Asymmetric mandibular prognathism is a clinically common skeletal dentomaxillofacial deformity. Unilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (USSRO) is an effective alternative procedure to bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) for some patients. However, the biomechanical effect of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of USSRO has not been fully studied. This study aims to evaluate the stress distribution changes in the TMJ of asymmetric mandibular prognathism treated with BSSRO/USSRO, to validate the clinical feasibility of USSRO. Nineteen patients with mandibular prognathism patients who were treated with BSSRO (n=12) and USSRO (n=7) had preoperative and postoperative computed tomographic scanning. Preoperative and postoperative 3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) of functional TMJ movements were made on one BSSRO patient and one USSRO patient. In all patients, the ANB angle and mandibular deviation were significantly improved postoperatively. There was no significant difference in the postoperative ANB angle and mandibular deviation between the BSSRO group and the USSRO group. In two preoperative FEA models, the maximum stresses of non-deviation side TMJ structures were greater than the deviation side during functional movements. The unbalanced stress distribution was corrected postoperatively in both BSSRO/USSRO FE models. Both BSSRO/USSRO can improve the ANB angle and mandibular deviation. The bilateral TMJ structure in patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism had unbalanced stress, which could be significantly improved with the USSRO as effectively as BSSRO.

Phenolic compounds are considered the main bioactive components in kiwifruit. In order to well understand the accumulation pattern of health-beneficial phenolics, and to obtain high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics, the changes of physicochemical properties, phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes of “Donghong” kiwifruits during maturation were systematically investigated. Noticeable variations in physicochemical properties and phenolic profiles were observed throughout the maturation stages of “Donghong” kiwifruit. According to the HPLC analysis, phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, (−)-epicatechin, procyanidin B2, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside, gallic acid, neochlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid, were found in “Donghong” kiwifruit, while chlorogenic acid was the most abundant phenolic compound. Considering the accumulation patterns of both total phenolics and soluble solids content, the optimum harvest time of kiwifruit with relatively high level of health-beneficial components was determined. Furthermore, “Donghong” kiwifruit exerted remarkable antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on pancreatic lipase and α-glucosidase. Indeed, the Pearson’s correlation showed that chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, (−)-epicatechin, and quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside could be major contributors to the antioxidant activity and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes. Results are beneficial for better understanding of the accumulation patterns of health-beneficial phenolic compounds, which can aid in the targeting of specific developmental stages with an optimal phenolic profile for the production of health-beneficial products.

In order to well understand the physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of polysaccharides (OPPs) from different cultivars of okra collected in China, the chemical characteristics, rheological properties, antioxidant activities, in vitro binding properties, and in vitro inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase of polysaccharides from five representative okra cultivars, including ‘Lvjian’, ‘Kalong8’, ‘Shuiguo’, ‘Taiwanwufu’, and ‘Kalong3’, were investigated and compared. Results showed that the constituent monosaccharides of OPPs were similar, which composed of rhamnose, galacturonic acid, galactose, and arabinose. However, their weight-average molecular weights varied from 2.76 × 103 to 4.20 × 103 kDa, and from 0.11 × 103 to 0.90 × 103 kDa, respectively. The uronic acids and degrees of esterification of OPPs ranged from 39.32% to 61.68%, and from 21.66% to 30.02%, respectively. OPPs exhibited typical shear-thinning behavior and viscoelastic properties. Furthermore, OPPs exhibited remarkable antioxidant activities, in vitro binding capacities, and inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, which might be attributed to their relatively high content of uronic acids, high degrees of esterification, and high molecular weights. Results are helpful for better understanding of the physicochemical structures and bioactivities of OPPs, and OPPs had good application prospects as functional food ingredients for industrial applications.

