Graphical abstract In this study, 42 Wistar albino male rats (n = 42, 8 weeks old) were used. Rats were divided into 6 groups and 7 rats included each group. Histopathological analyses were also performed on the muscle tissue. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) analyses were determined by a spectrophotometer. According to the obtained results, Bcl-2, TNF-α and IL1-α protein expression was increased in damage groups compared to the control and royal jelly groups, while Caspase-3, Caspase-6 and Bax protein expression levels decreased in damage groups. MDA level increased in damage groups compared to the control and royal jelly groups, while CAT and GSH levels increased with royal jelly application in royal jelly-given group in comparison to the flouride-exposed group. According to histopathological analysis results, edema and inflammatory cell formations were found in the injury groups, a tendency to decrease in these injuries was observed in the treatment groups. Based on these results, we can say that royal jelly has protective effects on muscle tissue against fluoride damage.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of ellagic acid (EA) in the treatment of pancreatic injury. EA has been found to have strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticancer properties. The effects of EA on pancreati˜c star cell (PSC) activation and cell functions have been evaluated and it has been shown that it inhibits the activation of basic cell functions and PSCs and. it has antidiabetic activity through its effect on β-pancreas cells. In this work, 36 Wistar albino rats (n = 36, 8 weeks old) were used. Rats were divided to 4 groups and 9 rats were each group. Groups: Group 1: control group; Group 2: EA group; Group 3: carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) group; Group 4: EA + CCl4 group. Animals were decapitated after 8 weeks and their pancreas tissue samples were taken and researched. In pancreas tissue, NF-κB, TNF-α, Nrf-2, VEGF, Bcl-2, caspase-3, and Akt proteins expression ratios were analyzed by western blotting method, CAT activity and GSH levels were determined by spectrophotometer and ROS production was detected by MDA. In our results, the Nrf-2 and caspase-3 protein expressions, catalase activities and GSH levels increased, TNF-α, NF-κB, Bcl-2, VEGF, and Akt protein expressions and MDA levels reduced in EA + CCl4 group comparable to the CCl4 group. These findings reveal that EA decreases pancreas tissue injury in rats and that EA may also be used as a drug against pancreas tissue injury in the future.

The hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the fifth known form of viral hepatitis and was first recognized as the cause of an epidemic of unexplained acute hepatitis in the early 1980s. Globally, it is one of the most frequent causes of acute viral hepatitis. The majority of HEV infections are asymptomatic and lead to the spontaneous clearance of the virus. Among the eight different genotypes identified to date, HEV genotype 1 (HEV1), HEV2, HEV3, and HEV4 are the most frequent genotypes causing infections in humans. HEV1 and HEV2 are prevalent in developing regions and able to result in large-scale outbreaks originating from contaminated water supplies. They are also responsible for severe hepatitis in pregnant patients and infants. In contrast, HEV3 and HEV4 are zoonotic, and the transmission of these genotypes to humans occurs mainly through the fecal contamination of water and consumption of contaminated meat from infected animals. Their main reservoir is the pig, and they are mostly encountered in developed countries. The major risk groups for HEV infection and its ensuing adverse consequences are pregnant women, infants, older people, immunocompromised individuals, patients with underlying chronic liver diseases, and workers that come into close contact with HEV-infected animals. In the clinical perspective, HEV infections have diverse clinical manifestations including acute and self-limiting hepatitis, acute-on-chronic liver disease, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Although HEV mainly results in acute self-limiting infection, chronic HEV infection may occur among immunocompromised patients (e.g., solid-organ transplant recipients). Additionally, HEV-associated extrahepatic manifestations involving various organs have been reported in the last decade, although the causal link for many of them still needs to be proven. Ribavirin and interferon-alpha are the most widely used agents for the treatment of HEV infections with a certain level of success. However, ribavirin is contraindicated in pregnant patients, and interferon-alpha cannot be used in most transplant recipients. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel antiviral compounds that are safe and effective particularly for patients having contraindications for ribavirin or interferon-alpha and infected by the ribavirin-resistant HEV. In this review article, a literature search using PubMed and MEDLINE databases was performed, up to March 2020. Only the articles published in English were reviewed.

