Objective: We aimed to investigate the content of Covid-19 news in the media before and after the declaration of the first Covid-19 case in Turkey, as well as the compatibility of their medical massages with World Health Organisation (WHO) data. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, Covid-19 news in Turkey’s most visited webpages of five newspapers and five internet news sites was examined retrospectively for two months categorized as the periods of one month before and one month after the first Covid-19 case declaration in Turkey. The news was evaluated according to their content, sources, content and headline compatibility, evidence and accuracy levels in terms of WHO reports, its potential to evoke social negative emotions such as anxiety, fear, panic, and to produce negative bias against China. Statistical analysis was performed by using the SPSS 21 program and the results were expressed as numbers and percentages. Results: It was determined that in total of 7915 news, the most content was about the protection and prevention methods. In the news before and after the first case declaration in Turkey, the content-headline incompatibility rates were 50,8% and 1,1%; incompatibility rates of the medical information in the news with WHO reports were 7,1% and 2,9%; the rates of referencing were 74,3% and 66,9%, the rates of the news having the potential to produce anxiety and fear in the reader were 56,9% and 19,6% and to produce prejudice and negative attitudes towards China were 19,7% and 4,6%, respectively. Conclusions: It seems that the declaration of the first Covid-19 case changed the news making pattern of the media to a more responsible behaviour for the public. We suggest that it is a rational approach to use the power of the media correctly in enhancing public awareness towards Covid-19 pandemic.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) are important gaseous signalling molecules that regulate key physiochemical mechanisms of plants under environmental stresses. A number of attempts have been made to improve waterlogging tolerance in plants, but with limited success. Having said that, NO and H2 S are vital signalling molecules, but their role in mitigating waterlogging effects on crop plants is not well established. We investigated the efficacy of exogenous NO and H2 S to alleviate waterlogging effects in two wheat cultivars (Galaxy-2013 and FSD-2008). Waterlogging produced a noticeable reduction in plant growth, yield, chlorophyll, soluble sugars and free amino acids. Besides, waterlogging induced severe oxidative damage seen as higher cellular TBARS and H2 O2 content. Antioxidant enzyme activity increased together with a notable rise in Fe2+ and Mn2+ content. Proline content was higher in waterlogged plants compared with non-waterlogged plants. In contrast, waterlogging caused a substantial decline in endogenous levels of essential nutrients (K+ , Ca2+ and Mg2+ ). Waterlogged conditions led to Fe2+ and Mn2+ toxicity due to rapid reduction of Fe3+ and Mn3+ in the soil. Exogenous NO and H2 S significantly protected plants from waterlogging effects by enhancing the oxidative defence and regulating nutritional status. Besides, the protective effects of exogenous NO were more prominent as compared with effects of H2 S. Further, we did not study the effect of H2 S and NO on photosynthetic attributes and expression of stress-related genes. Therefore, future studies should examine the effects of H2 S and NO on wheat physiology and gene expression under waterlogging.

In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently been proposed for hybrid-access small-cells, promising a manifold network capacity compared to OMA. One of the major issues with the installation of a hybrid-access mechanism in small-cells is the cross-tier interference (intercell interference (ICI)) caused by the macrocell users (MUs) that are unable to establish a connection to the small-cell base station (SBS). In this paper, a joint strategy is proposed for hybrid-access small-cells using the Walsh–Hadamard transform (WHT) with NOMA and interference rejection combining (IRC) to achieve high performance gains and mitigate intercell interference (ICI), respectively. WHT is applied mathematically as an orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) to achieve diversity in communication systems. When applied jointly with NOMA, it ensures better performance gains than the conventional NOMA. It reduces the bit error rate (BER) and enhances subsequent throughput performance of the system. IRC is used at the receiver side for managing the cross-tier interference caused by MUs that are unable to connect to the small-cell base station (SBS) for hybrid-access. The work considers both ideal and nonideal successive interference cancellation (SIC) conditions for NOMA. Mathematical modeling is provided for the proposed joint strategy for HetNets and the results validate it in terms of BER and subsequent user throughput performance, compared to the conventional NOMA approach.

