Big Data has received great attention in academic literature and industry papers. Most of the experiments and studies focused on publishing results of big data technologies development, machine learning algorithms, and data analytics. To the best of our knowledge, there is not yet any comprehensive empirical study in the academic literature on big data technology acceptance. The statistical results of this model provide a compelling explanation of the relationships among the antecedent variables and the dependent variables. The analysis of the structural model reveals that the hypothesis tests are significant for 8 out of 12 path relationships.

In this article the elements of institutional environment development and strategies for solving the problem of stable functioning of social and economic sphere of life of society are considered, discussed and analyzed. The relevance of the study is an attempt to highlight the main indicators of modernization of the institutional environment of Ukraine. These indicators are: global index of the effectiveness of public administration, the index of incapacity of states, the index of global competitiveness, the index of economic freedom, the index of easiness of doing business, the index of acceptance of corruption. All these indicators are included in the process of formation of the institutional environment of Ukraine. The research is based on the methods of the empirical research:, observation, comparison, and, in addition, on the methods of content analysis. Results. The institutional environment provides the basis for the activity for the subjects of the socioeconomic system and also defines the vector of its development. The Global Competitiveness Index not only assesses the degree of competitiveness of a country, but also helps to see the real situation in the country. It shows its competitive advantages and problems that slow down economic development. The Index of Economic Freedom identifies the main problems of an optimal level of economic freedom. It shows that the higher the index of economic freedom leads to the higher level of welfare of the population. The Easiness of Doing Business Index assesses the «rules of the game». In other words, laws, regulations, and other government acts that have impact on reducing unprofitable and bankrupt businesses. This index, in addition, assesses the condition for facilitating for doing business in Ukraine. The Failed States Index helps to analyze Ukraine's ability to control the integrity of its territory, political, demographic, economic and social situation in the country The Corruption Perceptions Index is usually used in political and econometric studies to explain the effectiveness of government administration, economic development and the level of democracy in Ukraine. Moreover, it is used to reduce the corruption in government-business relations. The institutional environment in Ukraine continuously forming. This is why the analysis of some elements of the development of the institutional environment in Ukraine is necessary to identify the optimal strategy for solving the problem of stable functioning of social and economic sphere of life of society

It is a common view among philosophers of science that theoretical virtues (also known as epistemic or cognitive values), such as simplicity and consistency, play an important role in scientific practice. In this paper, I set out to study the role that theoretical virtues play in scientific practice empirically. I apply the methods of data science, such as text mining and corpus analysis, to study large corpora of scientific texts in order to uncover patterns of usage. These patterns of usage, in turn, might shed some light on the role that theoretical virtues play in scientific practice. Overall, the results of this empirical study suggest that scientists invoke theoretical virtues explicitly, albeit rather infrequently, when they talk about models (less than 30%), theories (less than 20%), and hypotheses (less than 15%) in their published works. To the extent that they are mentioned in scientific publications, the results of this study suggest that accuracy, consistency, and simplicity are the theoretical virtues that scientists invoke more frequently than the other theoretical virtues tested in this study. Interestingly, however, depending on whether they talk about hypotheses, theories, or models, scientists may invoke one of those theoretical virtues more than the others.

Since 2020, the world is facing a huge pandemic crisis caused by an acute respiratory coronavirus syndrome. Beyond the impact on the population's health or on normal social interaction, the virus led to a huge economic slowdown, requiring the prompt EMU's authority's reaction. The current paper explores how the sovereign yield spreads of EMU countries with respect to German bonds were affected during the pandemic period. To this end, I employ dynamic panel methods, the Pooled Mean Group estimator of Pesaran et al. (1999) and the Dynamic Common Correlated Effects estimator of Chudik and Pesaran (2015), which accounts for heterogeneous effects across countries and the non-stationarity of spreads and of their determinants. The model uncertainty is studied with a Bayesian VAR (BVAR) approach. The results reveal that, in addition to fundamentals (economic growth, large public debt, inflation, financial instability, country's competitiveness and domestic investment), pandemic risk puts also substantial upward pressure on sovereign bond yields both, in the long-run and short-run on the selected period. Pandemic risk seems to raise yield spreads in the 14 EMU countries in the short-run, while disease mitigation measures reduce them in the long-run. Same negative effect of disease mitigation measures on yield spreads are also found with BVAR model. Results are relatively robust across different empirical methods and considered scenarios.

BackgroundDecision-making in initiating life-sustaining health technology is complex and often conducted at time-critical junctures in clinical care. Many of these decisions have profound, often irreversible, consequences for the child and family, as well as potential benefits for functioning, health and quality of life. Yet little is known about what influences these decisions. A systematic review of reasoning identified the range of reasons clinicians give in the literature when initiating technology dependence in a child, and as a result helps determine the range of influences on these decisions.MethodsMedline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Web of Science, ASSIA and Global Health Library databases were searched to identify all reasons given for the initiation of technology dependence in a child. Each reason was coded as a broad and narrow reason type, and whether it supported or rejected technology dependence.Results53 relevant papers were retained from 1604 publications, containing 116 broad reason types and 383 narrow reason types. These were grouped into broad thematic categories: clinical factors, quality of life factors, moral imperatives and duty and personal values; and whether they supported, rejected or described the initiation of technology dependence. The majority were conceptual or discussion papers, less than a third were empirical studies. Most discussed neonates and focused on end-of-life care.ConclusionsThere is a lack of empirical studies on this topic, scant knowledge about the experience of older children and their families in particular; and little written on choices made outside ‘end-of-life’ care. This review provides a sound basis for empirical research into the important influences on a child’s potential technology dependence.

Abstract. Marketers are increasingly relying on covert advertising tactics to persuade consumers. This empirical study selected the context of an emerging market to examine the effectiveness of product placements. Using an experimental design, we captured the affective and behavioral responses of young Indian adults. The results indicated that young adults are positive about product placements. The mediating role of brand attitude change in the relationship between attitude toward product placements and purchase intentions is established. The study provides valuable insights into the impact of execution factors on viewers’ responses. Implications and directions for future research are discussed based on the results of this study.

