Abstract Kidney stones represent a significant global health challenge, with dietary habits playing a crucial role in their formation. This study investigates the association between dietary fatty acid intake—specifically saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)—and the prevalence of kidney stones in a U.S. adult population, aiming to inform potential dietary prevention strategies. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007–2018 were analyzed, including 30,716 participants. Logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between fatty acid intake and kidney stones prevalence, adjusting for demographic and health-related covariates such as age, sex, BMI, diabetes status, physical activity, and other dietary factors. Additional analyses were conducted to explore the effects of fatty acid intake as a percentage of total energy and the impact of various fatty acid ratios. Higher intakes of SFA, MUFA, and PUFA were associated with increased odds of kidney stones prevalence. Specifically, each 10 g/day increase in SFA, MUFA, and PUFA intake was linked to a 22% [OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.11–1.34, p = 0.002], 10% [OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.00–1.22, p = 0.052] and 21% [OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.10–1.33, p = 0.001] higher odds of kidney stones, respectively. These associations were generally consistent across various subgroups. Additional analyses examining fatty acid intake as a percentage of total energy and various fatty acid ratios yielded compatible findings. The findings suggest a modest association between higher dietary fatty acid intake and increased odds of kidney stones prevalence. While the observed odds increases were relatively small, these results highlight the importance of considering dietary fatty acid types in kidney stones prevention strategies. Future research is needed to further elucidate the underlying mechanisms and to refine dietary recommendations.

Abstract The study aims to evaluate the levels of nitrosamine, a known carcinogenic compound, in processed meat products and to assess its dietary intake and margin of exposure among medical staff, including physicians, pharmacists, and nurses working night shifts at Alexandria University Hospitals. Additionally, the study seeks to evaluate the participants’ knowledge of dietary sources and regulatory limits of carcinogens. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 420 participants. Results showed that hotdogs contained the highest nitrosamine levels (159.24 ± 87.99 µg/g) with a consumption pattern of 0.02126 µg/kg BW/day. In contrast, sausages and burgers had the lowest nitrosamine content (2.36 µg/g and 2.37 µg/g, respectively). Luncheon meat also exhibited low nitrosamine levels and consumption patterns, at 18.53 µg/g and 0.00141 µg/kg BW/day, respectively. The Margin of Exposure (MOE) was calculated to assess risk, with a Benchmark Dose Lower Confidence Limit (BMDL)10 value of 29 µg/kg BW/day as the reference point. Background and objectives: Adequate nutrition and a good dietary practice play an important role in recovery from tuberculosis (TB). Improper dietary practice and poor nutrition lead to low immunity in the host and thus increase the risk of active TB in addition to relapse and mortality. The objective of the study was to assess the dietary intake and its determinants in patients on anti-tubercular treatment. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, in four Designated Microscopic Centres under the administration of the District TB Cell of Aligarh district from January 2020 to December 2021. Adult TB patients undergoing treatment between the ages of 18 to 60 years were enrolled. A semi-structured questionnaire was used as a study tool. The 24-hour recall method was used for eliciting dietary intake as it had less recall bias. The sufficient and insufficient dietary cut offs were chosen from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) nutrient guidelines for TB patients. The data was analyzed by appropriate statistical tests. Results: A total of 410 TB patients participated in the study. Majority (61.7%) of the patients were unemployed and 46.8% belonged to the lower middle class. Of the total cases, 83.2% patients were consuming energy below the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). The protein intake was sub-optimal in 71%, while 52% were taking fat below RDA. Age, gender, and education of the participants were significantly associated (< 0.05) with their energy and protein intake. Conclusions: The participants’ intake of nutrients was suboptimal compared to RDA. Thus, there is a need to improve the nutritional status of TB patients. Therefore, findings of the study could be utilised to plan programs for improved nutritional care for under privileged TB patients living in rural and urban areas. *Correspondence: S. Abstract Anthocyanins, as a type of polyphenolic compound, have been discovered to offer multiple health benefits to humans, including anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. This prospective cohort study aims to examine the relationship of dietary intake of anthocyanin with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular diseases mortality in the US. The aim of this research was to explore the possible correlation between anthocyanin consumption and the mortality rate from all causes as well as from cardiovascular disease. Based on the Public Access NHANES-linked National Death Index files up to December 31, 2019, we identified mortality status and heart disease-specific causes of death. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was employed to evaluate the effects of anthocyanin intake on mortality outcomes, generating hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals, adjusting for various demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and comorbid conditions. Additionally, we utilized Kaplan-Meier survival curves, subgroup analyses. In different scenarios, dietary anthocyanin intake was assessed using restricted cubic spline models. A total of 11,959 participants completed the final cohort, averaging 47.12 years of age (SD ± 0.35). Following adjustments for multiple variables, an inverse relationship was identified between anthocyanin intake in the highest quartile and all causes mortality, yielding a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.68 (95% CI: 0.52–0.89). Similarly, elevated anthocyanin consumption was linked to a reduction in heart disease mortality, with HR of 0.61 (95% CI: 0.38–0.97). Additionally, dose–response curve revealed a consistent decrease in both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality with increasing anthocyanin intake. Further subgroup analyses revealed that elevated intake of anthocyanins was linked to decreased all-cause mortality in White individuals and males. Moreover, high anthocyanin intake was significantly correlated with reduced all-cause mortality irrespective of hypertension or hyperlipidemia status. Our research indicates that an appropriate dietary intake of anthocyanins is associated with a reduction in overall mortality rates. Furthermore, the findings reveal a substantial association between anthocyanin intake and decreased mortality from cardiovascular diseases, suggesting that anthocyanins may effectively lower the risk of cardiovascular-related deaths.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether a reduction in accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior (SB) improves blood lipids in inactive adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Sixty-four participants were randomly assigned into intervention (INT, n = 33) and control (CONT, n = 31) groups. The INT group was instructed to reduce SB by 1 h/day without increasing formal exercise, whereas the CONT group was advised to maintain usual SB habits. SB and physical activity (PA) were measured with accelerometers throughout the intervention. Plasma lipid concentrations and dietary intake by food diaries were assessed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. High-density lipoprotein percentage of total cholesterol decreased during the intervention similarly in both groups (p = 0.047). Other blood lipids did not change from baseline to six months in either group. The CONT group had a statistically significant reduction in the intake of saturated fatty acids compared to the INT group (p = 0.03). Intervention resulting in a 40-minute reduction in daily SB and 20-minute increase in habitual MVPA seems to not be effective in improving blood lipids in adults with MetS. Reducing SB together with a higher volume and/or intensity of PA and proper nutrition may be needed to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Trial registration. South Asians are among the fastest-growing immigrant population group in the United States (U.S.) with a unique disease risk profile. Due in part to immigration and acculturation factors, South Asians engage differently with behavioural risk factors (e.g. smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and diet) for hypertension, which may be modified for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Using data from the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America cohort, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis to evaluate the association between behavioural risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diet. We created a behavioural risk factor score based on smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and TV watching. We also calculated a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary score based on inclusion of relevant dietary components. We used both scores to examine the association between engaging with risk factors for hypertension and the DASH diet among a cohort of South Asian adults. We found that participants with 3–4 behavioural risk factors had a DASH diet score that was 3 units lower than those with no behavioural risk factors (aβ: –3.25; 95% CI: –4.28, –2.21) and were 86% less likely to have a DASH diet score in the highest category compared to the lowest DASH diet score category (aOR: 0.14; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.37) in the fully adjusted models. These findings highlight the relationship between behavioural risk factors for hypertension among South Asians in the U.S.