Steroid estrogens are emerging contaminants of concern due to their devastating effects on reproduction and development in animals and humans at very low concentrations. The increasing steroid estrogen in the environment all over the world contrasts very few studies for potential impacts on plant development as a result of estrogen uptake. This study evaluated the uptake, transformation and effects of estradiol (17β-E2) and ethinyl estradiol (EE2) (0.1–1000 μg L−1) on lettuce. Uptake increased in leaves and roots in a dose-dependent manner, and roots were the major organ in which most of the estrogen was deposited. The transformation of estrogens to major metabolite and their further reverse biotransformation in lettuce tissue was identified. At low concentrations (0.1 and 50 μg L−1) estrogens resulted in enhanced photosynthetic pigments, root growth and shoot biomass. Application of higher concentrations of estrogens (10 mg L−1) significantly reduced total root growth and development. This was accompanied by increased levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA), and activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Taken together, these findings suggest that at low concentrations estrogens may biostimulate growth and primary metabolism of lettuce, while at elevated levels they have adverse effects.

The effects of selenium (Se) cadmium (Cd) interactions on plant growth and metabolism are not fully clear. In the present study, we assessed whether Se could alleviate the toxic effects of Cd on growth and metabolism of maize. Seeds of maize variety FH-985 were sown in pots filled with sand treated with CdCl2 (0, 50 and 100 µM) and Se (0, 2 and 4 mg L−1) through Hoagland’s nutrient solution. Low Se (2 mg L−1) increased germination percentage and rate, while high Se (4 mg L−1) increased fresh and dry biomass under Cd stress. Interestingly, all Se concentrations were effective in alleviating the toxic effects of Cd on photosynthetic pigments, whereas higher Se mitigated the Cd-induced oxidative stress and increased flavonoids both in the shoots and roots while phenolics in the roots. Botulism is a neurological disease caused by the heat-labile toxin of Clostridium botulinum. Botulism should be kept in mind in the presence of neurological findings and suspicious food intake in patients without fever and altered mental status. Thin films of Zn1−xCuxSe (0.00≤x≤0.20) have been prepared by the closed space sublimation technique. Various structural and optical properties have been investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), spectrophotometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effect of Cu concentration has been observed on the physical properties of Zn1−xCuxSe films for varying concentrations of copper. X-ray diffraction patterns show that the films are polycrystalline having preferential orientation along the (111) plane. Full width at half maximum (FWHM) values obtained by XRD show that FWHM decreases up to 10% copper concentration while an opposite trend has been observed beyond this concentration. RMS values calculated by AFM shows that the deposited films have smooth morphology; crystallinity improves with increasing Cu concentration and optimum results are shown with 10% Cu concentration. Various optical parameters i.e. absorption coefficient (α), extinction coefficient (k), reflectance (R), refractive index (n), optical conductivity (σop) and electrical conductivity (σel) have been determined using transmission spectra at different copper concentrations. From the reflection spectra it is observed that reflectance increases with the increase of copper concentration. The band gap energy has been determined using k spectra at various copper concentrations through spectroscopic ellipsometry. It is found that the band gap energy of the films decreases with the increase of copper concentration while dielectric constant increases. FTIR analysis revealed that the characteristic ZnSe bond stretching–vibrating mode occurs at 670.8 cm−1.

The inherent differences for salt tolerance in two maize cultivars (Agatti-2002 and Sahiwal-2002) were evaluated in pot experiments. Plants were grown in half-strength of Hoagland nutrient solution added with 0, 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 mM of NaCl. Salt stress markedly reduced the shoot and root lengths and fresh and dry masses. Reduction in growth attributes was more pronounced in cv. Agatti-2002 than cv. Sahiwal-2002. Both maize cultivars exhibited significant perturbations in important biochemical attributes being employed for screening the crops for salt tolerance. Cultivar Sahiwal-2002 was found salt tolerant as compared to cv. Agatti-2002 because it exhibited lower levels of H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA) and higher activities of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, cultivar Sahiwal-2002 exhibited less salt-induced degradation of photosynthetic pigments, lower levels of toxic Na+ and Cl− and higher endogenous levels of K+ and K+/Na+ ratio. Die phanotypischen Merkmale entstehen durch ein kleines metazentrisches Markerchromosom, ein Isochromosom 18p. Zu den in ihrem Ausmas variablen klinischen Manifestationen konnen u. a. Spracherwerbsbehinderungen, Epilepsie, vermindertes Langenwachstum, anfanglich generalisierte Muskelhypotonie mit nachfolgenden Spastiken der unteren Extremitaten, die das Stehen und Gehen erschweren, Fehlanlagen des urogenitalen Systems und kongenitale Herzfehler gehoren. Auch wenn Horstorungen in einigen Fallen beobachtet wurden, ist eine sensorineurale Storung bei der Tetrasomie 18p bisher nicht als ein syndromtypisches Symptom beschrieben worden.

