Oromaxillofacial hydatid cysts are rare, even in countries where echinococcosis is endemic. This study aimed to describe an isolated oromaxillofacial hydatid cyst and to discuss the epidemiology, clinical features, and treatment thereof. The authors report the case of a 12 year-old boy who presented with a 2 week history of an enlarging hydatid cyst in the parapharyngeal space extending to the neck, with no pulmonary or hepatic involvement. We present our clinical findings, diagnostic techniques, and treatment and review the relevant literature. Forty-one cases, with a male:female ratio of 1.21:1, have been reported, mostly in patients aged 20 to 40 years (both sexes). Oromaxillofacial hydatid cysts are most commonly located in the parotid gland (19.51%, n = 8), submandibular region including the submandibular gland (17.07%, n = 7), and infratemporal fossa (14.63%, n = 6). Only 2 (4.88%) cases of hydatid cysts in the parapharyngeal space have been reported before. Although isolated parapharyngeal space hydatid cysts are rare, oromaxillofacial surgeons should consider relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to ensure complete resection.

Glucocorticoid (GC) has been widely used in clinical work due to its anti-inflammatory and immune-inhibitory properties. However, long-term or high-dose administration is associated with side effects, such as GC-induced osteoporosis (GIOP), which causes great pain for and poses a heavy financial burden on patients. We sought to investigate the potential effects of strontium on GIOP and further explore its underlying mechanisms, including its reversal of the inhibitory effect of GC on osteogenesis of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). We incubated BMSCs with Dexamethasone (DEX) in combination with or without strontium and then measured osteogenic and adipogenic gene expression levels by RT-qPCR and Western blot. We added a specific ERK signaling pathway inhibitor, U0126, to evaluate the involvement of that pathway. Strontium promoted osteogenic differentiation and matrix mineralization in DEX-treated BMSCs, accompanied by upregulation of RUNX2, Osx, ALP, BSP, COL1A1, and OCN. DEX blocked the expression of several osteogenesis-related marker genes by activating the ERK signaling pathway. U0126 attenuated the suppression of osteogenesis in DEX-treated BMSCs. These results suggested that strontium could enhance osteogenic differentiation and matrix mineralization by counteracting DEX's inhibitory effect on osteogenesis via the ERK signaling pathway. Therefore, strontium might be a promising therapeutic agent for GIOP.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Fourteen patients with SC of the TMJ were included in the study. Clinical and MRI features were analysed and divided into three types based on MRI classification: type I with loose bodies, type II with homogeneous masses, and type III with a mixture of loose bodies and homogeneous masses. All SCs occurred in the superior compartment of the TMJ. There were two patients (14%) categorised as type I, five (36%) as type II and seven (50%) as type III. Four patients (29%) had disc perforation, and nine had bone erosion; among those nine, seven (78%) had type III and two (22%) type II. Histological examination showed inflammation and calcification in the synovial membrane and, and cartilage of the hyaline type in all cases. MRI has advantages in the diagnosis of SC.

ObjectiveTo compare the knee shape and bone parameters between knee prosthesis products from overseas companies and a Chinese patient’s knee, and to apply the anatomical basis for Chinese knee prosthesis design.MethodsThree-dimensional digital models were built, including prosthesis products for a normal adult. The relevant anatomy index was measured, and physical parameter, radiographic, geometric, knee kinematic, and distal geometry data were collected on the femur and tibia.ResultsThe width of the femoral condyle (WFC), width of the medial femoral condyle (WMFC), width of the lateral femoral condyle (WLFC), depth of the intercondylar fossa (DICF), sagittal length of the medial femoral condyle (SLMFC), sagittal length of the lateral femoral condyle (SLLFC), angle of the medial femoral condyle (AMFC), and angle of the lateral femoral condyle (ALFC) in the femur and the transverse diameter (ML) and anteroposterior diameter (AP) of the tibial bone were measured. These parameters were significantly lower in the normal group compared with the prosthesis product model group.ConclusionWhen using an imported knee prosthesis, the osteotomy angle may not fit perfectly. Use of an imported prosthesis may be an important factor in the increasing failure of knee arthroplasty in China.