Non-starch polysaccharides are considered the main bioactive ingredients in kiwifruits. In order to well understand the chemical structures and antioxidant activities of non-starch polysaccharides from different varieties of kiwifruits (KPSs), the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of KPSs extracted by hot water extraction from Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward, A. chinensis cv. Hort16A, A. chinensis cv. Jinshi, A. chinensis cv. Hongshi, A. polygama , A. macrosperma , and A. arguta were investigated and compared. Results showed that extraction yields and contents of total uronic acids in KPSs ranged from 2.60% to 5.52%, and from 35.07% to 42.20%, respectively. Molecular weights and intrinsic viscosities of KPSs ranged from 1.405 × 10 5 to 1.620 × 10 6 Da, and from 0.34 dL/g to 1.24 dL/g, respectively. The dominant constituent monosaccharides of KPSs were galacturonic acid, arabinose, and galactose. Furthermore, KPSs from kiwifruits, especially KPSs extracted from A. arguta , exerted remarkable 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid and nitric oxide radical scavenging activities, which might be partially attributed to their high content of unmethylated galacturonic acids. Results are helpful for better understanding of the chemical structures and antioxidant activities of KPSs, and KPSs had potential to be further explored as natural antioxidants for the application in the functional food industry.

Introduction We discuss our findings on the retention of the medially displaced residual condyle during the treatment of type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis, as well as the postoperative results observed during follow-up. Materials and methods Thirty-two patients with type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis that met the inclusion criteria of the study were included as subjects. The morphological integrity of the medially displaced residual condyle was verified in all of the participating patients through the use of cone beam computed tomography. The duration of the ankylosis ranged from 2 to 12 years. The maximum length that patients were able to open their mouths ranged from 6 mm to 14 mm. The surgical treatments used in this report included the separation of bony fusions between the condyle and the glenoid fossa, resection of the ankylosed sites, preservation of the displaced condyles in their medial position and suturing the remains of the disc to its typical position or taking the temporalis myofascial flap instead. The long-term results were evaluated by computed tomography and clinical follow-up examinations. Results Three-year postoperative follow-up examinations were performed for all of the patients included in this study. No recurrences were observed in the patients who adhered to the postoperative therapeutic advice. Patients had an average maximal mouth opening distance of 34.50 ± 5.75 mm as recorded during the final follow-up examination. Conclusions The released medially residual condyle can still function normally in temporomandibular joint movement and without reankylosis after a bone fusion resection. The displaced condyle should thus be preserved instead of being removed during the treatment of type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

The root of Chuanminshen violaceum is used as an important edible and medicinal plant in China. However, its leaves are generally considered byproducts, and therefore do not have a use. Thus, the phenolic compounds in the methanolic extracts (CVLMs) and the chemical characteristics of crude polysaccharides (CVLPs) from the leaves of C. violaceum and their in vitro antioxidant activities were explored. The results showed that chlorogenic acid and rutin were the major individual phenolic compounds in the leaves, which ranged from 1.22 &plusmn, 0.03 to 2.87 &plusmn, 0.04 mg/g DW, and from 2.25 &plusmn, 0.04 to 4.03 &plusmn, 0.05 mg/g DW, respectively. Meanwhile, the extraction yields of CVLPs from the leaves ranged from 4.73% to 5.41%. The CVLPs consisted of mannose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose, suggesting the existence of pectic polysaccharides. Furthermore, both CVLMs and CVLPs exhibited strong antioxidant activities. Chlorogenic acid and rutin were major contributors to the antioxidant activities of CVLMs, and the antioxidant activities of CVLPs were closely correlated to their &alpha, 1,4-D-galactosiduronic linkages. The results are beneficial for understanding the chemical properties and in vitro antioxidant activities of CVLMs and CVLPs. The leaves of C. violaceum have potential to be developed as natural antioxidants.

In this study, the reaction conditions of sulfur trioxide-pyridine (SO3-Pyr) method for the modification of Qingke β-glucans (THB) were optimized by response surface methodology, and effects of different degrees of substitution (low, medium, and high) on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant activities, and in vitro hypolipidemic activities of THB were investigated. The optimal reaction conditions to obtain the high degree of substitution of sulfated β-glucans were as follows: ratio of SO3-Pyr to THB of 16.88 g/g, reaction time of 2.03 h, and reaction temperature of 57.54 °C. Results showed that sulfated modification significantly affected the water solubilities, apparent viscosities, molecular weights, and molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides of THB. Besides, the sulfated THB exhibited much better antioxidant activities (DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging activities, and reducing powers), in vitro binding properties (fat, cholesterol, and bile-acid binding capacities), and pancreatic lipase inhibition activities than that of THB. Indeed, the sulfated THB with higher degree of substitution has stronger antioxidant activities and in vitro hypolipidemic activities. Results suggested that the sulfated modification could be an efficient approach for the improvement of functional properties of THB, and sulfated THB could be further explored as functional food ingredients for industrial applications.

