Objective To evaluate the number and characteristics of papers on MR imaging written by radiologists in Spain and published in 2001–2007 Medline-indexed journals, including a comparison with the MR research output from German radiological departments. Materials and methods Specific search profiles were devised to retrieve items from the Medline database. Relationship with the topic and major thematic areas of the articles, publication year, journal, language of publication, and mean impact factors were analyzed. Spanish and the German institutions with the highest MR productivity were identified. Also, the number of articles from Spain and Germany published in their respective official journals (Radiologia and ROFO) was recorded. Results There were 332 Spanish articles published in 101 different journals. The higher number of papers was published in Spanish radiology and non-radiology journals (n = 105, 32%, mean IF: 0.191). The journal with the higher number of articles was Radiologia (n = 51, 15%). “Neuroradiology” was the most frequent topic (n = 139, 42%). The Spanish productivity on MR imaging was yearly stable (p = 0.67), with the higher percentage of papers (17%) published in 2006. The topic with the higher IF was “neuroradiology” (IF: 2.317). There were no yearly variations for the three major thematic areas (“Neuro imaging”: p = 0.64; “Body imaging”: p = 0.91; and “Non-clinical miscellanea”: p = 0.46). The highest number of MR publications was found in two Spanish institutions (Dr. Peset University Hospital and Vall d’Hebron Hospital) (both, n = 28, 8%). In comparison, there were 1681 articles on MR imaging from Germany, having the two most productive institutions more than 150 papers in this period (University Hospital Essen and Eberhard-Karls University of Tubingen). The adjusted number of articles per million populations was 20.4 for Germany and 8.1 for Spain. A total of 395 (23%) articles originating from Germany were published in the official German radiological journal ROFO. The percentage of articles originating from Spain and Germany published in their respective official journals was statistically different. Discussion Spanish radiologists published approximately two-third of their MR articles in several non-Spanish journals, while the official Spanish radiological journal Radiologia leads the ranking of Spanish journals. Spanish radiologists are mainly active in the “neuroradiology” topic. The Spanish healthcare sector is the most active. German institutions published more in their official journal ROFO.

To retrospectively evaluate the number of articles on cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging written by authors from radiology and cardiology departments and published in Medline-indexed journals from 1999 to 2004 and the relationship between the author's specialty and various parameters.Specific search profiles were devised to retrieve items from the Medline database. Eight hundred seven articles were included in the study. Relationships between the author's specialty (radiology or cardiology) and several evaluated parameters were analyzed and compared by using chi(2) statistics.Four hundred eight (50.5%) of 807 publications were from cardiologists, and 399 (49.5%) of 807 were from radiologists. Articles most commonly originated from the United States (n = 270, 53% from radiologists) and Germany (n = 178, 66% from radiologists). Developing techniques (n = 248, 64% from radiologists, P.001) was the most frequent topic. Results of clinical trials, controlled clinical trials, and randomized controlled trials were published mainly by cardiologists (67%, P = .03; 70%, P = .2; 86%, P = .008, respectively). A majority of articles were published in cardiology journals (n = 269, 83% from cardiologists, P.001) and radiology journals (n = 249, 82% from radiologists, P.001).The number of publications on cardiac MR imaging written by radiologists and that written by cardiologists was essentially the same.

Introduccion y objetivos El presente estudio analiza los patrones de colaboracion de los investigadores y las instituciones en los trabajos publicados en Revista Espanola de Cardiologia. Metodos Se identificaron las coautorias y relaciones de colaboracion institucional de Revista Espanola de Cardiologia en el periodo 2000-2005 y se obtuvo el indice de firmas/trabajo. Para construir las redes de colaboracion se utilizaron los programas «TextToPajek» y «PAJEK ». Resultados Se analizaron 980 trabajos, el 95,1% firmado en coautoria por 2 o mas autores y el 51,43% en colaboracion institucional. El indice de firmas/trabajo ha sido de 6,23 ± 3,1. Se encontro una relacion estadistica (p Conclusiones El analisis de las redes de colaboracion ha permitido identificar numerosas agrupaciones de autores del area cardiovascular en Espana, asi como las relaciones existentes entre ellas desde el punto de vista de la investigacion y las publicaciones cientificas. El aspecto mas significativo de la colaboracion institucional fue el predominio de la colaboracion intrainstitucional e intraautonomica (el 80,57% de las colaboraciones). Posibles estudios futuros podrian incluir el analisis de la produccion cientifica de los investigadores de las agrupaciones identificadas y la evolucion en el tiempo de los patrones de colaboracion.

Many abstracts submitted to medical meetings never come to full publication in peer-reviewed journals. From the 2,992 abstracts presented at the 1994-1998 Spanish Congresses of Radiology, 464 (15%) were published as full articles in journals covered by the Medline and IME (Indice Medico Espanol), the Spanish medical database. The publication rate of oral presentations was higher than that of posters (18% versus 13%). Collaboration between radiologists and clinicians and between radiologists from different institutions increased full publication (21% and 27%, respectively) compared to abstracts from just one institution (14%). Therefore, oral presentations, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional collaboration in the abstract predicted full publication.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the hypothetical changes in the 2001 impact factor of 52 radiological journals included in the Science Citation Index–Journal Citation Reports by also counting cites proceeding from 73 Spanish journals on different medical specialties. Also, to estimate the possible impact factor of the official Spanish radiology journal, Radiologia , not included in this database. Materials and methods: A modified 2001 impact factor of 52 radiological journals and Radiologia was obtained by adding the number of cites in 1999 and 2000 from the medical Spanish journals. Data were obtained by consulting the 2001 edition of the Journal Citation Reports in the ‘Web of Science’ database. Results: The 16,985 bibliographical references were analysed (232 of them to radiological journals). The journal with the largest increase in its 2001 impact factor (from 1.83 to 1.90) was Radiologic Clinics of North America . European Journal of Radiology was the European journal with the highest increase (from 1.084 to 1.110) in the difference between the 2001 modified and original impact factor. The modified 2001 impact factor of the 34 American journals was statistically higher ( P = 0.016) than that of the 18 European journals (1.64 versus 0.93). Differences between the 2001 modified and original impact factor were slightly higher in the American journals (no statistically significant difference). The 2001 impact factor of Radiologia was 0.056. Discussion: Differences between the 2001 original and modified impact factor were small, but larger in the American journals. The 2001 impact factor of Radiologia was modest, although similar to other publications included in the Journal Citation Reports.

