Pierwszy to funkcjonowanie i prowadzenie jej przez kolejno sześciu typografów prywatnych: Jana Saxo, Jerzego Schönfelsa, Kacpera Weingärtnera, Piotra Freimutha, Piotra Schultza oraz Piotra Rosenbüchlera. Drugi okres to lata 1697 – 1773 kiedy oficyna zarządzana była przez Towarzystwo Jezusowe.W zbiorach Biblioteki Muzeum Warmii i Mazur w Olsztynie znajdują się 64 stare druki (w tym 68 tytułów) wydane przez ową typografię. Autorka poddała analizie 20 spośród nich. Przy opisie posłużono się kluczem chronologicznym. Wyboru dokonano dodatkowo ze względu na znaki proweniencyjne znajdujące się na woluminach. Wybrane przykłady starych druków odzwierciedlają charakter wydawniczy oficyny. Druki z kolekcji muzealnej są uzupełnieniem druków braniewskiej przechowywanych w innych bibliotekach m.in. w Bibliotece Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego Metropolii Warmińskiej „Hosianum” w Olsztynie i Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Uppsali.

Soil scientists have long believed that the first printed work of V.V. Dokuchaev was his diploma thesis in 1871 “On alluvial sediments along the Kasna River of the Sychevsky district of the Smolensk province”, which he defended after graduating from St. Petersburg University, under the guidance of Professor P.A. Puzyrevsky. However, there is a little-known article written under the pseudonym of V. D-chaev, “Darwin's theory before the court of Holy Scripture as the oldest historical botanical and zoological monument”, published in 1869 in the spiritual journal “Strannik” (“Wanderer”), which was written by V.V. Dokuchaev shortly after graduating from the theological seminary. The first work of V. Dokuchaev is of interest due to the fact that it appeared in the transition period from Dokuchaev-theologian to Dokuchaev-naturalist. Analyzing the article, written on 52 pages, one can understand how seriously the young man approached this publication. According to the former seminarian, the Holy Scriptures are the main and most reliable source of information about the past. In formulating his attitude to Darwin's theory, he relies on the work of M.A. Sibirtsev and spiritual father Matveevsky, finding in them arguments in support of his point. In addition, Dokuchaev mentions and cites the publications of more than two dozen geologists, mostly foreign ones. However, it should be noted that most of the works he refers to were popular sources. Objections to Darwin on the basic aspects of evolutionary theory show the spiritual maturity of the future scientist. The manuscript is still a student's article, but it contains the analysis of the problem of time, which later became the basis of Dokuchaev's teaching about time as a factor of soil formation. Dokuchaev came to understand the law of love as a universal law of the commonwealth that rules the world, which in fact is the basis of the ecological perception of the world.

The author made an attempt to analyse the origin of the book De humani corporis fabrica by Andreas Vesalius (Basel 1555) from the Library of the Theological Seminary of the Warmia Metropolis “Hosianum” in Olsztyn. In the course of research it was found that the volume belonged to Johann Zell (dates of life unknown) from Cologne and his son Heinrich Zell (1518-1564). Heinrich Zell was a librarian at the Prince Albrecht’s Castle Library in Konigsberg. The book was then transferred to the Castle Library. In 1827, the book was placed in Koniglicheund Universitatsbibliothek in Krolewiec. This library changed its name in 1918 to Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek Konigsberg. After World War II, the book was placed in the Library of the Seminary in Olsztyn. The copy is in good condition. It was bound in the bookbinding workshop of Kasper Angler in Krolewiec around 1560.

Since the Reformed faith has been characterized from its sixteenth century origins, thus for both Catholic and Protestant the century was an era characterized by faith speaking through the composition of their respective confessions of faith. This article begin to examine the problems raised by confessional subscription for Protestantism and its solutions. The various purposes for confessional subscription to the historic creeds of the Reformation and confessional subscription at Westminster Theological Seminary, and finally confessional subscription in the PCA and the OPC also discussed. This article argues that the abiding legacy of the Reformation's Confessional Orthodoxy manifested in the required vows of Westminster Seminary professors and NAPARC ministers. This reflection is on the teaching philosophy of James H. Cone (1938-2018). It connects Cone’s personal journey towards self-realization as a black theologian to his deeply held commitment to helping his students find and cultivate their own theological voice. The essay shares best practices from Cone’s methods within the classroom. It also describes his passion for teaching and love of his students. This is one of several short essays presented by recent students at a public forum at Union Theological Seminary after his death in 2018.