Chuanminshen violaceum has been used as an important traditional Chinese medicine and a popular tonic food in China. Polysaccharides are considered the major bioactive components in C. violaceum. In this study, in order well understand the chemical structures and bioactivities of non-starch polysaccharides in C. violaceum (CVPs), the physicochemical structures, antioxidant activities, and immunomodulatory activities of CVPs in C. violaceum collected from different regions of China were investigated and compared. Results showed that the constituent monosaccharides and Fourier transform infrared spectra of CVPs in C. violaceum collected from different regions were similar. However, their molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides, molecular weights, and contents of uronic acids were different. Furthermore, CVPs exerted remarkable antioxidant activities (ABTS and nitric oxide radical scavenging capacities) and immunomodulatory activities (promoted production of nitric oxide, IL-6, and TNF-α from RAW 264.7 macrophages in vitro). Meanwhile, the antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of CVPs extracted from C. violaceum also varied by cultivated regions. Moreover, results indicated that the antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of CVPs were closely correlated to their α-1,4-d-galactosiduronic linkages. Results are helpful for better understanding of the structure-bioactivity relationships of CVPs, and beneficial for the improvement of their applications in pharmaceutical and functional food industries.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in facial profile development between unoperated adult cleft palate (UACP) patients and normal controls and to analyse the reasons for the differences.A total of 50 individuals with a unilateral cleft palate and 20 normal controls were selected to undergo angular measurement of their facial profiles. Data with significant differences between the two groups were analysed.Seven angle measurements of the facial profile showed that the mid-facial protrusion of the UACP patients had no significant differences from the control group (p 0.05). But their angle of the medium face (N'-Trg-Sn) was significantly lower than the non-cleft controls (p 0.05), suggesting a worse vertical development of the middle face. A significantly larger nasal tip angle (Cm-Sn/N'-Prn) for UACP patients suggested they had a rounder and blunter nasal tip (p 0.05). The soft tissue facial angle and chin-lip angle of UACP patients had significant differences from non-cleft controls (p 0.05), but the head position angle (Sn-Sm-THP) had no significant difference between two groups (p 0.05), which suggested a steep mandibular plane for UACP patients but without severe retraction of the chin.The development of facial protrusions in UACP patients is similar to that in normal adults, but the vertical development in the middle face is insufficient. Such hypoplasia may be related to the intrinsic deficiency of the maxilla. In order to obtain high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics, physicochemical properties, phenolic profiles, antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes (pancreatic lipase and &alpha, glucosidase), of fourteen different types of kiwifruit obtained from China were systematically investigated and compared. Noticeable variations in the fruits&rsquo, physicochemical properties and phenolic profiles were observed among them. The total phenolic content of Actinidia chinensis cv. Hongshi, A. chinensis cv. Jinshi, and A. chinensis cv. Jinlong were 16.52 &plusmn, 0.26 mg GAE/g DW (dry weight), 13.38 &plusmn, 0.20 mg GAE/g DW, and 11.02 &plusmn, 0.05 mg GAE/g DW, respectively, which were much higher than those of the other tested kiwifruits. According to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, phenolic compounds, including procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, (&minus, )-epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, and quercetin-3-rhamnoside, were found to be the major compounds in kiwifruits, while procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, and chlorogenic acid were the most abundant phenolic compounds. Furthermore, all the tested kiwifruits exerted remarkable antioxidant capacities and inhibitory effects on pancreatic lipase and &alpha, glucosidase. Indeed, A. chinensis cv. Hongshi, Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinshi, and Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinlong exhibited much better antioxidant capacities and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes than those of the other tested kiwifruits. Particularly, A. polygama showed the highest inhibitory activity on &alpha, glucosidase. Therefore, Actinidia chinensis cv. Hongshi, Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinshi, and Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinlong, as well as A. polygama could be important dietary sources of natural antioxidants and natural inhibitors against pancreatic lipase and &alpha, glucosidase, which is helpful for meeting the growing demand for high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics in China.

