The NCCN Guidelines for Survivorship provide screening, evaluation, and treatment recommendations for common physical and psychosocial consequences of cancer and cancer treatment to help healthcare professionals who work with survivors of adult-onset cancer in the posttreatment period. This portion of the guidelines describes recommendations regarding the management of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity and lymphedema. The burden of cardiac side effects in oncology patients will dramatically increase in the near future as a result of the widespread use of anticancer agents affecting the cardiovascular system, the general population aging, the heightened attention in the detection of cardiac toxicity and the absolute gain in terms of overall survival. The relationship between cardiologists and oncologists should therefore be closer leading to the definition of cardio-oncology. The increased number of such patients requires the creation of a dedicated patient assistance program in order to guarantee every patient the possibility of an interdisciplinary and multiprofessional approach. A dedicated care pathway needs a reorganization of internal resources to ensure high standards of care. The proposed pathway is actually active at our institution and has been implemented taking into account available facilities and planned work amount. Our patient cardio-oncology program could be adapted with minimal changes to different hospitals.

Objective: To discuss the toxic effects of therapy to the structure and function of the cardiovascular system and the role of the cardio-oncology team in the interprofessional care of adult patients, including current approaches, research findings, and future endeavors DATA SOURCE: Published articles and international cardiology and oncology association guidance documents., Conclusion: Although a new field of study, cardio-oncology is a rapidly expanding area of great clinical need. Evidence is only now accumulating, with most guidelines based on opinion or extrapolated from cardiovascular literature. Oncology care providers face complex decisions on a daily basis, whether before, during, or following definitive cancer treatments., Implications for Nursing Practice: In the era of both traditional and targeted cancer therapies, the long-term side effects to the cardiovascular system and, consequently, the needs of cancer survivors are increasingly complex. Accordingly, oncology nurses must not only be aware of such potential effects, but should conduct careful serial symptom review and consider risk-reduction and cancer rehabilitation strategies across the disease trajectory., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Cancer survivorship has been greatly impacted with the development of modern cancer treatments. While significant strides have been made in managing many types of cancer, now physicians face new challenges. Over the past decades, cardiovascular events in cancer survivors have increased in prevalence, driving the development of multidisciplinary cardio-oncology programs. Additionally, as cancer patients live longer, their risk of developing secondary cardiovascular events increases. The rapid development of novel cancer therapies will continue to generate questions of cardiac risk and cardiac protection in cancer patients over time. We wish to outline the development of cardio-oncology in its present state, and provide future perspectives for the discipline.