The goal of this study was to determine the protective role of ellagic acid (EA) against CCl4-induced muscle injury in rats. In this study, 36 Wistar albino rats (n = 36, 8 weeks old) were used. The rats were divided into 4 groups and 9 rats were included each group. Groups: (i) control Group: standard diet; (ii) EA Group: standard diet + EA group; (iii) CCl4 group: standard diet + CCl4 group; (iv) EA + CCl4 group: standard diet + EA + CCl4. The animals were decapitated after 8 weeks, and their muscle tissues were received and investigated. In the muscle tissue, TNF-α, COX-2, Nrf-2, NF-kB, caspase-3 and bcl-2 expression levels were analyzed by the western blotting technique, lipid peroxidation was detected by MDA (malondialdehyde), and catalase and GSH levels were determined by a spectrophotometer. In our findings, in comparison to the CCl4 group, in the EA + CCl4 group, the Nrf-2 and caspase-3 protein expression levels, GSH and catalase activities increased, while the NF-kB, bcl-2, TNF-α and COX-2 protein expression levels and MDA levels decreased. These results suggest that EA reduces muscle tissue damage rate in rats and that EA may also be used as a potential drug to protect against muscle tissue damage in the future.

Phytochemicals is considered one of the most effective and safe alternative therapy against oxidative linked lung diseases. Ellagic acid (EA), an important component of fruits, nuts, and vegetables, are partly responsible for their beneficial health effects against oxidation-related diseases. In the present study, we investigated the ameliorative effect of EA on lung damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in Wistar male albino rats. Thirty-six male rats (n = 36, 8-week old) were divided into 4 groups, each with 9 rats. The groups were: Control group: received standard diet; EA group: administered with EA (10 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal); CCl4 group: administered with CCl4 (1.5 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal); EA+CCl4 group: administered with EA and CCl4. . The rats were decapitated at the end of experimental period of 8 weeks and the lung tissues were examined. CCl4-induced rats showed elevation in the expressions of inflammatory proteins, nuclear factor kappa b (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α); and the indicator of lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA). Intraperitoneal administration of EA significantly reduced the levels of these markers. EA administration increased the protein expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2) and enhanced the activity of glutathione (GSH) and catalase enzyme (CAT). In addition, EA administration increased the expression levels of the executioner protein of apoptosis, caspase-3, and decreasing pro-survival protein, B cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2). In conclusion, these results establishes the protective role of EA in the treatment of lung damage and that in the future, this may have the potential to be used as a medication for the prevention or attenuation of lung diseases.

Royal jelly is known to strengthen memory, provide antioxidative, antidiabetic, antitumor, anticancer, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive. In this study, 42 rats (n = 42) were used, and these rats were divided into 6 groups of 7 rats each. Groups: (i) Control Group: Group fed with standard diet; (ii) Royal Jelly (RJ) Group: RJ (100 mg/kg CA, gavage); (iii) F50 Group: Fluoride (50 mg/kg CA, drinking water); (iv) F100 Group: F (100 mg/kg CA, drinking water); (v) F50 + RJ Group: F (50 mg/kg CA, drinking water) + RJ (100 mg/kg CA, gavage); (vi) F100 + RJ Group: F (100 mg/kg CA, drinking water) + RJ (100 mg/kg CA, gavage). The rats were decapitated after 8 weeks, and their heart tissues were taken and examined. Lipid peroxidation by MDA (malondialdehyde) analyzes, GSH (glutathione) level and catalase activity were determined by spectrophotometer. Protein expression levels of caspase-3, caspase-6, caspase-9, Bcl-2, Bax, BDNF, GSK-3, Nrf-2 and NF-κB proteins in heart tissue were determined by western blotting technique and hearth tissue evaluated by histopathologically. As a result, MDA levels, Bcl-2, GSK-3 and NF-κB protein expression levels were reduced, whereas GSH levels, caspase-3, caspase-9, caspase-6, Bax, BDNF and Nrf-2 protein levels were increased in the F50 + RJ and F100 + RJ groups compared to the F50 and F100 groups. According to the results of this study, it has been concluded that Royal jelly has the potential to be developed into a drug for treatment of heart diseases in addition to providing protection against heart damage.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an apheresis procedure in which plasma is separated from the blood cellular components ex vivo, allocated, and replaced with another plasma or a plasma-replacing fluid. This study aimed to define the rate of complications and determine TPE distribution in various neurological diseases. Our study is a retrospective analysis of neurologic diseases requiring TPE between 2008 and 2019 that were selected using the medical records of neurology departments and apheresis units database. We performed 1459 TPE procedures on 207 patients between 2008 and 2019. TPE Procedure is most frequently applied in patients with Myasthenia-Gravis syndrome (34.7%). The complication ratio was 1.6% from a total of 1459 TPE procedures. The most commonly specified adverse event was allergic reactions 11 (5.3%), followed by hypotension 6 (2.9%). TPE was safe and tolerable, with manageable complications in experienced hands.

