BLACK humor , *MEDICAL personnel , *BRAIN death , *WIT & humor , *ETHNOLOGY - Abstract
In this article we propose to analyze how healthcare personnel involved in organ and tissue procurement activities use black humor during their daily work. The objective here is twofold: on the one hand, following previous studies, we are interested in showing the role of black humor as a way of dealing with death. On the other hand, we suggest that, in a parallel and complementary way, in this context black humor exposes a performative sense as a form of agency that attempts to modify an adverse reality. This work combines the methodological tools provided by ethnography and conducting open, multi-session interviews. The events revealed during the fieldwork and interviews that associate humor and brain death show the uses, limits and ways in which black humor operates in daily healthcare work of physical and emotional complexity. Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 has been the very high morbidity and mortality cause worldwide that has also affected the health personnel due to the nature characteristic of its work, many times under insecure conditions and with infection risk. Objective: To characterize health workers affected by covid-19 according to clinical and sociodemographic variables. Method: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 114 health workers with COVID-19 belonging to José Martí Pérez Teaching Polyclinic was carried out in Santiago de Cuba, in 2021. To pick up the information the database of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Department was revised and surveys were elaborated. Results: There was a prevalence of the female sex (78.0 %), aged 30 to 59 (83.3 %). The personal history of hypertension was present in 46.5% of those affected. The loss of smell was the most frequent symptom (53.5 %). Pneumonia (14.9 %) and fatigue (37.7%) were the complication and sequel that prevailed. Doctors represented 50.0% in the occupational profile and the most frequent infection area was the polyclinic (36.8 %). Conclusions: The clinical and sociodemographic characteristics found in health workers with COVID-19 showed that this personnel is vulnerable, reason why biosafety measures should be strictly followed. MEDICAL personnel , *GROWTH of children , *QUALITY of life , *SOCIAL enterprises , *ORAL hygiene , *NURSES' aides - Abstract
Introduction: Generating oral care and hygiene habits from an early age is critical in the development and growth of the child. Professionals such as pediatricians, nurses, and doctors have close contact with pregnant women and infants. Knowledge and attitudes towards oral health are essential in preventing oral diseases and their social impact on people's quality of life. Objective: To determine the knowledge and attitudes about early childhood oral health of pediatricians, doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants in a social enterprise in Cali, Colombia. Method: A descriptive study was conducted in 38 health-providing institutions in seven communes and two rural areas of Cali, applying a structured questionnaire-type instrument with 27 questions. Results: Seventy-four professionals participated; 35.8% presented regular knowledge about oral health, in addition to 87.8% with a good attitude towards the subject. Conclusions: The attitude towards health care and hygiene in childhood among health personnel in Cali, Colombia, is good. However, health personnel's knowledge of the topics could be improved. More similar studies are needed in other Colombian regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POST-traumatic stress , *MEDICAL personnel , *SYMPTOMS , *LATENT variables , *MEDICAL care - Abstract
Background: There has been growing concern regarding increasing levels of post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms experienced by healthcare workers (HCW) in the UK, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: PTS symptom typologies have been investigated in other adult populations using person-centred latent variable approaches, revealing profiles showing differing symptom levels and patterns. We aimed to explore typologies among clinical and non-clinical healthcare staff to elucidate heterogeneity of presentation. Methods: This was a retrospective study using referral data from treatment-seeking healthcare staff in the North of England (N = 1600). We employed latent profile analysis using the PTSD International Trauma Questionnaire domains as profile indicators. We included covariates relating to role-type, depression, anxiety and mental health concerns before March of 2020. Results: A model with six profiles fit the data best. Profile names were given as follows: ‘No symptom’; ‘Low symptom’; ‘Low symptom (moderate Sense of current threat (Th_dx) and Functional impairment (FI))’; ‘Moderate symptom (low Th_dx and high Avoidance (Av_dx))’; ‘Moderate symptom’; and ‘High symptom’. Covariates were shown to have differential predictive power on profile membership. Conclusions: The finding of profiles with pattern differences suggests a need for both differential and specifically targeted treatments, as well as a consideration of early intervention for those