Abstract The early stages of childhood are a crucial period of life for health, with inadequate nutrition impacting physical growth, cognitive development, and the immune system. A considerable proportion of children are affected by micronutrient intake inadequacy and deficiency across the globe. Evidence on micronutrient intake among children aged 6–23 months is limited in Northwest Ethiopia, where there is a divergence between production and dietary consumption practices compared to other regions of the country. This study aimed to determine micronutrient inadequacy and associated factors among children aged 6–23 months. From February 1 to February 18, 2023, 435 children aged 6–23 months participated in a community-based cross-sectional study in the North Mecha District of the Amhara Region, Northwest Ethiopia. The study participants were selected using a multistage sampling technique. A multiphasic interactive 24-h dietary recall was used to collect dietary intake data via an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The interviews were conducted with the mothers of the selected children. Nutrient values for the selected 12 micronutrients were calculated using the NutriSurvey 2007 software and food composition tables from Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya. SPSS version 25 was used for the remaining parts of the analysis. The Nutrient Adequacy Ratio and Mean Adequacy Ratio were calculated to evaluate the nutrient intakes. Abstract Plant-based diets have gained attention for their potential benefits on both human health and environmental sustainability. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of plant-based dietary patterns with the endogenous metabolites of healthy individuals and identify metabolites that may act as mediators of the associations between dietary intake and modifiable disease risk factors. Adherence to plant-based dietary patterns was assessed for 170 healthy adults using plant-based diet indexes (PDI). Individuals with higher healthful PDI had lower BMI and fasting glucose and higher HDL-C, while those with higher unhealthful PDI had higher BMI, triacylglycerol and fasting glucose and lower HDL-C. Unhealthful PDI was associated with higher levels of several amino acids and biogenic amines previously associated with cardiometabolic diseases and an opposite pattern was observed for healthful PDI. Furthermore, healthful PDI was associated with higher levels of glycerophosphocholines containing very long-chain fatty acids. Glutamate, isoleucine, proline, tyrosine, α-aminoadipate and kynurenine had a statistically significant mediation effect on the associations between PDI scores and LDL-C, HDL-C and fasting glucose. These findings contribute to the growing evidence supporting the role of plant-based diets in promoting metabolic health and shed light on the potential mechanisms explaining their beneficial health effects.

Background: Sustainable dietary practices can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote planetary health. The importance of investigating how to promote sustainable dietary practices is therefore crucial. Nature Relatedness measures an individual’s connection to nature and can predict environmental concern and stewardship. While emerging research has suggested those with a higher degree of Nature Relatedness report the intention to follow more sustainable dietary practices, the relationship between actual dietary intake and Nature Relatedness has yet to be fully explored. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study was to assess the relationship between diet quality and Nature Relatedness. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, participants across the United States completed the online survey from September to November 2023. Diet History Questionnaire II and Nature Relatedness scale were completed by the participants. Diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020 total and component scores. Nature Relatedness total and subscale scores were computed. Pearson and Spearman Rho correlation coefficients assessed associations between HEI-2020 and Nature Relatedness. Simple linear regression models examined the relationships between HEI-2020 total and component scores and Nature Relatedness (controlling for age, gender, race, and education). Abstract Studies on the beneficial role of dietary antioxidants in preventing or managing hypertension in postmenopausal women are infrequent. The present cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association between dietary antioxidants and hypertension among menopausal women in Rafsanjan, a city located in the southeast of Iran. This study was based on data from the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), as part of the Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN (PERSIAN). Among 2359 postmenopausal women, finally, 1936 women were included in this study. Participants were grouped as having normal blood pressure (BP), elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension, or stage 2 hypertension as defined by the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) BP guideline. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), was utilized to ascertain the levels of various nutrients and dietary antioxidants in the diet. The association between dietary intakes of antioxidants and blood pressure groups was evaluated by crude and adjusted models in the multinominal logistics regression analysis. Normal BP, elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension were observed in 35.69%, 3.62%, 10.59%, and 50.10% of postmenopausal women respectively. In the adjusted model, in subjects with higher consumption of β-carotene, the odds ratios of elevated BP in the 3rd quartile was about 2 times (OR: 2.04 (1.06–3.93) higher than 1st quartile. Also, in subjects with medium quality of DAQS, the odds ratios of elevated BP and stage 1 blood pressure were about 2 times (OR: 2.09 (1.05–4.17) and 1.69 times (OR: 1.69 (1.09–2.63) higher than subjects with low quality respectively. Furthermore, we did not find any statistically significant association between increased intake of dietary antioxidants and decreased odds of hypertension. After controlling the effects of confounding variables, increased dietary intake of selenium, carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E did not decrease the odds of hypertension in postmenopausal women. Accordingly, it is suggested that this association be further investigated in the follow-up phase of this prospective study.

Abstract The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between dietary intake of fatty acids and the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the United States population. Adult participants of the 2005–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this nationwide cross-sectional study. Dietary fatty acid intake was obtained from two 24-h dietary recall interviews. The intake of dietary fatty acids was analyzed as a continuous and categorical variable. AMD status was assessed using nonmydriatic fundus photographs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between dietary fatty acid intake and AMD. The unweighted population included 4702 individuals of whom 374 had AMD. After adjusting for relevant variables, each 1 unit increase (1 mg/1000 kcal) intake of EPA (OR: 0.996, 95% CI: 0.993–0.996, P = 0.018), DPA (OR: 0.976, 95% CI: 0.962–0.990, P = 0.002), and DHA (OR: 0.996, 95% CI: 0.994–0.999, P = 0.003) were significantly decreased odds of any AMD. Abstract This cross-sectional study investigated the association between glaucoma and B vitamin dietary intake. A total of 5025 enrolled individuals participated in self-reported glaucoma questionnaire and 3264 participated in International Society Geographical and Epidemiological Ophthalmology (ISGEO) criteria. In self-reported glaucoma, the risk of having self-reported glaucoma was lower in the third quartile of vitamin B1 intake (odds ratio [odds ratio [OR] 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.40–0.97), and P trend (P trend = 0.004) for vitamin B12 was significant; in males, the third quartile of vitamin B1 intake (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.24–0.83) and the fourth quartile of vitamin B2 intake (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.17–0.89) were associated with a lower risk. In glaucoma based on ISGEO criteria, the increase of niacin intake (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.89–0.99) was negatively associated with the odds of self-reported glaucoma. After sex-stratified analysis, the third quartile of vitamin B6 intake (OR 0.21, 95% CI 0.08–0.60) in males were associated with reduced odds of glaucoma. The restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a nonlinear association of vitamin B2 (p for nonlinearity = 0.04) and B9 (p for nonlinearity = 0.024) intake with glaucoma diagnosed by ISGEO criteria in females.

Background and Objectives: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at risk of insufficient nutrient intake due to inappropriate eating habits, problems in sensory perception, and choosing monotonous foods. Minerals play an essential role in the central nervous system, and their deficiency or excess can cause a variety of health issues and can contribute to the development of ASD. This study aimed to compare the dietary intake of zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese in two groups of children, with ASD and healthy controls, in Gorgan City, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this study, the food intake of 35 ASD children aged 6 to 12 years and 70 healthy children was recorded using the semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. The average daily intake of zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese was estimated using ShaFA software. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the dietary intake of zinc, copper, and selenium; however, the intake of manganese was significantly lower in ASD children (median±IQR: 2.39±1.83) than in healthy children (median±IQR: 3.24±1.94; P=0.03). Conclusion: Considering the existence of problems related to eating habits in children with ASD, the results of this study showed the necessity of frequent and regular nutrition assessment for ASD children. Studies with larger sample sizes are recommended.

