Unoriented SL(3) foams are two-dimensional CW complexes with generic singularities embedded in 3- and 4-manifolds. They naturally come up in the Kronheimer-Mrowka SO(3) gauge theory for 3-orbifolds and, in the oriented case, in a categorification of the Kuperberg bracket quantum invariant. The present paper studies the more technically complicated case of SL(4) foams. Combinatorial evaluation of unoriented SL(4) foams is defined and state spaces for it are studied. In particular, over a suitably localized ground ring, the state space of any web is free of the rank given by the number of its 4-colorings., Comment: 26 pages, many figures, comments welcome

Our main result has topological, combinatorial and computational flavor. It is motivated by a fundamental conjecture stating that computing Khovanov homology of a closed braid of fixed number of strands has polynomial time complexity. We show that the independence simplicial complex $I(w)$ associated to the 4-braid diagram $w$ (and therefore its Khovanov spectrum at extreme quantum degree) is contractible or homotopy equivalent to either a sphere, or a wedge of 2 spheres (possibly of different dimensions), or a wedge of 3 spheres (at least two of them of the same dimension), or a wedge of 4 spheres (at least three of them of the same dimension). On the algorithmic side we prove that finding the homotopy type of $I(w)$ can be done in polynomial time with respect to the number of crossings in $w$. In particular, we prove the wedge of spheres conjecture for circle graphs obtained from 4-braid diagrams. The Gram determinant of type $A$ was introduced by Lickorish in his work on invariants of 3 - manifolds. We generalize the theory of the Gram determinant of type $A$ by evaluating, in the annulus, a bilinear form of non-intersecting connections in the disc. The main result provides a closed formula for this Gram determinant. We conclude the paper by discussing Chen's conjecture about the Gram determinant of type $Mb$ evaluated in the Klein bottle., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures

It was proven by Gonz\'alez-Meneses, Manch\'on and Silvero that the extreme Khovanov homology of a link diagram is isomorphic to the reduced (co)homology of the independence simplicial complex obtained from a bipartite circle graph constructed from the diagram. In this paper we conjecture that this simplicial complex is always homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, its homotopy type, if not contractible, would be a link invariant and it would imply that the extreme Khovanov homology of any link diagram does not contain torsion. We prove the conjecture in many special cases and find it convincing to generalize it to every circle graph (intersection graph of chords in a circle). In particular, we prove it for the families of cactus, outerplanar, permutation and non-nested graphs. Conversely, we also give a method for constructing a permutation graph whose independence simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to any given finite wedge of spheres. We also present some combinatorial results on the homotopy type of finite simplicial complexes and a theorem generalizing previous results by Csorba, Nagel and Reiner, Jonsson and Barmak. We study the implications of our results to Knot Theory; more precisely, we compute the real-extreme Khovanov homology of torus links $T(3,q)$ and obtain examples of $H$-thick knots whose extreme Khovanov homology groups are separated either by one or two gaps as long as desired., Comment: 40 pages

We classify rooted trees which have strictly unimodal q-polynomials (plucking polynomial). We also give criteria for a trapezoidal shape of a plucking polynomial. We generalize results of Pak and Panova on strict unimodality of q-binomial coefficients. We discuss which polynomials can be realized as plucking polynomials and whether or not different rooted trees can have the same plucking polynomial., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

We describe in this note a new invariant of rooted trees. We argue that the invariant is interesting on it own, and that it has connections to knot theory and homological algebra. However, the real reason that we propose this invariant to readers is that we deal here with an elementary, interesting, new mathematics, and after reading this essay readers can take part in developing the topic, inventing new results and connections to other disciplines of mathematics, and likely, statistical mechanics, and combinatorial biology. This is an extended abstract of the talk given at the Oberwolfach Workshop "Algebraic Structures in Low-Dimensional Topology", 25 May -- 31 May 2014. The goal of this paper is to address A. Shumakovitch's conjecture about the existence of $\Z_2$-torsion in Khovanov link homology. We analyze torsion in Khovanov homology of semi-adequate links via chromatic cohomology for graphs which provides a link between the link homology and well-developed theory of Hochschild homology. In particular, we obtain explicit formulae for torsion and prove that Khovanov homology of semi-adequate links contains $Z_2$-torsion if the corresponding Tait-type graph has a cycle of length at least 3. Computations show that torsion of odd order exists but there is no general theory to support these observations. We conjecture that the existence of torsion is related to the braid index., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