The purposes of this study were to establish and to explore the biological basis of the chronic stress-induced premature ovarian failure (POF) model and to explore the therapeutic effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Muniziqi. Sexually matured female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with spinach and cilantro in cold and wet conditions for about 20 weeks until a chronic stress (CS) model was established. The CS rats were divided into a POF stress model group and a stress model group according to weekly biological characteristics and hormone level detection ( luteinizing hormone [LH], follicle stimulating hormone [FSH], and estrogen [E2]). To investigate the therapeutic effect of Muniziqi, the POF disease stress model group was divided into the high-, medium-, and low-drug intervention groups. The results showed that chronic stresses (special food, cold, damp) can lead to POF disease. The traditional Chinese medicine Muniziqi could not only improve the reproductive hormone level disorder, but also improve the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis. The underlying mechanism may be a change in the E2, LH, and FSH hormone levels in serum and lower expression of ovarian premature aging-related protein PFN-1.

The intermingling of regenerated nerve fibers inside nerve grafts is the main reason for mismatched nerve fibers. This is one of the key factors affecting limb function recovery after nerve injury. Previous research has shown that the accuracy of axon regeneration can be improved by a bionic structural implant. To this aim, iodine and freeze-drying high-resolution micro-computed tomography was performed to visualize the 3D topography of the New Zealand rabbit sciatic nerve (25 mm). A series of 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-custom anatomy-based nerve conduits (CANCs) were fabricated based on the anatomical structure of the nerve fascicle. The match index, luminal surface, and mechanical properties of CANCs were evaluated before implanting in a 10-mm gap of the sciatic nerve. Recovery was evaluated by histomorphometric analyses, electrophysiological study, gastrocnemius muscle weight recovery ratio, and behavioral assessments at 12 and 24 weeks postoperatively. The accuracy of nerve regeneration was determined by changes in fluorescence-labeled profile number during simultaneous retrograde tracing. Our results showed that the optimal preprocessing condition for high-resolution micro-computed tomography visualization was treatment of the sciatic nerve with 40% Lugol's solution for 3 days followed by lyophilization for 2 days. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the match index was highest in the 3-CANC group, followed by the 2-, 1-, and 4-CANC groups. The luminal surface was lowest in the 1-CANC group. Mechanical properties (transverse compressive and bending properties) were higher in the 3- and 4-CANC groups than in the 1-CANC group. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the recovery (morphology of regenerated fibers, compound muscle action potential, gastrocnemius muscle weight recovery ratio, pain-related autotomy behaviors, and range of motion) in the 3-CANC group was superior to the other CANC groups, and achieved the same therapeutic effect as the autograft. The simultaneous retrograde tracing results showed that the percentages of double-labeled profiles of the 2-, 3-, and 4-CANC groups were comparatively lower than that of the 1-CANC group, which indicates that regenerated nerve fascicles were less intermingled in the 2-, 3-, and 4-CANC groups. These findings demonstrate that the visualization of the rabbit sciatic nerve can be achieved by iodine and freeze-drying high-resolution micro-computed tomography, and that this method can be used to design CANCs with different channels that are based on the anatomical structure of the nerve. Compared with the 1-CANC, 3-CANC had a higher match index and luminal surface, and improved the accuracy of nerve regeneration by limiting the intermingling of the regenerated fascicles. Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of the Orthofix limb reconstruction system (LRS) versus the Ilizarov external fixator on osteomyelitis of a tibial bone defect. Materials and methods Among 153 patients hospitalized for bone lengthening therapy from January 1, 1996 to January 1, 2015, 129 patients were selected for a retrospective analysis. Forty-three of the candidate patients were treated using the Orthofix LRS and the other 86 were treated using an Ilizarov external fixator. The average follow-up was 96 months. We evaluated the patients at follow-up visits, and compared the length of time the patients wore the fixation devices. We also examined the scores of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) tests and a Self-rated Anxiety Scale (SAS), the range of motion, and the incidence of pin track infections. Results The results indicated that both approaches were effective for treating the bone defect. Compared with the patients who wore an Ilizarov fixator for the treatment of post-traumatic osteomyelitis, those who wore an Orthofix LRS tended to be more satisfied with their quality of life and the outcome after the operation. Conclusion Although both approaches were effective for treating the bone defect, the overall patient outcomes were superior for the Orthofix LRS, suggesting that it should be considered as the first option in the treatment of traumatic osteomyelitis of the tibial diaphysis.

