Strategy-as-practice (SAP) has become one of the most vibrant areas of contemporary strategy research in the past two decades. As the field has grown significantly, we have witnessed an emergence of distinct streams of research within the SAP research community. Thus, it is time to take stock of this body of work to better understand the structure of the field and provide a refreshed agenda for future research. Our review is based on bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of 340 articles. As a result, we identify the following six clusters of research: praxis, sensemaking, discourse, sociomateriality, institutional and process. Co-citation analysis shows significant disconnects between some of these clusters. Building on our review, we identify various ‘crossing strategies’ for connecting across four disconnects: (i) micro and macro; (ii) sociomaterial and discourse; (iii) critical and more mainstream; and (iv) practice and process perspectives. By harnessing diversity, these crossing strategies suggest rich agendas for future SAP research, ranging from digitalization to gender inequality.

This article reflects upon the experiences of two perinatal, hospital social workers during the unprecedented time of the Covid-19 in Ireland, as discussed with their academic colleague. This encounter revealed the complexity of service delivery that emerged, when managing the needs of vulnerable clients whilst being mindful of personal safety. One of the social workers was pregnant so was conscious of possible risks to her unborn child, as well as her young family at home. The second social worker, her line manager, discusses the dilemmas associated with the management of risk when allocating staff to contexts where they would be in direct contact with Covid-19. At the core of the analysis of these situations is the notion of liminal space and the realisation that time appears to have a new meaning; what we once knew as normal no longer exists, but we have yet to reach the ‘new normal’.

Practice has developed into a key concept in management research, including B2B marketing and purchasing studies. However, the adoption of the term in B2B marketing and purchasing is characterized by some difficulties. Research on B2B practices is growing, but seems marked by fragmentation, inconsistency, and lack of precision among others. Without conceptual consistency and integrity, B2B practice studies are at risk of becoming derailed, compromising the developments of future theory and practice within B2B. In this critical review paper, we therefore seek to create an overview of B2B practice research as perceived through a practice lens. Based on a review of 116 identified practice papers from key B2B journals, we map the topic areas where the practice concept has been applied for investigations, and we also investigate how well the applied practice conceptualization in these papers align with a recognized practice theory conceptualization. We find that the majority of B2B studies align poorly with the three elements of practice: managerial action, habitual behavior, and action-structure duality. Since many of the alignment issues in the review are caused by methodological problems, we propose a series of methodological tools that can provide a more accurate understanding of B2B practices in future research.

The author reviews five generations of views of theory–practice tensions, and explores their implications to socio-ecological practice research. Concerns with wicked problems led to considerations of argumentative planning; questions of resolving conflicting arguments led to process designs of mediated-negotiations. On-going concerns with deliberation reveal the dangers of deliberative malpractices. The pragmatic imperative to act in fluid, complex, and contested settings requires creative and practically situated improvisation.

Insistence on verbal literacy as a key skill occurs throughout education. There needs to be a greater awareness of literacy as a sensory capacity: creative voices are seen, heard and performed. I argue that all the senses form embodied understanding, and obstructing this flow can impede learning. This article questions how we can use embodied, sensory and performative methods to enable student ownership of theoretical and cultural texts. It contributes a theorised approach and transferrable methods for students to build confidence in their learning capacity. I discuss how interpretations of texts can be seen as discourses that are expressed through visualisation, embodiment and affect to empower learning. Practice research with vocational art and design students is explored, to address their expressions of empowerment, in connection with their interpretations of Foucault and Freire. Students’ individuated sensory methods of representing empowerment also offer more inclusive possibilities for decolonised cultural ownership through arts practice.

