Although considered as one of the main drivers of the national economy, SMEs are very vulnerable to business competition. Limited access to resources including knowledge resources makes SMEs constrained to develop their support system. One of the obstacles faced by SMEs today is their limited grasp to the business financial management concept. They also have a difficulty in accessing a simple financial accounting application that fit to their business conditions. The community service program implemented by the Ma Chung Abdimas Grant Team aims to improve the financial literacy of SME members of Forum Komunikasi Pelaku Usaha in Kabupaten Malang, as well as their access to computer-based financial accounting application. This program is implemented in the form of training and mentoring to improve SME’s understanding and skills in financial management. The results concluded that the training program was effective. It is able to improve financial management literacy for IKM partners.

Online discussion platforms are perceived as the next-generation method of citizen involvement. Such platforms can collect, integrate, and synthesize opinions to achieve social good. Crowd-scale platforms are being developed and deployed in social experiments that involve citizens and local governments. In such platforms, human facilitation is often used to preserve the quality of the discussions. Human facilitators often face difficulties when the discussions grow in size. In this paper, we present “D-agree,” a crowd-scale discussion support system based on an automated facilitation agent. The agent extracts discussion structures from online discussions, analyzes them, and posts facilitation messages. We conducted small- and large-scale social experiments in Japan to assess the social impact of the platform. The results showcase the success of our automated facilitation agents in gathering valuable opinions from citizens. In addition, our experiments highlight the effect of an automated facilitation agent on online discussions. In particular, we find that combining the agent facilitator with human facilitators leads to higher user satisfaction.

Background: A mother feels complete when she fulfills her role in protecting her child from harm. If a child is diagnosed with a terminal illness and reaches End of Life (EOL), the mother’s life is affected negatively. The mother is affected mentally, psychologically, and physically because her child is dying.Purpose: Explore the recent studies that focused on experiences of mothers caring for a child receiving End of Life Care (EOLC) at home or a healthcare facility. Methods: An electronic search was done in multiple databases, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Library, PsycINFO, PubMed, CINAHL, and Academic Search Complete. The included studies were published within the past five years, studies about EOL/ EOLC, hospice care, pediatric care, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies. Thematic synthesis following PRISMA guidelines. Results: Four themes emerged from the thematic synthesis. The main themes included decision making challenges, communication with healthcare professionals, parents’ support system, and grief. Parents were included in most studies. However, the number of mothers exceeded the number of fathers. Some researchers mentioned that there was no difference between their participants (most participants were Caucasian). Conclusion: There is limited information available about children and their family members’ experiences at EOL/ EOLC in Saudi Arabia as has been studied in other countries. Based on this systematic review, more studies are needed related to children at EOL in Saudi Arabia.

Previous research has shown a clear link between childhood disability and child poverty. This is related to the fact that parents of disabled children (1) need to provide more care, which impedes their employment participation; and (2) more often belong to disadvantaged social categories. However, the adverse relationship between childhood disability and child poverty can be cushioned by cash support systems. Hitherto, the literature lacks insight into how the receipt of different cash support systems is related to parental employment and social background, and what joint role these three factors play in understanding the poverty risk of these children. To fill this gap, a case study on Belgium is performed using unique and large-scale register data. The results show that disabled children have a lower income poverty risk than non-disabled children, even when parental employment and social background are taken into account. This can be explained by the targeted cash support disabled children receive. However, previous research showed that a substantial group of disabled children does not receive the benefit. Hence, more could be achieved if the non-take-up would be addressed, in particular among the most vulnerable children. ispartof: Journal Of Social Policy vol:51 issue:4 pages:965-988 status: published

Understanding college students’ perceptions of parental support and its impact on student adjustment have important implications for maximizing retention rates within higher education institutions. College students ( N = 53) participated in qualitative interviews focused on students’ perceptions of mothers’ and fathers’ support during college and its impact on college adjustment. Holistic coding interviews indicated three different classifications of parents based on levels of support: supportive, ambivalent, and unsupportive. Students indicated that their parents continued to be the main source of support and a key factor that supports their adjustment during the college years. In contrast, students who did not receive such support expressed having difficulties continuing working toward their degree. Students’ narratives also indicated that mothers and fathers provided support in different ways. These findings have important implications for practice, and in particular how high education institutions can promote adjustment and retention rates by encouraging parental engagement.