Background Use of cell phones has increased dramatically since 1992 when they were first introduced in France. Certain electromagnetic fields (at extremely low frequency) have been recognized as possibly carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Given the use of radiofrequency technology in cell phones, the rapid increase in the number of cell phones has generated concerns about the existence of a potential health hazard. To evaluate the relationship between the use of cell phones and the development of tumors of the head, a multicentric international study (INTERPHONE), coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, was carried out in 13 countries. This publication reports the results of the French part of the INTERPHONE study. Methods INTERPHONE is a case-control study focused on tumors of the brain and central nervous system: gliomas, meningiomas and neuromas of cranial nerves. Eligible cases were men and women, residents of Paris or Lyon, aged 30–59, newly diagnosed with a first primary tumor between February 2001 and August 2003. The diagnoses were all either histologically confirmed or based upon unequivocal radiological images. Controls were matched for gender, age (± 5 years) and place of residence. They were randomly drawn from electoral rolls. Detailed information was collected for all subjects during a computer-assisted face-to-face interview. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for an association between the use of cell phones and risk of each type of cancer. Results Regular cell phone use was not associated with an increased risk of neuroma (OR = 0,92; 95% confidence interval = [0.53–1.59]), meningioma (OR = 0,74; 95% confidence interval = [0.43–1.28]) or glioma (OR = 1.15; 95% confidence interval = [0.65–2.05]). Although these results are not statistically significant, a general tendency was observed for an increased risk of glioma among the heaviest users: long-term users, heavy users, users with the largest numbers of telephones. Conclusion No significant increased risk for glioma, meningioma or neuroma was observed among cell phone users participating in Interphone. The statistical power of the study is limited, however. Our results, suggesting the possibility of an increased risk among the heaviest users, therefore need to be verified in the international INTERPHONE analyses.

The role of extensive resectional surgery, including total gastrectomy for the palliation of advanced gastric cancer is controversial. This study shows operative results with complications and mortality occurring after total gastrectomy in patients with advanced stage gastric carcinoma. The study included 83 (48 males and 35 females, median age was 54.6 +/- 11.4 years) patients who underwent palliative total gastrectomy or oesophagogastrectomy (distal oesophagectomy in continuity with total gastrectomy). The reason for nonradical treatment was a too locally advanced disease. There was no case of carcinoma without serosal extension. Only five patients were free of histological lymph node metastases. A total of 72 (86.7%) early postoperative complications, including 17 self-limited wound complications, and 21 pulmonary complications were noted. Dehiscence of the oesophagojejunal anastomosis was noted in 7 patients, 3 of whom subsequently died. A total of 8 (9.6%) patients died in the postoperative period. The mean survival period was 12.8 +/- 0.8 months for all patients. It was 18.16 +/- 2.04 months in stage IIIA patients, 13.37 +/- 0.79 months in stage IIIB, and 7.51 +/- 0.97 months in stage IV patients. Total gastrectomy is a relatively safe procedure even when performing as a palliative procedure, with acceptable mortality and low lethal complication rate, and should be considered an alternative option in palliative treatment of advanced gastric cancer.