The history of American philosophy and religion from 1775 to 1850 largely centers around the reactions to Old Light Calvinism and the variations of it introduced by Hopkins and Emmons. During this period, Princeton Theological Seminary and Western Reserve College at Hudson, Ohio, remained the bastions of Calvinism. The actual orthodoxy of the day were the faculty at Princeton Seminary and Western Reserve College. The Oberlin philosophers are prime examples of thinkers united in a thorough critique of Calvinistic determinism, while at the same time vigorously disagreeing among themselves. The idea of human agency involved makes sense of “could have done otherwise” and so provides the framework for accountability. Mahan’s arguments that the determinist cannot make sense of accountability or God’s fairness are standard arguments and have carried great weight.

In 2016, the Block Museum, Northwestern University, was planning an exhibit “Paint the Eyes Softer” on portraits attached to mummies from Roman-era Egypt. These portraits are especially important because few other paintings have survived from the Greco-Roman tradition. Perhaps only 100 portraits remain attached to their mummies, serendipity provided an example amidst Northwestern’s campus, at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and this mummy became the exhibit’s centerpiece. The mummy required conservation, and Computed Tomography (CT) was used to investigate subsurface deterioration and to reveal details of the encased person and items within the wrappings. CT provides a 3D map of how absorbing each reconstructed volume element is but not the identity of the material(s) producing the contrast, and in situ position-resolved x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source identified different objects within the mummy. This talk covers the provenance of Hawara Portrait Mummy Four, what CT tells us about the person and object enclosed and what secrets x-ray diffraction reveals.

After Poland regained its independence in 1918, the Polish Roman Catholic Church needed to be reunited, so that thoroughly educated priests could be deployed to work in the newly established dioceses. The system of teaching had to be reorganized and this issue was fi­nally regulated by the 1925 Concordat which guaranteed the possi­bility of creating a seminary in each diocese. A special situation took place in Krakow, where in the 1920s, in addition to the existing dioc­esan seminary, the Częstochowa Seminary and the Silesian Seminary were located. The article outlines the circumstances in which the seats of these institutions were established outside home dioceses and draws attention to the cultural context of the events of that time, whose mate­rial reflection remains as the two modernist buildings preserved in the center of Krakow., Po odzyskaniu przez Polskę niepodległości w 1918 r. Artykuł nakreśla okoliczności powstania siedzib tych instytucji poza macierzystymi diecezjami oraz zwraca uwagę na kulturowy kontekst ówczesnych wydarzeń, których materialnym odbiciem są dziś dwa modernistyczne gmachy zachowa­ne w centrum Krakowa.

The article discusses one of the peculiarities of the Russian seminary versifying – the practice of borrowing from other poems. Based on the materials of printed editions and manuscripts of the Tver Theological Seminary, the author of the article shows that in the second half of the 18th century, when composing occasional poetry, seminarians regularly turned to borrowing from earlier school essays and gives examples of various borrowing methods. В статье рассматривается одна из особенностей русского семинарского стихотворства – практика заимствований из других стихотворений. На основе материалов печатных изданий и рукописей Тверской духовной семинарии (и дополнительно – Ярославской духовной семинарии) автор статьи показывает, что во второй половине XVIII века при сочинении окказиональной поэзии семинаристы регулярно обращались к заимствованию из более ранних школьных сочинений и приводит примеры различных методов заимствования.

