The feasible region $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the collection of points $(x,y)$ in the unit square such that there exists a sequence of graphs whose edge densities approach $x$ and whose induced $F$-densities approach $y$. A complete description of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ is not known for any $F$ with at least four vertices that is not a clique or an independent set. The feasible region provides a lot of combinatorial information about $F$. For example, the supremum of $y$ over all $(x,y)\in \Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ is the inducibility of $F$ and $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(K_r)$ yields the Kruskal-Katona and clique density theorems. We begin a systematic study of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ by proving some general statements about the shape of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ and giving results for some specific graphs $F$. Many of our theorems apply to the more general setting of quantum graphs. For example, we prove a bound for quantum graphs that generalizes an old result of Bollob\'as for the number of cliques in a graph with given edge density. We also consider the problems of determining $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ when $F=K_r^-$, $F$ is a star, or $F$ is a complete bipartite graph. In the case of $K_r^-$ our results sharpen those predicted by the edge-statistics conjecture of Alon et. al. while also extending a theorem of Hirst for $K_4^-$ that was proved using computer aided techniques and flag algebras. The case of the 4-cycle seems particularly interesting and we conjecture that $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(C_4)$ is determined by the solution to the triangle density problem, which has been solved by Razborov., Comment: revised according to two referee reports

We give the first exact and stability results for a hypergraph Tur\'{a}n problem with infinitely many extremal constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. This includes an example of triple systems with Tur\'{a}n density $2/9$, thus answering some questions posed by the third and fourth authors and Reiher about the feasible region of hypergraphs. Our results also provide extremal constructions whose shadow density is a transcendental number. Our novel approach is to construct certain multilinear polynomials that attain their maximum (in the standard simplex) on a line segment and then to use these polynomials to define an operation on hypergraphs that gives extremal constructions., Comment: Minor change

For positive integers $n,r,s$ with $r > s$, the set-coloring Ramsey number $R(n;r,s)$ is the minimum $N$ such that if every edge of the complete graph $K_N$ receives a set of $s$ colors from a palette of $r$ colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on $n$ vertices, that is, a subset of $n$ vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case $s=1$ corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on $R(n;r,s)$ which imply that $R(n;r,s) = 2^{\Theta(nr)}$ if $s/r$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. The upper bound extends an old result of Erd\H{o}s and Szemer\'edi, who treated the case $s = r-1$, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. A fundamental result in extremal set theory is Katona's shadow intersection theorem, which extends the Kruskal-Katona theorem by giving a lower bound on the size of the shadow of an intersecting family of $k$-sets in terms of its size. We improve this classical result and a related result of Ahlswede, Aydinian, and Khachatrian by proving tight bounds for families that can be quite small. For example, when $k=3$ our result is sharp for all families with $n$ points and at least $3n-7$ triples. Katona's theorem was extended by Frankl to families with matching number $s$. We improve Frankl's result by giving tight bounds for large $n$., 20 pages

The triangle covering number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that hit all triangles. Given positive integers $s,t$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +t$ edges and triangle covering number $s$, we determine (for large $n$) sharp bounds on the minimum number of triangles in $G$ and also describe the extremal constructions. Similar results are proved for cliques of larger size and color critical graphs. This extends classical work of Rademacher, Erd\H os, and Lov\'asz-Simonovits whose results apply only to $s \le t$. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Motivated by the Erdos-Szekeres convex polytope conjecture in $R^d$, we initiate the study of the following induced Ramsey problem for hypergraphs. Given integers $ n > k \geq 5$, what is the minimum integer $g_k(n)$ such that any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $g_k(n)$ vertices with the property that any set of $k + 1$ vertices induces 0, 2, or 4 edges, contains an independent set of size $n$. An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and discover a general partitioning phenomenon which allows us to determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs. A special case is the ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph $F$ consisting of two disjoint sets $e$ and $f$ whose vertices alternate in the ordering. We show that for all $n \geq 2r + 1$, the maximum number of edges in an ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph not containing $F$ is exactly \[ {n \choose r} - {n - r \choose r}.\] This could be considered as an ordered version of the Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado Theorem, and generalizes earlier results of Capoyleas and Pach and Aronov-Dujmovi\v{c}-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

Let $F$ be a strictly balanced $r$-uniform hypergraph with $e>2$ edges and $r$-density $m$. We give a new short proof of the fact that the Tur\'an number $\ex(n, F)$ is greater than $c\, n^{r-1/m} (\log n)^{1/(e-1)}$ where $c$ depends only on $F$. The previous proof of this for $r=2$ by Bohman and Keevash and for $r \ge 3$ by Bennett and Bohman used a random greedy process and its analysis using the differential equations method. Our proof uses elementary probabilistic arguments together with a (nontrivial) classical result about independent sets in hypergraphs., Comment: This argument was first found by Kohayakawa, Kreuter, and Steger for a very special case and more recently by Ferber-Mckinley-Samotij in the generality that appears below

The size-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph $H$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of $H$ yields a monochromatic copy of $G$. Size-Ramsey numbers of graphs have been studied for almost 40 years with particular focus on the case of trees and bounded degree graphs. We initiate the study of size-Ramsey numbers for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Analogous to the graph case, we consider the size-Ramsey number of cliques, paths, trees, and bounded degree hypergraphs. Our results suggest that size-Ramsey numbers for hypergraphs are extremely difficult to determine, and many open problems remain.