We report on a large-scale empirical study investigating the relevance of socio-technical congruence over key basic software quality metrics, namely, bugs and churn. In particular, we explore whether alignment or misalignment of social communication structures and technical dependencies in large software projects influences software quality. To this end, we have defined a quantitative and operational notion of socio-technical congruence, which we call socio-technical motif congruence (STMC). STMC is a measure of the degree to which developers working on the same file or on two related files, need to communicate. As socio-technical congruence is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon, the interpretability of the results is one of our main concerns, so we have employed a careful mixed-methods statistical analysis. In particular, we provide analyses with similar techniques as employed by seminal work in the field to ensure comparability of our results with the existing body of work. The major result of our study, based on an analysis of 25 large open-source projects, is that STMC is not related to project quality measures -- software bugs and churn -- in any temporal scenario. That is, we find no statistical relationship between the alignment of developer tasks and developer communications on the one hand, and project outcomes on the other hand. This study explores the evaluation of (im)politeness, which is made by a hearer (or a beneficiary). Although discursive researchers advocate the importance of the evaluation of (im)politeness made by a hearer in politeness research, empirical studies on the evaluation of (im)politeness are still limited. The non-linguistic aspect has not been much researched in previous politeness studies. This study tries to fill these gaps in politeness research, by focusing on evaluation of (im)politeness from the non-linguistic perspective. Among many other things, the evaluation of attentiveness (demonstrator’s preemptive response to a beneficiary’s verbal/non-verbal cues or situations surrounding a beneficiary and a demonstrator, which takes the form of offering) is focused on in this study, making cross-cultural (Japanese and American) and cross-generational (university students and their parents’ age groups) comparisons. The data were collected through a questionnaire, which consisted of six situations, and interviews. 298 people (Japanese university students, Japanese parents and American university students) served as the participants. The results of the questionnaire data show that there were significant differences among the participants in the evaluation of attentiveness in two situations, those of the interview data revealing that most participants evaluated attentiveness positively, except in two situations. This study contributes to further understanding of (im)politeness from the perspective of attentiveness with cross-cultural and cross-generational differences as well as similarities.

For means of communication, persuasion is a natural and critical part of conveying a message. Data visualizations, being means of communication themselves, are used as rhetorical instruments, but how they persuade has yet to be fully understood. Based on George Campbell’s rhetorical theory, this paper presents the results of an empirical study testing the effectiveness of appeals to emotion through proximity techniques – the contextual framing of a visualization. The findings indicate that people feel greater interest towards a topic when the visualized data are more relevant to them, and that data representing events closer in time are more affecting.

As a software system evolves, its architecture tends to decay, leading to the occurrence of architectural elements that become resistant to maintenance or prone to defects. To address this problem, engineers can significantly benefit from determining which architectural elements will decay before that decay actually occurs. Forecasting decay allows engineers to take steps to prevent decay, such as focusing maintenance resources on the architectural elements most likely to decay. To that end, we construct novel models that predict the quality of an architectural element by utilizing multiple architectural views (both structural and semantic) and architectural metrics as features for prediction. We conduct an empirical study using our prediction models on 38 versions of five systems. Our findings show that we can predict low architectural quality, i.e., architectural decay, with high performanceeven for cases of decay that suddenly occur in an architectural module. We further report the factors that best predict architectural quality.

Stack Overflow hosts millions of solutions that aim to solve developers' programming issues. Stack Overflow becomes a code hosting website where developers actively share its code. However, code snippets on Stack Overflow may contain security vulnerabilities, and if shared carelessly, such snippets can introduce security problems in software systems. In this paper, we empirically study the prevalence of the Common Weakness Enumeration -- CWE, in code snippets of C/C++ related answers. We explore the characteristics of Codew, i.e., code snippets that have CWE instances, in terms of the types of weaknesses, the evolution of Codew, and who contributed such code snippets. We find that: 1) 36% (i.e., 32 out of 89) CWE types occurred in Codew on Stack Overflow. Particularly, CWE-119, i.e., improper restriction of operations within the bounds of a memory buffer, is common in both answer code snippets and real-world software systems. Furthermore, the proportion of Codew, doubled from 2008 to 2018 after normalizing by the total number of C/C++ snippets in each year. 2) In general, code revisions are associated with a reduction in the number of code weaknesses. However, the majority of Codew had weaknesses introduced in the first version of the code, and these Codew were never revised since then. Only 7.5% of users who contributed C/C++ code snippets posted or edited code with weaknesses. Users contributed fewer code with CWE weakness when they were more active -- either revised more code snippets or had a higher reputation. We also find that some users tended to have the same CWE type repeatedly in their various code snippets. Our empirical study provides insights to users who share code snippets on Stack Overflow so that they are aware of the potential security issues. To understand the community feedback about improving code weaknesses by answer revisions, we also conduct a pilot user study and 62.5% of our suggested revisions are adopted by the community. Stack Overflow can perform CWE scanning for all the code that is hosted on its platform. Further research is needed to improve the quality of the crowdsourced knowledge on Stack Overflow.

The primary objective of this article is to detail how two teachers in the same school site, in the American Southeast, taught war to the children of soldiers. Taken from an extensive qualitative case study involving eight teachers, this article examines the pedagogies engaged in by two teachers who expressed a desire to teach war more critically to their students. Critically here means but is not exclusive to raising student consciousness to issues of war not typically taught including investigating how power, race, gender, and sex operate in war, more closely examining decisions evaluating them for their justness or unjustness. In short a more authentic exploration of war. One teacher engaged a pedagogy of tension the other a pedagogy of facts. Both resulted in a less than critical examination of war. A pedagogy of tension reflected this teacher's reaction to pressure from the community and fear of surfacing or inflicting trauma upon students. A pedagogy of facts reflected the second teachers’ beliefs that focusing teaching on facts will allow her to teach a more critical rendition of war. A qualitative empirical study, data was collected through interview and classroom observation.