Decline in successful conception decreases more rapidly after 38 years of age owing to follicular depletion and decreased oocyte quality. However, limited information is available regarding the underlying mechanism and the useful treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of growth hormone supplementation on oocyte maturation in vivo in aged and young mice and to determine its effect on mitochondrial function. The influence of three different doses of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) (0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks before ovarian stimulation was analyzed. Superovulated oocytes were released from the oviduct of 12-week-old and 40-week-old female C57BL/6J mice 14–16 h after administration of human chorionic gonadotropin. Ovarian follicle and morphological analysis and oocyte maturation parameters were then evaluated. This study is the first, to our knowledge, to report that medium- and high-dose rhGH significantly increases antral follicles in aged mice but anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels. Furthermore, derived oocytes, MII-stage oocyte rate, ATP levels, mitochondrial membrane potential and frequencies of homogeneous mitochondrial distribution increased. In contrast, in both aged and young mice, the mtDNA copy numbers per oocyte were similar before rhGH administration, and upon saline administration, they did not differ significantly. We conclude that medium-dose rhGH supplementation before standard ovarian stimulation regimens improves oocyte quality in aged mice, probably by enhancing mitochondrial functionality.

OBJECTIVE This study is to present experiences of using anterior maxillary segmental distraction osteogenesis (AMSDO) with internal distractors for treatment of maxillary hypoplasia in patients with repaired cleft palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 42 patients of maxillary hypoplasia with repaired cleft palate were included in this study, and underwent AMSDO. Cephalometric analysis and speech quality assessments were performed to evaluate the changes after AMSDO and its long-term effect on stability. RESULTS All cases had successfully accomplished AMSDO. Propofol, an intravenous anesthetic agent widely used in clinical practice, is the preferred anesthetic for asthmatic patients. This study was designed to determine the protective effect and underlying mechanisms of propofol on airway inflammation in a mast cell-dependent mouse model of allergic asthma. Mice were sensitized by ovalbumin (OVA) without alum and challenged with OVA three times. Propofol was given intraperitoneally 0.5 h prior to OVA challenge. The inflammatory cell count and production of cytokines in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected. The changes of lung histology and key molecules of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/reactive oxygen species (ROS)/NF-κB signaling pathway were also measured. The results showed that propofol significantly decreased the number of eosinophils and the levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, and TNF-α in BALF. Furthermore, propofol significantly attenuated airway inflammation, as characterized by fewer infiltrating inflammatory cells and decreased mucus production and goblet cell hyperplasia. Meanwhile, the expression of TLR4, and its downstream signaling adaptor molecules—–myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and NF-κB, were inhibited by propofol. The hydrogen peroxide and methane dicarboxylic aldehyde levels were decreased by propofol, and the superoxide dismutase activity was increased in propofol treatment group. These findings indicate that propofol may attenuate airway inflammation by inhibiting the TLR4/MyD88/ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway in a mast cell-dependent mouse model of allergic asthma.

In this study, the phenolic profiles and bioactivities of five representative cultivars of okra collected in China were investigated. Noticeable variations of phenolic compounds and their bioactivities were observed among these different cultivars of okra. The contents of total flavonoids (TFC) in &ldquo, Shuiguo&rdquo, &ldquo, Kalong 8&rdquo, Kalong 3&rdquo, Wufu&rdquo, and &ldquo, Royal red&rdquo, ranged from 1.75 to 3.39 mg RE/g DW, of which &ldquo, showed the highest TFC. Moreover, five individual phenolic compounds were found in okra by high performance liquid chromatography analysis, including isoquercitrin, protocatechuic acid, quercetin-3-O-gentiobioside, quercetin, and rutin, while isoquercitrin and quercetin-3-O-gentiobioside were detected as the main phenolic compounds in okra. Moreover, all tested okra exhibited significant antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, 2,2&rsquo, azino-bis (3-ethylenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power) and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes (lipase, &alpha, glucosidase, and &alpha, amylase). Indeed, &ldquo, exhibited much better antioxidant activities and inhibitory activities on digestive enzymes, which might be attributed to its high TFC. Results suggested that okra, especially &ldquo, could be developed as natural antioxidants and inhibitors against hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in the fields of functional foods and pharmaceuticals, which could meet the increasing demand for high-quality okra with health-promoting properties in China.