In the concluding chapter of 100 Years of Happiness: Insights and Findings from the Experts, a book that considers what constitutes a happy life from perspectives of distinguished philosophers, economists, psychologists, and others who wrote on the nature of happiness over the course of the past century, pastoral theologians Donald Capps and Nathan Carlin (Carlin and Capps 2012) venture to offer their own reflections on the keys to a happy life. Don’s list initially features the biblically perfect number of seven keys to happiness. On further reflection, however, he finds himself drawn to adding two more, hinting perhaps that he is an especially happy person, for a grand total of nine, in his words, “Things That MakeMe Happy” (pp. 186–187). In this memorial essay, we draw on Don’s keys to happiness to frame a narrative of his life and his impact on countless other lives, including our own. Though Don would not have assumed that others’ lists of key factors for happiness would mirror in any way his own, he likely would hope that in considering his keys others might be inspired to articulate theirs. Over the past couple of decades, the media and popular culture have been increasingly interested in members of the LDS Church, its leadership, and its practices. With all of this recent interest, it is possible that a religious studies librarian at an institution of higher education or at a theological seminary could conceivably receive an occasional query regarding Mormonism, either out of popular culture curiosity or for academic investigation. This essay will review major sources in this growing field for any who wish to either assist patrons in comparative religion projects related to Mormonism, develop a working collection in Mormon studies, or both.

Almost everyone has heard of the deadly terror group Boko Haram, which began to gain world attention in 2009. Their impact on northeastern Nigeria has been devastating: lives lost and disrupted, properties destroyed, culture and history eradicated by violence. Though they no longer hold territory, in 2014-15 Boko Haram controlled an area the size of Belgium, and also carried out multiple violent attacks in surrounding areas. The Northeastern Nigeria Baptist Digital History Project was begun to help affected Baptist churches in three northeastern states which suffered invasion, many of them with devastated and scattered congregations and damaged or destroyed buildings, recover the dignity of their history through researching, locating, digitizing, and indexing historical documents related to their founding and growth. Original impetus for the project, headquartered in the Ibrahim Danin Library of Baptist Theological Seminary, Kaduna (located outside the Boko Haram sphere of influence) was the discovery of a trove of forty-year-old, handwritten working files created by missionaries present at the founding of many of the earliest Baptist churches in the area. Other primary materials already held by the Library contain clues to interpreting these records, and are also being digitized for access by scholars and researchers.

This research discusses the pastoral leadership of Jesus Christ as written in the Bible to be applied in the Pelita Dunia Theological Seminary. So that every graduate produced can understand and practice correct pastoral leadership in accordance with the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ. This study uses a qualitative approach that combines a literature review with the results of interviews with several alumni. Through this research, information was obtained that Jesus' pastoral leadership based on the explanations in the Gospels is clearly visible in three ways, as Jesus' pastoral leadership carries out God's vision and that means that every pastor also carries out God's vision, Jesus' pastoral leadership reaches out to the lost and improves relationships and that means every pastor also reaches out to the lost congregation and mends broken relationship with God, and pastoral leadership Jesus disciplines and sends and that means every pastor disciplines and sends the congregation to preach the gospel. In addition, this study also concluded that Pelita Dunia Theological Seminary should include and teach Pastoral Leadership to every student in order to produce graduates who can serve like Jesus.

Rostislav Visochan was born in 1984 in Novy Rozdol, in the Lviv region. He studied at Lviv Theological Seminary, the Ukrainian Catholic University, and the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and was ordained in 2012. As a military chaplain he worked with soldiers from various military units, including the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Ukrainian National Guard, the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service, volunteer battalions of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army and the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps. Visochan is the head of the Section for Chaplaincy in the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the Department of Military Chaplaincy of the Patriarchal Curia of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

It is no doubt that the spread of good news about the human’s savior Lord — Jesus Christ is the most important mission for all of the Christians in the World. However, the old model of planting another church from the mother one tends to be phased out. There is a need to set up a novel evangelism model for our Hong Kong local churches in the 21st century. At the same time, as the old pastors of local churches gradually retired, there is also a need to cultivate our next young and energetic church leadership. This author proposes that through the research of the model for Christian/non-Christian Israel visiting and the associated spiritual revival courses, new church leadership can be found and established. Indeed, the aim of these spiritual revival courses may lead some of the Christian Israel visitors willing to apply for the theological seminary and hence become future church leaders. Actually, this author also discovers that the novel evangelism model should program for the minority population groups in Hong Kong. Thus, there will be a request to extend the cultural and literature course (both in Taiwan Chinese and English) for our seminary colleges. Then these theological courses will become even complete for the preparation of the Hong Kong local churches’ role in the evangelism of after the pasted 20th century.