Leptin and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors are two important adipose tissue factors involved in energy metabolism regulation. It has been shown that PPARgamma agonists decrease leptin levels. However, the effects of PPARalpha agonists on leptin have not been investigated much. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a PPARgamma agonist rosiglitazone (RSG) and PPARalpha agonist gemfibrozil (G) on body weight and serum insulin and leptin levels in diet-induced obese rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups according to diet and drug therapy. After four weeks, serum glucose, triglyceride, insulin and leptin levels were significantly decreased in the high-fat-fed and RSG-treated groups compared to the group fed a high-fat diet only (162 +/- 19 vs. 207 +/- 34 mg/dl, 58 +/- 20 vs. 112 +/- 23 mg/dl, 3.1 +/- 1.0 vs. 15.2 +/- 4.0 ng/ml, 1.6 +/- 0.5 vs. 3.6 +/- 1.6 ng/ml, respectively). However, these parameters were not statistically different in RSG animals treated with a standard diet compared to the standard diet group. The high fat+RSG group gained much more weight compared to high-fat and high-fat+G groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, serum glucose, insulin and leptin levels were significantly decreased in the high-fat-fed and G-treated group compared to high-fat group (149 +/- 19 vs. 207 +/- 34 mg/dl, 57 +/- 16 vs. 112 +/- 23 mg/dl, 4.3 +/- 2.1 vs. 15.2 +/- 4.0 ng/ml, 1.6 +/- 0.4 vs. 3.6 +/- 1.6 ng/ml, respectively). These results suggest that PPARalpha agonists may decrease serum glucose, insulin and leptin levels as PPARgamma agonists do in diet-induced obese rats.

The structural rearrangement in the short arm of a chromosome 8 in a clinically affected patient has been reinvestigated by FISH using whole chromosome painting and region specific YAC probes. An inverted duplication of the segment p22→p11.2 and a deletion of the subtelomeric region were demonstrated. By this approach, a more detailed resolution of the duplication/deletion 8p was possible. With the application of molecular cytogenetic methods the existence of different duplication segments within the clinical entity of duplication/deficiency 8p can be shown.

The study was undertaken to examine the clinical and endocrine parameters of thyroid in a total of 460 pregnant women belonging to non-goiter areas (group 1; n = 156) and endemic areas without (group 2; n = 154) and with iodine supplementation (group 3; n = 150), and their respective newborns.Women of group 3 with visible goiter were administered two capsules of iodized oil orally each containing 200 mg of iodine, from weeks 6--8 of pregnancy. Blood samples were obtained from all groups during each trimester, at parturition (umbilical cord blood) and after delivery. Serum triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured by specific enzyme immunoassays.In group 2, serum T4 concentrations were low while T3 and TSH levels were high which showed hypothyroidism in the women of endemic areas. Goiter size decreased in most of the subjects who received a single dose of iodized oil and resulted in increase in serum concentrations of thyroid hormones; whereas, TSH levels decreased. Iodine supplementation also resulted in raised T4 and low TSH levels in the cord blood of neonates. During the course of study, two abortions, three still births and one cretin were reported in group 2; none was reported in group 3; and one still birth was reported in group 1.The oral administration of a single dose of iodized oil is capable of correcting iodine deficiency both clinically and endocrinologically in mothers and neonates. Iodine supplementation has the potential to positively impact the birth weight of newborns.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strengths of ceramic laminate veneers bonded to bleached and non‐bleached enamel. Ninety‐six extracted maxillary central incisors were divided into two groups of 48 specimens each, bleached group and non‐bleached group. After bleaching, teeth were prepared to accommodate veneers of equal thickness. Two ceramic systems, Cerec 3 and IPS Empress 2, were used for restoration. Each of the two ceramic groups was luted with Variolink 2 and RelyX veneer cement. Specimens were then subjected to tensile forces. We report that LRP5, encoding the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5, affects bone mass accrual during growth. Mutations in LRP5 cause the autosomal recessive disorder osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome (OPPG). We find that OPPG carriers have reduced bone mass when compared to age- and gender-matched controls. We demonstrate LRP5 expression by osteoblasts in situ and show that LRP5 can transduce Wnt signaling in vitro via the canonical pathway. We further show that a mutant-secreted form of LRP5 can reduce bone thickness in mouse calvarial explant cultures. These data indicate that Wnt-mediated signaling via LRP5 affects bone accrual during growth and is important for the establishment of peak bone mass. Gong, Y

We report a 37-year-old woman admitted to the emergency service with macroscopic haematuria and flank pain due to renal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Ultrasonography showed apparent dilatation of the left renal caliceal system, whereas intravenous pyelography (IVP) demonstrated multinodular pelvicaliceal impressions with no caliceal dilatation. The final diagnosis was established with conventional angiography. Renal AVM may mimic caliceal dilatation on ultrasonography. Demonstration of multinodular pelvicaliceal impressions at IVP and lack of caliceal dilatation are clues for the correct diagnosis in this particular situation.