Introduction: Malnutrition is a major global health crisis that needs immediate attention. Adolescence is a crucial stage where nutrition plays a major role on account of their growth and development. There is a need to assess the nutritional status of Government school children in Tamil nadu to take appropriate policy decisions and implement nutritional interventions. Aim: To assess the dietary gaps of Government school children and compare their anthropometric parameters with Indian Council of Medical Reasearch (ICMR) standards. Also, to associate their daily intake of five food groups with their weight status. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu District, Chennai,Tamil Nadu, India as a part of a nutritional awareness camp in month of March 2022 to examine the eating pattern of school-going children aged 11-14 years, in a Government school of Kalivanthapattu village, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu. Data was collected randomly among 73 school children during a nutritional awareness camp conducted by study Institute. A validated tool was used to identify the dietary gaps in food group intake and the anthropometric parameters were assessed using standard measures and were compared with ICMR and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards to analyse their nutritional status. The acquired data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: Out of the 73 children, there were 52 girls and 21 boys and the mean age of the children was 12.09±0.80 years. The dietary gap assessment tool indicated the gross deficiency in the intake of different food groups by the children. The majority of the samples 52 (71.2%) had an average dietary pattern, 9 (12.3%) students were found to have poor dietary habits and only 12 (16.4%) students had a good dietary pattern. Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment indicated that 39 students (53.4%) were normal (-2SD to +1SD) and others were found to be malnourished. A substantial variation in the mean weight of 12-year-old-male students (p-value=0.025) as well as female students (p-value=0.003) was observed when compared to ICMR standards. There was high significant difference between mean height of 13-year-old female students and the mean height as per ICMR standards (p-value=0.004). Conclusion: The dietary intake of Government school children was average and the anthropemetric assessment indicated that many of them were malnourished.

Background: Considering the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic on the level of physical activity, food patterns, and quality of life (QOL) of people in the community, the present study aims to investigate the relationship between the level of physical activity, dietary intake, and body mass index (BMI) with the QOL of people with Down syndrome during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 2021. 384 girls and boys with Down syndrome (mean age 12.07 ± 3.48 years and 12.28 ± 3.03 years, respectively) were selected by available and targeted sampling method. The research tools included physical activity questionnaire for older children (PAQ-C) and physical activity questionnaire for adolescents (PAQ-A), food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36), which were completed by the parents of the samples. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics methods (Spearman correlation coefficient and Mann-Whitney U test) in SPSS software. Findings: The average score of physical activity level for boys and girls was 2.62 ± 0.93 and 2.53 ± 0.95, respectively, which indicates the unfavorable level of physical activity in these people. In the dimension of QOL and based on the eight subscales, it was determined that there was no difference between the dimensions of QOL in girls and boys. Besides, there was no significant relationship between the amount of physical activity of girls and boys with QOL dimensions. Findings related to consumption of macronutrients and QOL dimensions showed that in girls and boys, there was a relationship between protein and fat consumption and physical pain, although this relationship was weak (P < 0.05). Moreover, in girls and boys, a negative relationship was observed between carbohydrate and fat consumption with vitality, physical performance, and physical limitation (P < 0.05). According to the results, it was found that in boys and girls, there was a negative and significant relationship between BMI and vitality, physical performance, and physical limitation (P < 0.05). However, in boys, a significant negative relationship between BMI and mental problems was also observed. This means that by reducing the BMI of girls and boys, the aspects of QOL in them improved (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The reduction in the intake of carbohydrates and fat macronutrients in girls and boys leads to changes in some aspects of the QOL (increasing vitality, improving physical performance, and reducing physical limitations) due to the epidemic of the COVID-19. It can also be expected that by reducing the BMI, improvement in indicators of vitality, physical performance, and reduction of physical limitations will be achieved.

ObjectivesThe Veggie Van model is a mobile market model that is efficacious in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption for lower-income participants. The model is currently being evaluated for its effectiveness in a multi-state trial. Preliminary implementation data, collected through process measures surveys and implementation interviews, indicate that there are several barriers to implementation among partner organizations and implementation fidelity to the Veggie Van model was low. Consideration and planning for implementation ought to occur early and often throughout the research process order to ensure Veggie Van model effectiveness. This paper describes the step-by-step process for creating strategies to enhance implementation of Veggie Van model components.MethodsImplementation mapping is a systematic process to develop implementation strategies through engagement with key stakeholders. We conducted a series of interviews (n = 31 representatives) with partner organizations (n = 8) to identify facilitators and barriers to Veggie Van model implementation. We then applied interview findings to an Implementation Mapping process to develop theory and practice-driven strategies to be integrated into existing implementation tools and technical assistance.ResultsWe identified implementation outcomes (e.g., staff implement the Veggie Van model component of nutrition education with fidelity) and performance objectives (e.g., offer nutrition education, in the form of food lessons and/or food demonstrations, at least bi-weekly) to achieve them. We conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of the findings from implementation interviews with partner organizations to identify behavioral determinants (e.g., attitudinal beliefs, social support) which were combined with the performance objectives to generate change objectives (e.g., view the Veggie Van model as advantageous to an organization and communities served). To achieve the change objectives, we developed implementation strategies that would be integrated into existing Veggie Van training resources including an online toolkit, webinars and trainings, an annual mobile market conference, and technical assistance.ConclusionThe development of theory and practice-driven implementation strategies will enable us to improve our implementation tools, thereby improving fidelity to the Veggie Van model among organizations and increasing the likelihood of its effectiveness. Detailing the design of a multifaceted implementation strategy using Implementation Mapping also provides a model to design similar strategies for other community-based interventions.

This scoping review aimed to identify questionnaire-based dietary assessment methods for use in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS) in Japan. The search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Ichushi) to identify questionnaire such as food frequency questionnaire and dietary history questionnaire validated against dietary recalls or food records for the intakes of both food groups and nutrients among Japanese adults. Study quality was assessed based on previously developed criteria. We extracted the questionnaire characteristics and the design and results of the validation studies. We identified 11 questionnaires, with the number of food items ranging from 40 to 196, from 32 articles of good quality. In the validation studies, participants were aged 30–76 years and 90% of the articles used ≥3 d dietary records as reference. The number of nutrients and food groups with a group-level intake difference within 20% against the reference method ranged from 1 to 30 and 1 to 11, respectively. The range of mean correlation coefficients between questionnaire and reference methods were 0.35–0.57 for nutrients and 0.28–0.52 for food groups. When selecting a survey instrument in the NHNS from the 11 existing questionnaires identified in this study, it is important to select one with high group-level comparison and correlation coefficient values on the intended assessment items after scrutinizing the design and results of the validation study. This review may serve as a reference for future studies that explore dietary assessment tools used for assessing dietary intake in specific representative populations.