Jeff Grant is a convicted white-collar offender who abused his position as an attorney in New York. After his release from prison, he founded a white-collar community called Progressive Prison Ministries. One of the convicts who joined the community was Jacqueline Polverari who had committed mortgage fraud as described earlier in this book. The disbarred attorney Grant earned the master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, with a focus on Christian social ethics before he founded the community. Progressive Prison Ministries in Greenwich, Connecticut offer an online white-collar, non-violent support group. They hold their meetings on Monday evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm Eastern time, where white-collar offenders talk about life, forgiveness, coping with the consequences, and moving beyond the experience.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the worry among the lectures of Bethel Theological Seminaryconcerning Covid-19. The research is using mixed method, which is combination of both qualitativeand quantitative method. It employs both descriptive quantitative and phenomenological investigationapproaches. The results of quantitative method is triangulated with the qualitative results. The results showthat the lecturers of Bethel Theological Seminary do not worry about Covid-19. However, in the future,they may worry, especially if information concerning Covid-19 is spreading uncontrollably. Therefore, theresearcher suggest that the stakeholders filter the information regarding Covid-19, so that it may not raiseanxiety among those lecturers.

REV. PRZEMYSŁAW ARTEMIUK, PhD, Hab (b. 1974) is Assistant Professor of Fundamental Theology at the Faculty of Theology of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University of Warsaw, a Lecturer at the Major Theological Seminary in Lomza, and Secretary of the Association of Fundamental Theologians of Poland. He recently published the monograph The Renaissance of Apologia (2016) as well as a collection of journal articles entitled A Concise Catholic Alphabet (2018) and also edited the following volumes: Fundamental Theology to Protect Christian Identity (2017) and History – Faith – Science: The Sources of Knowledge About Jesus Christ (2018).

Based on the analysis of primary sources and historical-pedagogical literature, the article presents educators and theologians’ views on teaching Pedagogy and pedagogical disciplines in educational institutions of the Orthodox Church during the second half of the 1890s – 1918. These educators and theologians are Archimandrite Vissarion, I. Andreiev, D. Briantsev, A. Hrynevych, G. Maliarevskyi, M. Makkaveiskyi, P. Sokolov, N. Krasovskyi, A. Yurykas and others. It has been determined that theoretical ideas about the outlined problems were presented in publications in theological periodicals (such as “Theological Herald”, “Faith and Reason”, “Volyn Diocesan Information”, “People’s Education”, “Podillya Diocesan Information”, “Christian Reading”, “Church Herald”, “Chernihiv Diocesan Information” etc.). The article reveals the educators’ and religious leaders’ ideas about the tasks of pedagogical training, content, organizational aspects, forms and staffing for teaching Pedagogy and pedagogical disciplines in Orthodox theological academies, seminaries, women’s educational institutions of the Orthodox Church, church-teacher schools and second-degree schools. It has been determined that the scientists again paid attention to certain problems that were of scientific interest for educators and theologians in 1860-1870s.

This article presents editions of two massartu lists from the Eanna-temple in Uruk now housed in the Yale Babylonian Collection and in the Princeton Theological Seminary. Not only are NCBT 660 and PTS 2232 among the very few completely preserved examples of such lists, they also belong to the earliest known specimens of their genre, dating to the third (602/1 BCE) and first (604/3 BCE) year of Nebuchadnezzar II. These texts are valuable additions to the rather sparse dossier containing information on the Eanna cult during the formative phase of the Neo-Babylonian Empire; moreover, they are related to a text that concerns Nabonidus’s cultic reforms in the Eanna.

The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of the Christian values which associated with the mechanism of operational financing decision. This study uses an interpretative approach with post-positivism paradigm, and the design of this study is a single case study. The object of this study is Providensia Adonay theological seminary in Batu City. The data obtained through interviews and documentation. The result of this study revealed that the application of Christian values as the base for operational financing decision mechanism in the theological seminary would create a decision of operational financing form that not only managed honestly and independently but also reflect the faith and reflect the concern of others. For further research, it is expected to carry out research that integrates religious values with financial management. Such integration will contribute to the development of theory from both parties.

Jaan Jürjens was an Estonian of Russian Orthodox faith. He graduated from the Riga Orthodox Theological Seminary in 1888 and from St. Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy in 1902. From 1907 to 1910, he studied at the Department of Agriculture of Riga Polytechnic Institute. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he served the Russian Orthodox Church and fellow humans as churchwarden, elementary school teacher and professor of Orthodox Theological Seminary. Jaan Jürjens is an author of several published books and scientific papers.