We investigated a possible modulation of growth hormone (GH) secretion by testosterone by measuring the growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH)-stimulated and N-methyl-d,l-aspartic acid (NMA)-induced GH secretion in adult rhesus monkeys. Intact, orchidectomized and testosterone-substituted (testosterone enanthate 125 mg/week, i.m. for 5 weeks) orchidectomized monkeys (n=5) were used in the study. GHRH (25 microg/kg body weight) or NMA (15 mg/kg body weight) was infused through a Teflon cannula implanted in the saphenous vein. Sequential blood samples were collected 30-60 min before and 60 min after the injection of the neurohormone or the drug at 10-20-min intervals. All bleedings were carried out under ketamine hydrochloride anaesthesia (initial dose 5 mg/kg body weight i.m., followed by 2.5 mg/kg at 30-min intervals). The plasma concentrations of GH, testosterone and oestradiol (E(2)) were determined by using specific assay systems. Administration of GHRH elicited a significant increase in GH secretion in all three groups of animals. There was no significant difference in the responsiveness of pituitary somatotrophs to exogenous GHRH challenges between intact and orchidectomized monkeys and testosterone replacement in orchidectomized animals did not significantly alter the GHRH-induced GH response. The responsiveness of hypothalamic GHRH neurones apparently did undergo a qualitative change after orchidectomy, as GH response to NMA was less in orchidectomized animals than in intact monkeys. The responsiveness of GHRH neurones to exogenous NMA was restored and even potentiated when orchidectomized monkeys were treated with testosterone. Taken together, these findings suggest that testosterone does not affect the sensitivity of the pituitary somatotrophs to GHRH but stimulates the secretion of GH by modulation of the NMDA drive to GHRH neurones.

Although the gonadotropic control of the spermatogenic process is well established, the endocrine regulation of the timing and kinetics of germ cell development has received little attention. We found previously that the administration of a GnRH antagonist (ANT) over a period of 25 days could retard spermatid development and slightly prolong cycle length in intact adult cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of extended exposure to ANT on the duration of the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium in the monkey. Additionally, the duration of spermatogenesis was studied in the ANT-exposed rat model. In experiment 1, monkeys were given either saline or ANT (n=6/group) and on day 30 all animals received a single injection of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to label S-phase germ cells. Testicular biopsies were taken on days 39, 43, 47 and 51 (end of treatment) for BrdU localization and flow cytometric analysis. ANT treatment suppressed hormone levels, reduced testis size by >70% and severely impaired germ cell production. Despite these alterations, cycle duration remained unchanged at all time-points compared with controls (10.12+/-0.15 days vs 10.16+/- 0.44 days). In experiment 2, adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=15/group) received either vehicle (VEH) or ANT for 14 days and received BrdU injection on day 2. Cycle duration was found to be shorter in the ANT-treated group (12.45+/-0.09 days) than in the control group (12.75+/-0.08, P0.05) in both species. We concluded that the duration of the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium in monkeys and rats is independent of gonadotropins but is rather regulated by the spermatogenic tissue itself.

The present study was designed to examine whether acute food-restriction in non-human primates, suppresses hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis via alterations in the excitatory amino acid (EAA) neurotransmitter-utilizing drive to the GnRH neuron. This was achieved indirectly by comparing the plasma testosterone (T) responses to administration of an excitatory amino acid analogue, N-methyl-D,L-aspartic acid (NMA), in acutely fasted and normal fed monkeys. A set of 4 chair-restrained adult male rhesus monkeys, was assigned to the following treatments: a) normal feeding, b) one-day fasting (omission of morning and afternoon meals), c) normal feeding+NMA (15 mg/kg BW) and d) one-day fasting+NMA (15 mg/kg BW). Aim of study To evaluate the necessity and efficacy of quinidine fumarate, verapimil, or amiodarone prophylaxis for sinus rhythm maintenance in patients who experienced atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery. Methods Between 1992 and 1995, this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study examined 120 patients in whom atrial fibrillation occurred and was restored to sinus rhythm by pharmacological therapy or direct current cardioversion in the immediately postoperative period after coronary artery by-pass surgery. There were no significant differences in perioperative characteristics among the patients, who were randomly separated into four groups in the course of discharge. In group 1 (n = 30), patients did not receive antiarrhythmic drugs. Quinidine fumarate was given in group 2 (n = 30), verapimil in group 3 (n = 30), and amiodarone in group 4 (n = 30). Patients were monitored six times over a 90-day postoperative period by 24-hour Holter monitoring and routine examination. Results The recurrent atrial fibrillation usually developed within 15 days of discharge. Atrial fibrillation occurred in one patient (3.33%) in group 1, and two each (6.66%) in groups 2, 3, and 4. Atrial fibrillation was asymptomatic and occurred with slow ventricular response in groups 3 and 4. Side effects occurred in 5 patients (16.6%) given quinidine, 1 patient given amiodarone, but in no patient given verapimil. Conclusions There were no significant differences in the maintenance of sinus rhythm among the four groups, so we suggest that long-term prevention of atrial fibrillation in patients with coronary artery bypass grafting was not necessary at the postdischarge period.