Objective The present study explored the correlation between FBG level with clinicopathological features and prognosis, a total of 205 OSCC patients were included retrospectively. Materials and methods 205 patients who were admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Surgery from January 2008 to December 2019, were enrolled. ROC curve analysis was used to obtain the optimal cutoff value for FBG; The Cox proportional hazard regression model for the risk factors affecting prognosis. Results Cox proportional regression models univariate analysis showed that age, treatment, neck lymphatic dissection, surgical margin, FBG, BMI were positive predictors, while primary tumor size, differentiation, tumor recurrence, drinking were negative predictors; on multivariable Cox regression analysis, tumor recurrence, BMI, FBG, surgical margin and alcohol consumption were independently and significantly related to the outcome of OSCC. Conclusions The FBG is an independent prognostic factor for patients with OSCC. To improve the overall survival of patients with OSCC, comprehensive treatment based on radical surgery should be considered as the major treatment modalities.

Objective To investigate the expressions of interleukin (IL)-21 and phosphorylated extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (pERK1/2) in Kimura disease (KD) and to correlate the findings with clinical and prognostic variables. Methods Immunohistochemical analysis of IL-21 and pERK1/2 was performed in 18 cases of KD and five gender- and age-matched control samples. Clinical data were extracted and patients followed up for a mean period of 32.1 months. Results After a mean follow-up period of 32.1 months (range 1–102 months), recurrence was diagnosed as the end point for seven patients—that is, a 44% (7/16) cumulative recurrence rate. Background Aerobic glycolysis is a unique tumor cell phenotype considered as one of the hallmarks of cancer. Aerobic glycolysis can accelerate tumor development by increasing glucose uptake and lactate production. In the present study, lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) is significantly increased within glioma tissue samples and cells, further confirming the oncogenic role of LDHA within glioma. Methods Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining were applied for histopathological examination. The protein levels of LDHA, transporter isoform 1 (GLUT1), hexokinase 2 (HK2), phosphofructokinase (PFK) in target cells were detected by Immunoblotting. The predicted miR-9 binding to lncRNA Annexin A2 Pseudogene 2 (ANXA2P2) or the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of LDHA was verified using Luciferase reporter assay. Cell viability or apoptosis were examined by MTT assay or Flow cytometry. Intracellular glucose and Lactate levels were measured using glucose assay kit and lactate colorimetric assay kit. Results The expression of ANXA2P2 showed to be dramatically upregulated within glioma tissue samples and cells. Knocking down ANXA2P2 within glioma cells significantly inhibited cell proliferation and aerobic glycolysis, as manifested as decreased lactate and increased glucose in culture medium, and downregulated protein levels of glycolysis markers, GLUT1, HK2, PFK, as well as LDHA. miR-9 was predicted to target both lncRNA ANXA2P2 and LDHA. The overexpression of miR-9 suppressed the cell proliferation and aerobic glycolysis of glioma cells. Notably, miR-9 could directly bind to LDHA 3′UTR to inhibit LDHA expression and decrease the protein levels of LDHA. ANXA2P2 competitively targeted miR-9, therefore counteracting miR-9-mediated repression on LDHA. Within tissues, miR-9 exhibited a negative correlation with ANXA2P2 and LDHA, respectively, whereas ANXA2P2 and LDHA exhibited a positive correlation with each other. Conclusions In conclusion, ANXA2P2/miR-9/LDHA axis modulates the aerobic glycolysis progression in glioma cells, therefore affecting glioma cell proliferation.

Macrodactyly of the foot is an extremely rare congenital malformation characterized by an increase in the size of all the elements or structures of a digit or digits. Most sources indicate that macrodactyly affects the hand more often than the foot. This rare medical condition usually requires surgical intervention with a precise preoperative plan and postoperative rehabilitation. We present a case of macrodactyly of the right foot in which surgical reduction of the foot under assistance of 3-dimensional image technology was performed with satisfying cosmetic and functional outcomes.