This study aimed to compare the differences in the intake of food groups and nutrients between Japanese adults who consumed the recommended daily vegetable intake (350 g/day) and those who did not. Dietary information was obtained from one-day dietary records collected from the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, which was conducted in 46 prefectures in Japan. The participants aged ≥20 years (n = 21,606; 53.8% women) were classified into the < and ≥350 g/day groups. Inter-group differences for 17 food groups and 27 nutrients were assessed as percentages of consumers (food groups only) and energy-adjusted intake (units/MJ/d or % of total energy intake). Background and Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial disorder that is affected by genetic and environmental factors, including nutritional factors. Recently, the role of nutrients, especially vitamin A, in the pathophysiology and treatment of ASD has received increasing attention. In addition, ASD affects the nutritional pattern and therefore some nutrients may not be received enough. This study was conducted to investigate and compare the intake of different forms of vitamin A in children with ASD and healthy children as a control group in Gorgan City (Northeast of Iran). Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 35 children aged 6 to 12 years with ASD and 70 healthy children who were matched in terms of age and gender were included. Food intake information was recorded using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To calculate the dietary intake of vitamin A, the FFQ information was entered into ShaFA software. Results: The age difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P=0.27). The total intake of vitamin A was significantly higher in the control group than in the ASD group. The intake levels of retinol, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and lycopene were higher in the control group than in the ASD group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of total intake of lutein and zeaxanthin. Conclusion: Although the average intake of the two groups was higher than the average values recommended for the corresponding age and gender populations, the lower intake of various food sources of vitamin A in the ASD group indicated the need to pay attention to the food intake of these children, especially that according to the evidence, this disease directly or indirectly affected eating habits and patterns.

Few studies have examined the role adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have on specific diet patterns. This study assessed the association between ACEs and daily fruit and vegetable intake (FVI). Data were derived from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) which surveys 50 states and three U.S. territories. Participants who completed the ACEs module were included in the analyses (N = 106,967). Total ACEs included the summed responses from the domains of abuse, household challenges, and neglect. FVI was reported by number of times consumed per day. The two fruit items included fruit (fresh, frozen, and canned) and fruit juice. The four vegetable items included leafy greens, fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and other vegetables. All fruit and vegetable items were analyzed separately to see which specific items drove the relationship between total ACEs and total FVI, equaling a total of 8 regression models. Every model controlled for poor mental health days, sex, age, ethnicity, income, body mass index, and physical activity. Background: Among profibrotic and oxidant factors, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have a major impact on the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, very limited studies evaluated the relationships between nutrient intake and the mentioned factors in patients with CKD. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the correlation between dietary intake and the levels of MMPs, AGEs, and blood pressure (BP) in these patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 90 patients with CKD (stages 2–5). To evaluate the dietary intake of patients, three days of 24-hour food recall were completed through face-to-face and telephone interviews. Measurement of MMP-2 and MMP-9 concentration was done by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The fluorimetric technique was used to measure the total serum AGEs. Results: The patients’ average dietary intake of sodium, potassium, phosphorus, energy, and protein was 725 mg/day, 1600 mg/day, 703 mg/day, 1825 kcal/day, and 64.83 g/day, respectively. After adjustment of confounding variables, a significant inverse relationship was observed between dietary intake of insoluble fiber and serum levels of MMP-2 (β = -0.218, P = 0.05). In addition, a significant positive relationship was found between molybdenum (Mo) intake and diastolic BP (β =0.229, P = 0.036). Conclusion: A higher intake of insoluble fiber might be associated with lower serum levels of MMP-2. Also, a higher Mo intake can be correlated to a higher DBP in patients with CKD. It is suggested to conduct future studies with longitudinal designs and among various populations to better elucidate the observed relationships.

Background Linear growth retardation in the first two years of life leads to numerous harmful consequences. Lack of diversity in the diet and inadequate amounts of complementary food have been associated with stunted growth in children. Objective To assess the dietary intake and investigate for associations with stunting among children aged 6-23 months. Methods This case-control study compared the dietary intake of children aged 6-23 months with and without stunting in the South and West Wewewa subdistricts of Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Complementary food types, dietary diversity, and nutritional intake were assessed and compared between groups. Nutrient intake sufficiency and stunting were analyzed by logistic regression. Results A total of 200 participants were equally allocated into groups with and without stunting. Only 6% of stunted children received adequate complementary food diversity compared to 14% of non-stunted children (P=0.05). The aim of the study was to reveal the relationship between the parameters of actual nutrition and the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system in adolescents aged 14–17 in a rural area. Material and methods. 76 adolescents aged 14–17 of the Irkutsk region were examined by the cross-sectional study method. Actual nutrition was studied by the 24-hour nutrition reproduction method. The content of substrates with unsaturated double bonds (DB), diene conjugates (DC), ketodienes and conjugated trienes (KD and CT), thiobarbituric acid reacting species (TBARS), α-tocopherol, retinol, reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), total blood antioxidant activity (TAA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in blood by spectrophotometry and fluorometry methods were analyzed. Results. The adolescents’ diet did not meet the principles of a balanced diet – there was reduced protein intake, an imbalance of unsaturated fatty acids, A, C, D, B vitamins deficiency. An excessive element in the diet was sodium. The content of substrates with DB, KD and CT and TBARS increased significantly in the studied group of adolescents, the concentration of DC decreased. Parameters of antioxidant defense both decreased (TAA, retinol content) and increased (α-tocopherol, GSH concentration). Correlation analysis showed relationships between DB and vitamin B1, B2 content; DC level and calories, carbohydrate and vitamin B1 content; concentration of KD and CT and fats, TAA and vitamin A and β-carotene level; level of α-tocopherol in blood and vitamin E in food; GSH and vitamin K; SOD activity and vitamin H content. Multiple negative correlations were between GSSG and fat, vitamins B1, B9, C, K food concentration were found.Conclusions. The calculated vitamin consumption indicators allow to reveal nutritional deviations in adolescents and to connect them with the real provision of the body with these metabolites.

Background/aim Mediterranean diet is one of the healthy diets as many health benefits are strongly and robustly supported by evidence from long-term observational studies and randomized trials. This study aims to assess the nutrition-related breast cancer (BC) prevention factors, knowledge, attitudes, and practice of Egyptian BC patients. Patients and methods The study included 222 Egyptian women shared as volunteers in a case–control study, with age range: 25–75 years, with breast mass confirmed by mammogram. Using breast tissue core biopsy, 83 diagnosed with malignant tumor lesion, and 54 cases were found to have benign lesion. In total, 85 healthy women (control group) selection that was matched with the patients who had free mammograms on both sides, were chosen to be a control. All women were subjected to thorough clinical examination, anthropometric measurements, diet history, lifestyle, and health attitude assessment. Results Data revealed that benign and BC patients were older (49.33±11.98, 49.49±10.89 years), while BC patients had the highest BMI (35.45±15.58 kg/m2). Data concerned with successful social relationship were good; numerical differences between other factors that concerned lifestyle were reported. Large number of patients with benign tumors and BC did not adhere to consumed healthy diet, their scores when compared with Mediterranean diet were 5.58±3.70 and 5.44±2.81 compared with 6.67±3.00 of the control. BC patients had the lowest intake of milk and dairy products, vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, and olive oil compared with the control with high significant differences (P≤0.01), while consumption of red and processed meat was significantly high, which was different from what was recorded in their belief and preference of such food. Conclusion According to the findings of this study, Egyptian BC patients who participated in this study had the lowest attitude and adherence to eat healthy diet. Data highlighted the necessity to increase the successful good social relationships and support for cancer patients.