The first years of teaching are crucial for novice teachers’ integration into and retainment in the education system. The support they receive from experienced teachers impacts their professional development. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers require specialized support from domain-specific mentors. In this study, we examined how a three-level mentoring support system contributes to STEM novice teachers’ professional growth (PG) and to their mentors. The support system levels are individual mentoring, group mentoring, and mentoring networks. Based on the framework of teachers’ professional development, there are three PG dimensions: personal, professional, and social. Our research goal was to analyze teachers’ professional growth by the various mentoring level and dimension combinations. The study, conducted using a mixed methods approach, included 123 novice and 78 experienced STEM teachers. We examined the novice teachers’ perceptions of their teaching efficacy, the mentoring factors, correlations between the professional growth dimensions, and the contribution of each support level to the growth dimensions. We found that experienced teachers perceive novice teachers’ efficacy as lower than that perceived by the novice teachers. We identified gaps between the mentoring factors described by novice and experienced teachers and a strong correlation between the growth dimensions. All three mentoring support levels facilitate substantive personal, professional, and social growth. Individual mentoring contributes the most to all three growth dimensions, followed by mentoring networks. The contribution of this research is its elucidation of the intertwined support levels, which provide scaffolds for the novice teachers and facilitate the growth of the experienced teachers.

Our research team interviewed owners or managers (n =10) of commercial (restaurants, caterers, food hubs) and institutional (schools, hospitals) foodservice businesses in Vermont in the summer and fall of 2020 to gather information about their experiences and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This article discusses the information sources they utilized to make decisions about operating procedures and business strategies as the pandemic unfolded. Though this is not a comparative analysis to other states, Vermont had strong networks and support systems in place before the onset of COVID-19 that were poised to respond quickly as events unfolded. In addition, these interviews highlighted the importance of both formal and informal information sources, which filled different niches in the information ecosystem.

The exposure of healthcare professionals to (un)ethical situations starts in the educational institution, and the first serious cases occur during internships. The aim of the current study is to investigate the problems and causes (concerning unethical situations) related to students’ perception of ethics in the study and practice environment and to describe the awareness of Tallinn Health Care College’s students of professional ethics and the use of existing support systems in solving unethical problems. The findings indicated the importance of ethical communication and behaviour by all respondents. Empathy, ethical feedback, and confidentiality were perceived to be an integral part of ethical standards within the study and training environment. Respondents pointed out that ethical issues may occur not only between a health care professional and a patient, but also between a health care professional and doctor, supervisor, or teacher. A practical approach to ethical decision-making integrated into professional training has been assessed by all respondents.

The Japanese population is rapidly aging, with fewer proportion of children, and its production-age population has decreased correspondingly, with a resulting shortage in nursing-care service providers. To cope with this situation, the Japanese government has focused on developing and deploying nursing-care robots to compensate for the shortage of human resources. As most nursing-care services are intended for the elderly and disabled, they are traditionally considered as human services. To implement nursing-care robots on a large scale, numerous approaches and measures have been considered, such as modeling the approaches to effectively use nursing-care robots in nursing-care fields, rewarding highly useful nursing-care robots with greater nursing-care compensations, and responding to consultations at nursing-care sites by building a platform to develop, demonstrate, and deploy nursing-care robots. However, nursing-care services using robots are still not popular because of prevailing anxieties about and resistance to such technologies; therefore, the promotion of nursing-care services using robot technologies remains a challenge. Presently, a system capable of supporting not only a single nursing-care scenario but also a series of nursing-care operations is highly desired. In the future, nursing-care services have to be made more rewarding using robots, for which it is vitally important to provide support in the form of evidence-based, scientific, and effective nursing-care services.

School leaders’ experiences and perceptions of students’ domestic violence experiences and trauma-informed school interventions have been overlooked. This semi-structured qualitative study aimed to investigate three areas regarding school leaders’ perceptions regarding domestic violence-exposed students: 1) the experiences of school leaders in dealing with these students; 2) the barriers and strengths associated with managing these students; and 3) school leaders’ recommendations for overcoming any barriers related to this issue in schools. Interviews conducted with 15 school leaders were analysed using thematic analysis. School leaders were found to be instrumental in influencing school culture and support systems surrounding students’ exposure to domestic violence. However, school leaders provided mixed reports regarding the adequacy of resources for domestic violence-exposed students. Recommendations suggested by school leaders included more domestic violence specific training for school staff and training delivery methods that were more sensitive for staff who have personal experiences with domestic violence. School leaders expressed great concerns for teachers, particularly less experienced teachers, regarding their knowledge and skills to assist students who disclose family violence.

