The Old French epic poem La Prise d’Orange (late 12th-early 13th c.) systematically treats the conventional motifs, narrative patterns, characters and style of the chanson de geste with a comedic irreverence and an ironic distance that have led it to be labeled “the courtly parody of an epic,” but the text remains fundamentally organized by the generic paradigm from which it pointedly deviates. In Genettian terms, the Prise’s dominant hypertextual operation is travesty, which burlesques a prestigious text or story by recasting its characters and action in a ridiculously incongruous style—here, the narrative and rhetorical style associated with courtly discourse. The Prise cultivates a somewhat anxious enjoyment of its subversion of epic norms by thematizing the “folly” of its protagonist, Guillelme, whose absurd impersonation of a courtly lover casts doubt upon his legitimacy as an epic hero and the Prise’s “authenticity” as a chanson de geste. However, satirical transformation is ultimately reincorporated into the genre’s conservative narrative and ideological frameworks in a manner difficult to grasp through Genette’s system for lack of adequate distinctions between satire’s various possible ideological functions and stakes. La chanson de geste La Prise d’Orange (fin xiie-début xiiie s.) montre envers les motifs, les schémas narratifs, les personnages et le style conventionnels du genre une irrévérence soutenue, et garde vis-à-vis d’eux une distance ironique, qui lui ont mérité la réputation de « la parodie courtoise d’une épopée ». Le poème est pourtant foncièrement ordonnancé par le paradigme générique dont il s’efforce de s’écarter. En termes genettiens, le procédé hypertextuel qui prédomine dans la Prise est le travestissement, qui tourne en ridicule un texte ou un récit prestigieux en transposant son action et ses personnages dans un style plaisamment incongru—ici, le style rhétorique et narratif associé au discours courtois. La Prise suscite une appréciation quelque peu inquiète de sa subversion des normes épiques en thématisant la « folie » du protagoniste, Guillelme, dont l’imitation absurde d’un amant courtois jette un doute sur son statut de héros épique légitime et sur l’« authenticité » du texte en tant que chanson de geste. Mais la transformation satirique est enfin réincorporée dans les structures narratives et idéologiques conservatrices du genre d’une manière dont le système genettien ne peut que malaisément rendre compte, faute des distinctions nécessaires entre les divers fonctions et enjeux idéologiques possibles de la satire. La chanson de geste La Prise d’Orange (fine XII-inizio XIII secolo) mostra una sostenuta irriverenza e un’ironica distanza dai motivi convenzionali, dagli schemi narrativi, dai personaggi e dallo stile del genere, che le hanno fatto guadagnare la reputazione di « parodia cortese di un’epica ». Eppure il poema è fondamentalmente ordinato dal paradigma generico da cui si sforza di allontanarsi. In termini genettiani, il dispositivo ipertestuale predominante in La Prise è il travestimento, che ridicolizza un testo o una narrazione prestigiosa trasponendo la sua azione e i suoi personaggi in uno stile piacevolmente incongruo – qui, lo stile retorico e narrativo associato al discorso cortese. La Prise suscita un apprezzamento un po’ scomodo della sua sovversione delle norme epiche attraverso la tematizzazione della « follia » del protagonista, Guillelme, la cui assurda imitazione di un amante cortese mette in dubbio il suo status di legittimo eroe epico e l’« autenticità » del testo come chanson de geste. Ma la trasformazione satirica viene infine reincorporata nelle strutture narrative e ideologiche conservatrici del genere in un modo che il sistema genettiano può solo mal spiegare, mancando le necessarie distinzioni tra le varie funzioni possibili e le poste in gioco ideologiche della satira.

Le numérique offre de nouvelles approches créatives, capables d’enrichir l’analyse et la théorie littéraires. Michael Joyce, reconnu pour ses œuvres littéraires numériques construites sur le principe de l’hypertextualité, développe, dans son dernier roman Foucault, in Winter, in Linnaeus Garden, un roman épistolaire imprimé. Il imagine la correspondance qu’aurait écrite Michel Foucault lors de son épisode professionnel en Suède, en 1956. Or, ses expériences littéraires sur logiciels ont profondément inspiré l’écriture de ce roman et sa composition. Digital technology allows literary analysis and theory to develop new creative approches. Michael Joyce, better known for his works on electronic literature built on hypertextuality, developed an epistolary printed novel in his last book Foucault, in Winter, in Linnaeus Garden. He imagines letters that the French intellectual Michel Foucault would have written during a professional episode in Sweden. His literary experiments with software have deeply inspired the writing of this novel and how it is composed.