The objective of the present study was to assess the dietary intake of steviol glycosides in the Belgian population and to conduct a risk assessment by comparing the estimated intakes to the acceptable daily intake (ADI). A tiered approach was adopted in this study. First, a Tier 2 assessment was performed using maximum permitted levels. Next, the calculations were refined because market share data were used (refined Tier 2). Finally, the actual concentration data of 198 samples purchased from the Belgian market were used for Tier 3 exposure assessment. Based on a Tier 2 assessment, the ADI was exceeded for the high-consumer children population. However, the results of a more refined exposure assessment (Tier 3) of high consumers (P95) within the child, adolescent and adult populations were 13·75, 10 and 6·25 % of the ADI, respectively, using mean analytical results. Even with more conservative refined approaches, the estimated daily intake remained below 20 % of ADI. Flavoured drinks, flavoured fermented milk products and jams, jellies, and marmalades were the top three contributing food groups to steviol intake at 26–49 %, 12–27 % and 5–13 %, respectively. Despite the high concentrations (up to 94 000 mg/kg) of steviol glycosides in tabletop sweeteners, their contribution to the total intake remains low. The impact of the use of food supplements on the total intake was also considered to be limited. It was concluded that there was no risk for the Belgian population related to dietary exposure to steviol glycoside.

Adequate nutrition is necessary during childhood and early adolescence for adequate growth and development. Hence, the objective of the study was to assess the association between dietary intake and blood levels of minerals (calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium) and vitamins (folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, and vitamin D) in urban school going children aged 6–16 years in India, in a multicentric cross-sectional study. Participants were enrolled from randomly selected schools in ten cities. Three-day food intake data was collected using a 24-h dietary recall method. The intake was dichotomised into adequate and inadequate. Blood samples were collected to assess levels of micronutrients. From April 2019 to February 2020, 2428 participants (50⋅2 % females) were recruited from 60 schools. Inadequate intake for calcium was in 93⋅4 % (246⋅5 ± 149⋅4 mg), iron 86⋅5 % (7⋅6 ± 3⋅0 mg), zinc 84⋅0 % (3⋅9 ± 2⋅4 mg), selenium 30⋅2 % (11⋅3 ± 9⋅7 mcg), folate 73⋅8 % (93⋅6 ± 55⋅4 mcg), vitamin B12 94⋅4 % (0⋅2 ± 0⋅4 mcg), vitamin A 96⋅0 % (101⋅7 ± 94⋅1 mcg), and vitamin D 100⋅0 % (0⋅4 ± 0⋅6 mcg). Controlling for sex and socioeconomic status, the odds of biochemical deficiency with inadequate intake for iron [AOR = 1⋅37 (95 % CI 1⋅07–1⋅76)], zinc [AOR = 5⋅14 (95 % CI 2⋅24–11⋅78)], selenium [AOR = 3⋅63 (95 % CI 2⋅70–4⋅89)], folate [AOR = 1⋅59 (95 % CI 1⋅25–2⋅03)], and vitamin B12 [AOR = 1⋅62 (95 %CI 1⋅07–2⋅45)]. Since there is a significant association between the inadequate intake and biochemical deficiencies of iron, zinc, selenium, folate, and vitamin B12, regular surveillance for adequacy of micronutrient intake must be undertaken to identify children at risk of deficiency, for timely intervention.

This systematic review assessed the correlates of children's dietary intake, physical activity and sedentary behavior in home-based childcare. A systematic search of five databases with articles published between January 2000 and July 2021 was conducted. Articles were included if they contained data from a home-based childcare (birth-5 years) setting; were a quantitative study that reported children's dietary intake, physical activity or sedentary behavior; included variables associated with children's dietary intake, physical activity or sedentary behavior; and were published in English. Correlates were categorized using McLeroy’s social ecological framework. Risk of bias was assessed using the Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) Risk of Bias Rating Tool. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria; six assessed children's dietary intake, and nine assessed physical activity and/or sedentary behaviors. Studies were conducted in the USA (n = 12) and Canada (n = 3). Seventy-three correlates were identified, for children's dietary intake (n = 11), physical activity (n = 35) and sedentary behavior (n = 27). Ethnicity and the food provided to children were associated with children's dietary intake in two studies; both from the same study sample. Indoor play space was positively associated with physical activity in two separate studies. No consistent associations for children's dietary intake, physical activity, or sedentary behavior outcomes were found between studies, however few studies assessed the same correlates. High-quality studies conducted in different countries that assess the nutrition and physical activity environments in home-based childcare using reliable and consistent methods are needed. Background: Dietary patterns provide comprehensive information about the food consumption habits within a population and how an individual’s dietary pattern may change with age. Aim: To evaluate the nutritional status and dietary patterns of the elderly in Thulamela municipality of Vhembe district, Limpopo province. Setting: Study was conducted in Thulamela municipality of Vhembe district, Limpopo province. Methods: This study included 300 elderly people recruited from Thulamela municipality of Vhembe district, Limpopo province. The municipality was randomly selected, and convenience sampling was used to choose elderly people. Body weight and height were measured using standard techniques. Body mass index (BMI) was determined and classified using BMI categories. Data on dietary patterns and dietary intake were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. Results: A total of 300 elderly people from villages participated in the study. About 38.6% of elderly people had a primary education, while 28.1% had a secondary education. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity was 2.0%, 34.0% and 17.0%, respectively. Less than half of the elderly people did not meet the reference intake of energy (p = 0.023). More than half of the elderly people did not meet the reference intake of protein, iron, zinc, potassium, calcium and vitamins B1, B12 and C. It was found that 13.7% of the elderly skipped breakfast every day. About 19.6% of the elderly ate supper sometimes, while 13.7% did not eat supper. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed that most of the participants ate three main meals a day, with a minority skipping either breakfast or dinner or eating in between meals. The prevalence of underweight was low and that of overweight and obesity was high. Contribution: Poor food choices and physiological changes may reduce the inclusion of food rich in minerals and vitamins in the elderly’s diets and prompt the prevalence of malnutrition.

Introduction: A well-nourished population represents the sustainable development of a nation. Poor alignment between food intake and dietary recommendations results in consumption of high calorie, low nutrient dense foods. Aims & Objectives: The main goal of this study is to find the relation between food literacy and dietary intake. Secondly, to assess the influence of food literacy on food purchasing habits. Place and duration of study: For this review, collection of studies from PubMed and Cochrane databases was started in May 2020 and was finalized by June 2020. Material & Methods: The eligibility criteria were based on two factors; that the study be written in English and published through a peer reviewed journal. Through the database search, total 673 studies were identified. After checking studies thoroughly at various steps, only 26 were included in this review. Results: 11 studies claimed the link between food label reading and intake of nutrients, while there were 10 studies that measured the consumer's purchase and food choices by their awareness level about food labels. Conclusion: This systematic review demonstrates nutrition education to be directly correlated with the food-related habits of people. Further research is required to get a clear vision about knowledge of nutritional labels and its effect on real life dietary choices.

Background and aims: Migraine is a neurologic disorder with wide global spread. Quality of life (QOL) and dietary factors are important parameters in migraine management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of mood status, QOL, and dietary intake with migraine symptoms among women with migraine. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 143 women with migraine aged 20–40 years who were randomly selected from two clinics in Isfahan, Iran. Data were collected using the Food Frequency Questionnaire for Assessing Dietary Patterns, a visual analogue scale for migraine headaches, the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. The serum level of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was also measured. Results: Participants’ age and number of sleeping hours per 24 hours had significant relationship with migraine severity, depression and anxiety had significant relationship with migraine severity and the duration of migraine attacks, and QOL had significant relationship with migraine severity and the duration and frequency of migraine attacks. Daily intake of riboflavin also had significant relationship with frequency of migraine attacks, while daily intake of water had significant relationship with migraine severity (P < 0.05). However, serum level of CGRP had no significant relationship with migraine (P > 0.05). The relationships of vitamin D and magnesium intake with depression were also significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Serum level of CGRP has no significant relationship with migraine attacks, while depression, anxiety, QOL, and magnesium and vitamin D intake have significant relationship with migraine attacks.