The object of research is the processes of reducing economic activity in Ukraine and the world during COVID-restrictions, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in 2020 compared to 2019 by country and in various sectors of the economy. The most topical researches and publications in which the given questions are covered are analyzed. Based on statistical data, the paper shows a slight decline in Ukraine's GDP in 2020. Based on the consideration of the negative impact of quarantine restrictions, it was noted that the type of economic activity (EA) such as passenger transport suffered the most. At the same time, as the production of foreign trade, the performance of retail trade and construction has improved its dynamics. Elsewhere in the world, there has also been a slight economic downturn, while China has been able to maintain a slight increase in GDP. For 2021, there is a positive outlook for economic growth. The introduction of lockdowns and quarantine restrictions has led to a simultaneous reduction in CO2emissions worldwide and reduced the negative impact on the environment. Thanks to the data of carbon dioxide emissions monitoring, it is possible to see a significant reduction in emissions since the beginning of COVID-restrictions in 2020. At the end of the year, the level of emissions reached almost the same level as before the restrictions, but the total volume for the year decreased significantly. If to look at the sectors, the largest amount of carbon dioxide emissions decreased in the aviation sector. This also applies to the land transport sector. Peaks of falling CO2emissions occur in April 2020. The study showed that the reduction in economic activity due to«lockdowns»and quarantine restrictions affected the fall in energy consumption, especially in the aviation and land transport sectors, and this, in turn, led to a reduction carbon dioxide. This duly explains the relationship between declining economic growth and reducing CO2emissions. The conducted research will be of interest to relevant ministries and departments in terms of their areas of responsibility, relevant organizations dealing with environmental and economic research, specialists who study and use in practice research on socio-economic problems of society.

Aim This study aimed to explore the views and experiences of research healthcare professionals towards their redeployment to frontline clinical roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background Healthcare professionals working in research were redeployed during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the delivery of clinical services across the National Health Service. They are experienced clinicians with research knowledge and skills, and specific working patterns. It is important to understand how these professionals were used and supported during their transition to clinical roles during the pandemic. Method Between July and September 2020, 15 research healthcare professionals were recruited into this qualitative study. Each participant completed a single semi-structured interview lasting approximately 30-60 min, conducted remotely using a teleconferencing platform. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, and data analysed by the process of inductive thematic analysis with the assistance of NVivo 12.06 (Nov, 2019). Findings Four main themes were identified from analysis of the transcripts: (a) initial personal response to the pandemic (subthemes: of anxieties due to unknown disease impact and concern for others); (b) mobilization for clinical redeployment (subthemes: motivations for voluntary redeployment, the professional challenges, personal fears and the organization and preparedness for redeployment); (c) adaptive deployment to clinical roles (subthemes: adapting to new roles and responsibilities, challenges faced and coping mechanisms), (d) reflections and learnings (subthemes: reintegration to original roles and sense of achievement). Conclusion Research healthcare professionals are highly adaptable professionals equipped with core transferable skills. With the appropriate support, re-familiarization and induction they are a valuable resource during the pandemic response. Implications to practice Research healthcare professionals are experienced practitioners with transferrable skills and strong sense of duty and resilience. Induction programmes to promote recalibration to clinical settings would improve their adaptability, foster confidence and emotional well-being. Careful consideration is required prior to mass redeployment to ensure research continuity in both COVID-19 and other health conditions.

Based on the cultural self-confidence of the packaging design curriculum ideological and political teaching reform research, by embedding cultural projects into the packaging design curriculum, with cultural creative packaging design as the core curriculum content, the packaging design curriculum ideological and political teaching reform practice research is carried out, the purpose is to let the visual Communication design students can not only acquire due professional knowledge in packaging design class, but also cultivate students' love for Chinese traditional culture, enhance cultural self-confidence, and promote the development of Chinese cultural packaging design industry. This course runs through cultural projects, and is divided into three parts: "Packaging Design Research and Positioning", "Packaging Structure Design", and "Packaging Visual Design", which mainly incorporates "Chinese Traditional Packaging", "Chinese Traditional Characters", and "Packaging Design". Ideological and political content of courses such as "Chinese Traditional Pattern" and "Modern Design of Traditional Brand Packaging". At the same time, innovative teaching ideas and teaching methods have been incorporated in the course of curriculum ideological and political reform practice.

