La relazione presenta i risultati degli scavi condotti tra il 1977 e il 1981 presso le imponenti rovine note come Le Mura di Santo Stefano, situate vicino Anguillara Sabazia, appena 3 km a sud del Lago di Bracciano. La fase più antica di occupazione era relativa ad una fattoria di I secolo d.C. Intorno al 200 d.C. viene costruita una serie di strutture, compreso un edificio a pianta rettangolare su tre piani copiosamente decorato con diciannove tipi di marmo, suggerendo così che il complesso avesse un carattere lussuoso, possibilmente parte di un latifundium. Si hanno evidenze di ulteriori attività nel III o inizi IV secolo d.C. Nel IX secolo, dopo un periodo di abbandono, parte del complesso fu convertito nella chiesa di Santo Stefano. L'aula rettangolare fu rioccupata e le restanti rovine usate come cimitero. Si è dedotto che il sito possa aver funzionato come centro di una proprietà medievale, parte della domusculta papale, o in alternativa come un fundus di una struttura monastica. Nell'XI secolo il sito fu abbandonato, dopo ehe i resti di scheletri appartenenti ad almeno 90 individui, e le ossa di tre cani, furono interrati in un pozzo tappato con pezzi di sculture marmoree romane.

Every year, on the traditional anniversary of the founding of Rome, the Mayor reviews the events of the last twelve months and outlines his plans for the future. Last year (the 2,735th anniversary), he began by describing work in progress on conservation and mise-en-valeur in the ancient city. It was wholly appropriate, for the future of classical Rome is a subject which concerns, or should concern, not only the Romans themselves, but all Italian taxpayers (who will foot the bill), town planners and conservation groups throughout Europe—not to mention all readers of ANTIQUITY. The proposals, promoted by the Archaeological Superintendent of Rome, Professor Adriano La Regina, include the creation of an archaeological park extending from the Capitoline to the Appian Way, new museums and—as a matter of extreme urgency—the protection of marble monuments disfigured by pollution. The plans involve both local and national authorities, and in March 1981 Parliament made available over a five-year period the staggering sum of 180,000 million lire (£75 m): 168,000 m for Rome itself, 10,000 m for South Etruria (the area north of Rome) and 2,000 m for Ostia.

Un sondaggio, effettuato nel 1978, rivelò un massiccio riempimento databile, sulla base delle 38 monete identificate, al secondo quarto del V secolo d.C., forse tra il 430 e il 440 circa. S. Cornelia (863583), 15 kilometres north of Rome and midway between Veii and Formello (Figure 1), was rediscovered in 1958 during the South Etruria Survey and excavated by Charles Daniels in 1962–4. It was identified immediately as the domusculta of Capracorum, established by Hadrian I c. 780 (Ward-Perkins 1963: 38; Kahane et al. 1968: 161–4). The site is of lasting importance. Apart from its exceptional intrinsic interest, it provided the first type series of medieval pottery in Lazio and the only fixed (or apparently fixed) points in the chronology of Forum ware and pottery with sparse glaze, both of which are important elements in the debate about the development of early medieval settlement (Luttrell 1975: 271–2; Wickham 1978: 172–9). This paper is an account of the pottery and the evidence for its date.

The 1971 Expedition was in the field for almost a month over Easter, thanks to the continued kindness and good will of the Libyan Department of Antiquities, and further generous financial support from the British Academy, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom Trust, the Society for Libyan Studies and the University of Newcastle.The site of Saniat Gebril lies 300 yards east of the abandoned mud-brick town of Germa. Trial trenching (1965) and surface sherding had shown that at least 5 acres of compact settlement existed there, with the strong likelihood that more sparsely-placed buildings stretched as far as Germa. From the previous work it was thought that the main settlement consisted of a series of smallish mud-brick buildings, occupied from the late-first century A.D. until the early-third century, when the site was abandoned and not subsequently re-occupied.

La cornaline, variete rouge de calcedoine, est depuis longtemps utilisee en bijouterie| les sites archeologiques du Golfe Persique ont livre de nombreux objets en cornaline: les plus anciens proviennent de Tepe Yahya et sont dates du Vmillenaire av. J.-C. L'existence de filons de cornaline dans le Golfe Persique (peninsule de Bushehr) et la decouverte dans les fouilles de Rishahr de fragments de cornaline permettent d'affirmer que cette pierre importee de l'Inde, etait aussi une production locale du Golfe Persique.

The (–)-erythro- and (–)-threo-isomers of 2,3-dihydroxy-3-methylpentanoicacid (I) have been synthesised. The (–)-erythro-isomer has been shown to have the absolute configuration 2R,3R and to be identical with the naturally occurring (–)-acid, a precursor of isoloucine (II), and with the esterifying acid of the pyrrolizidine alkaloid Strigosine.