En Angleterre, Sherlock a connu un véritable succès lors de sa diffusion sur BBC One. La série est rapidement devenue le centre d'une attention massive, créative, en grande partie portée par les fans internautes. Par conséquent, Sherlock est un exemple intéressant de la coexistence de la vision traditionnelle de la télévision, de la culture participative et de la narration transmédiale. Prenant pour points de départ des exemples de Sherlock, l'article préconise l'importance de l'analyse textuelle du public de Sherlock impliquant stratégies et hypertextes institutionnels afin de comprendre comment une série de diffusion s'est transformée en un phénomène Internet qui s’insère dans la culture post-télévision. In its English context, Sherlock was a huge success when broadcast on BBC One. The series, however, soon also became the center of a massive, creative, mostly online-based fan attention. Consequently, Sherlock is an interesting example of the co-existence of traditional flow television viewing and transmedia, participatory produsage culture. Taking examples from Sherlock as points of departure, the article advocates the importance of textual analysis of Sherlock’s audience involving strategies and its institutional hypertexts in order to understand how a broadcast series turned into an Internet phenomenon. The article furthermore suggests that distinctions between active and passive as well as knowing and unknowing audiences are inert in the series and open it towards the collective intelligence of new kinds of audiences. Finally, the article illustrates how institutional as well as popular contributors shape the hyper textual, transmedia narration of the series within the twin fields of fact and fiction and thus understands Sherlock as an example of a broadcast television series crossing the threshold into post-television culture.

This article analyses Michel Houellebecq’s use of multimedia in order to reveal how he creates transmedial worlds that cross media thresholds. Through plurimedial combinations, expansive adaptations, and post-textual work, Houellebecq extends the realms of creative intervention. Through these three types of activity, Houellebecq troubles textual boundaries and the sacralised and mythologised notions of author and text. His transmedial undertaking addresses artistic marginalisation while encouraging new forms of creative production in a growing space of possibilities. Cet article présente une analyse des œuvres multimédiatiques de Michel Houellebecq afin de démontrer la création de mondes transmédiaux. À travers la création de combinaisons pluri-médiales, d’adaptations expansives et d’œuvres post-textuelles, Houellebecq vise l’extension du domaine des interventions créatives. Il déstabilise les seuils entre les médias et les conceptions sacralisées du texte et de l’écrivain. Houellebecq conteste la marginalisation artistique et encourage de nouvelles formes de production artistiques dans un espace de possibilités croissant.

While scholars generally use the concept of transfictionality to describe narrative crossover between separate works, this limitation does not apply in the eighteenth century, when publication in multiple installments and evolving ideas about the concept of copyright made created transfictional relationships within individual works. Comparative analysis of Prévost’s Mémoires d’un honnête homme and its continuation by Éléazar de Mauvillon shows that neither the text’s plural authorship nor the material separation of its parts suffice to determine the transfictionality of this textual ensemble. Rather, Mauvillon created a transfictional work by modifying the relationship between the narrative structure of Prévost’s text and its dispositive structure (books, volumes, installments). Bien que la transficionnalité soit un concept généralement employé pour rendre compte d’emprunts de matière fictionnelle entre œuvres indépendantes, cette limitation ne devrait pas s’appliquer au xviiie siècle, époque où la publication par parties séparées et l’évolution du privilège et du droit d’auteur rendaient possible l’existence de relations tranfictionnelles à l’intérieur même d’une seule œuvre. L’analyse comparative des Mémoires d’un honnête homme de l’abbé Prévost et de sa continuation par Éléazar de Mauvillon montre que ni la pluralité des auteurs ni la séparation matérielle des parties ne détermine la transfictionnalité de cet ensemble textuel. Plutôt, Mauvillon a créé une œuvre transfictionnelle en modifiant la relation entre la structure narrative du texte de Prévost et sa structure dispositive (livres, tomes, parties).