This study aimed to establish and explore the biological basis of abnormal phlegmatic syndrome with premature ovarian failure (POF) model in rats based on the Uighur medicine (UM) in the first place and investigate the effects of unique herbal medicine, Balgham Munziq (BMq). Mature female Wistar rats were fed with spinach and coriander in cold and humid condition for approximately 20 weeks until abnormal phlegmatic syndrome (APS) model was established. When APS model was confirmed by Uighur medical experts, APS with POF disease rats were subdivided into APS with POF disease model group and APS with POF disease treated with BMq group; the rest of them were subdivided into APS model group and APS treated with BMq group. The results show that biological characteristics of animals in the course of modeling period were in accordance with clinical features of abnormal phlegmatic syndrome (APS) in Uighur medicine. Herbal medicine BMq not only reverted reproductive hormone levels disorders but also improved the function of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and regulated secretion of monoamine neurotransmitters. APS is most likely to cause pathological changes of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and lead to the occurrence of POF and BMq is effective in the treatment of APS with POF disease.

Objectives The aim of this study was to present the use of inferiorly pedicled nasolabial flap (IPNF) in the reconstruction of anterior maxilla defects class I and II. Methods Seven patients, 4 females and 3 males, aging from 38 to 75 (mean = 55.9) years old, from 2014 to 2017 reconstructed anterior part of maxilla with or without oronasal communication were included in this study. Five patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, 1 patient presented with epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, and 1 patient had ameloblastoma. The IPNFs were harvested in 7 patients. Follow-up data were collected for a period ranging from 9 to 26 months. Speech, mastication, and aesthetic outcomes were evaluated with a questionnaire in interview. Results All patients healed without infection, flap loss, and flap failure. Five patients without prothetic treatment had little pronunciation problem (score: 1 to 3 points), while 2 patients with removable partial denture had excellent speech clarity (score: 1 to 2 points). All patients had no problem with mastication (score: 1 to 2 points). Aesthetic outcomes were acceptable in all patients (score: 1 to 3 points). Conclusion The IPNF is a good option for reconstruction of anterior maxilla defects class I and II.

Objective To analyze variations in urinary stone composition between Uyghur and Han patients with urolithiasis in Xinjiang, China, and to explore the possible factors associated with urinary stone composition in Uyghur and Han patients. Materials and Methods We analyzed the components of urinary stones in 317 adults (152 Uyghur and 165 Han) with urolithiasis admitted to our hospital from March 2009 to June 2011. Urinary stones were collected by endoscopic or open surgical procedures and analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Also analyzed were clinical data, including patient's age, sex, geographic distribution, blood tests, and urine tests. Logistic regression was performed to analyze the association between stone components and the clinical characteristics of the patients. Results There were significant differences between Uyghur and Han patients in age, geographic distribution, serum concentrations of uric acid, potassium, and phosphorus, urine magnesium concentrations, 24-hour volumes of urine, and in stone components of calcium oxalate monohydrate, calcium oxalate dihydrate plus carbapatite, and uric acid. Differences in sex, family history, complications, sites of calculi, or other blood and urine test results were not significant. Logistic regression analysis revealed that geographic location, ethnicity, blood potassium concentration, and urine volume were significantly correlated with the calcium oxalate dihydrate plus carbapatite component of urinary stones. Conclusion Urinary stone composition differs between Uyghur and Han patients with urolithiasis, possibly as a result of geographic distribution.

A ganglion cyst is a very rare lesion associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This lesion filled with viscoid fluid or gelatinous material arises from myxoid degeneration of the connective tissue of the joint capsule. A 40-year-old Chinese woman with ganglion cyst of the left TMJ is presented, and the differential diagnosis, histological characteristics and management of the ganglion cyst are discussed. A review of the literature is also presented.

This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of clinically applying facial submental island flap in reconstruction of oral cancer ablation in residents of Xinjiang, China. A total of 21 patients with oral cavity cancer underwent surgical resection during 4.4 years. Immediate reconstruction with submental island flap was performed and reviewed. The site, stage, pattern of neck dissection, postoperative complication, and the technique of flap transfer were recorded. The patients were followed up to assess the status of the flap, its function, and the oncologic outcomes. Eventually in this study, all patients had undergone neck dissection and wide excision of the primary lesion. The follow-up period ranged from 3 to 52 months. Of 21 patients, 2 patients had complete flap loss. The overall survival rate in our study is found to be 90.4%. The submental island flap is an excellent alternative for reconstruction of intraoral cancer defect because of its function, reliability, versatility, and relative ease of application. However, further study depends upon the long-term follow-up of the patients and oncologically sound neck dissection.