The well-known Ramsey number $r(t,u)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every $K_t$-free graph of order $n$ contains an independent set of size $u$. In other words, it contains a subset of $u$ vertices with no $K_2$. Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced a more general problem replacing $K_2$ by $K_s$ for $2\le s

Chung, Graham, and Wilson proved that a graph is quasirandom if and only if there is a large gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue. Recently, the authors extended this characterization to k-uniform hypergraphs, but only for the so-called coregular k-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we extend this characterization to all k-uniform hypergraphs, not just the coregular ones. Specifically, we prove that if a k-uniform hypergraph satisfies the correct count of a specially defined four-cycle, then there is a gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue., 15 pages. Let n \geq l \geq 2 and q \geq 2. We consider the minimum N such that whenever we have N points in the plane in general position and the l-subsets of these points are colored with q colors, there is a subset S of n points all of whose l-subsets have the same color and furthermore S is in convex position. This combines two classical areas of intense study over the last 75 years: the Ramsey problem for hypergraphs and the Erd\H os-Szekeres theorem on convex configurations in the plane. For the special case l = 2, we establish a single exponential bound on the minimum N, such that every complete $N$-vertex geometric graph whose edges are colored with q colors, yields a monochromatic convex geometric graph on n vertices. For fixed l \geq 2 and q \geq 4, our results determine the correct exponential tower growth rate for N as a function of n, similar to the usual hypergraph Ramsey problem, even though we require our monochromatic set to be in convex position. Our results also apply to the case of l=3 and q=2 by using a geometric variation of the stepping up lemma of Erd\H os and Hajnal. The independence number of a hypergraph H is the size of a largest set of vertices containing no edge of H. In this paper, we prove new sharp bounds on the independence number of n-vertex (r+1)-uniform hypergraphs in which every r-element set is contained in at most d edges, where 0 < d < n/(log n)^{3r^2}. Our relatively short proof extends a method due to Shearer. We give an application to hypergraph Ramsey numbers involving independent neighborhoods.

Let $H$ be a triple system with maximum degree $d>1$ and let $r>10^7\sqrt{d}\log^{2}d$. Then $H$ has a proper vertex coloring with $r$ colors such that any two color classes differ in size by at most one. The bound on $r$ is sharp in order of magnitude apart from the logarithmic factors. Moreover, such an $r$-coloring can be found via a randomized algorithm whose expected running time is polynomial in the number of vertices of $\cH$. This is the first result in the direction of generalizing the Hajnal-Szemer��di theorem to hypergraphs.

A triple system is cancellative if no three of its distinct edges satisfy $A \cup B=A \cup C$. It is tripartite if it has a vertex partition into three parts such that every edge has exactly one point in each part. It is easy to see that every tripartite triple system is cancellative. We prove that almost all cancellative triple systems with vertex set [n] are tripartite. This sharpens a theorem of Nagle and Rodl on the number of cancellative triple systems. It also extends recent work of Person and Schacht who proved a similar result for triple systems without the Fano configuration. Our proof uses the hypergraph regularity lemma of Frankl and Rodl, and a stability theorem for cancellative triple systems due to Keevash and the second author.

For various triple systems $F$, we give tight lower bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a triple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. These are the first such results for hypergraphs, and extend earlier theorems of Bollob\'as, Frankl, F\"uredi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits, and Sudakov who proved that there is one copy of $F$. A sample result is the following: F\"uredi-Simonovits and independently Keevash-Sudakov settled an old conjecture of S\'os by proving that the maximum number of triples in an $n$ vertex triple system (for $n$ sufficiently large and even) that contains no copy of the Fano plane is $p(n)={n/2 \choose 2}n.$ We prove that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q \le cn^2$, then every $n$ vertex triple system with $p(n)+q$ edges contains at least $6q({n/2 \choose 4}+(n/2 -3){n/2 \choose 3}$$ copies of the Fano plane. This is sharp for $q\le n/2-2$. Our proofs use the recently proved hypergraph removal lemma and stability results for the corresponding Tur\'an problem.

For various quadruple systems F, we give asymptotically sharp lower bounds on the number of copies of F in a quadruple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Furedi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits and Sudakov who proved under the same conditions that there is one copy of $F$. Our proofs use the hypergraph removal Lemma and stability results for the corresponding Turan problem proved by the above authors.
