The learning of algebra represents a difficulty within the mathematics learning process. Precisely because of their epistemological and ontological nature, semiotics provides a good key to understanding the main difficulties that hinder the learning of algebraic objects. The answers to a large scale assessments task that requires a treatment in the sense of Duval of sizeable sample of upper secondary school student is analysed. Statistical analysis allows the nationwide data to be considered according to students' ability levels. The study confirms and quantifies the distance between personal meaning and the cultural meaning attributed to algebraic objects. The difficulties of the manipulation of algebraic expressions is deepened and characterized.

This paper focuses on the importance of covariational reasoning within the processes of mathematics teaching and learning. Despite the internationally recognized relevance of covariation, research shows that only a small percentage of students and teachers is able to adopt covariational reasoning and the majority of mathematics curricula do not contain explicit references to covariational skills. In particular, when covariational reasoning manifests as conceptual knowledge, it becomes challenging to assess, and the need for innovative methods of assessment emerges; there is a need for suitable assessment to highlight the characteristics of covariation and capture the various features that characterize conceptual understanding. Comparative judgement (CJ) is an innovative assessment method based on collective expert judgements of students' work rather than requiring scoring rubrics. Due to its holistic approach, CJ is particularly suitable for assessing complex mathematical competencies, and, as we shall see in this study, it proved to be appropriate for the covariation's assessment. In details, our study aims to investigate the perception and relevance attributed by mathematics teachers to covariation as a theoretical construct and the way CJ can help in the assessment of covariational reasoning skills underlying a less structured modelling task.

In this paper we interpret pervasive difficulties with second degree inequalities as a macro-phenomenon emerging from Large Scale Assessment. In line with the theory of reification, we link common students' difficulties to approaches they use that undermine the intertwining of processes and the ensuing emergent mathematical objects. To frame the movement from process to object, we network the theory of objectification with Duval's semio-cognitive approach. We conclude that students' difficulties can be traced back to a disruption of the dialectical movement between process and object. Thus, the students lose the link to meaning, rooted in mathematical activity, and handle semiotic transformations out of the object-sign relation. Such a phenomenon is conceived as a macro-phenomenon emerging from the Italian educational system.

The role of mathematics in secondary-tertiary transition is subject to increasing analysis in several education contexts. We explore the longitudinal relationships among a standardized test used for assessing secondary school mathematics, high school final grades and the academic progress of a sample of Italian undergraduates. Results from regression analyses showed that the standardized test and high school final grades together are predictive both of the student's academic success in terms of Grade Point Average and of academic credits earned, whereas a more specific relationship emerged between the standardized test and the mathematics exam. This study provides findings on the importance of secondary school mathematics as a predictor of university performance, even in courses where mathematics is a service subject. International literature is increasingly disclosing the relevance of cultural aspects within the processes of teaching and learning mathematics. Knowledge is inextricably linked to the activities in which the subjects engage, and must be considered in relation to the socio-cultural context wherein the activity takes place. Literature reveals the relationship between the background culture (e.g. language, nationality, etc.) of prospective elementary teachers and their beliefs about mathematics and its teaching. In this paper, we define culture with reference to the wider discussion from cross-cultural psychology literature about cultural values, and we investigate if and how differences in individuals' cultural values are related to prospective teachers' beliefs about being successful in mathematics and in its teaching. We adopt a questionnaire from the studies by Schwartz to measure participants' values. We assign each prospective teacher of our sample to a cluster of beliefs and we analyse how the beliefs of prospective teachers are related to their values. Results show that cultural values and beliefs about mathematics are related, while this is not the case for beliefs about the teaching of this subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

National and international large-scale assessments of mathematics show that, in most nations, males achieve better results than females and Italy is one of the countries with a greater gap. Many research studies in mathematics education have analysed this issue, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the sources and characteristics of this gap. This study focuses on a specific Grade 10 task that requires algebraic manipulations of powers with the same base. Item-level analysis enables the study of gender differences on specific content, before using the lenses of mathematics education theories to interpret macro-phenomena emergeing from standardized assessment results. The quantitative analysis, carried out using the Rasch statistical model, highlights a gender gap in favour of males in this task and, furthermore, a variance in choices of incorrect options between males and females; the interviews conducted provide a key to understanding this phenomenon in terms of didactic contract. In the frame of national Italian standardized assessments in mathematics, a didactic phenomenon has been observed concerning students' behaviour when answering an item: students are inclined towards not accepting an output which is not clearly recognizable with something distinct from the starting inputs. The observed effect seems to originate from the teacher-student relationship and could be described as a typical didactic contract situation but it also affects the general relationship between the student and mathematics. Adopting a mixed-method apparatus including large-scale assessments results, questionnaires and interviews, we can describe several behavioural features related to the observed phenomenon. In particular, we show how it is present in different grades and in pupils of different abilities. We consider the 'ruling principle' as a connecting concept for the different constructs used here to analyse this phenomenon, i.e. an organizational or normative criterion that shapes the action of the student facing a mathematical task. We report an example of a research approach aimed at gathering quantitative pieces of evidence of solid findings in mathematics education. The main goal of this project is to provide an additional perspective on solid findings in education, to be used by teachers and by researchers in their work. As a case study, we present a situation of "loss of meaning" in algebra, exploring it with data coming from a large-scale assessment interpreted by means of theoretical lenses. We are able to give information about the extent of the phenomenon and to highlight how the phenomenon is relevant also for high-level students. This approach can provide a link between large-scale assessment results, educational research, and teachers' practices, and suggests further research issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The importance of good mastery of specialised mathematics knowledge for mathematics teachers and prospective teachers is now recognised internationally. This paper presents an exploratory study aimed at investigating how mathematics education courses affect the Mathematics Teachers' Specialised Knowledge (MTSK) of prospective primary teachers. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 118 future teachers, and an analysis of their answers was carried out with the MTSK model. The research highlights positive feedback on the effectiveness of the mathematics education laboratory that was staged, and provides an outline of the beliefs and the knowledge of the prospective teachers. The process of pairing a name with representations or peculiar properties permeates many mathematics classroom situations. In school, many practices go under the label 'definition', even though they can be very different from what mathematicians conceive as a formal definition, and in fact there are substantial differences between these different kinds of practices. This can create difficulties for pupils, since they may encounter non-coherent definitions of the same thing. Features of these schemes are exemplified through the analysis of some algebra high school textbooks, looking at the proposed 'definitions' of monomials and polynomials. In this article, we present the first results of the project OPEN-MATH. The research project aims at acknowledging the need for learning environments with differentiation strategies for all. We developed a model for inclusive mathematics learning, based on the Theory of Objectification and a broad idea of differentiation realized through Open Learning. It poses an interdisciplinary research issue that requires the collaboration of two sub-disciplines pertaining to the area of educational studies: Inclusive Education and Mathematics Education. The results we present here are related to the dialogue between theory and practice, whose outcome is a teaching and learning model for inclusion in mathematics. The construction of the teaching and learning model moves along two complementary paths: (1) concerning the theoretical point of view, we implemented connecting theory strategies to network Open Education and the Theory of Objectification; (2) concerning the methodological point of view, we implemented Educational Design Research. The new teaching–learning model is the result of theoretical and methodological validation in real contexts according to an interdisciplinary approach.