Phytochemicals, bioactive food compounds, found in plants have been described as protective agents against renal injury. This work was planned to evaluate the effects of EA on anti-oxidative and anti-inflammation pathways in kidney damage induced with carbon tetrachloride. In this study, experimental animals (n = 36, 8 weeks old rats) were divided into 4 groups as follows: 1) Control group 2) EA group (10 mg/kg body weight) 3) CCl4 group (1.5 ml/kg, body weight) 4) EA + CCl4 group. The potentially protective effect of EA on kidney damage exposed by CCl4 in rats were evaluated. EA administration protects CCl4 induced kidney damage against oxidative stress through its antioxidant protection. Treatment of EA significantly reduced lipid peroxidation and improved glutathione and catalase enzyme activity. Recently studies showed that EA activated caspase-3 and nuclear transcription factor erythroid 2 related factor driven antioxidant signal pathway and protected the kidney against damage induced by oxidative stress. Furthermore, EA also markedly decreased the level of cyclooxygenase-2, the vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and suppressed the protein synthesis of nuclear factor-kappa-B. This study reveals that EA has kidney protective effect against CCl4 induced oxidative damage and inflammation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective role of ellagic acid (EA) on CCl4 -induced brain injury in rats. In this study, the rats were divided into four groups. Groups: (1) Control group; (2) EA group; (3) CCl4 group; (4) EA + CCl4 group. In brain tissue, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa b (NF-kB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear erythroid related factor 2 (Nrf-2), cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase-3), VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and B-cell lymphoma-2 (bcl-2) protein expression levels were analyzed by western blotting. MDA (malondialdehyde), catalase enzyme activity (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) analysis were determined by spectrophotometer. In our findings, EA ameliorated Nrf-2 and caspase-3 protein expression levels, GSH and catalase activities, NF-kB, TNF-α, VEGF, Bcl-2, COX-2 protein expression levels and MDA levels in CCl4 intoxicated rats. These results suggest that EA demonstrated the neuroprotective effect on CCl4 -induced brain damage in rats. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ellagic acid has different biological activities, these are; antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, antifibrosis, anticancer, neuroprotective and hepatoprotective. For example it was reported that EA protects the cells against DNA injury induced by free radicals and it can prevent the traumatic brain injury. These results obtained from this study reveals that EA has a protective effect against rat brain damage and it may be used as an alternative drugs for the brain injury treatment in future.

The present study aims to examine the protective effects of C60 fullerene (C60), Curcumin (CUR;Curcuma longa), C60 + CUR combination against oxidative stress, apoptosis, and changes in cellular level in kidney tissue of diabetic rats. Treatment practices were administered separately to groups for 8 weeks following the approval of diabetes induction. It was observed that the treatment groups had increased antioxidant potential, decreased oxidative stress levels, decreased cholesterol, alpha tocopherol, retinol levels along with improved important changes in fatty acid metabolism compared with the diabetic group. C60, CUR, and C60 + CUR were also determined to act in the direction of reducing kidney damage by activating apoptotic pathways. It can be concluded based on these findings that C60, CUR, and especially C60 + CUR combination has beneficial properties in maintaining kidney tissue and function by effectively preventing oxidative stress, apoptotic changes, and changes at the cellular level in kidney tissue under hyperglycemia conditions. Practical applications C60 and CUR have various biological activities which can be indicated as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective. It has been reported that C60 and CUR protect the cells against oxidative injury brought about by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Data acquired from the present study puts forth that C60 and C60 + CUR may be promising agents to prevent damage induced by hyperglycemic conditions in kidney tissue. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) used by cancer patients to cope with chemotherapy-induced constipation, and attitudes of the patients toward CAM. Methods This descriptive study was conducted in an adult oncology unit of a university hospital with 214 cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Data were collected with the Patient Identification Form and Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (HCAMQ). Results Of the participants, 21.5% had information about CAM, the main source of information was the internet and social media (54.8%), and 31.8% used CAM in coping with chemotherapy-induced constipation. The most common method was phytotherapy (97.1%). The most commonly used herb was apricot (39.4%); the HCAMQ mean score was 34.3 (±4.6). Conclusion Cancer patients frequently use CAM to cope with chemotherapy-induced constipation and the most common CAM used by patients is phytotherapy.