Karunanayaka and Tang (2017) introduced a class of compromise designs for estimating main effects under the baseline parameterization. Their approach is to add some runs to the basic one-factor-at-a-time design, and its implementation requires computer search except for the case of adding one run where a theoretical result is available. The reliance on computer search only allowed them to find the limited results from adding up to four runs to the basic one-factor-at-a-time design. In this paper, we provide a systematic construction of compromise designs, without computer search and without restriction on the run size and the number of factors. Closed-form expressions of the bias and efficiency criteria are obtained for the new designs. Both theoretical and empirical studies show that our designs outperform those of Karunanayaka and Tang (2017) saving small-sized problems.

An increasing number of firms engage in grassroots innovation, i.e., the voluntary generation and development of innovations by any member of an organization, regardless of function or seniority. However, no empirical study to date identifies the determinants of success or failure of grassroots innovation initiatives. We execute a survey study among 3,728 managers in 14 countries, 2,353 of which (63.1%) had already engaged in grassroots innovation. We find that, on average, firms that adopt grassroots innovation outperform firms that do not. We also find that firms that enable (1) employee autonomy, (2) competence development, and (3) relatedness (i.e., helping employees establish mutually beneficial relationships with trusted colleagues) in their grassroots innovation initiatives outperform firms that do not. We document that such effects are contingent on a firm’s institutional environment (i.e., leadership style and market orientation). For instance, the lower the market orientation and the higher the hierarchical leadership of the firm, the higher the performance returns the firm obtains from fostering autonomy and relatedness in grassroots innovation. These findings encourage managers and firms to adopt (or persist in their) grassroots innovation initiatives, to infuse them with sufficient autonomy, competence, and relatedness and match them with the right leadership style.

Gravity variables such as distance, adjacency, colony, free trade agreements or language are used to capture the effects of trade costs in empirical studies. By using actual data on trade costs, this paper decomposes the overall effects of such variables on trade into those through three gravity channels: duties/tariffs (DC), transportation-costs (TC), and dyadic-preferences (PC). When PC is ignored as is typical in existing studies in the literature, it is shown that nearly all gravity effects are due to distance, 29 percent through DC and 71 percent through TC. The tables turn as the additional channel of PC is introduced and shown to dominate other channels, with adjacency contributing about 45 percent, distance about 32 percent, colony about 14 percent, free trade agreements about 7 percent, and language about 2 percent. It is implied that gravity variables mainly capture the effects of demand shifters rather than supply shifters (as implied by the existing literature). The results are further connected to several existing discussions in the literature, such as welfare gains from trade and the distance puzzle.

Do crackdowns by destination countries deter refugees? Much of the existing literature conflates containment measures (forcibly restricting refugees in their home region or country) and deterrence policies (discouraging refugees by making the destination appear less attractive). In addition, empirical studies have focused almost exclusively on Western countries and analyzed the effects of acceptance rates or policy reforms on the number of asylum applications lodged. In contrast, this paper examines whether rights violations deter asylees and refugees by leveraging a global dataset drawn from reports by the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. I find that deportation, detention, and encampment do not decrease asylum applications or refugee arrivals, and may actually raise them in some cases. While reduced access to the labor market may deter very small numbers of asylees and refugees, there are other sound reasons for destination countries to eschew restrictive employment policies.

Responding to disasters triggered by natural hazards is a deeply political process, but it is usually presented by practitioners as an apolitical endeavour. This is striking when disasters occur in authoritarian and politically highly polarised conflict-affected settings. Although the literature provides leads as to why and how humanitarians depoliticise aid, there has been little empirical research on the implications of depoliticisation, especially at the community level. Based on qualitative fieldwork that focused on the drought responses that overlapped with the 2016-19 sociopolitical crises in Zimbabwe, this paper details the practices, motivations, and implications of humanitarian depoliticisation. It differentiates between strategic, coerced, and routine managerial depoliticisation, and argues that, in an authoritarian conflict-affected setting, depoliticisation strategically allows state and non-state actors to defuse sensitive issues and actor relations and to remain safe. PurposeUniversity business incubators (UBIs) are born as tools of the academic world to market research results, for the transfer of technology and to promote entrepreneurial spirit. In these contexts, the exchange of knowledge among entrepreneurs can be a key variable for the development and success of their businesses. This paper aims to analyse the characteristics of entrepreneurs' resources and the institutional logic that prevails in the incubator as determinants of the exchange of knowledge, and the authors examine the results in terms of entrepreneurial commitment and the generation of innovations.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical study carried out on a sample of 101 entrepreneurs in UBIs in Spain and The Netherlands.FindingsThe results reveals how complementarity, supplementarity and transferability of resources, as well as incubator predisposition towards business are fundamental for the exchange of knowledge, the development of entrepreneurial spirit and the generation of innovation.Originality/valueThis study makes a contribution towards an understanding of how relationships between university entrepreneurs provide access to and help create useful knowledge for the parties, with this resource constituting one possible source of sustainable competitive advantage.

This paper offers an alternative approach for engaging sociologically, ontologically, and politically with digital farming platforms. A challenge faced by any approach looking to upend intellectual conventions, especially ontological ones, lies in the question of representation, namely, how do we talk about digitization in novel theoretical ways using language rooted in more than two millennia of western human-centered thought? One way to deal with this challenge, the one adopted in this paper, involves decentering familiar terms and repurposing them. Thus, rather than organizing the argument around familiar terms like small and big data, I argue instead that we organize data-assemblages according to what they do, which makes this a political ontological project. To do this, I offer the relational predicate of weak data and strong data, suggesting that they are good to think with in this regard. The argument ultimately lands at a place for analyzing these platforms that offers the potential for critique and perhaps even a degree of optimism, as I suggest a framework for normatively evaluating these practices. The paper draws upon various empirical studies of digital agriculture conducted by the author, which include interviews with farmers, farm laborers, hacktivists, investors, and engineers from numerous countries and locales.