Purpose: More context-specific research regarding the praxis of organisational coaching was needed for increased understanding of this emerging profession. Whilst progress was being made internationally, African coaching practice research was sparse, leading to potentially false assumptions about local praxis based on international trends. The aim of this research was to gain a context-specific perspective on the coaching approaches used by organisational coaches in Africa and the factors that influence the rates they charge.\ud \ud Design/methodology/approach: Snowball sampling was used to collect survey data from organisational coaches practicing in Africa (n = 299). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.\ud \ud Findings/results: Organisational coaches in Africa predominantly use the Behavioural or Goal-focussed or GROW approach, but employ more sophisticated approaches in more complex situations. They charge a mean rate of R1761 ($1041) per hour (R1573 [$93] in South Africa) with higher qualified, more experienced and older coaches charging a higher rate. Receiving supervision plays no role in rates charged; however, belonging to a coaching body correlates to higher rates. Male and female coaches charge similar rates, suggesting a level of gender equality in the African coaching profession.\ud \ud Practical implications: Organisational coaches should ensure they have a wide repertoire of approaches to cater for the complexity of organisational situations. Coaches could increase their rates by obtaining high quality coaching education and join coaching regulatory bodies. Coaches in Africa could expand their market internationally given that they charge significantly lower rates, especially given the acceptance of virtual coaching in recent times.\ud \ud Originality/value: This is the first study to our knowledge that investigates pan-African coaching praxis.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relevance of Cuba’s medical system, its health tourism and related diplomacy in the context of the recent COVID-19 pandemic for the global response to disease outbreaks. In addition to Cuba being a destination for leisure tourists in the Caribbean, the renowned Cuban medical system attracts thousands of health tourists seeking low-cost but high-quality treatment. This paper demonstrates how Cuba’s unique response to the pandemic, which included sending thousands of medical staff abroad, can inform structural and global issues and contribute to a more sustainable future. Design/methodology/approach The research in this study is primarily drawn from published academic and media sources that address Cuba’s medical system, its health tourism and the government’s response to the recent pandemic. The author, a political scientist and an author of many publications on Cuba, and the PI of a study focused on Cuban tourism, will also draw on her expertise. Findings This paper addresses the Cuban Government’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic and places this response in the context of Cuba’s medical system, its health tourism and related diplomacy. It reveals key lessons from Cuba’s response for other tourist destination states and, more broadly, for the worldwide response to global outbreaks and the management of health systems. The findings will further research in diplomacy and tourism as well as inform policy and practice. Research limitations/implications This paper explores an ongoing topic and thus further research will be required following the pandemic. Practical implications This research note offers important implications for practice including providing accurate, research-based information that challenges misinformation about Cuba’s health system, its medical diplomacy program, health tourism and its response to COVID-19. It offers valuable lessons for public health authorities including the importance of preventative health measures, community medicine and the benefits of working globally to combat outbreaks through the sharing of medical staff and resources. Social implications This research note reveals the health, political and social implications of Cuba’s response in this time of crisis. It shows the benefits of a robust but low-cost community-based medicine program, medical diplomacy and how a state’s response during crisis can moderate the global inequities and injustices such as unequal access to care that often accompany disease outbreaks such as COVID-19. Originality/value This research note is an early analysis of a response by an important tourist destination country to the pandemic. The author anticipates that the information provided to the international community via this open access journal will offer practical implications for the ongoing global efforts to manage this crisis and contribute to the research on tourism, diplomacy, justice and health policy.

My research has been about the aesthetics of light, as an entity in itself, and how the viewer interacts with it; holography is one of the media that I have used in this process. For example, in "Specific Light Objects" installation, the viewer is allowed to immerse itself in an experience where visual and sound sensations are intermingled in the exploration of the holographic image, and invite the self-knowledge of the relativity of our perception and consequently of the vision of our cognitive universe. The dialogue of holography with other media is adequate to the demands of contemporary art, in the form of multimedia hybrids, and in the form of installations, in which the holographic work constitutes one more element of the whole. Developments in production techniques of pulsed holograms and holographic stereograms have combined to provide high-quality three-dimensional illusions and movement. Currently considering the new era of holographic image and the creation of digital holograms, where image systems are being developed to capture dimensional content and also possible software to edit it, in this paper we are analysing the creative process and experimental techniques of holographic image from the point of view of the visual arts.