À travers deux exemples d’œuvres romanesques contemporaines à cheval sur deux médias, cet article vise à analyser les processus de remédiatisation et de transmédiatisation qui impliquent le développement narratif d’un récit à la fois dans un livre et dans un hypertexte. Il s’agit de chercher à comprendre comment on peut transposer la logique hypertextuelle en logique livresque, et comment on raconte des histoires sur ces deux dispositifs, comment une même histoire peut être développée d’un dispositif à l’autre. This article analyzes the remediation and transmediatisation phenomenons from two examples of recent novelistic works that develop their story on two different media: both book and hypertext. The investigation tries to understand how one can transpose hypertextual logic to bookish logic, and how one can tell stories using the two devices, how a single story can be conceived from one device to the other.

Cet article s’intéresse à la mini-série Lost in Austen, écrite pour la télévision sur un scénario de Guy Andrews, et réalisée par Dan Zeff en 2008, en quatre épisodes, à partir du célèbre roman de Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice. Loin d’être un simple divertissement caractérisé par l’absurde, cette série propose au contraire une réflexion sur l’élaboration d’une « fiction transfuge », pour reprendre le terme de Richard Saint-Gelais. L’auteur de Fictions transfuges, la transfictionnalité et ses enjeux nomme de cette façon les fictions s’élaborant à partir d’une histoire originelle mais capable d’affirmer une certaine autonomie, à l’exemple notamment des fan fictions. Lost in Austen semble s’inscrire dans un premier temps dans un vaste univers austenien fictionnel dérivé, où les histoires d’amour sont l’élément le plus important. Au fur et à mesure, cependant, la série construit son propre univers, certes toujours en rapport avec le roman originel, mais celle-ci devient une référence secondaire. This paper deals with the four-part 2008 British television series Lost in Austen, written from a Guy Andrews’s screenplay and directed by Dan Zeff, as an adaptation of the popular Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. Instead of being a simple recreation which would be characterized by nonsense, this series can rather suggest a reflection about how to create an “escapist fiction,” according to the Richard Saint-Gelais’s phrase (here translated). The author of Fictions transfuges, la transfictionnalité et ses enjeux thus labels the fictions created from a first fiction but with enough autonomy, like, for example, the fanfictions. Indeed, Lost in Austen seems first included in a large Austenian fictional world, where the love stories are the most important. But, as the series goes on, it develops its own world, always with the original novel’s stamp but this reference gradually becomes secondary.

Dispositif de maximisation de la visibilité médiatique permettant à une même fiction d’être présente sur différents supports, le media mix a évolué au cours des trois dernières décennies en déplaçant le livre qui était à l’origine source des adaptations à la périphérie du circuit transmédiatique. Les récits produits ne sont pas liés par une simple hiérarchie entre une source et ses dérivés mais forment des univers diégétiques parallèles divergents où le livre est à la fois central et accessoire. Interpolations transfictionnelles, variantes contrefictionnelles et continuation métaleptique lient les différents formats (papier, audiovisuel, vidéoludique) où se développe successivement la fiction narrative. L’analyse de la licence Dragon Ball (1984-2016), exemplaire par sa longévité, la variété des déclinaisons transmédiatiques et son succès populaire, permet d’illustrer l’évolution de l’écosystème médiatique japonais et d’éclairer le fonctionnement d’autres univers fictifs (Naruto, One Piece). Over the last three decades it has evolved by moving the book from the center to the periphery of the transmedia circuit. The stories are not linked by a hierarchy between a source and its derivatives. They form a network in which each narration interacts with the others: transfictional interpolations, conterfictional variants and metaleptic continuation bind different formats (paper, audiovisual, video game). In these diegetic universes which are divergent and parallel, books are both central (origin of the fictional world) and accessory (adaptation of anime, novelization). By its longevity, variety of transmedia variations and its popular success, the Dragon Ball license (1984-2016) illustrates the evolution of the Japanese media ecosystem and its analysis could contribute to understand how others fictional universes operate (Naruto, One Piece).

