The idea of which species are native, based on their biogeographic origin, is central to many policies and programmes. Yet definitions are contested and the meanings of ‘nativeness’ are often complex and confusing for many people. For example, a plant that would be considered 'native' in Australia might have a native bioregion that is thousands of kilometres from a given garden planting. The idea of nativeness is culturally constructed and connotes different meanings in different contexts. As conservation research and practice increasingly incorporate human values and behaviours, operationalising the social dimensions of abstract ecological concepts such as nativeness is needed to generate a more holistic evidence base and improve the management of native and non‐native species. We used a sequential mixed‐methods systematic review approach to review and synthesise literature on people's (including general publics, gardeners, conservationists) perceptions of nativeness of species and landscapes. A meta‐synthesis of qualitative research identified six dimensions that underlie people's perceptions in relation to nativeness: Belonging (a sense that there is a right or wrong place for a species to exist); human influence (the role of humans in moving species outside of their historic ranges); functional compatibility (a species' alignment with the local environment and ecology); amenity (desirable and useful features provided by a species); negative impacts (risk and manageability of detrimental impacts caused by a species); and identity (species forming part of one's place‐based identity). A systematic review of the quantitative urban literature found that most research on perceptions of native and non‐native species and landscapes did not operationalise nativeness in a multidimensional way, focusing predominantly on the ‘Negative impacts’ dimension. This may often be inadequate for meaningfully capturing people's views. Our results also highlight the need to strengthen interdisciplinarity between natural and social sciences, and for better integration of social science theories to improve the interpretability and transferability of research findings. We provide recommendations for future research that operationalises nativeness using a broader range of meanings that will inform a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the human dimensions of conservation issues, especially within the contested and briskly evolving terrain of urban greening. The quality of the housing space is now becoming more important in general social impairment. This is accompanied by an intensive development of studies on the quality of life of residents in the field of spatial development and public perception of the place of residence. The valorisation of the housing space occupies a special position in the area of research on housing. The article concerns the application of the Municipal Audit method for the valorisation of public housing space. The aim of the study is to propose a modification of that method in order to better adapt this method to the assessment of residential structures. The advantage of the audit is its simplicity in the procedural and analytical layer (uncomplicated scoring, the possibility of calculating average values, results visualized spatially on maps), which makes it possible to be widely used, especially by local governments, also in the context of low costs of carrying out such research. In the initial parts of the work brought closer to issues of terminology and the theoretical basis of the valorization in general by referring to its criteria and types. Issues of methodological structure and stages of audit development on foreign and Polish development were also submitted. Further part of the work was devoted to the proposed modifications of the Municipal Audit as the methods of valorisation of public housing space, in particular housing estate. The most significant changes have been made within the directory variable and the scale of assessments. The extension of the list of features subjected to assessment has been dictated by their unambiguous belonging to the overriding category of public housing space and the scale of settlement units, which allows thorough valorization tests due to the possibility of distinguishing relatively small urban units in which analyzes are carried out. It was recognized that the legitimacy of the introduction of a wider scale of assessment is also justified in the possibility of formulating precise schedules of intervention and recovery plans implemented under the settlement urban policy. The essential part of these modifications was formulated on the basis of an valorisation and a questionnaire examination carried out on the Wyzwolenia Estate in Piotrków Trybunalski using the present method. The conducted research also allowed to indicate the important role of social research as a supplement to the results of the audit prepared for the urban subsystem. It is also a form of taking into account social participation in the development of guidelines for the management of housing space. It should also be noted that the study focuses on the study of public housing space, however, depending on the assumed goals, the valorization may be supplemented with the assessment of private housing space as an equivalent component of the general category of the studied space. Jakość przestrzeni mieszkaniowej nabiera współcześnie coraz większego znaczenia w powszechnym odczuciu społecznym. Towarzyszy temu intensywny rozwój badań nad jakością życia mieszkańców w zakresie zagospodarowania przestrzennego oraz społecznego postrzegania miejsca zamieszkania. Artykuł poświęcony został zastosowaniu metody audytu miejskiego do waloryzacji publicznej przestrzeni mieszkaniowej. Celem opracowania jest stworzenie wykazu modyfikacji ukierunkowujących oraz silniej dostosowujących wspomnianą metodę do badania struktur osiedlowych. Zasadnicza część zaproponowanych zmian opracowana została na podstawie badania waloryzacyjnego oraz ankietowego wykonanego na osiedlu Wyzwolenia w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim przy wykorzystaniu metody audytu miejskiego. Przeprowadzone analizy pozwoliły sformułować modyfikacje w obrębie skali ocen oraz katalogu cech poddawanych ocenie w ramach realizacji audytu. Uznano, iż charakter tych zmian odpowiada skali większości osiedli mieszkaniowych oraz pozwoli na precyzyjniejsze planowanie działań interwencyjnych w ramach polityki miejskiej. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły również wskazać na istotną rolę badania społecznego jako uzupełniania dla wyników audytu sporządzonego dla podsystemu urbanistycznego. Jest ono zarazem formą uwzględnienia partycypacji społecznej w kształtowaniu wytycznych do gospodarowania przestrzenią mieszkaniową. Należy też zaznaczyć, iż w opracowaniu skupiono się na badaniu publicznej przestrzeni mieszkaniowej, jednak w zależności od założonych celów waloryzacja może zostać uzupełniona o ocenę prywatnej przestrzeni mieszkaniowej jako równoważnej składowej ogólnej kategorii badanej przestrzeni.

Metodo. Aplicamos una encuesta a investigadores sociales, quienes respondieron un cuestionario electronico que indagaba la opinion y experiencia en algunas de las practicas eticas en los estudios sociales. Resultados. Indican que los efectos nocivos se plantean como probabilidad de repercusiones de ciertas acciones y decisiones del investigador; confirma riesgos como el mal uso y/o la manipulacion de la informacion, la generacion de falsas expectativas en los participantes, la invasion de sus espacios y de su intimidad. EnglishRisks and harms comprisea controversial topic in health sciences social research: they are minimised, denied, or not communicated to study participants. Article 4 of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights stipulates the need to minimise harm, but this provision does not appear to refer directly to social sciences. Objectives: 1) to understand the harmful effects in social research; and 2) to describe the application of Article 4 to harm reduction in this field of research. Methods: We conducted an internet-based survey with social research investigators, asking about their experience and opinions regarding ethical practices in social research studies. Results: Respondents indicated that harmful effects were considered in terms of the repercussions of certain actions and decisions of the investigator,confirms risks such as the misuse and/or manipulation of information, the generation of false expectations of participants, the invasion of their space and privacy. The harms were disclosure of identity, violation of rights and the generation of stigma and prejudice; it brings in other types of harmful effects such as the self-interest of the researcher or his/her institution. Discussion: Social researchers observe Article 4, but this study questions aspects of the social and cultural context and their ethical repercussions.

