As the primary resource for preschool children, picture books,and their gender narratives, can unconsciously shape and changechildren’s perceptions of sex roles and gender identity (Bleakley etal., 1988; Connor & Serbin, 1978; Latima, 2020). However, existingstudies show concerning trends in the representation of genderinequality in modern picture books, such as the overwhelmingnumber of male main characters and traditional gender stereotypesof vocations, personalities and habits (Casey et al., 2021; Hamiltonet al., 2006; Lee & Chin, 2019; Terras, 2018). It is thereforeimportant for children’s picture books to have diverse gender descriptionsand improved equal gender representations.Since the second Feminist Movement in the 1960s, gender equalityin UK children’s picture books have been continuously examinedyet slowly improved (Adams et al., 2011; Allen et al., 1993;Capuzza, 2020; Hamilton et al., 2006). Similar studies have beenfar less common in China, as the Chinese picture book market onlydeveloped from the start of the 21 st Century (Xiao, 2021). Onestudy has shown the existence of the traditional gender biases inChinese picture books (Liu & Chen, 2018). Based on the researchgap between these two countries, this study will (1) investigategender representations and narratives in picture books, (2) comparethe similarities and differences between bestselling Britishand Chinese picture books texts from 2010 to 2020. We do so byapplying text mining techniques to analyse gender narratives withinpicture book texts themselves. This follows on from our 2022study where we analysed publisher’s descriptions of texts, ratherthan full text mining of the book’s content (Li et al., 2022).

This paper offers an understanding of the multilayered methodological framework developed and implemented to carry out a Digital Humanities project. The latter classified systematically visuo-linguistic features in contemporary tourism narratives by means of data-driven tagging models, annotations and statistical measurement of the frequency and variance of strategies across digital channels.

We investigate the needs of analyzing historical attitudes to Hitler and Mussolini using digitized historical sources and a computer-assisted approach. We believe that the principles of 'minimal computing' are worth a comparison with established, resource-heavy approaches. In terms of social equity and global access, efficient methods offer opportunities for improvement.

The imagined urban landscapes, structures, and environments of writer H.P. Lovecraft's Providence, RI play a central role in the development of his tales of horror, abomination, and wonder. This project repurposes the tools of digital art history and urbanism to create imaginative reconstructions of these locales across space and time.

This panel will explore the various aspects of what is involved, not only in conceiving and building a 3D infrastructure, but in creating 3D Scholarly editions and developing the viewers that allow stories to be created around them. It will also explore issues around training the community of the infrastructure.

This poster showcases three deployments of virtual reality kits and 360º video design for undergraduate classrooms. It features three examples. The first utilizes a browser-based application that allows users to upload media and view them in a 360º environment. The other examples showcase VR storytelling techniques with consumer-grade 360º cameras.

In Digital Humanities "Distant Listening" scholarship with sound, the expectation is that the data set will be clean and audible and that its metadata will be descriptive and informative.[1] In contrast to this notion, this talk demonstrates the importance of distortions in approximately seventy-five brief "tracks" or recorded songs, stories, and explanations from a folklore recording trip Zora Neale Hurston took in 1935 to Florida and Georgia with Alan Lomax and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle for the Library of Congress. Close listening to her 1935 recordings reveals that social and technical distortions are in line with how Hurston expresses the complexities of authority, authenticity, and subjectivity in her writings, which amplifying black epistemologies of self-making and creating resonant possibilities for imagining new transgressive formulations of cultural identity. This talk will consider how distortions play an important in large-scale digital projects with sound in the humanities.

What role does color play in how we imagine our own world and the world(s) of others? Using machine learning and methods from Explainable AI, we study and explain how color use shaped the geographic imaginaries of the Orient and Occident in two different media: photochromes and autochromes

This panel examine four different approaches to creating digital visualizations: database-driven networks, encoded TEI network analysis using IIIF, a material culture digital archive, and spatial analysis using GIS. Presentations will outline the details of each project and the collaborations necessary for each methodological appraoch to creating visualizations.