To compare the potential protective effects of conventional and colon-targeted lycopene (TLC) and linalool (TLN) on acetic acid (AA)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in rats. In this study, waste metal chips were transformed into metal matrix composites by isostatic hot pressing and the vibrational behavior of these composite materials was investigated. Bronze chips (CuSn10) was used as a matrix component and spheroidal cast iron (GGG40) chips were used as reinforcement component. The metal matrix composites are produced with different GGG40 contents as 40%-30%-20% and 10%. Metal chips were pressed at pressure of 170 MPa and a temperature of 450 °C during production. The results of natural frequency and modal stiffness were evaluated on the basis of mixture ratios by applying the impact hammer test to the metal matrix composite materials produced.

WOS: 000429775000020, PubMed ID: 28301907, Adherence to non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) is an important factor for ensuring efficacy and safety in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). There are controversial results regarding NOAC adherence in real-world data and there are no data about NOAC adherence in Turkish population. This study investigated the NOAC adherence based on self-report, factors affecting nonadherence, and the relation of the adherence level with efficacy and safety outcomes. This multicenter cross-sectional study included 2738 patients (59% female) using NOAC (dabigatran, apixaban, and rivaroxaban) due to NVAF for more than 3 months with >30 days of supply between September 1, 2015, and February 28, 2016. To measure the adherence level, an 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale was used. The mean age of the patients was 70 +/- 10 years. Of the 2738 patients, 44% were receiving dabigatran, 38% rivaroxaban, and 18% apixaban. A total of 630 (23%) patients had high medication adherence, 712 (26%) moderate adherence, and 1396 (51%) low adherence. Nonadherence had related to stroke (5.6% vs 2.5%, P < .001) and minor (21.2% vs 11.1%, P < .001) and major (6.1% vs 3.7%, P = .004) bleeding rates. The adherence to NOAC was found to be quite low in Turkey. Nonadherence is associated with bleeding and thromboembolic cardiovascular events. Age, taking NOAC twice a day, and the additional noncardiac diseases, depression, and dementia were the independent factors affecting poor medication adherence.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Since dietary factors have been connected to a reduced risk of a diversity of human cancers, in this study we investigated the effects of tomato powder (TP) on the development of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal cancer in Wistar rats, and possible mechanism(s) by which TP shows its chemopreventive activity. Here we show that TP added to feed at 5% rate decreases the rate of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and reduces the development of adenocarcinoma and growth of AOM-induced colorectal cancer in rats. In addition, we demonstrate that TP supplementation shows its chemopreventive activities through inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression via NF-κB pathway and promotion of apoptosis, as well as regulating Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway in colorectal tissue of AOM-treated rats. Our findings identify an intimate connection between dietary supplementation of TP and the decreased risk of colorectal cancer in rats, and suggest that consumption of TP would be a natural candidate for the prevention of colorectal cancer in men.

A novel nutritional supplement complex (N21 #125) composed of four well-known compounds (chromium picolinate, phosphatidylserine, docosahexaenoic acid, and boron) was designed to improve memory function and maintain brain health. The present study evaluated the complex's potential mechanism of action and its role in reducing oxidative stress in the brain of obese rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD).Male Wistar rats (n = 40, 8-week-old) were divided into four groups. Group I was fed a standard diet; Group II was fed a standard diet and supplemented with N21 } Group III was fed an HFD; and Group IV was fed an HFD and supplemented with N21 #125 for 12 weeks.Rats fed HFD had greater serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and brain malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations than rats fed the control diet. Supplementation of N21 #125 decreased CRP, TNF-α, and MDA concentration in rats fed HFD. The levels of brain nuclear factor-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase, extracellular signal-regulated kinases and protein kinase B were lower in rats fed the control diet than for rats fed the HFD. These parameters were increased by supplementation of N21 #125.The data indicate that N21 #125 protected the brain from oxidative damage and inflammation induced by the HFD. This effect may be through up-regulation of the transcription factor Nrf2 expression.