L’histoire de l’adaptation de la fiction populaire française montre comment la montée en puissance du journal, du roman-feuilleton et de formats apparentés a reconfiguré la phase d’hégémonie du mélodrame. C’est désormais la fiction imprimée qui devient le noyau, et le théâtre le satellite : cette culture médiatique redéfinit ses pratiques culturelles en termes de loisirs et de marché, réinterprète la pratique ancienne de la narration, l’adapte à ses nouveaux moyens de diffusion. The history of the adaptations based on French popular fiction reveals how the rising power of newspapers, serialized novels, and related formats all contributed to reconfigure the hegemonic phase of the melodrama. Printed fiction gradually became the nucleus of popular cultural production and theatre merely its satellite. In this period, the media culture redefined its own cultural pratices in terms of entertainment and the market, and the ancient art of narration was itself adapted to fit the new means of diffusion.

The paper discusses the way Peter Ackroyd reflects about style, fiction and reality through the notion of imitation. He purposely entitled his novel Chatterton after the eponymous writer who was famous for pastiching medieval style. L’article revient sur la réflexion menée par Peter Ackroyd sur les notions de style, de fiction et de réalité à travers le prisme de l’imitation ; il a choisi de le faire dans un roman intitulé Chatterton, dont le héros éponyme fut célèbre pour ses pastiches du style médiéval.

Le film choral, empruntant l’une des branches du film à protagonistes multiples, fait cohabiter plusieurs histoires qui s’entrecroisent. Cet article situe cette forme narrative et effectue des rapprochements avec des genres limitrophes, tout en précisant quelles sont les différences. Le succès du film choral serait possiblement dû au compromis intéressant qu’il propose au spectateur, qui ne s’égare plus dans les dédales d’une fiction hypertextuelle ou d’une expérience interactive. Après une exploration de la théorie de l’hypertexte de fiction, la discussion se poursuit sur les possibilités interactives au sein d’un film choral. The hyperlink movie (or network narratives), part of the multi-protagonists movies, showcases several intertwined storylines. This article analyzes the genre and draws comparisons and distinctions to neighboring genres. The success of the hyperlink movie is possibly due to the visual depiction of interwoven narratives that allow the viewer to more easily comprehend the story ; as opposed to the way complex narratives are presented in hypertext fiction or interactive experiences. After exploring the theory of hypertext, the discussion moves to the interactive possibilities of the hyperlink films.

Le projet netwars, consacré à l’univers de la cybercriminalité, est composé de cinq éléments porteurs : un documentaire TV, un web-documentaire, une application de récit interactif (roman graphique), une série de romans (audio, papier et e-book). netwars est un univers transmédia tel que défini par Henry Jenkins (2006), c’est-à-dire qu’il se déploie sur de multiples médias et chacun apporte une contribution significative à l’ensemble. netwars forme un univers trouble entre réalité et fiction dans lequel le spectateur se construit son propre récit et sa propre expérience en naviguant à son gré d’un média à un autre. Cette ambiguïté qui, comme nous le verrons, est génératrice de paranoïa, se voit thématisée, esthétisée et structurellement créée par le dispositif transmédia propre à netwars. Dans ce projet, la paranoïa ne provient pas tant du sujet en lui-même que du dispositif fictionnel qui mêle faits et éléments non référentiels ainsi que de la structure transmédia, dans sa dimension immersive et totalisante. Avec netwars tout est processus de hacking : le documentaire est hacké par la fiction, comme le spectateur par le dispositif transmédia. The netwars project, dedicated to the world of cyber crime, is composed of five medias: a TV documentary, a web documentary, an interactive story app (Graphic Novel) and a series of novels (audio, paper and ebook). The netwars project is a transmedia universe as defined by Henry Jenkins (2006): it is spread over multiple media and each makes a significant contribution to the whole. netwars forms a blurred universe between reality and fiction in which the viewer builds his own story and experience navigating from one medium to another. This ambiguity, which, as we shall see, is generating paranoia, is aestheticized and structurally created by the transmedia quality of netwars. In this project, paranoia stands not so much in the subject itself than in the fictional device that mixes facts and non-referential elements, as well as in the transmedia structure in its immersive and totalizing dimension. With netwars everything is about hacking: fiction hacks the documentary just like the transmedia hacks the viewer.