The aim of this paper is to present the bibliometric indicators for Revista Espanola de Cardiologia that were obtained from the “Potential impact factor of Spanish medical journals in 2001” study financed by the Spanish Ministerio de Educacion, Cultura y Deporte. Citations to Revista Espanola de Cardiologia , its national and international impact factor, and its immediacy index were calculated with methods similar to those used by the Institute for Scientific Information. National indicators were based only on citations from 87 Spanish journals considered source journals, whereas international indicators were calculated on the basis of citations from both national journals and foreign source journals in the Science Citation Index. Revista Espanola de Cardiologia obtained a national impact factor of 0.719 and an international impact factor of 0.837, placing it at the head of the ranking of Spanish medical journals.

Introduction and objectives. The impact factor for non-Spanish journals devoted to different specialties was normalized for the number of papers published. Results. 967 articles were analyzed (301 on cardiac imaging, 666 on radiology). In the former specialty, 50.5% of the items were published in REVISTA ESPANOLA DE CARDIOLOGIA, and in the latter, 55.1% were published in Radiologia (no statistically significant difference). El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los indicadores bibliometricos de Revista Espanola de Cardiologia obtenidos del estudio «Factor de impacto potencial de las revistas medicas espanolas en 2001», financiado por el Ministerio de Educacion Cultura y Deporte espanol. Siguiendo una metodologia similar a la que emplea el Institute for Scientific Information, se han obtenido las citas de Revista Espanola de Cardiologia y su factor de impacto e indice de inmediatez nacionales e internacionales. Los indicadores nacionales tienen en cuenta unicamente las citas procedentes de 87 revistas espanolas seleccionadas como fuentes, mientras que para el calculo de los indicadores internacionales se han sumado a las citas anteriores las que proceden de las revistas fuente extranjeras del Science Citation Index. Revista Espanola de Cardiologia ha obtenido un factor de impacto nacional de 0,719 y un factor de impacto internacional de 0,837, lo que la situa en posiciones de liderazgo en la medicina espanola

Introduccion y objetivos El proposito de este estudio es realizar un analisis comparativo de la productividad de los autores espanoles en articulos sobre diagnostico por la imagen en el periodo 1994-1998 en: a) las revistas oficiales de 2 sociedades medicas espanolas, la de Cardiologia (R EVISTA E SPANOLA DE C ARDIOLOGIA ) y la de Radiologia Medica (Radiologia), y b) revistas extranjeras sobre las especialidades incluidas en Journal Citation Reports. Material y metodo Para la recuperacion de los articulos se disenaron perfiles de busqueda especificos para las bases de datos IME y MEDLINE, y se valoro en las revistas extranjeras el factor de impacto por especialidad normalizado al numero de trabajos publicados. Resultados Se analizaron 967 trabajos, 301 sobre imagen diagnostica cardiovascular (el 50,5% publicado en R EVISTA E SPANOLA DE C ARDIOLOGIA ) y 666 sobre radiodiagnostico (el 55,1% publicado en Radiologia), con diferencias que no fueron significativas. El factor de impacto medio por especialidad fue de 2,46 para cardiologia y 0,98 para radiodiagnostico. To estimate the influence of the authors' country and collaboration on the probability of subsequent full publication of material from oral presentations at the 2000 European Congress of Radiology (ECR).After searching the Medline database for articles published between 2000 and 2003, all articles that originated from presentations at the ECR in 2000 and were published in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Report were evaluated. Relative likelihood of full publication depending on the country in which an abstract originated was compared with that of Austria, which is the host country of the ECR. The chi(2) test was used to compare publication rates according to country of origin and collaboration. The median and interquartile range of the impact factor of publications according to country of origin and collaboration in the abstract were analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The percentage of articles published in journals ranked in the top quartile (top 25% of journals according to impact factor) was calculated.Of 1020 presentations, 403 articles (39%) with significant (P.001) variations according to country of origin were identified. Studies originating from the United States had the highest percentage of full publication (62%; relative likelihood, 1.41), median impact factor (4.5), and percentage of articles in the top quartile (54%). Radiology was the top quartile journal, with the most articles published (60%). Impact factor differed according to country of origin (P.001). Abstracts submitted with collaboration between (a) European countries and countries outside of Europe (other than the United States) and (b) different European countries had the highest publication rates (83% and 52%, respectively; P = .03).The country of origin of an abstract was useful in predicting the chances of full publication of the abstract, with the United States having the highest publication rate. Authors were more likely to publish an article if it had been prepared with international collaboration.

The purpose of this report was to determine the rate at which abstracts orally presented at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2001 were published in 2001–2005 Medline-indexed journals and to compare publication rates and factors with presentations at the ECR in two different periods (2001 and 2000).