Two of the greatest challenges of our times - climate change and the linked epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease - are fueled in part by the over-consumption of carbon-intensive high calorie foodstuffs. Converging evidence from hundreds of studies has confirmed that transitioning from diets high in meat and dairy to largely plant-based diets not only is necessary for climate change mitigation but will also lead to substantive reductions in morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, there are only the faintest beginnings of a robust science of behavioral eco-wellness, defined here as the study of how individual choices, behaviors, and habits impact both personal health and environmental sustainability. This paper focusses on the sub-field of dietary eco-wellness, which looks at health and sustainability impacts of food production, procurement, preparation, and consumption. To advance this crucial agenda, investigators will need to invent, develop, and assess approaches aimed at helping people transition towards healthier and more sustainable diets. In order to accurately and reliably assess appropriate outcomes, existing assessment methods will need to be refined, new techniques will need to be advanced, and all measurement methods will need to be validated. Local conditions will influence the effectiveness of various approaches, and so it is important that scientists and communities share their stories of success and challenge for others to learn from. This paper reviews emerging evidence from relevant studies in dozens of countries, suggesting next steps, potential pathways, and a framework for interpretation.

Background: Mothers play an important role in controlling family eating habits as well as the type of food consumed. Obesity is one of the causing factors for many diseases. Objectives: This study was designed to determine whether a woman's level of education is associated with the family's daily dietary intake and mother weight status or not. Materials and Methods: A web survey study designed through Google Forms was sent online to the entire Iraqi population from August 26 to September 20, 2020. The survey was distributed through institutional and private social networks (University E-mail, Facebook, Instagram, Viber, and WhatsApp). This method was entirely effective for the research hypothesis. A face-to-face interview was also conducted with illiterate women in public hospitals and medical centers. Results: The study result by 376 participating women showed a significant relationship between the level of education and body mass index (BMI) (P = 0.001). No significant relationship was shown between the level of daily dietary intake and BMI. The results also showed a significant association between education and family level of dietary intake (P = 0.003). The study showed a better daily dietary intake with those who do not have a high education level. Conclusions: The study concluded that healthy dietary choices and daily food intake are not related to education level but the mother's nutritional knowledge level.

AbstractObjectives Our aim was to investigate in a real-life setting the use of machine learning for modelling the postprandial glucose concentrations in morbidly obese patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB).Methods As part of the prospective randomized open-label trial (RYSA), data from obese (BMI ≥35 kg/m2) non-diabetic adult participants were included. Glucose concentrations, measured with FreeStyle Libre, were recorded over 14 preoperative and 14 postoperative days. During these periods, 3-day food intake was self-reported. A machine learning model was applied to estimate glycaemic responses to the reported carbohydrate intakes before and after the bariatric surgeries.Results Altogether, 10 participants underwent RYGB and 7 participants OAGB surgeries. The glucose concentrations and carbohydrate intakes were reduced postoperatively in both groups. The relative time spent in hypoglycaemia increased regardless of the operation (RYGB, from 9.2 to 28.2%; OAGB, from 1.8 to 37.7%). Postoperatively, we observed an increase in the height of the fitted response curve and a reduction in its width, suggesting that the same amount of carbohydrates caused a larger increase in the postprandial glucose response and that the clearance of the meal-derived blood glucose was faster, with no clinically meaningful differences between the surgeries.Conclusions A detailed analysis of the glycaemic responses using food diaries has previously been difficult because of the noisy meal data. The utilized machine learning model resolved this by modelling the uncertainty in meal times. Such an approach is likely also applicable in other applications involving dietary data. A marked reduction in overall glycaemia, increase in postprandial glucose response, and rapid glucose clearance from the circulation immediately after surgery are evident after both RYGB and OAGB. Aim: In Saudi Arabia, the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing. Lifestyle modification, including diet and physical activity, is as important as the standard procedure of colonoscopy screening in reducing CRC development. I explored the dietary intake, physical activity, and selected nutritional biomarkers in Saudi patients with colorectal polyps, a precursor of CRC. Methods: Thirty polypectomy patients (aged 35–84 years) were recruited from an endoscopy unit at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Demographic, anthropometric, physical activity, and food frequency data were collected. Plasma C-reactive protein, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, and folate levels were measured. Results: The median body mass index (BMI) of the patients was within the overweight cut-off range. The median consumption of carbohydrate and protein was within the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Median fat consumption was above the RDA, while median fiber intake was below the RDA. Patients met the recommended servings/day of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and protein but exceeded the recommended intake of fats and sweets. Most patients were non-active, with an inadequate level of serum vitamin D. Conclusion: We observed several risk factors previously associated with CRC, including low levels of physical activity, serum vitamin D, and fiber intake, and high BMI and fat intake among polypectomy patients.

Background: Impaired growth and inadequacy of dietary intake in thalassemia patients may affect the quality of life. This study aimed to determine and examine the relationship between dietary intake, nutritional status, and quality of life in in patients with thalassemia major. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from February to October 2020. Twelve respondents who were registered at the Yayasan Thalassemia Indonesia and the blood transfusion unit at Fatmawati Hospital participated. This study conducted a physical examination and distributed food record questionnaires and WHOQOL-BREF. Data analysis was performed using Nutrisurvey 2007 and Fisher’s exact test. Results: The majority of the respondent were male (58.3%), categorized in the age group 5–18 years (58.3%), had normal nutritional status (50%) and quality of life. Interestingly, the respondents had an excess intake of protein and fats, while the intake of energy and carbohydrates was normal. Respondents had less intakes of all micronutrients. Conclusion: The majority of respondents have normal nutritional status and quality of life but have a low intake of micronutrients. Both patients and parents need to be further educated on dietary intake to meet their nutritional needs

Appropriately planned vegetarian diets can be nutritionally adequate; however, without careful planning, some nutrients may be at risk of inadequacy, especially in adolescence, when energy and nutrient requirements are higher relative to body mass. The aim of this study was to compare intakes of at-risk micronutrients in a group of New Zealand female adolescents consuming vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets. A cross-sectional Survey of Nutrition, Dietary Assessment and Lifestyle (SuNDiAL project) was conducted among females aged 15 to 18 years, recruited from across NZ. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements were taken to determine body mass index (BMI; kg/m2). Energy and dietary intake of calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, folate, vitamin A and vitamin B12 (B12) were determined using two 24 h recalls, adjusted to reflect usual intake. In total, 254 adolescents provided dietary intake data, comprising 38 self-identified vegetarians. The majority of the participants were NZ European and Other (NZEO) (78%), lived in neighbourhoods of low to medium deprivation (81.5%), and were a healthy weight (66.5%). Across the total sample, more than 80% did not meet the recommended intake for calcium, with values of 71% for selenium and 58% for folate. Dietary intakes among vegetarians were significantly lower than non-vegetarians, resulting in a higher prevalence of inadequacy for zinc (42% vs. 19%), selenium (92% vs. 67%) and vitamin B12 (40% vs. 16%), respectively. Vegetarians were six times more likely to have inadequate selenium intake, at a three-times-greater risk of having inadequate zinc intake and four times more likely to not meet the recommendations for B12 intake compared to non-vegetarians. In conclusion, adolescents had inadequate intakes of calcium, selenium and folate, whereas vegetarian adolescents had suboptimal intakes of selenium, zinc and B12, leading to an increased risk of deficiency.