individuals with subclinical PTS symptoms. As expected, anxiety and depression were both predictors of several of the symptomatic profiles, with anxiety producing a larger effect. Further research is required [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RISK perception , *MEDICAL personnel , *ATTITUDES of medical personnel , *COVID-19 , *EMOTIONAL state - Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the perceived risk of COVID-19 infection among health personnel in Lima and Callao. We followed a qualitative approach with a reflexive thematic analysis design. Fifteen participants were interviewed. It was found that the perception of the risk of infection revolved around previous knowledge, the emotional state went from fear to calm. Likewise, the perception was affected by the sociocultural influence of the work environment, institutional, relational, beliefs and service vocation; as well as by personal experiences, which include risk situations and negative emotional charge. It is concluded that the perception of risk is centered on knowledge and emotions, related to social, cultural, and individual aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEALTH attitudes , *MEDICAL personnel , *HEALTH education , *PUBLIC health - Abstract
Introduction: Despite scientific advances, tuberculosis remains on the global and national epidemiological stage. Objective: To describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices about tuberculosis in health workers before and after an educational intervention in a health institution in Bogotá. Method: A quasi-experimental study was developed with a control group and an experimental group with measurement before and after an educational intervention between October 2021 and March 2022. A previously validated instrument was used to measure knowledge, attitudes and practices of tuberculosis. Results: This study demonstrated, post intervention, adequate knowledge on topics such as: disease transmission, treatment and isolation measures. At the level of attitudes, a false perception of safety against the disease on the part of the health worker was evident. Finally, some practices after the intervention improved in terms of the search for respiratory symptoms, separation of patients with cough and use of personal protection elements. Conclusions: Educational interventions in health workers are essential to improve knowledge, attitudes and practices about tuberculosis, for the benefit of workers and patients, contributing to reducing the transmission of the disease. MEDICAL personnel , *REPEATED measures design , *LIKERT scale , *HEALTH education , *MOTIVATION (Psychology) - Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a group-based educational intervention on healthcare professionals' engagement in physical exercise and their ability to prescribe it to their patients. Methodology: This study employed a pre-experimental design with repeated measures within a single group, comprising healthcare professionals (n = 17). Results: Among healthcare professionals, an increase in motivation towards engaging in physical exercise was observed (Likert scale, pre: 56 vs. 3 months: 61). The main motivation reported was maintaining good health, which showed an 18 % increase at the 6-month mark compared to the start of the study. However, a reduction was also identified in the weekly duration of moderate-intensity exercise (median, pre: 120 minutes [75-210], three months: 105 minutes [45-180], six months: 60 minutes [50-135]), as well as vigorous-intensity exercise (median, pre: 300 minutes [121.5-360], three months: 60 minutes [30-120], six months: 30 minutes [30-60]). The prescription of physical exercise improved in terms of frequency (pre: 23 %, three months: 36 %, six months: 30 %) and components, accompanied by a reduction in the number of minutes per week that patients engaged in exercise. Conclusions: A group-based educational intervention for healthcare professionals can positively influence certain attitudinal components in favor of their engaging in physical exercise and prescribing it to their patients. However, it negatively affects their actual exercise practice in both groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PUBLIC health personnel , *WORK environment , *MEDICAL personnel , *INSTITUTIONAL environment , *CIVIL service - Abstract
The objective of this review article is to determine, through a database, the level of the work climate of health personnel from public institutions in Latin America, generated through scientific publications from 2019 to 2022. The research is of descriptive quantitative character. A total of 1,069,976 articles found were obtained, leaving 12 articles through systematic purification as the final result. The results of this article show that, at the Latin American level, in eight of them (three from Mexico, two from Peru, two from Ecuador and one from Brazil) health professionals perceive an inadequate work environment, unlike the four remaining investigations (one from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile) that perceive an optimal work environment. And the factors that affect the work environment in health personnel as identified public servants are, in the first place, the remuneration factor, inadequate decision making, lack of leadership, lack of recognition and outstanding achievements. MEDICAL personnel , *PSYCHOLOGICAL resilience , *HOSPITAL medical staff , *WORK-life balance , *PSYCHOMETRICS , *HOSPITALS - Abstract