In this paper, with a view to the high levels of absence due to sickness and presenteeism, it is explored how management and team leadership can be integrated on a more sustained basis in health prevention. Private sector enterprises on one hand, and organisations in the public sector, on the other, pursue and prioritise in this aspect different approaches, which are traceable to their different traditions. Specifically in Germany in the public sector, the principle of due care has had a long tradition that grows out of social responsibility, which contrasts with the perspective of commercial enterprises that emphasises the economic aspect. The study undertakes to determine the particular strengths of each of the sectors and to demonstrate their different approaches. The examination refers in its methodology to qualitative social research. In the systemically structured survey design, Seventy six experts were approached with questions concerning different aspects such as corporate culture, business processes, organisational integration, qualification, risk assessments, and concrete actions in health prevention. Complementary to the expert survey, documents such as corporate guidelines and policies, management tools, results from risk assessments and employee surveys or quality offensives were referred to. This analysis supplied insights on how the declared health prevention policies in an organisation can be effectively implemented at the strategic and operational level in corporate culture and leadership culture with a long-term continuity, and which organisational prerequisites in the corporate hierarchy and corporate decision making and business processes may reinforce and sustain successful implementation of health prevention. Of particular importance in the process is operative management. For the sake of effective team involvement in own and team-specific health prevention, an eight-stage team feedback was devised, which includes elements of self-reflection and perception by others in an iteratively structured process.

In the wake of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), research ethics governance does not just affect the ethical dimensions of social research but also the range of scientific decisions available to researchers. Because of the sensitive status of personal data and the aversion to even minimal risk by what we call “moral bureaucracies”, we are concerned that social network researchers will increasingly limit their research decisions to “safe” options, like reusing anonymized datasets, choosing target populations based on convenience rather than theoretical relevance, and routinely subcontracting fieldwork to professional data collection companies, among others. We also suggest that scientific associations and social scientists in general need to adopt a proactive role in preserving both scientific freedom and genuine ethics advice within this new regulatory framework.

El desarrollo comunitario dual, es una propuesta emergente de la investigación social, que mediante la intervención educativa contribuye decididamente en la solución de problemas que aquejan a la población rural; el efecto dual se logra cuando los actores comunitarios, sincrónicamente y por sí mismos, logran satisfacer sus necesidades apremiantes y potencian su disponibilidad a la resiliencia. Esta propuesta surge de la reflexión que después de 30 años de creado el primer programa, de gran cobertura, para la asistencia económica en beneficio de los sectores más desfavorecidos, y que luego de 85 años de fundada la primera institución para financiamiento campesino, los casos de éxito son escasos; a esas acciones las desfavorecen la asignación de beneficios aislada de todo ejercicio educativo. Recapitulando en nuestra propia praxis, rememoramos que los efectos de la intervención educativa dual, se manifiestan en evidencias de transformación anímica y económica, tanto en las personas como en su colectividad. Desde Rousseau hasta Freire y Rafael Ramírez, se da cuenta de la importancia de la educación en el devenir social.

The deprivation, adversity, and lack of protection for children on the streets of urban Uganda are well known; as is the reality that most of their support is facilitated by Western Missionary operated, non-government organisations (NGOs). However, their approach is problematised as ineffective, oppressive, and colonial. Yet there is a dearth of research from the children’s perspectives, capturing the meaning of such actors’ interventions within their lifeworld’s, and no such literature within the Ugandan context. Therefore, this case study focuses on the ‘Mzungu Phenomenon’, a theme unearthed from critical hermeneutic analyses of the life stories of 30 former street children within an orphanage in Kampala, Uganda. The Mzungu phenomenon refers to the meaning and influence of the Western Missionaries and volunteers that feature within the children’s experiences, captured within their narratives. Underpinned by Ricœur’s narrative philosophy, this study illuminates and problematises the way in which Western NGO actors feature within the children’s lifeworld’s, and the wider ramifications from postcolonial, and postcolonial feminist theoretical perspectives. This includes the perpetuation of colonial legacies, ideologies, and praxis, that contribute to disempowerment for children, their families, and their communities, and the dual oppression of women. Therefore, this piece argues that despite a need to enhance child protection measures in Uganda, the current approaches that do not align with national and international rights-based policies must be further critically examined, challenged, and reformed, to ensure the wellbeing of the children.

There are calls to consider the views of the diverse public in bushfire policy, planning, and management, yet those who do not typically participate in social research and/or government community engagement activities are generally under-represented. A mixed method research design was used, including a survey, intercept and in-depth interviews to study a diversity of views. Concepts of social values, knowledge and practices were drawn on first to examine participants’ relationship to bushfire and second to discuss bushfire engagement. We identified and analyzed three relationships to bushfire: Irrelevant to me; Terror at my door; A rural concern. Participants’ values were more focused on people, pets, and special things than in earlier research and they generally perceived bushfire as solely a domain for experts. There is an opportunity to find ways to resonate with their values and relationships to bushfire, and to shape bushfire research and practice.

Introducing a multidisciplinary special issue on the multilevel dynamics of the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU), this article considers social science ‘impact’ from Brexit-related research, including the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) UK in a Changing Europe initiative and Governance after Brexit programme. The issue draws on the initiative’s Brexit Priority Grant programme, bringing together economists, political scientists, policy analysts and socio-legal scholars. It analyses the UK’s regional and devolution-related Brexit dynamics. The article considers the potential and challenges of cross-disciplinary work and concludes with a critical analysis of Boris Johnson administration’s ‘levelling up agenda’ in a post-Brexit and Covid/Covid-recovery context.

