values of the boundary road network and entropy production are calculated to determinate the opening time. In addition, a specific fuzzy range evaluation standard at a preset gated community is drawn with an FCM algorithm to verify the opening determination. A case study based on the traffic information in a simulated gated community in Shanghai is evaluated and proves that the findings of opening evaluation are in accordance with the actual situation. It is found that the micro-inter-road network of a gated community should be opened as the entropy value reaches 2.5. As the travel time is less than 20 s, the correlation between the opening entropy value and the journey delay time exhibits a good linear correlation, which indicates smooth traffic flow. Traffic safety on urban arterials is influenced by several key variables including geometric design features, land use, traffic volume, and travel speeds. This paper is an exploratory study of the relationship of these variables to safety. It uses a comparatively new method of measuring speeds by extracting GPS data from taxis operating on Shanghai’s urban network. This GPS derived speed data, hereafter called Floating Car Data (FCD) was used to calculate average speeds during peak and off-peak hours, and was acquired from samples of 15,000+ taxis traveling on 176 segments over 18 major arterials in central Shanghai. Geometric design features of these arterials and surrounding land use characteristics were obtained by field investigation, and crash data was obtained from police reports. Bayesian inference using four different models, Poisson-lognormal (PLN), PLN with Maximum Likelihood priors (PLN-ML), hierarchical PLN (HPLN), and HPLN with Maximum Likelihood priors (HPLN-ML), was used to estimate crash frequencies. Results showed the HPLN-ML models had the best goodness-of-fit and efficiency, and models with ML priors yielded estimates with the lowest standard errors. Crash frequencies increased with increases in traffic volume. Higher average speeds were associated with higher crash frequencies during peak periods, but not during off-peak periods. Several geometric design features including average segment length of arterial, number of lanes, presence of non-motorized lanes, number of access points, and commercial land use, were positively related to crash frequencies. Waste sorting is an imperative and significant issue in China, of which sorted-waste collection and transportation are indispensable parts. Despite its vital yet practical significance, few studies research mathematical models or algorithms of waste collection and transportation from the perspective of waste sorting. To address this issue, we extend a novel transportation model for the waste management system, namely, capacitated location routing problem with queuing time (CLRPQT) and design a cross-entropy and simulated-annealing based hyper-heuristic algorithm (CE-SAHH) for it. The main idea of this paper is three-fold: (1) As a particular property of this problem, source nodes cannot but need to be served by more than one vehicle that causes queuing time between a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles, which is novel in terms of the proposed model; (2) For the methodological contribution, a character encoding scheme, new decoding procedure, and local search strategy are designed embedded in the proposed method; (3) An integration of simulated annealing strategy and the cross-entropy-based hyper-heuristic algorithm is developed to overcome the combinatorial optimization problem with a more complex solution of this study. Finally, the results and analysis of three numeric experiments on benchmark datasets, new instances of CLRPQT, and simulation data in Shanghai, China, verify the effectiveness and universality of the proposed model and method. • A novel model with interactional routes for sorted-waste transportation is proposed. • A cross-entropy-based hyper-heuristic algorithm is proposed and performs well. • The novel model and method based on sorted waste enrich the waste management system. • Real-life data is used to verify the method and some managerial insights are drawn. This paper presents theoretical and experiment analysis of a hybrid residential hot water (HRHW) supplying system with domestic solar water heater (DSWH) and gas instantaneous water heater (GIWH) in shanghai. Mathematical model of the system has been established and its validity was tested by experiments. Economic analysis has been conducted for the HRHW system and traditional gas water heater systems through simulation along with Shanghai weather condition considering the influence of different minimum temperature rise (MTR) of GIWH. The economic comparison results show that the HRHW supplying system has greater economic benefits than gas water heater with a payback period of 7.2 years, and minimum temperature rise (MRT) of GIWH has low impacts on the supplementary gas consumption for the case in shanghai. Abstract: This paper explores the emergence of biotechnology centers in Shanghai and Bangalore by comparing their development to best practices in the literature for biotechnology cluster growth and development. Interviews with over fifty biotech companies and related institutions in China and India indicate that these regions are developing alternate models of low cost manufacturing and services that build on the current local base of knowledge and expertise. The ability to convert research into successful commercial activity was identified in both regions. The strong research capacity, private sector funding, and entrepreneurial environment deemed critical best practices were limited. The article informs about a study related to the performance analysis of a slanted hydraulic pump of the Taipuhe Pump Station located in Taipuhe valley, Shanghai, China, that has an axial flow. It focuses on analysis of several characteristics of hydraulic pump related to its safe operation, which include impeller elevation, unsteady flow and hydraulic thrust. Further, it mentions that the flow passage was analyzed and the hydraulic thrust was calculated to prevent damage to the bearings.