Temporal distance (TD) is a type of psychological distance which shows how an individual construes past and future. It is not explored with empirical research as to how an individual's focus on temporal distance (near-past, far-past, near-future and far-future) can be measured from human-written text and further used for studying human tendencies. Traditionally, focus on a Temporal Distance is studied by self-report measurements. In this article, we present a study on human focus on a temporal distance from their Twitter posts (English tweets). We first identify the tweet-level temporal focus by deep neural classifiers which make use of linguistic knowledge for classification. The model classifies each tweet into one of near-past, far-past, near-future or far-future. Classified tweets are then grouped by users to obtain the user-level temporal focus. Finally, we correlate the user's focus on temporal distance (near-past, far-past, near-future, and far-future) with his/her demographic (age, gender, education, and relationship status) and psychological attributes (intelligence, optimism, joy, sadness, disgust, anger, surprise, and fear). Our empirical analysis reveals that users' near-past focus is more positively correlated to their age. We also observe that users' near-future focus is correlated to joy while users' focus on far-past is associated with negative emotions like sadness, disgust, anger, and fear.

This paper contains a regression analysis of a database that merges the data of the Chinese Customs Database with the Chinese Industrial Enterprise Database. Empirical testing verifies, from the perspective of independent innovation, the impact of intermediate imports on export sophistication. The findings include three parts. First, intermediate imports contribute significantly and positively to manufacturing technological innovation, although the promotive role differs significantly with enterprise ownership, trade type, country of export destination and technological strengths. Second, although independent innovation has a direct promotive impact on export sophistication, it restrains the positive promotive role of intermediate imports on export sophistication, i.e., there is a negative moderation effect. Third, intermediate imports has a stronger promotive impact on enterprises at the nascence and growth stages, while independent innovation has a stronger promotive impact on enterprises at the growth and maturity stages.

Children with medical complexity have ongoing health needs that may require dependence on medical technologies. While hospital admissions are an important focus of care delivery for these children, a majority of the time they are cared for in their own homes. Parents' report feeling overwhelmed and stressed by the scope of their responsibilities, but they become sophisticated care providers and assume greater authority when providing their children's care at home. Communication, decision-making, and dealing with conflict with members of health care teams have been central concerns in parents' reports of their home health care experiences. The objective is to review literature on relational aspects of parent and home health care provider care practices for children with medical complexity receiving home health care services. A narrative review was conducted. A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBM Reviews, PsychINFO, ERIC, and CINAHL databases for English language studies published since database inception was carried out. Eligible studies focused on relational aspects of parent and home health care provider care practices for children with medical complexity receiving home health care services. Nine empirical studies were selected for this review. Literature describes parents' and providers' experiences managing a child with medical complexity in the home and the effects for the family and the parent-health care provider relationship. Parents want to be actively involved in all aspects of care that affects their child and ultimately their family. Further investigation is needed to better understand relational aspects of parent-home health care provider care practices to support child/family health and well-being in the home setting.

A very important function of an issue tracking system is to assign labels to issue reports, such as bug, feature, enhancement, etc., in order to categorize issues to facilitate various development activities. In practice, it is very common that an issue has multiple labels. However, current works are mainly based on single-label prediction, which are not suitable for just-in-time multi-labeling services, due to the low efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, we propose MULA, a just-in-time MUlti-LAbeling system, which learns and automatically assigns multiple labels to issue reports. We have built a dataset with 81,601 entries and 11 labels, as the first benchmark for this task, and implemented a GitHub app. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work and tool for online multi-labeling GitHub issues based on their categories. We conduct a comprehensive empirical study, including comparisons with five commonly adopted labeling models that show the superiority of MULA, as well as an evaluation that shows high consistency between MULA’s suggestions and developers’ opinions.

To effectively design digital games and gamified systems, it is important to better understand the psychological and behavioral processes players use to reach goals. Although numerous prior studies have examined individuals’ adoption, use, and continued use of digital games, few attempts have been made to understand how people desire and strive to achieve goals. The objective in this study was to develop and test a model of individuals’ achievement of goals in digital gaming. Drawing upon theories of goal-directed behavior, we proposed a conceptual model describing goal setting, goal striving, goal attainment, and feedback evaluations in the context of mobile gaming. To empirically test the proposed model, we collected two sets of (cross-sectional and longitudinal) data from 407 users of Pokemon GO. The results generally indicated that goal-directed effort plays an important role in translating goal desire into goal attainment. In addition, we found prior game points and goal desire have interaction effects on goal-directed effort and subsequent acquisition of game points. Finally, this study shows that action strategies such as in-game payment and deliberate planning have differential effects on goal-directed effort and satisfying experiences. Overall, our findings provide empirical support for the efficacy of our goal-oriented model as a theoretical tool for explaining the process of goal striving to obtain game points. Our findings not only have important implications for digital gaming but also contribute to emerging research on gamified systems.

How does sentiment in a pitch affect an entrepreneur’s fundraising outcomes? Although research suggests that negativity in entrepreneurial “pitches” to investors adversely impacts resource acquisition, there is a lack of empirical research showing whether, and to what extent, this is true. We study over 30,000 entrepreneurial loan requests from one of the largest loan marketplaces to understand how the sentiment in text-only pitches to investors affects fundraising. In contrast to prior literature, we find that negatively-worded pitches are funded faster than positively-worded ones. We also find that negatively-worded pitches result in lower interest rates to entrepreneurs. Finally, we find that negatively-worded loans default less, suggesting that the benefits of negativity are not one-sided but two-sided: negativity helps both resource seekers and resource providers. Collectively, the results from our study reveal how negativity can be beneficial in impression management and offer fresh insights for the psychological foundations of entrepreneurship.