Problematic alcohol and other drug use has a significant societal, personal, and financial burden. Nurses are key in responding to problematic alcohol and other drug use; however, research indicates many nurses hold negative attitudes towards people with substance and alcohol use disorders. Further, little content exists in most undergraduate degrees to address stigma held by new nurses. The objective of this scoping review, structured using Arksey and O'Malley's (International Journal of Social Research Methodology: Theory and Practice, 8 (1), 19-32, 2005) framework, is to examine studies that either explore or attempt to improve the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nurses caring for people who use alcohol and other drugs. Our initial search located 610 articles, and after screening, 14 articles were appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) and included in this review. Most of the papers appraised were small, localized studies using evaluation methods considered low quality, but showed promising results in addressing stigma and confidence in providing care to people who use alcohol and other drugs. This review indicates that a consistent direction for improving knowledge and attitudes among undergraduate nursing students working with people who use alcohol and other drugs is urgently needed. Further studies of interventions, tested with more rigorous evaluation methodologies, are required to extend existing work in this area.

In critical social research the concept of employability is associated with the neoliberal imperative that every individual should become a self-responsible, self-improving and enterprising subject in the increasingly precarious labour markets. Despite the prominence of employability in policies governing young people’s intra-European migration, few studies examine migrants’ subjectivities in this context. Building on narrative data, this article adds to our understanding on how neoliberal subject formations function as an instrument for governing young EU migrants’ lives in conditions of precarious labour. Central to this understanding, it develops the concept of passion to depict young migrants’ quest for obtaining work with opportunities for self-development and self-realisation. This concept contributes to the study of highly qualified intra-EU migration by allowing critical analysis of meanings given to mobility in relation to work; by highlighting dynamics of (self-)precarisation in this context; and by advancing debates on social-structural inequality among EU migrants pursuing their quest for passion.

This article looks at the rise of the conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic. Current social research on conspiracy theories points to two major factors which underline the spread and appeal of conspiracy thinking: social media and the rise of alternative truths;and the rising distrust in science. Both factors, no doubt, contribute to the current "epistemological crisis", but cannot successfully explain a broader "anti-Enlightenment turn". In order to better understand the appeal of conspiracy theories, the author brings into the picture the current rise of radical populism. A comparative look at the two structures of feeling, she argues, allows us to better understand the role of the neoliberal state which has triggered many social fears and, by undermining the idea of the common good, opened up a ground for the polarization of communities.

Las investigaciones sociales comenzaron a visibilizar las experiencias de movilidad migratoria y urbana de jóvenes en Latinoamérica, sin embargo sus movilidades residenciales aún tienen escasa atención. Retomando el nuevo paradigma de las movilidades y la sociologí­a de la experiencia, problematizo abordajes transicionales y analizo las experiencias de movilidad residencial de jóvenes de barrios populares de la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Indago significaciones construidas sobre el hogar y sus (in)movilidades, advirtiendo los procesos de fragmentación urbana y desigualdad social de las ciudades latinoamericanas. Desde una estrategia cualitativa, a partir de entrevistas en profundidad, analizo los datos empí­ricos siguiendo la perspectiva constructivista de la teorí­a fundamentada. Surgieron categorí­as asociadas a experiencias de (in)movilidad residencial, identificadas como forzosas, buscadas e imaginadas. Se tensionan las significaciones acerca de lo juvenil en vinculación con procesos urbanos y sociales, condiciones familiares e institucionales, la conformación y uso de los hogares o los barrios en los que se ubican, desde un análisis centrado en el reconocimiento de las experiencias juveniles.

In this conversation, Claire Alexander discusses the overlap between her social research and biographical trajectories, showing us how shifts in academic work are linked to broader transformations, in this case, linked to the politics of identity, ethnicity, and race in the United Kingdom. Alexander also tells us about the meaning and value of ethnographic work, including her experience of “revisiting” places and maintaining links with her research participants over time. Strongly influenced by Stuart Hall, Claire also talks about the importance of communicating ideas to and generating dialogues with those outside of academia. She reflects on her interdisciplinary academic collaborations and work with civil society organizations, and invites us to be committed to and engaged with our contexts and social transformation. RESUMEN: En esta conversación, Claire Alexander aborda la imbricación entre trayectoria en investigación social y biográfica, y nos muestra, además, cómo giros en el trabajo académico se vinculan con transformaciones más amplias; en este caso, con las políticas de identidad, etnicidad y raza en el Reino Unido. For more than a year and a half, the world has been living in the grips of Covid-19, which has had a serious impact on the lifestyle of the people of all countries. From March 2020, the population of most European countries has been forced to revise the existing rules of everyday life and go into a state of siege. This was due to a poor understanding of power and danger of viral infection that most likely came first from China to Europe in the fall of 2019. Italy was one of the first states, which faced all the negative consequences of the pandemia. The first Italian patient was identified in December 2019. The new disease did not cause any particular alarm among doctors, patients, media, and most importantly, the Italian government. As a result in March 2020 Italian medical system, which was not ready for a massive increase of Covid-19 patients, literally collapsed. Article is based on an analysis of the results of the various research, including materials of Rome Institute for Economic and Social Research (Eurispes), forecasts by consulting companies and world statistics. An attempt has been undertaken to show the changes in consumer behavior in Italy and its impact on the daily life of Italians. © 2021 Institute of Europe Russian Academy of Sciences. The article is aimed at presenting and discussing the theoretical concept of assemblage of memory inspired by and grounded in the creative work done in connection with social research within the framework of participatory theatre. Based on three projects of this kind that I have collaborated on over the last couple of years, all taking memory as their theme, The Method of National Constellations (2014–2016), Prayer: A Common Theatre (2016–2017), and Bieżenki (2018), the concept draws both on artistic, and sociological thinking. An assemblage of memory could be roughly described as a product of creativity, which is constructed using “found” materials, such as stories, images, emotions, behaviours, objects, people even, to compose a new meaningful entity. This is congruent with what became to be known as the assemblage theory, started by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, who suggested that social phenomena, such as collective memory, one could add, should be viewed as dynamic and heterogeneous arrangements of a variety of elements, material and immaterial, natural and artificial, human and non-human, that are dependent on the connections between them rather than their intrinsic qualities. Thus, an assemblage of memory cannot be accessed through text-oriented methodologies that still seem to predominate the humanities (with its focus on the witness and testimony), but requires innovative, creative procedures, which, as exemplified by the above mentioned theatrical projects, are capable of revealing its structure and dynamics.