This contribution deals with Dynamic Topic Modelling of Austrian historical newspapers (found in the ANNO Corpus), focusing on the time period from the 18th to the mid-20th Century. The aim of the investigation is to uncover the development of the topic surrounding migration from and via Southeast Europe to Austria.

This paper explores representations of holiness in a collection of 63.000 lantern slides. Using the multimodal model CLIP, it sheds light on the transition between the real and the imaginary, the holy and the profane. It demonstrates how CLIP can help scholars deal with complex visual concepts such as holiness.

Our work considers how new advances in pretrained text-to-text generation models might make named entity recognition more accurate, flexible, and streamlined for the digital humanist. We provide an example of how text-to-text generative models can identify mentions of characters, authors, and book names within Goodreads book reviews.

In this presentation, we present the project Access & Discovery of Documentary Images (ADDI), collaborative work that with the U.S. Library of Congress. We will discuss how current scholarship has guided our creation of a digital interface and what we have learned about computer vision through the project.

MemoRekall is a free and open-source web app to annotate a video enhanced by adding notes, documents, or web links. Originally conceived for the preservation and documentation of performing arts, two European citizen science projects (COSMIC and COESO) lead to broaden its uses and develop new functionalities. Both projects share the same methodological approach, based on action research and co-design. This paper will present this co-construction methodology, at the heart of MemoRekall's development from the outset, how it impacted the two new versions of MemoRekall, and its contribution to the study of collaboration in the context of citizen science projects. Participants are invited to explore modelling and annotation through exercises demonstrating music research conducted in Oxford and Vienna. After hands-on ontology design exercises with pen and paper, they are introduced to cutting-edge digital tooling and led through research processes of an ongoing project investigating the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts.

This paper reflects on three interdisciplinary undergraduate digital humanities courses that featured study abroad trips to Rome, Italy and collaborative approaches to student-focused digital projects. Faculty presenters are housed in Digital Humanities, New Media, and Religious Studies, and co-developed courses that prioritize methods for researching, documenting, and visualizing placed-based discourse.

In the last ten years, massive protests against the government and/or unfair elections took place in all three Eastern Slavic countries—Russia (2011/12), Ukraine (2014), and Belarus (2020). In 2022, protesters demonstrated against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. All these protests were mainly organized via social networks, were disseminated in independent media and countered by the official state-owned media. Thus, visual (self-)representations of the protest cultures must be recognized as an integral part of the protests proper. Our project unites close and distant viewing to assess how kaleidoscopic patterns of protest emerge from the constant recombination of specific visual symbols such as banners, flags, slogans, or people marching in the streets. Not only are we interested in a general description of visual and textual (self-)representations of protest in Eastern Europe but we also analyze the patterns of specific protest cultures to describe their symbolic repertoire. In order to achieve this, we build a corpus of visual and textual (self-)representations of protest. We then use deep learning to identify specific symbols in the corpus. These results are utilized to (1) visualize and analyze the differences between official and user-generated content, traditional and new media, and individual countries, and (2) to select specific images and video clips for a qualitative multimodal discourse analysis.

Living with Machines rethinks the impact of technology on the lives of ordinary people during the Industrial Revolution. The project queries metadata for large-scale newspaper collections. This poster describes the workflow of building a database infrastructure that facilitates quicker and easier humanities research on heterogeneous and complex newspaper data.

The goal of this project is to create structured metadata for the Women Film Pioneers Project (WFPP), enrich it with authority data, and link it in a sustainable way to other datasets on women film pioneers. The poster outlines the methodological approach of the project and presents preliminary results.

Composed to mark Franz Joseph's state visit to Wilhelm II, Strauss' Kaiser Walzer (Emperor Waltz) provokes the question: which Emperor was it for? We investigate this in a case study of interdisciplinary collaboration in digital musicology, employing a FAIR data multimedia corpus associated with the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts.

Harold Garfinkel's unique style of language is considered central to his unconventional approach and continues to be used by members of ethnomethodology. In the context of digitizing the sub-collection "Occasion Maps" of the Garfinkel Archive, an attempt is being made to break down the structure of concepts using graph-based methods.