In order to carry forward the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation, new media technology has played an important role. The new media’s transmission ability and artistic display ability are outstanding, which can perfectly integrate the flash point of traditional culture and let it bloom with vitality. New media has a unique way of development, so that colleges and universities can cultivate Chinese excellent traditional culture, master the basic concepts of traditional culture, and make better contributions to the revival of the great “Chinese dream”. Therefore, this paper explores the inheritance and innovation of traditional culture from the perspective of new media, and puts forward guiding suggestions by investigating the status quo, opportunities and challenges of traditional culture inheritance and innovation in Colleges and universities. The effectiveness of the proposal is verified by questionnaire survey in Colleges and universities. Results the response is good, and it is worth promoting to the universities.

Scenario-based design thinking aims to improve students’ design ability, creativity as well as learning transfer ability by the improvement of teaching techniques, innovation of teaching methods and teaching practice. The “Little Sun” stroller design project is introduced into the teaching practice process. Different scenario prototypes are completed and tested after understanding and exploring the scenario, and researching the needs and prioritizing them to create new ideas. The above process can be cyclical, showing a non-linear characteristic. This product design teaching practice research is based on real projects, which is an active exploration and useful attempt for scenario-based thinking in industrial design professional courses.

With the rapid development of network information technology, the traditional teaching methods have also ushered in a variety of development models. The natural interactive teaching assistant system based on network has been paid much attention to by all walks of life. This paper introduces Kinect-based motion-sensing technology into classroom teaching and realizes the teaching function by establishing gesture recognition. This method has the characteristics of novel form, flexible method, and low cost, which can effectively improve the teaching quality and has a wide application prospect. This new auxiliary teaching mode is not only flexible in teaching methods, but also easy for the interaction between teachers and students.

In this communication, the author defines ecopracticology as a legitimate field of scholarly inquiry, discusses its theoretical independence and interdependence, introduces Socio-Ecological Practice Research (SEPR) as its home journal, and pays tribute to those who contributed to the field’s development. In compliance with journal’s requirements for the article type Communication, presentations are concise; footnotes are used as needed to compensate brevity.

This chapter clarifies and examines some of the concepts and theoretical positions that influence and challenge practice research. It creates a balance between the need to further develop and define practice research. The chapter presents pertinent theories and the background that has helped to foster practice research. Then the chapter also considers important definitions used in practice research in the light of the ongoing discussions and development of this field. In spite of immediate differences between evidence-based research and practice research, both approaches focus on social work practice. The concept of evidence-based research in social work aims at describing the effects of social work–the direct connection between an intervention and the effect of this intervention. The randomized controlled trials does not provide an explanation of what is going on inside the black box–it only demonstrates a statistical connection between intervention and its effect.

This chapter reflects on an interdisciplinary practice research project, The Verbatim Formula (TVF), based at Queen Mary University of London, consisting of a series of residential workshops with care-experienced young people using verbatim theatre practices. Drawing on feminist care ethicist Nel Noddings’ analogy between aesthetic engagement and the art of caring, the authors reflect on the shared values and aesthetics of acts of care and participatory practices, and how these inhere in the attentiveneness, attunement and receptivity involved in performing and receiving verbatim material using headphone theatre technique. The chapter incorporates testimonies from its care-experienced co-researchers and draws on Joan Tronto’s argument that there is a radical need for an intervention into the dynamics of power in society that ensure that those for whom the structures of care are least effective are heard and attended to. In acknowledging the ‘ugliness’ of caring and the ongoing labour of attunement, listening emerges in TVF both as an aesthetic but also as a care-based participatory and political practice, that aims to empower care-experienced young people to intervene in the structures that represent them and to support adults to honour their experiences and needs.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide a swift perspective toJTFreaders on the novel coronavirus outbreak that commenced in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and is currently ongoing. The study situates the current outbreak within prior pandemics and offers some directions for research and practice. Swift attention is needed to this event and the future of travel and tourism in a world where disease outbreaks and pandemics will become increasingly frequent due to increased travel and ease of access to destinations worldwide.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws from published academic research studies, as well as current media sources emerging, as the novel coronavirus situation is unfolding. In addition, the authors draw on the multidisciplinary expertise of the two authors (one based in tourism studies and the other an epidemiologist and public health expert).FindingsThis paper captures events on the novel coronavirus, as they are unfolding now, situates this in relation to the research literature on past pandemics like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Ebola and draws some important directions to guide research and practice.Research limitations/implicationsThis is a viewpoint paper and offers some emerging perspectives, issues and challenges arising in relation to the current novel coronavirus outbreak. This is situated more broadly in a large research literature that has been drawn on in a very succinct manner to ground this viewpoint. Future research will need to explore the larger literature.Practical implicationsThis viewpoint offers the following valuable implications for practice at the local level and the regional/global level: countering misinformation and xenophobia through the communication of accurate facts related to the disease in question (the novel coronavirus in this case) is essential; close collaboration and cooperation between tourism stakeholders (including service providers and destination management organizations) and public health authorities; greater responsibility by residents and tourists to seek out correct scientific facts on the disease and take sensible precautions, as well as exercise care to those suffering the adverse impacts; and global coordination and attention to vulnerable destinations is needed more concretely (recommended in crisis management and recovery studies but not well implemented yet).Social implicationsAs noted above under practical implications, this viewpoint identified important social implications in terms of inequities and injustices that arise during disease outbreaks like the novel coronavirus and prior outbreaks like SARS and Ebola. These range from discrimination and racism as well as inequities related to managing the impacts on vulnerable destinations whose health facilities may be far from adequate to handle such outbreaks and the challenges of misinformation among visitors and residents that indirectly or directly affect the destination.Originality/valueThis viewpoint is being submitted as the novel coronavirus epidemic is unfolding, and it is hoped that sharing it speedily via an open access journal will assist in better managing the research of what will continue to be an increasing future challenge for destinations and societies in a world of mobilities and increasing travel forecast.