Purpose Substantial government investment has accelerated innovation activity in children’s social care in England over the past decade. Ethical concerns emerge when innovation seems to be propelled by a drive for efficiency and over-reliance on process output indicators, as well as, or even instead of, improving the lives of children, families and societies. No ethical framework exists at present to act as a check on such drivers. This paper reviews the literature with the aim of considering how best to address this gap. Design/methodology/approach This paper draws on a review of innovation in children’s social care, conducted as part of an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project exploring innovation in services for young people exposed to extra-familial risk and harm. Findings This study proposes a new conception of “trustworthy innovation” for the sector that holds innovation in children’s social care to the standards and principles of the code of ethics for social work. This study offers an ethical framework, informed by the interdisciplinary school of organisational ethics, to operationalise this extended definition; the analytic framework guides policymakers and the practice sector to question at every stage of the innovation process whether a particular model is ethically appropriate, as well as practically feasible within a specific context. Implications for local decision-making and national policy are set out, alongside questions raised for future research. Originality/value This paper is the first to offer an ethical framework for innovation in children's social care. The conception of “trustworthy innovation” offers a guide to policymakers and the practice sector, which they can use to ethically test every stage of the innovation process and make decisions about whether a particular model is ethically appropriate, as well as practically feasible within a specific context.

Aim Internal coherence in research refers to the alignment between ontology (nature of reality), epistemology (nature of knowledge), axiology (values), methodology and methods and is an important but often overlooked element of research quality. We therefore aimed to illustrate the concept of internal coherence in nutrition and dietetics research, and its importance beyond individual elements of study quality. Method A targeted literature search in Nutrition and Dietetics was used to identify research illustrating one example of three main approaches to research (scientific, interpretive and critical inquiry) published between November 2017 and November 2020. Studies were included if they related to education research based on the expertise of the authors, and illustrated diverse points about internal coherence. The authors independently critiqued included studies for internal coherence and synthesised their findings. Results From 76 manuscripts, 14 were identified as describing education research. Of the three selected studies that were critiqued, all had elements of internal coherence, in particular alignment between epistemology and methodology. However, each had elements of misalignment too, specifically between epistemology, axiology and method. The results point to the profession's historical groundings privileging the scientific approach, showing how this can yield misalignments, particularly when describing the limitations of interpretive and critical inquiry approaches. Conclusion This review demonstrates the importance of internal coherence as a marker of quality, over and above existing quality assessment checklists for qualitative and quantitative methodologies. As such, it can help authors, reviewers and editors to improve the quality of nutrition and dietetics research and its reporting.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the challenges posed for the ongoing implementation of multi-agency risk assessment conferences (MARACs) for police forces in England and Wales during the 2020 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach This is rapid response research involving qualitative methods primarily online semi-structured interviewing with a sample of police domestic abuse leads in England and Wales. Findings The findings point to increased use of virtual platforms particularly for MARACs and that this has beneficial consequences both for the police and in their view also for victim-survivors. Research limitations/implications The findings reported here are from policing domestic abuse leads. More work needs to be done to explore the value of engaging in virtual MARACs for all the agencies concerned but also whether MARACs continue to be the best way to ensure the victim-survivor is kept in view. Practical implications The use of virtual platforms carries a range of practice implications for the future of MARACs for the foreseeable future. These range from ensuring attendance of the appropriate agencies to the range and frequency of meetings, to infrastructural support for all agencies to engage. Originality/value This is an original study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council examining police and court responses to domestic abuse during the covid-19 pandemic.

BackgroundTo improve the coverage of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) in Africa, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) developed, tested and validated a new packaging of sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine (SP), as well as specific communications tools designed to improve knowledge of IPTp and the motivation of women to adhere to it, particularly if it is distributed by community health workers (CHW).MethodsThis article describes and analyses the results of an empirical research carried out in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Nigeria and Mozambique, to evaluate the perception and social acceptability of SP for healthcare providers, CHW and pregnant women, and to assess the ability of the new SP packaging and the communications tools to change their perception of SP and improve their attitudes towards IPTp.ResultsThe results indicate that SP’s new individual packaging was perceived by pregnant women and healthcare providers as a “hygienic” and “safe”, with a specific identity. The graphics used in IPTp communications tools were modified according to the respondents’ feedback to make them more culturally and socially sensitive, and then validated. However, although the new blister packaging and IPTp communications tools generated greater confidence and motivation, SP side effects as well as preconceived ideas, particularly regarding its efficacy, remain a challenge that must be addressed to improve IPTp acceptance and compliance by healthcare providers and pregnant women.ConclusionThis participatory approach to social research based on ongoing feedback to the graphic designer provided more empirical evidence to improve and adapt the textual and visual content of communication tools (SP blister packaging, leaflet, user guide) to local contexts and user preferences. Tested and validated in different socio-cultural and socio-political contexts, these tools provide a good basis for the promotion of IPTp in Africa.

Las juegotecas integrales: espacio de encuentro educativo y recreativo entre padres e hijos, constituye una propuesta educativa que surge de un proyecto de extensión solidaria, implementado con la comunidad de la escuela de iniciación deportiva del Politécnico Colombiano Jaime Isaza Cadavid. Se desarrolló una investigación social, con enfoque cualitativo de nivel descriptivo. Con esta propuesta se espera que se propicien espacios educativos y recreativos entre padres e hijos para encontrarse y jugar, posibilitar el protagonismo del niño y que sus padres reconozcan la importancia de compartir espacios de juego con sus hijos. La juegoteca representa un escenario socio cultural y educativo donde la vivencia del juego le da sentido a las relaciones interpersonales, las cuales se experimentan desde, lo hecho, lo sentido y lo expresado. Tanto el niño como el adulto podrán encontrar formas de expresar sus sentimientos y emociones, favoreciendo su crecimiento personal y fortaleciendo sus vínculos afectivos.