Abstract: This paper presents a model to quantify the impact of electric power outages on GDP by using Cobb–Douglas production function to develop an economic relationship between the reliability of the electric power supply system and the cost of electric energy unserved. Our findings show that average costs for providing a stable power supply are much lower than disruption costs, which is supported by recurring to the data available of Shanghai. Estimated by using Shanghai’s macroeconomic data of 1990–2006, this relationship indicates that the impact of electricity service disruption on Shanghai’s GDP is about 48.18×108 CNY in 2006, matching an alternative “back-of-envelope” estimate of 50.91×108 CNY. The estimated costs per kWh unserved are 1.81–10.26 CNY in 1990–2006, mirroring the increasing importance of electricity in the period’s economic development. These results demonstrate the usefulness of our approach for quantifying the reliability benefits of investments in electricity infrastructure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

By analyzing the background of land leasing in Shanghai, the hypotheses of the mathematical models of industrial land leasing in Shanghai are proposed, and then, the mathematical models of the land price and land area are presented for analyzing the factors of industrial land leasing. Based on the mathematical models and the district data of Shanghai from 2007 to 2015, the factors influencing industrial land leasing by the district government are studied. It is shown that the influencing factors, such as the land area, GDP, tenure of district mayor, and the distance between the land and the nearest subway station, affect the government behavior on industrial land leasing. An underground passage is constructed in the Bund, Shanghai, which intersects an existing shield tunnel, the East Yan'an road tunnel. This research reports a series of centrifuge model tests conducted to investigate the effect of deep excavation above an existing tunnel. The results reveal that significant tunnel heave can be observed, induced by excavation above. For the test conducted to model the East Yan'an road tunnel, the influenced range of the tunnel extends to about 2·5 times the excavation width away from the boundary of the excavation. Considerable additional bending moments are observed at the crown and invert in the lining of the tunnel below the centre of the excavation, but the additional moments rapidly decrease to be negligible when the tunnel cross-section is 1·5 times the excavation depth away from the centre of the excavation. It is also found that the longitudinal deflection of the tunnel due to excavation above it can be modelled by a Gaussian curve, based on which the location of the inflection points and bending curvature can be obtained conveniently. Comparing tests with different tunnel positions, the tunnel heave decreases exponentially with the tunnel-excavation offset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  Land subsidence is a common geological hazard. The long-term accumulation of land subsidence in Shanghai has caused economic loss to the city. Since the 1990s, engineering structures have become a new cause of land subsidence. The concept of the geology-environmental capacity of buildings is put forward. The main factors involved in land subsidence were determined and related to the floor area ratio. The relationship was assessed using the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for four typical regions in Shanghai, in order to give some guidance in respect of urban planning. On the basis of a generalized interdisciplinary method that consists of a modification of Hamilton–Ostrogradski principle by expanding the Lagrange function with two components that address the functions of dissipation energy and the energy of external conservative forces, a mathematical model is presented of an electromechanical system that consists of the force section of a magneto-levitation non-contact maglev suspension in a prototype traction vehicle. The assumption that magnetic potential hole, generated naturally by means of cryogenic equipment, is present in the levitation suspension, serving to develop the model system. Contrary to other types of magnetic cushion train suspensions, for instance, maglev–Shanghai or Japan–maglev, this suspension does not need a complicated control system, and levitation is possible starting from zero train velocity. As high-temperature superconductivity can be generated, the analysis of levitation systems, including the effect of magnetic potential holes, has become topical. On the basis of the model of a prototype maglev train, dynamic processes are analyzed in the levitation system, including the effect of the magnetic potential hole. A system of ordinary differential equations of the dynamic state is presented in the normal Cauchy form, which allows for their direct integration by both explicit and implicit numerical methods.