To analyze the causes of urolithiasis in Uyghur children from Xinjiang.We retrospectively evaluated the clinical features and characteristics of urinary stone composition of 220 Uyghur pediatric patients with urolithiasis between March 2009 and June 2011. The data were compared with that of 100 Uyghur children without urolithiasis who visited the Child Care Clinic for regular health check-ups. The stones were collected by endoscopy or open surgery, and analyzed using infrared spectroscopy.The mean age of the 220 Uyghur children was 7.48 ± 4.73 years (range, 0.8-17.0 years). The overall sex ratio (male:female) was 2.23:1. The predominant pure stone was ammonium urate (58.9%), whereas the predominant mixed stone was calcium oxalate mixture (91.1%). Uric acid stones comprised 54% of all stones. Urinary tract infections were observed in 42.3% and 4.0% of the patient and control groups, respectively. The mean urinary pH values were 5.77 ± 0.67 and 6.42 ± 0.67, respectively (p0.001). pH values were5.5 in 52.7% and 6% of the patient and control groups, respectively. On 24-h urine analysis, we found metabolic disturbances in these patients: hypercalciuria in 6.8% cases, hyperphosphaturia in 16.8% cases, hyperuricosuria in 21.4% cases, and hypomagnesiuria in 34.1% cases.Urolithiasis in Uyghur children may be primarily related to local environmental factors.

The management of mandibular angle fractures is controversial. The present study proposed to determine the superiority between the 1 miniplate and 2 miniplate fixation system and evaluated the best option for patients.A systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, examining Medline-Ovid, Embase, and PubMed databases for relevant reports in English without date restrictions in October 2018. The inclusion criteria were studies of humans, including randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, and retrospective studies, with the aim of comparing the 2 techniques. The incidence of postoperative complications and operative times were evaluated, and the relative risk and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were assessed to measure the effect size. Subgroup analyses of the different fracture regions and different miniplate sizes were performed. Publication bias was measured using a funnel plot.Thirteen reports were enrolled for analysis. The results showed that the 1 miniplate fixation system reduced the overall complication rate compared with the 2 miniplate fixation system (P = .02). The incidence of wound dehiscence, hardware failure, scarring, and paresthesia showed statistically significant differences in favor of the 1 miniplate system (P .05). The subgroup analyses indicated that 1 miniplate with isolated fractures caused a lower incidence rate of wound dehiscence, scarring, and hardware failure compared with the 2 miniplate fixation technique (P .05).The results of the present study suggest that the 1 miniplate system is superior to 2 miniplates with a reduction in postoperative complication rates for the management of mandibular angle fractures.

Dysregulation of miRNAs has been shown to contribute to multiple tumorigenic processes, as well as to correlate with tumour progression and prognosis. miR-199a has been shown to be dysregulated in multiple tumour types. However, the association between miR-199a and the chemoresistance features of osteosarcoma are not well understood, the target genes for miR-199a and the regulatory mechanisms are also unknown. In the present study, we demonstrated that miR-199a is expressed at low levels in osteosarcoma cells and patient samples. By the selection and establishment of cisplatin resistant osteosarcoma cell line, we observed a correlation between miR-199a and cisplatin resistance in osteosarcoma cells: resistant cells exhibit attenuated miR-199a expressions and exogenous overexpression of miR-199a sensitizes osteosarcoma cells to cisplatin. Moreover, we identified HIF-1α as a direct target for miR-199a. Intriguingly, cisplatin resistant osteosarcoma cells display significantly elevated HIF-1α expression under hypoxia. We report here overexpression of miR-199a resensitizes cisplatin resistant cells to cisplatin through inhibition of HIF-1α in vitro and in vivo. Finally, by analysing the clinical osteosarcoma patient samples, we demonstrate a reverse correlation between miR-199a and HIF-1α mRNAs. Our study will provide mechanisms for the miRNA-mediated anticancer therapy and miR-199a may be considered a promising therapeutic agent for osteosarcoma patients who fail to respond to conventional chemotherapy.