Background and purpose: Obesity is one of the major health problems that is highly prevalent in the world. There is controversial evidence about the association between dietary nitrate and nitrite and obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary nitrate and nitrite intake and incidence of obesity phenotypes. Materials and methods: A prospective approach was used in this research that was conducted in participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. The study included 1756 males and females and their nutritional, anthropometry, and biochemical information were recorded every three years and followed for six years. Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was administered to collect the data. General obesity phenotype, abdominal obesity phenotype, Hypertriglyceridemic-Waist Phenotype (HTW), and body adiposity index phenotype were determined. Then, the incidence of obesity phenotypes across tertiles and intakes of nitrate/nitrite was assessed using regression logistic test. Results: The cumulative incidence of HTW phenotypes was 25% after 6 years. The risk of HTW in highest tertiles compared to the lowest tertiles of total nitrate intake and intake of nitrate and nitrite through fruits decreased insignificantly by 6% (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.72 - 1.17), 5% (OR = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.73 - 1.24), and 10% (OR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.69 - 1.17), respectively. Conclusion: Dietary nitrate and nitrite had no effect on the occurrence of HTW, BMI, and general and abdominal obesity phenotypes.

Background: “Early Childhood Caries”(ECC) is a serious global oral health problem affecting children of 71 months of age or younger. ECC has a multifactorial model of causation and diet imparts an intricately specific effect. Aim: The study aims to determine the protective and harmful role of different dietary consumption in the causation of ECC in South Indian children, assessed by the Healthy Eating Index-2005 (HEI-2005). Settings and Design: A pilot study of cross-sectional analytical study design was conducted in a dental college and hospitals in India. Materials and Methods: Hundred healthy South Indian children of 3–6 years age were screened for dental caries by the ICDAS II criteria, dmf/dmfs and pufa index. Participants were divided into three groups according to their caries status such as [Group 1:caries-free, group 2:ECC, group 3:severe ECC (S-ECC)]. Questionnaires were collected with demographic details, 24 h previous dietary record, and a subsequent 3-day chart of dietary consumption. Accordingly, the HEI-2005 score was calculated for each participant. Descriptive statistics was used for analysis of sociodemographic data, Kruskal–Wallis test for multivariate analysis, and for interpreting the total effect of HEI on study groups, logistic regression analysis was used. Results: Caries experience in South Indian children demonstrated a significant association with age. Caries-free children showed significantly higher association with darkgreen/orange vegetables/legumes, milk, and calories from SoFAAS (solid fat, alcohol, and added sugars) than the other groups. Conclusions: The study findings illustrated a prominent protective role played by specific components of the HEI-2005, as healthy dietary intake against dental caries in South Indian children.

The aim of the study – to get acquainted with the nutritional characteristics of hypertension; analyze known publications on nutrition and diet therapy in hypertension. Also, changes in lifestyle are recommended for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and remains one of the major causes of mortality in economically developed countries. One of the most serious health problems today is arterial hypertension, a leading risk factor for myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as the cause of disability and death among people of working age. WHO experts from the 12 largest countries in the world have said that about 20 % of the adult population of the planet suffers from high blood pressure, hypertension "is younger" in recent decades. In this regard, according to researchers, pressure is reduced by 19 % in boys and 16 % in girls. Therefore, the problems of further improving the treatment and prevention of arterial hypertension are extremely relevant and have become the subject of numerous studies, including the areas of nutrition and diet therapy. At present, the main factors of food risk for hypertension are excessive intake of sodium, saturated fatty acids, excess and caloric diet, etc. The article gives recommendations for changing the way of life for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Fatty foods, stomach overload with food, high salt content, water retention in the body, and as a result of increased pressure, lead to an increase in the number of cardiovascular diseases. This review of the literature describes and examines the nutritional features of different countries of the world, examines the effects of diet therapy and provides recommendations for improving the health of the population: limiting sodium intake (no more than 5 g/day); reduce the total amount of liquid (up to 1–1.2 liters per day); maintaining adequate potassium consumption (through fresh fruits and vegetables); consumption of sufficient amounts of calcium, magnesium and other minerals; food fibers; enriching your diet with seafood; slimming (Mediterranean diet with moderate use of red wine); reduction or complete refusal to use foods rich in caffeine; flour products, semi-finished products, etc.; increase in physical activity (walking and running in the fresh air, swimming, cycling, exercises on a bike). Conclusions. Proper nutrition in hypertension is one of the important ways to normalize the functions of the heart and blood vessels, thereby improving the quality of life without leading to fatal results. Nutrition should help to maintain health, meet the needs of the body in nutrients, calories, as well as vitamins and mineral elements.

A total of 603 samples of selected spices from different seasons (winter and summer) were analyzed for the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), total AFs, and tocopherols. The findings revealed that 120 (38.7%) samples from the summer and 136 (46.4%) samples from the winter season were observed to be infected with AFB1 and a large amount of AFs. The highest means of both AFB1 and total Afs were observed in red pepper, i.e., 15.5 ± 3.90 µg/kg and 22.90 ± 4.10 µg/kg, respectively. The minimum averages of AFB1 and total AFs were observed in cloves of 6.32 ± 1.8 and 8.40 ± 1.60 µg/kg, respectively (from the winter season). The seasonal variations in the levels of the total AFs in selected spices were observed to be nonsignificant (p ≥ 0.05), except for the levels in red pepper and ginger samples, which showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). The maximum average of the dietary intake of Afs, 4.80 µg/day/kg, was found in ginger from the winter season in individual females. Furthermore, the findings document that the maximum level of total tocopherol, i.e., 44.8 ± 9.3 mg/100 g, was observed in black pepper from the winter season. A significant difference in the concentration of total tocopherols was observed in selected spices from the summer and the winter seasons (p ≤ 0.05).

Contamination of edible oils with aflatoxins (AFs) is a universal issue due to the detrimental effects of aflatoxins on human health and the fact that edible oils are a major source of fungal growth, particularly storage fungi (Aspergillus sp.). The objective of this study was to assess aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in edible oil used in fried food in order to determine the risk of cancer from AFB1 exposure through cooked food using the FAO/WHO’s and EFSA’s margin of exposure (MOE) quantitative liver cancer risk approaches. Using Mycosep 226 columns and HPLC-FLD, 100 samples of cooking oils (soybean, canola, and sunflower oil) from different food points were analyzed for contamination with aflatoxins. Of all the samples tested, 89% were positive for total aflatoxins and AFB1, with 65% indicating AF concentrations beyond permitted levels. Canola oil was found to contain higher levels of AFB1 and AFs than soybean and sunflower oil. Almost 71 percent of canola oil samples (range of 54.4–281.1 µg/kg) were contaminated with AF levels higher than the proposed limits of the European Union (20 µg/kg). The consumption of canola oil samples used in fried foods had MOE values that were significantly lower as compared to sunflower and soybean oils, indicating that risk reduction is feasible. Additionally, compared to soybean and sunflower oil, canola oil exhibited a greater threat of liver cancer cases linked to AFB1 exposure (17.13 per 100,000 males over 35 and 10.93 per 100,000 females over 35). Using a quantitative liver cancer approach, health risk valuation demonstrated that males and females over the age of 35 are at significant risk of developing liver cancer. The health risk assessment exposed that the males and female over the age of 35 are at considerable risk of liver cancer by using a quantitative liver cancer approach. The innovation of this study lies in the fact that no such study is reported related to liver cancer risk evaluation accompanied with AFB1 exposure from consumed edible oil. As a result, a national strategy must be developed to solve this problem so that edible oil products are subjected to severe regulatory examination.