This article examines to what extent ideological incongruence (i.e., mismatch between policy positions of voters and parties) increases the entry of new parties in national parliamentary elections and their individual-level electoral support. Current empirical research on party entry and new party support either neglects the role of party–voter incongruence, or it only examines its effect on the entry and support of specific new parties or party families. This article fills this lacuna. Based on spatial theory, we hypothesise that parties are more likely to enter when ideological incongruence between voters and parties is higher (Study 1) and that voters are more likely to vote for new parties if these stand closer to them than established parties (Study 2). Together our two studies span 17 countries between 1996 and 2016. Time-series analyses support both hypotheses. This has important implications for spatial models of elections and empirical research on party entry and new party support.

The principles of "interpersonal complementarity" posit that one person's behavior tends to evoke reactions from others that are similar with regard to affiliation, but dissimilar with regard to status (Carson, 1969). Empirical support for these assumptions has been mixed, especially with regard to the status dimension. The present study investigated influences of level of observation (behaviors vs. traits), personality, and instructional set on complementarity. Previously unacquainted participants (N = 182) were randomly assigned to dyads who engaged in videotaped discussions with either a cooperative or a competitive framing. Their behaviors were rated every 10 s in terms of affiliation and status. We used a multilevel modeling approach that enables powerful omnibus tests of core tenets of interpersonal theory, including previously overlooked influences of person and situation, as well as time-lags. Interpersonal complementarity was found for both affiliation and status. It was highest for simultaneous behaviors, (i.e., occurring within the same 10-s interval), but for status we also found lagged effects being anticomplementary. Complementarity was also moderately predicted by some personality traits. The situational context predicted the mean levels of interpersonal behaviors but not complementarity. Concerning consequences of complementarity, the participants' individual complementarity coefficients predicted their being liked by the interaction partner, observer judgments of their social competence, and their overall discussion performance. Contribution: Based on a previous exploratory study, this research further investigated learning mode contributions from simulations and live competitive activities compared to a traditional classroom, laboratory, and testing approach to instruction in order to assess the applied behavioral contributions of each. Background: Cybersecurity capabilities in organizations lag behind the threats; consequently, there is a renewed emphasis on cybersecurity education. However, education appears to lack its full potential in most settings. Few empirical studies have systematically tested the efficacy of various training methods and modes, and those that have been conducted have yielded inconsistent findings. Recent literature on the use of gamified simulations have suggested that they may improve cybersecurity behaviors. Similarly, live activities, such as hackathons and capture the flag events, have been surmised to augment learning and capabilities. This study sought to systematically investigate this question. Research Questions: 1) Do cybersecurity simulations improve applied learning performance; 2) do live competitive activities improve applied learning performance; and 3) do any or each of these modes amplify applied learning performance when used in combination? Methodology: This study randomly assigned computer science students to one of four sections using different modalities. It used pretest scores on an applied exam as the co-variate, with post-test scores as the dependent variable. Results: Simulations improved learning performance over traditional classroom/lab instruction alone whereas live competitive activities did not. However, the greatest learning outcomes achieved was structured cybersecurity simulated environments combined with live competitive activities.

Many mobile apps of social Internet of Things (sIOT) systems can help us record and share daily events, such as health and sport events. In fact, healthy diet recognition is an important and challenging problem in dish health assessment. Via the collection and monitoring of data pertaining to our daily diet, we can work in collaborative ways to achieve dish image annotation based on sIOT systems to enhance deep features. To this end, this article proposes a deep feature and attention mechanism-based method for dish health assessment, which aims to apply a hand-deep local-global net (HDLGN) for dish image recognition. Then, food taste is used as health guidance for people who want to lose weight or follow doctors' advice. First, the local attention mechanism is introduced to identify key areas of the dish image. Second, ingredient and handcrafted color features are extracted to learn deep features. Subsequently, we combine local and global attention mechanisms to return the dish taste as the recognition result. Finally, experiments show that our proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of taste recognition.

Confusion in previous studies over how and when cognitive diversity results in higher or lower performance has led to an examination of the influence of a range of moderator variables. Our study provides new theoretical insights into this field of research by extending the categorization–elaboration model (CEM) through an examination of the interaction effects of multiple convergent demographic diversities on information elaboration, team processes and creativity. Based on comparative fit and an in-group projection model of social categorization theory, the moderating influence of demographic faultlines and subgroup imbalance are also investigated. Using hierarchical regression analysis (HRA), empirical support from 453 team members nested within 91 teams across five organizations was found for the mediating role of team information elaboration on the relationship between cognitive diversity and team creativity. Furthermore, both demographic faultlines and subgroup balance were found to moderate the relationship between cognitive diversity and team information elaboration. Our study provides additional clarity concerning processes underlying the positive effects of cognitive diversity on team performance.

Auditing is a collective process conducted by a professional accounting team with a wide range of skills and experience. Audit work is labor-intensive, and audit team diversity, particularly gender diversity, is considered to have both auditing and economic effects. However, there is scant empirical research on the way that audit engagements are conducted and the role of audit team leaders (ATLs), specifically female ATLs, in the audit effort, because they and other audit team members mainly develop audit strategies in practice during the planification period. A hand-collected private data set was gathered from Spanish small and medium-sized audit firms from 2001 to 2015. After controlling for endogeneity, the analysis shows a more efficient audit effort by female ATLs and their audit teams when task complexity increases. Furthermore, the findings show a masculinization process by female ATLs when their experience rises, which may be interpreted as intrinsic motivation for future promotions. Additional analyses also reveal differences in female ATLs’ behavior when there are shorter audit firm tenures and larger audit firm sizes. Overall, our empirical evidence is in line with the idea that gender diversity is positive for audit efficiency. Our study responds to calls from regulators to consider audit team attributes as a relevant factor in the quality of audit quality practices.

Although mandatory audit partner rotation has become prevalent worldwide, prior empirical research seldom considers how the successor partners are identified and the economic consequences of different rotation strategies. We examine the importance of internal networks to the selection of successor partners and the underlying incentives in the selection process in China, which affords an opportune testing ground for analyzing our research questions. We find that candidate partners who are familiar with the incumbents—evident in prior teamwork experience—are more likely to be selected as successors. This phenomenon is more pronounced when the audit engagement is more complex, client-specific knowledge is not readily available to the succeeding partner, and the engagement is more attractive to the audit firm. These results are consistent with auditors’ incentive to facilitate information transfer and maintain client satisfaction after the transition. Reinforcing this interpretation, we find that successor–incumbent familiarity is associated with better post-rotation audit-reporting quality and less frequent client defections without undermining the quality of the audited financial statements. Enriching our understanding of the production of audit services in audit firms, our analysis contributes to the public policy discourse on partner rotation.