Objective Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has become increasingly popular among youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Used with CGM, remote monitoring (RM) gives caregivers real-time access to patients’ glucose values. Whereas RM may safeguard against hypo- and hyperglycemic events, little is known about how older children and adolescents, who are striving for independence, and their parents view the RM aspect of CGM. The goal of this study was to describe and explore parent and youth perceptions of RM. Methods Youth with T1D and their parents participated separately in semi-structured interviews 2 months after starting CGM. Questions focused on decisions to use and experiences with RM. Results Analysis of 43 parents and 41 youth (13.79 years ± 2.82) interviews revealed four themes, with 10 subthemes. Seven subthemes emerged in parent and youth interviews, and three emerged exclusively in parent interviews. The overarching themes included the impact of RM on (1) peace-of-mind, (2) parental anxiety, (3) communication; and addressed (4) technological limitations that prevented some from using RM. Regardless of youth age, youth and parents found comfort in parental knowledge of glucose values and parental abilities to assist youth (e.g., giving reminders to eat). Whereas RM could lead to conflicts due to excessive communication (e.g., texting), conflicts could be resolved through iterative parent-youth conversations. Conclusion RM may facilitate youth independence by providing a way for them to stay connected to their support system while acquiring developmentally appropriate skills. However, families should have iterative discussions about boundaries to mitigate parental over-involvement.

Introduction : Children in a foster family have a difficult life situation. This is a challenge for both foster parents and teachers. Cooperation based on shared commitment and understanding gives the child a chance to gain positive life experiences. The acquired knowledge and skills can be a resource that will allow the child to change the (often negative) pattern of life of the biological family they come from. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was understanding how foster parents perceive their cooperation with the school their children attend. Method: The authors applied the interpretive paradigm, the phenomenography method in the study. To collect the data, focus interviews were conducted in three groups of foster parents. In total, 21 parents took part in the study. Results: Foster parents notice the division of responsibility in the process of educating children brought up in their families. Their role is to select an institution, start cooperation, help the child learn and accompany rehabilitation, inform the school staff about the specificity of the child’s functioning, and be the advocate for the child. The role of the staff side, according to parents, is to implement the recommendations of specialists, cooperate with parents, set adequate requirements for the child, and present a friendly attitude towards the child and the foster family. Conclusions: Based on the research results, guidelines for the good cooperation of foster parents with the school were formulated. It is important for teachers to understand the specific situation of not only the child (their life experiences, developmental disorders), but also the foster parent, as well as appreciate their commitment to the child. It would be important to create a support system.

The increasing life expectancy of adults with intellectual disabilities has raised new questions and challenges for families. Depending on the severity of their condition, people with intellectual disabilities need support from their families and environment to vary degrees throughout their lives. They depend on their family members, which addiction is a new problem as parents get older, and care will be the responsibility of siblings who are already living independent lives, sometimes geographically far away. Sibling care should be interpreted differently than when it is performed by a parent or a paid carer, it is more emotionally complex, its content and direction are diverse. We know not too much about sibling caregivers, we only have hypothetical answers to the questions based on a small number of studies or research in similar areas. This paper aims to provide an overview of the situation and motivations of adults who care of and take responsibility for their siblings with intellectual disabilities, and of their role and interaction of the various influences that help them understand. Getting to know siblings is necessary in order for the support system of the special education and social policy to adapt properly to the situation of the - unfortunately - barely ‘visible’ population.

Undesirable changes in structural-functional relation of urban landscape structures’ ecological processes lead to energy-information fluxes of support systems being disrupted. By considering the existing challenges in the planning of the Farahzad River-valley Corridor System (FRCS), we studied the state of energy-information fluxes of FRCS within the framework of Urban Landscape Services Network (ULSN) for improving and simplifying future decision-making processes. To do this, ULSN was classified into a network of living orders in three organizational levels: Physical-Biological, Geographical-Anthropological and Ecological-Sociological, as a new paradigmatic approach in which function and position of ULSN are illustrated through energy-information fluxes of a networked urban landscape attributes (vertical, horizontal and global). The energy-information fluxes in FRCS were surveyed through the dynamics of heterogeneity systems in landscape structural components (connectivity-isolation dynamics) and then interpreted at the networked levels of living orders. Based on our findings, inefficient structural changes in FRCS leads to undesired energy-information fluxes, which in turn caused changes in the river-valley’s balanced natural, connected environmental, and integrated landscape structures. Currently, FRCS serves as a usual urban park in which many potentials of energy-information fluxes, or ULSN, have been overlooked in its urban planning. Such classification system, based on the energy-information fluxes within organizational levels and through the heterogeneity of the landscape, would help landscape planners to have a better understanding of the functions and values of FRCS and similar landscape services in order to achieve an integrated urban landscape management.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

After Kyrgyzstan’s independence, reforms were implemented in higher education: new degrees, credit hours, private institutions, tuition in public institutions, and independent accreditation. However, faculty reactions to these reforms have not previously been studied. The authors conducted 57 interviews in four locations over three years. Our findings show that, first, interviewees discussed all kinds of changes in higher education and society. Second, participants were undergoing “concurrent stresses” (Anderson, Goodman, and Schlossberg, 2012) – their personal as well as professional lives were changing. Third, opinions differed. We analyzed these according to three of Schlossberg’s “4 S’s”: differences in faculty selves, situations, and support systems. However, few participants described strategies for dealing with the changes. Fourth, nearly all spoke of the reforms as something not under their control. Fifth, very few faculty members described the changes as unilaterally negative or positive. Most said, “I like this, but not that.”