In order to evaluate effects of extraction techniques on the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of kiwifruit polysaccharides (KPS), and further explore KPS as functional food ingredients, both microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) were optimized for the extraction of KPS. Furthermore, the physicochemical structures and antioxidant activities of KPS extracted by different techniques were investigated. The optimal extraction conditions of UAE and MAE for the extraction of KPS were obtained by response surface methodology. Different extraction techniques significantly affected the contents of uronic acids, molecular weights, molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides, and the degree of esterification of KPS. Results showed that KPS exhibited remarkable DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and reducing power. The high antioxidant activities observed in KPS extracted by the MAE method (KPS-M) might be partially attributed to its low molecular weight and high content of unmethylated galacturonic acid. Results suggested that the MAE method could be a good potential technique for the extraction of KPS with high antioxidant activity, and KPS could be further explored as functional food ingredients.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a multifactorial malignancy closely associated with genetic factors and Epstein-Barr virus infection. To identify the common genetic variants linked to NPC susceptibility, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 277 NPC patients and 285 healthy controls within the Taiwanese population, analyzing 480,365 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Twelve statistically significant SNPs were identified and mapped to chromosome 6p21.3. Associations were replicated in two independent sets of case-control samples. Two of the most significant SNPs (rs2517713 and rs2975042; p(combined) = 3.9 x 10(-20) and 1.6 x 10(-19), respectively) were located in the HLA-A gene. Moreover, we detected significant associations between NPC and two genes: specifically, gamma aminobutyric acid b receptor 1 (GABBR1) (rs29232; p(combined) = 8.97 x 10(-17)) and HLA-F (rs3129055 and rs9258122; p(combined) = 7.36 x 10(-11) and 3.33 x 10(-10), respectively). Notably, the association of rs29232 remained significant (residual p5 x 10(-4)) after adjustment for age, gender, and HLA-related SNPs. Furthermore, higher GABA(B) receptor 1 expression levels can be found in the tumor cells in comparison to the adjacent epithelial cells (p0.001) in NPC biopsies, implying a biological role of GABBR1 in NPC carcinogenesis. To our knowledge, it is the first GWAS report of NPC showing that multiple loci (HLA-A, HLA-F, and GABBR1) within chromosome 6p21.3 are associated with NPC. Although some of these relationships may be attributed to linkage disequilibrium between the loci, the findings clearly provide a fresh direction for the study of NPC development.

Purpose: To observe the influence on the retinal ganglion cells induced by 2,450-MHz microwave. The radiant intensities were 10, 30 and 60 mW · cm–2. Methods: Retinal ganglion cells were cultured in vitro and divided into 4 groups, of which 3 were exposed to different intensities of microwaves and 1 was the control group. The morphological variation of cells was observed by invert microscope. The survival rate was assessed by trypan blue. Annexin V-PI 2-color flow cytometry was used to detect the percentage of earlier apoptosis cells after radiation. Results: The changes in the morphology of all cells were observed after radiation. The cell survival rates were reduced and the earlier apoptosis increased with growing microwave intensity. Conclusions: The 2,450-MHz microwave will cause damage to retinal ganglion cells in a dose-dependent manner.