As the Chinese economy enters the stage of new normal, high-quality economic development has become the current priority. Economic development should not be achieved at the cost of environment and resources. Clarifying the interactive relationship between water environment pollution and the quality of economic growth can help realize water environment protection and sustainable economic development. Based on the data of 30 provinces and cities in China, this paper studies the bidirectional mechanism between water environmental pollution and the quality of economic growth with the dynamic simultaneous equations model. The paper concludes that environmental pollution and the quality of regional economy growth have strong hysteretic nature; And that water environmental pollution and the development of regional economy display the relationship of bidirectional feedback. Discharge of pollutants into the water environment can inhibit high-quality development of regional economy. As the intensity of water environmental pollution increases by 1%, the quality of regional economic growth decreases by 0.0230%; Hence as the quality of regional economic growth increases by 1%, the intensity of water environmental pollution increases by 0.148%. Therefore, sustainable economic development should be attached with due significance, by removing the factors of environmental pollution, timely adjusting environmental policies, and promoting harmony between ecological environment and economic growth.

Discrimination has a negative impact on minority group members’ wellbeing, particularly immigrants. Yet, empirical research investigating coping mechanisms against perceived discrimination among immigrants remains scarce. The present study examined the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and eudaimonic (psychological and social) wellbeing among immigrants by assessing the role of intergroup (downward and upward) and intrapersonal (temporal) comparisons as coping mechanisms in this association. Using a representative sample comprising five foreign-born immigrant groups (N = 1250) in Spain, we found that immigrants tend to engage in more favorable downward and upward intergroup comparisons in response to perceived discrimination, but lower temporal intrapersonal comparisons. Downward intergroup comparison was related to lower psychological wellbeing and upward intergroup comparison was associated with higher psychological wellbeing. Temporal intrapersonal comparison was predominately predictive of psychological and social wellbeing. We further discuss specific indirect effects and the important roles of intergroup and intrapersonal comparisons for immigrants’ wellbeing.

This article empirically examines the effect of big data analytics (BDA) on healthcare supply chain (HSC) innovation, supply chain responsiveness, and supply chain resilience under the moderating effect of innovation leadership in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The scanning interpretation–action–performance model and organization information processing theory are used to explain BDA, HSC innovation, responsiveness, and resilience relationships. First, the hypotheses were tested using data collected from 190 experienced respondents working in the healthcare industry. Our structural equation modeling analysis using the partial least squares (PLS) method revealed that BDA capabilities play a pivotal role in building a responsive HSC and improving innovation, which has contributed to resilience during the current pandemic situation. High innovation leadership strengthens the effect of BDA capabilities on HSC innovation. High innovation leadership also increases the effect of BDA capabilities on responsiveness. Second, we validated and supplemented the empirical research findings using inputs collected in 30 semistructured qualitative questionnaires. Our article makes a unique contribution from the perspective of innovation leaderships. In particular, we argue that the role of innovative leadership in the COVID-19 pandemic situation is critical as it indirectly affects HSC resilience when BDA is in place.

This article provides an introduction to discussions and empirical studies of the decentered state. The first section traces the historical origins of the concept of the decentered state. Group theory and interorganizational theory drew attention to the role of diverse actors in policymaking. The study of policy networks explored these actors and their relationships. The concept of the hollow state arose to describe a state made up of proliferating networks. Finally, postfoundationalists amended these earlier ideas by insisting that the state should not be reified. There are, then, at least three different versions of the decentered state—the pluralist state, the hollow state, and the stateless state. The second section shows how the postfoundationalism of decentered theory transforms the earlier debates about network governance and pluralist democracy. The final section suggests that decentered theory privileges empirical studies of the stateless state and in particular of narratives, rationalities, and resistance.

(1) Problem Definition: In recent years, manufacturing firms in developing economies have made significant efforts to move up the production value chain by adopting foreign technology through licensing. However, there is negligible empirical evidence of the relationship between technology licensing and productivity growth in developing economy manufacturing firms (licensee firms), the focal relationship of interest in this study. We examine whether and how the relationship between technology licensing and productivity growth in the short run is affected by the challenges and constraints inherent in the contexts developing economy firms operate in. We do so by investigating the moderating role of formal workforce training program in a firm, and the corruption level and the infrastructural constraint level in the firm’s external environment. (2) Academic/Practical Relevance: Although the adoption of foreign technology by developing economy manufacturing firms is often driven by the goal to strengthen their capabilities in the long run, prior research provides a limited understanding of the performance consequences of technology licensing in the short run, which is an important business reality. Our study serves to address an important gap in research and practice by shedding light on some of the unique challenges and constraints that licensee firms in developing economies face as a consequence of foreign technology licensing. (3) Methodology: The empirical analyses are conducted using matching and fixed-effects regression on a multi-industry data set from the World Bank comprising detailed firm-level information from over 16,000 manufacturing firms across 25 developing economies in South Asia and East Asia. To strengthen the causal inference of the results and rule out alternative explanations, we use several alternative matching techniques and empirical methods addressing selection bias and unobserved heterogeneity. (4) Results: Our results indicate that the adoption of foreign technology by developing economy manufacturing firms has a substantial short-run disruptive effect on firm operations with productivity growth declining by 4.5 percentage points in these firms relative to comparable firms that do not use foreign technology licensing. Toward mitigating such disruptive effects, we find that formal workforce training programs attenuate the negative relationship between technology licensing and productivity growth. However, infrastructural constraints in the external business environment amplify this negative relationship. Intriguingly, our results suggest that corruption in the firm’s external environment acts as an “efficient grease,” attenuating the negative impact of technology licensing on productivity growth. (5) Managerial Implications: Our results provide compelling evidence on not only the presence of but also the large magnitude of the disruptive effects of technology licensing on productivity growth. The findings offer important insights for manufacturing firms and policymakers in developing economies on how to mitigate these negative effects. The results highlight opportunities for policymakers to (a) encourage firms to have formal workforce training programs, (b) reduce infrastructural constraints in the business environment, and (c) institute regulatory practices that can substitute for the effects of corruption.

Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Patient-centred care has been recognised as vital for today's healthcare quality. This type of care puts patients at the centre, contributing to positive patient outcomes such as patient autonomy. Empirical research comparing nurses' and patients' perceptions of the support and provision of patient-centred care is limited and focuses solely on nurses and patients working and staying on surgical wards. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Comparing patients' and nurses' perceptions of patient-centred care on different types of hospital wards, and exploring if patient empowerment, health literacy, and certain sociodemographic and context-related variables are associated with these perceptions. DESIGN: Cross-sectional design. METHODS: Data were collected in ten Flemish (February-June 2016) and two Dutch (December 2014-May 2015) hospitals using the Individualised Care Scale (ICS). A linear mixed model was fitted. Data from 845 patients and 569 nurses were analysed. As the ICS was used to measure the concept of patient-centred care, it is described using the term 'individualised care.' RESULTS: Nurses perceived that they supported and provided individualised care more compared with patients as they scored significantly higher on the ICS compared with patients. Patients with higher empowerment scores, higher health literacy, a degree lower than bachelor, a longer hospital stay, and patients who were employed and who were admitted to Dutch hospitals scored significantly higher on some of the ICS subscales/subsections. Nurses who were older and more experienced and those working in Dutch hospitals, regional hospitals and maternity wards scored significantly higher on some of the ICS subscales/subsections. CONCLUSION: Nurses perceived that they supported and provided individualised care more compared with patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Creating a shared understanding towards the support and provision of individualised care should be a priority as this could generate more effective nursing care that takes into account the individuality of the patient.

Many empirical studies suggest that the realized values of highest-ranked decision alternatives tend to be systematically lower than estimated, causing the decision-maker to experience post-decision disappointment. This systematic overestimation of value has been explained by a systematic bias in the alternatives’ estimated values resulting from, e.g., a behavioural disposition towards overoptimism or even strategic misrepresentation. Nevertheless, even if these estimates are unbiased, the value of the selected alternative is likely to be overestimated due to selection bias. In this paper, we build models for measuring the shares of systematic and selection biases in generating post-decision disappointment, and develop approaches for estimating these models from data which contains the estimated values of all alternatives but the realized values of selected alternatives only. Results obtained from applying these models to real data on 5,610 transportation infrastructure projects suggest that out of the total cost overrun of $2.77 billion, only ca. 24% can be attributed to systematic bias.

Acknowledging the lack of empirical research on the adoption of AI in B2B marketing and the research gap in studying power from a network perspective, this paper explores how the drivers of AI adoption as marketing solutions affect network actors' power dynamics. Using data collected through 20 semi-structured interviews with business managers and engineers involved in AI adoption for B2B marketing activities, as well as academic experts in the field of AI, this paper discusses how AI adoption priorities and motives shape the power dynamics amongst the various network actors, including focal firms, AI suppliers and tech giant companies. The findings show that, in the context of AI adoption in B2B, both technology and expertise are key sources of power, and that data creates and perpetuates power negotiations and renegotiations in the network. We envisage this process as the movements on a busy dancefloor where groups of actors are engaged in what we refer to as the Power Tango. This paper contributes to the power dependence theory by showing that, through the adoption process, network actors' power is exchanged, exercised, counter-balanced and perpetuated, creating fluid network dynamics.

In order to provide adaptive and user-friendly solutions to robotic manipulation, it is important that the agent can learn to accomplish tasks even if they are only provided with very sparse instruction signals. To address the issues reinforcement learning algorithms face when task rewards are sparse, this paper proposes an intrinsic motivation approach that can be easily integrated into any standard reinforcement learning algorithm and can allow robotic manipulators to learn useful manipulation skills with only sparse extrinsic rewards. Through integrating and balancing empowerment and curiosity, this approach shows superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art intrinsic exploration approaches during extensive empirical testing. Qualitative analysis also shows that when combined with diversity-driven intrinsic motivations, this approach can help manipulators learn a set of diverse skills which could potentially be applied to other more complicated manipulation tasks and accelerate their learning process., Comment: Accepted at RSS 2021

Looking at computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) in terms of (a) collaborative knowledge building, (b) group and individual perspectives, (c) mediation by artifacts and (d) micro-analysis of conversation provides a rich, multi-dimensional starting point for conceptualizing and studying a specific variant of CSCL. These four contributions to CSCL are inter-related. The notion of collaborative knowledge building defines a useful paradigm for conceptualizing learning as social practice. The social interactions and knowledge management activities in which shared knowledge is constructed can be analyzed as the result of interweaving group and personal conversational perspectives. In general, collaborative interaction is mediated by artifacts: sometimes only by transitory artifacts like spoken words or gestures, but increasingly by physical or digital artifacts and media. Empirical studies of collaborative knowledge building employing micro-ethnographic analysis of speech, gesture, artifacts and media can make the details of these collaboration interactions visible, highlighting the interplay of perspectives and artifacts in the trans-personal construction of knowledge. A theoretical framework incorporating models of knowledge building, perspectives and artifacts -- and grounded in empirical analysis of collaborative interaction -- can guide the design of computer-based artifacts and media as support for collaborative learning with appropriate, elaborated and unified conceptualizations.