Introduction. Resilience is the capacity in which the qualities and resources of the individual help in the successful coping of adverse situations. Studying the construct of resilience requires seeing it as a process and not only a characteristic of the individual. Saavedra's resilient response is a model that fits this idea and explains resilience satisfactorily. Having a measuring instrument for health personnel working in hospitals would allow discovering its benefits as a protective factor in the workplace. Objective. Adapt and validate the Resilience Scale SV-RES in hospital health professionals in Mexico. Method. Based on recent research literature, including response models and modified and adapted items from the Resilience Scale SV-RES, a total of 909 health professionals responded. Distribution, factor analysis, and internal consistency tests were performed. Results. The process led to a scale of 28 items grouped into six factors with an overall internal consistency of (α = .908) and 50.5% of explained variance. Discussion and conclusion. The Resilience Scale SV-RES has adequate psychometric properties that make it appropriate to measure the resilience capacity of hospital health professionals in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LITERATURE reviews , *TERMINAL care , *MEDICAL personnel , *PALLIATIVE treatment , *THEMATIC analysis - Abstract
this integrative review of the literature aims to highlight and discuss the bioethical aspects of end-of-life patient care in the Brazilian context. Specifically, it seeks to identify the circumstances related to these bioethical aspects and their triggering factors. Publications by Brazilian authors published between 2014 and 2020 were selected. The search was conducted in October 2020 through PubMed and SciELO electronic databases. Of the 231 articles found, 24 were selected. Two categories comprising bioethical aspects emerged from the thematic analysis: "(not) dying with dignity" and "therapeutic obstinacy and futility." Six circumstances related to these bioethical aspects and 15 triggering factors were identified. The aspects were mainly associated with the non-acceptance of death, failures in the academic training of health professionals, and insufficient knowledge about palliative care concepts and practices. Therefore, integrating bioethics teaching in professional training and practice becomes fundamental for the care of patients at the end of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic , *DENTAL offices , *MEDICAL personnel , *DENTAL clinics , *DENTAL care - Abstract
Background: The Covid-19 pandemic involved the establishment of health emergency measures, among others, the suspension and subsequent progressive reopening of dental care. Purpose: Understand how health measures due to Covid-19 affected owners of dental offices and clinics in Bogotá, Colombia, and whether these aggravated the crisis of the profession. Methods: a qualitative study was conducted, interviewing seven dentists who owned dental clinics or offices. They investigated working conditions, economic changes, hiring conditions and the participation of professional organizations in the pandemic. Results: Dentistry was already in a crisis that was exacerbated by health measures in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Those interviewed did not perceive a quick leadership voice from government entities to establish care protocols. Administrative management is different according to the capabilities of dental clinics compared to private offices. Finally, the pandemic and mobility restrictions made it possible to establish improvements in time shared with the family; however, this affected the owners' income, leading them to seek other forms of income. Conclusions: Dentistry has been in crisis for many years, which was more evident with the confinement measures implemented to control the Covid-19 pandemic. There are differences in administrative management in favor of dental clinics that were essential in the context of the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic , *MEDICAL personnel , *MENTAL depression , *CONVENIENCE sampling (Statistics) , *PSYCHOLOGICAL resilience - Abstract
Objective. Report the prevalence of depression, resilience, and risk factors among healthcare workers (HCW) during Covid-19. Materials and methods. This is an observational cross-sectional study derived from the ongoing international, prospective multicentric study "The COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrk-Ers Study" (HEROES). A convenience sample of 2 127 HCW was obtained from Chiapas and Jalisco between May 19th and July 24th 2020. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire, resilience with the Brief Resilience Scale and a Covid risk scale was developed. Model-adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and an additive interaction model were performed. Results. Moderate-severe depression was found in 16.6% of HCW. Those from Jalisco, physicians, in hospitals, with chronic illness and mental health history were more depressed. The interaction between resilience and risk showed that, compared to those with no risk and medium/high resilience, HCW at risk with medium/high resilience had a 2.38 PR for depression while those at risk and low resilience had a PR of 5.83. Conclusion. This evidence points the need to develop strategies to enhance resilience and reduce the risk in HCW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL personnel , *INFECTIOUS disease transmission - Abstract