How to incorporate critical and societally relevant thinking and acting into Higher Education teaching formats? The article proposes social design workshops, which teach ethics through design by explicitly addressing and building on the functional diversity of participating stakeholders, and by fostering ongoing mutual reflection. These workshops are inspired by participatory design, political theory, disability studies and psychological practice research. By drawing on empirical material from a design workshop with Bachelor students and external collaborators including psychologically vulnerable stakeholders, we argue for an adaptive framework of analytical-pedagogical inquiry that can be continuously co-designed. In particular, ethical design requires a broad and emergent definition of participation. Ethical design is participatory-democratic co-design, which acknowledges and bridges across the various stakeholders’ functional diversity.

This is a conversation that took place between three practitioner-academics one morning in Melbourne. All three work and practice in the field of the moving image: from screen production to audiovisual installation to screenwriting. Our conversation is underpinned by previous research we have undertaken in this field, namely the launching of a moving image journal, Sightlines, and a companion journal article on the process of setting it up, which focussed on the issues presented when trying to establish peer review protocols and guidelines for moving image works. This study adopted social network analysis (SNA) to interpret a Facebook fan page used by a youth outreach project in Hong Kong. The study aimed to: i) explore what types of open data can be captured from social media, ii) explore in what ways SNA metrics can be used to generate meaningful indicators that help track relationship changes, and iii) examine to what extent SNA findings agree with social workers' perceptions. These results preliminarily suggest the feasibility and validity of SNA in social work practice research. This study adds to the emerging knowledge base of how practitioners and researchers might use SNA to assess social networks, supplement need assessments, track service users' behavioural changes, and evaluate services.

Student evaluation in the new era should be rooted in the educational macro background of "cultivating people by virtue" and comply with the overall policy orientation of educational evaluation reform. This research focuses on the construction and implementation of value-added evaluation system. Combined with the characteristics of vocational school students, this paper constructs a four-level index system and refines the student evaluation standards. The evaluation subjects are students, head teachers, teachers, parents and enterprise managers. Through the development of the related APP, it is convenient for each evaluation subject to input information, and finally use K-line chart to visually present the change process of the appreciation in students' literacy. A value-added evaluation system with strong timeliness, objectivity, motivation and operability is constructed.