This study proposes a dynamic model for identifying the optimal amount of tourism taxes at the different stages of a destination’s lifecycle. Based on the Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans model of economic growth, we reformulate the Cobb-Douglas function to incorporate new variables to estimate the optimal level of tax that could maximize the total output of the tourism industry while maintaining below the critical point of the destination’s carrying capacity. We illustrate the model with an empirical study using time series data collected from 31 administrative regions in mainland China from 2000 to 2016. The results suggest that the proposed model has satisfactory goodness of fit, and the estimated tax amount was congruent with the trends of tourism development at the destinations. The study offers practical implications for destination policymakers.

This Special Issue on “Polymedia in interaction” theorizes and empirically investigates practices and ideologies of digitally mediated interaction under conditions of polymedia. We argue that the proliferation of mobile interpersonal communication in the 2010s calls for, and is reflected in, conceptual and methodological shifts in empirical research on digital language and communication in pragmatics and sociocultural linguistics. In this introduction, these shifts are crystallized in five interrelated themes: (1) a turn from ‘computer-mediated communication’ to ‘digitally mediated interaction’ as a bracket category; (2) a move beyond the on/offline divide and focus on the integration of mediated interaction in everyday communication in micro-units of social structure (e.g. transnational families, business or academic communication); (3) an empirical downscaling towards private and small-scale public data; (4) a shift from the study of single modes of digital communication to polymedia; and (5) a focus on semiotic repertoires and registers of digital mediation. Research that orients to (some or all of) these focal points is compared with other trends in digital language research, including computational methods. The papers in this issue flesh out these five dimensions with findings from qualitative research, based on multi-sited linguistic and digital ethnographies in various sociolinguistic settings.

One of the fundamental challenges for sociology is the interpretation of its key terms, which is determined by the fact that many words of everyday language and scientific discourse are the same despite implying a much higher level of generalization as sociological categories. Certainly, such challenges are more typical for the empirical research - when sociologists turn their theoretical concepts into sets of empirical indicators which have to be clear enough for the respondent to understand and answer the questionnaire and for the sociologist to interpret these answers correctly. Nevertheless, the lack of generally recognized conceptual definitions is no less important, because the general picture of social reality is necessarily made of them (the society is described as either fair, consisting of trustworthy institutions that provide opportunities for being happy, or in the opposite statements). The article presents a possible reconstruction of the strategy that sociologists use in the search for conceptual definitions for such complex concepts with varying connotations as love, happiness, trust and justice. This strategy consists of two steps: focus on the macro-sociological dimension of the phenomena under study as determining its various manifestations and everyday interpretations (the key step in the study of love and happiness); and identification of objective and subjective indicators of the phenomenon under study (the key step in the study of trust and justice). For instance, in the study of love and happiness, there is the obvious micro-sociological perspective that implies personal responsibility for being happy and loved, and the hidden macro-sociological perspective that implies social standards for identifying and achieving love and happiness; trust is defined as a source of social order, cooperation, institutional, organizational and everyday interactions, which reduces the level of uncertainty; in the searches for the conceptual definition of justice, there are two main approaches - the first approach considers justice as one of many grounds for developing some theoretical model; the second approach reconstructs justice either as an ideal political-philosophical model of social order or as a means of the comparative analysis of its practical implementations.

Modern megalopolis concentrates all groups of resources including economic, political, cultural, information, human resources, etc. The high population density, economic and geographic situation, complex multiethnic and multicultural structure of large cities contribute to certain types of values and behavioral models in the younger generation. The neo-institutional approach and social capital theory were chosen as a methodological basis. The article examines a number of methodological works devoted to various aspects of the social capital and explores the opportunity for this concept application for analysis of the protest behavior motivation and assessment of the protest potential of young people. Combination of the economic model of multilevel analysis for measuring social capital by S.А. Sysoev and socio-political parameters for the empirical part allowed to clearly defining the main categories and indicators of analysis. Measuring the levels of social capital of a megalopolis with the inclusion a network component expands the range of opportunities for assessing and identifying the protest potential of large Russian cities residents.

O projeto político-pedagógico é um documento de gestão escolar, obrigatório para as escolas públicas, estabelecido na legislação federal brasileira. O objetivo da pesquisa realizada foi desvelar a ideologia e a utopia subjacentes aos projetos político-pedagógicos. A pesquisa empírica de metodologia mista foi realizada em dois períodos: 2010-2012 e 2018-2019, e empregou, como método quantitativo, o método indutivo, e na base qualitativa, a Hermenêutica de Profundidade. O método indutivo forneceu os critérios de coorte na coleta dos dados e a Hermenêutica de Profundidade propiciou o desvelamento da ideologia e da utopia ocultos nos conteúdos dos projetos político-pedagógicos. A análise qualitativa, por intermédio da Hermenêutica de Profundidade, recorreu aos conceitos de ideologia e de utopia na perspectiva mannheimiana. A análise conseguiu identificar quatro componentes ideológicos e um componente utópico.

PurposeThis study aims to explore how corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions (i.e. economic; legal; ethical; philanthropic) foster employee creativity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, an attempt is made to investigate the mediating role of affective commitment to explain the above linkage.Design/methodology/approachThe survey data were collected from 167 employees in the emerging market of Saudi Arabia. The data was analysed using PLS-SEM for frequency, reliability, confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation modelling.FindingsThe CSR dimensions, particularly the ethical and philanthropic dimensions, showed both direct and indirect effects on the creativity behaviour of employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, affective commitment mediated the relationship between the legal, ethical and philanthropic CSR dimensions and creativity behaviour.Originality/valueThis study enriches previous CSR empirical research and adds to current literature focused on the determinants of CSR dimensions' effectiveness; particularly, the research is set in a challenging scenario characterized by the pandemic. So, this paper extends previous studies by investigating under which key conditions CSR dimensions are most effective, in particular in two main directions. First, it contributes to the CSR literature by determining how various CSR dimensions influence creativity behaviour during a pandemic. Pandemics are events that occur regularly, and the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, offers the opportunity to explore its effects on employees' behaviours in the current context. Second, the study's mediation findings contribute to new empirical evidence which suggests that affective commitment has a positive effect on the CSR dimensions of employee creativity behaviour during a pandemic in an emerging market.