TiO2 is one kind of semiconductor-based photocatalyst. TiO2 shows relatively high reactivity and chemical stability under ultraviolet (UV) light. However TiO2 is a poor absorber of photons in visible light. In order to improve the absorption efficiency, the coatings of TiO2/WO3, WO3 and TiO2 on ITO were prepared by liquid phase deposition (LPD) and dip coating method, their microstructure, surface properties, photoelectrochemical properties are investigated in this paper. XRD results showed that the phases on the composite coatings are mainly anatase, rutile and WO3 respectively, the SEM results showed that the coatings of TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 are distributed evenly on the materials surface. The electrochemical experiment results showed that open circuit potential of TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 with presence of the UV light illumination were about -343 mV and –650 mV respectively, comparatively the rest potential of 304 stainless steel is about 48 mV, which means that the TiO2 or TiO2/WO3 coatings can protect 304 stainless steel from corrosion, and TiO2/WO3 coatings retained for a while anticorrosion even absence of UV light.

However TiO2 is poor absorber of photons in the solar spectrum. In order to improve the absorption efficiency, the coatings of TiO2/ZnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4and TiO2 on ITO were prepared by dip coating method, their microstructure, surface properties, photocurrent and photo absorption are investigated in this paper. XRD results show that the phases on the composite coatings are mainly TiO2 and ZnFe2O4 and the main phase on ZnFe2O4 and TiO2 coatings is ZnFe2O4 and TiO2 respectively, the SEM results show that the coatings of TiO2 and TiO2/ZnFe2O4 are distributed evenly on the materials surface and the AFM results show that the grain size is about 20nm. The experimental results also show that the absorption wavelength of composite coatings of TiO2/ZnFe2O4 is 454nm, which is larger than that of TiO2 coatings (370nm). Under the irradiation of Xe lamp light, a photocurrent of 27µA/cm2 on the materials surface could be obtained.

Development of reliable diagnostic bio-markers for schizophrenia remains a diagnostic challenge. Serum NGF and IL-2 were analyzed to examine the diagnostic efficiency and predictive capability of these two biomarkers in relation to schizophrenia diagnosis. Thirty neuroleptic naive subjects with first-episode schizophrenia, thirty patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and twenty-eight healthy control subjects participated in the study. One-way ANOVA demonstrated significantly lower serum IL-2 and NGF among schizophrenic patients and patients with MDD compared with healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to ascertain diagnostic efficiency of serum IL-2 and NGF levels. Area under the ROC curve (AUC) revealed a high level of differentiation between schizophrenic patients and healthy controls for both IL-2 and NGF serum concentrations. Diagnostic efficiency of combined NGF and IL-2 serum levels was also high in schizophrenic patients compared with healthy controls. Serum NGF and IL-2 are promising as potential screening or diagnostic biomarkers for schizophrenia and may be a useful adjunct for clinical assessment.

Objective.The relationship among serum uric acid (SUA), metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear. We examined whether SUA level is an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease and whether the association between SUA and metabolic syndrome is affected by kidney function.Methods.We analyzed 28,745 subjects (17,478 men, 11,267 women, age 20–49 yrs) who underwent health examinations at this hospital between 2000 and 2007. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA level > 7.7 mg/dl in men or > 6.6 mg/dl in women. Kidney function was assessed by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study equation modified for Chinese subjects. Impaired renal function with low GFR was defined as eGFR < 90 ml/min/1.73 m2. The UA-low GFR groups were defined according to the observed combination of hyperuricemia and low GFR: Group A (absence of both hyperuricemia and low GFR); Group B (presence of low GFR but no hyperuricemia); Group C (presence of hyperuricemia but not low GFR); and Group D (presence of both hyperuricemia and low GFR).Results.The prevalence of hyperuricemia, metabolic syndrome, and impaired kidney function with low GFR was 20.3% (27.6% in men, 8.9% in women), 7.6% (10.6% in men, 3.0% in women), and 9.9% (11.6% in men, 7.1% in women), respectively. The Pearson correlation between SUA and eGFR was only −0.26 (−0.21 in men, −0.22 in women; p < 0.001). In men, the age-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of metabolic syndrome was 1.41 (Group B), 2.45 (Group C), and 2.58 (Group D) in comparison with Group A. In women, the age-adjusted OR of metabolic syndrome was 0.83 (Group B), 5.47 (Group C), and 3.31 (Group D) in comparison with Group A.Conclusion.Hyperuricemia is prevalent in the Taiwan population. Hyperuricemia is only weakly associated with renal function, but is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome with or without a low eGFR.