Purpose To understand how emergency nurses develop resilience in the context of workplace violence. Design This study employed grounded theory methodology. Thirty nurses from three hospital emergency departments in Taiwan were interviewed between August and December 2018. Methods Semistructured interviews were used to collect data. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Findings The process through which emergency nurses who had experienced workplace violence developed resilience took place in three stages: the release of emotions after the assault; the interpretation of conflicting thoughts and actions; and the establishment of strategies to cope with workplace violence in the future. The core theme was the motivating role of professional commitment to emergency patient care. Conclusions The results of this study can inform the development of support systems to enhance the resilience of nurses experiencing workplace violence by alerting healthcare administrators and governing institutions to their needs. Clinical relevance Emergency nurses viewed professional growth and professional commitment as an invisible motivator in the development of resilience following an encounter with workplace violence.

Background Alectinib is approved for the treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring ALK rearrangements. Although generally well tolerated, alectinib can cause serious or life-threatening side effects. Case Presentation Here, we report a case of a patient with NSCLC with an EML4-ALK fusion and was treated with alectinib but who developed grade 4 hyperbilirubinemia after five months on therapy. Alectinib was discontinued, and an artificial liver support system (ALSS) was used with an impressive decline in bilirubin levels. After two months drug-free, the patient experienced disease progression. Ensartinib was initiated as second-line treatment with a best response of stable disease after three months of therapy with no evidence of hyperbilirubinemia. Conclusion This is the first report of ensartinib treatment after alectinib-induced hyperbilirubinemia which was successfully relieved by ALSS treatment and targeted drug cessation.

We propose a justice-based partnership between employees and family members as a means to create services and support systems for people with intellectual disability, enhancing quality of life indicators. More specifically, we examine the links from mutual intergroup justice to three outcomes reported by family members: satisfaction with the center, service quality delivered by employees, and performance focused on the quality of life of people with intellectual disability. We used data from 111 centers. In each center, a group of family members (n = 845) and a group of employees (n = 914) participated. Multilevel modeling revealed that mutual intergroup justice (between employees and family members) has a positive effect on satisfaction with the center, perceptions of functional and relational service quality, and performance based on quality of life.

As grandparental childcare in Japan becomes highly uncommon in recent years, working mothers need to rely more on formal childcare services. In 2015, the Japanese government launched the Comprehensive Support System for Children and Child-rearing (CSSCC) to promote the expansions of early childhood education and care (ECEC) services. This study estimates the effects of ECEC availability on maternal employment in the new context, using a fresh dataset combining official municipality data and individual-level data of a sample of mothers with preschool children extracted from an original Japanese nationwide survey dataset for 2015, 2016, and 2017. Identification for the maternal employment effects is based on the variation across municipalities and over time in the pace of ECEC expansions triggered by the CSSCC. The empirical results show that a one percentage point increase in the capacity rate of ECEC facilities targeted at the 0–5 age group predicts an increase of 0.27 percentage points in mothers’ working probability. The overall increase in working probability is almost entirely explained by the increase in nonregular employment rather than regular employment and is mainly driven by mothers with low education. A new type of ECEC service established under the CSSCC for the 0–2 age group has a sizable effect exclusively on the nonregular employment of mothers from three-generation households. Comparisons with the findings by previous studies and implications for the future design and implementation of family policy are discussed.

PurposeThe objective of this study was to evaluate and compare how school heads and teachers perceived the impact of implementing ISO 9001 Standards on the dimensions management and planning and support and recognition.Design/methodology/approachThe study included 2,192 subjects (86.2% teachers and 13.8% heads) belonging to 85 schools in four Spanish autonomous communities (Castilla y León, Community of Madrid, Andalusia and Community of Valencia). We used an instrument made up of 25 items evaluating both dimensions (Cronbach's α = 0.961). We conducted descriptive and differential analyses (applying ANOVA and calculating the effect size) overall and for the assessments by heads and teachers.FindingsResults show a higher impact in small private schools with state subsidies, with 9–11 years of ISO implementation and receiving internal aid or none at all. The impact was medium–high on the management and planning system and medium–low on support and recognition, with heads evaluating at a significantly higher level the impact of ISO 9001 standards on improvement of preparation of classroom timetables, meetings, analysis of staff expectations and recognition of staff achievements.Originality/valueImplementation of quality management systems in education has increased significantly in the last decades, and it is thus necessary to find evidence on how the resulting improvements are generated in schools. This study provides conclusions to the scientific and professional community about how school heads and teachers perceived the impact of implementing ISO 9001 standards on the dimensions management and planning and support and recognition.