With the increased interest in blended learning for higher education in Korea’s universities and EFL settings, there is a need to understand how students work within blended learning environments. The purpose of this study was to examine the interactional practices of EFL students in a blended EFL writing course in order to gain the understanding of interaction in terms of its usefulness and challenges. Data were collected from multiple sources such as surveys, observation notes, reflective journals and interviews, all of which were analyzed to extract salient themes. The emerged themes involving the usefulness of each interaction type (learner-instructor, learner-learner, learner-content) were prompt and personalized teacher feedback, group discussion, and lurking. Themes involving challenging were demands on posting, limitation of e-peer feedback and English-only policy. Further discussion of the themes is presented in relations to learning second language writing and suggestions for addressing the challenges are made. The main claim of the present article is that a Shia theological seminary, contrary to the common depiction presented, is a multivocal institution. The tradition of multivocality does not appertain only to ʿulamāʾ. Young clergy and seminaries also have very different ideas concerning religious thought. Evidence of this can be found in the present article in the form of examples of the dramatic discrepancy between ʿulamāʾ in essential theological beliefs, political theology, juridical methodology, issuing fatwas, and historical events relating to Shia identity. Moreover, the multivocality of young seminary students was empirically tested in Howzah ʿlmiyyah of Qom in Iran. The findings of this survey demonstrate the existence of four distinct schools of religious thought in the Shia seminary. At the end of the article, the educational, political and technological factors which have led to the formation of different intellectual trends within the contemporary Shia clergy institution are discussed.

The Florida Dunnam Campus of Asbury Theological Seminary underwent some major changes in the area of library services over the past few years. This presentation contains the ways in which these changes were influenced and accomplished through interdepartmental cooperation and collaboration. The redesign of the library space became a means by which we could provide a better academic community in a designated space with staff, resources, and comfortable seating.

Embodying moral imagination is an urgent task for leaders of our time. This chapter contends that theological field education is an essential, if not primary, locus for cultivating and embodying moral imagination in seminary students. Emerging from the author’s experience as an immigrant, Queer, Asian American woman theological educator, the metaphor of interpretation guides the pedagogical exploration of theological field education. This exploration further engages the concepts critically intersubjective (Courtney Goto) and interstitial integrity (Rita Nakashima Brock) in the pedagogical work of cultivating moral imagination. In particular, this chapter examines Union Theological Seminary’s Integrative and Field-Based Education program as a case study for the interpretive, critical intersubjective, and interstitial work in cultivating moral imagination.

Since the inception of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) in 1994, the issue of theological education has occupied a key place in the meetings of General Synod. This article analyses the development and implementation of URCSA’s ministerial formation programme over the past 25 years through the lens of the Belhar Confession. It examines the extent to which not only the curriculum but also the practices of ministerial formation have become driven, guided and shaped by the commitments inherent in the Confession of Belhar. Due to space constraints, this paper uses only Article One of Belhar as an interpretive and evaluative lens and focuses only on the Northern Theological Seminary in Pretoria, hoping thereby to stimulate further reflection in a similar vein.

Mainline Protestant theologians constructed new definitions of conscience in the 1960s and 1970s by appropriating Catholic sources. Protestant theologians, after previously seeing Catholics as suppressors of conscience, had come by the 1970s to acknowledge the Catholic Church's expertise on the theology of conscience. While the Second Vatican Council and the ecumenical movement provided a backdrop for the exchange of ideas on conscience, they were not the driving force behind the Protestant engagement with Catholic perspectives. Rather, theologians like C. Ellis Nelson (a Presbyterian who taught at New York's Union Theological Seminary) turned to Catholic sources after becoming intensely critical of Protestant teachings on the autonomy of conscience. Increasingly, Protestants dismissed their own conceptions of conscience as inadequate, prompting a search for new sources with which to develop a positive theology of conscience. Both groups found themselves studying psychology and psychoanalysis to apply their findings to conscience. Psychology proved a gateway to Catholic theology. Protestants found that the Catholic theology of conscience—particular its emphasis on formation—helped them to construct new understandings of conscience.