Background Alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems confer a global, prodigious burden of disease, disability, and premature mortality. Even so, little is known regarding how, and by what means, individuals successfully resolve AOD problems. Greater knowledge would inform policy and guide service provision. Method Probability-based survey of US adult population estimating: 1) AOD problem resolution prevalence; 2) lifetime use of “assisted” (i.e., treatment/medication, recovery services/mutual help) vs. “unassisted” resolution pathways; 3) correlates of assisted pathway use. Participants (response = 63.4% of 39,809) responding “yes” to, “Did you use to have a problem with alcohol or drugs but no longer do?” assessed on substance use, clinical histories, problem resolution. Results Weighted prevalence of problem resolution was 9.1%, with 46% self-identifying as “in recovery”; 53.9% reported “assisted” pathway use. Most utilized support was mutual-help (45.1%,SE = 1.6), followed by treatment (27.6%,SE = 1.4), and emerging recovery support services (21.8%,SE = 1.4), including recovery community centers (6.2%,SE = 0.9). Strongest correlates of “assisted” pathway use were lifetime AOD diagnosis (AOR = 10.8[7.42–15.74], model R2 = 0.13), drug court involvement (AOR = 8.1[5.2-12.6], model R2 = 0.10), and, inversely, absence of lifetime psychiatric diagnosis (AOR = 0.3[0.2–0.3], model R2 = 0.10). Compared to those with primary alcohol problems, those with primary cannabis problems were less likely (AOR = 0.7[0.5–0.9]) and those with opioid problems were more likely (AOR = 2.2[1.4-3.4]) to use assisted pathways. Indices related to severity were related to assisted pathways (R2 Conclusions Tens of millions of Americans have successfully resolved an AOD problem using a variety of traditional and non-traditional means. Findings suggest a need for a broadening of the menu of self-change and community-based options that can facilitate and support long-term AOD problem resolution.

While creating an artwork, the artist must deal with deciding what to keep and what to let go. For anything that remains, something else has to be discarded. This happens in various forms of art. Presence and absence dictate what is left, and what is taken.Given this premise, this paper asks: what if the performer leaves the scene? What will remain? And what will be the consequences of such leftovers for both the audience and the performance? The present article aims to answer these questions by analysing three works by three artists who have dealt with presence and absence in different ways: Siluetas Series (1973-78) by Ana Mendieta, Daydream Island (2000) by Mike Parr, and my own piece The Foreigner (2016). This editorial outlines the theoretical framework in which the papers included in the present issue are set. The guiding principle laid out is that investigations of professional practice cannot be limited to the analysis of language use in itself. The inherent diversity of applied linguistic research is discussed, and it is pointed out that what binds much of this research together is the identification of societal problems that are linguistically and discursively manifest, with a conviction that the researcher-analyst has the necessary tools to approach the data, resulting in insights that would be practically relevant. The difficulty achieving this practical relevance leads researchers to position themselves differently and draw upon different research paradigms, some of which are then discussed. The editorial concludes that challenges remain with regard to how to strengthen the interface between professional practice research and applied linguistics, including the occasioning of critical reflections about applied linguists’ professional practice.

Over recent years, media as practice has emerged as a fruitful framework for exploring what people do with media. After reviewing the current state of research, this commentary argues that there is need to widen our understanding and to advance our conceptualisation of media practices. It seems no longer overstated to say that almost any form of political engagement today relates in one way or another to media technologies and infrastructures. As a consequence, media are increasingly sites of an active political struggle in their own right. To bring these developments into dialogue with media practice research, ‘acting on’ is introduced as a lens through which we can investigate the opportunities and limitations of actors’ practices related to media technologies and infrastructures for political engagement.

Meditative practices have a long history in India and have influenced contemporary meditative programs elsewhere in the world. Over the last several decades, the use of meditation as a therapeutic tool has been investigated in regard to physical, emotional and behavioral effects with impressive results. In parallel to this has been a growing interest in research on spirituality, spiritual growth, and therapeutic modalities that incorporate the spiritual dimension of the person. Ironically, very little research has explored the interface between these two constructs, despite how closely linked they are traditionally. This paper addresses the range of ways in which spirituality and spiritual development might be fruitfully investigated in the context of meditative practice, bringing further understanding to both psychological constructs. Furthermore, the widely recognized significance of both meditative and spiritual experiences suggests that cross-cultural research may be particularly valuable at identifying factors that engage the universal human capacity of spirituality, and the particular potential for meditative practice in doing so.