We present the Zoetrope prototype, a tool that can process raw features from the state of the art neural frameworks for multimodal information extraction and make them available for interactive exploratory analysis in a web-based tool. Zoetrope currently is built around the use case of analyzing German news videos for narrative strategies.

Inaugurated in 2022, the CANEVAS consortium brings together researchers from various humanities disciplines whose common interest is to handle video corpora in their research. This poster present specific issues raised by these corpora as well as a selection of tools and methods identified by the Canevas research community.

This paper presents the first release of a graph database of derived data of online fiction corpora taken from various sources in five different languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Indonesian, Korean).

This paper discusses interdisciplinary collaborative practices based on the AdA project (meaning “Affektrhetoriken des Audiovisuellen” https://projectada.github.io/) in which institutionally situated research groups from computational sciences and film studies developed approaches for the analysis of the temporal dynamics of audiovisual expressivity by bringing together a theoretically informed methodology of film analysis and computational video analysis and semantic video annotation. In an earlier publication, we already presented how co-building a Digital Humanities tool could be seen as instrumental genesis. In it we concentrated on the iterative development of a visualisation framework to highlight the need for a common language and for the consideration of time needed for collaboration.We would like to pursue the reflection on the instrumental genesis (Rabardel, 1995) of collaboration tools along the time dimension. We saw that every step of tool development for such qualitative and exploratory research requires time: may it be for tool sketching, development, testing, or documenting its usage for manual annotation.

This workshop will help participants make audio, video, and its interpretations more discoverable and usable through the use of the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) standard for audio and video to produce, publish, and sustain W3C Web Annotations for individual and collaborative audiovisual editions, exhibits, and playlists. The workshop format will include introductions to IIIF, AudiAnnotate, Audacity, and GitHub using model, collaborative AudiAnnotate projects called the "SpokenWeb Anthology," made from recordings from the SpokenWeb Consortium and "Radio Venceremos, the Rebel's Radio Station," which features recordings from Radio Venceremos ("Radio We Will Overcome"), a popular, clandestine radio station that the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) created to broadcast news and analysis from the mountains of Morazán, El Salvador during the eleven year Salvadoran Civil War (1981-1992).

This article examines the joint makulatura campaign of 1974–91 by the Soviet Supply Committee (Gossnab) and the State Committee for Publishing (Goskomizdat), a campaign in which readers could exchange collected wastepaper for vouchers to obtain the popular and otherwise unavailable titles of the makulatura book series. Through analysis of the debate in Literaturnaia gazeta on the perceived waste and shortage of printing paper, the official campaign instructions, and the changing “editorial” paratexts of the makulatura books, the article sheds light on the public negotiations about the campaign and the value and reuse value of paper and reading matter in late Soviet society. By materializing the abstract relation between paper and books, the makulatura experiment turned both paper scrap and books into collection items and readers into paper suppliers. This materialization gave both readers and writers a marked awareness of paper as a raw material and a medium of cultural production. However, the shift of readers from the receiver to the producer side of the textual communication circuit also implied a collision of logics from the different perspectives of authors, collectors, publishers, and supply agencies.

We examined changes in the number of authors per paper for science and technology papers (agricultural sciences, engineering and technologies, medical sciences, and natural sciences) in Korea. We employed the Scopus database to examine the change in the number of authors in papers, which were published from 2000 to 2015 in the 234 Korean academic journals indexed on Scopus. We found that the global trend of growth in the number of authors per paper is evident in Korea as well. While there was little evidence of a correlation with the citation per paper, a positive correlation was found between with the field-weighted citation impact, another measure of a paper’s impact, in medical and natural science papers. In terms of the type of collaboration, we found that international collaboration papers had the highest number of authors, followed by national and institutional collaborations. The number of authors per paper was highest for those published in the top 10% journals by Source Normalized Impact per Paper, followed by Scopus-indexed journals, while papers published in Korea Citation Index had the lowest number of authors per paper. We propose that the rise in the number of authors per paper in Korean papers may be ascribed to many Korean research programs encouraging group research and the widespread availability of the internet, which has stimulated joint research efforts and encouraged international collaboration.