Current records of the population in Ukraine are carried out systematically by the relevant bodies and departments of statistics of various levels. It provides an opportunity to quickly obtain the main statistical characteristics of the population in a short time. However, other important parameters of the country’s population, such as ethnic structure, literacy, education, property status and other important indicators, do not take this into account. They can only be installed by census. The article analyzes the results of censuses of some countries of the world, which decided to introduce innovative technologies - SMART-phones, Internet resources - into this process. The study revealed the advantages and disadvantages of such a census format. In the course of the scientific research, statistical indicators of censuses using innovative technologies, which were conducted in the respective years in the USA, Canada, Lithuania, Estonia, Brazil, Australia were analyzed. The basic normative provisions concerning the census procedure in Ukraine, covered in the main legislative documents, as well as the materials of the Institute of Demography and Social Research named after M. V. Ptukha of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which develops the program and questionnaire of censuses in our country. SWOT analysis of the use of SMART technologies in the census was conducted to identify the advantages and disadvantages, as well as to outline the prospects and threats of the census using innovative technologies. Benefits include the ability to quickly collect and organize information, low census costs, compared to the traditional option. The main disadvantages of the latest census should be mantioned the need to develop expensive software with a high degree of personal data protection, as well as the complexity of fully transitioning the census to the online platform. Studying the experience of countries that have already conducted population censuses using innovative technologies indicates the importance of legally binding participation in the census questionnaire (either electronically or traditionally). The possibility of conducting two stages of population census in Ukraine in 2020 is indicated: in the online mode and in the traditional format. Such an approach to the census procedure will allow the coverage of respondents in all regions and settlements of Ukraine.

The Study of Sentiment is an area of science that specializes in the analysis of strong emotions expressed in texts. An opinion is a complete perception of a commodity, service, association, individual or some other form of entity about which a given text is conveyed. This work provides valuable knowledge of the roots of sentiment analysis and how sentiment evaluators can be configured. We demonstrated how to construct a basic classifier and use it as an example. These approaches will eventually change and there will still be the need for a more extensive assessment of emotions. Non-textual material has an important significance in analyses. Photos, photographs, animations and other visual material are also useful in performing social research. Of course, I can see that all these hyperlinks provide essential material. Some other ways of using social media are likes, retweets, reviews on posts and much more! It is hoped that common issues such as avoiding irony and sarcasm would be made less ambiguous. However, there will emerge other issues that will have to be tackled.

Background People with an intellectual disability are more vulnerable to psychological trauma compared with the general population. The aim of this scoping review was to identify the current status of the literature on trauma that is specific to the experiences of adults with an intellectual disability, living in community settings. Methods A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley (International Journal of Social Research Methodology, 2005, 8, 19) framework. Forty-one international papers were reviewed spanning 2000-2020, and their quality assessed using the MMAT. Findings (1) Aggressive behaviours can be symptoms of trauma, (2) there are appropriate assessment tools for the impact of trauma, (3) evidence-based interventions for trauma may be effective, and (4) factors associated with disability can be experienced as traumatic. Conclusion There is a growing body of literature highlighting assessment needs and potential interventions for people with an intellectual disability who have experienced psychological trauma. Further research is needed to develop trauma-informed pathways.

Aim The purpose of this empirical study was to understand, explore and analyse how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mothers of our society, with particular emphasis on Bangladesh, which has so far been a relatively unexplored area. Subject and methods The study adopted qualitative and interpretative methods of social research, including content analysis and a perception study of 223 respondents through a semi-structured questionnaire survey, who were selected using purposive random sampling. The data obtained from the perception study was further complemented through phone interviews. Results The study found that the pandemic has not affected all mothers uniformly; rather, the intensity of its impact varied depending on factors such as the occupation of mothers and their husbands and their family pattern. Despite such variation, all mothers experienced a subsequent increase in workload, challenges while availing routine health facilities and higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and certain behavioural changes. Conclusion However, the worst affected have been the mothers belonging to the lower socio-economic strata because the pandemic has made them and their husbands jobless, leading them towards an uncertain future.

As governments and primary industries work to build the climate resilience of Australian agriculture, individual producers are often called upon to implement strategies to become more adaptive in the face of drought. These strategies include infrastructural changes to agricultural businesses, changes to practices, and the adoption of new skills and knowledge. The transition towards greater drought adaptiveness will also demand broader cultural shifts in the way that drought is defined and approached as an issue facing primary producers. This paper presents the results of a discourse analysis conducted as part of social research exploring the cultural barriers to drought preparedness within the Queensland Government’s Drought and Climate Adaptation Program (DCAP). Focusing on media and government accounts, the analysis found two different ways of framing drought and its management in Queensland agriculture. The first, which is dominant in media accounts, emphasises the disruptive power of drought, presenting it as a profound difficulty for producers that is managed using endurance, hope and ingenuity. This frame adopts highly evocative discursive strategies oriented towards mobilising community sentiment and support for producers. The second, which is less prominent overall, downplays drought’s disruptive power and counters the emotionality of the adversity discourse by presenting drought as a neutral business risk that can be managed using rational planning skills and scientific knowledge. In discussing these two frames, this paper suggests strategies whereby drought adaptation frames might be made more powerful using more meaningful and emotive narratives that showcase it as a vital practice for ensuring agricultural livelihoods and rural futures in a changing climate.

Esta incursión intelectual busca analizar, por una parte, en el estudio combinado de la metodología semiótica o estudio del signo (Ducrot y Todorov, 1976) y el estudio sistemático del proyecto sociológico emprendido por el pensador francés Pierre Bourdieu, una síntesis mediadora capaz de superar la división establecida en las ciencias sociales entre objetivismo y subjetivismo. El objetivo de nuestra invectiva teórica estará marcado por la aplicación del grupo de discusión como la técnica de investigación social más acorde y propicia para escudriñar las relaciones de ambas propuestas metodológicas. Signo (ideología o representaciones simbólicas) y sociología reflexiva crítica (sociología de la sociología) conforman un epítome aplicable de ser un objeto de estudio a través del grupo de discusión. Dado que contamos con una amplia bibliografía de ambas metodologías cualitativas por separado, el artículo aporta finalmente una propuesta basada en las intersecciones teóricas estudiadas.