Background Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a multifactorial, systemic, progressive, inflammatory disease which is characterized with bone and cartilage destruction. Synovial angiogenesis is important at the etiopathology. Recently with the better understanding of RA pathogenesis, the target specific treatment approaches come up with better results. Objectives The purpose is to study levels of newly identified plasma signal peptide-CUP-EGF domain containing protein (SCUBE) 1and 3 in RA patients. Moreover, to determine whether there exists any correlation between these proteins, other angiogenesis parameters and disease activities Methods This study covers 106 patients diagnosed with RA associated with 2010 American Collage of Rheumatology (ACR) diagnosis criteria matched with healthy controllers who are equivalent of RA patients in terms of age and gender. All necessary data such as age, gender and body mass index of all participants were recorded. Detailed background information and examination of the patients are recorded and disease activity scores (DAS28) were figured out. A new approach for the detection of chromosome deletion 22q11.2 in interphase nuclei from buccal mucosa cells obtained by a non-invasive procedure is decribed. FISH analysis has been performed on samples from a group of 101 patients that presented consecutively for speech therapy and/or surgical correction of cleft palate. A normal result has been obtained in 98 patients; a deletion 22q11.2 was present in three patients (2.8%) with cleft palate.

Background: Carotid body tumors are infrequent neoplasms in daily practice. Diagnostic difficulties exist because of their slow growth and asymptomatic progress. The surgical treatment is complicated and difficult due to their proximity to vascular and neural structures. In this study we present the results of 12 patients operated for carotid body tumor that underwent preoperative percutaneous direct embolization. Patients and methods: The data of 12 patients, diagnosed with carotid body tumor and surgically treated at our department between 2000 and 2010, was retrospectively analyzed. Duplex ultrasound, computerized tomography and selective carotid angiography were the applied diagnostic tools. Two days before the planned surgery all patients underwent percutaneous direct embolization to achieve devascularization of the tumor. Afterwards, surgical excision of the mass under general anesthesia was performed in all cases. Results: Five tumors were classified as Shamblin type I (41.7%), and the others were type II (58.3%). All masses were removed sub-adventitially and no vascular reconstruction was necessary. There was no mortality and no permanent neural damage. Malfunction of the tongue was observed in only one case, which recovered completely in one month. There was one recurrence detected by Duplex ultrasound and angiography during the follow up period. Conclusions: Surgical excision is mandatory to be performed as soon as diagnosed in carotid body tumors. Preoperative direct percutaneous embolization of the mass helps to devascurize the tumor, enabling an optimal surgical procedure. The outcomes of such a combined intervention are excellent and neurovascular structure preservation decreases complication and morbidity rates.

International audience; Biopolymer filaments form the molecular backbone of biological structures throughout the body. The biomechanical response of single filaments yields insight into their individual behavior at the molecular level as well as their concerted networked behavior at the cellular and tissue scales. This paper focuses on modeling approaches for axial force vs. extension behavior of single biopolymer filaments within three stiffness regimes: flexible, semiflexible, and stiff. The end-to-end force-extension behaviors of flexible and semiflexible filaments arise as a result of a reduction in configurational space as the filament is straightened and are captured with entropic models including the freely jointed chain model and the worm-like chain model. As the filament is straightened and the end-to-end distance approaches the filament contour length, the contour length is directly axially extended and an internal energy contribution governs the force-extension behavior in this limiting extension regime. On the other hand, for stiff filaments in originally crimped or kinked configurations, the end-to-end force vs. extension behavior results from the unbending (straightening) of the crimped configuration as governed by an internal energy based elastica approximation which is also complemented by an axial stretching contribution once the end-to-end distance approaches the contour length of the filament. Simplified, analytical force-extension relationships are developed for the worm-like chain model for semiflexible filaments, and for the Euler elastica model for stiffer, wavy fibers. For the case of flexible molecules containing modular folded domains, the influence of force-induced unfolding on the force-extension behavior of single molecules and assemblies of multiple molecules is also presented.