Objective. To assess the occupational factors associated with the occurrence of COVID-19 in health personnel who were exposed to different magnitudes of risk and who followed the United Nations crisis management policy for COVID-19. Methods. Cross-sectional survey conducted between April and May 2021. The low-risk group (LRG) were considered to be those who had minimal contact with patients; the medium-risk group (MRG) had contact with non-COVID-19 patients and did not perform instrumental airway intervention; and the high-risk group (HRG) were those who cared for COVID-19 patients and performed instrumental intervention with aerosol generation. Diagnosed COVID-19 disease and the presence of positive IgG antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 measured with Elecsys® anti-SARS-CoV-2 were considered as outcomes. Results. Outcome recorded in 43.8% of the LRG, versus 46.7% in the MRG (odds ratio [OR]: 1.125; 95% confidence interval [CI 95% ]: 0.896--1.414; p = 0.311), and 48.6% in the HRG (OR: 1,214; CI 95%: 0.964--1.530; p= 0.10). Conclusion. Belonging to the high-risk group and the medium-risk group, based on the degree of exposure to confirmed COVID-19 patients in the work area, was not associated with a higher occurrence of disease or seroconversion. MEDICAL personnel , *CHILD abuse , *MENTORING , *PROFESSIONAL employees - Abstract
The objective of this communication is to outline the key elements required to train health care providers in various occupations (medicine, psychology, dentistry, nursing, social work, nutrition, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chemistry, pharmacy, and obstetrics, including midwifery, among others) to address child sexual abuse (CSA) and develop care protocols grounded on evidence-based practices, as well as provide resources to optimize both processes. Training on child and adolescent sexual abuse is an essential component of facing this major challenge in Latin America and allowing health care personnel to fulfill their role of safeguarding the security and well-being of children and adolescents. Developing protocols helps health care staff define the roles and responsibilities of individual members, summarize potential red flags of CSA, and describe strategies to best identify and address the health and safety needs of patients and their families, which should include a trauma-informed approach. Future work should focus on developing and evaluating new strategies to increase the capacity of the health sector to care for children experiencing CSA and optimizing ways to train staff. Further aims should also include improving research and evidence generation on the epidemiology and care of CSA in Latin America, including of male children and adolescents, minorities, and priority groups (e.g., migrant children, children with disabilities, street children, youth deprived of liberty, indigenous communities and the LGBTQI+ community). HEALTH facilities , *ANTINEOPLASTIC agents , *POLLUTION , *INDUSTRIAL hygiene , *MEDICAL personnel - Abstract
Antineoplastic drugs (ANDs) used for chemotherapy can cause secondary cancers in treated patients and can pose carcinogenic risks to health-sector workers anywhere along these drugs' life cycle in a facility, from production to patient administration. Several PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centers (CCs) have experience addressing these hazards in the health sector. The objectives of this report are four-fold: 1) Provide an overview of longstanding research and prevention efforts, led by PAHO/WHO and its Occupational Health CCs, aimed at reducing the burden of occupational cancer in the Americas; 2) Discuss how robust AND exposure assessment and educational/outreach work by PAHO CCs can form the basis of exposure mitigation efforts among health-sector workers; 3) Through the presentation of original AND exposure assessment data from a pharmaceutical compounding facility in Chile, highlight relatively inexpensive methods by which such data can be generated; and 4) Discuss how effective, periodic environmental surveillance in healthcare facilities results in the identification of AND contamination in the work environment and enables the implementation of low-cost, high-impact interventions to reduce the risk of occupational cancer in health-sector workers, including in limited-resource settings. The risk of health-sector worker exposure to ANDs and other hazardous drugs is an important issue for inclusion within PAHO/WHO's broader efforts at reducing the impact of occupational cancer in the Americas. This report demonstrates that a wide range of accessible AND-exposure mitigation strategies are feasible at both a facility and a national policy level across the hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHOLOGICAL safety , *MEDICAL personnel , *PSYCHOLOGICAL tests , *COVID-19 pandemic - Abstract