The dance as well as the art is a part of the life of each individual, but they are also a part of the general processes in society. Dance very frequently absorbs, and nevertheless at the same time reflects the conditions that are distinctive of a specific time and space. The dance body is a medium through which the reactions and responses to a specific problem or condition are articulated. In some examples, the body is used as an instrument to promote values often dictated by the centers of power and authority. However, the dancing body is also a channel through which one can follow reactions and answers to a real problems and hardship. This characteristic will be the subject of this analysis. The Middle Ages was chosen to show the manner and forms of reaction created in crisis situations. Although we have very few authentic sources for this period, it was an additional challenge to go deeper, to explore and to emphasize another function of the dance that is not aesthetic, yet socially engaged. The body is a strong articulator and although it is rarely included in general social research, it provides very interesting material and opportunities to decoded states, attitudes and positions on a collective level. The analysis deals with presenting events that feature the medieval period that have been followed and resulted in specific reactions shaped through several dance forms.

In the text, the author demonstrated that regardless of the prevailing regime, the State, by relying on separate laws for people with disabilities (or any other minority group), has created and continues to create colonies of sorts. In the first part of the article, the author presented the difference between postcolonialism and neo-colonialism in relation to people with disabilities and in Disability Studies. Afterward, he highlighted the illusory nature of research and, above all, educational activities in favor of people with disabilities. He argues that in the case of this group of people, we are dealing with neo-colonial pedagogy rather than a postcolonial one.

This paper investigates the changing interpretation of geography as a scientific discipline by the first three department heads of geography at the university in Pest/Budapest between 1870 and 1920. I scrutinize the stories of János Hunfalvy, Lajos Lóczy and Géza Czirbusz, in their embeddedness to contemporary international scholarly debates on the content, goal and task of geography. Based on this, I develop the following arguments: (1) Academic views of geography were especially diverse in the second half of the 19th century, the early phase of the discipline’s institutionalization, due to the largely different educational and scholarly background of newly become geographers. (2) Despite this diversity, geographers coming from history and social research (e.g. Ritter in Germany and Hunfalvy and Czirbusz in Hungary) mainly interpreted geography as a discipline joining physical and social sciences together by investigating the impact of geographical factors on human history. Geographers with a background in geology, however (e.g. von Richthofen in Germany, Davis in the U.S. and Lóczy in Hungary), mainly regarded geography as physical geography and a full-fledged physical science. (3) Varying approaches to geography at the department in Pest/Budapest were closely following up mainstream international debates, for all three department heads had state-of-the-art knowledge on foreign academic discourses in geography.

The role of women in the family is very influential in welfare as the smallest unit in society. Women must play an active role in changing their own circumstances, especially women who are vulnerable to socioeconomic conditions, the position of women in a modern perspective no longer sees women as mere objects, but rather their position as subjects who play a role in economic life, therefore this study aims to determine their activities and characteristics. Socioeconomic vulnerable women. This research is a form of social research that uses a qualitative descriptive format that aims to describe, summarize various conditions, as situations or various social reality phenomena that exist in society which are the object of research, and attempt to draw that reality to the surface as a characteristic, character, and nature. , sign model, or a description of certain conditions, situations, or phenomena. Women who are socially and economically vulnerable in Darmaguna village are relatively aged 20-40 years, have the status of widows, have low education and limited skills, and have a large number of dependents. In fulfilling physiological, economic, emotional, intellectual, and religious needs, it still shows a very low presentation.

Received 01.09.2020. In the early 21st century, many European countries saw an increased influence of political parties relying on localized communities. Many new regional parties (RPs) emerged, which put the scientific community in need of understanding the reasons behind their strengthening positions in Europe. The present research provides a critical review of the RPs’ definitions, examines their origins, place in the political spectrum, factors of electoral success and geographical distribution of their electorate. The study is based on the analysis of the parliamentary and regional elections results in 43 European countries in 2000–2019. A map of the RP support rate by region has been designed, showing areas of the strongest public support. Its correlation with ethnic and cultural composition, political structure, and uneven regional development of the countries of Western and Eastern Europe has been analyzed. Today, in parliamentary and regional elections, RPs receive more than 5% of votes in the area of around 600 sq. kms, or 40% of the European territory (overseas territories excluded). Particular attention is paid to party strategies in national and regional elections. Modern RPs diversify their programs going far beyond the interests of a particular sociocultural group. In parliamentary elections, they often make alliances with national parties. In turn, national parties sometimes speak in regional elections “under the local brand”. The satisfaction of the RPs’ demands to provide the regions with greater autonomy does not have a significant impact on their strategies, which request increasingly wider powers. Despite the fact that individual regional parties even get seats in national parliaments, they have practically no influence on the state policy shaping. Their rise is associated not with electoral results, but with trends in the European political process. One can speak not about the success of particular parties, but about the advancement of the idea of regionalism. Acknowledgements. OBJECTIVE The aim: To study the intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting quality of life in persons with disability after musculoskeletal injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: A medical and social research was conducted on151 individuals with re-confirmed disability after musculoskeletal injuries. RESULTS Results: It was found that a third of people with disabilities after musculoskeletal injuries (35.8±3.9%) has low quality of life (QoL), females more often than males (OR = 2.73; 95% CI: 1.33-5.59). The following physical determinants of low QoL were identified: severity of disability group (2.77; 1.29-5.92), severity of injury (2.73; 1.11-5.63) related to long-term inpatient treatment (6.36; 2.55-15.86) and need of special tools for rehabilitation (2.42; 1.20-4.92). It was found that QoL in people with disability is decreasing with unemployment (4.44; 2.13-9.23) and reduction in social interaction (2.67; 1.33-5.39) when living with children (3.04; 1.50-6.16), complicated relationship (5.28; 2.54-10.97) and no support in family (3.25; 1.62-6.50). This is accompanied by an increase in the need of psychotherapy (4.07; 2.10-8.24), risky alcohol consumption (3.29; 1.19-9.07) and taking of sedative drugs (2.97; 1.35-6.50). It was established such medical and social determinants of low QoL as inadequate awareness of persons with disability about content of their Individual rehabilitation program (3.85; 1.69-8.76), insufficient covering of special tools (3.41; 1.67-6.96) and dissatisfaction of rehabilitation efficacy (3.79; 1.55-9.28). CONCLUSION Conclusions: It is necessary to improve the system of rehabilitation of persons with disability after musculoskeletal injuries in view of quality of life determinants.