This article addresses some critical issues in the research environment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates at Australian universities. It will be useful to non-Indigenous supervisors of Indigenous students, as well as Indigenous students considering the different kinds of creative practice projects possible at postgraduate level. The article examines the nexus between Indigenous knowledge and creative practice research. The significance of this relationship becomes more apparent with increasing participation of Indigenous creative practitioners in postgraduate education. By drawing on our experience as supervisors of PhD- and MA-level higher degrees with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates, we discuss some of the issues that may arise for supervisors and Indigenous researchers in creative practice research environments. In this article, I discuss the different forms of practice that can be identified in relations to the relaunch of empowerment within employment. This is a realm that demands that professionals own their own practice, actively relating to, creating and interpreting the practice of social work and establishing cooperation and partnership with their clients. This article looks at the forms of practice that are developed in this process, thus contributing to the discussion of the professional translation of empowerment and of how professionals can form partnerships with users, actively involving them in their own cases without producing yet another form of clientization. The major challenge is to discover whether empowerment can be translated into expansion of the realm of possibilities for inclusion, partnership and ownership for users as well as professionals – and if so, how. Citizens, practitioners, and researchers must work together to shed light on empowerment as a concept, as a mindset and as a practical tool in social work, discussing empowerment and reflecting critically on it. This article is a contribution to the discussion of how the practical translation of the concept can contribute productively to the development of critical social work. The article also examines how empowerment as a concept relates to older concepts in social work such as participation and involvement, and to newer concepts such as new public management, new public governance and co-creation in the public sector.

Body Of (As) Knowledge (BOK) is a collaborative practice-based research project reflecting and expanding upon the practices of dance artist-scholars Sally Doughty, Lisa Kendall and Rachel Krische. BOK examines the body as a living archive, focusing on the collection, articulation and dissemination of the moving body as opposed to more traditional archival materials of artefacts and documents. This multi-stranded project engages with Derby Museum Trust to develop understanding of how traditional processes of archiving work, and includes performative outcomes presented in the museum space, NottDance (2017) and InDialogue Symposium (2016). The three authors propose a radical contribution to the publication in the form of a link to an online holding space for this research project. The digital holding space is a repository for film, audio and written documentation of BOK and seeks to highlight and privilege the assertion that the moving body acts as a living resource of archival information. The authors recognise the inherent contradiction of constructing an online artefact of this living, embodied project, and therefore propose that the online resource, in correlation with the concept of the moving body as archive, has a finite life-span. The authors will utilise encryption technology that makes electronic data ‘self-destruct’ after a specified period of time: the holding space will ‘erode’ or ‘rust’ as time passes, and after a certain point the online document can no longer be read (Bleeker 2012: 1). Therefore, the content held on-line remains only in the memories, bodies and practices of the three artist-scholars and the readers who engage with the online artefacts within the identified timeframe. Challenging the traditional notion that ‘the archive [is] that which endures’ (Roms 2013: 45), this contribution promotes a time-sensitive archive which is ‘subject to change, or even disappearance’ (ibid), to reflect the condition of a mortal, corporeal archive.

The idea that social work needs to be concerned with thinking and acting in a more collaborative way with the people in need is common around the world. At the international level, codes of ethics and social work principles inspire practitioners, researchers, and educators in bridging the gap between themselves and people in trouble, commonly known as service users. Beyond a common agreement around such principle, to realize collaborative relationships in practice is a challenge that requires prudence, coherence, and methodology. The Relational social work method supports the practical development of participation, collaboration, and reciprocity. Through concepts and examples, this article aims to describe how service users can assume the role of collaborators in social practice, research, and education.

Affective Cinema is an AHRC-funded practice research project in film, informed by art cinema, experimental film traditions, film theory and philosophy. The outcomes of the research are films that combine aspects of cinematic style, nuances of performance and elements of chance. When all these attributes align in an unpredictable way, a feeling of meaning can be produced: a moment of cinema that is engaging and captivating without trying to tell a story or communicating something specific or intentional through the film. The research thereby aims to expand the potential of the cinematic form by producing experimental film structures in which this feeling of meaning can be identified, and by testing and developing methods that can lead to its emergence. The research also seeks to unite the practice and theory in a unique way – bringing the theory directly into the practice through a poetic voice-over. This submission to IJCMR represents a new version of Affective Cinema, one that was designed especially for the MediaWall at Bath Spa University, and which was exhibited between March 26–April 5 2019.