Fifteen longitudinally reared Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls (Bubalus bubalis) were slaughtered at 1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 mo of age (n = 3 per group) to observe testicular development and to examine qualitatively the establishment of spermatogenesis. With the age held constant, scrotal circumference and testes weight were correlated (0.95; P < 0.05). Testes weight increased from 3.5 ± 0.7 at 1 mo of age to 185 ± 30 g at 24 mo of age. Seminiferous tubules diameter developed in a linear fashion (57 μm at 1 mo and 178 μm at 24 mo), and the lumen formed at 12 mo of age. Differentiation of basal indifferent supporting cells to Sertoli cells started at 6 mo, and formation of Sertoli cells completed near 12 mo of age. Gonocytes predominated at 1 mo, but by 12 mo, most had been replaced by spermatogonia, thus rapid proliferation of tubular contents occurred at 12 mo (testes weight = 75 g). Spermatocytes were first observed at 12 mo, and their number increased through 18 and 24 mo. Establishment of spermatogenesis, as reflected by appearance of significant number of spermatids, occurred by 18 mo of age (testes weight 122 g). Thus, the establishment of spermatogenesis was progressive from birth, and marked changes were observed during the last 6 mo.

To investigate the sudden death of a 31-year-old man, a medicolegal autopsy was performed. Major findings were a dilated aortic root with a longitudinal rupture of the intima and dissection of aorta and right coronary artery and consequent tamponade of the pericardial sac. Moreover, arachnodactyly and other skeletal deformities in combination with the histological finding of a pseudocystic medionecrosis of the aortic wall were noted. By sequencing of the FBN1 gene, a mutation (1622G>A) leading to the diagnosis of Marfan syndrome was found. Genetic counseling was recommended to the relatives who reported that the father of the deceased had died at the same age from aortic rupture. While fortunately the child of the deceased lacked this mutation, it was found in his younger sister. The results of the autopsy thus enabled early diagnosis and beginning of treatment in the sister and thus a considerable statistical increase in lifespan. With this report, we want to show that medicolegal autopsies can also have medical consequences for relatives. We argue that in all sudden and unexpected deaths in young persons up to 35 years an autopsy should be performed, not only to detect unnatural causes of death but also to identify heritable diseases and thus aid the relatives. peerReviewed

Background: Bacterial translocation (BT) occurs after thermal injury and may result from an ischemic intestinal insult. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of ketamine and propofol as anesthetic agents on BT in an animal model of burn injury. Methods: Sixty male Wistar Albino rats were randomly assigned to six groups of 10 rats each. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with ketamine in groups 1, 2 and 3 and with propofol in groups 4, 5 and 6 during 6 h. Groups 2, 3, 5 and 6 received 30% total body surface area (TBSA) third-degree burns. Groups 1 and 4 had no burn injury. Then, they were allowed to recover from the anesthesia at the end of 6 h. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was monitored continuously and maintained within 10% of baseline (before burn injury) levels in all animals. Animals in groups 3 and 6 had a laparotomy to obtain a tissue sample from the terminal ileum for determination of intestinal lipid peroxidation by-product malondialdehyde (MDA) before (baseline) and 6 and 24 h after burn injury (ABI). So these animals were not included in the BT studies. At postburn 24 h, animals in groups 1, 2 and 4, 5 were sacrified and samples were taken from the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), liver and spleen for bacteriologic cultures. Results: The incidence of BT was found to be significantly higher in group 2 than in all the other groups. Bacterial translocation incidence of group 5 was not significantly different from that of groups 4 and 1. Group 5 was associated with a significantly reduced number of enteric organisms per gram of tissue compared to group 2. Baseline MDA contents of groups 3 and 6 were similar. Ileal MDA levels were increased in group 3, but there were no significant changes in group 6 at 6 and 24 h ABI compared to baseline. Conclusion: Our results suggest that propofol as an anesthetic agent may prevent BT by scavenging reactive oxygen species and inhibiting lipid peroxidation in an animal model of burn injury.