Este artículo analiza desde una perspectiva socio-histórica el papel que jugó la Fundación Ford en la promoción, financiación y exportación del modelo think tank a la Argentina entre los años 1975 y 1983, examinando en particular la relación que existió entre la Fundación y los investigadores de dos centros académicos argentinos fundados en 1975: el Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad (CEDES) y el Centro de Investigaciones Sociales sobre el Estado y la Administración (CISEA). A través de un análisis de la red de centros académicos privados hilada y financiada por la Fundación Ford en Argentina durante estos años, propone examinar el papel de los oficiales de la Fundación como "diplomáticos académicos" para la internacionalización de las ciencias políticas argentinas y como agentes exportadores del modelo think tank al país. Asimismo, interpreta y analiza las repercusiones de las acciones de diplomacia académica y de la financiación de la Fundación en la adquisición del papel de think tanks por parte de los centros de estudios CEDES y CISEA durante la reconstrucción del Estado democrático argentino.

Since 2000, an increasing number of scholarship international students have been entering Chinese universities. Government scholarships provide them money each month to pay for a degree, but most of them are engaged in part-time work even if china officially doesn’t allow international students to work during their studies. This Research aimed to explore the key determinants of international students labour and schooling in China and labour experience contribution to their study. We used the Labor Market Survey (SLM) conducted by LARES (Laboratory of analysis and research in economic and social research) in the year of 2019 in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhejiang and Shandong. The sample includes 400 scholarship students at the Bachelor, Master and PhD level. They were from different major areas, aged between 18 and 35 years old. Results from logistic regression analysis showed that developing relationship, practicing Chinese, tutor income, age, were the key factors that influence scholarship international student’ work while study. The students benefited both positively and negatively from working and studying.

The field of robotics is of great interest to students. This can be seen from the enthusiasm of SMP IT Ikhtiar students who want to take part in socialization activities and robotics workshops held by the Social Research Group, Cognitive Robotics and Advanced Artificial Intelligent Research Center, Electrical Engineering UNHAS. This activity provides knowledge about the basics and current applications of the field of Robotics and teaches students to be able to assemble simple robots using easily obtained electronic materials and components. The workshop was held semi-online where there were 6 (six) people consisting of teacher and student representatives who attended activities in the laboratory and there were also more than 50 students who attended virtually via teleconference. To be able to provide an understanding of robotics for students, it requires qualified external personnel who master the field of electrical engineering, especially robotics. From the comparison of the pre-test and post-test results before and after participating in the activity, it was obtained a significant increase in the knowledge of the students. In addition, students also succeeded in assembling robots using the materials and components that had been provided. As materials for the sustainability of the program, the robots assembled by students were then given to them to be studied again.

In this article, the issue of introducing social norms that should be followed in the process of greeting students in the primary education system of Uzbekistan is examined. The international study of the custom of greeting for all peoples and its importance in the world community, in particular, the peculiarities of this custom in the Uzbek nation, the state of scientific and social research will be analyzed. The topic will discuss verbal units of greeting, gestures, as well as prohibited situations in the process. In the process of harmonious teaching and upbringing, special attention is paid to the habit of greeting in primary school, so the importance of correct and timely formation of this habit is emphasized.

Citizen science has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years due to its potential to educate and engage the public while providing a means to address a myriad of scientific questions. However, the rise in popularity of citizen science has also been accompanied by concerns about the quality of data emerging from citizen science research projects. We assessed data quality in the online citizen scientist platform Chimp&See, which hosts camera trap videos of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and other species across Equatorial Africa. In particular, we compared detection and identification of individual chimpanzees by citizen scientists with that of experts with years of experience studying those chimpanzees. We found that citizen scientists typically detected the same number of individual chimpanzees as experts, but assigned far fewer identifications (IDs) to those individuals. Those IDs assigned, however, were nearly always in agreement with the IDs provided by experts. We applied the data sets of citizen scientists and experts by constructing social networks from each. We found that both social networks were relatively robust and shared a similar structure, as well as having positively correlated individual network positions. Our findings demonstrate that, although citizen scientists produced a smaller data set based on fewer confirmed IDs, the data strongly reflect expert classifications and can be used for meaningful assessments of group structure and dynamics. This approach expands opportunities for social research and conservation monitoring in great apes and many other individually identifiable species., Citizen science has expanded rapidly in popularity, leading to a growing need to ensure data accuracy in citizen science research projects. We validated the accuracy of chimpanzee detection and individual identification data from the online citizen scientist platform Chimp&See, which hosts camera trap videos of chimpanzees and other species across Equatorial Africa. When comparing data from citizen scientists with those of experts who coded the same videos, we found a high level of agreement in detecting and identifying chimpanzees, although citizen scientists assigned fewer IDs overall. The resulting citizen scientist data could be used to construct a robust social network with a similar structure and network positions to that constructed from expert data coded from the same camera trap videos.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss the critical realism (CR) philosophical viewpoint and how it can be applied in qualitative research. CR is a relatively new and viable philosophical paradigm proposed as an alternative to the more predominant paradigms of positivism, interpretivism and pragmatism. This paper reviews the concept, its benefits and limitation. It goes further to provide an example of how CR is used as a philosophical and methodological framework with the systems thinking theory to applied qualitative research.Design/methodology/approachA study of project management challenges in a Nigerian government organisation is used to demonstrate a qualitative research approach, which includes a coding process and data analysis that is consistent with CR ontology and epistemology.FindingsCR focuses primarily on closed systems. However, a more accurate explanation of reality is obtained in addition to the identification of contextual causal mechanisms in the context of study when a general systems theory is applied.Research limitations/implicationsThe knowledge about the nature of relationships obtained in the context of study may not necessarily be replicated in another context. However, this paper elucidates a CR process that is generalisable by demonstrating how a theory is applied in a different context.Originality/valueThe paper demonstrates how systems theory is used to understand interactions in a CR paradigm. It engages with CR approach critically and illustrates a clear example of how CR can be applied in social research.