Societal demand and political support still drive researchers and practitioners to work in numerous initiatives to create Digital Innovations (DI) in healthcare. Despite all support, the problem of unsuccessful or not-satisfying translation of project outputs into the healthcare reality remains. One critical aspect is the integration of a DI into evolved Hospital Information Systems (HIS). As DI projects often are conducted in practice research consortia, such projects can provide close insights into real-world settings. Therefore, a rigor analysis is necessary, which we perform using the Action Design Research approach that helps to analyze the role of HIS in DI projects for healthcare. The main contribution of this paper is the detailed description of a context-specific framework for the formalization of learning plus a systematic presentation of enablers and barriers of DI projects in healthcare. The framework matches both a project management perspective by considering different stages of a DI project and an interoperability perspective as an overall key factor for successful implementation.

Background This article offers a reflection by a novice researcher undertaking an integrated clinical academic internship with the National Institute for Health Research and Health Education England. Aim To offer insight into research internships, and demonstrate the benefits and challenges encountered. Discussion Exposure to research while remaining in clinical practice gives nurses the opportunity to increase their knowledge, develop research skills and network. Associated challenges include feeling like a novice, balancing the demands of clinical practice and research, and the development of new skills. Conclusion Internship programmes can create health systems in which practitioners also undertake research but there are associated challenges. Implications for practice Research internships offer nurses insight and exposure to a world of research that may previously have been invisible to them; they can act as a platform for nurses to develop clinical academic careers.

This article discusses the use of a filmed conversation as a medium of reflection on creative practice, in particular the practice of making filmpoems. We consider in what sense the filmed conversation might be a rigorous and productive mode of reflection, and describe the process of producing the film, as well as analysing the mode’s effectiveness as a way of reflecting on practice. This analysis is presented as a case study of a non-conventional medium of reflection and of its relation to the more conventional scholarly article. We argue that the reflection recorded in the film is distorted by production and editorial processes, but that nevertheless it provides a useful and distinctive form of reflection to augment conventional accounts. By exploring how reflection on practice is shaped by the medium of publication, this article contributes to advancing the discipline of creative writing and making its reflective element more productive.

The promote trend of K-12 science education of improving comprehensive quality through science curriculum integration has been formed. STEAM education receives attention with the integration of the concept of interdisciplinary integration. This paper analyzed the practice of science curriculum in China and the research status of STEAM-based teaching model domestic and overseas. Meanwhile it adopts action research constructing the STEAM-based K-12 science curriculum instructional design model to further verify the validity. The model is certified to improve students' scientific knowledge, scientific quality, interdisciplinary integration ability and creative thinking through the instructional design and practice research.

Effective school assessment is an important means in helping schools find problems, analyze problems and solve problems. However in the background of increasing demand of “good schools”, how to further improve the quality of running a school by assessing has become the main challenge for many head-masters and the relevant scholars. Especially when the educational government will be separated from schools, it is difficult for primary and secondary schools to be clear about the direction and focus of self-management as lack of the basic theory, basic ideas and practical experience of self-management. As a result, primary and secondary schools need a kind of self-management-oriented evaluation system which can guide them to do the right thing in the very beginning of self-management period to improve the quality of schools’ running. Based on a lot of literature analysis and practice research, this paper tries to construct a school management evaluation framework based on resource-based theory to help schools step into the right way.

Recent research in New Zealand (Beddoe, 2010) and elsewhere (Joubert, 2006) has documented low levels of confidence amongst social work graduates in conducting applied social research. This article will examine the reasons why research literacy amongst students and graduates appears to be at a low ebb, and will report on the early developmental phases of a field education model being piloted in Christchurch, New Zealand, to promote knowledge and skill development in practice research. The process used for planning a suite of practice research placements is outlined, together with examining the application of the communities of practice model for facilitating this intervention. Practical strategies for including research learning objectives and activities are provided, with the view to encouraging routine inclusion of different tasks associated with systematic inquiry into all field placements. The evaluation design for the group of practice research placements is outlined with considerations of the project limitations and potential for future development. A second article on how the project progressed will be submitted later in 2012.