In the current study it was aimed to investigate the toxicity of low doses of imidacloprid (IMI) on the reproductive organ systems of adult male rats. The treatment groups received 0.5 (IMI-0.5), 2 (IMI-2) or 8 mg IMI/kg body weight by oral gavage (IMI-8) for three months. The deterioration in sperm motility in IMI-8 group and epidydimal sperm concentration in IMI-2 and IMI-8 groups and abnormality in sperm morphology in IMI-8 were significant. The levels of testosterone (T) and GSH decreased significantly in group IMI-8 compared to the control group. Upon treatment with IMI, apoptotic index increased significantly only in germ cells of the seminiferous tubules of IMI-8 group when compared to control. Fragmentation was striking in the seminal DNA from the IMI-8 group, but it was much less obvious in the IMI-2 one. IMI exposure resulted in elevation of all fatty acids analyzed, but the increases were significant only in stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidonic acids. The ratios of 20:4/20:3 and 20:4/18:2 were decreased and 16:1n-9/16:0 ratio was increased. In conclusion, the present animal experiments revealed that the treatment with IMI at NOAEL dose-levels caused deterioration in sperm parameters, decreased T level, increased apoptosis of germ cells, seminal DNA fragmentation, the depletion of antioxidants and change in disturbance of fatty acid composition. All these changes indicate the suppression of testicular function.

Aims Cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity is associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines in the kidney. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumorigenic properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of EGCG on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and potential mechanisms by which it enhances antioxidant activities and resolves inflammation after EGCG treatment during cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Main methods Twenty-eight rats were divided into four groups as control (group 1; no treatment; n = 7), EGCG (group 2; n = 7), cisplatin (group 3; n = 7) or cisplatin and EGCG (group 4; n = 7). After 2 days of EGCG treatment at a dose of l00 mg/kg BW, rats were treated with a single i.p. injection of cisplatin (7 mg/kg BW). On day 12 (10 days after the cisplatin treatment), all rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The level of protein was examined by Western blotting. Key findings Cisplatin caused a significant decrease in the expression nuclear levels of NF-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1(HO-1), and an increase in the levels of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB p65) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) an oxidative stress marker. EGCG supplementation significantly improved the changes associated with cisplatin nephrotoxicity by increasing levels of Nrf-2 and HO-1, and decreasing levels of NF-κB and HNE. Renal activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) and glutathione were significantly lower in cisplatin-treated rats compared with control rats, and EGCG treatment significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione ( P Significance The results suggest that Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway may be the primary target for prevention of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by EGCG, and that reduces it inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB.

Cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity is related to an increase in lipid peroxidation, oxygen-free radicals, and inflammation in kidney. Zinc is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory action. To date, the protective role of zinc picolinate on cisplatin-induced renal injury has not been investigated. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of zinc picolinate on cisplatin-induced renal injury.Male Wistar rats (n = 28, 8-week-old, weighing 200 to 220 g) were divided into four groups consisting of 7 rats each: control, zinc picolinate (6 mg Zn kg(-1) BW i.p.), cisplatin (7 mg kg(-1)BW i.p., single dose) and cisplatin plus zinc picolinate.A single dose of cisplatin resulted in an increase in malondialdehyde, 8-isoprostane, and tumor necrosis factor-α levels of kidney and significantly deranged renal function (urea-N and creatinine; P.0001). Zinc picolinate treatment significantly reduced urea-N, creatinine, malondialdehyde, 8-isoprostane, and tumor necrosis factor-α -α levels. Concentration of zinc in kidney was increased significantly after zinc picolinate supplementation; however, Fe and Cu levels did not change. Expression of Bax in kidney increased with cisplatin administration, and this could be prevented by zinc picolinate treatment (P.001). However, bcl-2 expression did not change by zinc or cisplatin treatment (P.05). The expression of heat shock proteins 60 and 70 in kidney was increased after cisplatin treatment compared with the levels in the control (P.01), and this increase could be prevented by the zinc picolinate treatment (P.05).These results suggest that zinc picolinate may be a potential preventive agent in cisplatin-induced renal injury through decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Background : Pomegranate juice has a number of positive effects on both human and animal subjects. Material and methods : Four groups were used in this study. i: Control group, ii: H2O2 group, iii: Pomegranate juice (PJ) group and iv: PJ + H2O2 group. Following the sterilization method for pomegranate juice (10%) and H2O2 (6% v/v), Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultures were added and the cultivation incubated at 35°C for 72 hours.