The algebra of truncated polynomials A_m=Z[x]/(x^m) plays an important role in the theory of Khovanov and Khovanov-Rozansky homology of links. We have demonstrated that Hochschild homology is closely related to Khovanov homology via comultiplication free graph cohomology. It is not difficult to compute Hochschild homology of A_m and the only torsion, equal to Z_m, appears in gradings (i,m(i+1)/2) for any positive odd i. We analyze here the grading of graph cohomology which is producing torsion for a polygon. We find completely the cohomology H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) and H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G). The group H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) is closely related to the standard graph cohomology, except that the boundary of an edge is the sum of endpoints instead of the difference. The result about H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) gives as a corollary a fact about Khovanov homology of alternating and + or - adequate link diagrams. The group H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G) can be computed from the homology of a cell complex, X_{\Delta,4}(G), built from the graph G. In particular, we prove that A_3 cohomology can have any torsion. We give a simple and complete characterization of those graphs which have torsion in cohomology H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G) (e.g. loopless graphs which have a 3-cycle). We also construct graphs which have the same (di)chromatic polynomial but different H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G). Finally, we give examples of calculations of width of H^{1,*}_{A_3}(G) and of cohomology H^{1,(m-1)(v-2)+1}_{A_m}(G) for m>3., Comment: 37 pages, 23 figures

In this chapter (Chapter V) we present several results which demonstrate a close connection and useful exchange of ideas between graph theory and knot theory. These disciplines were shown to be related from the time of Tait (if not Listing) but the great flow of ideas started only after Jones discoveries. The first deep relation in this new trend was demonstrated by Morwen Thistlethwaite and we describe several results by him in this Chapter. We also presentresults from two (unpublished) preprints [P-P-0,P-18].In particular, in Section 2, we sketch two generalizations of the Tutte polynomial of graphs or, more precisely, the deletion-contraction method which Tutte polynomial utilize. The first generalization considers, instead of graphs, general objects called setoids or group systems. The second one deals with completion of the expansion of a graph with respect to subgraphs. We are motivated here by finite type invariants of links developed by Vassiliev and Gusarov along the line presented in [P-9] (compare Chapter IX). The dichromatic Hopf algebra, described in Section 2, have its origin in Vassiliev-Gusarov theory mixed with work of G. Carlo-Rota and W. Schmitt. In Section 3 we describe Tait conjecture on alternating link diagrams and apply developed methods to study adequate diagrams. In Section 4 we apply 2-variable Kauffman polynomial to alternating links and prove, in particular, the second Tait conjecture. In Section 5 we analyze the Kauffman polynomial of adequate diagrams. In Section 6 we show how coefficients of Homflypt polynomial can be used to obtain new information on classical knot invariants (e.g. Morton-Franks-Williams inequality). Khovanov homology for knots has generated a flurry of activity in the topology community. This paper studies the Khovanov type cohomology for graphs with a special attention to torsions. When the underlying algebra is $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2)$, we determine precisely those graphs whose cohomology contains torsion. For a larger class of algebras, we show that torsion often occurs. Our investigation of torsion led to other related general results. The ideas of this paper could potentially be used to predict the Khovanov-Rozansky $sl(m)$ homology of knots (in particular $(2,n)$ torus knots). Rotors were introduced in Graph Theory by W.Tutte. The concept was adapted to Knot Theory as a generalization of mutation by Anstee, Przytycki and Rolfsen in 1987. In this paper we show that Tristram-Levine signature is preserved by orientation-preserving rotations. Moreover, we show that any link invariant obtained from the characteristic polynomial of Goeritz matrix, including Murasugi signature, is not changed by rotations. In 2001, P. Traczyk showed that the Conway polynomials of any pair of orientation-preserving rotants coincide. But it was still an open problem if an orientation-reversing rotation preserves Conway polynomial. We show that there is a pair of orientation-reversing rotants with different Conway polynomials. This provides a negative solution to the problem., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures

We give a short proof for a formula for the number of divisions of a convex (sn+2)-gon along non-crossing diagonals into (sj+2)-gons, where 1<=j<=n-1. In other words, we consider dissections of an (sn+2)-gon into pieces which can be further subdivided into (s+2)-gons. This formula generalizes the formulas for classical numbers of polygon dissections: Euler-Catalan number, Fuss number and Kirkman-Cayley number.