Dietary surveillance is necessary to determine community needs for nutrition interventions. Yet, the nutrient intake of Saudi children has not been previously investigated. The objective of the present study is to evaluate dietary data of Saudi children and investigate gender differences in nutrient intake. In this cross-sectional study, dietary data of 424 Saudi children (6–12 years of age) were collected using telephone-administered single 24-h dietary recall. Three 24-h dietary recalls were collected from a subsample of 168 children (39⋅6 %) and compared with the Dietary Recommended Intakes (DRIs). Nutrient intakes and proportions of children meeting the DRI requirements were similar and did not vary by children's gender. Over two-thirds of the children had an adequate usual intake of vitamin B12, and over half had adequate intakes (AIs) of vitamin C and phosphorus. On the other hand, our data indicated that low proportions of children consumed adequate usual intakes of magnesium and vitamin E. Over half of the children in our sample met the AI for sodium and vitamin D. Only small proportions of children met the AI for calcium, potassium and fibre. Cholesterol and saturated fat intake exceeded the limits of 300 mg and 10 % of total energy intake by 13⋅7 % (n 23) and 80⋅4 % (n 135) of the sample, respectively. Suboptimal intake of several micronutrients was observed among children, suggesting an urgent need to identify barriers to high-quality diet and to develop evidence-based interventions to promote optimal dietary efficacy for children in Saudi Arabia.

The relationship of chronotype differences with dietary habits and health-related outcomes among elderly people is not fully understood, although sex and generation differences are observed in human chronotype. Accordingly, we analysed the association of chronotype (as assessed by the midpoint of sleep) with dietary intake and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in elderly Japanese women. The subjects in this cross-sectional study were 1618 women aged 65 years and older who were grandmothers or acquaintances of dietetics students. The subjects were classified into quintiles with respect to the midpoint of sleep, from the earliest to the latest quintile. HRQoL was assessed by the Japanese version of the short-form 36-item health survey score. Mental health was assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale. Dietary intake was assessed by a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. A later midpoint of sleep was associated with a lower intake of vitamin D and a higher intake of bread and caffeinated drinks. No correlations were observed between chronotype and other nutrient and food intake. The subjects with a late midpoint of sleep (eveningness) showed poor general health perception (GH) and high CES-D scores. Other HRQoL scores did not differ among groups with different midpoints of sleep. In conclusion, chronotype as assessed by the midpoint of sleep is associated with poor GH and depressive tendencies in elderly Japanese women. Additionally, a few associations were found between dietary intake and chronotype in elderly Japanese women.

Little is known on the association between frequency of yogurt consumption and dietary intake in the United Kingdom (UK). The aim of the present study was to examine associations between frequency of yogurt consumption and dietary outcomes in children (n 1912, age 9⋅6 ± 0⋅1 years, 51 % boys) and adults (n 2064, age 48⋅7 ± 0⋅5 years, 49 % men) using cross-sectional data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey rolling programme year 7 to year 9 (2014/15–2016/17). The frequency of yogurt consumption was determined by the number of days with yogurt reported in 4-d food diaries and participants were classified as non-eaters, occasional eaters (1–2 d of consumption) or regular eaters (3–4 d of consumption). Dietary outcomes were estimated from food diaries. The frequency of yogurt consumption was positively associated with intake of key vitamins and minerals such as thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iodine in both children and adults (all P < 0⋅0018), as well as higher intake of total dairy (P < 0⋅0001 for both children and adults). Regular yogurt eaters were more likely to meet or exceed nutrient recommendations for vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, riboflavin, folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iodine (all P < 0⋅001). Diet quality was positively associated with frequency of yogurt consumption in children (P = 0⋅045) and adults (P < 0⋅001). No association between yogurt consumption and free sugar intake was found (P = 0⋅49 for children and P = 0⋅29 for adults). The study suggests that frequency of yogurt consumption is associated with better dietary intake and diet quality in children and adults in the UK.

Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction are prevalent conditions in older people and may adversely influence the intake of certain foods, notably fruit and vegetables. Here, we aimed to investigate whether xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction were associated with a lower intake of fruit and vegetables. The study included 621 community-dwelling adults, mean age 75⋅2 ± 6⋅4 years, 58⋅9 % female, who had participated in the Copenhagen City Heart Study follow-up, and undergone interviews regarding food intake (preceding month), oral and general health (xerostomia, taste alterations, diseases, medication, alcohol consumption and smoking), clinical oral examination and measurements of unstimulated and chewing-stimulated whole saliva flow rates. The average total energy intake (8⋅4 ± 2⋅7 MJ) and protein energy percentage (14⋅8 ± 3⋅1 %) were slightly below recommendations. The average fruit (234⋅7 ± 201⋅2 g/d) and vegetables (317⋅3 ± 157⋅4 g/d) intakes were within recommendations. Xerostomia and hyposalivation were more prevalent in women than in men (16⋅4 v. 7⋅1 %, P < 0⋅001 and 40⋅7 v. 27⋅5 %, P < 0⋅001). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that older age (β −0⋅009, se 0⋅003, P = 0⋅005), smoking (β −0⋅212, se 0⋅060, P = 0⋅0005) and wearing complete dentures/being partially or fully edentulous (β −0⋅141, se 0⋅048, P = 0⋅003), but neither xerostomia nor salivary flow rates were associated with an inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, after adjustment for covariates. Older age, smoking, tooth loss and denture-wearing were stronger determinants of low fruit and vegetable intakes than xerostomia and salivary hypofunction supporting the importance of dietary counselling and maintenance of oral health and an adequate masticatory performance.

School meals are a major source of dietary intake for low-income students at high obesity risk. Associations between added sugar and obesity are well known, and the National School Lunch Program prohibits added sugar in fruit and juice; yet, no added sugar limits exist for other meal components. This study measured students’ added sugar selection and consumption in school lunches and compared % of daily calories consumed from added sugar to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommendations. In October 2016, this cross-sectional study was conducted in six Virginia Title I elementary schools (>90% racial/ethnic minorities; 100% free meals). Digital imagery plate waste methods assessed lunch consumption in N = 1155, 1st–5th graders. Added sugar (g, %kcal) in foods and beverages selected and consumed were quantified, and kcal of added sugar consumed was compared to DGA recommendations. Students consumed an average 6.6 g of added sugar from foods (grade differences; q = 0.0012), and 3.6 g of added sugar from beverages. Added sugar comprised ~10% of school lunch calories consumed from foods and ~35% of school lunch calories consumed from beverages. Added sugar in the total school lunch meal comprised ~2.5% of student’s recommended daily calorie needs; thus, ~7.5% of daily calories from added sugar remained before students would have exceeded the DGA. Total added sugar consumption was within daily DGA recommendations. Findings contribute to previous reports that school-provided lunches are low in added sugar. Future research should examine added sugar consumed in school breakfast and lunch separately and combined.