Mutations in the Aristaless-related homeobox (ARX) gene are associated with a broad spectrum of disorders including X-linked lissencephaly with abnormal genitalia (XLAG) and absent corpus callosum. Here, we describe a family with two male infants suffering from agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), intractable epilepsy, and abnormal genitalia. The phenotype of both affected patients differed in severity of the cerebral malformation with one showing no obvious evidence for lissencephaly. Both infants lacked any psychomotor development and died at the age of 17 weeks and 18 months, respectively. Genetic analysis of the ARX gene revealed a novel frameshift mutation in exon 4 (nt1419_1420insAC) leading to a shortened protein lacking the aristaless domain. In summary, analysis of the ARX gene should not only be considered in male patients with typical features of XLAG but also in those presenting with early onset epilepsy, ACC, and abnormal genitalia without obvious neuroradiological features of lissencephaly.

A biochemical variant of argininosuccinate lyase deficiency, found in five individuals, is introduced. In comparison to classical patients, the variant cases of argininosuccinate lyase deficiency were characterized by residual enzyme activity as measured by the incorporation of [14C]citrulline into proteins. The five patients of different ethnic backgrounds presented with relatively mild clinical symptoms, variable age of onset, marked argininosuccinic aciduria and severe, but not complete, deficiency of argininosuccinate lyase. [14C]Citrulline incorporation into proteins, which is completely blocked in classical argininosuccinic aciduria, was only partially reduced in fibroblasts of these patients. Further investigation showed that previous standard conditions of the assay were not optimal. Higher concentrations of citrulline in the incubation medium strongly stimulated 14C incorporation in normal cells, but not in the patients; as a result, the relative incorporation level in the patients dropped to 6-28% compared to 18-75% of normal in the original procedure. Prenatal diagnosis was successfully performed in three of the families. Affected pregnancies were indicated by (partial) deficiency of [14C]citrulline incorporation in chorionic villi and/or increased levels of argininosuccinate in amniotic fluid. Analysis of the ASL gene in the five patients revealed a considerable allelic heterogeneity. Three novel mutations--R385C (2 patients), V178M and R379C--were detected in homozygous states, whereas one patient was compound heterozygous for the known mutations R193Q and Q286R. In conclusion, there are patients of different ethnic backgrounds who are characterized by residual activity of argininosuccinate lyase and who present with less severe clinical courses. In addition, we present an improved biochemical assay for accurate prenatal and postnatal diagnosis.

Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the postabortion contraception choices of women and the subsequent reduction in pregnancy rate. The changes in method of contraception during the 1-year follow-up period were also assessed. Methods Ninety women decided to practice family planning methods following an abortion procedure. The family planning choices of the postabortion family planning group were determined by active immediate family planning counselling. The control group, which consisted of 23 women who had had an abortion and wanted to become pregnant again, were followed-up for 1 year to determine their pregnancy rate. The pregnancy rates and methods used were determined during a 12-month follow-up period. Results Following counselling, 79.64% of the patients signed for immediate family planning practice. Microdeletions in chromosome 22q11.2 are associated with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS), and several other syndromes, collectively referred to as DG/VCF. Non-dysmorphic patients with cardiac defects have also been attributed to deletions in this chromosomal region. In this study 157 consecutively catheterized patients with isolated, non-syndromic cardiac defects, and 25 patients with cardiac defects and additional stigmata (10 of whom were clinically diagnosed as DG/VCF cases prior to chromosome analysis) were analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridization with the DGS-specific probe D0832. Chromosome 22q11.2 deletions were observed only in the ten patients with the clinical diagnosis of DG/VCF. Conclusion In a large unselected cohort of patients with congenital heart disease no association between isolated or non-syndromic heart defects and the 22q11.2 microdeletion was observed. One can conclude that testing for the 22q11.2 microdeletion is clearly indicated in cases when even mild extracardiac abnormalities are present, particularly in very young infants.