If a far-off future generation writes a complete history of human civilisation, the century from 1950 to 2050 will loom large. This was the era of the Great Acceleration, a rapacious, unrestrained plundering of Earth's natural support systems. But it was also the era of the Great Restoration, when humanity learned again how to live sustainably and in harmony with nature. That second part hasn't happened yet. Whether this history is ever written depends on what happens now: on decisions to be made this year as the world emerges from the covid-19 pandemic, and on our actions in the coming decade. Graham Lawton kicks off a special report on Earth's ecosystems and biodiversity at a critical juncture by asking: how can we deliver a rescue plan for nature that is also a rescue plan for us?

The article provides a systematization of mechanisms of state support for exports in the Russian Federation within the framework of the National Project “International Cooperation and Export”. It is shown that a complex multi-level export support system operates in the Russian Federation, including a wide range of financial and nonfinancial mechanisms. The mechanisms for transforming export support instruments in the context of the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic are revealed. Deepening and expanding integration within the framework of the EAEU is fixed as a key task in the foreign policy Concept of all member States of the Eurasian economic community. It is noted that joint efforts can more effectively deal with the consequences of the global economic crisis and, in fact, the global quarantine caused by the consequences of Covid–19. The Russian market is a significant part of the import supplies of industrial enterprises of the EAEU partners, removing any restrictions related to the size of the market. In modern conditions, it is advisable to develop export support mechanisms aimed primarily at providing targeted support to non-profit companies that are exposed to market risks, including those arising under the influence of the COVID–19 pandemic.

The article offers a classification of types of economic security and separately identifies foreign trade security as the most important element of the states economic security in the context of global escalation of trade contradictions in international trade. The essential characteristics of foreign trade security, characterized by permanent external influence, are revealed. Based on the identified features and characteristics, the definition of foreign trade security is given as a state of protection of exports and(or) imports from threats caused only by external influence, but not internal, in contrast to other types of economic security. It is shown that it is impossible to achieve the state of full provision of foreign trade security of the state in the conditions of participation in international economic relations. To resolve the contradiction between the goal of maximizing the effect of foreign trade activities and the simultaneous need to ensure security, we propose the formation of a scientifically-based system for ensuring foreign trade security and identify its main constituent elements.

Despite the recent increase in Sub-Saharan African newcomers to Canada, little is known about their experiences, specifically the challenges they face rebuilding their lives and the strategies they adopt to tackle these challenges. This scoping review of 48 articles provides a critical basis for further research on Sub-Saharan African international migration to Canada. Five themes emerged from the extant literature: 1) structural barriers to rebuilding self, family, and community; 2) limited support systems available in the transition period; 3) transnational ties and commitments as a recurring mediator of migrant life; 4) mechanisms for navigating transition and integration; and 5) changing gender relations and roles. Findings across these themes strongly project gender relations as a crucial engine of migrant life, yet studies do not extensively probe the nature and dynamics of key facets of post-migration gender relations. While transnational linkages could provide some support and sense of identity, the demands of and commitments to extended family members and other entities could stall or undermine efforts to rebuild lives and community in a new homeland. The coping mechanisms identified here appear to relieve or postpone the consequences of Sub-Saharan African migrants’ adaptations to the realities of life in Canada. Our review also underscores the need for strength-based approaches, such as resilience, in exploring the experiences of Sub-Saharan African migrants as newcomers in advanced Western nations like Canada. Future studies should consider that international migration presents complex challenges to both migrant sending and receiving countries, traceable to both localized and transnational historical and social linkages.

Global student mobility is growing in importance as students increasingly turn their interest worldwide. International student spouses and their personal experiences is an emerging problem of practice in higher education due to their connection to international student retention rates. In particular, what support systems are provided to this demographic is especially important. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to examine international student spouses’ perception of support services at an urban private institution of higher education in the United States. A qualitative approach addressed the following research question: What role do international student spouses perceive institutions of higher education have in terms of offering support services? This study focused on five international student spouses who came to the United States on F2 dependent visa status.