W.E.B. Du Bois was a pivotal scholar of the 20th century who had a sustained global impact on sociological, literary, and political knowledge. Although he produced groundbreaking sociological scholarship in a historically black school – Atlanta University, his work was marginalized and erased due to racism and the radicalness of his scholarship. This article demonstrates that Du Bois was a founder of scientific sociology in the United States who developed a pioneering and distinct Atlanta School of sociology. This article advances two theses: Du Bois developed an emancipatory school of sociology that theorized and empirically documented the causes of racial and social inequality and that the Atlanta School gave rise to pioneering scientific social research at historically Black colleges and universities that served as intellectual weapons in the struggle for racial equality.

Im Beitrag wird auf der Grundlage der Theorie struktureller praktischer Rationalität ein methodologischer Vorschlag zur interpretativen Rekonstruktion der moralischen Dimension menschlicher Handlungen, Überzeugungen und emotionaler Einstellungen zur Diskussion gestellt. Zunächst wird für die Ausgangsthese einer prinzipiellen normativen Imprägnierung menschlicher Handlungsund Lebensformen argumentiert. Im Anschluss daran werden weitere charakteristische Merkmale der Theorie struktureller Rationalität vorgestellt: der rational rekonstruierbare Bezug menschlichen Handelns, Denkens und Fühlens zu (guten) Gründen sowie das strukturelle Moment und die lebensweltlich verfasste Tiefendimension in der Begründung menschlicher Handlungsund Lebensformen. Den Abschluss des Beitrags bilden methodologische Überlegungen zu Optionen und Auswirkungen für die interpretative Sozialforschung.

Hazánkban, illetve világszerte az egészségszociológiai kutatások egyik alapvető témája a társadalmi egyenlőtlenségek, ezen belül is az egészségi állapotot érintő egyenlőtlenségek vizsgálata. A hangsúly főként arra tevődik, hogy ezek az egyenlőtlenségek mikor és milyen módon keletkeznek, és az életciklus során milyen módon maradnak fenn. A modern társadalomban ez a differenciálódás egyre inkább megmutatkozik az egészségi állapot egyes mutatóiban, mint pl. a szubjektív jóllét. Az egyenlőtlenségek mértékét olyan alapvető szociokulturális és szociodemográfiai változók határozzák meg, mint pl. a lakókörnyezet, a földrajzi elhelyezkedés, az életkor vagy a nem. A társadalom egészére vonatkozó kutatások egyik fontos jellemzője, hogy több szinten és több lehetséges aspektusból vizsgálják az adott jelenségeket. Tanulmányomban ezeket a megközelítési szinteket és aspektusokat vizsgálom, a vonatkozó teoretikus háttér alkalmazásával.

This paper takes Friedrich Engels 200th birthday on 28 November 2020 as occasion to ask: How relevant are Friedrich Engels’s works in the age of digital capitalism? It shows that Engels class-struggle oriented theory can and should inform 21st century social science and digital social research Based on a reading of Engels’s works, the article discusses how to think of scientific socialism as critical social science today, presents a critique of computational social science as digital positivism, engages with foundations of digital labour analysis, the analysis of the international division of digital labour, updates Engels’s Condition of the Working Class in England in the age of digital capitalism, analyses the role of trade unions and digital class struggles in digital age, analyses the social murder of workers in the COVID-19 crisis, engages with platform co-operatives, digital commons projects and public service Internet platforms are concrete digital utopias that point beyond digital capital(ism) Engels’s analysis is updated for critically analysing the digital conditions of the working class today, including the digital labour of hardware assemblers at Foxconn and Pegatron, the digital labour aristocracy of software engineers at Google, online freelance workers, platform workers at capitalist platform corporations such as Uber, Deliveroo, Fiverr, Upwork, or Freelancer, and the digital labour of Facebook users Engels’s 200th birthday reminds us of the class character of digital capitalism and that we need critical digital social science as a new form of scientific socialism © 2020, Unified Theory of Information Research Group All rights reserved

After 1945, both the Western Allies in Germany and some German social scientists embraced empirical public opinion research. This article examines the rhetoric, practices, and collaborative professional efforts of two of the most significant institutions conducting opinion research in West Germany in the 1950s: the Allensbach Institute and the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt. Although the political stances of these institutions differed, they were motivated to apply empirical research methods associated with Anglo-American social research to the West German population by shared concerns about the fragility of democracy, faith in the empirical sciences as an antidote to Nazi-era thought patterns, and the need to form a united front against doubters within West Germany. Even while declaring their desire to incorporate the latest empirical advances from the United States, however, they sought to articulate the meaning of their methods and findings in terms of the specific challenges faced by West Germany.

This article examines the development of empirical social research in Portugal over about a century and its relation to the early institutionalization of sociology at the tail end of that period. Relying on new empirical data, coupled with a critical reading of the main sources on the topic, it brings to light some epistemic invariants in a disparate body of research, acknowledging the initial persistence of Le Play-inspired as well as properly Le Playsian research methods. Furthermore, it identifies the general continuation of a substantial concern with the (physical and then moral) condition of rural and industrial workers, leading to a disclosure of the political-economic and governmental roots of the social research in question. From a historical sociology perspective, the article explores the relation between state governmentalization and authoritarian rule, on the one hand, and the development of the social sciences, on the other. From a history of science perspective, it acknowledges the continuous use of the same research methods to carry out seemingly incommensurable social research programmes and the later pursuit of a properly sociological research programme that fell back on conflicting methodological and theoretical approaches. In broader terms, the article aims to put forward a historical sociology of theoretical approaches, research methods, and scientific concepts that will hopefully contribute to a clearer understanding of their respective fields of application.

This article of the Zeitschrift für Psychodrama und Soziometrie aims to explore how Morenian sociodrama and its techniques represent valuable tools for participative research with social professionals and teachers working with children and their families in vulnerable situations. After introducing the Canon of Creativity by Moreno and its connection to art-based research, sociodrama is theoretically introduced and proposed as a research tool. This is followed by a description of an experience of participative research with a group of roughly 40 professionals within the national Italian programme P.I.P.P.I. The process of the session is described and discussed, in order to demonstrate how sociodrama can be an interesting tool for social research. The conclusion provides connections between practice and research, proposing the involvement of families in future activities, and highlighting possible future theoretical explorations in order to examine the topic in greater depth.