In the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to attend to health personnel in a particular way, through the management of their psychological safety, a concept that requires updating for its use in this circumstance. To do this, a critical assessment of the Psychological Safety construct is carried out and a new perspective for its study is proposed. It is concluded that the new proposed perspective complements and expands the limits of psychological safety assuming it as a personological configuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To analyze the narratives of those who work in public hospitals in the Buenos Aires suburbs, about their experiences in the care and care of people living with a chronic non-communicable disease, focusing on the difficulties and obstacles that emerge in the context of covid-19 pandemic. Methodology: 13 in-depth interviews were conducted during the months of May and August 2021, using a script of questions/topics and virtually. In the analysis, we started from the narrative approach to reconstruct the way in which the actors produce, represent and contextualize their experiences. Results: On the one hand, temporary obstacles were defined, such as the fear of people with this type of disease to go out and go to a hospital, the closure of outpatient clinics and the concentration of workers and workers, and resources for the care of the covid-19 pandemic; on the other, structural problems --promoted by the epidemic--, such as the intermittent availability of medication, the difficulties of articulating with other institutions/levels of care, the access or not of patients to public transport and their possibility or not of paying for other transport. Conclusion: During the pandemic, the work was focused, both materially and symbolically, on the containment of covid-19 cases. Follow-up, diagnosis and care of chronic non-communicable diseases were postponed. The current challenge is to attend to the new socioepidemiological reality that is configured when the sars-Cov-2 virus decreases its circulation and severity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL personnel , *WORK-related injuries , *WORK structure , *NIGHT work , *WORKING hours - Abstract
Workplace accidents in health personnel occur as a consequence of work organization stressors. These stressors affect job satisfaction and productivity. The objective of this review is to report the scientific evidence on the relationship between workplace accidents and work organization stressors in health personnel, from the perspective of safety and health at work. In the collection of information, 190 articles were initially identified, of which seven were excluded due to duplication; 183 titles and abstracts were reviewed, discarding 139 of them. Then, 44 complete studies were reviewed, discarding 17. Finally, 27 studies that met the eligibility criteria were included in the review. In the health sector, workplace accidents are linked to factors such as overload, long work hours and night shifts, which negatively affect the health and well-being of health workers. The stressors of work organization, specifically work overload, the lack or insufficiency of human resources psiand extended working hours, are the main cause of work-related accidents in health personnel. Therefore, it is necessary to implement prevention and control management strategies aimed at improving the health and well-being of health workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: cognitive accessibility is part of the overall accessibility framework. Cognitive accessibility means that services are simple, coherent, clear, multimodal, error tolerant and focused, taking into account all users. Aims: to validate a questionnaire on cognitive accessibility to be applied to health professionals. Methods: the study has a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental and cross-sectional design, developed in the period between March and June 2022. The sample consisted of 130 health professionals in Argentina, selected by means of purposive sampling. Results: the validation process was carried out in three stages. The analysis of internal consistency (reliability) was performed through Cronbach’s Alpha. The descriptive results with the 17 items showed a variance of each item of 4,445, a total variance of 13,049, with a total Cronbach’s Alpha of 0,701, showing that the instrument presents internal consistency. Conclusions: it was possible to verify that the scores of both Cronbach’s Alpha and the factorial analysis, allow affirming that the instrument has the necessary metric aspects to be used in future research, taking into account that the instrument had a previous evaluation by expert criteria. It can be considered that this article becomes the starting point for future studies, in which it is intended to continue the line of research, which allows the analysis of cognitive accessibility in the context of health professionals.