The aim of the present article is to define the relationship between the level of the sense of coherence and the ways of coping with stress at a higher theological seminary. In order to validate the presented hypotheses, two questionnaires were used: the Questionnaire of the Sense of Coherence (SOC-29) of Antonovski and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) of Endler and Parker. The research was conducted among a group of 43 seminarists and 43 university students. The analysis concentrated on the links between the sense of coherence and the ways of coping with stress. With respect to the sense of being understood, resourcefulness and a general feeling of sense, the results were significantly higher among the seminarists than among the students from the control group. A teeming metropolis greeted the Union Theological Seminary students who arrived in New York City in the late 1920s. Despite being in the midst of so much wealth and human progress, they found unemployed workers, makeshift bivouacs that housed the unemployed, and the despair that accompanied life on the political and economic margins of the great city. The students witnessed the great contradiction at the heart of capitalism—the existence of poverty and economic desperation in the very midst of so much wealth—and were radicalized. The attraction of radicalism was bolstered by an intellectual atmosphere fostered by Reinhold Niebuhr and the widespread acceptance that capitalism was facing imminent collapse, revolutionary upheaval.

The development and organization of the Revolutionary Policy Committee (RPC) owed much to the pressures of fascism and the economic crisis. Members included students radicalized at Union Theological Seminary. The RPC was a genuine effort to wrestle with the complexities of the 1930s. As such, it reveals much about the specific rationales used to justify a radical turn and indicates how Socialist Party tradition served as a break on violent activity—if not violent rhetoric. Education and work within the established labor movement characterized the RPC’s activities. Despite all of its claims to represent a revolutionary alternative, it did not stray far from the Socialist Party’s imperatives of education, work within the mainstream labor movement, and electoral action.

This article explores the long history of both industrial and theological education and ministerial formation that since the 1850s has included, inter alia: Healdtown and Lesseyton; Kamastone; D’urban (Peddie); Bollihope; Fort Hare and Rhodes Universities; the Federal Theological Seminary and John Wesley College; and Kilnerton, Pretoria. Taken together, the story of these places speaks of the Methodist Church’s long-standing commitment to invest in the education and formation of those who respond to God’s call to the ordained and other ministries (Seth Mokhitimi Methodist Seminary 2018). Compared with Healdtown and Kilnerton, Lesseyton institution is less well known and appreciated. Nevertheless, it played a significant role in South African education in the Eastern Cape and particularly in industrial training and education for ministry within the Methodist Church. This provides the focus for this article.

The genesis of this collection of essays lies in a series of scholarly meetings at Acadia Divinity College of Acadia University and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. There is a strong focus in the essays on the light that realia, the remains of material culture, can throw on biblical and extra-biblical texts. This is an important arena for interaction, not only because of the research yields that can result (as we see clearly in these essays), but also because this approach has the capacity to grip the imagination of students and the wider public in ways that a text-only modus operandi may not.

Reverend Dr. James Hal Cone has unquestionably been a key architect in defining Black liberation theology. Trained in the Western theological tradition at Garrett Theological Seminary, Cone became an expert on the theology of Twentieth-century Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth. Cone’s study of Barth led to his 1965 doctoral dissertation, “The Doctrine of Man in the Theology of Karl Barth,” where he critically examined Barth’s Epistle to the Romans and Church Dogmatics. His contemporaries and more recent African American theologians and religious scholars have questioned the extent to which Karl Barth’s ideas shaped Cone’s Black theology. The purpose of this brief commentary is to review the major ideas in “The Doctrine of Man” and Black Theology and Black Power, his first book, to explore which theological concepts Cone borrows from Barth, if any, and how Cone utilizes them within his articulation of a Black theological anthropology and Black liberation theology.

Both my father and my paternal grandfather were Methodist pastors. Daily Bible reading and prayer were as regular in our home as eating and sleeping. We lived frugally and shared what we had with those in need. I remember that my mother invited those who asked for food to come in and sit at table with us. Later, as a teenager, I helped my father deliver Thanksgiving baskets of food to poor families. But I confess that I never asked the question “What will they eat the other weeks and months of the year?” Ours was charity for the poor without questioning the systemic causes of poverty.