La résurgence implique un enfouissement préalable au surgissement. Elle semble être liée à la disparition et à l’occultation par une relation de causalité temporelle. Mais par-delà la tension entre la résurgence et l’enfouissement qu’elle suppose, un dialogue et un questionnement s’instaurent dans The Book of Dave : A Revelation of the Recent Past and the Distant Future. Mettant en scène l’acception première du terme, le roman présente un surgissement apocalyptique des eaux lié à une temporalité complexe. Mais ce texte janusien prouve également que la résurgence d’un texte ne peut opérer qu’à demi-mot, l’interprétation se faisant parcellaire dans un roman qui, pourtant, promet la révélation. En effet, le texte que Dave, le protagoniste, enfouit sera retrouvé dans l’avenir et interprété dans un monde dont les signifiés ont disparu laissant derrière eux de cryptiques signifiants. Cette résurgence du sens fait écho à celle de l’hypertextualité : la trace et le palimpseste deviennent des modalités de la résurgence qui bruit à la surface du texte à travers l’effacement. Resurgence is a term which implies that a stream courses beneath the surface before it issues from the ground. This concept seems to be linked to the notion of disappearance by a relation of temporal causality. But in The Book of Dave : A Revelation of the Recent Past and the Distant Future a questioning and a dialogue appear beyond the tension between a movement of resurgence and that of coming to the surface. The novel stages the first acceptation of the term when the use of an apocalyptic tidal wave ties in with a complex handling of the temporal dimension. This Janusian novel proves that the resurgence of a text can only occur in veiled terms, thus making interpretation fragmented and incomplete when the novel promises a revelation. Indeed, the text that Dave buried will be found again in the future and interpreted in a world where signifieds have disappear, leaving behind a trail of cryptic signifiers. The reappearance of meaning echoes that of hypertextuality : traces and the palimpsest become modalities of a resurgence that rustles at the surface of the text through its own erasure.

In the present paper we shall focus on literary translation, on the question ofthe translation of “complex” or “secondary” texts, but with the intention of makinga contribution to the problem of translating non-literary, “simple,” “primary” textsas well. In other words, we shall examine the problem of text translation from asemiotic perspective. In fact, this study founds translation theory in sign theorydeveloping a semiotic-linguistic approach to the problem of translation in thedirection of so-called interpretation semiotics which also implies the semiotics ofsignificance. Translation concerns both simple and complex texts, which correspondrespectively to Mikhail Bakhtin’s primary and secondary texts. Simple texts concernnon literary discourse genres whilst complex texts the literary genres, where theformer are better understood in the light of the latter, and not vice versa. Thispaper also focuses on the concept of the literary text as a hypertext maintainingthat the hypertext is a methodics for translative practice. The relation between thetext and language understood as a modeling device is also important for anadequate theory of translation and sheds light on the question of translatability.Another central issue in this study is the relation between translation andintertextuality., Le présent article s’intéresse à la traduction littéraire et à la traduction destextes complexes ou secondaires, et se penche également sur les problèmes liés à latraduction des textes non littéraires, simples, ou primaires. Nous aborderons donccette problématique sous un angle sémiotique. Cette étude, en plus de révélerl’importance de la théorie de la traduction dans la théorie du signe, développe uneapproche sémiotique et linguistique au problème de traduction en matièred’interprétation sémiotique, laquelle comprend la sémiotique de la signifiance. Latraduction s’intéresse aux textes simples et complexes, lesquels correspondentrespectivement aux textes primaires et secondaires proposés par Mikhaïl Bakhtine.Les textes simples concernent le genre non littéraire, tandis que les textescomplexes sont associés au genre littéraire, qui comporte plus de difficultés que legenre précédent. Par ailleurs, cet article étudie le concept du texte littéraire entant qu’hypertexte et soutient que ce dernier est une méthode pour la pratiquetraduisante. La relation entre le texte etla langue, comprise en tant qu’agent demodélisation, est importante pour forger une théorie adéquate de la traduction.Cette relation nous éclaire également quant à la question de la traduisibilité. Larelation entre la traduction et l’intertextualité est une autre problématiquecruciale dont traite le présent article.