This thesis explores office paper as a medium between 1920 and 1960 in Sweden. During this period, paper was muchdebated due to the number of standards that were implemented. These standardstransformed paper, making it a modern medium in many different ways. The aim ofthe present thesis is to analyze how office paper was reshaped to solveproblems regarding production, reproduction, circulation and use ofinformation. This reshaping, through a series of standards, addressed issuessuch as order, speed, quantity and control of information in the officematerial information system, and was also seen as a way of altering officepractices. The study draws on a wide range of source materials concerning the standardizationof paper: reports, articles from newspapers and journals, standard documents,ads, manuals and handbooks. Theoretically, the thesis applies a materialperspective on communication and mediation, meaning that focus is on howinformation is processed, rather than on the content being circulated.Following this perspective the office is understood as an information system,and paper as an information technology. A crucial methodological claim is thatthe ideas and notions of paper, and paperwork, that various actors expressedwhile discussing standards, materialized in changed paper sizes andstandardized forms. The analysis shows how the paperformat created from the proportion of the page as 1:√2 was associated to aspecific idea of scientific rationality. This rationality was imagined to betransmitted to the information system through adjusting office machines andfurniture, and other paper technologies, to the width and breadth of theA4-format. Another consequence of this process was that paper based informationbecame a quantifiable entity. Following the fixation of paper sizes was theredesigning the graphic interfaces of forms, which resulted in the “the modernform”. The 1940s also saw the emergence of a new occupation, the “form man”; ascience of forms; and the idea of the system of forms, to rationalize paperbased communication.

A JRSM reader recently told me that she was switching back to the print publication because visiting the website (jrsm.rsmjournals.com) to read JRSM wasn't part of her routine and was never likely to be. The only way to read JRSM, then, was to pick up the print edition. We know visitors to journal websites are usually seeking specific information, a particular article that they have discovered via a web search. They may not necessarily be regular readers of your journal, and have no particular loyalty to it. Reading one article is unlikely to convert them into regular readers. The first challenge for journals, therefore, is to develop online services that will be valuable to readers and are not possible in print. Despite radio, television, the Internet, and now Kindle, people still enjoy reading a book or a journal in print. Will print journals ever disappear entirely? Many will die – eventually – but plenty will survive to satisfy our desire for touching words on a page. The journals that endure will publish much else besides research. They will major on editorials, essays and reviews. They will synthesize knowledge for a community instead of publishing random bites of information. They will also need to entertain. The second challenge for journals, therefore, is to develop a print version that will be valuable to readers without publishing research. None of this is new, these prophecies have been written for more than a decade, but the challenge is more immediate. Online-only journals, many with an author-pays model like JRSM Short Reports (shortreports.rsmjournals.com), are attracting a larger number of submissions. Their value is in publishing research quickly and being less selective about their publication policies. JRSM Short Reports is now on PubMed Central and we have applied for full indexing. The online world is moving rapidly in terms of publication of research. Meanwhile, the print world is more sedate but it needs to quicken its speed of change. Bigger, richer, weekly journals have sufficient resources to adapt and have an in built inertia that can weather the winds of change. The predicament is more acute for smaller journals, and their battle for survival, because of the laws of economics, will become more acute. These are dangerous times. JRSM floats somewhere between the big beasts of the publishing ocean and the minnows battling for survival, although our aspiration is to swim with big beasts rather than be consumed like minnows. As such, we are considering the next stage in the evolution of both print and online versions of JRSM. We have many ideas for development but we welcome suggestions from JRSM readers about how the journal might better serve their needs in print and online while positioning itself cleverly for the future of medical journals.

I have chosen this particular case from my experience not so much because it presents any novel, sophisticated or complex scientific method of forensic interest, but because i t shows strikingly how a relatively minor and unimportant personal experience can lead to the rapid solution of a major problem. About 2 years ago a partnership was formed between a subsidiary of the Thomson Organisation and another Company, whose main business was to handle a number of diaries and notebooks said to have been written by Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator. On the face of i t these were extremely important documents, because it was known that Mussolini did keep a diary throughout the years of his rise and fall, and there are some crucial points in Italian history on which the diaries could shed a badly-needed light.
